Editorial Review

Product Description
Biochemistry Molecular Biology of Plants is a major contribution to the plant sciences literature, superbly edited by three distinguished scientists, Bob B. Buchanan, Wilhelm Gruissem, and Russell L. Jones, with contributions from more than 50 world-renowned scientists. With over 1,400 pages, 1,100 full-colour original drawings and 500 photographs this work qualifies, in the words of the Science reviewer, as:

"an essential reference for practicing plant biologists and for the increasing number of scientists from other disciplines who are entering the field of plant biology. To exploit fully the wealth of new information provided by the genome projects and to integrate the metabolic, regulatory, and signal transduction pathways of complex organisms, biologists will require a solid command of biochemistry and physiology. For this reason, the publication of Biochemistry Molecular Biology of Plants could not have come at a more opportune and auspicious time."

This book is meticulously organised and richly illustrated, useful both for teaching and for reference. The multi-authored work provides a contemporary view of its subject, including molecular biology, cell biology, and plant physiology, integrated around the themes of:

  • compartmentation
  • cell reproduction
  • energetics
  • metabolism
  • development
Read the words of the reviewer in CELL:

"The great strength of this book is that it has integrated its three major components (molecular biology, cell biology, and plant biochemistry) in each of the 24 chapters, resulting in a comprehensive analysis of a multitude of specific topics."

Who should buy this spectacular new text?

  • Plant biologists and scientists in related fields
  • Professors in departments of plant biology, plant biochemistry, plant physiology, and related fields
  • Graduate and upper-level undergraduate students of plant biology
  • Researchers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and agribusiness industries

A CD-ROM of all illustrative matter in the book is available separately. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry of plants & more...
This is another book you should find from a bookshelf of a sophisticated plant biologist ;)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, bad binding
The book is great, one of the best to learn everything about plant biology. Good explanations and pictures. Binding could be better, hardcover shouldn't be that expensive.... Losing some pages aleady after a few weeks.

2-0 out of 5 stars low value
I borrowed this book from a library during graduate school and found it to be very helpful in reviewing plant biochemistry. It is well written and has a fair amount of detail. The illustrations were well done and helpful. In spite of all the book has going for it however, it is outrageously expensive. In fairness, it is a fat book at nearly 1400 pages.Nevertheless the content does not justify the extremely high price tag, and I am disappointed that the publishers expect students to cough up this amount of money for a single text.

4-0 out of 5 stars love it
This book has the basis of Molecular and cell Biology that make you well armed. It has great pictures too. The biochemistry also is awesome, you'll find all the pathways you want. I even not gonna sell it after i graduate. I prefer keep it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Plant Biol. book out there
I am a PhD candidate in Plant Sciences and I work with both applied and basic researchers who work on all aspects of plant biology/agriculture etc.Everyone I work with and myself included feel that this is the best single plant biology text. It is a few years old now so some of the mol. biology will be outdated, and a couple of examples have since been proven to be different than described in the book, but this is minor. This is for the adv. undergrad or graduate student and if you are a graduate student in plant biology you should have this book-it is very expensive, but nearly every post-doc/grad student I know has a copy. Get the hardcover it will hold up better. ... Read more

    Product Description
Ninfa/Ballou/Benore is a solid biochemistry lab manual, dedicated to developing research skills in students, allowing them to learn techniques and develop the organizational approaches necessary to conduct laboratory research.

Ninfa/Ballou/Benore focuses on basic biochemistry laboratory techniques with a few molecular biology exercises, a reflection of most courses which concentrate on traditional biochemistry experiments and techniques. The manual also includes an introduction to ethics in the laboratory, uncommon in similar manuals. Most importantly, perhaps, is the authors' three-pronged approach to encouraging students to think like a research scientist: first, the authors introduce the scientific method and the hypothesis as a framework for developing conclusive experiments; second, the manual's experiments are designed to become increasingly complex in order to teach more advanced techniques and analysis; finally, gradually, the students are required to devise their own protocols. In this way, students and instructors are able to break away from a "cookbook" approach and to think and investigate for themselves.

