3-0 out of 5 stars Boring science text and even worse online version from WileyPLUS
If you must get this text because it is required - I recommend you get an old version and buy the most inexpensive copy. It is a horrible resource with outdated stuffy examples. I guess it's just a typical science text book. The WileyPLUS online supplement is so bad! That's what prompted me to write the review. You can't even do something as basic as search the text- even a PDF format will allow you to do that. It is basically like reading a grouping of screen shots that make up the online text. It is so budget I can't believe Wiley dare's charge for it. No matter what, DON'T pay the extra cash to get the WileyPLUS online edition it is a rip off and dreadful user experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Wiley Plus
Don't waste your time with this book on Amazon if your class requires Wiley Plus. You will spend an additional 100 dollars buying the online access, which brings the total for this book to almost $260.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Text
This is the most comprehensive textbook on Organic Chemistry on the Market. It uses terminology that is suitable for its audience, assuming that those who would take organic chemistry have are at least partially intelligent. The book has excellent content and serves as a great tool for the aspiring chemist, or even the "I am just taking this to get my Med Degree" people. If you need "Wiley Plus" then you should do some research on who you buy from, as some books do not come with it.

1-0 out of 5 stars WARNING
This version of the text does not include the online supplement to the text (WileyPlus), as does other versions that can be purchased at university bookstores. I purchased the textbook in order to get a head start with my course work in organic chemistry over the summer. The price of the text with WileyPlus at my university bookstore is $5 less then the version Amazon sells without WileyPlus. I was very discouraged when I received my copy of the text from Amazon and found this to be the case. I contacted the publisher (Wiley), explained my situation, and I asked if they would help me. They said, "no" because, as their technology team leader put it, "I could generate a code for you, but I won't because giving out free codes isn't part of our business model." So much for corporate responsibility and helping students succeed academically. I think Wiley just wanted me to pay the outrageous $80 fee for a WileyPlus subscription in addition to the $160 I had already spent on their textbook. In the end I had to ship the book back to Amazon and order another copy of the book through the university bookstore. This was a waist of time that could have been better spent studying organic chemistry with my new textbook. My recommendation is that you should be careful about who you buy this textbook from; make sure your getting the most for your money. ... Read more

Product Description
Organic Chemistry helps students understand the structure of organic molecules by helping them understand the how and why of organic chemistry.Organic Chemistry, Fourth Edition, was written to students by two expert teachers, with an emphasis on understanding, not memorization. The authors employ a conversational writing style that is instructive and interesting to read.

Jones and Fleming take the time to not only explain the basics but also coach students through the tough parts of the subject. They do this by pointing out common mistakes that students make and providing expert advice on solving problems.

Whether a student reads the book from beginning to end, or uses the text as a reference, the authors have developed innovative pedagogy to meet their needs, and an art and media program to help students visualize each process. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor, get this book
Even though we had weekly help sessions for our Orgo homework, this solutions guide helped me significantly. If I was in the session, I could follow along with the solution guide (as our TA's were less than stellar). If I missed the session, I could use the guide to help me through the problems.I am Orgo-incompetent and managed a decent grade by relying on this book. All the problems in the text are explained in here, making it a useful study tool come exam time.Save yourself hours of trouble, get this solutions guide.

Pros:
-All problems from text worked in guide
-Explains solution in great detail, referencing to book for additional info

Cons:
-Orgo sucks

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Seller
The book arrived very quickly and it was brand new.GREAT savings over the college bookstore price.Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the better books i've gone through
I'd rather use this book to review for the MCAT and PCAT rather than Kaplan and Princeton, etc. This is very simple, although full of tangents and history, which I don't like. And colors!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Organic Chemistry Book
I am a student at Rice University. I'm establishing that I have actually cracked open this book unlike some of the glowing positive reviews of this textbook probably seeded by the publishers of this book. To those who think this book is great: you're doing society a disservice by attempting to teach organic chemistry without synthesis. The students who have read this book will emerge ignorant of the importance of synthesis.

I have read four undergraduate organic chemistry textbooks: Vollhardt; Wade; Browne, Foote, Iverson; and Jones. Jones is the worst by far. There is no justification for his approach. Organic chemistry is about reactions and synthesis. This book doesn't get into reactions until page 134. Chirality is mentioned extremely late in the book while thermodynamics is mainly set aside as a nuisance rather than an explanation. Sterics and electronic factors have paltry coverage. Moreover, important to synthetic organic chemists is the determination of products. NMR is central to these ends. NMR isn't covered until Chapter 15.

