5-0 out of 5 stars Best CCRN Review Book
This book is great! The authors provide information all the way from registering for the Adult CCRN exam to test-taking strategies. The variety and complexity of the questions is perfect. There were almost a 1000 practice questions in this book. Everyone I know that purchased this book has easily passed the Adult CCRN exam on the first try.

I attended the same CCRN course that was maligned by another of the reviewers. Her statements are not factual. The review was so good that our sister facility immediately scheduled a review program. All 31 of us passed first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped pass CCRN
This book has really great information for passing the CCRN exam. The CD gives you the computer practice to make you feel comfortable with the question format. Especially if you are not computer savvy. Others remarked on errors, they were minor and the authors sent the corrections themselves so I didn't bother with the publisher. I have never had a book that was free of errors. This includes the AACN Core Curriculum books and the PASS CCRN.

1-0 out of 5 stars Errors and more errors
The book is good in that it has many questions. However, it has many, many errors -- whomever wrote and/or edited it must have done it in a rush.I cannot recommend it due to errors -- in the end more confusing than helpful -- very sloppy work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I bought the first printing and it had some errors, then contacted the authors (they put contact info in the book-how many authors do that and actually answer?). They sent me a list of corrections right away. I also contacted the publisher who verified that corrections had been made by the authors prior to publication, but they had not transferred over. The first printing has errors and sold out really fast. The errors were addressed in the second printing. If you have a question, just contact the authors. I used the book and scored 100% on two major sections. I was weak on ABGs, but this got me to easily understand them. Everybody in our hospital that went to the review and got the book passed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adult CCRN Certification Review
This is an excellent review book. Yes, there are a few minor errors but the authors were VERY responsive. I understand the 2nd priniting has corrections. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to PASS their exam! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The book is missing 33 pages
The book was missing almost the entire chapter brake so I don't recommend buying this seller.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so sure
I had just taken 5 test past three, I checked with some of the info in this book after the test.I found little that correlated with the questions.
I passed the three, because the info did not change in those three areas in along time.
The others, material wasn't even close.
Am looking for another test booklet

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful. This is a "should-get" book
I bought this for my husband because of the reviews I read on it at Amazon and he needed a test prep book. He just took the ASE tests A1-A8 and passed them all Nov. '09. He has taken them before--I think twice.

His review:
"Yay. A beginner would definitely benefit from this book as well as taking the ASE practice tests that they offer online. I did both. I think the studying helped although there was not one question from all my studies including the online stuff that matched or were the same. But the concepts were there that I needed to get the textbook take on (as opposed to the real world take)".

A personal note from me: My husband is an excellent test taker anyway, so that helped. He was top of his class in auto school. He has worked in the auto field for 10 years, so he wasn't a "wet nose" starting out when he took the ASEs this time. This is the first time he has used this book.

Bottom line--my husband says this book helped him, but if you're looking for the exact questions and answers, you probably won't find them anywhere. This book requires you to use your brain, which you should be doing anyway instead of memorizing questions and answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Automotive Technician Certification
Great study guide - very helpful and thorough - item as described - thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Manual!
This manual is great for anyone who is preparing to become ASE master certified, or for anyone who is going to take more than one automotive ASE exam. The hints in each chapter are helpful on some of the tougher questions and the practice questions really help to prepare. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars this book its just great!!

i recieved thisbook like 4weeks ago and its just great, i got it right on time, exellent service!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Informational, but.....
For the ICND1 I read Todd Lammles exam prep, and found it to be both easy to read and very informational. I am about halfway through Odom's ICND 2 book and although it is very informational and I hope I can use it to pass the test, this book just doesn't flow like I hoped it would. Too bad Lammle doesn't write a book just for the ICND 2 exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for the sleep deprived
just crack this book and start reading and you'll be out in no time at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good learning tool
I've sat on this book over a year now.I'm including the ICND1 as well.Out of all of the materials I've used to study for the CCNA, this is by far the least effective.Don't even think about this book unless you already have a decent grasp on the topics discussed.

This book is hard to read, and difficult to understand. It doesn't flow well and isn't particularly well laid out.A specific example would be to look at some of the network diagrams in Chapter 2.It's too much, too fast. The diagrams are not documented.I found myself staring at one diagram in particular for over 10 minutes trying to figure it out. This is in chapter 2.It's not that I'm not capable, it's just that it does not make any sense!

This book just isn't very good. It's a painful, confusing read.I would have thought that a Cisco Press book would be a lot better.