Suitable for lower-level and upper-level courses; Ninfa spans these courses and can also be used for some first-year graduate work. ... Read more

The lab manual was shipped in a timely manner! It was in excellent condition on the inside and the outside! Will buy from this seller in the future!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent lab manual for Biochemistry
I used this book as a lab manual for my Biochemistry class in college. The book itself is well organized in most respects. However, there are some parts that were well explained in the manual when it came to trying to answer the problems at the end of each experiment. Some of the examples given in the pre-lab didn't apply to the questions being asked so it would lead our class to having to nag the professor for some answers on how to solve the problem. Overall though the techniques employed are relative and effective when it comes to the biochemistry field.

    Product Description
The first book in two decades to address this multi-faceted field, The Toxicology and Biochemistry of Insecticides provides the most up-to-date information on insecticide classification, formulation, mode of action, resistance, metabolism, environmental fate, and regulatory legislation. The book draws on the author’s groundbreaking research in insect detoxification. It discusses mechanisms at the molecular level such as specific enzymes that contribute to insecticide resistance, the modification of which can change insecticide susceptibility and influence host plant selections in phytophagous insects.
Beginning with a general introduction, eleven chapters integrate classical toxicology with physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology to present a comprehensive look at the field. The book discusses the demand and formulation of pesticides and describes each type from dusts and powders to baits and aerosols. It classifies insecticides by target, chemical compound, and mechanism; evaluates toxicity testing procedures; explains pesticide uptake, mode of action, and metabolism; and explores species differences, resistance, and interactions. It also considers pesticides in the environment and federal and state regulatory legislation and enforcement.
A long-awaited, state-of-the-science review on insect toxicology, this indispensable book brings you up-to-date on the many aspects and implications of pesticide use and provides the necessary background and platform from which to conduct future research. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Cleverly Designed Book
Some biochemistry books proceed to describe metabolic pathways with scant reference to the physiological context in which they occur and then fill the conceptual gap by including a chapter on regulation and integration of metabolism. Not this thoughtful and cleverly designed book. From the start the authors make it clear that they are going to tell us the story in terms of one crucial unifying concept: which pathways are activated or inactivated when we eat or when we fast?

With this approach the reader never loses sight of the big picture, ie, what's going on in the body at any particular time. And then, when we do reach the chapter on integration of metabolism, most of the work has already been done for us: the chapter then operates as a useful review of what we have already been told.

The book does not miss any opportunity to make us think in terms of the big picture, and furthermore, it is never afraid of saying something more than once if it needs to. Just one example to illustrate this point: Lipoprotein lipase. Action and properties of this enzyme are detailed in the context of digestion of chylomicrons (p 497), storage of TAGs in adipocytes (p 512), integration of metabolism (p 561) and the influence of insulin levels on gene expression of the enzyme (p 564).

The early introduction of the fed and starved states is also useful in other ways. The student perceives right away what the point is of learning those endless metabolic pathways and studies them with much more enthusiasm and not just thinking that biochemistry is but an unnecessary obstacle they have to overcome to get to the more clinical stuff (at least I'd like to think so!). Inspired by this book I have organized my course in that way and I am convinced that it is the best approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Lucid, yet encylopedic
This book is different from its contemporaries in many ways. First of all is written in a clinical approach format which is very interesting for medical students. Most of the biochemistry textbooks are dry and vast and difficult to grasp the information needed for a medico.
But the Marks helps to learn to use biochemistry in the process of Clinical Problem Solving. With a lot of diagrams and clear text it is easy understand.
The Clinical Material is presented in the form of real patients.
It is a student friendly text with which you can learn biochemistry in a funny way of solving the clinical cases.
It can be used as a main textbook for self study.
I strongly recommend the Marks for all medical students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marks Biochemistry
This books is great. If you want to leran biochemistry within a month, buy it.I think it is the best book.It is perfect for your exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Pretty Good for USMLE
Texts are not easily to follow. Diagrams and help notes scatters around pages which make readers confused. If you are preparing for Step 1, I recommend you study Lippincott Biochemistry, Board Review Series.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best biochemistry book (easy and comprehensive)
I love this book on biochemistry simply because it was the easiest to read, with diagrams and pictures even dumb people like me can read (gg).I also found that it is very comprehensive also. Some of the other titles I've read on the subject (Lippincott, Harper's) did not go into the detail of this one.Another positive note is that this is a clinical book also; giving you case studies in each chapter to test your knowledge.I can't say enough about this book and even referred it to one of my friends.Although not required in Chiropractic College (Lippincott was), it should have been the standard. ... Product Description
The third edition of The Physiology and Biochemistry of Prokaryotes covers the basic principles of prokaryotic physiology, biochemistry, and cell behavior. It presents microbial metabolism in the context of the chemical and physical problems that cells must solve in order to grow.

