Product Description
The principal researchers from East and West present thechemistry, electrochemistry and technology of refractory metals inmolten salts, in particular the electrochemical deposition of thesemetals from molten salt solutions. The book covers all fields ofrefractory metals technology, from basic considerations -thermodynamics, structural aspects, chemical and electrode reactions- to the applied areas of electrodeposition, surface alloying, electrowinning, powder production, etc.
Many modern techniques are applied, often in parallel, to theinvestigation of the chemical and electrochemical behaviour of therefractory metals, both in model systems and in the complex halide andoxyhalide melts used in practice.
The goal of producing new, high performance materials is oftenapproached via a study of the mechanisms of synthesis, the effect onmaterial properties of changing operating parameters, etc. ... Read more

Product Description

A comprehensive survey of theoretical andexperimental concepts in fuel cell chemistry

Fuel cell science is undergoing significant development, thanks, in part, to a spectacular evolution of the electrocatalysis concepts, and both new theoretical and experimental methods. Responding to the need for a definitive guide to the field, Fuel Cell Science provides an up-to-date, comprehensive compendium of both theoretical and experimental aspects of the field.

Designed to inspire scientists to think about the future of fuel cell technology, Fuel Cell Science addresses the emerging field of bio-electrocatalysis and the theory of heterogeneous reactions in fuel cell science and proposes potential applications for electrochemical energy production. The book is thorough in its coverage of the electron transfer process and structure of the electric double layer, as well as the development of operando measurements. Among other subjects, chapters describe:

  • Recently developed strategies for the design, preparation, and characterization of catalytic materials for fuel cell electrodes, especially for new fuel cell cathodes

  • A wide spectrum of theoretical and computational methods, with?the aim of?developing?new fuel cell catalysis concepts and improving existing designs to increase their performance.?

Edited by two leading faculty, the book:

  • Addresses the emerging fields of bio-electrocatalysis for fuel cells and theory of heterogeneous reactions for use in fuel cell catalysis

  • Provides a survey of experimental and theoretical concepts in these new fields

  • Shows the evolution of electrocatalysis concepts

  • Describes the chemical physics of fuel cell reactions

  • Forecasts future developments in electrochemical energy production and conversion

Written for electrochemists and electrochemistry graduate students, electrocatalysis researchers, surface and physical chemists, chemical engineers, automotive engineers, and fuel cell and energy-related researchers, this modern compendium can help today's best minds meet the challenges in fuel science technology. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Electrochemisty at Metal and Semiconductor Electrodes covers the structure of the electrical double layer and charge transfer reactions across the electrode/electrolyte interface. The purpose of the book is to integrate modern electrochemistry and semiconductor physics, thereby, providing a quantitative basis for understanding electrochemistry at metal and semiconductor electrodes.

Electrons and ions are the principal particles which play the main role in electrochemistry. This text, therefore, emphasizes the energy level concepts of electrons and ions rather than the phenomenological thermodynamic and kinetic concepts on which most of the classical electrochemistry texts are based. This rationalization of the phenomenological concepts in terms of the physics of semiconductors should enable readers to develop more atomistic and quantitative insights into processes that occur at electrodes.

The book incorporates many traditional disciplines of science and engineering such as interfacial chemistry, biochemistry, enzyme chemistry, membrane chemistry, metallurgy, modification of solid interfaces, and materials' corrosion. The text is intended to serve as an introduction for the study of advanced electrochemistry at electrodes and is aimed towards graduates and senior undergraduates studying materials and interfacial chemistry or those beginning research work in the field of electrochemistry.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book needs an editor; its readers need patience.
For a science text of this type, Sato's book is unusually difficult to read. Its awkward, imprecise, often ambiguous wording is distracting--I find myself asking, "What does he mean?" more often than I ask, "How does that science work out?" That said, the book is reasonably thorough (covering precisely what the title says it does) and a patient reader (fresh graduate student or ripe undergraduate) might learn a thing or two. There are no problems (or solutions). The figures are poor. ... Read more