If I were to ask Maitland Jones one question, I would ask why he wrote this book. This book cannot be used as a reference with its inexact tables, useless anecdotes, and digressions that go nowhere. You don't learn organic chemistry. You learn about structures and molecular orbitals. Honestly, if one introduces the formation of a Grignard reagent in Chapter 6 and ignores its usefulness in synthesis until page 859 about 10 chapters later, there is something terribly wrong.

The explanations are awful. Whie Jones simply omits the reasons why additions to aromatic systems occur at the para, meta, and ortho positions, Vollhardt and Wade give a succinct and simple process for determining placement of directors, replete with information. Finally, there are very few problems, not to mention the relegation of synthesis to about 2 pages in the back of every chapter. Use Vollhardt or Wade. They are far superior.

Product Description
The Ninth Edition of Organic Chemistry continues Solomons-Fryhle's tradition of excellence in teaching and preparing students for success in the organic classroom and beyond.

Students are often overwhelmed by the early rigors of organic chemistry. Solomons-Fryhle prepares students for these early rigors by introducing acids & bases--topics they know from general chemistry--early, followed by chapters on structure and stereochemistry. Next, a discussion of ionic reactions gives students a foundation for the vast majority of reactions that they will encounter. The Ninth Edition continues to introduce IR spectroscopy in chapter 2 (after functional groups) and Carbon-13 NMR spectroscopy in chapter 4, providing synergy with most lab courses and, again, reinforcing learning.

The new edition of Solomons-Fryhle also has a completely revised WileyPLUS course to help students and instructors reach their full potential. WileyPLUS provides instructors with the most robust online homework solution in organic chemistry. This revision of WileyPLUS meets students where and when they learn and provides them with a learning platform that offers real learning solutions that complement their approach to managing and mastering organic concepts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT TOOL
This book is great to have while reading the text book for studying. There are small study check questions as you read through the chapters, and you can check your knowledge right away with this study guide. This allows you to instantly know if there is something you don't understand before you continue reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars WTF?
I ordered a book, cause the picture shows a book, but in very tiny print it says its just a CD. Why pay that much for just a CD. My fault for not reading i guess. Buy the actual book guys.

5-0 out of 5 stars Necessary to go with text book
This book includes all of the solutions in depth. It is necessary to buy it if you want to learn organic chemistry from the Solomons 9e textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Could something be TOO Helpful?
This solutions manuel is a great studying tool. I recommend buying it just to check the work that you've done.

3-0 out of 5 stars Essential in a manipulative way...
This is the study guide companion to the text (which I am finding quite good). It is essential to work the book to develop the foundation of concepts necessary for this course. However, many chemistry texts offer solutions for at least even or odd numbered problems in the back of the textbook, then offer a reasonably priced study guide that works the problemsmore fully. The Solomons et al text gives absolutely no answers so you are forced to buy this study guide - which is extremely pricey - in order to really get any value out of the text. I actually need to learn this subject and even on Amazon the duo cost me $200. At this price, I would have liked more thoroughness on some of the worked solutions. Some you get, some you don't. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It was OK.
I wish this book was easier to read. The colors are great, but explanations could be better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware of Lying Reviewers!
Beware of the so-called reviews on all Examkrackers books. While the textbook publishers are not smart enough to understand MCAT science, they are smart enough to have their employees come on here and copy and paste glowing reviews about their products. It is a shame that the company will play with people's futures in order to make a buck.

I can also say that I tried out McGraw Hill's MCAT review book and it was also garbage. It does a poor job of summarizing, especially in organic chemistry, and does not even tell you what material is or is not on the test! Go for Princeton Review or Kaplan.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best I've used
I've used Kaplan, Princeton review, and many others - I think Exam Krackers does the best at highlighting and explaining the important concepts. The others will overwhelm you with unnecessary detail, and I didn't like the way they were set up. Using exam krackers, my score jumped 7 points.

Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Necessary for Doing Well in Orgo
Every orgo teacher is different (obviously), but without question, all orgo students need to make this a staple in their studying library. It offers more questions than most generic orgo textbooks that help you beat the concept into your head. Also, it offers helpful explanations and step-by-step processes for a lot of confusing questions. Spend the money!