Written in a clear, straightforward manner, the book provides a modern perspective on the diversity of microorganisms, and an updated account of the major aspects prokaryotes, such as cell structure, metabolism, developmental biology, environmental adaptation, biofilm formation, and cellular signaling pathways. It is organized according to topic rather than by organism, therefore helping students understand the general principles of physiology and metabolism. Each chapter ends with thought-provoking study questions, a summary, and an extensive list of references to outside research literature students may go to for more information and detailed explanations of material in the text.

The Physiology and Biochemistry of Prokaryotes, Third Edition, is ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses on microbial physiology of bacterial metabolism. It can be used in conjunction with a laboratory manual, Microbial Physiology and Biochemistry Laboratory: A Quantitative Approach, by David White and George D. Hegeman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
The book was new and I was happy to receive it on time! I recommend it to other people that want to buy it and need it fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars satisfactory purchase
The book is indeed in good condition, few notes taken. The pages are clean and like brand-new. The seller was fast in response to my questions. And the order arrives pretty fast, in two days. Overall, vary satisfactory with the purchase. BTW, this is a pretty readable book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Old School vs. New School Bacterial Metabolism
As the review title suggests, I come from the old school of studying bacterial metabolism. My choice, still all these years after grad school and years of research & work, is H.W. Doelle's Bacterial Metabolism (unfortunately out of print). However, I discovered White's text while visiting the University of Oklahoma 2 years ago (the 2nd edition). The 3rd edition is an improvement with better diagrams and drawings. The collection of symbols and equations at the front of the book is very usefull with having it all in one place. However, Doelle'a approach is in some ways more stimulating with the first 2 chapters dealing with the thermodynamics, enzymology, and growth kinetics immediately. If you are weak in the areas of bacterial structures and dynamics, White gives an excellent approach to all of the cellur structures of prokaryotes.Doelle on the other hand concentrates exclusively on the actual chemistry of bacterial metabolism.Another strength of White is his introduction to solute & protein transportation.Along with this, White's final 2 chapters on adaptation and environmental stress response are very valuable additions.Without White's approach to increasing the reader's understanding the environment and its impact on the microbe, the study of metabolism is only an esoteric exercise. One of my major frustrations with White's work was the lack of extensive references of the various metabolic pathways and types with specific genus and/or species of bacteria. It is left up to the reader to find alternate sources for this application.Doelle, on the other hand, provides copious references. In the end, I believe White's work to be a central addition to the understanding and manipulation of the microbial metabolic processes. With the microbial world being "our enemy - our friend," White's work will go along way in helping us fragile humans to compete and coexist with this diverse group that co-inhabits this singular orb with us.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Microbiology Reference
This is an excellent resource for biochemical pathways, relationships, and diagrams of prokaryotic physiology. The written material is particularly lucid, which is greatly appreciated. While the diagrams are simple and in black-and-white print, their reduced complexity lends clarity to the concepts illustrated. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the microbial sciences at the upper-undergraduate level and beyond.

3-0 out of 5 stars A difficult but useful book
Although it seems impossible to have just one text on the huge field of microbial physiology, this book makes a very valiant effort to be just that. The details are painstakingly researched, the text is concise and clear (no fluff anywhere!), and for such a small book, the author does a masterful job of presenting a huge amount of useful information.

Of course, every book has its downfalls, the main one of this book being its lack of helpful illustrations.Sometimes you just MUST HAVE some help visually to understand something (e.g. mixed acid fermentation, sporulation) and this book often didn't offer that.(Even if there WAS a figure, it was so hard to decipher that you'd be better off with nothing at all.)Also, some huge areas of microbial physiology were completely left out like bacterial stress response.

