5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for Solaris
If you know already a system unix-like this book it is perfect in order to understand Solaris. Clearly, simple and precise in the examples. Don't choose this book if you are new to systems unix-like.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important book for who wants to use Solaris
Excuse me for my English, but I am Italian!
The book is truly useful in order to handle Solaris 9. I know linux, and I find that with this book the answers on solaris are indeed exhausting. The book is clear, simple, and useful also for me (I'm italian) and the my english is not perfect. This book is truly perfect if you already know an operating system unix-like; therefore if you want to become a good administrator of a true system unix this book is for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable guide for day-to-day task of Solaris SysAdmin
This book is carefully written by explaining and giving you examples on how to use the tools mostly used by Solaris System Administrators in their day-to-day administration of Solaris OE.

This book doesn't tackles installation but rather giving you the answer on how to successfully administer Solaris OE. This book address the chapters which is considered missing in most Solaris Administration book. What I like most in this book which is missing in the other books are Booting and Halting the system, Shells, Swap Space, Local Area Network and more.

With this book, who needs man pages? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars this is the MIPS Bible
Excellent book for MIPS. Read this first then
use the official documents from MIPS or your
MIPS cpu vendor. If you are an embedded programmer
learning MIPS or bringing up a MIPS system this
is your bible. The code snippets are extremely
useful also.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good steamcourse and reference
If you are looking for a book which gets you up and running with MIPS then look no further. This book explains its history and everything you need to know to start `messing around' with the MIPS RISC CPU.
The author also provides a lot of `gotchas', which he learned from prior experience from developing on/with the MIPS CPUs. Valuable insight in those little things which will ease your life as a developer.
Aside from the info provided by the author on the MIPS CPU itself, it also explains a great deal about basic processor technical knowledge, thus making the book a breeze to read for those of us with no extended experience in CPU internals.
Like one of the other reviewers said though, for a real reference with regard to the mnemonics and other instruction related things you might want to get the PDF files from the mips.com site and use those next to your See MIPS Run book.
They supplement each other well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book!
This is an outstanding book that is written by an author who knows his stuff. It covers a lot more material than just the MIPS architecture, although if that's what you're looking for, it's THE best MIPS book, and I have them all.

Sweetman THANKFULLY covers many topics that aren't unique to MIPS, such as pipelines, caches, memory management units, floating-point processing, etc... in addition to going into great detail specific to the MIPS variants.

The sign of a very good engineer/author/technical writer is someone who takes something that is complicated and involved, and makes it easy to understand. Sweetman is such an author.

On top of all that, the book makes for enjoyable reading and has a very conversational/friendly tone (but don't get me wrong, it is quite in-depth and technical.)

If you're working on any RISC architecture, including other variants such as PowerPC or ARM, this book is for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unger's Intricate Piece of Work
With an excellent array of notes explaining his decisions in translating the thirty-one chapters of Book One of Irenaes's Against the Heresies, Unger has produced an admirable and accessible scholarly edition. Any translation is simultaneously an interpretation, and Unger has elucidated his choices in a minute and clear manner. Moreover, his introduction is quite helpful in setting the scene regarding Irenaeus's audience, style, and purpose.

5-0 out of 5 stars One line made me buy!
To anyone interested in reading up on the earliest of heresies, this is the book for them! Heresy is when a post-baptized Catholic, in Christ, turns from the original teachings of the Catholic church of Christ, and decides to accept the man-made doctrines of other denominations by excluding the Sacred Traditions of our fathers (appointed by Christ). The bible warns of man-made doctrines! Protestantism and it's branch offs, accepts man made traditions (ie. scripture only). In turning to these new, truly man-made doctrines, they have chosen to divorce the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church that is Christ's. To be Catholic and then turn from it, is divorce. Protestants of course allow members to divorce and remarry. It's ironic that this is how their church was started. Rather than staying in the marriage and fixing it, divorce is chosen. However, Jesus promised HIS church to be one and united. For those in search of the real truth, the true Church of Christ, one needs only to search the history of the first actual, physical church of Christ to accept the Sacred value of the Catholic Church traditions. This book is just what the physician (Jesus) orders. Find out where the traditions came from and how Heresies began. In this book, Irenaeus proceeds to list the succession of the Bishops of Rome to his own day! He adds that "in this order, and by this succession, the ecclesiastical TRADITION from the apostles, and the preaching of truth have come down to us" I say, the study of Church history, is the end of Protestantism! Read! Your salvation depends on it!! The Catholic Church is the ONLY church NOT founded by a sinner! Do the research! Start here! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Dominic is a one-of-a-kind dog. One day this exuberant, restless, freedom-loving fellow decides there isn't enough going on in his neighborhood to satisfy his need for adventure. And off he goes, with an assortment of hats (rakish, dashing, solemn, and martial), his precious piccolo, and a few other things, leaving a note on his door:

