I've been in the landscaping business in Colorado for twelve years, and I wish I'd had this book before now. We have many Spanish speaking workers in Colorado, and this book comes in handy every day. 1-0 out of 5 stars Not to the point
This book will explain how the rules were created and turned to what they are today. Who cares how they came to be, the only important thing is what you can and cannot do under the circumstances. It will explain what to consider, in general terms, when valuing distressed companies. But what discount rate should you use? How would you value different assets? It doesn't explain. There are no numbers in this book. It's not practical. It's like buying a cooking book and when you want to know how to make a cake the book reads: "use eggs, milk, flower and mix". Ok, thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars What to Do...What Not to Do
Every executive should make active use of a basic reference library of about 12-15 business books; Workouts & Turnarounds II should be one them. Edited by Dominic DiNapoli, it consists of 21 different chapters, written (or co-authored) by experts on various subjects. These chapter titles suggest some of the issues which are addressed:

• Trouble-Spotting: Assessing the Likelihood of a Turnaround

• Looming Financial or Business Failure: Fix or File -- A Legal Perspective

• Preparing for Bankruptcy: Building the War Chest

• The Lawyer's Role in Representing the Distressed Company

• The Accountant's Role in the Workout Environment

• Dealing with Employee Issues in a Bankruptcy Situation

• Mergers and Acquisition Strategies for the Distressed Company

At one time or another, all organizations experience serious problems. Many of them eventually recover. The wealth of information and advice provided in this single volume explains HOW. Other organizations, unable to solve their problems, are either liquidated or acquired. This book explains WHY. I know of no other single volume which offers more and better information about workouts and turnarounds, corporate restructuring, and bankruptcy proceedings. This book can be of substantial value to those involved with a distressed organization. It was written primarily for them. However, I think this book can also be of substantial value to those whose organization is (at the moment) thriving and who are determined to sustain that success. Knowing what NOT to do is often as important as knowing what to do. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read if you've ever said, "love the sinner; hate the sin"
... I am a straight graduate student in psychology who has spent the last 8 months as a volunteer with a local gay telephone switchboard. I read this book as background for a paper I am writing that attempts to defend adoption by gay/lesbian parents. It covers all the basics - homophobia and its internalization, the coming out process, GLBT relationships, parenting, aging, etc. Each is addressed as a blend of theory with case studies so that the reading is smooth, entertaining and interesting. It is written from a British perspective with an occasional colloquialism, and the appendices are not useful here in the States.

But I am so glad that I read this book. My neurology class convinced me that the etiology of homosexuality is biological. Spong convinced me that the moral condemnation of homosexuality is wrong in "Living in Sin." "Pink Therapy" helped me to feel the pain of those society has rejected, to understand how hard it must be to overcome the temptation toward self-loathing such rejection breeds, and to respect the courage of those who have dared to be what they were made.

In my evangelical past it was often said that we should "love the sinner while hating the sin." I now understand what was wrong with this statement. By presuming to judge my gay brother or my lesbian sister, I am wounding them. With God's help I will do so no longer.

Read this book with an open heart and mind. You might learn more than you ever thought you could.

This book is for all professional helpers who have clients who do not conform to the heterosexual mold and need to be suported in their life choices/circumstances. As opposed to a number of books proporting to be for therapists working with a similar client base, Pink Therapy offers no cures or therapies for the 'affliction' of non-heterosexuality, but recognises the wonder and value of it and offers therapists and clients an understanding of the value of recognising this and building on that value to move forward in life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gospel of Thomas
A book for research, and also for curiosity, The Gospel of Thomas, Unearthing the Lost Words of Jesus, tells the reader, not only the sacred text, but the history of the Gnostic people. But what is fantastic about the actual text is the uncertainty of it, which makes you ponder about it, and wonder what Jesus the Messiah, the prophet, or the madman was trying to say. Although lacking some detailed discussion on the gospel's sayings, it is a very well researched book that gives us points to look at dealing with spirituality and history itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a true book
I'm a Portuguese man who beleives in God and His son Jesus, and I assure to you that this book "Gospel of Thomas" and "The Gospel of Philip" and all those that were found in the Dead Sea and In Nag Hammadi are true, all that there is writen in them is from the time of Jesus to the 2nd century after his birth, you can buy them with security. Don't believe in those fanatics Protestants and Catholics who want the truth far away from God's children. The Bible was not completed, God said " I will give the wisdom word by word" and not all at the same time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Takes This For What It Is ¿ Fiction
The error of The Gospel of Thomas starts as early as the back cover. "Here were 100 lost sayings of Jesus that would rewrite early Christian history and introduce a new image of Jesus - unadulterated by 2000 years of myth and interpretation." The overwhelming majority of credible historians, both secular and nonsecular, date the writing of the New Testament documents to within one generation of the events they record. None place them later than the turn of the second century. Among these documents' greatest assets as historical records lies in the fact that they are eye-witness accounts, or are written by close associates of eye-witnesses. Myth and legend cannot arise until the second or third generation after events transpire because legend cannot grow while the eye-witnesses still live or while historical memory of the events is still fresh. It takes generations for truth to evolve into fiction.

