This comprehensive review and practice package is designed for the latest CCNA 640-802 exams. The two books contained in this package, CCENT/CCNA ICND1 Official Exam Certification Guide, Second Edition, and CCNA ICND2 Official Exam Certification Guide, Second Edition, present complete reviews and a more challenging and realistic preparation experience. The books are updated to cover all the new 640-802 exam objectives, such as security, wireless, IPv6, and troubleshooting.

Please note that while this is the Third Edition of the Library, the two books inside are Second Editions. This is correct, and the editions align differently because of changes in the names of the exams, from the old INTRO and ICND to the new ICND1 and ICND2 formats.

What can you do with the CCNA Official Exam Certification Library?

  • Assess your knowledge with chapter-opening quizzes
  • Review key concepts with Exam Preparation Tasks
  • Practice with hundreds of exam questions on the CD-ROM
  • Learn about more complex topics with over one hour of video training

CCNA Official Exam Certification Library, Third Edition, presents you with an organized test preparation routine through the use of proven series elements and techniques. “Do I Know This Already” quizzes open each chapter and allow you to decide how much time you need to spend on each section. Chapter ending Exam Preparation Tasks sections help drill you on key concepts you must know thoroughly and help increase your speed in answering questions, a difficult hurdle many candidates face on the new exams. Final Preparation chapters guide you through tools and resources to help you craft your final study plan. Special troubleshooting sections help you master the complex scenarios you will face on the exam.

The companion CD-ROMs contain a powerful testing engine with over 400 questions that allow you to focus on individual topic areas or take complete, timed exams. The test engine also includes simulation and testlet questions, and all questions are available in study mode and test mode. The assessment engine also tracks your performance and provides feedback on a chapter-by-chapter basis, presenting question-by-question remediation to the text.

The bonus DVDs contain more than 60 minutes of personal video mentoring from the author focused mainly on the topic of subnetting. These videos help bring difficult subnetting concepts to life and make learning easy.

Well-regarded for its level of detail, assessment features, and challenging practice questions, this completely revised and updated edition provides you with more detailed information and more realistic practice exercises than any other CCNA study guide, enabling you to succeed on the exam the first time.

Best-selling author and senior instructor Wendell Odom shares preparation hints and test-taking tips, helping you to identify areas requiring further study and to improve your conceptual and hands-on knowledge. The material is presented in a concise manner, focusing on increasing your understanding of exam topics and preparing you for the numerous challenges the exams present.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for CCNA students
If you are preparing for the CCNA Exam, this book is the best. I have taken some courses about it, and there were still gray areas of knowledge. the way this book explains them is great. I feel now prepared for the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book and Even Better Boson Engine CD
There are good books that are comparable or even better than these guides out there. However, the practice exam software that comes with the books is what differentiates them from other books. It uses the Boson engine (just as good as Trasncender) and although I would still recommend that you buy the ExSim-Max Exams from Boson to make sure you know everything you need to know, the practice exam that accompanies these 2 books is excellent. I found some errors in a couple of questions but Cisco released many updates that are loaded automatically when you start the engine and the errors were corrected.

I also bought McGraw Hill CCNA Exam 640-802 which also comes with the Boson engine, but the questions are poor compared to the ones that come with the CISCO Press CCNA Official Exam Certification Library. Just to make sure I was prepared, I bought the Boson ExSim Exams and was glad I did. It is loaded on the same engine, so you also have the ones that come with Cisco available together. I got a very good discount because I had the book from McGraw Hill too.

This library has all the topics that you need to study but make sure you know everything very well. If you're not sure, do yourself a favor and buy Transcender or Boson ExSim. It's not just because they help you be prepared for the test format. These tools will not only point out your weaknesses but they will also help you learn as they explain in detail why each answer is or is not correct. You actually learn. Memorizing for CCNA helps very little if it helps at all but Transcender and Boson work like great tutors. Although they are expensive, they are cheaper than taking the test again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent book
I am glad i choosed this book, although I havent finished reading it, I've learn a lot, remembered a lot and trained a lot using this Kit. It is a must to have for anyone pursuing CCNA AND further Cisco Certifications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best service ever!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great books, great author
Just passed the ICND1 640-822 with flying colors and I owe it to this book.Frankly I've got a couple years on the job experience behind me so that is a huge help but this book fills in all the blanks and theory you don't always get (basically the "why" it works not just the how to configure and make it work).

Great book, easy to read for a dry subject matter and highly recommended.Started reading on the ICND2 to upgrade my CCENT to a CCNA and I can tell its going to be a great book also. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA study guide review
This guide is exactly what I needed to study for certification. It fit my learning style and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to have detailed examples and hands on labs when studying. The book arrived in timely manner (although I'm overseas) and perfect condition. Great service.

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA: Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide: Exam 640-802
It is a great book. I like the way Lammle wrote this book. My friend read the book in three weeks and he passed the CCNA.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly as it was described!
I'm very satisfied with the item and the whole transaction. Well recommended seller and would purchase again!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lammel's CCNA Study Guide, 6th edition, review
This book is a required text for a class in a master's program for Systems Engineering. The book is well written, easy to read, and the labs are very worth while.I have not yet scheduled my CCNA exam, but hope that the knowledge gained from this book will provide the knowledge I need to pass the exam.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not good for learning Networking concepts
By reading this book you are NOT going to learn networking. It doesn't explain any concept well, I find it disappointing every time I try to understand a new concept, and open this book to find nothing but a very brief list of defintions. The Odom (Cisco Press) books are much better, even though they are two volumes, but they provide clear explanation of the concepts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Portable Command Guide Book
It's a great book for the networking field. Use it for reference. You will not remember all codes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide
I bought this book for my cisco class and it is a great help, it has everything you need to know for router configuration.

