You just can't go wrong with this book
This is one of the best bread books I have ever used! The recipes are easy and they work. I use a stand mixer with hook attachment and the dough comes out perfect every time. The ingredients are easy to find so there is no searching for that elusive exotic ingredient. I can't say enough good things about this book. If you can only buy one bread making book this would be my first choice!

Outstanding Book
This must be the best bread baking book out there. Each recipe is accompanied by the bread machine version so there is no guessing on how it should be modified. The ingredients are easy to obtain in any market. I also love the side-bars concerning the monastic life. This makes the book a fun read on a rainy day even if you don't make any of the breads.

An excellent guide to advanced memory training
If you are just starting out learning how to improve your memory, then a book by Harry Lorayne might be more appropriate for you. But if you already have a trained memory and want to take your skills to the next level, then I recommend this title strongly. O'Brien explains his DOMINIC system quite well in this work; now I understand why he uses people instead of only objects. While I don't believe that a beginner would find the DOMINIC system as easy to learn and use as the Major System, I still encourage people to try both apporaches to determine which works best for them.

Dominic also expatiates on his language learning approach, offers mathematical shortcuts, and presents ways to memorize quotes and speeches. Some great ideas based largely on the loci system can be found here.

In many ways I like this updated version of How to Pass Exams better than How to Develop a Perfect Memory, another book by O'Brien that I own. Dominic has contributed some unique refinements to the field of mnemotechny, so I view his books as worthwhile purchases for any memory training expert and perhaps for a few mnemonics neophytes, too. ... A mixed collection, but a must-have for Stoppard fans
Let's face it; if you're looking at Volume Two of a collection, you're already a fan. This is a collection of short radio plays, mainly from early in Stoppard's career. Some are minor classics (Dominic Boot, Albert's Bridge) and others are forgettable. However, all of them show the true Stoppard spark, wit and intellect. An excellent introduction to Plotinus
This book is more conventional than Pierre Hadot's remarkable study on Plotinus (see my review), since its regressive mode of exposition - from body to soul, Intellect and finally the One - is the most widely used in Neoplatonic studies. Staying close to the Enneads, O'Meara skillfully expounds these hierarchical levels, and he is especially adept at explaining how they relate to each other. The book is more than a simple catalogue of doctrinal tenets: unlike some other scholars of Neoplatonism, O'Meara is fully aware that one can't write about Plotinus' thought without considering the life experience it both presupposes and leads to. Neoplatonic speculation, however abstract it may seem at first, is never distinct from man's situation in the world. (This awareness on O'Meara's part is not surprising: in many articles and a recent book, he seeked to refute the commonly shared contention according to which the Neoplatonists were apolitical.) The author concludes his book with a brief but insightful assessment of Plotinus' influence on Western thought. Great title, minimal quality
Boy, talk about a misleading title....this book is neither sexy nor romantic, not really bad/awful, just not very good. It's near impossible to even finish it while looking for an interesting story.

From another erotic writer's point of view
As I too am a writer of erotica, I believe my critique of Kate's book goes deeper than most, tougher, if you will. I was more than pleasantly surprised and entertained in the diversity and quality of her writing. Her book which offers a collection of her best short stories were unique from most read in any anthology. I commend her for going where most dare not go. Her stories being truly wicked yet, non-judgmental. She writes with conscious in a society that rarely seems to show one as she fluidly builds in safe sex measures that actually enhance and do not take away from the hot sex shown. From one who reads dozens of stories weekly, this is a book I would recommend to any who delight in adult pleasures.

