1-0 out of 5 stars one of the worst books to use for the ccie
You will not pass your written if you use this book to study. I have caught major errors and this book writer had the technical apptitude of a CCNA. The book crosses TCP and UDP ports on a regular basis and the Author has obviously never used or implemented a large scale network. Use the All-in-One by Giles (2nd edition is current Rev)

If you use this book, use it to test your knowledge and take its content lightly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough
Book covers all topics, but not in enough depth. Practice test on the CD is MUCH easier than the real thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWe$ome for a CCIE candidate
I think firstly the CCIE written is just a part for going towards the CCIE Lab..! and this book covers all the material in the CCIE written to a level one can easily understand and research upon, If you only want a single book to go through all the topics then this is it FOR YOU..!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book to narrow your study focus
Great book. Written by a fellow Lucent NetworkCare engineer. This is not intended to be a all in one book to pass the exam. This book allows you to focus your studies on what is likely to be presented on the exam. I would do further reading on each topic. I have heard from many canidates that the Caslow book has alot of the more detailed information that will be on the exam. I did however find some errors between the the questions in back of the chapters and the text. Also, the major routing protocols where covered in about 7 to 8 pages each and x.25 was about 20. I have heard that x.25 is not a major focus on the exam, but the routing protocols are.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book for trivia, but not the single source answer...
I'd put this on my CCIE reading list as a good collection of trivia, butyou'll need other books in the wings to back you up.Even with the breadthof topics covered, there were details I haven't found in my other readings. There are some errors, and some of the subjects aren't covered well (likeBGP), but it was still a good read. It's worth the price... ... Read more

Product Description
Cisco Systems' CCIE certification (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert) is the hottest thing going in networking today. Trouble is, the exam you have to pass and the two-day lab you have to successfully complete to earn it, will be the toughest such challenges you've ever faced. Over 70 % fail on their first try. This study guide stacks the odds in your favor.

This is the first independently-produced CCIE preparation reference to include real-life practice lab scenarios. There are thirty scenarios in all, designed to prepare you for the pressure-packed build-break-restore lab portion of the certification process. It also contains 600 carefully prepared questions that are designed to measure your networking knowledge in the very same way the questions on the actual test will challenge you. But unlike the real test, this reference gives you the answers, including detailed, step-by-step explanations whenever appropriate. And each question is coded by topic and certification tract, so you can use this reference to prepare for Cisco's recently introduced CCNA, CCNP, CCDA, and CCDP certifications as well.

In addition to containing all of the questions, explanations, and lab scenarios found in the hard-copy, the accompanying CD-ROM includes software that lets you build your own test by topic, certification track, or both. And when you've completed your personalized test, your score is instantly calculated for you. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money
This book is just waste of time and money. Like meny new books that claimCCIE level training. If you like to pass the CCIE written, read the Ciscopress books and train on the hardware.

1-0 out of 5 stars ccie prep.com's book
This book is waste of money, there are only questions/answers. Not muchexplanation. Badly written.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't be fooled by the name !
After passing the CCIE Written Exam last week, I re-read this book and found that it was not worth to pay such money for it.

Most of topics related to CCIE exam are not covered in this book (check the blueprint ofccie R/S on cisco web site ). Although the tilte of the book is " ...CCIE." , like many "ccie" books on the market now, it hasless thing to do with the real CCIE level !

Publisher should be carefulabout the what this kind of books talk about and don't mislead readers!

Don't get fooled !

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the worse, but not great either
This book, as with most of the CCIE books available today, has many errors. Even on the CD! For sure, this book will make you study harder to verify the author knows what he's talking about.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bought this before it was avail here
I've bought a subscription to the authors web site some time back and bought this book based on all the hard selling he was doing on his website.

He cliams that it was a completed materials for preparing for CCIE.It's not, having taken the CCNA and CCNP, it doesn't even come close forthis exams either.

Worse, all the questions are taken from his web site,so if you subscribe and you bought the book, you are basically payingOVERPRICE TWICE for the same thing in different package !

Lots of errorsin the software. I never got around to the book because frankly thequestions doesn't come close .

I would have put ZERO star if it'spossible ... Read more

Product Description
Cisco has created the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Program (CCIE)-a high level certificaiton program designed to certify the best of internetworking experts. More than 30,000 people tried to qualify as CCIEs in 1997 and this number is expected to double by 1998. The average person takes the test 3 times before passing. The Cisco CCIE Exam Guide is the book that will help the reader prepare for and pass the exam the first time.Amazon.com Review
An undeniably complex and difficult process, passing tests forthe Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert (CCIE) certificationrequires unparalleled, in-depth knowledge. In The Cisco CCIE StudyGuide, Roosevelt Giles provides you with help on the fivetest-subject areas (three are needed to pass, along with a lab test, which the book does not cover). By covering the broad strokes ofnetworking and the dauntingly obscure details of many networkprotocols, Giles comprehensively explains Cisco technology. Thechapters are organized around networking topics such as TCP/IP, datalink switching, asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), and NovellNetWare. Each chapter concludes with a set of sample questions. Youmay find that you disagree with the answers to the questions given atthe back of the book, but keep in mind that the tests reflectCisco's viewpoint on all the technology.