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Portable Command Guide (2nd Edition)
I was very happy with my purchase of this book. The seller' descriptions of this item was spot-on. And I would purchase other items from this seller. Keep up the good work. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff.
It showed up on time. Awesome book. A must have if your in school going for your AAS in Computer Network Administration or studying for your CCNA. Helps tremendously with Subnetting, IP addressing, CISCO commands & a lot more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Reference and Study
I'm finishing up my CCNA studies through the Networking Academy program, and our instructor for the second part of the class strongly recommended this little book to us.At first, I was dubious--it's a 330 page paperback, retailing for $30 in stores. But when I started having some trouble with VLANs, I caved, and am I glad! This is the meat of the information from the two (four, if you're in Academy) big, bulky, heavy Self-Study and Exam Certification guides. It doesn't replace those, but for carrying around to study with, this is extremely useful.

It's the HOW-TO for everything you've learned.Note that it does not cover the WHYs and WHENs of anything. But it's all here.A hefty chapter on subnetting starts it out, covering several different methods. An appendix in the back covers binary/hex/decimal conversions, if that's troubling you.It reviews the differences between crossover and straight cables, and when to use each.Basic configurations, static routing and routing protocols, switching basics, VLANS, VTP, STP, and Router-on-a-Stick form the next two sections, 'Routing' and 'Switching.'Then comes a chapter on Wireless, exclusive to the Networking Academy program and very marketable, despite not being on the CCNA exam.Troubleshooting and general network administration are next. The last few sections deal with WANs: NAT and DHCP, IPv6, PPP and HDLC, Frame Relay, and the very evil Access Control Lists.

But there are also a few things that my classes never really covered.Cisco Discovery Protocol.Security Device Manager.Password recovery.Telnet, SSH, SNMP and Syslogs.System backups. And at the end, ten sheets of ruled paper and five more blank to add any information they left out.

And there are a few things.Redistribution, bane of the CCNA's existence, is not covered at all. There's no index (but an excellent Table of Contents and 'What do you want to do?' section). The print is small, maybe even a little more so than what you'd find in a usual paperback.

So tuck a magnifying glass in the back, write down the info on redistribution, and stick this book in your bag. It's a great study tool for the CCNA exam, a review for the CCNPs, and, I expect, extremely useful for the admin-on-the-job who already has a million things to remember.Use it, and love it, because it makes you not have to carry around the HUGE books. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A short but great CCNA preparation resource
In short an interesting title, exclusively written for the Cisco Network Academy students, who are preparing for the Cisco CCNA 640-802 Certification exam. The author Allan Johnson takes a very broad look at practical way to make you understand the concepts in 31 days in a very concise way.He has emphasized on concepts and terminologies used in Cisco CCNA 640-802 Certification exam in an interesting way which definitely helps you to summarize your learning.

Although the title "31 days before your CCNA Exam" aims at Cisco Network Academy students, but it can be used for the Cisco CCNA 640-802 Certification aspirers who does self study.

The author Allan Johnson divided the title suiting in to 31 chapters, which are so concise you can finish each chapter in an hour. The cream of the title"31 days before your CCNA Exam" is the section called "Exam day and post exam information" which gives the CCNA Certification aspirers guidelines on what to expect after the completion of exam as well as what they should do if they fail to pass the exam on first attempt. One more section that I really liked is "CCNA Skills review and practice" which helps you to practice the CCNA skills which includes most of the CCNA 640-802 exam configurations skills in one topology, which covers topics like VLAN configuration, frame-relay configuration, inter vlan routing, EIGRP,VTP, port security , STP. You can practice those topologies either on Cisco Packet Tracer or GNS3 graphical network simulator.

Overall the title "31 days before your CCNA Exam" is a true gem, but cannot be a only source for passing CCNA 640-802 exam, this title is good for the some one who is looking for quick reference on CCNA 640-802 exam topics in an well organized way. I thank Cisco Press and Jamie in particular for providing me the copy of "31 days before your CCNA Exam"

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT purchase!
I LOVE this book!It contains a pullout 31 day calendar in the front, with a few topics per day for study.Inside the book is not a bunch of questions ( so DON'T expect this to be just another run of the mill practice exame book ), the author provides an encapsulated review on each topic, followed by EXAMPLES of how to do what was just reviewed. *It's a 31-day, easily readable, condensed perfectly, textbook!(The perfect COMPANION to your CCNA Practice Exam books)

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Review Guide
This book is good for guiding your review for your CCNA test. This is not adequate for learning the material but provides good guide for review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great condensed review for ccna
Basically takes all four ccna books and compacts them into 375 pages. A good way to study for the cert and review topics learned recently. Would not be suitable for one who has little knowledge of the ccna concepts since it briefly covers major topics such as Spanning Tree and routing protocols. All in all a great value and just what I was looking for--a review of all topics covered in the ccna curriculum.

5-0 out of 5 stars 31 days CCNA
The book arrived in great condition (new and wrapped) within 2 Days.

4-0 out of 5 stars Do not see how anyone could rate it 5 stars, but...
This book is full of great information.I have received a computer networking with Cisco emphasis certificate degree at a community college. This is more of a review for me before I take the CCNA.I must say I enjoy the way the author presents the information, but this book does have faults.I have read the 5 star reviews, and it is alarming to me that most people have not picked up on the mistakes in the book.I understand no one is perfect, but when preparing for an exam I do not want to see typos and misprints in my study guide.Although the mistakes were not major, it still alarmed me and made me question the reliability of some information.

