S. Department of Energy (DOE), a collaborative agreement was initiated in late 1984 between the State of Florida, FSU, DOE and Control Data Corporation (CDC). This first brought about the creation of the FSU Supercomputer Computations Research Institute (SCRI) followed by the delivery in March 1985 of interim computer hardware to the FSU Computing Center ( FSUCC ). By April, the CDC Cyber 205 supercomputer became available to SCRI associates, other DOE researchers around the U. S. and the State University System of Florida. The intention was to get both users and support personnel up-to-speed on the Cyber 205, which was running the VSOS operating system, in advance of the installation of ETA-10 Serial # 1. In its final configuration, the ETA-10 would provide twelve times the processing power and a compatible VSOS environment. The plan assumed that after a successful period of acceptance testing on the ETA-10, the Cyber 205 and its file server (a Cyber 835) would be returned to CDC. The demise of ETA Systems, Inc. forced a re-evaluation of the continued use of ETA hardware. An agreement was reached between Control Data, FSU, and Cray Research, Inc. to exchange the ETA-10G with a four processor Cray Y-MP. The ETA-10G remained in production until March of 1990. A two processor ETA-10Q provided an interim platform until the installation of the Cray Y-MP was completed in early April of the same year. The ETA-10Q was available until November of 1990 as an additional computing resource alongside the Y-MP.

This year's Supercomputing conference has taken an initial step in the direction of an electronic proceeding by providing a central World Wide Web home page with links to the advance program , the proceedings of the technical papers , and abstracts from the poster papers and research exhibits Note: Submission of abstracts and full text papers was optional. Although most authors did submit files there are some papers and exhibits for which electronic files were not submitted. Proceedings: An electronic version of the table of contents of the proceedings linked to abstracts, and the full text papers that have been submitted in HTML or postscript (if submitted by the author). Research Exhibits: These exhibits are, in general, highly interactive, and participants will be able to discuss the projects with their developers one-on-one. A list of the research exhibits is linked to the abstracts. Several exhibitors have also provide a WWW address which can be accessed from a link within the abstract.

Extractions: What is a Supercomputer? A supercomputer is defined simply as the most powerful class of computers at any point in time. In conjunction with some of the world's most creative scientific and engineering minds, these formidable tools already have made automobiles safer and more fuel-efficient; located new deposits of oil and gas; saved lives and property by predicting severe storms; created new materials and life-saving drugs; powered advances in electronics and visualization; safeguarded national security; and unraveled mysteries ranging from protein-folding mechanisms to the shape of the universe. Capable supercomputers are in short supply. Today's supercomputer market is replete with "commodity clusters," products assembled from collections of servers or PCs. Clusters are adept at tackling small problems and large problems lacking complexity, but are inefficient at the most demanding, consequential challenges - especially those of industry. Climate research algorithms, for example, are unable to achieve high levels of performance on these computers. The primary "design points" for today's clusters are server and PC markets, not supercomputing. Christopher Lazou, a high-performance computing consultant, explains, "Using tens of thousands of commodity chips may provide the capacity (peak flop rates) but not the capability, because of lack of memory bandwidth to a very large shared memory." Cray's product portfolio addresses this issue with high-bandwidth offerings.

One of the high-performance computing systems available at OSC is the IA32 Cluster. This is a cluster of commodity PCs with a high speed network interconnect. The current configuration is one file server, node, two front-end nodes, one hundred and twenty-eight compute nodes, and sixteen storage nodes. The file server node has four 550MHz Pentium II Xeon processors, 4 GB of memory, and 72 GB of local storage. Each login node has two 1.4GHz Athlon MP processors, 2 GB of memory, and 70 GB of local scratch space. He once hoped to build a supercomputer that could predict tomorrow's weather today. That challenge has been answered by NEC , and then some, with its new Earth Simulator , based in Japan. While real-time weather forecasting is a snap for this processing monster, it's intended for something even more important: disaster prediction.