Overall, not the best but not the worst. It's certainly not a waste of money, but you might want to have some sort of companion book to supply your diagrams and illustrations. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars terrible
this book is terrible - hardly any info, almost no clinical information, no questions.go with lippincott

3-0 out of 5 stars Not A Standalone
My experience with this book was a positive one.Well as positive as studying for the boards can get anyway. This text is good for one thing, the overall picture and how the biochem of lipid, carb, and AA metabolism all fits together. This book IS NOT, I REPEAT, NOT! a standalone. However, combine this book with Qbank and First Aide and you will be reasonably prepared for the biochem questions.PROS - fast read, good overall picture of biochemical metabolismCONS - expensive, weak on some subjects ie, heme synthesis and porphyrias.Overall this is a good study aide for Step 1.

2-0 out of 5 stars In need of serious revision...
I purchased several of the high yield and brs reviews for dental boards. As far as the high yield series goes, this one is by far the worst. Most of what is in this book is really basic info, like stuff you learned in Cell Biology as an undergraduate student. It may get you through the boards, but I really doubt this alone could help achieve a high score. Either save your twenty-five bucks and use your class notes, or buy another review text...cause this one sucks!

    1-0 out of 5 stars A caring man's advice: DON'T BUY IT
This book is as unethical as reviews ever come.....Unbelievably expensive 25 USD for its value.A lot of essential very high yield materials are NOT even mentioned.A lot of low yield irrelevant materials mentioned.I dont think the author had a clue what is important. If you wanna a great high yield, get the behavioral science or neuroanatomy high yields but NEVER waste your money on this insulting "review" book.BRS biochemistry is excellent alternative if you have the time or the back of lippincotts review(at the very end)I hope this was a helpful advice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good if you need quick quick coverage.
Nicely summed up by the reviewer below. If you need a very quick-and-dirty review, this is good.I take points off due to the lack of index and some weak sections. At this point, QBank leads me to believe that this book may not cover everything I needed to know.. but good for last minute stuff, especially if you hate Biochem like myself. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Okay text, but better medical biochem texts available.
I did my B.S. in Biochemistry and bought this book to improve my medical biochem knowledge. On the plus side this text provides an overview (shows you the forest so to speak) of many major biochemical pathways in a cartoon-like diagrammatic format. However, I agree with the previous reviewers that it's emphasis isn't quite right for medical students. I've found some errors (e.g., fig 11.13 and 25.6 have arrows that are flipped the wrong way & some of the reference ranges in Appendix I have incorrect units) so be careful. My favorite med biochem text is Principles of Medical Biochemistry by Meisenberg/Simmons (ISBN: 0323029426) and the runner-up is Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry (ISBN: 0781769604).

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Book, DON'T WASTE your money
Like other people have said, this book is not worth the money. This book puts far too much emphasis on some topics, ignores others and simply does a terrible job explaining biochemical concepts that are important in medicine. If you would like a simplified biochemistry text, choose Lippencott's or Lange's texts. This is book is too simple and frustrating.I have spoken with many students in my medical school class that agree with my assessment and do no even bother reading the chapters because they leave them confused and frustrated.Save your money!!! I wish I could give it a negative star or no stars at all!