The includedCD-ROM contains sample code for many examples in the book andadditional sample questions. For anyone preparing for the writtentests for the CCIE, this book is guaranteed to be a bighelp. --Robert Frankland ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well, I like this book.
I liked it 10 years ago and I like it now. There are only two problems with this book: first, there are errors all over.Get over it.It's not the author's fault. It's the technical reviewer's fault. It's his/her job to catch this stuff. If you ever become a writer, you'll know this.To fix the book, just download the errata and start marking in your book.If you are too lazy, you have no excuse. Second, the title.Again, not the author's fault. The publisher probably forced it.If the publisher were to do the simple thing of calling it "The Cisco CCIE Encyclopedia" all the sudden it would get 4 stars all over.Since it's a "study guide", it's trash.Just think of it as an encyclopedia (which is what it is!), then you're good.

If you want to know the DEEP DEEP DEEP details of the details, then this is the place to go.If you don't want to know those things, then you ARE NEVER GOING TO BE A CCIE.It's time to be consistent and realize that it's going to take more than "10 steps to become a CCIE" to rock out the written test and lab.

5-0 out of 5 stars Errors? Who doesn't.Content - Excellent
I read 14,000 pages in 9 months to get CCIE certified, this book included.ALL books have MULTIPLE errors in them, the only way you counter that is by reading MORE than ONE book on the subject. That said, I think you guys are mean or haven't read enough books. This tome is an AWESOME, in-depth look at the topics it covers, and when you read a lot of other books, they seriously fail to deliver the GRANULARITY that this book does which makes it a MUST HAVE.I only wish the author would continue to UPDATE and IMPROVE this book which would not only deliver it from it's obvious flaws, but would keep it in pace with the latest technologies. This book is old, but it without a doubt a true milestone on the landscape of CCIE literature.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pass on this one
Undoubtedly one of the worst books I own. The technical content is often incorrect and self-contradrictory. The text is sprinkled with inappropriate, inane, and spurious comments like "Life is good". The writing style is muddled, repetitious and boring. If you seriously want the CCIE I would pass on this book and put the money towards the exam.

2-0 out of 5 stars Error Rich
This guide has more errors in it than ANY technical manual I have everread. They appear both in the sample questions and the in-chapterexamples.I would wait for the 2nd edition...

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
Way too many critical errors.Errors in the diagrams, even errors in the answers to the study questions.DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.Use Doyle or Caslow and CCO to study for the exam. ... Read more

Product Description
Are you ready to tackle the most challenging computer industry exam? This book provides you with the information you'll need to know for the Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert qualification exam. All topics included in Cisco's exam blueprints are covered in-depth. Hands-on exercises and hundreds of challenging review questions will give you the advantage you need as you pursue the holy grail of networking certifications.Amazon.com Review
In a world where most CCIE books are as dense and understandable as a phone book in a language you just started learning last week, the CCIE Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Study Guide is a breath of fresh air--readable, clear, and admirably concise. Unfortunately, that readability comes at a price, and that price is a lack of depth.

You can't fault the authors, though--the CCIE is a daunting exam, covering a wide range of topics in a sometimes-terrifying depth. And given that books tend to fall apart under their own weight if they get over twelve hundred pages, any book publisher has to choose between packing friendliness or information into those compressed slices o' wood pulp. For the CCIE Study Guide, they chose readability, making it perhaps the only beginners' guide to the most advanced certification available.

But since you're going to be buying more than one book for this exam anyway, why not get one you'll enjoy reading? And the CIEE Study Guide functions as a stellar overview, explaining the CCIE topics with deft aplomb and some of the best writing you're likely to see in this advanced arena, where technical wizardry is often valued more highly than clarity.

The amazing thing about the CCIE Study Guide is the cleanness of the writing: it gets the essentials of large unwieldy concepts across in a few sentences. Which is not to say that you won't have to reread it a couple of times to understand some of the rough spots, but the amount of rereading is drastically minimized from what it could be. Carefully thought-out diagrams spotlight various routing issues, and definitely help with visualization.

But even considering the clear writing, the detail is fairly sparse. The responses you'll get to various command lines are sometimes truncated for space, which may cause problems for those who aren't used to sorting through pages of output to find the critical data. The sections on Ethernet frames contain information, but they're not comprehensive. In short, there's a heck of a lot here, but the CCIE will require a bit more in almost every case.

There are 20 questions at the end of every chapter, and they're all right--but they're definitely a step down from what you can expect to see on the actual CCIE, and they're all simple multiple-choice questions. No scenario-style questions to be found here, buddy. The answers, sadly, are terse and don't always explain why the other options are wrong.

In short, backed with some Web research and a couple of other books, this could be the foundation for a real passing grade--but it's not quite enough. However, if you've lost your way during all of the individual exams and need an overview--or want a refresher course that is technically accurate as far as it goes and is comparatively fun to read--then you won't regret it. This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. --William Steinmetz ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Do not use for today's CCIE R&S test - or yesterday's!
I usually feel that a Todd Lammle book is a book to take seriously. While studying for the CCIE Routing & Switching (R&S), I purchased this book anticipating a book worthy of the Lammle title. While I was not too disappointed, I did not feel the book offered any information that I could not find elsewhere. Also, while the book gave a good intro for most subjects (ISDN, Frame-Relay, NAT), I do not feel one would be able to walk away from the CCIE as feeling like you passed solely on this book.I would not place this book within the top 15 books to use for the CCIE.For example - on page 327, how can one show a table of possible protocols found in the protocol field of an IP Header WITHOUT including TCP (protocol 6) and UDP (protocol 17).On the flip side, I did feel that the books discussion was a good intro to BGP - a topic which usually takes books to explain.