I can safely say that after studying and passing the A+ and Network+ Certifications, being very close to passing the CCNA (no thanks to this book), and having studied and passed several other certifications, this is the worst study material I've paid for. There are better materials.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks critical CCNA material
The ICND1/ICND2 books lack critical information needed to pass the CCNA or ICND1/ICND2 exams. For example, the author states in the ICND2 chapter on OSPF that "DR (designated router) and BDR (backup designated router) election is covered in Cisco CCNP course material... however this material is *critical* to passing the CCNA exam.

While taking practice tests in from one of Todd Lammle's books, I found myself completely stumped by some of the questions - material that was never covered in Odom's book(s). I cannot in good conscience recommend these books to anyone that is looking to pass their CCNA exam, unless you buy at least another book or two as filler. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money!
I did take the ANCC gerontology exam and passed, but not because of this book. Besides being filled w/inaccurate info and typos on nearly every page (such as "areoli" instead of "alveoli"), almost NOTHING in the book was on the exam. MANY of the sample test questions had wrong answers in the key. The only good thing was info on how to apply to ANCC- which was another huge money waste: about $400 worth. What a racket!

1-0 out of 5 stars inaccurate information
Unfortunately this book is filled with inaccurate information. The very first question has a wrong answer.I found at least 25 errors within the text and sample questions. I shared this info with the APN who provided the review course at the hospital where I am employed.Beware!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Rationales Please!
I agree with previous reviewers in that the book is a wonderful concise study tool. I love the fact that it has so many review questions. My only criticism is that the answers should contain rationales for a better overall learning experience.

3-0 out of 5 stars certification here I come
The book is very informative. But, I wish it included the rationale with answers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I bought this book to help with studying for the certification exam.I haven't taken the exam yet so I can't speak to how much the book helps. However, I love the way the book is written. It doesn't disguise the information in wordy text.It is concise and fact specific.Easy read! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great review book
This book is a great review, really easy to read. Both women's health and nurse midwifery content is covered well.

3-0 out of 5 stars A lot of info in one place...outdated contraceptive information
I bought this from the publisher along with the audio tapes because a friend had a good experience using their Acute Care Nurse Practitioner review. The audio tapes are WAY outdated and frustrating (and in CASSETTE format?! I had to go buy a walkman to listen to them)...the instructor on them doesn't know what Plan B is. The purple workbook itself is great in that there is a comprehensive review of the majority of info you need to know in one place and has review questions at the end of each chapter. The bad: It was published in 2004 so 1. The STD tx guidelines are outdated, 2. The contraceptive information is outdated: they have info on Lunelle & Norplant, but no Plan B and nothing about the black box info on Orthoevra, and 3. The HRT guidelines are outdated. The ACNM's 2007 review book isn't out until next month so I'm glad I have this to study for my comp exams but my guess is I'll probably supplement my study materials for the boards with the ACNM book as I'm nervous I may be getting misinformation from this book in areas I'm not even aware of.

4-0 out of 5 stars Midwifery Certification exam study guide
This book was a big help in studying for the certification exam. The style of the questions and just the repetitive nature of the questions helped a lot.I passed on the first attempt.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast shipping
The book was arrived fast but the middle part seemed falling apart. After a little glue push, it works just fine now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth it
This book explained everything on the test in detail and was easy to understand. I recommend getting the Cliff's Test Prep too because of the practice tests (this one did not have any but was definetly worth the money). Passed the test my first try.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Success

I would just let anyone that is intrested know that this book is an excellent resource to succeed on the Certification Exam. My only negative would be the need for more practice questions. One suggestion would be to acompany the above book with a workbook comprised of just practice questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great study guide!
I do not have a degree in education and it has been 14 years since graduating college. This book was fantastic for getting reaquainted with the elementary curriculum and material long since forgotten. The sample questions are great.I also highly recommend getting the CliffsTestPrep for the Generalist Ec-4.It has 2 full length practice tests and is also GREAT! I passed my test the first time with a 280!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
If you are taking the principal test in Texas, this book is a must have. Easy to follow and the ONLY book to buy. Full of information and techniques.

3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated, maybe good if you don't know competencies well
First, let me state that I did pass my TExES principal exam.

But I don't think it was due to this book.I bought this book because (1) there is very few principal TExES review material and didn't have much to choose from anyway, (2) felt like I needed some kind of review, and (3) this book had good reviews on Amazon.

I'm writing this review in 2009, and I bought this book in 2009. It's very outdated for this year.It still talks about the TAAS test (we have long switched over to the TAKS test now).It spends 99% of the book going over the competencies and what they mean...then the author advises that the best way to study is to read the competencies over and over again. While the author does a good job discussing each competency in detail, I didn't find this to be helpful to study for the test when what I really wanted was a chance to apply it and practice. It has some "practice questions" at the end that are no where near the format on what is presented on the TExES.Maybe in the past the test was in a different kind of format?