2-0 out of 5 stars Check It Out From Your Library

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a very easy to read book. If you have already taken organic chemistry it may be a bit of a review but it does apply the information to biological pathways. If you have not already taken organic chemistry, it is a great book to learn it. I think that it is easier, yet just as comprehensive as other textbooks out there, but it skips over things that are more useful in physical organic chemistry (energy equations and things like that). We are using it in our biochemistry class and it's a great review that gets to the point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn more about biosynthesis of primary and secondary metabolites
This book is simply great. The scholar and very clear presentation by the authors make the subject of each chapter almost self-explanatory. The first two chapters introduce the organic reactions which are relevant in biosynthesis, stereochemistry of biological molecules and the major classes of primary metabolites. In the following chapters the authors discuss, with care and in detail, the biosynthesis of every class of primary metabolite, showing mechanisms for every single reaction. The last chapter on biosynthesis presents examples of some natural products biosynthesis (classical examples). Unfortunately, no example on the biosynthesis of phenylpropanoid derivatives is included. However, even though, the book is worth of purchase for students and teachers interested in the mechanistic aspects of primary and secondary metabolites biosynthesis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear-cut explanatons
This book is most suitable as an organic chemistry text for biological pathway and would be valuable for undergraduate students. Each of mechanisms are well illustrated with colorful charts. To my reglet, there is no description on the nitrogen fixation. Nevertheless I recommend it as one of the valuable study-aid book.

Product Description
* Manufactured by Darling Model Kits, this custom kit was designed by T.W.Graham Solomons.
* The kit consists of Darling's basic Molecular Vision kit with a few additional pieces, so that p orbitals could be shown in molecules like acetylene.
* This customized kit also has pieces that allow linear geometry for the sigma bonds of alkynes while also having orthogonal connections at each atom for the associated p orbitals.
* By attaching balls of the right colors it is possible to show the lobes of the p orbitals that make up the pi bonds in an alkyne.
* Ball colors can be matched symmetrically to show in-phase orbital overlap, or antisymmetrically to show an antibonding state.
* Use of colored balls with the appropriate framework geometry is a very nice feature of the Darling model set.
* Pieces from Darling's inorganic model set and are used for octahedral geometry. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Molecular Model Kit
This product comes with a card board box that you have to build your own to put all your pieces in. Some directions are on the outside of this box and it is hard to read, and the instruction book isn't straight forward if you just want to skim through it. I had trouble finding what I wanted in it. The pieces are fine but the sp3 pieces started to bend a little after rotating between chairs of a cyclohexane.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not USEFUL; Horrible; WORST EVER; DON"T BUY
This molecular model kit sucks!! You cant even rotate stuff around freely. It's so hard to assemble a carbon with 4 attachments (SOMETHING THAT IS VERY BASIC). It is a piece of crap. If you go to any serious top 20 university and you try to use this molecular model kit, you will fail. DO NOT BUY. PAY A LITTLE EXTRA TO BUY A BETTER ONE OR TRY TO BORROW ONE FROM YOUR FRIENDS!! THIS KIT IS THE WORST EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than anything else out there
While hunting for a modeling kit for my organic class, I initially skipped over this one based on all of the negative reviews. I initially went with a similarly priced kit with many more pieces and much better reviews. However, upon receiving that set, I found that all of the pieces were tiny, and frustrating and painful to put together. I looked for others, trying to avoid this kit, but all of the college-student affordable ones were similar, with lots if minuscule pieces.

In contrast, after getting this one, I found that this kit has solid feeling (for plastic) pieces that are large enough to easily assemble molecules with. Sure, it might have fewer pieces, but is preferable than "miniature" kits that are simply hard to use. If switching from the plastic box to a cardboard folding box saves them money, so be it! I have not found a modeling kit that compares in this price range.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly as pictured, but good enough
I purchased this kit through amazon because it beat my bookstore price at the college by nearly ten bucks. The picture i saw depicted it in the plastic case as it is sold here, however it shipped with a piece of cardboard that folds very intricately into a cheap, tiny little box.has all pieces and manuals intact, so it will work good enough for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
This molecular model kits is plain horrible. First of all, it comes in a plastic bag, not case like many of its competitors. Furthermore, the molecules created by this kit do not stay together. It is almost unusable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
great book, comes with a study guide and solution manual that is very helpfull, in terms of understanding the material. It guides the students through a step by step learning process with all the details of explanation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
This book has received much praise from chemistry greats like Evans and Grubbs, and it is a good book. The treatment of pericyclic reactions is fairly complete and clear. The exercises at the end of each chapter are also excellent and provide a good range of difficulty (although the puns are lame).