Overall, everything was great, but we will see when I go to take the actual CCNA.If I pass this book will get a 5 star rating regardless of the flaws it has.The purpose of the book is to pass the CCNA and if I can do that with the help of this book, then who I am to rate it any less than perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for studying CCNA
A very comprehensive and well organized CCNA study guide that answers all of the questions you will see on the CCNA test. Also comes with a CD with three separate practice test that you can take. The writing is fresh and interesting and the authors keep things moving along. If you are only going to read one book before taking your CCNA, get this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book!!!
A lot of mistakes and not just typos but misconceptions. For example, on page 372 3rd paragraph from the top: "All devices on the LAN see the ARP request, but the target device is not in the local network. So, it does not see the ARP request. However, the LAN gateway (that is , the router), like all devices in the LAN, does see the ARP request. It recognizes that the ARP request is for an IP address that is located in a remote network."

So, from this text we can get that a PC from which we want to send a request to a remote network doesn't need to know the default gateway IP address. Why? Because the router will recognize (by itself) through ARP broadcast that this request is for the remote network!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Guide and Desk Reference!
I have pretty much read through this exam guide cover-to-cover and must say this is a solid book for preparing for the CCNA exam. I have 10+ years experience in the IT field and I am using this guide to polish up my Cisco skills and earn my CCNA. This book also doubles as a nice desk reference when not studying for the test. At about 1000 pages (Holy Bible size and weight ;-), the book contains a wealth of Cisco and networking knowledge, lots of practice test questions as well.I recommend it for dummies and non-dummies alike!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!!
I've read a bit more than halfway through it so far. This book is very informative and well written. It's a perfect study guide for Cisco CCNA certification. It also contains a lot of information about Cisco products, networking best practices and advice, a lot of tips and tricks (this guy obviously knows what he's talking about).

I consider myself a beginner/intermediate in networking and so far, it's been quite easy to understand the concepts explained. Plus all this info will probably be useful as reference ongoing. It even covers newer stuff like those sexy Cisco IP phones that you see on all TV shows now.

I like the way the author explains things, for example I have heard my colleagues speak about EtherChannel and port trunks and VLANs... all this sounded like rocket science to me, until I read an example that compares EtherChannel and port trunks and VLANs to a freeway overpass in the VLAN chapter. Now I get it!!! Also, the diagrams in the book make it very easy to understand some of the more advanced stuff.

This book has been very helpful so far. It helps me understand networking stuff that felt intimidating before. I am quite confident about the CCNA test now. I'll probably use the tip and tricks and best practices ongoing as a reference. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent networking introduction - a must have.
I bought this book for a Cisco Academy class. It is a textbook, so it goes deeper into technical aspects than the well known CCNA/CCENT exam preparation books, such as Odom's or Lammle's. Of course I recommend them all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Seller not in the U.S.
This seller (unknown to me at purchase) is not in the United States. He is apparantly in the U.K. and it's taking more than 38 days to deliver my book. Well see that is a problem, because I need this text book for a class I am in, by the time the text book gets here it'll be mid-term time and I'll have already failed the course. No where on this guys seller profile does he say he's in the U.K. or out of the United States, so now I am stuck with a $55 book that will be delived 38 days too late......THANKS AMAZON

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed!!!
I am taking the 1st CCNA Cisco course and this was a required book. My book store sold out of this book within the first day of selling it, and in my city, no other book store offered this book. I looked around, and ordering from Barnes & Noble, which doesn't readily have to book in store, would take over a week! I ordered the book here, and got it the next day!! I am very satisfied with my order. The book even came with a CD, which isnt mentioned in the description. I thought I was going to have to look around for the CD, what a pleasant surprise! This is an excellent book, very well written, and very well organized. I can always find exactly what I am looking for. I recommend this book! I also recommend the CISCO CCNA COMMAND GUIDE, for $30 it's well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cisco Network Fundamentals
I ordered Network fundamentals text for my first networking class.. It is in excellent condition, and I received it before I expected it..

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for the first CCNA class
I got this book because I don't like to read books online. The online material for this class is certainly good but I think it's good to have something you can hold in your hands.I find the book is fairly well written with only a few typographical errors.I have mainly been reading the book and have been acing all the exams.Of course, I've read the chapters a few times apiece. ... In addition, the simulator includes extensive support of show commands that help you diagnose and resolve network problems in labs specially designed to enhance troubleshooting skills, a key component of the CCNA exam.

Well-regarded for its level of detail, assessment features, challenging practice questions, and hands-on labs,  this value-priced package provides you with more detailed information and more realistic practice exercises than any other CCNA study guide, enabling you to succeed on the exam the first time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great books but there is a big caveat!
I am going through the books at my own pace and enjoying them. They are very informative, concise and add a touch of humor to break up the potential dullness of reading technical materials.