I give this book 3 pings out of 5:
!!..!

2-0 out of 5 stars Check the Blueprint for R&S Written
Check the Cisco blueprint for R&S exam, be sure that the books you use cover all listed topics...some cover routing protocols and switching adequately but don't cover QoS and Multiservice, for example.Cisco's website is also a great study resource for the new R&S written exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does not fit for the new exam!!!!
i read this book and just faild the new ccie written exam, no matter this is a good book, also there are a lot of mistakes in it, it is worth reading it! But don't feel prepared to take the new ccie written test.

3-0 out of 5 stars Errors
Good Book if you can get past all the errors.I even found notes left, to author himself.I have never seen so many errors. I began to doubt most of the text.
Why can't someone just audit the book before publishing and catch all these errors?

Terrible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but need to supplement
I agree with the other reviewers here that the book is well written, gives good coverage of most topics, but overall is a little light technically on some things.

The chapter on BGP was quite technical, though, and I appreciated that. I'm used to reading full-length RFC's (i.e., I've read the ones on the original TCP/IP protocol and such additional topics as DHCP, and so forth, and I can tell you from personal experience, they can be quite quite dense).

I should mention that I'm a long-time server administrator side person and am currently retired at the ripe old age of 50. When I was working, I really don't need to know that much about Cisco products, since I worked for a big Fortune 100 company and we had whole departments of people handling that side of things, just as I was responsible for the server side of things. But as I now have plenty of time on my hands, I'm currently working through all the books for the CCNA, CCNP, and CCIE that I can find in order to just get somemore background in these important areas, mainly for my own curiousity. Who knows, maybe I'll even take some of the exams. (If the stock market keeps going down, I may have to go back to work anyway!)

The Cisco books and the Sybex books have been my main resource for all of this. I agree that you need to have other sources for adequate coverage, and I found that sometimes one author's explanation of something didn't click right away, but then the next author's would.

I'm also currently working through the Sybex Switches book, and have found the Cisco Interactive Mentor CD on Switches to be useful also. The CD has interactive labs where you get practice working with the commands and troubleshooting and there is a glossary of technical terms where you can quickly look up something you've forgotten. I don't know if there's one for the CCIE Internetwork exam, but if there is, it might be worth checking out as another study aid. ... Read more

Product Description
Provides three texts for the CCIE Exam and excel as a CISCO Networking professional: CISCO Certification: Bridges, Routers, and Switches for CCIEs, Routing in the Internet, and ATM, Volume III: Internetworking with ATM.Softcover.Amazon.com Review
While not exactly a boxed set meant for either straight shelfware reference nor a clear path to certification, the CCIE Resource Library offers more information per pound than just about any other boxed set out there. However, candidates who haven't passed all of the Cisco second-tier exams are likely to be eaten alive by the dense and unforgiving material presented here.

Cisco Certification is the largest and best book in this three-pack, although it's distinctly not a beginner book--and it may even go above the heads of many intermediate CCIE candidates. The book has been written as a preparation guide for the nefariously tough two-day CCIE lab, and it shows in the methodology. Rather than giving generic advice and tutorials, author Andrew Caslow states that he wants to get you to the point where you can look at a broken system and see instantly where the flaws lie. As such, the chapters are tersely written with not a word wasted, each sentence barreling onward toward the uncompromisingly complex problem-solving exercises at the end of each chapter. If paragraphs like, "In fact, a DLSw session terminates both source-route bridge RIFs and LLC2 sessions at both ends of the DLSw connection. A DLSw peer will also terminate LLC2 traffic that traverses directly connected Ethernet, FDDI, X.25 and SDLC networks" don't scare you, this is the book for you.

Keep in mind, however, that if you skip over so much as a single concept, your understanding of the rest of the chapter may fall apart like a house of cards-- this book has been designed for minimal space and maximum information, i.e., nothing is repeated. But careful and diligent reading will get you thoroughly prepared for the toughest test in the Cisco stable. The exercises are taken from real-life networks and involve all aspects of networking--and the eventual goal of spotting problems quickly and efficiently is never forgotten--a definite strength.

As comprehensive as Cisco Certification, Routing in the Internet is a deep but somewhat dull book (even by computer standards) that rewards persistence. The book is authoritative, and a thorough reading will give you an in-depth understanding of the major routing protocols that will stand you head and shoulders above the rest of the field. But the book is extremely academic, written in textbook form, and most of Routing deals with theory, not hands-on experience. However, there are a lot of theories and potential situations covered, and the packet-level concepts are critical to developing a CCIE's troubleshooting capabilities, making it a must-read for the CCIE candidate.

ATM, Volume III: Internetworking with ATM is similarly content-rich, but it's also the weakest in the set. Packed with many simple yet effective diagrams and a text that relies heavily on said drawings, Volume III is another book that's not for the novice or even an intermediate networking student, and it deals with how ATM interacts with various protocols and topologies in a truly networked environment. While a valuable read, one questions whether a better book couldn't have been placed in this slot.

A $35 savings from buying all of these books separately, the books here seem slightly odd choices--Cisco Certification is geared toward lab preparation, while ATM and Routing are meant to be shelf references, to be read once and then pulled down when you need them. Neither fish nor fowl, it's not a bad investment for the CCIE candidate or the CCIE needing reference... but more books will be needed to flesh out either side. --William Steinmetz ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The 2001 edition is a nice addtion to my technical library.
Prentice Hall is fast becoming a name in the IT publishing world for producing material and books that will help everyone obtain just about any certification and the CCIE Resource Library 2001 edition is one set of books that should make passing the exam easier.

