5-0 out of 5 stars suitable for geochemists dealing with nano particles
It was great to find this before I start nanoscience as a geochemist.
We can learn everything about collidal particles of our interest, from basics to the latest analytical methods. This is extremely useful for beginners.
Also, this book is full of critical reviews with many useful references. We can deepen our understanding from them.
Finally, we can learn about particles other than our major interest. It is better to know something about inorganic particles, even though you are studying organic particles, and vice versa.
This book has helped me a lot in only a few weeks since I started reading it. ... Read more

Product Description
Monitoring pollutants in air, soil and water is a routine requirement in the workplace, and in the wider environment. Passive samplers can provide arepresentative picture of levels of pollutants over a period of time from days to months by measuring the average concentrations to which they have been exposed.Air monitors are widely used, for instance to measure the exposure of workers to volatile compounds, but also for monitoring the fate of pollutants in the atmosphere. Passive sampling devices are now becomining increasingly used to monitor pollutants in rivers, coastal waters and ground water where contamination results from sources such asdomestic and industrial discharges, and the use of agrochemicals.
Passive Sampling Techniques in Environmental Monitoring provides a timely collection of information on a set of techniques that help monitor the quality of air, surface and ground waters.Passive sampling can provide an inexpensive means of obtaining a representative picture of quality over a period of time, even where levels of pollutants fluctuate due to discontinuous discharges or seasonal application of chemicals such as pesticides. Recent changes in legislation have increased the pressure to obtain better information than that provided by classical infrequent spot sampling.
Brought together in one source, this book looks at the performance of a range of devices for the passive sampling of metals, and of non-polar and polar organic chemicals in air and in water. The strengths and weaknesses and the range of applicability of the technology are considered.

* Comprehensive review of passive sampling - covering air, water and majority of available technologies in one volume
* Chapters written by international specialistexperts
* Covers theory and applications, providingbackground information and guidelines for use in the field ... Read more

43. Quality Assurance for Chemistry and Environmental Science: Metrology from pH Measurement to Nuclear Waste Disposal

Product Description

Metrological concepts like traceability or measurement uncertainty form important parts of international treaties and normative documents. Their applications e.g. in chemical or food analysis or in environmental monitoring are entering our daily life. The development of those concepts has been driven by demand on a world-wide scale from trade, industry and the legal systems. In the future, no chemist, geochemist, chemical , civil or environmental engineer and no other specialist dealing with chemical measurement data, and no decision maker, neither in trade and industry, in public or medical services, in the political and diplomatic arenas or in academic research can afford not to become acquainted with metrology, its concepts and impact.

This book provides a basic overview over the relevant metrological concepts like traceability, ISO uncertainties or cause-and-effect diagrams. The applications described in great detail range from progression-of-error type evaluation of the measurement uncertainty budget to complex applications like pH measurement or speciation calculations for aqueous solutions. The consequences of a measurement uncertainty concept for chemical data are outlined for geochemical modeling applied to transport in the subsurface and to nuclear waste disposal. Special sections deal with the deficits of existing thermodynamic data for these applications and with the current position of chemical metrology in respect to other quality assurance measures, e.g. ISO 900x, GLP, European and U.S.-American standards. The CD-ROM accompanying the book provides two illustrative programmes (for IBM PCs and derivatives; with manuals and example data sets) and important official documents and guides in PDF format.

Product Description

Elizabeth Grossman, an acclaimed journalist who brought national attention to the contaminants hidden in computers and other high tech electronics, now tackles the hazards of ordinary consumer products. She shows that for the sake of convenience, efficiency, and short-term safety, we have created synthetic chemicals that fundamentally change, at a molecular level, the way our bodies work. The consequences range from diabetes to cancer, reproductive and neurological disorders.

Yet it’s hard to imagine life without the creature comforts current materials provide—and Grossman argues we do not have to. A scientific revolution is introducing products that are “benign by design,” developing manufacturing processes that consider health impacts at every stage, and is creating new compounds that mimic rather than disrupt natural systems. Through interviews with leading researchers, Grossman gives us a first look at this radical transformation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Chasing Molecules: Poisonous Products, Human Health, and the Promise of Green Chemistry
This book is obviously written by a person with no qualification about an important subject that is central to our modern society. The author tried to expose the problems with many of the chemicals used in our daily lives, including BPA, phthalates, Teflon, nano-material, etc.Unfortunately, most of the the material in this book are old, extremely superfacial and poorly organized. The last chapter "Toward a Greening of Chemistry" cited extensively the research work of one professor, whom, I suspect, maybe the only person the author spoke to.As a result, the book missed the large amount of real progress in sustainable and beneficial green chemistry. Most unfortunately, the author took up a very early academic study, poly-thymine, as a likely next generation material, simply because thymine is a natural-occuring material, present in all living cell, and talked up by this one professor. This "advocacy" approach easily lead the public into a dangerous path. The author used cosmetics as an example for our daily use of unsafe chemicals, and promoted the use of alternative chemicals in cosmetics. She sourly missed an opportunity to educate the reader for the advantage of reduction and elimination of cosmetics. What a sad loss of opportunity. The writing is tortuous with many extraneous personal tibits. The book, with more than 200 pages, added nothing new, nothing educational and nothing insightful. Skip it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pseudo science at its best
Reading the book an organic synthetic chemistry student, it is nonsensical. She seems to make an artificial distinction between green chemicals and poisonous chemicals. An absolutely ignorant pov. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars amazing references terrible index
The huge number of references in this text is mind boggling but the index is HORRIBLE!!The worst index I have ever seen in a textbook.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only book on the market
Unfortunately, there aren't really any other atmospheric textbooks out there that covers the vast amount of material which this text covers. The greatest flaw in this book is that it has got to have one of the worst index i have ever seen! It is very difficult searching for certain topics in the book. So unless you are not ready to create your own index for this book, you shouldn't buy the book. Other than that it is a pretty informative book.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Horizons
The scope and technical detail of this seminal work covering the cutting edge in Atmospheric chemistry is beyond remarkable. Just the number of references is mind boggling. The book presents the material in a veryreadable and understandable style. The authors have kept the reader inmind. Basic Concepts of Environmental Chemistry, Second Edition provides a theoretical basis for the behavior and biological effects of natural chemical entities and contaminants in natural systems, concluding with a practical focus on risk assessment and the environmental management of chemicals.