The thing to be concerned with is the simulator.I had the same problem as another reviewer did.The activation code on the back of the Network Simulator did not work.I tried contacting Pearson and they were not willing to help.Don't even bother calling them for support.I contacted InformIT like the other gentleman did and they were able to email me a new code.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the full package I expected
I'm just going to write this review off the top of my head, so I apologize in advance for any rambling & lack of coherency. First off, this boxed set is basically the regular Cisco ICND1 & ICND2 books (that you can buy separately, on their own, or together in the Amazon listing titled "CCNA Official Exam Certification Library (Exam 640-802), Third Edition (Containing ICND1 and ICND2 Second Edition Exam Certification Guides)") in a box with an accompanying bonus CD. So all you really get in addition to buying the books separately is a CD that contains what are essentially practice labs in a router sim. When bundled together, Amazon sells the books for $37.79 but this item is $125.99 (at the time of this review, at least), so you're paying about a $90 premium for just the extra simulator CD. In hindsight, me buying this item was a bad idea. I'm going to review the bonus CD you get and leave my review of the books in the item listing for that particular book so look there if you want my humble opinion. As for the CD, I really didn't find it useful and actually quit using it about halfway through my ICND1 studying. On the CD you get a ton of labs in a practice simulator. The labs are basically a run-through of the problems in the book, so if you find actually doing the problems instead of just reading about them that much more helpful, then good for you. Otherwise, they're just a rehashing of what's in the book. Wasn't worth it for me, at least. The simulation software could have been made better, as well. You could not resize the window and it's pretty small to begin with. Also, you had to open the instructions for each sim in a separate PDF file, so be prepared to print out a LOT of instructions (about 3 pages per sim, and there are a lot of sims), or get a second monitor that you can flip to portrait mode.Simply clicking back & forth from the sim to the pdf windows was extremely annoying.Additionally, the Boson sim software that comes packaged with each individual book actually has a much more friendly interface that mimics what you'll find on exam day. Shame on Cisco Press for letting a third-party have sim software that mirrors the exam sim software but your own software doesn't....Most of the sims are very short & quick which also is somewhat annoying given the process of reading the problem in the PDF and then using the software. To just learn the basic commands, I would recommend that you Google & download Cisco's Packet Tracer which is basically the lab simulator without any pre-planned problems. In a sort of summary - the Boson software that comes packaged with each individual book is a much better product. It is much more similar to the actual exam simulator and is a lot easier to use.It doesn't have nearly the same number of problems on this bonus CD, but it covers a decent amount of the material and should give you enough practice with the look & feel of the Cisco IOS.Maybe if this boxed set was only $20 more than the two books combined, I would recommend it, but I think the $90 extra is just absurd for the quality of what you get. Oh - and don't buy any used copies of this boxed set, either. The bonus CD comes with an activation code that can (supposedly) only be used once.If the person selling the used copy activated it, you could be out of luck on it altogether. Not worth the risk in my opinion. As a side note - the books themselves are quite good although they only give you about 10 practice questions for each chapter (not nearly enough). Also, the Boson practice exam (in each individual book) was pretty tough & covered some material not in the book at all (kind of stupid since you're supposed to take it after reading the book). Anyway, there you go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way better than that other book
The reading was comprehensive. The simulator and the exam sim is a must even if you have experience, it gets you thinking in terms of the way and the what they will ask on the exam. The sims are harder than the ones on the exam. The practice exam questions/sims are not really written like the real exam but are setup to test you in a number of ways the question may actually be framed.

Overall, I thought it was more in depth than the exam. For instance multi-area OSPF, I don't think I had a question about OSPF let alone multi-area(I'm not saying don't study it!!!). Of course it's Cisco, so they test you on their own protocol. EIGRP, switching and bit-flipping is a must.

I didn't really read the ICND1 book, I just referred to a few chapters a couple of time, but it seemed OK too.
The 640-802 is heavy on the ICND2 info.

Yes...I passed 943

I'm thinking of getting the Boson CCNP Lab simulator. Any comments on that? Should I just build my own lab?

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good product
Overall this set of books, practice exams, and simulators prepared me pretty well for the exam. All but 1 or 2 of my exam questions looked familiar so I'm convinced this package covered all of the major topics.

The practice test questions were a little bit harder than my exam questions, which is good.Several of the test sim's were easier than the practice ones, though two of them were of similar complexity. If you can do the labs and the practice sims in this package, then you are in good shape for the exam.Since the sims are such a substantial portion of the exam score, this product could be improved with a few more sim questions.

The books contained 2 practice question errors and a couple of typos, but not nearly as bad as the CCNA 1 book by Stephen McQuerry which had numerous practice question errors.

I advice everyone to purchase at least one other quality practice exam package so you don't take the risk of depending on a single product for an expensive exam. There's nothing substantial missing from this package, but utilizing one other practice exam package might give you a little line of questioning for the same material. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what you need for Cisco Cert!
This book is an easy read unlike other Cisco books which put you to sleep in 15 minutes or less.Written extremely well, and did the job of getting me my cert.Who can complain about that?

2-0 out of 5 stars Misses the mark...
I would say this book and the CCNA Security Lab Manual covered about 70-80% of what is on the exam. I would highly recommend spending some time in some ASA books, Security+ and reading up on remote access technologies. The old CCNP guides cover that pretty well.

I found incorrect IP addresses and a lack of real world information in this book.Overall a serious disconnect between the creators of the exam and authors of the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Find another book
As other reviewers have noted, this book's quality is very uneven. It contains many typographical errors, some of which completely alter the meaning of a given sentence (e.g., referring to asymmetric encryption when it means symmetric encryptions). The authors repeat themselves often, and the quality seems to decline as the book progresses. The chapter on firewalls is absolutely dreadful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not much of a study guide
The book explains very poorly the Site-to-Site VPN topic (chapter 5), which practically forces you to check other sources for better explanation. Also, the Fundamentals of Cryptography (chapter 4) is terrible if you really want to learn cryptography. Chapter 4 is mostly a review guide, and therefore intended for people who have already studied Cryptography in another decent book (say: Bruce Schneier's "Applied Cryptography"). Hence an induced fear of other chapters not covering exactly everything one needs to know to pass the exam!