The three-book set is comprised of material starting with Book 1 - Routing in the Internet.Over 370 pages covering topics like the Internet and the architecture of the Internet. Also IP v4 and v6 are discussed and compared and then you begin to delve into the routing protocols, both interior and exterior.

The book finishes up with new ideas such as multicasting and overall seems to layout the Internet in fairly easy language. Book 2 - Voice over IP is new to the set and is written by Uyless Black.Black starts this excellent book off with an overview of telephony and the Internet.

Also covered is DSPs, Voice coders, DSL, modems, PPP, the role of the ISP, performance issues, VoIP Protocols, Voice alternatives and ISDN. Black is very good at breaking down the subject matter and making sure the reader can understand the concepts.

Finally comes book 3 - Cisco Certification: Bridges, Routers and Switches for CCIEs 2nd Edition, written by 2 well-respected CCIEs and authors. Over 900 pages broken down into six parts, part one is the configuration of the hardware.

Part 2 is breakdown of IP and the configurations of the routing protocols like RIP, OSPF, IGRP, EIGRP and BGP. Part 3 deals with non-ip routing, part 4 is bridging and part 5 is for management. Overall the entire collection is some of the best technical material I have seen so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars CCIE here I come!!
One of the toughest, if not the toughest certification to get is CCIE. That's why it's very important to make sure that the books you use are the best out there. Prentice Hall has put together the only CCIE Library I have seen.

In book 1 of the 3 - ATM Volume III - the entire world of ATM is taken apart and dissected for you. Encapsulation, frame relay, DXI and FNNI, LNNI and ARP, multiprotocols over ATM are but a few of the topics discussed in great detail. In the second book - Routing in the Internet 2nd Edition - the book is broken down into 4 parts. Part1 discusses IP and associated protocols including IP V.6. Part 2 takes a look at the interior routing protocols like RIP and OSPF, it does breakdown both RRIP1 and RIP2.

Part 3 is the exterior protocols like BGP and CIDR. Finally in part 4 you have explanations of new developments in multicasting and mobile hosting. The book is well written and well documented and the author really gives a complete look at the internet and how routing is used.

The final book - Cisco Certification - Bridges, Routers and Switches for CCIE is written by Andrew Bruce Caslow a CCIE himself. Caslow has written several other book on the CCNA certification and as with the other books this is an excellent reference manual.

The advanced routing techniques like ISDN and DDR as well as excellent coverage of the Catalyst 5000 switch are some the topics Caslow goes over is this book. Caslow also sheds light on ATM and extensive detail on IP Addressing and routing.

Protocols like RIP, IGRP, EIRGP and OSPF as with non-IP routing protocols AppleTalk, DECNET and IPX are broken down for you. Caslow's knowledge of bridging, which includes source route, transparent and translation is nothing short of tremendous.

Caslow's book has sample scenarios, about the only thing it doesn't do it take the test for you. Prentice Hall has a great number of book on computers and networking and you should checkout their website today. Overall this book can be used as a handy reference manual and a study guide for Cisco tests. The price is small in comparison to what you get.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard to rate ...
It was hard to choose how many stars this library worths. It includes 3 completly different books. The Caslow book is absolutly perfect. It's a very good tutorial, probably the best I know.I passed real written testand even I couldn't find answers to some questions from the test in thisbook, if you want to read just one book and get the maximum information -that's it! You might be not able to answer all questions, but I believe itgives you enough information to pass.

But two other books are completlydifferent. First of all, they are not about cisco. It's just a generaltheory, a lot of packet structure diagrams and protocol description.Language sometimes is very dull and dry. Many topics, especially in the ATMbook are beyond the scope of CCIE exam. Routing book contains a lot ofinteresting information about routing history, current problems andpossible ways of future improvements. Probably, these books are interestedto some readers, but it's not the best choice for CCIE preparation.

I put4 stars just because Caslow book is so good that it makes whole libraryuseful too. But I'd strongly recommend to buy this one book only and spendthe rest of money to some other tutorials.

Product Description
Introduction to Cisco Router Configuration presents the foundation knowledge necessary to define Cisco router configurations in multi-protocol environments. You'll examine a broad range of technical information on routing models, processes, and design. Beginning with internetworking fundamentals, you'll work through the internetworking model, defining the OSI layers and path determination, then move on to basic router operation and configuration. You'll delve into the configuration details for IP routing, Novell IPX, and AppleTalk, and then examine IP addressing and traffic management with access lists. Finally, you'll explore WAN communications, including serial connections, X.25, and Frame Relay. Amazon.com Review
Formed in the classic textbook mold, Introduction to CiscoRouter Configuration is designed as a supplement to the eponymousCisco certification and training course. This is made abundantly clearin the end-of-chapter tests, the "Key Concepts" that dot the pages, and the bounty of diagrams, charts, and tables. But regardless ofwhether you plan to enroll in the class, this volume should be part ofyour networking library. The book's three sections deal handsomelywith internetworking basics, networking protocol suites, and wide-areanetworking.

Internetworking (which editor Laura Chappell definesas that which ties LANs, WANs, software, and extraneous devicestogether) is effectively put in historical perspective in the firstchapters. In addition, LANs, WANS, and the OSI model are all clearlydefined both individually and in relationship to each other. Theremaining chapters of part 1 address the OSI layers and data transportin more detail as well as basic router operations andconfiguration. The section on networking protocol suites isstraightforward in its explanations of TCP/IP, Internetwork PacketExchange (IPX), and AppleTalk in terms of the Cisco networkingworld.