The Gospel of Thomas is one of those fictions. This book was written in the second century, and in these pages, the evidence of myth and legend abound. In fact, the differences between the "lost sayings of Jesus" and the recorded historical sayings of Jesus are so vast that they have reached the realm of fantasy.

No reputable historian would agree with editors of this book that this gospel is "attributed to the Doubting Thomas of the New Testament." Nor do "most biblical scholars believe that Thomas represents one of the many independent schools of Christianity that developed early in the history of the religion." Fringe historians who do not follow the academics' standards for evaluation, yes. Reputable historians following the academics' standards for the evaluation of historical evidence, no. The editors apparently rely entirely on the members of the Jesus Seminar for their information when not even mainstream secular historians consider this group's research to be credible. The Jesus Seminar's skill is in spinning a story for the media, not evaluating historical evidence with an objective eye for the facts.

Those who would argue that the Gospel of Thomas is the accurate recording of the words of Christ have a dilemma. The overwhelming amount of historical and archeological evidence points to the New and Old Testaments as reliable documents of history. We may disagree about what they mean, but the documents themselves are accurate records of the events. Even more challenging for those who promote this "gospel" as authentic: All of the fundamental elements of the gospel taught by the New Testament Jesus are confirmed by first and second century secular, as well as religious, sources. For skeptics, the most important to consider is the secular - often hostile - record. When the teachings of the New Testament Jesus are authenticated by hostile sources in a secular culture that sought to destroy the Christian faith, there is no stronger proof of authenticity. So do we throw out the 66 books of the Bible and believe the Gospel of Thomas? Or do we recognize this gospel for what it is - fiction? Those who accept the Gospel of Thomas as reliable history do so based on preference, not the facts. Not only is the Gospel of Thomas a work of fiction, it is downright silly. The level of writing and philosophy is childish, at best.

For readers looking for the Jesus of history, and for proof that the New Testament is reliable as recorded - with proof coming from both secular as well as nonsecular sources - I recommend The Historical Jesus, written by respected historian Gary Habermas, who evaluates the life, death, and resurrection of Christ as recorded in the New Testament documents according to the most rigorous standards of academic scholarship. Or, better yet, read the New Testament itself.

Unlike all of the religions of the world, traditional Christianity is a historical faith. If you want to read about the Jesus of history, I urge you to read the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, not the fantasy of a man who called himself Thomas. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars These houses have more style than it appears
The book wasn't what I expected from a book with this title. But, I'm glad someone wrote it and wished they had focused more on the architecture, the many styles, and the seemingly endless stained glass designs in the front windows of the fancier bungalows. Overall it was very nice to see and a decent read. I had lived in one on a corner lot and appreciated the author's discussion of face brick, and other details on corner houses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Social History
"The Chicago Bungalow" is a collection of essays created as a companion volume to a Chicago Architectural Foundation exhibition staged in connection with the City's Historic Chicago Bungalow Initiative, which provides financing and other incentives to help bungalow owners improve and maintain their homes and communities. To this day, the bungalows themselves are an important part of Chicago's architectural heritage and the neighborhoods that grew up around them are part of what makes Chicago such a liveable city.