The best 40 bucks you'll expend in a RPG book
This book is simply the definitive guide to post-apocalyptic D20 gamming. It's the only reason why I got the D20 modern and it's a great improvement over the 1st edition. Its 380 pages include everything you need, from starting ocupations, to classes and advanced classes, new feats, skills and a revamped and very balanced mutation system, equipment, environmental hazards, and much more. Ah, and it's very superior to the Gamma World.

brilliant post apocalypse rpg
First did d&d back in 1978. then came across gamma world, post apocalypse is a pet love of mine. got every GW book there is. waited for the new version, and disappointed, but saw about Darwins World in a review. Bought it, brilliant. very well structured, well written, deals with the genre very well. has a bit of the dark side that I like in this sort of gaming/fiction.
BONUS : free adventures available on line, and they are good introductory adventures.
As a source book for any post-apocalypse game this is great. as a game in itself it is great. Mutants, and more mutants, what more could you want.

Darwin's World Is Crunchy
I was thinking of purchasing the new Gamma World Supplement, however after reading the many negative reviews and checking out the supplement myself, I chose not to buy the new Gamma World.

I was a little bummed because I loved Gamma World as a kid. Interestingly nearly every review I read of Gamma World said it was not as good as Darwin's World.

I decided to see for myself. I went the the publishers web site and downloaded a few supplements. I enjoyed the supplements so much, I bought the hard copy of the 2nd edition.

Here are things I liked:
The price is good for what you get. I comes in nice hard bound book with 400 pages of very rich and detailed solid gaming rules and background materials.

I really enjoyed reading the background material. The bizzare 1950's esque history of Darwin's world is very well done. Lots of gaming advice and ideas.

The publisher has a great web site with lots of freebies.

I am not so happy about the following.
You have to buy D20 Modern to play Darwin's world. Not a major nit as Gamma World is the same.

The internal pages of the book are all black and white, wish there was more color, but I guess this would add to the price.

I wish there was more back ground information on the Eastern US and what happened to the rest of the world.

I am not crazy about the character classes offered. There are too many if you ask me.

Any way overall the product is very good and I felt the money spent was well worth it.

I would recommend this book over the Gamma World book for anyone looking for a Post Apocylyptic RPG. ... Read more

One of the best accounts of Japanese Imprisonment
This was one of the best books on the subject of the Bataan death March and Philippine Invasion that I've read. Col. Alexander's personal account brings the events upfront and real to the reader. You truly feel part of the Col.'s ordeal. I reccomend it highly.

Great book
This is what I look for in an art book, many large good quality reproductions of the work with a minimum of pretentious text. Let me look at the images first and decide what I think about them, then I can go read what the artist or some critic/historian thinks, not the other way around, as far too many books do.

I like the fact that Dumas does what she feels at the time she does it, so there is a lot of variety in this book, it is not the same piece over and over again. She is not like a lot of artist, simply becoming clichés of themselves at the 1st signs of success, she continues to experiment and try different things, which she is criticized for, however, I think that criticism is short sited. There is something fresh, loose and free about her work that I admire. Granted I don't like her work as much as when I first viewed it a few years ago (reflecting my own development as an artist) but it is still one of my favorite books and I would recommend it to anyone interested in contemporary art.

My only critic comes from my own bias, in that I find some of her content overly simplified clichés of women's issues and feminist theory. .........And I'm annoyed by the fact that If I, as a male artist, created some of the images she's created, I'd be lynched by NOW(or some other WWB-Whiny Women's Brigade as I've coined them) as being a misogynist pig.

A SURPRISE PACKAGE!
I had seen a self-portrait done by Marlene Dumas in an art book and it blew me away. I did not know who she was or her main specialty. I knew I had to see more of her body of work... I quickly found this Phaedon publication, crossed my fingers and ordered it. When it finally arrived...I poured over it. It is now a few months later and I am still pouring over it. I particularly like the interviews and personal input Helene has had into the publication – this is her book and her philosophies – she puts herself out there for you to see her and to "get inside her head". The layout is very contemporary which adds to the presentation of her imagery. The reproductions of her work are plentiful and I am impressed with the range of her work through her different "periods". The text is concise and confronting in its subject matter, ranging from her life in apartheid Africa to the freedom of Amsterdam. This book is a must for art students and art lovers alike. It holds the key to an modern artist and, as an art student, has inspired me. I am looking forward to seeing more publications about her current work.