My advice is not to waste time with an outdated book that doesn't really give you practice.I found the actual released TExES practice principal manual (it's free- google it) to be the most helpful. The manual comes from the test-makers themselves and it has all the competencies that you can read over and over as well as actual real practice questions (about 40 of them) at the end with the answers. It's up to date and it's what I studied.

4-0 out of 5 stars Texes Study Guide
The book is in great condition, a little outdated because Education changes so rapidly, but great study guide

5-0 out of 5 stars I used it to Pass the Colorado Principal Exam!
In Colorado we have the PLACE Exam for Principal licensing. However there are no official study guides for the test.I purchased this book after failing the PLACE and found that the TExES Domains are almost identical to the PLACE.Dr. Wilmore also gave great test taking strategies that were extremely helpful.I used these strategies on the provided practice test, and two PLACE Practice test (one for Principal and one for Superintendent) and scored a passing grade. Then I applied them to the actual PLACE Exam and passed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Text from the TExES Queen
Dr. Wilmore's Book Passing the Principal TExES Exam is a great help to the students working towards their Principal (mid-management) certification. The text is built around the Domains and Competencies set by SBEC and will guide you to achieve your personal best score! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars SCJP objectives + Java foundation
This book teaches you a complete explanation of Java and SCJP. I Also used the K&B book for the test and the main differences is that the K&B is 100% about the test and it expects you to know basic Java and OOP. On the other hand, K&R goes beyond the test; K&R expects you to know some programming but not necessarily OOP. This book will helps best for people with minimal Java experience.

2-0 out of 5 stars I do not recomend
I would not recommend to use that book for the exam preparation. The text is organized in boring, hard to read and reader-unfriendly way. The code examples are misleading. A lot of irrelevant information Some review questions do not contain answers in the end of the book. After working for a month with that book I had to buy Kathy Sierra's book in order to get ready for the exam... Kathy Sierra's book is much more easier to read and the material is organized there much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars I succeeded having this book as study compagnion
I bought this book, because i wanted to pass sun's examination (scjp)
Without having any prior Java knowledge, i based all my study exclusively
on this book for that purpose. I was reading it thoroughly and practiced, many hours per day for 9 weeks. After finishing it i took the mok exam at the end of the book, and i failed! I did one more review on my weak topics for 1 week and then
i took the official scjp test in a prometric center.
From what i heard, i was expecting the questions to be in a somehow easier
level than that of the book. Instead imho they were harder! Solutions wheren't as
apparent as i thought (simple put they do are tricky! no matter what they claim) Nor where the questions 72 but 60 (time three hours)
Nevertheless i passed the test with a 70% score (pass limit 58%).
So apparently this book managed to cover succesfully the needed topics,
allthough i would recommend studying for more time and from 2 books simultaleously.
I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
Great preparation - very in depth and detailed. Only thing I would add is more excercises.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended
I would not recommend this book. I set up a study group for the Software Engineers on our contract to prepare for the SCJP exam. We decided to use this book as our study guide. After chapter 3 we all agreed that we did not like this book and decided to switch to another. This book is written in a way that makes even simple concepts confusing. I found myself having to reread concepts that I already knew over and over again just to try and understand what the author was trying to present. In my opinion this book is horribly written. I would have given this book just 1 star, but I did like questions that the book provided. My group has switched to "SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Exam 310-065" and so far I have no complaints. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Review
I thought that the book arrived in a reasonable time.I think that the book provides good information regarding HR related functions. This book is a good starting point for anyone looking to take the PHR or SPHR.

4-0 out of 5 stars Did the trick
I had finished my MSHR, but did not have work experience so I was worried about taking the PHR exam. I think the book was a good prep, it could have gone into a little more detail. I was able to pass the exam on the first try.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor choice for preparation
I purchased this book as a supplement for the HRCI materials and found that it hurt, more than helped. The information is presented in a different manner then the HRCI materials. The text is full of both meaningful omissions and irrelevant materials. The book is capped off by 4 assessment tests with one poorly written question after another.