Although sponsored by an architectural organization, this book emphasizes social history rather than aesthetic appreciation. There is one brief essay on the characteristics of the bungalow (i.e., what is a bungalow and what, if anything, sets Chicago bungalows apart from those found in other areas of the country), but most of the rest of the text addresses how the various areas were developed by real estate tycoons and others, how bungalows were built and financed, how the modern conveniences they contained affected the lives of women, which social groups bought bungalows (interestingly, the non-Chicago authors seem to think these were middle class neighborhoods, while the Chicago authors mostly characterize them as working class), the social organizations of one bungalow community (Portage Park), and how neighborhoods have changed (primarily racially) over the years. (The latter essay mostly glosses over Chicago's sad history of segregation, racism, block busting and white flight.) I found the information on the "own your own home" movement (a relatively recent part of the American dream) and on the standardization of plumbing fixtures and non-standarization of wood trim particularly interesting. Black-and-white pictures throughout the book more or less illustrate the text (sometimes the connection is not obvious) and there is a 16-page section of color photos illustrating the diversity of forms and some of the decorative features of Chicago bungalows.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the origins of this housing form and how it affected the lives of working class Chicagoans. If your interest is confined to the aesthetic aspects of bungalows, however, this will not add much to what you already know.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bungalow Heaven
Nice book on Chicago's own bungalow tradition. Nice pictures of not only classic Chicago bungalows, but of many of it's inhabitants in the great Chicago Bungalow Belt. Only wish the book was longer and had more color photos, but it does show examples of my favorite part of the Chicago bungalows from the 1920's, art glass. They will NEVER build houses like these again. Attention to the Southside as well as the Northside belts. Recommended reading for us lay people who love Chicago's unique brick bungalows. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
It is no accident that Michael C. White's "The Garden of Martyrs" has received unqualified praise from the likes of Anita Shreve, Richard Russo, and A. Manette Ansay. This rich, compassionate, deeply moving novel will no doubt have an impact on American literature for years to come. As this novel amply illustrates, a talented writer can remind us that acts of courage and heroism can take many forms, and can reveal themselves in unlikely and surprising places. Michael White unpacks the crevices and narrow alleyways of "hidden" history, bringing it to life, suggesting how seemingly inconsequential and daily acts of courage and heroism can resonate throughout society and impact history. One will walk away from this novel emotionally drained, but inspired.

5-0 out of 5 stars I felt I lived it myself
Don't miss this book. You'll never forget it. The Garden of Martyrs is one of the best novels I have read, ever. White attends to every detail of the story with such artistic care that the physical, emotional, spiritual and communal forces at work step right off the page, along with the human actors and the physical settings--so strongly that I felt I was a witness to all the events, as a family member or close friend might have been; and by the end of the book, the story in that way, belonged to me as well, as a life experince in which I shared. If history is to be taught, it should be taught this way, a way in which way we can live it too; then we might not have to repeat its lessons. The Garden of Martyrs is a tour de force, and obviously a work of love.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
Just finished this book for my bookclub. I loved it! I would highly recommend it as a suggested bookclub read. I was immersed in the historical setting and found the characters moving and compelling. Although set in 1806, it is highly relevant to today's issues related to our judicial system and the insanity of a country, such as ours,in it's continued use of the death penalty. Anyone with Irish heritage, Catholic hertiage, an interest in history or simply a desire to be moved by a wonderful novel should read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
A friend from church gave this book to my wife to read. Roughly two weeks before that, my son was diagnosed with a mild form of autism. This struck a big blow to me as a father. After reading the book, my wife told me I needed to read it. While I read it, I was transported into Mary Sharp's world as she raised her son. It dealt with many of the issues and questions we had about ourselves and our future. Though not a "text book" like some other books that deal with Autism, "An Unexpected Joy" deals with the emotional struggles that they faced. I could definitely relate as we have been facing the some of the same issues. I would recommend this to any parent, especially those with "normal" kids, because it helps you understand those special ones. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars OK first-generation amp tone/rig setup book
Mentions guitar speaker distortion on page 20, portraying power amp and speaker distortion as "an essential ingredient for guitar amps".