Dear Friends, I am leaving rather in a hurry to see more of the world, so I have no time to say goodbye to you individually. I embrace you all and sniff you with love. I don't know when I'll be back. But back I will be. Dominic.
On the road, this curious canine is lighthearted, open to every option, all senses aquiver. It's not long before he encounters a prophetic witch-alligator, (who had "many more teeth than necessary for any ordinary dental purpose"); a catfish who gives him a long, sharp spear that will make him invincible in serious combat; and even the infamous Doomsday Gang, "who robbed, ravaged, cheated, attacked innocent creatures at large and travelers especially, and did all sorts of damaging mischief." Dominic remains undaunted throughout, for "challenges were his delight. Whatever life offered was, this way or that, a test of one's skills, one's faculties; and he enjoyed proving equal to these tests."

As he continues his journey, we find Dominic to be considerate, compassionate, generous, and philosophical. As he ponders the nature of death, the nature of wealth, the role of art in our lives, the nature of good and evil, and the yearning for true love, readers are left with a feeling that life is basically good, and even splendid:

"What a wonderful world!" thought Dominic. "How perfect!" Had it been up to him when things were first made, he wouldn't have made them a whit different. Every leaf was in its proper place. Pebbles, stones, flowers, all were just as they ought to be.Water ran where it should run. They sky was properly blue. All sounds were in tune. Everything had its appropriate smell.
Kids will adore the magical, comical, action-packed adventures of this remarkable dog, and readers of any age will come away from William Steig's Dominic somehow changed. An ALA Notable Book. (Ages 8 and older, anda wonderful read-aloud for younger children) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dominic
Dominic ,is a fast paced ,fun to read book. the story is filled with heartwarming and adventerous moments. The book is about a dog that goes on a journey and finds a series of adventures. Dominic meets a wild bunch of animal characters on the way. Most of the character's names didn't fit with their appearance ,for example Matilda Fox is a goose.
Matilda Fox is my favorite character because she tried new things such as flying , walking ,and swimming. The Doomsday gang didn't have names. The gang is an evil troop of animals that Dominic had to defeat over and over again. If you want to join Dominic on his fun filled adventures ,pick up Dominic and get pulled inside a journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars I worship this book!
This is one of the most amazing books I have ever encountered. William Steig creates a world to lose yourself in with evil foxes, charming geese, complex characters galore, and of course, our favorite dog of all time, Dominic himself. Perhaps the best part about Dominic is its sense of the mystery and wonder of life, of the importance of making good choices and the opportunities offered by taking the path less traveled. I absolutely fell in love with this book- it's a tale of wonder, excitement, chases, escapes, and doing the right thing. Dominic truly has a "heart of gold with nerves of steel," and he is so noble and young and brave and truthful that you wish you could leap right into the pages and help him out whenever the Doomsday Gang tries another attack. It's a truly amazing and touching read- I still get choked up when I read it sometimes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best children's book ever!
This was the first "real book" I remember reading as a little boy. I suppose I was about 6 or 7. I read and re-read Dominic many times and loved it more each time. I suppose it has be something like 35 years since I first read this book and I still remember it fondly. How many things can you say that about? ... Read more

Customer Reviews (13)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful, very enlightening, very controversial
Crossan has become controversial not because he says things hundreds of other biblical scholars and theologians haven't said before, but because he says them out in the open. Much of the search for the "historical Jesus" has been relegated to the pages of scholarly [or narrowly-read lay] journals.

"Who Is Jesus?" is a reader-friendly condensation of the subject matter of Crossan's major published work, "The Historical Jesus: The Life of a Mediterranean Jewish Peasant." The Q&A format, along with excerpts of letters written to Crossan, offers an easily-understood presentation of this sometimes-difficult material. The tough questions are asked and answered, although the answers aren't always as complete as in the prior [larger] work.

I am particularly pleased that Crossan is able to defend his views on faith statements concerning Jesus and his ministry vs. historical statements. Many detractors have bitterly remarked that "Crossan wants to take away Christmas and Easter," and other such complaints. Nothing of the kind; Crossan makes clear that the study of Jesus as a historical person is intended to make clearer and more real the message of the Jesus of faith. Many of his answers directly address the seeming incompatibilities of the two.