5-0 out of 5 stars HR Certification
With this book I'm sure to pass my SPHR. It is full of knowledge and has helped my department of new HR associates.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not ready for prime time
To put this in context, I purchased this book in order to prep for the SPHR test, which I first took and passed in 2000 (dumb move on my part to let it lapse). In 2000, I basically got an "intro to HR" college textbook, which turned out to be sufficient.I could not get my hands on a textbook this time, so I ordered this book.
Sorry to say, this book was a rather poor choice.Scads of important subjects are missing or poorly treated. To give just a few examples, COBRA is never mentioned, nor many union-mgmt strike terms, nor are compensation terms such as red circling and so on--all of which were featured on the test, of course. Also, there are numerous typos and apparent omissions, indicative of a sloppy effort. In many cases, the sample test questions refer to concepts never covered in the book. The sample tests are plentiful (four 225-question tests), but I am quite sure the questions were not validated.I often thought the "correct" answers were dubious (but then again, you will think that on the actual test as well.)The tests were helpful in identifying subjects I needed to research elsewhere, since the subjects were missing from the book.My extra research was what saved me.
For you test-takers out there, I will add that I found this year's SPHR much more challenging than in 2000.Most questions required different layers of analysis. In only about 10% of the questions was I sure I had the right answer--and keep in mind, I passed the sucker (don't have my score yet).Fortunately, I test well--and I only studied for 3 days. The HRCI assessment tests were a big help to me (they should be, for $70--and ten of the 75 questions on the second test were REPEATS!--thanks, HRCI).As you take it, write down the subjects to further study.
Taking the test soon?Best of luck, and get a better book to study. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Enough for the Exam and nice list of drugs
First off, I passed the exam from studying this book.It certainly prepared me far beyond what the test required, so that's good.It also has a list of vitamins, drugs (by generic and brand), and a list of suffixes relevant to the type of treatment a drug is for.

Only problem is the organization of this book. It's unorganized. The topics are all over the place and many things are repeated over and over again.Very distracting and confusing in plenty of places, so watch out!

Get this book if you want something cheap and gives a good summary of what the exam expects.Oh ya, the CD is definitely the most valuable part of this book. The flashcard are great and the practice exam gives a pretty good feel of what the real exam looks like.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Review Book
It was pretty straightforward, although I did notice a few spelling errors in the names of some drugs and some problems with the answers to the practice exams (like it would say b-microscope, and then in the back of the book it would say c-microscope).The organization of the book was clear and the info on the laws and pharmacy practices were good.Overall, it was a good experience and definitely worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Learning Guide
I ordered this book for my 18 year old son who is a chemistry major with an interest in becoming a pharmacist.I am a registered nurse, who has been tutoring my son with what I thought would be the necessary info to pass the exam.Oh boy, am I happy I got this book. It really covers every aspect of pharmacy tech knowledge and responsibility. You won't be disappointed.Just go through it cover to be cover and you should be able to do well on the exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book if you have strong base
I use this book for two weeks and i passed ptce , but you should buy another book for theory,

1-0 out of 5 stars Printing errors
I am in disbelief at how many errors I found in this 2008 edition!I can only hope that other editions are better. I have spent several agonizing hours trying to figure out several Math problems, only to find out that the book had misprints!Unfortunately, not only did I find errors in the Math section, but the English section as well!

I have never written a review before, but I simply felt that I needed to warn potential students about how confusing this book can be!

3-0 out of 5 stars Study guide makes you work, but not enough sample tests
I used the study guide in the math section to give me an idea of what will be on the test. Granted I had to use the internet to help understand the several missing steps in many of the examples, but overall the point was to re-educate myself on math concepts. I believe I did that successfully.

4-0 out of 5 stars FTCE Study guide
Good seller - very prompt delivery.Book is excellent - thorough prep for the exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars FTCE Elem K-6 Study Guide
For the most part, I agree with A. Walker's review. I did pass the exam the first time using this guide in addition to an online review site. There were questions on the exam that I was able to answer only because I have some teaching experience, not because the information was in the guide, so there is some critical thinking required over and above the study guide material. I am still very glad I used this guide. SN

3-0 out of 5 stars Good with minor issues
This is the 3rd XAM book I've purchased to study for FTCE exams, and overall they seem to be consistent with the material actually seen on the test.I took and passed the General Knowledge test in March 2008.

XAM books tend to have a significant number of typos. Some of them are frustrating because their math problems will leave out parts of the problem that you need in order to solve the problem. You'll recognize the issue only when you look through their solution and see that they left something out.For the most part, it doesn't affect the overall product, but it can be frustrating.

The only other thing I really look for in a test-prep book is that the practice exams are similar in content and difficulty with the actual test.

For the math section, this book's practice exam are mostly representative of what you will expect on the day of your test.

For the English section, the practice test was less in line with the actual test.Part of the practice exam was similar, but it doesn't include some of the types of questions (and there are study books that do).

The reading section is a bit more in line with the test than the English, but the question-writing seems sloppy and not quite the way that the actual test will be done.Definitely similar enough that it is useful, though.

Overall, XAM books tend to have tests that are better than other books, but the errors are numerous. The 'learning' portion of XAM books is pathetically lacking, in my opinion. If you are trying to actually learn the information to pass the test, XAM books are probably not the way to go.But, if you need a book with decent practice exams to assess your ability before the test, this is a good product for that purpose.