The book does have its deficiencies though. The presentation of synthesis is poor and retrosynthetic analysis really isn't discussed.NMR spectroscopy is also not presented in a detailed enough manner to give the reader a good feel of how to determine unknown structures. The presentation of organometallic chemistry using dsp hybrid orbitals is strange and not really the way most chemists think about bonding in organometallic complexes.Structural drawing are also objectionable (not drawn with the normal "vertices=carbons, hydrogens-implied" convention, and structures often rendered in "condensed" linear form).

But perhaps most importantly, for a book catered to advanced classes, there are not examples to give students a good feel of problem solving in organic chemistry. For more advanced classes, Clayden, Greeves, Warren, and Wothers Organic Chemistry is a more appropriate alternative.

5-0 out of 5 stars fast and brand new as described!

My Profile:
Chemistry/Physics dual major

Review:
Bought this book for class. My bias opinion of this book is that it's not for me. I picked it up hoping to learn something from it, instead I'm met with 2000 pages of words. Words are nice, but I'm use to reading grad styled books >> less talk more show. I recommend "Organic Chemistry" by Wade over this text, and now regret lending my Wade book to a friend.

PS: to the author- stop trying to describe orbitals with paragraphs until you've taken quantum mechanics, your analogies are bull. I don't care if you're a well renowned chemist, but as a physicist I am applaud at how orbitals hybridize magically to fit the necessary bonds, and justified with 5 pages of the "that's just the way it is" approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I've read two organic chemistry books (McMurry and, this one, Loudon), and out of the two, this one is better.
Most of the chapters explain the concepts in detail, and they're quite easy to understand.
My professor once in a while tells the class to read the book because it does a good job of explaining things.
The examples or "study problems" help a lot too. When I don't have time to solve the problems and look up their solutions in the study guide, I just do the "study problems" and read the explanations for each problem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME Supplement Book!
I bought this study guide/solutions manual (without owning the textbook itself) as a supplement for the book used by my school. I don't think I've ever been so excited about a book in my life! This is an absolute must have. I just finished my first semester of O-Chem with a C and I'm confident that I'm going to do 10X better this upcoming second semester with the help of this book. The chapter summary outlines are awesome - short, sweet, and straight to the point. The problems are also really helpful because, unlike other solutions manuals, they have the question AND the answer (what a concept...)! So whether you have the textbook or not, this study guide/solutions manual is definitely worth having as a supplement!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy
This was a last minute purchase for school and the book was shipped quickly and arrived on time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely necessary for O Chem!
if you're taking o chem, then you need this book.the summaries are helpful for review of chapters or in the worst case scenario, in substitution of the chapters.but the most important part of this book are the solutions to the problems.the only way you'll learn organic chemistry, like it or not, is by practicing problems.this solutions manual is the only way to know if you're doing those problems correctly - the text book does NOT contain solutions for problems in the book, beside the worthlessly easy ones contained directly in the chapters.in addition to the solution, it contains an explanation for all problems that require one.

THIS BOOK IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY!you won't be disappointed.if anything, go in on it with a friend that is also taking the course.you WILL need this book.

Product Description
This text provides an introduction to organic chemistry for students who require the fundamentals of organic chemistry as a requirement for their major. It is most suited for a one semester organic chemistry course. In an attempt to highlight the relevance of the material to students, the authors place a strong emphasis on showing the interrelationship between organic chemistry and other areas of science, particularly the biological and health sciences. The text illustrates the use of organic chemistry as a tool in these sciences; it also stresses the organic compounds, both natural and synthetic, that surround us in everyday life: in pharmaceuticals, plastics, fibers, agrochemicals, surface coatings, toiletry preparations and cosmetics, food additives, adhesives, and elastomers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I had ordered this book from somewhere else first, because it was a paperback option and less expensive, and I didn't even get informed that they'd cancelled my order until it should've been shipped, a week later. When I ordered this one, the estimated arrival date was the 23rd, and it not only came in in perfect condition at a far lower price than my university, but it shipped earlier and made it to my house by the 20th.I'm very impressed!