The "Wide-Area Networking" section addresses the complex butessential topics of WAN connections, as well as X.25 and frame relayconfiguration. In the eight appendices tucked in the back of this bookyou'll find answer keys for those pesky tests, discussions of DECnetand Banyan VINES, and a host of other topics.--SarahL. Roberts-Witt ... Book is excellent, price is not. I lucked out and found it at Job Lot for 6.99 brand new. I bought two books there for $14, would have cost me $90 at the book stores. So shop around for a better price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the exam, Excellent as a review.
This book starts at the beginning of what a new networking engineer needs to know and works through several examples of how this works in the real world today. It covers TCP/IP, AppleTalk, IPX, X25, Frame Relay, and more, if you count the appendicies.Unsurprisingly, it's also the best study guide for the CCNA.The writing is vague in places, but on the whole a review of the state of technology this clear is remarkable.

5-0 out of 5 stars I passed the CCNA exam using this book.
I used this book to help me pass the CCNA exam on my first attempt. I found the explanations in this book to be a big help in remembering the CCNA material. I also used the CCNA Virtual Lab e-trainer to practice usingthe Cisco IOS commands.

The book covers Cisco router platforms, their architectures, and applications; teaches configuration management features and uses, and common configuration commands and system/network impact; and demonstrates Cisco communications servers, their architectures and applications. It includes real-life network scenarios similar to those found on the actual examination as well as a section on proven test-taking strategies, warnings on trick questions, timesaving study tips, multiple-part question strategies, and shortcuts. Each question offers a detailed explanation of the answer. This is a valuable reference source of crucial information for IT professionals (even those not actively pursuing Cisco certification).Amazon.com Review
The CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Cram probably won't be the first book to which you'll turn when you begin studying for the monolithically tough CCIE exam, but it could serve you quite well as the last book.

As with most other books in the Exam Cram series, this one is definitely not an introductory, or even a mid-level, book. What the series attempts to do is give a very concise collection of all of the facts that you'll need to remember to pass the test, which becomes far trickier when going into the CCIE; a large portion of the exam questions deal with elaborate and complex scenarios that are near impossible to "cram" into someone's brain at the last moment.

Read our lips: If you're not at least 80% prepared already, this book won't help you. And a lot of the experience that you'd need to pass the CCIE won't come from any book--only hands-on work and extensive real-world preparation will help you.

But, if you're close, and looking to clarify all of those skulking confusions that lurk in every test-taker's mind, this book will get you over the hump. In short, this is the most concise edition of line-level networking protocol information that you could have.

The book is organized in a mostly linear fashion, moving from basic networking theory and going all the way to WAN technologies and security configuration. The writing is extremely dense, but concise (a hallmark of the series), and walks you through the various protocols and configuration information very clearly, sometimes going bit-by-bit through how information gets put on the wire. The reasons behind some of the decisions that are used to decide between two competing protocols--like, say, RIP and EIGRP--are covered briefly.

The CCIE Exam Cram even seems to know that it's too small a book to provide the lowdown on complex interactions; most of the time, it even doesn't pretend that these topics will come up by themselves as a question--if Exam Alerts and Tips is anything to judge by, anyway. It seems to be aimed towards providing you with a gut-level knowledge that'll give you the tools to differentiate between two close calls and troubleshooting the source of some seemingly bizarre conflict; in that, it does a fine job. Intense amounts of information are given here for you to memorize, all of which is critical for the grueling CCIE exam. Nothing can substitute for experience, but the information that's provided here might give you the critical edge that you need. Using this as your last-minute refresher after poring over all of the Cisco official guides and lab exercises would be a good idea, too.

The sample questions tend to be fairly easy, giving readers a choice between simple configuration questions and questions on what protocol is suited for a particular task; not heavyweights, by any measure, but helpful in reinforcing knowledge.

In short, as a final run-through before you actually step into the lab, this book is unparalleled. But, if you haven't done your homework, prepare to be walloped. --William Steinmetz ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Use to Cross-Reference
The book is a guick read as the title suggests (EXAM CRAM). I gave it a 3 because it forces one to cross reference (not because of the content per se) since it contains unfortunate errors in a number of places. And this is a good thing. If one has studied this text (in a negative-postive twist) keeps you on your toes. As a cram it is fine. If this is your sole text you will get hosed. Cross-reference much and see if you can spot the errors. I'm sure this is more a publishing thing than the oversight of the authors.

2-0 out of 5 stars Finishing off The Study
Good overall book for finishing off the studying for the CCIE written.I passed the written on the first go.However, there are quite a few typos, some misc fact errors and the sample test/questions don't reflect what is actually on the test (way to easy).Would definitely review the CCIE TCP/IP Vol. I&II and CCIE Switching books, especially focusing on the review questions - not multiple choice but fill in the blank. The bottom line ... Don't expect to pass the written exam if this is your only source of knowledge/experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please do NOT use this book
Please do not waste your time with this book. It is full of mistakes and inaccurate information. And in parts where it is correct, it is usually incomplete.