Personally, I bought about 2 books for each test I was preparing to take, and if I were asked, I would recommend this be one of multiple books you are going to buy, but if you are only going to purchase one study book, find a better one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great knowledge base for understanding what it takes to be a protection professional
Mr. Bennett once again has assisted me in my endeavors as a security and protection professional. His book not only assists in helping you prepare for the ISP certification, it provides first hand insight and mentoring on how to advance your career goals in this complex field. In using his study guide, one can get a real understanding of how the certification process is and study to overcome the challenges of taking the exam. The one recommendation I can say is to combine it with the pocket edition, so you can take and read while on the metro to work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I have been studying for my certification for several years and am petrified of taking tests, but using this book, I am feeling more confident each day!!Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars ISP Certification - Industrial Security Professional Exam Manual
If you are preparing to take the ISP exam, I would highly recommend this book. Lots of great tips are presented as well as comprehensive practice exams. I am a new security professional and plan to take the ISP exam in about a year if I feel I am ready. For now, the book will serve as my guide to find areas where I am lacking knowledge so that I may find adequate training in those areas and become a well-rounded security professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars ISP Certification - Industrial Security Professional Exam Manual
As a retired US Army, Chief Warrant Officer Five (CW5), Counteringelligence Officer; former Special Agent, Defense Investigative Service (DIS); former Special Agent Defense Secuirty Service (DSS); former US Army Liaison Officer to Headquarters, Department of Defense (DoD), Alexandria, VA, Counterintelligence Division for Counterintelligence Issues, and former owner of a Small Veteran's Business, under a DoD contract to conduct Background Investigations for DoD Personnel Security Clearances, I consider this book to be brief and it makes the complex simple. This ISP Manual is a must for those preparing to take the ISP Certification Exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars ISP Certification Manual
I bought this book 8 months prior to taking the exam, and coupled with the modules on the NCMS website, passed my exam on the first try. Most of us are not using all the skill sets of an industrial security professional but only the ones necessary to perform our jobs, this book takes the reader to other areas previously unexplored. If you are studying for the ISP exam, I highly recommend this book. To me, it was invaluable. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a helpful book
I ordered this book to try to supplement the Mosby's book I already had, but found this book not worth it's price. It's chapters are extrmely short, it does not have all the pharmacy law in one chapter, it's spread out throughout the book.It does go over the customer service aspect of pharmacy, but that's about the best I can say about this book.It DOES NOT go over the medicines, one of the most important aspects of pharmacy. There are no practice exams, no chapters dedicated to learning the calculations. You cannot use this book to study to be a pharmacy tech, it is not truly a certification exam review.I do not recommend this book to anyone trying to study to be a pharmacy tech.If you need a good book try the Mosby's Review for Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars NOT AS HAPPY
I WAS KINDA DISAPPOINTED WITH THE BOOK. I EXPECTED IT TO BE ALOT MORE OF WHAT I NEED TO KNOW FOR MY STATE CERTIFICATION BUT DIDNT LIKE IT AT ALL COMPARED TO OTHER BOOKS I HAVE LOOKED AT.

5-0 out of 5 stars great quick study guide
This was a great quick study guide, but I did not rely on any one book.I was new to the pharmacy career and bought most of the books out there to help me!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not so useful
It doesnt contain what they asked in my Exam. They want many more than this small book.

3-0 out of 5 stars a pharmacy tech's little helper

I have not read this book, but have been a Pharmacy Technician for 13 years. The correct answer to the question posed by the last review is: yes, the answer is false. A Physician can write a prescription using the chemical name for a drug instead of writting the brand name even if there is no generic available. The chemical name for a drug is sometimes used as the name for that same drug when it becomes a generic. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good book but has errors
There are many errors in this book. The errors are located at [...]. This slowed my learning.I certainly did learn a lot from this book and hence will give it a 4/5.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not too good
The errors are many, even the posted erata on [...] has errors. For example, on page 12 it states that there are 4 Sql versions that can be deployed in a production env. Enterprise, Standard, Workgroup and Express. This is laid out below in a table of features per version, listed as Standard, Workgroup, Express and Compact. What happened to Enterprise? It's missing, and we have compact in its place. The entire chapter is focused on features and versions and there is nothing for Enterprise. So taking the question at the end of the chapter requires that you know about enterprise edition (which you don't) even though "D. Sql Server 2008 Enterprise" may be the correct answer.

But also I felt that I got ripped off. The book cover and description says that there are hundreds of test questions in the practice exams on the CD. In my CD there were 3 exams, each of them allowing only 5 questions each. And these exams were ALL about Windows Server 2000 or Sql Server 2000. Apparently I must buy a fully functional version of VisualCertExam Manager to read the rest of the questions. Thanks, M.S. Nice switch and bait.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is a good book BUT...
The important thing to note of this book is ensure you check the errata page on O'Reilly's product page for this book.