5-0 out of 5 stars exactly as it said
I needed an Organic Chemistry book used because I didn't want to spend 200$ in the bookstore and this one for only 30$ caught my eye. It said there was a mild coffee stain along the bottom and some wear around the edges. The book arrived with exactly that condition and I am pleased that the seller was honest and there were no troubles whatsoever.

4-0 out of 5 stars A valuable and well-written tool
This text is a valuable and well-written tool for any person that may have little familiarity with organic chemistry but is interested in learning.Text is accompanied by diagrams and pictures that provide visual aid to help in understanding.Throughout the chapters, sample questions are included along with descriptive answers that help understand the solution's process. Each chapter has questions pertaining to the material covered that are objective as well as questions that may be meaningful in a real-life context.Solutions to problems only exist in the text for odd-numbered questions.Even-numbered questions will require the solution manual.

A must for the avid scientist in your family, helped me in many way through detailed understanding of priciples and equipment. Goog book for the novice or intermediate chemist . Will not dissapoint 5 stars

5-0 out of 5 stars Serendipitous...
As well as being extremely detailed, intelligent and helpful, this book is hysterically funny, which makes it a joy to read and easy to understand. A nice change from the usual ...yawn... science-reference manuals. I would strongly encourage other students to take advantage of this terrific piece of work.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY
This book promise so much by the wide coverage of topics in Organic lab. but it delivers nothing. Aside from listing the topics in the Table of content. The seemingly knowledable Prof. Zubric presents an unorganize, incomprehensible 294 pages of something that read like a page from a low budget Comic Strip. Am shock that a well respected publishing house like John Wiley and Son would lend their reputation to a low quality like this. The author talked about every thing that are irrelevant. what is needed is a good intro. to the subject like -EXTRACTION and then the stepwise layout of professional quality discussion of headings like - Materials involved; procedure; observation; conclusion etc. he fail to approach the subject prof. The book would pass for a Book of Short Jokes. Do not waste your money. D BOOK DID NOT HELP ME IN MY CLASS ANYWAY...

3-0 out of 5 stars Do The Textbook Problems First!
Like "3000 Solved Problems in Organic Chemistry" from Schaumstudy series, the problems in this problem solver are just a bit off fromwhat you will expect on a midterm exam.Problems are either too simple ortoo involved.Students should make sure they understand lectures (andconcepts behind lectures) and attempt problems in the textbook.Studentsshould pay close attention to mechanism problems and stereochemistry.Theproblem solver itself might seem overwhelming and may not be in concordwith concepts being discussed in major organic texts. The problem solver, yet does provide a plethora of extra problems students can look at and trysolving.Another item I suggest students checking out from the libraryrather than spending money on.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful
the format is too confusing. very few questions with mini lectures as explanations. It is very difficult to find the exact question to help with the hard to grasp areas.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Example of an Excellent Supplement for Organic Chemistry
The Organic Chemistry Problem Solver is an excellent supplement for first-time students taking organic chemistry. If fact, in my opinion, it is the best at what it does -- provide students with much-needed guidancein their study of organic chemistry. It is also helpful as a review tostudents who are taking an upper-level course, even the first graduatecourse. It is more than a set of problems with their solutions, however. It is that, but it also provides a discussion of the approach to working atype of problem or to a general topic in organic chemistry --stereochemistry, for example. The description of approache to the studyand application of organic chemistry, detailed solutions, and accompanyingdiscussions and descriptions are the strength of the book and is what makesit so valuable to the student.I would particularly reccommend it to astudent who is in a course where the professor is not using a specifictextbook or is not following the assigned textbook very closely, becausemany of the topics in a first-year organic course are described in enoughdetail to provide the background needed to understand most of theprinciples of the subject; it that sense, it acts a written tutor for thesubject. Two characteristics are somewhat distracting, but they are minor:an older-looking font is used in the text (Courier ?) and the drawings andchemical structures (the extended structure of propane, for example) arecrude in comparision to the slick drawings and structures found in today'schemistry textbooks.I would look past these, however, and get this bookif I were taking a first-year course (or an intermediate or first-yeargraduate course).Used appropriately with the assigned texbook, it will bea great help with a time-consuming course that is considered to be verydemanding to most students. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for review of the basics
If you're just looking to review basic concepts and ideas without reading passages, this is great for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars great workbook
Great practice problems, with answers. I like that the sections refer to the lectures and tell you where you need improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got me a 12 on BS
Did every question in this book and saw my AAMC practice scores increase over the weeks. I did 100 questions of the book each week for 3 months leading up to the real test, and got me a 12. I am still in the process of applying, but feel much more confident with a 34 on my plate thanks to this book.