I began to compile a list of typos, but totally gave up.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Book if You Want to Pass the Exam!
This exam cram is filled with errors! This is a prime example of a publisher wanting to get something out on the market without ensuring that the material is accurate. The publisher's website has some corrections, but finding them is an adventure in it's own right. After printing the corrections on the pubhisher's website, I noticed even more errors that have not been documented.I would not recommend this book to any serious CCIE candidate.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Glimpse of the Universe
It gives you an glimpse of what you will need to know. It's a great book to read when you first start studying, because if a concept is new to you, you can dig deeper in another book.If you have this book side-by-side with a much larger and more detailed text, you will pass the exam.I suggest Swartz for the "other" book.

Why only 3 stars?Because it's just filler for other texts.A starting point to guide you to other authors. For that reason alone, I can't give it 4 stars (Swartz gets 4 stars).

I passed the Exam today and I can say that this book assisted.I believe I would have passed without it, but my score was probably bumped a few points because of it.If you are borderline, it could make the difference between a Pass/Fail.

The final 100 question exam is excellent! They explain the answers in detail. If you can get a 90% or above on the final 100 questions, you've got a shot. ... Read more

The ranks of telecommuters, remote employees, and mobile users are growing every day and their communications needs are expanding just as rapidly. Advancements in remote access technologies allow users to become less dependent on the office and to increase productivity without sacrificing the convenience of direct access to the corporate network. Convenient, secure, and reliable connections are crucial to corporate reliance on remote access. Customers, employees, and partners should connect seamlessly, as if they were in company headquarters. They also must count on the ability to log in and to remain connected at an expected level of performance. Understanding how to deploy remote access services is the first step to realizing the benefits that these services offer but inconsistent performance or denial of service threaten productivity gains. It is critical that these services not only be available but also perform as promised.

Troubleshooting Remote Access Networks helps you understand underlying technologies and gain insight into the challenges, issues, and best practices for supporting remote access networks. This book focuses on the enterprise portion of a remote access network and includes service provider troubleshooting and design information that helps both enterprise and service provider network engineers understand the larger picture of remote access networks. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for Remote Access operations, implementation, and architecture staff alike
Being cited as a supporter of this publication does of course mean that I could have some bias when providing a review. However, knowing and working with him personally, I can honestly say that Plamen and the entire team of contributors that actually deployed and operated Cisco's remote access infrastructure have produced a text of significant value for any engineer designing, deploying, and operating remote access services across various technologies.

Some of the technologies covered such as analog dial and ISDN may seem dated, but one must remember that in many areas these technologies are still widely deployed and of course require ongoing support. And to that end, "Troubleshooting Remote Access Networks" provides the foundation and tools to support those technologies based upon real world experience.

Having been part of the team that initially created Cisco's remote access services, it was a pleasure to see Plamen, Felicia, and the entire staff carry the torch forward and take Cisco's remote access infrastructure to the next level with global deployments and VPN solutions.

The practical expertise that Plamen and the Cisco Remote Access Team built over that time is reflected in this publication, and is invaluable for anyone supporting or designing similar services.

That being said, the only reason I give this reference 4 stars is due to its relative age to the industry. As time moves on, an updated revision that addresses changes in technologies and techniques does become desirable.

But even 5 years following its publication, this reference should be on the shelf of any remote access engineer's library. And if it is already on yours, I bet "Troubleshooting Remote Access Networks" is heavily dog-eared!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for WAN, not great for CCIE
CiscoPress's "Troubleshooting Remote Access Networks" by Nedeltchev is mislabeled. As with their "Troubleshooting IP Routing Protocols" , CiscoPress has labeled this book as part of their `CCIE Professional Development' series - I do not think these books should be considered as necessary for the CCIE.This book does have some merit, and I have found some of the documentation to be extremely valuable at troubleshooting and isolating WAN issues.

The book is broken down into 4 sections - Dial, ISDN, Frame-Relay and VPN.I have been supporting Frame-Relay and ISDN for years (and have been given the unfortunate title of `ISDN guru').This book does an excellent job at describing some little understood issues with each technology. For instance, on page 331, various BRI cause messages from a NI-1 ISDN switch are discussed. On page 499 are given tips/commands on how to troubleshoot an internal CSU/DSU.I also like the discussion on how to use other methods to help isolate an issue starting on page 109 (ping, traceroute and Netcat - yes, Netcat!).This book is mammoth, weighing in at over 850 pages.

There are not that many typos in the book.If you are a WAN network administrator, and you are looking for a book to place on your shelf to help you or your colleagues, you probably can't go wrong with this book.If you are a CCIE, looking to help prepare for the lab, I suggest you save up and buy some extra rack-time with the money.

I give this book 4 pings out of 5:
!!!.!

4-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!! Awesome Book. A must have
WOW!!! If this book isn't in your library, then your library is not complete. This book is a must have for the serious network professionals. Being in the CCIE Professional Development Series should tell you all you need to know about this AWESOME book.

Do you want to know about ISDN? Frame Relay? Dial Services? VPN's? How Remote Access troubleshooting? Then look no further

The first part of the book gives the reader foundational information on telecommunications and the various technologies associated with it. Then you learn about the options that can be deployed for remote access. The options section is good, and it describes the technologies along with the limitations and benefits for each of them. This will help you to make an informed decision on what you should deploy. You are also presented a handy section on management considerations for remote access. It's always nice to know what management might be thinking. The telecommunication chapter is very well done. After reading this chapter your knowledge of this subject will be substantial.