I believe the low points of the book have been hit by most of the other reviewers of the book. This is the point I want to make: when did this book get published? Copyright page shows 2009. What year is it? 2010, I think it is time for a new revision of this book to come out, especialy since a service pack has already been released and SQL Server 2008 R2 has come out.Although I don't know that the exam is being updated yet for all this.

I have taken the 70-432 exam (and passed).I took the exam prior to completely reading this book, which that is mostly due to expiration of a voucher coupon. However I do believe this book will help you in preparing for the exam. As many other people state and in general for taking Microsoft exams this should not be your only source. I have worked with SQL Server since 2004 (year not version:). I started playing with SQL Server 2008 not long after it came out.If you are familar and work frequently with SQL Server 2005 this book is useful for getting you aquainted with the new features of 2008 and the changes made on how it handles some things.

The content of the book covers pretty much every detail of SQL Server that you would encounter, even if you have not worked with SQL Server 2005. So it can be a good reference book to refresh up on a particular area of SQL Server 2008. The practice exam is invaluable if you have not taken Microsoft tests before. They actually do help you find the weak areas you have with SQL Server. I believe this content mixed with SQL Server Books Online could be used to prepare for the exam if you have access to an installation of SQL Server 2008.

Overall if you want to learn SQL Server 2008 and study for the exam this book is an option.Although you need to pay attention to the errata page on O'Reilly for the information in the book that is not correct. That link is found here: [...]

4-0 out of 5 stars The Book is only as good as the reader
I want to start out by identifying myself.I'm a SQL DBA I've got around 8 years of experience, I've got my MCITP for SQL 2005 for Database Administration. So I've read the 70-431 book cover to cover and I can understand some of the criticism of this book, but will address that later.

I bought this book to train for the 70-431 test, I didn't upgrade my cert but choose to take 70-431 & 70-450.Now I studied the book like crazy, I made flash cards, I used the CD in the back of the book, but I did not rely on it.Anything that I felt was not flushed out as well as I liked I would study on MSDN, or great blogs like Paul Randal's.I read several white papers, and was able to use a lot of the knowledge in the work place, which re-enforced my studies..... And I passed the Cert test.Mike's knowledge of SQL Server is great, but there are a lot of sections where Deep Dives will reveal more detail and may even contradict what is written. But bottom line if you study the book, the concepts, and the practices, and know them inside and out then this book is enough to prep you for the exam.

If you want to be a SQL Rockstar, (Google Brent Ozar and SQL Rockstar and read his article), then this is a beginning and you have a lot more work to do.But that goes with a lot of things in life, if all you are willing to do is crack open this book, study it's questions, and do nothing more to prepare for this exam then you are missing a lot of SQL Server Knowledge and while you *might* pass the test you will be a so/so DBA, then that is your choice.

But Dear Reader it is up to you to get that knowledge and Mike does a great job of providing you a diving board to spring from. The question remains, how far do you want to go as a SQL DBA and how hard are you willing to chase it?A book is a book. The reader determines what is achieved with the knowledge they derive from the book.

IN COMPARISON TO 70-431

There is a review that states that this book is far inferior to the 70-431 book. And I would agree.

I would, however, like to point out that Microsoft has tried to specify the SCOPE of DBA training.Whereas 70-431 had to address DBA, Database Developer, and BI (until BI was later split out on it's own path), 70-432 only covers DBA items, and the scope of the exam is also narrowed.

So is 70-431 a better more inclusive book?Yes, but it should be.

It is like saying the Star Wars Trilogy is a more complete story than just Empire Strikes Back.

Yes it should be it is 3 movies not 1.

And yes 70-431 should be, it was meant to cover 3 subjects not 1 (even thoug it was weak on BI which is why they split it out).

This is a very Good book, and I recommend it to anyone who is studying to take the 70-432 exam.

Let's see, (pull's out check list)
Fan boy mentions of Paul Randal and Brent Ozar.....Check
Find a way to bring Star Wars into the conversation....Check

well I think that covers it I hope this review helps you decide if you will buy the book or not.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great format and poor authorship
I recommend this book because of it's format and still valuable content.
However...
Honorable author Mr.Hotek
If I had to mention every technical mistake and every 'fisherman' story you have in this book, I would be able to write another book about your book.
If you stop telling your endless stories about you saving your 'mythical' clients who run 1000's of databases, tech. proofing book text and stop 'watering' needed context with questionable advises, this book would easily get 5 stars because it's format deserves 50 stars.

Here are few examples.
1. page 597 where you write about yourself:
An application
developer for about three decades and a Microsoft SQL Server professional for almost two decades, he has
consulted on over 1,000 SQL Server projects
He is proficient in over 40 development languages or platforms.