Mentions "amplifier circuitry and speaker overload", p 22. Page 26 mentions power amp distortion, and a power mode (1/2-power) switch, and shows a photo of the Marshall PowerBrake: "Powerbrake, which is a heavy-duty volume control capable of absorbing the power of a flat-out amp to deliver the same tone at a lower volume..." This is the ideal, not the reality; many people hold that the THD Hot Plate is more transparent than the Marshall PowerBrake, but both products have a characteristic EQ response that manifests even with just a few dB of attenuation, and in addition, heavy attenuation inherently drives the guitar speaker differently, with less roundness and complexity, and this in turn affects the power-tube response. It's odd that the author doesn't mention the Hot Plate, which is often favored over the PowerBrake, given that page 61 shows a photo of a guitarist (Carl V.?) with gear that includes a THD Hot Plate, low in the rack, behind the mic stand.

The book doesn't mention other solutions to the loudness problem including London Power's Power Scaling, the Peale Power Sag technology, and speaker isolation cabinets, and doesn't mention that the power reduction switch is 1/4-power on many amps, nor does it propose using truly low-wattage tube power amps such as 5 watts down to a fraction of a watt.

Page 76 mentions the problem of integrating a guitar preamp/processor with a tube amp, but doesn't have any specific advice; it leaves the reader dangling with a vague recommendation to do "judicious reprogramming" and "serious tweaking and comparisons", rather than providing useful insight and practical guidance.

From the start, this series makes a potentially fatal mistake of separating without integrating guitars, amps, and effects. The "getting guitar sounds" books make more sense for those whose goal is to look at the combination of guitar, amp, and effects as a way of producing a target sound. How does a single-coil neck pickup, through a slow phaser, into a distorted tube power amp sound? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars From Science to Art
I was very disappointed with this book form the outset. In the preface, the author analizes the problem of computer game design in that "it is sorely lacking in formal, documented methods for predictable and repeatable success". He cuncludes that he would have this art form (the computer game) evolve into a craft, and maybe into a science.

Mr. Laramee seems to be forgetting that, for every medium, the process of evolution begins with a science - the technology of the medium. So it was with music, literature, certainly cinema. He seems to misunderstand that the only craft here is the ability to speak the medium's language, and this is what should be evolved. He further forgets that art, the greatest possible achievment for any medium, while possible, is still very far off from today's computer games, both because we still do not control the language well enough and because many are only interested in this medium as a form of entertainment. No great work is the product of formalized rules of success, and those works which are created using these rules are justly disrespected.

The book itself goes little in the way of aiding the process of evolving the language - instead of presenting princicples, it presents facts, and its essays, while practical, seem, for the most part, to be based on half-baked theories(like the claim I remember from one article that problem solving without having other people's experience to rely on is a new phenomenon), and are therefore not quite enlightning.

Overall, a misguided attempt at going backwards in time, farther away from the culmination of the medium and closer to its humble beginnings. Overburdened with practical mechanics and sorely lacking in ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great book on Design and Perspective

5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Political Biography Lives
With style and sophistication, Dominic Sandbrook's book traces the fortunes of liberalism through the career of former Minnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy. For anyone wanting to know why the Democrats have won the White House only three times since 1968: read this book. Along with liberalism's decline, Sandbrook also traces the rise of Reagan's conservatism and the rise of neo-conservatism, both of which have converged, with depressing results, in the current Bush administration. Moreover, McCarthy's eventful life itself makes for compelling reading. This is an outstanding example of political biography, a rare breed these days. Beuatifully written, tightly argued, and exhaustively researched, this is a must-read for anyone voting in November!

5-0 out of 5 stars Telling it like it was
In this thoroughly researched and entertainingly written biography, British historian Dominic Sandbrook explores the highs and lows of Minnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy's public life. Best know for his iconic 1968 presidential campaign and opposition to the war in Vietnam, Sandbrook places this well-known episode within the broader context of both McCarthy's own career and the shifting fortunes of Democratic Party liberalism. Sandbrook presents a nuanced explanation of how, by the middle 1960s, the party of Franklin Roosevelt had come to be deeply divided - with new black and radical constituencies pitted against old city bosses and organized labor; and the party itself increasingly out of touch with the 'bread and butter' concerns of white working class voters. While the story that Sandbrook tells is often a depressing one - charting failure at least as much as success, it is both an important tale, and one that is well told. His judgements on McCarthy's personality have been criticized by some as too harsh, but in fact Sandbrook goes to great lengths to be fair - dishing out praise as well as condemnation. Overall then, this is an engaging book, and essential reading for all who are interested in how modern American politics has come to be the way it is. Sandbrook's 'Eugene McCarthy', though, is unlikely to satisfy those who prefer to see the Senator as a heroic idealist, rather than as a flawed politician, who ultimately failed to fulfil his considerable potential and contributed significantly to the decline of his own party.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Politics of Personality
History will forever record Eugene McCarthy as the anti-war insurgent who felled a sitting President. But as Dominic Sandbrook demonstrates, McCarthy's legacy is much more nuanced and tortured than popularly imagined.

