4-0 out of 5 stars At last, a lab textbook on electrochemistry, or almost...
It's almost impossible to find a laboratory textbook in electrochemistry written after 1920, and since then so many things have changed you might need an emeritus chemist to traslate it for you (that's why I start by giving this book PLUS TWO STARS).
Also, for general chemistry electrochemical experiments are pretty easy to find, but that's not the case with other basic courses like organic, inorganic and physical chemistry.
In the case of physical chemistry Shoemaker (Experiments in Physical Chemistry), Matthews (Experimental Physical Chemistry) and Athawale (Experimental Physical Chemistry) include some classical nice experiments, but they're just not enough and most of them emphasize the basic science aspects alone.

In this book Holze manages to squeeze laboratory experiments for elementary, basic and intermediate (PLUS ONE STAR) electrochemistry, electroanalysis and electrosynthesis (PLUS TWO STARS) and in some of them also includes the applied science aspect of the experiment like corrosion and batteries (PLUS ONE STAR). You should really take a look at the table of contents.

The MINUS ONE STAR comes from the book's lack of equipment diagrams and detailed instructions. It's more a guide for the instructors than a real laboratory textbook. Also, the book leaves behind all the possibilities of amalgam electrodes (and yes, the environmental issue can be a problem if your ignorance ocludes you from keeping them in good conditions) and some other do-it-yourself systems (MINUS ONE STAR).

NOTE: You will probably need to complement this book with Sawyer's (Electrochemistry for Chemists), and in the case you're interested in amalgams you can look in any old preparative inorganic chemistry book like Brauer's (Handbook of Preparative Inorganic Chemistry, Volume 1 and 2, Complete 2 Volume Set). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lucidity, Honesty and Fluidity!
Remarkable book. I admire how the authors explain the analogy between gravitaional potential, electrostatic potential and chemical potential in the context of a solute-solvent in an electrochemical system. I beleive that a clarity of understanding can be achieved only by (listening to someone having) a clarity of expression that comes from (that person who has the) clarity of thought. The authors have striven to present electrochemical aspects, as they state, in lucid and honest manner. I think they can also claim, "fluid" (I mean flow, not less-concrete stuff) in their accomplishment because the text flows so well and it is a very readable book. I have no doubt the authors have been inspired by Feynman's Lectures of Physics.

5-0 out of 5 stars ExcellentBook on Electrochemistry
An excellent book on ionics in electrochemistry. Bockris and Reddyare great authoritiesonelectrochmistryandhave handledall the topics covered in this book very lucidly and superbly. A must reading for all electrochemists and others who are working in this area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Electrochemistry Series!
These authors have a great writing style. This is a subject matter that has a potential to be very, very dry but the authors have somehow made it enjoyable. If they get into hardcore calculations and derivations that you might be a little rusty on, they anticipate that (I assume from lots of students' feedback) and include appendixes at the end of each chapter so that you don't need to run off and find the corresponding chapter in one of your math/physics/chemistry textbooks. They also have a very useful nomenclature guide (in the first book only) in case you keep forgetting what certain symbols mean and what units they are in. The footnotes are great and keep things from getting too dry. Overall, I would definitely recommend these three books.

Note: Unless you have a fetish for hard covers, get the paperbacks; they're half the cost. When I bought these books from amazon.com, it was very confusing to figure out which books to get. Here are the ISBN's of each of the three books in the series. This will save you some headache:

Electrochemistry 1: Ionics
ISBN: 0306455552 (paperback)

Electrochemistry 2A: Fundamentals of Electrodics
ISBN: 0306461676 (paperback)

Electrochemistry 2B: Electrodics in Chemistry, Engineering, Biology, and Environmental Science
ISBN: 0306463253 (paperback)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text and reference
The Modern Electrochemistry volumes are truly excellent textbooks and references for all aspects of electrochemistry.
Whether you're dealing with corrosion, electrolytic processes, batteries, or biochemistry, the electrochemistry is fully explained here. The authors go into a great deal of detail topics while maintaining a very familiar, easy-to-read tone. There are also plenty of interesting historical footnotes which serve to lighten the text.

These books are written for electrochemists interested in the chemical mechanisms behind electrochemical processes.Applications of these processes are treated very briefly. If you are more interested in real-world applications of these processes, other texts may serve you better.

The text comes in three volumes, which is problematic. It is difficult to find all three at most booksellers. Many online booksellers (including Amazon) don't distinguish between the volumes in their catalogs; I had to go by ISBN numbers to ensure I got the complete set.But it was well worth the trouble.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bible of Electrochemistry Education

The difference of this second Ed. from the first one is huge; the author actually rewrote ca. 50% of the first volume (Ionics) and ca. 70% of the second volume (Electrodics, still in writing), covering literature upto later 90's.

For classroom use, the most important addition of theedition is the problem set, which are extremely helpfulfor students on introductory level.

It was a great honor of me to beinvited by the author to write part of the problem sets for all chapters inVol.1 and a few chapters in Vol.2, and I can tell you that the author andthe problem writers put in a lot of effort to elucidate the fundamentalelectrochemistry while also help original thinkings of the students on moreadvanced electrochemistry issues. ... Like its predecessor, thenew text presents the electrochemistry of solutions at the molecularlevel. The Second Edition takes full advantage of the advances inmicroscopy, computing power, and industrial applications in thequarter century since the publication of the First Edition. A description of the electrochemical stage - the high fieldregion near the interface - is the topic of Chapter 6 andinvolves a complete rewrite of the corresponding chapter in the FirstEdition, particularly the various happenings which occur with organicmolecules which approach surfaces in solution. The chapter onelectrode kinetics retains material describing the Butler-Volmerequation from the First Edition, but then turns to many new areas, including electrochemical theories of potential-dependent gascatalysis. Chapter 8 is a new one devoted to explaining howelectrochemists deal with the fast-changing nature of the electrodesurface. Quantum Mechanics as the basis to electrode kinetics is givenan entirely new look - up to and including considerations ofbond-breaking reactions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Electrochemistry at its best
First things first: this book, as the other two books in the series, are about electochemistry, not analytical electrochemistry. That is, in this volume in particular, the fundamental aspects of electrode reactions (that is heterogeneous electron transfer) are covered.
This is not a book on electroanalytical techniques.