Note 40 LANGUAGES and 1 consulting project every 5 days over 20 yr - simply impossible to believe.
Don't call me root, but I doubt anybody can pass an interview claiming he is proficient with 10 or even 7 languages, not 40.

pg. 592, last line: 'Alter Login' is used to re-map logins and db users - this is the wrong answer because 'alter login' does not remap logins and users. There is no right answer in the set you provide. Right answer would be 'sp_change_users_login'

pg. 597, Answer on question 'Which raid provide best combination of performance and fault tolerance'.
According to Mr. Hotek, raid 5 provides less fault tolerance then raid 10. This is wrong because raid 10 provides better performance on write and slightly lesser performance on read and equal tolerance.
So depending on application of that resource your answer could be either completely wrong of only 50%.

However I would like to ask Mr. Hotek question if he knows how to measure disk performance of raid 10, 5 or any other? Because it's simple but he does not mention it in a book which I think would be very practical.
Implementation of raids is different from company to company, from architecture (SAN vs. DAS) and I happened to be testing all of it.

pg. 490:
Best Practices
SSMS provides a single interface for configuring all the components of log shipping.
Although the interface can perform all the configuration, most database administrators
(DBAs) prefer to use Transact-SQL to set up log shipping.

That's another example of highly subjective and I think wrong view presented.
While I am coding about 30yr and 20 yr with tsql and consider myself very 'scriptable' person(Korn Shell, vbs, Perl), I can not agree with above statement.
I was coding 'log shipping' on ms sql and Sybase for at least 10yr. However, when it came out as an option in ms sql, I do not even try and haven't seen anybody doing it manually.

... and this list goes on and on.
I actually do not have problem with technical 'wholes' in Mr. Hotek book or his own, I have a problem that his often wrong views are projected to large community. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars emt basic
it was a good book for review, although most of the nat'l reg questions were a little different then the ones presented in the work book, it still helps to go over any questions that relate to the basic concept of ems

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated
This book would have been great six years ago.It is way too simple to properly prepare you for the test now, and it doesn't contain a lot of the information that you will be seeing on the test they are currently giving.Get something more up to date that includes reviews on weapons of mass destruction and other hazardous materials. This what what I used to study when I challenged the test to get my card back, and I was very unpleasantly surprised to find out that this book was pretty much useless when I failed my test.

5-0 out of 5 stars prepared for me test
this book was a good review. if you did well in the class and read the EMT classbook, this should be enough preparation to pass the national registry the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth it!
Out of all the books I see my classmates buying this one is by far the best to prep you for your national test.

4-0 out of 5 stars National Certification
I was hoping to get the Review Manual for National Certification sooner than what I did, but the book is in great condition and it came soon enough for me to utilize it before I took the test.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so great
While the book covered each standard, there were quite a few errors and omissions. In fact, Brazil was not mentioned in the countries of South America. There were typos and repeated questions and answers. It provided me with a general overview of middle grades social sciences but the GACE exam was much more in-depth than this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars I want to pass this exam
Being new to the teaching profession, I am interested in learning as much as I can and then teaching it.This book is very good and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to be teaching Social Studies in middle grades. Kate

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst study guide ever!
This was one of the worst study guides I have ever purchased. This book was filled with incorrect punctuation, incomplete and run-on sentences, and unnecessary repetition of topics. The answer key for the sample test was incorrect too. This book tried to tell me that the government has 4 branches of the government, instead of 3. Also, that to impeach the President meant to re-elect him! Don't waste your money on this study guide. You would be better off getting an old middle school social studies book, and studying that!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst study guide I have ever read!
I bought this study guide a while ago.I tried my best to ignore the dozens of misspellings and poor grammar used throughout the book. Then I took the sample test in the back. The test duplicated questions and often the questions were worded so badly it was hard to figure out what they wanted you to answer.Flipping to the back to check my answers I found that the answers didn't even match up with the questions. The amount of time and money I have WASTED on this book is insane.Their motto- "Higher quality study guides, Higher quality teachers" makes me furious when I think of what garbage XAM is knowingly putting out. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great

4-0 out of 5 stars Great books but there is a big caveat!
I am going through the books at my own pace and enjoying them. They are very informative, concise and add a touch of humor to break up the potential dullness of reading technical materials.