There are some errors in the book, but keep an eye out for them and consult with those PhDs you pay so much to have around on any that strike you as incorrect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book, for sure
I'm pretty sure that you _must_ have this book if you are studying advanced organic chemistry. Maybe it's not the best one to use as a study guide, but it's extremely helpful as a reference book both for undergrads and graduate students. However, one can argue that this edition is a bit out-of-date.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Reference for Organic Chemistry
This is by far the best text I have found.Although it is considered a text book, it is more handy as a reference tool. I have seen no other book that contains more information than March's.This book is actually worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars An investment that'll last you for years.
I bought a copy of this text (2nd Ed) after finishing my sophomore year of college, and it proved to be the best single investment I've ever made in chemistry.I used it so often, I had to duct-tape the book together.

I think the happiest moment of my career was when my name appeared in the index of a later edition.Anyway, buy it and treasure it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Green Bible of Organic Chemistry
March never leaves my desk. It covers everything. From functional group transformations to mechanisms to FMO theory - you name it it's there. Highly recommended for any advanced undergraduate, graduate or post-doctoral researcher. It's a bookshelf staple that any organic chemist should have available.

5-0 out of 5 stars 1495 Page Bible OfGeneral Reactions And Mechanisms
I paid more for my 4th ed. new, and find it to be worth even more. It is not a cookbook per se, but it is a very comprehensive textbook that details general reactions by functional group. It outlines every way known to remove, add to, or otherwise modify every functional group. There is as much commentary as is needed, if not more, and every pathway is mentioned regardless of how exotic or primitive and low-yielding. The corresponding OS synth refs for specific cpds. are given for each type of reaction, along with a total of 15,000 other refs in footnotes. This was cutting-edge in 92, with much updating of the 3rd ed. The index will take you to the section that shows how to make the manipulations you want - if it doesn't, it probably can't be done. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
The book was brand new just like it said in the description and it was shipped very fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book for chemists and medicinal chemists
Some books of this nature tend to focus on the synthesis of drug molecules and less about how they work and why. This book is just the opposite and walks the reader through a logical progression of drug discovery, design and target specificity. This book makes a great introduction to Goodman & Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics which could be considered the bible of the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book with few flaws
The book is great for understanding the title subject. But it has too many references which distracts the reader. Also, many times, the corresponding picture of a particular topic covered is not in the same page as the topic. This requires going back and forth between pages. The problems at the end of each chapter are really good and checks the understanding of the subject thoroughly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding...
This is probably the best book of its kind in the vast and multidisciplinary field of drug design and action. Richard Silverman is an acclaimed chemistry professor at Northwestern University, and in this book he provides the most comprehensive and lucid exposition of the chemical basis of drug action that I have seen. No matter how complicated biological systems and their interactions are, at the basic level it's all chemistry, and mostly organic chemistry. Thus, understand the chemistry and you will go a long way in understanding drug action. An organic chemist will find this book extremely illuminating in a way that would not have been made clear through his traditional education.

The book opens with a short but clear discussion of drug discovery, combinatorial chemistry, patents and clinical trials. Then it leads the reader through a variety of enzyme catalyzed reactions, with examples of major drugs studded all the way. Silverman shows us how nature is the master organic chemist, employing the familiar reactions of chemistry in an unsurpassed manner. The chapter on enzyme inhibition is long and detailed and it's breathtaking. This is a key chapter because almost all major drugs act by inhibiting enzymes. The examples which Silverman chooses to illustrate are both important (including many bestselling anticancer, antiviral, and antibiotic drugs to name a few), as well as very interesting. The last parts of the book deal with DNA binding drugs and with pathways of drug metabolism and excretion. Along all the way, the emphasis is on the chemical reactions that drugs undergo, which are after all the key to understanding their properties. The lucidity of the book is such that a beginning graduate or advanced undergraduate well-versed with the basic principles of general and organic chemistry can easily understand all the contents.