The aspects regarding the motion of ions and molecules in solution (diffusion, migration...) are not covered (they are thoroughly explained in the first volume: Modern electrochemistry 1: Ionics) and are frequently referenced to, so i'd suggest you get some understanding of how they work before you venture into this book.

Now let's get to volume 2A: i love this book.It is written in an extremely clear and concise style. The authors are very careful always to present the phenomena they're describing both with an inutive and with a more mathematical approach, while never losing touch with the physics behind them.
The topics covered range from double-layer structure, to electrodics (kinetics including multi-step reactions, transpost phenomena, crystal structure influence on kinetics) and an introduction to quantum electrodics.
At the end of each chapter is also a very useful list of papers that dig deeper into the topics presented. Basicly everything one can wish to find in a textbook.

I cannot but encourage one to get all of the 3 books in the series (paperback, the hardcovers have a rather silly price...).

Product Description

The book shows how to numerically solve the parabolic partial differential equations (pdes) encountered in electroanalytical chemistry. It does this in a didactic manner, by first introducing the basic equations to be solved and some model systems as text cases, for which solutions exist. Then it treats basic numerical approximation for derivatives and techniques for the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations, from which the more complicated methods for pdes can be derived. The major implicit methods are described in detail, and the handling of homogeneous chemical reactions, including coupled and nonlinear cases, is detailed. More advanced techniques are presented briefly, as well as some commercially available program packages.

This third edition, still the only text on the subject, is structured more didactically than the previous editions. It brings the coverage of electrochemical digital simulation up to date, including many new techniques developed since the early 1990s. A number of example procedures and programs are made available as supplementary material in the online version of this book.

Product Description
Electrochemistry is an old branch of physical chemistry. Due to the development of surface sensitive techniques, and a technological interest in fuel cells and batteries, it has recently undergone a rapid development. This textbook treats the field from a modern, atomistic point of view while integrating the older, macroscopic concepts. The increasing role of theory is reflected in the presentation of the basic ideas in a way that should appeal to experimentalists and theorists alike. Special care is taken to make the subject comprehensible to scientists from neighboring disciplines, especially from surface science. The book is suitable for an advanced course at the master or Ph.D. level, but should also be useful for practicing electrochemists, as well as to any scientist who wants to understand modern electrochemistry. ... Product Description

Porous materials continue to attract considerable attention because of their wide variety of scientific and technological applications, such as catalysis, shape- and size-selective absorption and adsorption, gas storage, and electrode materials. Both research and applications of porous materials—via electroanalysis, electrosynthesis, sensing, fuel cells, capacitors, electro-optical devices, etc.—heavily rely on electrochemistry.

Electrochemistry of Porous Materials focuses on generalized theoretical modeling and describes redox processes for different porous materials, assessing their electrochemical applications. Considering the large variety of materials that can be classified as porous, the text focuses on nanostructured micro- and mesoporous materials. Using this approach, the book offers a more focused and practical analysis of key porous materials that are considered relatively homogeneous from an electrochemical point of view. These include:

  • Porous silicates and aluminosilicates
  • Porous metal oxides and related compounds
  • Porous polyoxometalates
  • Metal-organic frameworks
  • Porous carbons, nanotubes, and fullerenes
  • Porous polymers and certain hybrid materials

With its detailed presentation of advances in electrochemistry of nanostructured materials, this text specifically addresses the foundation and applications of the electrochemistry of microporous materials. It incorporates the latest breakthroughs in applied fields (development of fuel cells, supercapacitors, etc.) and fundamental research (in areas including fractal scaling, photoelectrocatalysis, magnetoelectrochemistry, etc.).

Designed to make the topic accessible and understandable for researchers and graduate students working in the field of material chemistry, this volume approximates porous materials chemistry to electrochemists. Selective and streamlined, it culls a wide range of relevant and practically useful material from the extensive literature on the subject, making it an invaluable reference for readers of all levels of understanding.

The authors do a good job introducing the concepts of electrochemistry in a fairly readable and thorough manner. The individual chapters can be read more or less independently with minimal flipping back to earlier material for reference. The subject mater is handled at a level appropriate for an intermediate level student or for one not exceedingly familiar with electrochemistry.Exercises and problems are infrequent so this may not be a good stand alone text for an upper division class although I found the emphasis on conceptual understanding very valuable. In all a very good text.

Electrochemistry 2A: Fundamentals of Electrodics

Product Description
Electrochemistry and Corrosion Science is a graduate level text/professional reference that describes the types of corrosion on metallic materials. The focus will be on modeling and engineering approximation schemes that describe the thermodynamics and kinetics of electrochemical systems. The principles of corrosion behavior and metal recovery are succinctly described with the aid of pictures, figures, graphs and schematic models, followed by derivation of equations to quantify relevant parameters. Example problems are included to illustrate the application of electrochemical concepts and mathematics for solving complex corrosion problems.
This book differs from others in that the subject matter is organized around the modeling and predicating approaches that are used to determine detrimental and beneficial electrochemical events. Thus, this book will take a more practical approach and make it especially useful as a basic text and reference for professional engineers. ... Read more