The thing to be concerned with is the simulator.I had the same problem as another reviewer did.The activation code on the back of the Network Simulator did not work.I tried contacting Pearson and they were not willing to help.Don't even bother calling them for support.I contacted InformIT like the other gentleman did and they were able to email me a new code.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the full package I expected
I'm just going to write this review off the top of my head, so I apologize in advance for any rambling & lack of coherency. First off, this boxed set is basically the regular Cisco ICND1 & ICND2 books (that you can buy separately, on their own, or together in the Amazon listing titled "CCNA Official Exam Certification Library (Exam 640-802), Third Edition (Containing ICND1 and ICND2 Second Edition Exam Certification Guides)") in a box with an accompanying bonus CD. So all you really get in addition to buying the books separately is a CD that contains what are essentially practice labs in a router sim. When bundled together, Amazon sells the books for $37.79 but this item is $125.99 (at the time of this review, at least), so you're paying about a $90 premium for just the extra simulator CD. In hindsight, me buying this item was a bad idea. I'm going to review the bonus CD you get and leave my review of the books in the item listing for that particular book so look there if you want my humble opinion. As for the CD, I really didn't find it useful and actually quit using it about halfway through my ICND1 studying. On the CD you get a ton of labs in a practice simulator. The labs are basically a run-through of the problems in the book, so if you find actually doing the problems instead of just reading about them that much more helpful, then good for you. Otherwise, they're just a rehashing of what's in the book. Wasn't worth it for me, at least. The simulation software could have been made better, as well. You could not resize the window and it's pretty small to begin with. Also, you had to open the instructions for each sim in a separate PDF file, so be prepared to print out a LOT of instructions (about 3 pages per sim, and there are a lot of sims), or get a second monitor that you can flip to portrait mode.Simply clicking back & forth from the sim to the pdf windows was extremely annoying.Additionally, the Boson sim software that comes packaged with each individual book actually has a much more friendly interface that mimics what you'll find on exam day. Shame on Cisco Press for letting a third-party have sim software that mirrors the exam sim software but your own software doesn't....Most of the sims are very short & quick which also is somewhat annoying given the process of reading the problem in the PDF and then using the software. To just learn the basic commands, I would recommend that you Google & download Cisco's Packet Tracer which is basically the lab simulator without any pre-planned problems. In a sort of summary - the Boson software that comes packaged with each individual book is a much better product. It is much more similar to the actual exam simulator and is a lot easier to use.It doesn't have nearly the same number of problems on this bonus CD, but it covers a decent amount of the material and should give you enough practice with the look & feel of the Cisco IOS.Maybe if this boxed set was only $20 more than the two books combined, I would recommend it, but I think the $90 extra is just absurd for the quality of what you get. Oh - and don't buy any used copies of this boxed set, either. The bonus CD comes with an activation code that can (supposedly) only be used once.If the person selling the used copy activated it, you could be out of luck on it altogether. Not worth the risk in my opinion. As a side note - the books themselves are quite good although they only give you about 10 practice questions for each chapter (not nearly enough). Also, the Boson practice exam (in each individual book) was pretty tough & covered some material not in the book at all (kind of stupid since you're supposed to take it after reading the book). Anyway, there you go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way better than that other book
The reading was comprehensive. The simulator and the exam sim is a must even if you have experience, it gets you thinking in terms of the way and the what they will ask on the exam. The sims are harder than the ones on the exam. The practice exam questions/sims are not really written like the real exam but are setup to test you in a number of ways the question may actually be framed.

Overall, I thought it was more in depth than the exam. For instance multi-area OSPF, I don't think I had a question about OSPF let alone multi-area(I'm not saying don't study it!!!). Of course it's Cisco, so they test you on their own protocol. EIGRP, switching and bit-flipping is a must.

I didn't really read the ICND1 book, I just referred to a few chapters a couple of time, but it seemed OK too.
The 640-802 is heavy on the ICND2 info.

Yes...I passed 943

I'm thinking of getting the Boson CCNP Lab simulator. Any comments on that? Should I just build my own lab?

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good product
Overall this set of books, practice exams, and simulators prepared me pretty well for the exam. All but 1 or 2 of my exam questions looked familiar so I'm convinced this package covered all of the major topics.

The practice test questions were a little bit harder than my exam questions, which is good.Several of the test sim's were easier than the practice ones, though two of them were of similar complexity. If you can do the labs and the practice sims in this package, then you are in good shape for the exam.Since the sims are such a substantial portion of the exam score, this product could be improved with a few more sim questions.

The books contained 2 practice question errors and a couple of typos, but not nearly as bad as the CCNA 1 book by Stephen McQuerry which had numerous practice question errors.

I advice everyone to purchase at least one other quality practice exam package so you don't take the risk of depending on a single product for an expensive exam. There's nothing substantial missing from this package, but utilizing one other practice exam package might give you a little line of questioning for the same material. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars not the latest edition
It is NOT the latest edition,as I was led to believe. I searched for hours, trying to discover when this review manual was published ,but got no where. The most recent manual came "OUT" the same month.Essentially, for testing purposes, this is worthless...but expensive.!!!