2-0 out of 5 stars Redundant, all over the place, typos
Let me just say this....This book is overkill. It is just words. It has redundant information in all the wrong areas, misspellings, incorrect IP addresses, and one other pet peeve of mine is this. When you have illustrations, try to have them on the same layout as the description. It is so difficult to read about an example and have to turn the page to view it back and forth - back and forth. I also found that most of the time the descriptions of the illustrated examples were vague as well. I have read Wendell Odom's Intro and ICND set as well as the ICND1 ICND2 set. I have read Jeremy Cioara's (CBT Nuggets Trainer) CCNA-Voice book about halfway and all of these Cisco Press books were well written. My head hurts from trying to obtain the CCNA-Sec knowledge in this one. I am very disappointed. I have started reading Implementing Cisco IOS Network Security (IINS): (CCNA Security exam 640-553) (Authorized Self-Study Guide) by Catherine Paquet, and it is a much better written book.Visit [...] for others commenting on this book.I am very surprised Cisco allowed this book through.

I give it 2 stars because of the Boson Testing sim on CD... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Quick Reference Book
I wanted a quick reference guide that was complete enough to actually program routers and switches ... not theory. 90% of the time I have a question, I can get it answered from this book in less than a minute. So, five stars from me.

No guide will be perfect for everyone. This is not a textbook and not for learning. Great lightweight reference and for review of a topic. Good style and clean layout, but not exciting. The Index in the back of the book WORKS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference guide
This is book is a great book to reference to when you need assistance with CLI commands. It has tremendously helped at work and also while at school. I definitely recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Todd Lammle's IOS Commands
Lammle's stated objective is to help the reader prepare for and pass the difficult CCNA exam. This book expands a bit on that objective. He states in the introduction that this is supplementary material. It's written to assist the student in understanding the line of thought behind the technology.
I found that quite useful. The CCNA is a rigorous exam; those who pass it have a pretty good understanding of the concepts and protocols. But "real world" practice is a trickier thing, especially NAT, and Lammle's book concisely tackles those issues of keeping a network running. He clearly discusses the "why". I'm keeping the book on my desk as a reference work beyond just exam prep. It's money well-spent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, but for a Cisco Product Expected More
I like another reviewer bought the book as required material for a course.I already earned a CCNA through personal study and the use of other Cisco Press study materials. The CD contained is useless unless you have access to a Packet Tracer environment because the only thing contained on it are PT scripts (not even a pdf copy to carry on your eReader). The content is very superficial on the protocols covered (only mentions IS-IS by name) with little to no additional information on it.Sample configurations covered are limited to the minimum necessary to enable the various protocols.

If your looking for a product which will contribute to an already basic knowledge of routers and routing protocols, there are other more complete products available. If you don't know even the basics of Cisco IOS commands and routing protocols, it will provide you a good, but very high level overview.

5-0 out of 5 stars Routing Protocols
Very good condition for a used book. Quick service. Very much satisfied with the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Routing Protocols and Concepts (Book w/CD)
I purchased this book because I was forced to as a textbook for my Networking course with Devry University. I would never have spent money on this product otherwise. Why? Because first of all I am an avid reader, technical, recreational, educational - all kinds of material - and I hate printed material that is set in a font that is "itty-bitty" for people with AMAZING VISION. I don't have amazing vision and this book is hard to read as all the Cisco Press literature I've encountered so far because of the small typeface and point-size.

The book content is okay, not great, typical for an electronics technical book. The visual aids are a bit legacy and boring. I would rate the graphics and visual aid resources in this product ancient. The price of the product matches what you get inside the covers however so what's to complain about unless you are paying top-dollar for the best?

A bad point about the resources that come with the book; CD and Packet Tracer activities, they are worthless unless you have access to a Cisco Networking Academy server to run the activities on. This access comes from being enrolled in a course which provides that key and Devry doesn't. The content of the CD is wretched and can be obtained for free on the Internet. I don't understand why Cisco wasted the plastic providing the CDs with the book. The most useful content on the CD is the Packet Tracer Activity files and those are worthless unless you have access to the Cisco Networking Academy servers which I mentioned earlier. The CD contains the Packet Tracer Activity files; Taking Notes (a text file of chapter objectives), IT Career Information, and Lifelong Learning in Networking - a Cisco self-promo ditty. As I said before; why press all this plastic for that yuck when the big thing today is GO GREEN.

The book covers the salient points about Static Routing, Dynamic Routing Protocols, Distance Vector Routing Protocols, RIP, VLSM and CIDR, EIGRP, Link-State Routing Protocols, and OSPF. You will get little visceral networking education from this book alone and I would caution against purchasing it as a stand-alone textbook. You get no lab experience on the protocols discussed and with the routers and other physical equipment that are exercised within the virtual laboratory using the Packet Tracer Activity. Devry has us using Element K labs which do not follow this textbook and it is like learning about cooking pasta from two different cookbooks - one written in German and the other in Chinese.

The books title is generically inclined in subject context (Routing Protocols and Concepts) but the perspective of all that is taught in the book is through the operation of Cisco devices. You have to do any translation to other equipment in the networking world using your own initiative. The virtual labs work with specific devices and the operating systems implemented on the devices are not generic. All of the CCNA books talk about the Cisco IOS (Internetwork Operating System) because these books deal with their devices. Cisco does not own the World Wide Web and all of its architecture though so your getting an education on Cisco products for the most part. If that is what you are after then you have one on the proper tools with this book to get a Cisco CCNA certification.

All in all the book provides a great deal of good information on the subject matter but the fact that you cannot work any of the labs activities is sort of like getting half-educated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth while your money when going for the CCNA certification
I've seen cbtnuggets video's from the author and was impressed by the way he makes even complicated material clear to the watcher. I think the author has the capability to explain stuff in a way that you really understand what is happening. For that reason I bought this exam training book and it didn't disappoint me at all. Especially the study mode is extremely helpfull on your way to mastering the exam material. Though the questions are not as difficult as in some of the other test exams it gives you a good insight in whether you've understood the material and on what material you need to spent extra time and effort. All in all a great book, worth while the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid preparation tool for a network professional
Reviews are always a bit subjective, but probably even more so with certification material like this book. I feel that this was a very effective book in my case so thats a 5 * to me.