I would say that this book is so interesting and illuminating that it's one of the very few academic books which you can enjoyably read cover to cover. In fact it even makes great bedside reading! Truly a must-have book for chemists and biologists of every kind interested in how drugs work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is fantastic and covers a broad range of topics that fall into the category of rational drug design. The book goes in depth into topics dealing with each important aspect of how drugs are discovered and modified to produce better drugs: from effects of chirality to electronic effects. The structure of drugs, at the molecular level are covered in detail, reflecting every major aspect of drug structure. Then, interaction between drug (ligand) and enzyme, at the molecular level are covered.

In my estimation, to benefit most from this book, the reader should have a working knowledge of organic chemistry and biochemistry (at least protein secondary and tertiary structure). ... Read more

Product Description

This text's clear explanations and descriptions of the mechanisms of chemical reactions teach students how to apply principles in order to predict the outcomes of reactions. Early coverage of acid/base chemistry allows students to quickly grasp the concept that the structures of organic compounds determine their chemical reactivity. This new edition offers a strengthened focus on biological applications that renders the text more accessible to the majority of organic chemistry students and more consistent with the interdisciplinary nature of scientific research.

This text's unique pedagogy encourages meaningful analysis and evaluation. "A Look Ahead" sections at the beginning of each chapter introduce the chapter's main topics and objectives. "One Small Step" features apply familiar concepts to new reagents and reactions, encouraging students to analyze material rather than memorize the outcome to each new reaction. "Visualizing the Reaction" features help students recognize important reactions by demonstrating the complete mechanisms for each type of reaction. The "Problem-Solving Skills" sections offer students a systematic approach to solving organic chemistry problems, allowing them to reason their way to a solution. End-of-chapter materials include a summary that offers a concise review of major concepts or end-of-chapter tables that summarize the reactions that appear in the chapter.

  • New! Complex synthetic concepts and reactions have been moved to chapter 21, which highlights synthetic pathways and strategies and includes new sections on solid-phase syntheses and combinatorial chemistry.
  • New! Biological macromolecules and concepts are discussed in a separate chapter (Chapter 23).
  • New! HM ClassPrep with HM Testing version V.6.1 CD-ROM includes lecture outlines and line art from the textbook in PowerPoint, the Computerized Test Bank and the Word files of the Test Bank in a new, easy-to-use interface with complete cross-platform flexibility, electronic versions of materials from the Instructor's Resource Manual, and a transition guide that directs instructors through this new edition.
  • New! Icons in the text highlight chapter material that students can explore in further detail on the student web site and CD-ROM.
  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is briefly introduced in Chapter 5 to present ideas of symmetry and the chemical equivalence of atoms and groups.
  • The student web site includes "One Small Step" problems, selected "Visualizing the Reactions" features, workbook exercises, concept charts, animations/ simulations, and a glossary.
  • The Study Guide includes solutions to every problem in the text, Concept Maps (key concepts presented in an outline or diagrammatic form), and supplemental problems.
  • Darling's Molecular Visions Kit helps students visualize organic structures and reactions.
  • ChemOffice Ltd includes the introductory student version of ChemDraw and Chem3D, CambridgeSoft's premiere chemical drawing and modeling programs.
  • The Instructor's Manual provides worked-out solutions to "One Small Step" problems, as well as supplemental problems for students, advice on teaching organic chemistry, and directions for in-class chemical demonstrations.
  • The Test Bank contains over 1,200 multiple-choice and cumulative free response questions to accompany the content covered in the text.
  • End-of-chapter tables review the stages of the reactions presented, reminding students of the types of reagents needed, the reactive intermediate involved, and the stereochemistry of the reaction.
  • All problems in the text relate to real-life research performed by chemists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Organic Chemistry textbook
This is one of the most successful organic chemistry texts of the past decade. The author teaches the student to "think" chemistry rather than memorize fact after fact.Thinking chemistry stimulates the student to become creative, and the facts come easily.I knew the author. She was a kind and caring teacher who dedicated herself totally to writing this book.D.M.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This is the book I learned organic I from. When i tried to take organic II at a different school they used a different book, it was more confusing and poor at explaining things (solomons and fryhle). As a student, i think this is a great choice for a book, it was easy to use and the review problems were helpful (though you need the student answer guide).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for reference and review
I own several organic chemistry books: Organic Chemistry By Solomons and Fryle, this book (an older edition), Schaum's Organic chemistry, and Organic Chemistry as a second language. I think that this book lacks in the substitution and elimination reaction chapters. My teacher explained that wonderfully and if you get a good book that explains that well such as organic chemistry as a second language or have a good teacher then Ege's book will make more sense in the syntheses chapter. This book does a great job explaining mechanisms and expects you to know how to write them out unlike Solomons and Fryle who care more about products than how you got them. The summaries and concepts maps are great. The other problem I found with this book is that some of the problems are very advanced (as in graduate level) and she expects you to know things that are not covered in the book until later such as the names of certain organic molecules which are pertinent in solving the problem. This author does a great job explaining isomers, quantum mechanics, and includes topics from every branch of organic chemistry. The author explains thoroughly there is a lot to learn from each chapter but you will be well prepared for later classes.