1-0 out of 5 stars Use Lippincott's instead
This is not a very good book.Although this is a medical biochemistry book, this is inadequate for medical school. Many topics are covered in great detail when they don't need to be, while others are neglected when they should be emphasized. In short, it does not teach to the NBME biochemistry shelf exam or USMLE Step 1.Although it is the second edition, it is riddled with errors, unclear grammar, and inaccurate figures. There are also some topics where this book is just plain wrong.Who thought it would be a good idea to have a bunch of biochemists write a medical text?Get something else; anything else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard going
This text was compulsory for our college. As a new student to biochemistry I really struggled with this book.It made easy concepts complicated. If you're planning to do a couple of years of biochem then this is the book for you.If you're after some intro stuff, invest your money into something else.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacking in detail
This book was the required book for my Medical Biochemistry class.Which was quite strange because none of the professors lectured from it, choosing instead Lehninger or Harper's.This book was so lacking in actual biochemistry that it was essentially useless for adequately covering the course material.I will admit that it does a pretty good job of covering clinical correlations, it has a lot of pretty charts, tables, figures, and pictures in multiple colors but it does not cover the material adequately.Do yourself a big favor and go with Lehninger or Harper's instead. ... When I purchased this book, the delivery date was shown to be more than 3 weeks. And I did not recieve the actual tracking number from USPS. I was a little concerned about this. But I recieved the book in 10 days. The books looks brand new. I give a 5 star for this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good resource but the print is tiny
(Paperback) I opened the book and was shocked at how small the font is.Comparing words with the same letters, "electrophoresis" is just about 18 mm in this book; in a biochem text it is 21 mm.Would it have eaten so much into their profit to give us 30 more pages with a decent font?

It's a good book with valuable coverage of important topics, but the reading experience will be torture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really a great book

    Product Description
Functional Biochemistry in Health and Disease provides a clear and straightforward account of the biochemistry that is necessary to understand the physiological functions of tissues or organs essential to the life of human beings. Focusing on the dynamic aspects of biochemistry and its application to the basic functions of the body, the book bridges the gap between biochemistry and medical practice.

Carefully structured within five sections, each biochemical, physiological or medical subject that is covered in the book is presented in one complete chapter. Consequently, each subject can be read and studied in isolation although cross-sectional links between the subjects are included where necessary. Background material, both biochemical and medical, that is necessary for an understanding of the subject, is included at the start of each chapter and clear, relevant diagrams enhance students' understanding.

    • Focuses on medically relevant aspects of biochemistry written from a physiological rather than a chemical perspective.
    • Clear presentation that minimises the use of jargon.
    • Each chapter contains boxes on related topics, relevant diagrams and a brief glossary.
    • Coverage includes athletic performance, apoptosis and the immune system.
    • Key historical developments are included to show how modern biochemistry has evolved.

By linking biochemistry, medical education and clinical practice this book will prove invaluable to students in medical and health sciences, biomedical science and human biology taking an introductory biochemistry course. In addition it will appeal to biochemistry and biology students interested in clinical applications of biochemistry. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Expensive for review
I was amazed at the price for this paperback. It is interesting in content and a pleasant surprise is the inclusion of thermodynamics/kinetics of enzyme substrate interactions.A nice review for anyone who learned the material once and needs a quick reference but not enough detail for a college exam.
Amusingly, I found this book in the JUNIOR section of my public library and the circulation specialist told me it was justified because junior includes up to eighteen years old.I'm still laughing because Biochemistry is an advanced undergraduate course, and the organic chemistry prerequisites for university level is appropriate. The book is useful, but overpriced for a small paperback. It should be no more than $20 new.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Helpful
I did not find this book very helpful at all, and I actually found reading a longer text, such as Voet et al., less time consuming.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
the book itself is good, but the content of the book is not so good.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but harder than the real thing
I used this as a review guide for the Biochem GRE.I'd only taken a one-summer biochem class, so I was feeling weak in that area, although confident about the rest. The book has good organization, and doesn't go too in-depth into one topic at the expense of others.

The biggest problem I had with it was that it was much harder than the real test!I was very worried that I was going to do terribly, and this made me more anxious than I should have been.In the last few days before I took the one real exam that I had, and it was much easier than the book's questions. There were much more biochem pathway trivia in the book than on the real exam.

There are some factual errors in this book, and hopefully future editions will get a little more proofreading.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
I received the product very quickly. It was tough to find a GRE book for the biochemistry subject test because there are few out there. Since there are no biochem test prep books to compare this to, I'd have to give this one a thumbs up for its straight to the point style.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT very professional
I found many typos in this book - the carbon atom has 5 covalent bonds sticking out in the diagram, the math derivation seems not coherent, etc.

I am a little disappointed since the book was written by two PhDs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Will waste your time
I have only read the first five pages and it has obvious critical errors.I will have to abandon it for fear of learning more mis-information.