This is a good introduction for those new to the search for the "historical Jesus," and a useful addition to the libraries of those who have plowed through other [larger] works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Intro
So for those of you interested, this is a great crash course in Crossan's material. The information easy to read, and Crossan is, as always, engaging. I strongly encourage you to attend one of Dr. Crossan's lectures if you can. He has this great irish accent, and damn, the man knows what he's talking about. This book gives you a taste of the vast pools of insight Crossan has. Don't be surprised if you go along saying "I never thought of that."

To those who denigrate the Jesus Seminar, I would say its purpose is not to destroy christianity, but to voice a generally suppressed opinion. And if Christianity can be destroyed by a bunch of academics who thought it would be nice to find out what everyone agrees on, maybe Christianity isn't worthy of survival. For my part, although my faith was never in trouble, my ability to pursue it through the christian edifice was in doubt, and it was the Jesus Seminar that allowed me to do so. Thank you, Jesus Seminar.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Work
I enjoyed this book very much and will recommend it.

However, I am not giving a full 5-star recommendation because of Crossan's belief that the gospels were written with symbolism in the phrasing. I have heard this from different authors and historians before and I am still not convinced. The gospels were probably written for the literate, because the poor that Jesus was so fond of would never had been able to read them at all, much less understand any symbolism in the writing.

I submit the gospels were written to gather as many new converts as possible. It would not have been enough to show Jews and Gentiles the "Q" book, and try to win them over with teachings only. The story of Jesus needed more panache, with supernatural proof he was the Son of God.

I simply believe the gospels evolved out of campfire tall tales, taking what was known for sure, and stretching the myth. After all, that's how the Old Testament came about, as well as the mythologies from Babylon, Egypt, Greese and Rome (and even America)

I respect Mr. Crossan's works, and I will continue to read them as much as I can. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Chicago's early Italians
"ITALIANS IN CHICAGO" is part of the book series IMAGES OF AMERICA. The book is a compilation of old photographs that capture the Italian migration of the early 1900's and the life styles of the newly settled immigrants in Chicago. The importance of family, neighborhood and church in establishing a new found Italian-American community is captured pictorially throughout the book. Photographs from the various conclaves of Italians on the north, west and south sides are presented. Although the conclaves are dispersed throughout the city a common cultural uniformity can be seen to develop. The book is a valuable supplement to any serious research on the history of Chicago. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A telling look at a too-little known legend
There's not much that can be said about Wilfred Owen that shouldn't have already been said. Yet the life of this brilliant poet, which was cut short just before the armistice that ended World War I, remains unknown to far too many. Wilfred Owen is referred to as a "soldier-poet" of WWI, which includes him in the company of such literary standards as Rupert Brooke, Robert Graves and Siegfried Sassoon. But, as perhaps the greatest poet among the three, he is the least known. Dominic Hibberd's new biography will hopefully set that to rights.

I first fell in love with Wilfred Owen's poetry when I read "Dulce et Decorum est." I found his imagery real and terrifying as it spoke to the true brutality and horrors of "modern" warfare. (The poem is a description of a soldier dying in a gas attack.) Throughout the years I have read much on WWI and on the soldier-poets, but nothing has come as close to so vividly portraying the life of one of them as Hibberd's new biography.

Hibberd begins his very thorough telling of Owen's life, starting with his familial background and youth, and working his way through Owen's years as a parish assistant and his numerous attempts to gain a university education. It seems a long time before we are to encounter Wilfred as a soldier, but Hibberd builds a solid base that explains Wilfred's personality and his attitude towards poetry. Owen's devoutly Evangelical mother had wished her son to enter the service of the church, but after his time in Dunsden, Owen found it increasingly hard to reconcile his Christian faith with his love of literature, finding the two to oppose each other. His one desire in life was to be a poet, and upon entering the English army, he probably had no idea that his voice would come through war. Only a few of Owen's poems (five) were published in his lifetime and after his untimely death, his poetry was collected and published in the 20s and 30s. Afterwards, he seems to disappear entirely from the literary map until a renewed interest in his work arose in the 1960s; an appropriate time since another "war to end all wars" was being fought in Vietnam.