It is a very good book for those who want to start to learn O. chem, the content is very detail and there are always problems right after each section so that you can practice to master your new knowledge. I really like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book... Make Org-Chem Neat, Understandable, and Fun for even High Schoolers
I used an earlier edition of this book in an Organic Chemistry course in high school, and I LOVED it.The arrangement of the topics in each chapter made everything feel so organized and neat while studying.Chapters are devoted completely to either reactions, nomenclature, or spectroscopy (except the very early and the very late chapters).

This isn't like Carey's book (the one I used in college) in which the functional group is the basis for a chapter's organization, and a chapter can jump from physical properties, to reactivity, to spectroscopy, making the reading of the chapter feel like a mental rollercoaster. The information felt a bit too scattered and artificially gathered, which made it hard for me to be grasp and organize the material in my mind easily.I relied a lot more on rote memorization to do well in the course with Carey's book.

With Hornback's book, however, the information is a lot more manageable to me, since the theme of a chapter is intuitive and focused. For example, when I learn nomenclature, I know I'm just focusing on nomenclature, and I won't float to a completely different aspect of the subject, like spectroscopy or reactions, a couple of paragraphs down. I know that after I'm done with the nomenclature chapter, I will've learned enough nomenclature to be able to become competent and secure with naming organic compounds with any of the basic functional groups, and will be ready to move on to another aspect of this subject, like reactivity. It's hard to get that feeling of focus or thoroughness with Carey's book, where the author moves from one subtopic to another intuitively-unrelated subtopic in a chapter, leaving me struggling to organize this information clearly in my mind.

I really hope this book gets into more Organic chem classrooms. It's a neater, less stressful, and more exciting way to learn Organic chemistry.I highly recommend Hornback for self-study as well.5+Stars. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps a good reference text, but it's supposed to be a graduate intro text
Compared to the 1st edition this text is about twice the size.It is a monstrously large book. However, the book fails to teach the concepts in a clear fashion required when one is just starting in the field.Too much attention is spent to minute details that confound the subject.A great deal of space is used on deriving formulas.

It is without a doubt that the authors are exceptional minds in their fields, and have a fine understanding of the material. However, speaking as a student, they do me no favors in explaining what is going on.This text needs to be rewritten and edited to serve as a useful textbook for graduate students.Until then, the book will possibly be useful as a reference.

2-0 out of 5 stars not authentic
the text I received is much thicker (nearly 2x the size) than the original 1300 page text which makes for a very heavy load. The images are much darker than those it was compared to as well. I can only assume that this text is not authentic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but complicated
I am using this book as part of my graduate class. Before I got this book, I was using the old edition, believe me the old edition is much simpler, easier to understand than this new one. They have integrated the book with overwhelming symbols for which they do not even have the key/index. You spend a lot of time figuring out what the symbols mean. So, I would recommend that you try to get a hold of the old edition of the book, however remember that the old edition does not cover the modelling part and does not give you exposure to the problem sets.
So, the bottom line is that if you want to get an understanding and feel of the subject goahead for the old edition, but if this isyour core area of research and do not mind a bit of complication in the writing and explanation, go for the new edition.