This book has probably never been edited by a scientist.

    Editorial Review

    Product Description
Nutritional Biochemistry takes a scientific approach to nutrition. It covers not just "whats"--nutritional requirements--but why they are required for human health, by describing their function at the cellular and molecular level. Each case study either leads to a subsequent discovery or enables an understanding of the physiological mechanisms of action of various nutrition-related processes. The text is "picture-oriented" and the commentary is directed towards explaining graphs, figures, and tables.
Nutritional Biochemistry includes a discussion of relevant aspects of physiology, food chemistry, toxicology, pediatrics, and public health. Experimental techniques for nutritional science are emphasized, and primary data is included to help give students a feel for the nutrition literature. This "real-world" approach provides students with a realistic view of the basis for much of our understanding of nutritional biochemistry.

    * Integrates biochemistry and nutrition in a case-oriented method
    * Emphasizes a hands-on approach to learning - case histories and clinical and research data illustrate all major points
    * Places emphasis on metabolism - metabolic pathways, enzymology, nutrient requirements (including RDA values)
    * Reveals the benefits of the Mediterranean diet, the biochemistry of exercise, the cell signaling pathways, how nutrition can influence the development of cancer, and the anthropometry and genetics of obesity. ... Read more

At time of writing, majority of listed reviews are written by the author himself. I would be really interested in this book should the reviews come from some real name readers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wait for the new edition !
While this book on nutritional biochemistry was adequate when it came out in 1999, much has changed in seven years.Without an update of the way daily allowances are now determined, new findings in the area of molecular biology, etc. the potential buyer may be rewarded by waiting for the next edition. It is interesting to note that most of the reviews came from the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a review by Prof. W.R.Bidlack, California State Univ.
The following is from a review by Prof. W.R.Bidlack, Dean of College of Agriculture at California State Polytechnic University (Journal of the American College of Nutrition (2000) Vol. 19:419-420):This well-written text integrates the relationships between nutrients from food and the chemistry of living organisms. The sequential presentation, the figures and tables, the case studies, the appendicies, each contributes to the quality of the work, one valuable for teaching biochemistry, nutrition, medical or health professional students . . . In many cases, the author has included discussion of historically important nutritional deficiencies as well as more contemporary problems that can be controlled wiht appropriate nutritional intervention, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease . . . The layout of the text permits the integration of nutrition into a medical school curriculum. If first establishes biological structure and its relation to genetic expression.Next it presents a very systematic discussion of digestion and absorption . . . The chapter on lipids includes important consideration of phospholipids and sphingosine-based lipids, but emphasizes cholesterol, lipoproteins, and cardiovascular disease . . . Protein . . . is covered in greater detail than by most texts, clearly in an effort to provide good understanding of the concepts, basic and applied. . . Both the vitamins and minerals are presented in standard formats. However, the vitamins are presented in terms of their role in metabolism, rather than simply water soluble and then fat soluble vitamins . . . Throughout the book, the author underscores the importance of nutrient interactions--some positive, some synergistic, and some antagonistic. In addition, major emphasis is placed on interorgan relationships . . . The book can be recommended as a teaching text.It is pleasurable to read . . . There are stimulating exercises in most chapters and a large number of references . . . (From review by Prof. W.R. Bidlack, Dean, College of Agriculture, Calif. State Polytech. Univ. Pomona)

    Editorial Review

    Product Description
The third edition of Concepts in Biochemistry makes the most applied and accessible biochemistry text on the market. Students are more successful with Boyer because it isn't intimidating and it makes clear the relevance of the material to their future careers. Like the first two editions, Boyer is written for students who need an introduction to the fundamental principles of biochemistry and are preparing for a career in the allied health sciences, the biological sciences, and the environmental sciences. (The text is also appropriate for use in one-semester courses developed for chemistry majors as a result of the new American Chemical Society requirements for three-credit hours of biochemistry coursework.)

The modern, student-friendly organization sets the book apart from the competition because the early placement of nucleic acids enhances the traditional coverage of protein structure and function, and metabolism. As an example, it is now possible to present metabolism in a more contemporary fashion, emphasizing gene regulation and integration.