Next you get into the cloud chapter as the author calls it. This chapter describes the components that you would find in the network cloud. The pages in this chapter are good and provide the reader with a wealth of information. This is a very well prepared section that helps the user build a solid foundation. Trust me you'll have to know and use this material in the real world regardless of whether you are on a data, voice or converged network. The components and service provider sections are good for helping complete the readers' knowledge and understanding of a cloud.

The troubleshooting chapter is GOLDEN. You are given general steps and advice to help resolve problems in any type of environment not just remote networks. You are then taken on a review of the DoD and OSI models. They even through in a cool little protocol diagram that maps different protocols all the way from layer 7 to layer 1. I could ramble on and on about this chapter suffice it to say this is arguably the BEST TROUBLESHOOTING SECTION I have ever read!!! Buy the book and checkout this chapter.

Parts II - V of the book gets into the main technologies that can be used for remote access. I really liked the format the author used for these parts of this book. He starts by providing an overview of the technology. Once you have a solid foundation he then takes you into design solutions. After your introduction you are shown practical application of it. Next you are taught how to troubleshoot this specific technology. The next phase that is used to hammer home everything you just read of the last few chapters is a chapter on troubleshooting scenarios. You are walked through various problems complete with commands and screen outputs.
The materials that are presented in parts II - V are just incredible for knowledge of Dial up, ISDN, Frame Relay, and VPNs.

This book is for people that need to have accurate and detailed information on Remote Access. Whether you're looking for foundational skills or need to troubleshoot remote access networks. You will be very happy with this book. After all it is in the CCIE Professional series, which should be enough to buy the book alone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Caffeine and Concentration Essential
I am reviewing Troubleshooting Remote Access Networks (ISBN 1587050765), part of the CCIE Professional Development Series from Cisco Press. This book weighs in at 800 pages, but the font size and subject matter make it feel like well over 1000.Normally, I try to average 50 pages of technical reading a day, but I had trouble getting anywhere close to that. The book is divided into 5 sections.Section 1 covers remote access fundamentals, while sections 2-5 cover Dial, ISDN, Frame Relay, and VPN technologies, respectively. The book is authored by Plamen Nedeltchev, an engineer who worked for Cisco during the development of much of their remote access technology. The problem with this is that it's like discussing photographs with the guy that worked in R&D at Canon. He knows his stuff, but you'd better watch out, lest you be drowned with terminology.

The author does a decent job of explaining the technical concepts, but he has a tendency to get wordy.Maybe I'm having a bad month for cognitive focus, but I find myself "phasing out" while reading this book.If I really concentrate, I can follow the author for a chapter, but trying to hammer out day after day of concentration on this book is really hard.I'd recommend it as a troubleshooting guide or as a desk reference, but as straight ahead CCIE study material, it's too cumbersome.Read a chapter of this book, then go read a section of another CCIE book, then come back here for a few more chapters. That might make this thing easier to take. The book states that the reader should have at least CCNA level skills to read this book.I have to disagree and say that the reader must have passed the BCRAN exam for the CCNP before reading this book. The book is intended to teach troubleshooting, so you'd better know the basics of the technologies and their implementation prior to reading this book. Also, if you're not in the mood for TLA & FLA's (Three and Four Letter Acronyms), then you'd better get in the mood before tackling this book.

All of this may make it sound like I don't like this book. That's not true. When I'm in the right mindset, which is to say that the room is right, and the noise level is right, and I have the right level of caffeine, then I can read a section of this book and learn a LOT about the material that he's trying to convey (he IS an expert, after all).On that note, I have to say that I especially enjoyed the section on VPN technologies, as my personal experience and studies are quite light on the subject up to this point. It really piqued my interest in the subject. So much so that I think one of my next reads will be the Cisco Secure VPN Guide.

I'm reading this book as part of my studies for the CCIE written exam.I'm not sure if I needed this much information prior to the written exam.I'm sure I probably could have gotten by with a re-scan of the BCRAN book, but I'm also sure that I will be coming back to this book again and again during my preparations for the lab exam.

On my 5 ping rating scale, I give it a 3.
!!..!

5-0 out of 5 stars Authority of an Instructor !!!
Dr. Nedeltchev's demonstration of his mastery of the terrain is in no doubt. Like an Instructor, he walks you through the `art' of troubleshooting remote access networks, concentrating on 4 of the most popular remote access types; Dial, ISDN, Frame Relay and VPN. The modular layout of the text makes it an easy read, not just for CCIE candidates but an invaluable reference guide for the practicing network engineer, who is confronted with many of the troubleshooting scenario highlighted in the book on a daily basis. The book is organized into 5 parts.

Section 1 is a must read for everyone interested in Remote Access Network Technologies from the end user customer, planning to procure remote access service/solution to the service provider customer support engineers whose job it is to ensure customer satisfaction and the infrastructure engineers who are faced with ensuring the health of the system. This section quickly lay out the fundamental issues in Remote Access Network technology, as much as can fit in less than 150 pages, and still provide a good feel for the issues at stake.

Chapters 5 to 22 are where the real juice is. The almost 700 pages of text is divided into 4 modules, each dealing with one of Dial, ISDN, Frame Relay and VPN, in that other.

A feature I found very useful is the modular nature of the book, providing easy reference for the information you need. In practice, Engineers may not have to work with all technologies, but still find the book handy as a reference to the technology that interests them as well as a quick guide to troubleshooting that technology.

Chapters 5 through 8 describes dial technology and troubleshooting issues and chapters 9 though 13 explores ISDN technology.