First of all the CCNA Exam Cram assumes that you are involved in networking and your interest in obtaining certification, therefor the concentrate on giving you the Cisco specific information you need to pass. The biggest thing to recommend this series is what they are not.

The most popular book in the CCNA prep field seems to be the Lammle book which is 1000 pages and is really a time waster for someone who has been involved in networking for a few years. For instance Todd Lammle would say "Pay attention because this is very important"and then launch into 7 pages on how basic IP networking works. The experienced reader is then obligated to read through all of that looking for new information since Todd said pay attention, but then there is nothing new for someone who is in the field. Lammle's approach is valuable for someone with little experience or someone coming over from server admin, but the sheer bulk of Lammle (and the two Cisco press books at 700 pages each) make it difficult for the experienced student to just pick out the material that will be relevant to them.

In contrast Exam Cram CCNA (not this questions book) flags particular material as "Exam Tips" in a boxed sections and indicates that some material is "Highly Testable". In my experience with the exam they were exactly right- the type of material they flagged was exactly what was on the exam.

Here is the biggest reason for my recommendation of Exam Cram- the questions are hard enough to be useful to the student. The biggest problem in passing the CCNA Exam is know at what level you should be preparing. On a scale of difficult from 1-10 (devious) the questions in Exam Cram are pitched at 6-8 level. The Lammel book's questions are at a 4. The Actual Cisco exam is a 5-7.5. So even though Exam Cram is probably a bit more difficult than the actual exam it will prepare you for the multiple correct answer questions which can be tricky and for the indirect way Cisco tests your knowledge of some of the skills. For instance, Lammle might ask what a "desirable" mode is in trunking and give you 4 definitions to pick from, while the cisco exam will give you a interface config and will ask you how the switch port will behave based on some settings for a neighboring port.

Exam Cram also covers the following areas better than Lammle- STP designated port process, Wireless BSS/ISS and channel overlap, Security, IPv6. If you just followed Lammle there will probably be questions on your exam that you could not answer. In particular I had about 4 questions on STP designated ports that could not have been answered based on Lammle's treatment.

A word about the exam engine- I could suggest several improvements. It lets you test several different ways including a pop up display of the correct answer and a reasonably good discussion of the incorrect answers. This is very useful to the student. However the the exam scoring does not break down your score by book chapter, so you'll have to do that for yourself. The simulator engine is, as others have noted, atrocious as a simulator- there is no defending it as that.However- the fact that it sucks as a simulator doesnt mean that it isnt useful.

The exam engine will give you a scenario to configure, just like on the CCNA exam- for instance add ip's to a serial link, configure the link for rip v2 and advertise connected networks. The way the simulator engine works is it will prompt you for what subtask you are on and will only accept commands for that subtask before allowing you to go on. There is no auto complete and you can't use ? to see available commands at all. And there are no abbreviations allowed by the parsing engine. You must type "enable" and "configure terminal", no "en", "conf t". Ok this obviously sucks as a simulator- but as something that prepares you for the exam it works. If you can confidently configure things in the Exam Cram engine you will have no problem getting it done during the Cisco exam. Sometimes people get a little too comfortable hitting tab and ? and never really memorize the commands- that can cost you when you are in a timed test.

Another advantage of Exam Cram Questions is that it is a slim book that you can easily keep on you to peruse if you are at a sub shop and have some time. You cant really do that with a fat book like Lammle.

Summary- If you have been in networking for several years and are comfortable with subnetting and routing concepts go with Exam Cram book. You may want to do some additional reading in IPv6 as well. If you are coming to networking with little background or as a server admin use Lammel and at the very least buy Exam Cram Questions. You also should probably use the Cisco Press books for their chapters on VTP, STP, Wireless and IPv6.

Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars really good questions
I've read 10-15 pages of review. I've taken ccent and got 60%. These question on dead on. There not exactly on the test but the idea's on dead on. I wished I've read this before taken the test!! haha. So far it's really good.

4-0 out of 5 stars CCNA exam review
This book covered all areas of the CCNA exam. The questions were an excellent review and the explanations of the correct and incorrect answers helped identify the areas requiring more study.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont buy digital version
This book has solid content and realistic CCNA questions. However, do NOT buy the digital version as I have (on my iphone using the Kindle app).In the digital version, half of the questions are cut off at the bottom of the page.Be sure to just by the hard copy or use an "actual" kindle. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A nice summary and overview of the exam
I'm a little disconcerted to read the negative reviews; I still haven't taken the test yet and it's worrisome that there are mistakes in this book that I may not even notice, since I'm a noob.

I'm part of the way through and really appreciate how well topics are organized and succinctly summed up. I've taken a CCNA course at our local university extension program, I have some old routers to play on, and a couple of other Lammle books. I do think that the CCNA study guide by Lammle (I have the 5th edition) is full of helpful info, but not great for people new to the field. I was rather lost until I took a class.

I think the Exam Cram book is great to give you a broad overview on everything CCNA related that you may have studied elsewhere, and a good review for topics you may not be completely clear on. It's also a quick and easy read, and portable... unlike the huge Lammle guide!

2-0 out of 5 stars I agree with Uncle Joe: a half-baked book
I agree with reviewer Uncle Joe.There are simply too many errors in this book. The errors range from minor typographical errors to bungled command line examples to entire paragraphs which present topics in the most confusing manner possible. At $30 - $40, that's inexcusable.I've noticed that my PMP book from Exam Cram is even more messed up, and thus I will probably be avoiding Exam Cram books in general going forward.