If you fondly recall McCarthy's '68 campaign (this reader is too young to have any recollection of it whatsoever), Sandbrook's book is sure to give you pause. It portrays a reactionary eccentric often lost in the "Golden Age" of the Thirteenth Century; a lazy, often disengaged lawmaker with little to show for a 22-year legislative career; a spiteful, mean-spirited loner given to caustic mocking of friends and rivals alike; an untrustworthy person of questionable ethics despite strong Catholic convictions (a daily churchgoer who twice enrolled in the Benedictine order); a venal, self-absorbed politican who time and again puts himself ahead of loyalty to patrons and Party.

This reader was struck by how thoroughly the Politics of Personality animates this book:

* McCarthy supported first Humphrey then Stevenson in '60 because he believed that he -- not JFK -- deserved to be the first Irish Catholic President. ("I'm twice as liberal as Humphrey and twice as Catholic as Kennedy.")
* McCarthy's personal animus for LBJ (his one-time patron) had its origins not in Vietnam policy, but McCarthy's treatment during the '64 VP selection process. ("What a sadistic son of a bitch.")
* McCarthy's stated reason for launching his '68 campaign was to either compel LBJ to change his Vietnam policy or prod RFK to enter the race. When RFK finally did announce for President, McCarthy reneged on this commitment. (McCarthy's nonplussed reaction to news of RFK's murder: "He brought it on himself, demagoguing to the last.")
* When Humphrey (a McCarthy patron dating back to '48) finally wrested the Democratic nomination, a brooding McCarthy refused to lift a finger in support, finally offering a desultory endorsement a week before the election. More vigorous support from McCarthy certainly could have been enough for Humphrey to close a 500,000 popular vote deficit. (Humphrey: "The only tender a politican has is his word and Gene's currency is devalued ... A strange man.")

This book is filled with revelatory (for this reader) anecdotes. For example: Humphrey probably financially supported McCarthy's insurgency to brake RFK in the primaries. (Humphrey did not compete in the primaries.)

In terms of engrossing storylines and powerful personalities, the Sixties represented the high war mark of Presidential politics. This new McCarthy biography is a terrific read for anyone looking to broaden their knowledge of that epoch, although readers will be hard pressed to come away with an enhanced opinion of McCarthy himself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What the World Needs Now
Serene Dominic follows one of the most brilliant -- and unwieldy -- song catalogs in all of pop music and makes the journey as intoxicating as a great Bacharach/David tune. Authoritative and painstakingly researched, it's respectful but irreverent, critically incisive but always delivered with the enthusiasm of a genuine music lover. This wonderful book will stand as the bible for Burt fanatics around the world. Thanks to Dominic, there's always something there to remind us of Bacharach's unique greatness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Burtography!
In an amazing feat of research and Bacharach fandom, Dominic Salerno traces the maestro's every songwriting move, from 1952 to the present. Going in, I considered myself a knowledgable Bacharach fan, but there I was, surprised and delighted by some new fact or tidbit on nearly every page. As Burt admits in a back-of-the-book interview, Dominic knows more about the back catalog than he does himself. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars AS BRILLIANT AS ITS SUBJECT, AND FUNNY TO BOOT
Serene Dominic has written the book that anyone interested in Bacharach (or popular music of the 20th century) has been waiting for. This amazingly complete discography is written in such a breezy, amusing style you won't be able to put it down. Reproductions of period graphics, such as record jackets and sheet music covers help readers place the songs in the context of their times. Burt Bacharach himself vouches for the book's accuracy on a cover blurb. Well-researched, informative, colorful, and fun to read, this is sure to become a classic of pop music literature. ...