The one area of dicord I take with this biography concerns Owen's sexuality. In the book jacket, and several times throughout the book, Hibberd states that Owen was a homosexual. This is evidently shown through his connections with various personages who were homosexuals, including his friend and mentor, fellow soldier and poet, Siegfried Sassoon. While I don't doubt that this was the truth regarding Owen's sexuality, Hibberd seems a little over-insistent with too little to back it up. Yet perhaps this is due to the inconsistencies that exist in the mystery surrounding Wilfred Owen. Hibberd makes it known that much was done by Owen's brother Harold to paint his brother (as well as himself and the family name) in a better light. As curator of his brother's letters, Harold took great pains to destroy any references that could be suspicious, which must include references to Owen's sexual preferences. As seemingly complete as this biography is, Hibberd himself points out in his epilogue that there are facts about Owen's life that we may never know.

This book is an engaging read for any fan of World War I or any fan of poetry. The literary world is much indebted to Owen, whose poetry spoke the truth in a time or darkness, and whose innovations with style and technique were revered by the very poets he once emulated. If only the literary world was aware of this. Perhaps Dominic Hibberd's book will finally grant Owen his distinguished place and well-deserved fame in modern literature. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars encouraging heartwarming and entertaining true stories
After reading this book I looked up Fr. Grassi's church and attended Mass there. He wasn't the priest at that service, so I didn't hear one of his famous sermons, but I could tell this author's love of life and people has infected his parish. The story that sticks in my mind was when newleweds invited him for dinner, and the bride's discussion of having thawed and refrozen the lasagna made him suspect (correctly) that he'd get food poisoning if he ate it. He ate it. If there were more priests like this man, "fallen-away" Catholics wouldn't be America's second largest denomination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loving life and people
What an interesting way to percieve life- in a positive light rather than doom and gloom. Makes you want to take a look at how many times similar events could have occurred in ones own life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming stories that make you smile and make you think.
The author obviously has enjoyed and is enjoying his life. After reading his stories it caused me to reflect on my life and helped me realize that it is so easy to dismiss events and people as not important when ,in fact, there is nothing else more impactful if we only take a little time to appreciate the effects they have on us. This book is comfortable, feel good reading. ... Read more

Editorial Review

From the opening pages, as Dominic Hamilton describes skipping up the rocky path to Venezuela's Angel Falls like an overexcited schoolboy, you know you're in for something different--and good--with this travel guide. Every travel guide series has its niche, and Traveler's Companion's is adventure and romance. Which is to say, this book spends most of its pages getting you enthused about the adventures waiting for you, rather than boring you with dry information and dull history lessons. Hamilton, a British journalist who has lived in Venezuela for almost a decade, has the inside scoop and shares the country's glories enthusiastically. Dubbed "Paradise on Earth" by Columbus himself, Venezuela still lives up to its nickname. Hamilton describes its "top spots" with a string of superlatives--Venezuela is home to the world's highest waterfall (Angel Falls), more bird species than in North America and Europe put together, the longest and highest cable car in the world, and more Caribbean coast than any other country in the region. Once Hamilton has whetted your appetite, it's on to "Your Choice," a section devoted to describing the myriad activities available, such as hiking, scuba diving, fishing, mountain biking, and horseback riding, most of it in 40 national parks and monuments. There's also adventure tourism in the form of paragliding, mountaineering, and white-water rafting, family fun, the arts, and fiestas throughout the year. The bulk of the book is devoted to descriptions of various regions of the country, with listings of what to see and where to stay and eat broken down by price range. The sections are well designed and clearly marked, which makes for quick access. While the maps are fairly inadequate, the full-color photographs bring out all the color and variety of the place, with its azure waters, golden dunes, craggy mountain ranges, and festively dressed peoples. And yes, there is a history section, but it's lively. Finally, the "Traveler's Tips" section has been relegated to the back where it belongs. Sure, it's important stuff--transportation, exchanging money, health concerns, and an excellent guide to Venezuelan Spanish--but after all, you're traveling for the adventure, right? Well, pick up this guide and go. You're in able hands. --Lesley Reed ... Read more

(Planeta.com Journal) - We've waited several years for the publication of this excellent guidebook. Dominic has been a frequent contributor to Planeta.com. Who better to pass along choice tips for travelers eyeing the South American country of Venezuela? Maps and a thorough index are a big plus. Lavish color photos by Anthony Cassidy compliment the text. This is your guide to Angel Falls, Margarita Island and the magnificent tepuis. The book also provides an in-depth look at what makes the capital of Caracas just an interesting city. Highly recommended!