Rod Boyer is a recently retired Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. He has a PhD from Colorado State and recently spent a sabbatical year at Nobel Prize winner Tom Cech's lab at the University of Colorado. He is on the Editorial Board for the journal, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education and has been very active in education affairs for the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook
Chemistry is NOT my favorite subject but this textbook made it easier to understand. My only complaint is that the answers in the back of the book were not always consistent with the answers that my instructor wanted ie..the # of sig figs or the use of the same conversion factors. Most of these concerns were alleviated with the solutions manual because at least then I could see how the answer was gotten as opposed to just having the answer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money, buy a Timberlake chemistry book instead
This textbook consistently buries important information in very wordy text.If you've taken an introductory chemistry course before and were hoping to scan the chapters to refresh your memory while doing homework or studying -- this is NOT the book for you.

Homework questions are at the end of each chapter, and frequently are more conceptual than stoichiometry type questions.Although I am not a fan of math, the stoichiometry questions are crucial to master now if you will be taking any pharmacology courses in the future (think R.N. programs).

If you have the option, buy Karen Timberlake's General, Organic and Biological Chemistry textbook instead.Apparently, that is what my school's chemistry department will be switching to next year; I recently purchased it and I wish I had bought it much sooner.

This best-selling undergraduate textbook provides an introduction to key experimental techniques from across the biosciences. It uniquely integrates the theories and practices that drive the fields of biology and medicine, comprehensively covering both the methods students will encounter in lab classes and those that underpin recent advances and discoveries. Its problem-solving approach continues with worked examples that set a challenge and then show students how the challenge is met. New to this edition are case studies, for example, that illustrate the relevance of the principles and techniques to the diagnosis and treatment of individual patients. Coverage is expanded to include a section on stem cells, chapters on immunochemical techniques and spectroscopy techniques, and additional chapters on drug discovery and development, and clinical biochemistry. Experimental design and the statistical analysis of data are emphasised throughout to ensure students are equipped to successfully plan their own experiments and examine the results obtained. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review
This is a very good review on the main techniques of biochemistry and molecular biology. Excellent for filling up those gaps that bad teachers left behind.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tons of Info
It was more than I needed or could use. I tried to contact the seller to see if I could return it, but got no response.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok as an intro, but rather irksome
I had purchased this book as part of the required books for a molecular biology techniques class in college. While I did skim through most of it at that time, I hadn't given it my full attention.

Two years later, I've sat down and read the entire book (spare 2 chapters). My reason for doing this was to brush up on what I (hopefully) already knew, expand on my knowledge, and to catch some things I'd surely completely missed.

I do not like how the chapters are written by different authors.I suppose it makes sense in light of certain folks being experts in their respective fields... but isn't this book an intro book?Shouldn't the stuff in this book be "the basics"?I noticed that the style of writing (somewhat organization of thoughts, but mostly the tone/way of talking) varied.I also found more than one topic to be repeated in detail.Oh no, not just "refer to section ___ for more info"... nope... totally repeated.

I hate the organization of the book.I feel like the chapters are out of order. The chapters also, I feel, could have been focused differently to better tackle material.

Also, while a great deal of theory is helpful, I sure wished I'd seen some basic info included for actual benchwork.I wanted to see more of typical concentrations, troubleshooting, controls, etc.Because now I just look at this book and think, hmm... the info in that book I can get for free on the internet, probably faster and more detailed.I don't want to lug that thing around to work, etc.No way.Good for class though, I suppose. At least at the end of each chapter there is a recommendations section for further reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best lab books available
I was blown away by this book. That's how good it is.

I'm a microbiology grad student working on my Ph.D. and I have referred to this book on multiple occasions. It covers almost every single type of procedure that a student would do in a life science or biochemistry laboratory. From molecular biology to PCR; from Southern blots to western blots; from electrophoresis to mass spectrometry; from cell culture to microscopy.....this book literally covers it all.Additionally, it covers all of these topics in pretty good detail. Each procedure is not only discussed in terms of how to do it, but also why it works.

Fantastic.Every life science, biochemistry, or health science student should have this as a reference book.