2-0 out of 5 stars Third Edition
The 16 chapters are full of detailed specifics needed to pass the CCNA without being too wordy. The authors discussed most topics with detail that gave command line and topology examples. However there were also a few topics that weren't given as much attention. For example the RSTP enhancements, port security, and route summarization. The first half of chapter 15 repeats the first half of chapter 7 (the Frame Relay section) and even uses the same end of chapter questions. Chapter 17 provides an example network that needs to be configured. Most of the end of the chapter review questions were useful. A few chapters had wrong answers to questions or were completely missing diagrams. The book includes two practice exams.

The measure up CD had the same questions as the practice exams in the book. There are also router simulations that were similar to the scenarios in Chapter 17. I did find the measure up CD useful. The router simulations were decent because they asked to have more than just a serial interface configured with an IP address.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't use unless you like a challenge
I last got my CCNA in 2003, and was looking to recertify. Since the test has changed a fair bit over the years, I simply got an exam cram book. I suppose the glaring errors, mistaken diagrams that don't agree with the expected quiz answers, and other mistakes are a test in and of themselves: spot the sloppy mistakes that made it past editing, and that will prove to yourself how well you understand the material. The glaring mistakes on the quiz in Chapter 12 alone made me put down the book, and seriously think about getting another one. Especially sad, given that this is the third edition.

A shame, because I've been a big, enthusiastic fan of Exam Cram in the past.

2-0 out of 5 stars dissapointed
I just took my 640-802 and failed by 7 points... I feel as though I would have done better with some other guide. I have some major complaints. For one and this is a big one, the test pool is to small, you only get 150 test questions so after you take the exams a few times you basicly know the answers. The formating on som simple tests don't even fit the screen! the simulators are not much of a simulator at all.. You have to type everything out no short hand. All of the errors it's terrible. I spent alot of time trying to figure what i'm doing wrong on the chapter tests only to find out the questions are wrong or the ip address is wrong or they show you a diagram of what looks like a linksys router and your suppose to know that sometimes it is a switch and sometimes it is a router, interfaces inproperly labeled. I'm rambling but it is to prove a point. it really seems like the book is thrown together. the first mistake is on the second page where it says the 640-801 test costs 125.. i don't know about you but I'm interested in passing the 640-802. find something else, you will thank me oh yeah and if your reading this book already i have one thing to say COMEBACK2009 your going to need it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best ever CCNA book
The Author is a wise professional writer; there is neither redundancy in this book, nor it's over summarized. in other words, you cannot miss one page and you won't get bored.. it's very concise and the auther clarifies ideas and makes it to the point just to take you to the Exam overly confident if you have already read the whole book and worked out all written labs & review questions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as Good as the Ones Before...
First of all let me say that I have used Todd's books in the past. I held CCNP and CCDP but had allowed them to expire. So I'm starting back over and having experience with Todd's books in the past I thought I'd buy this one then go take the test. I have no doubt after reading it I can pass the test. To be honest I could most likely pass it right now. I've had the book a a little over a week and am about 1/3 of the way through it. After finding yet another error, I thought I'd come here to post a review. Parts of this book are just painful to read. The grammar is so bad it hurts. Then instead of than, possesive that shouldn't be, plural that should be singular and many others. Here is an example - "...by default, there's may or may not be a password set."There are two to three errors like that per chapter and it left me wondering if anybody proof reads his work. I am guilty of making typing mistakes myself. The better I get at typing my fingers seem to have a mind of their own and I'm not aware of some of the mistakes I make as my fingers fly over the keyboard. I'm not publishing a book though. The mistakes like that make Todd appear to be well... not extremely intelligent. The subject matter itself is just ok. I guess for CCNA and an introduction it will suffice but some of it is watered down and some of it it seems that he falls shy of stating what should be stated ( I have 12 years of experience with Cisco and working as a network engineer as well as an administrator for ISP's and ASP's which leads me to make that statement ).His style is also a just a hair too relaxed: "Hey dude, don't sweat it. We'll cover that neato stuff in later chapters." If you just want to pass the test, I have no doubt this book will get you there. If you want to pass the test and be competent on the job, read this and the Cisco Press book. I was very happy with my six previous books by Todd but this one is not up to par with his work in the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive CCNA REVIEW
The book is not only a sure thing as far as covering all the material on Cisco's CCNA, but my and my fellow Network Academy class mates plan on using it as a comprehensive desk reference.

I'm very satisfied with this book this is all you need to pass the CCNA

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect!
This version of Todd's CCNA study guide is almost perfect, I've used all five. But there are small copy editor errors throughout, including those in the Virtual Lab labs. And when he says in the Tip on page 712 that if you are cramming for the Composite 640-802 exam you can skip this next section, don't do it! There are answers to 3 exam questions on the next page. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I am constantly on the go and I like to keep my mind fresh while I'm studying for the CCNA exam. This product provides a quick and easy way for me to review.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ummm... These Aren't Flashcards
Although the electronic flashcard software is versatile, there are no physical flashcards in this package. There is a paperback book with several questions per page, but the pages are cheap paper and aren't even perforated. This is flashcard software and a quizbook. If you want physical flashcards look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Study Guide
I bought this for my husband who is studying for his certs. His review, "really, really, really good."