The text uses molecular properties such as polarity, water solubility, and vapor pressure as the starting point for understanding the environmental chemistry of various contaminants in soil, water, and the atmosphere. It explains biological processes such as respiration and photosynthesis and their relationship to greenhouse gases. The book then introduces environmental toxicology and describes the distribution, transport, and transformation of contaminants, including PCBs and dioxins, plastics, petroleum and aromatic hydrocarbons, soaps and detergents, and pesticides. The author highlights the relationship between specific chemical properties and their environmental and biological effects. Other topics discussed include partition behavior, fugacity, and genotoxicity, particularly involving carcinogens.

The second edition updates the contents and incorporates the latest advances in the field since the 1997 edition was published. It presents an entirely new chapter on metals, which underlines the correlation between metallic properties and their behavior in the environment, as well as new sections on radionuclides and acid drainage water. The chapter on atmospheric chemistry and pollution has been substantially expanded including photochemical smog, the Greenhouse Effect, and pollution processes in the atmosphere and acid rain. The author also adds recent approaches to ecotoxicology, ecological, and human risk assessments to include the probabilistic approach.

Product Description

In the nearly 10 years since the publication of the bestselling first edition of Introduction to Green Chemistry, interest in green chemistry and clean processes has grown so much that topics, such as fluorous biphasic catalysis, metal organic frameworks, and process intensification, barely mentioned in the first edition, have become major areas of research. In addition, government funding has ramped up the development of fuel cells and biofuels. It reflects the evolving focus from pollution remediation to pollution prevention. Copiously illustrated with over 800 figures, this second edition provides an update from the frontiers of the field.

New and expanded research topics:

  • Metal-organic frameworks
  • Solid acids for alkylation of isobutene by butanes
  • Carbon molecular sieves
  • Mixed micro- and mesoporous solids
  • Organocatalysis
  • Process intensification and gas phase enzymatic reactions
  • Hydrogen storage for fuel cells
  • Reactive distillation
  • Catalysts in action on an atomic scale

Updated and expanded current events topics:

  • Industry resistance to inherently safer chemistry
  • Nuclear power
  • Removal of mercury from vaccines
  • Removal of mercury and lead from primary explosives
  • Biofuels
  • Uses for surplus glycerol
  • New hard materials to reduce wear

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great by all accounts!
This is a most unusual book!It is actually a monograph that is perfectly readable and is most interesting.I do not believe that the title "Introduction to Green Chemistry" does justice to this book, which is so much more! The author has succeeded in combining the exploration of various chemical reactions with the industrial processes by which they are produced, in a way which is above and beyond the ordinary. As a non-industrial chemist I usually have little interest in the industrial processes. For the first time, I find them fascinating, as they are shown in the context of actual reactions, which is what I am normally interested in, and are coupled with the challenge of the green chemistry design.I have explored in depth selected chapters, on the material which is of interest to me and in which I have a reasonable expertise. I have discovered many new key references, which were not just cited, but were critically reviewed and incorporated into the text in a meaningful manner.
While CRC books are normally quite expensive, the price of this one is more than reasonable. Also, the CRC monographs are well known and are used heavily, but usually one depends on the library copies. The reason is that the monographs are typically not very readable and that one usually needs to consults only a small section. In a sharp contrast, Matlack's book is very readable and one wants to read his book further!I consider it a real gem and recommend it most highly!

Product Description
The study of the environment requires the reliable and accurate measurement of extremely small quantities of chemicals and the ability to determine if they are pollutants or naturally occurring species. Historically, a "dilute and disperse" method of waste disposal has been accepted; yet as we learn the long-term consequences of such an approach, it is clear that more rigorous waste management techniques are necessary to understand the sources and fates of contaminants and to regulate their discharge.

This volume presents the details of the basic analytical science involved in making these measurements. It concentrates on the basic principles of sampling and sample preparation, followed by the chemical principles of the major instrumental methods used in chemical analysis, and detailed discussions of the major environmental matrices. This book also provides coverage of topics usually only partially discussed in textbooks, such as quality assurance plans and statistical data handling.

Students majoring in environmental sciences need a foundation in measurement techniques used in the field. Environmental Chemical Analysis gives students a thorough grounding in this field and enough information to judge the quality and interpret the information produced in the analytical laboratory. ...