Chapters 14 to 18 is on Frame Relay technology and as is the pattern throughout the book starts with an overview of frame Relay technologyin 14, moving on to design solutions in chapter 15 and configurations in 16. chapter 17 explores the topic of troubleshooting frame relay network detailing specific commands and pointing to specific tools, while chapter 18 reviews some troubleshooting scenarios including new install, mismatched dlci, traffic shaping, ip multicast and even host migration.

The coverage of VPN is quite detailed (chapters 19 through 22) with description of VPN categories, link technologies and a break down of IKE an IPSec technologies providing the ground work for a full chapter on design and configurations which then presented a clear case for the troubleshooting chapter with Cisco equipment as benchmark. Chapter 22looks at some real life VPN troubleshooting scenarios. Of course the application environment is windows. Linux operating systems users of the popular Cisco VPN software will have to get resources from Cisco website.

Like most Cisco press texts, this book has its share of IOS snapshots and scenario examples and lives up to its stated billings "as a guide to understanding tools, commands and methodologies that enable reliable performance of remote access services"

Having this book within reach when dealing with remote access networks is guaranteed to save you time, no matter what stage of the system you may find yourself, from planning though maintenance/support. For aspiring CCIE, I will recommend this as a must have. ... Read more

Product Description
Provides a systematic roadmap to guide candidates in expanding their internetworking knowledge base as well as refining internetwork-issue spottingtroubleshooting & analysis skills.DLC: Electronic data processing personnel Certification.Amazon.com Review
As author Andrew Bruce Caslow so eloquently states, CiscoCertification: Bridges, Routers, and Switches for CCIEs is focusedsolely on providing a structured roadmap to Cisco CertifiedInternetworking Expert (CCIE) certification. At the very least, itwill help you master the portion of certification that pertains toconfiguring, monitoring, and troubleshooting the Cisco equipmentreferenced in the title. A massive volume--the table of contents aloneis 34 pages long--the coverage within ranges from general guidelinesfor port configuration to information on bridging nonroutable trafficto details on navigating the Cisco Internetworking Operating System(IOS).

As is common to this genre, the book is replete withconfiguration commands, diagrams, and tables. However, it maintains amore pragmatic tone than most as each chapter ends with some or all ofthe following elements: a summary, a professional developmentchecklist, references for further study, and a "Can You Spot theIssues?" section containing networking word problems. The answers tothese problems are found in one of the book's appendices. Alsoincluded is a section devoted to test preparation and test-takingtechniques that details the skills assessed during the CCIE exam aswell as commonly encountered testing landmines. An admirable effort, this granular but well-organized tome certainly appears to meet itsstated goal. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For it's time, this book was a 'Must-Have' for the CCIE R&S Lab
"Cisco Certification - Bridges, Routers and Switches for CCIEs" by Caslow and Pavlichenko was admittedly published a few years ago.For it's time, this book was the `must-have' book to learn advanced configurations for the CCIE Routing & Switching lab.The authors are excellent teachers, and are able to explain complex subjects in an easy to read style. To find out what Bruce and Val are up to nowadays - check out their website at NetMasterClass.net.They have foregone writing an updated copy of this book and have instead focused their efforts on preparing top-notch labs to test one's knowledge before walking into the CCIE R&S lab.Still, in spite of this book's age, if you can pick up a copy today, you will not be disappointed.

I give this book 5 pings out of 5:
!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good condition
I received this book within about 2 weeks after my order. It's in near new condition.I am satisfied.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Old
This book is too too old. It's a waste of money...

2-0 out of 5 stars That was then, this is now...
I started my CCIE lab studies with this book in 2000, it was an easy read and I really liked this book, specifically the Frame Relay section which still applies to today's lab. But, I had to put a hold on studies for a while.
I started my CCIE studies again in 2002 and passed the lab in 2003.During that time I glanced at this book for a total of 20 minutes. There are simply so many other books by CiscoPress that are better than this one, although, again, the Frame Relay section very well done. But certain sections, such as switching, token ring, and quite a few others simply don't apply anymore. Also, the Lab exam is so different now, with 3550's, QoS, Multicast galore, that this book falls of the required reading list.
I do think the author did a great job on this book initially, but it needs a facelift of major proportions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Aged, but still a classic.
Caslow and Pavlichenko have written quite possibly the definitive CCIE preparation book.Unlike most books in the field they focus not just on the relevant technologies, but also strategies for getting straight to the heart of the problems you will face both in the written and practical exams.

The second edition is dated now.The written exam has changed as of August '02, with the practical test due to change in November '02, but this does not render the book completely out of date.No CCIE study guide pretends that it can cover the subject completely without other references, and this is no exception. If you keep an eye on the Cisco CCIE blueprint and supplement your reading with more specific tomes on the recent additions to the exam you will find the methodologies in this book become the core of your exam strategy.

The 3rd edition of this book is currently being prepared and should be available by the end of 2002. ... Read more

Product Description
The first section of this guide, Notes From Experience, discusses issues, tricks and approaches to many networking problems. This section attempts to explain "how and why" to do certain things. This guide does not attempt to explain the basics of BGP, OSPF, Frame Relay and other networking topics – there are many references for that. Instead this guide provides useful insights and explanations of the more subtle and complex aspects of networking. The second section of this guide, Study Sheet, is a compilation of many condensed configurations, quick explanations and useful "show" and "debug" commands. This section is appropriate as a quick refresher on various configurations and a good review point as you make your final preparations for the exam. ... Read more