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
This text is loaded with information that will help you pass the CCNA exam. After sitting on the exam, I don't feel that the practice questions were anywhere near the level on the actual exam. However, if you know these flash cards...you should have no problems passing the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for your CCNA Exam
This is a question and answer book -- absolutely PACKED with information and questions concerning your CCNA exam. The questions are jumbled nicely throughout the book. Each question is backed up on the reverse side of the page with the answer(s). It is exactly what the title says...they are FLASH CARDS (flash pages). Being able to review your answer and get it immediately makes it extremely vital to the learning process. You are immediately rewarded with the right answer, or you immediately research wrong answers to reinforce your knowledge. Anyone studying for thier CCNA exam, or even thier CCENT, will know how difficult and exhausting it can be, with all the information and redundancies of meanings and devices. Let's face it, it's very overwhelming. This is very much a MUST HAVE. This book WILL help you tremendously if you are going for your Certification. It's all part of practice, practice, practice, review, memorize, etc. Big Help/10-Star!!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Networking Textbooks
This book is not very user friendly for stand-alone usage and I would not have purchased it if not obligated to in order to comply with university requirements. I was not happy with the paper quality for it made turning the pages difficult as they tend to stick together. This textbook is intended to be properly used in conjunction with the Cisco Networking Academy curriculum and does not support learning the content without the other materials provided by the Cisco CCNA training.

I felt that both the glossary and the index are skimpy and could be more comprehensive. I had trouble finding subject matter that was in the book but not listed in the glossary or index.

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA
Boiler plate information and I mean nuts and bolts, one should consider buying the workbook and Packet Tracer 5.0 (or later) to fully benefit from the text. A great prep tool for a portion of the CCNA exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for over seas shipper
This was pretty good order for over seas shipper, only needed to keep customer updated on shipping status.

3-0 out of 5 stars So So
great labs, but too many review questions when the answers are not there, or online to check yourself. Typically we are adults in this class, answers would only help be sure we are not closing the book with the wrong answer written in, and not knowing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for Labs and review!
The Routing Protocols and Concepts Labs and Study Guide book has been really helpful for me. As a NetAcad student, I found myself going back and rereading each section online to remember the concepts I learned. This book helped me reinforce my concepts and remember the material covered in this course. With fill-in-the-blanks,matching, and study guides in every chapter, I was able to remember all that I learned. There are also a lot of labs for each chapter, which helped me improve my troubleshooting skills and increase my knowledge. The topologies of the labs were different than the ones you find in the original online NetAcad course, so you get more practice too! You also get a CD with this book which has all the labs and packet tracer files. I brought this book to help me review my vocabulary, practice labs, and get more troubleshooting experience, and this book does just that! I'm satisfied with my purchase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable
Good insight into both CCENT and CCNA.

The book from my point of view is not for people that don't have a history in the field of Information Technology. The reason towards my opinion originates from the constructive introductions of the book. The books is self explanatory, and the author does a great job when introducing each chapter. However the book simply dips really deep into the concepts, which is really good for a person that understands the concepts naturally (Not by recently memorizing)...

At the end of the line the book is the best out because it gives great comparisons to the real world, and a thorough explanation of each concept. Plus it includes a video tutor, and PDF version of the book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me.
Passed my CCENT exam with an 890-something (need 804 out of 1000 to pass), using only this book, so it worked for me. My previous experience is limited to CompTIA Network+ certification and I have no background in Cisco products. Now, for the book - I would recommend it. Very easy to read and well-thought out and written. I did find it funny that some of the screenshots were from many, many years ago so it's obvious the author is re-using material from old versions (but why rewrite something if you don't have to?).There are two CDs included - one in the very front of the book, one in the very back. Don't ask me why they didn't put both together. The first CD was a lot of subnetting (which I didn't need since I previously learned it through Lammle's excellent Network+ teachings). The second CD contains the Boson sim/practice exam software. This software is actually great and I can now see why Boson sells extra study products separately for a much higher price. Included in the Boson CD is about 160 or so practice questions (including a few sims). The software provides you with answers/explanations to many problems and even has a link to that particular part of the book (in PDF form) so you can review what you got wrong. This kind of backfires in a few spots, though, because some of the Boson material isn't covered in the text. This is to be expected when the software is made by a third-party that uses its own materials to create the text. So, you'll get something wrong, open that part of the book to see why you don't remember seeing that particular thing at all, and still not be able to find it because it isn't in the text to begin with. That is a minor aside, and it doesn't detract from the quality of the material, but if you use the software as a practice exam when your studying is done you may get an artificially lower score because it covers some material you haven't studied. And, yes, I know, the real test will have things you haven't studied as well, but in my opinion the practice test should see how much you remember from studying the book, and sometimes it doesn't.The Boson software actually does an excellent job of mimic-ing the look & feel of the actual exam, so you get a good heads up that way.One note for purchasers of used copies - the Boson software includes an activation code that requires you to register with Boson to download the software. Fine for the first purchaser of the book, but the second purchaser may find that he can't activate the software & download his practice exam!In sum, I recommend the book and am using Odom's ICND2 book to study for completing my CCNA track.Ah - one other warning - as of writing this, Amazon sells this book for about $26.You can buy this book combined with the ICND2 book for about $38 from Amazon, so if you are planning on tackling both tests it would be in your financial interest to purchase the two books in the bundled option instead of separately. The link for the bundle is

[...]

**edit** forgot to mention that I didn't like the fact that the book only has about 10 or so practice/review questions for each chapter. Would it have really been that hard to come up with a few more?I also used CBT Nuggets in my studying and would recommend that as a supplement to this book. I listened to it in my car on my 1-hour commute (one way) to work each day.Good luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough but dry
This book is very thorough but it can be difficult to process if you're not from IT originally. It's a heavy read...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good to go
I got exactly what I asked for with a few other things Ill go and destroy this test.:-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This Book has really given me a lot of information and prepared me for taking the CCNA exam. since reading it, I have become more knowledgable in cisco networks. ... Read more
