4-0 out of 5 stars IPSec is difficult and the discussion rambles
I have not taken the test yet, so whether or not this book achieves a passing goal for me remains to be seen. But, the section on IPSec could use some TLC.For example, page 392 refers to diagram 5-14 and the "4 ipsec squares" and the diagram promptly shows 5 squares. Are there 4 or are there 5?There's a section on IPSec Framework, a section on IPSec Protocol Framework. What's the difference between the 2 sections? I'm a top down learner and need to start with the big picture and I didn't get that the first time through the discussion on IPSec.I found myself flipping back and forth.IKE seemed to pop up out of nowhere.I'll need to do my own outlining of this the IPSec material, which isn't what I was hoping for.I admit, I'm a newbie and the rest of the book, so far, seems pretty decent, but I don't think I'm going to get comfortable with IPSec based on this alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spans multiple exams!
While preparing for the ISCW exam, I also read this - and it was great! It helped me pass both my ISCW and CCNA Security exams. Apparently, there's a lot of overlapping topics in both exams. Read the ISCW book and read BCMSN's topics on switch security then go for the CCNA Security - just awesome!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Study guide that goes beyond the exam topics!
When you're taking a Cisco exam, the basic requirements are: a)knowing the subject matter, b)knowing the test/exam taking strategies, c)and one of the most important, the hands on!

This book goes over all three topics. Subject matter is covered in detail, apparently beyond what is included in the exam itself. So, although the book is written for preparing for the CCNA Security exam, it will help you build your basic security toolkit for designing, configuring, maintaining, and auditing networks. I particularly liked the Review Questions at the end of each chapter, they may look simplistic but will surely be effective in order to pass the real exam!

"Key Topics" designation also come very handy to highlight an important concept for exam preparation. This should help you build your strategy on what to expect on the exam, both difficulty level and the subject matter.

Book contains a ton of full length configuration examples which can easily be used for the hands-on needed.

Overall, a very good effort once again by Catherine!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference for Self-Study
This book is a very good reference for those with the goal to sit for the CCNA Security Exam. The chapters are long, and could possibly have been broken down into more readable sections with better results. On the positive side, by reading this book, the reader will have a good foundation to build upon while preparing for this exam.

There are very detailed configuration examples included in the book, and the end-of-chapter review questions are most helpful in reinforcing the concepts introduced in the chapters. I would definitely recommend that the reader obtain some hands-on experience with the routers and switches before attempting to take the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Study Guide
Perfect for the CCNA Security Exam. Don't forget to put in some hands-on lab time also for those tricky simulation questions. Overall great prep highly recommended! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA 640-802 Network Simulator
Very good network simulator. great software tool configuring routers & switches without the expensive cost of purchasing the hardware. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars First Impressions
I bought this mainly for the lab exercises, but I didn't know how tied together this simulator and Mr. Odom's books are. I read the ICND1 and started on the ICND2 book when this arrived. This makes much more sense than just reading the screen prints in the book. This worked out of the box with no registration problems. It does seem to be a little dated, because you can't pin it to the taskbar or re-size the window very large.

As a simulator this may not be perfect, but just like my other certifications, I don't depend on one source. I was planning on buying some rack time, there are several companies that offer this, but this little simulator works fine for playing around with until I get to that point. I've also seen on eBay where you can buy complete labs, 2 routers, 2 switches and cables for under $500. Hopefully this simulator, the exercises, my other source for exercises and some rack time on real equipment will be enough to get comfortable for the simulation portion of the exam.

Since it is so closely tied to the book, I have started doing the exercises while reading. This seems to help not only by doing the commands, but getting used to reading the complete responses of the commands.

The only real complaint I have right now, is that I can't maximize the windows to the full screen and you don't telnet or ssh into a piece of equipment to get in the habit of doing that, you choose what piece of equipment you want to talk to from a drop down menu.

It should really be labeled as a companion to Mr. Odom's books. The lab exercises are well explained and if you follow along in the book, they are really very well explained. But for what it is, it seems to work well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong activation code
I can't tell how good the software is because the activation code on the CD case won't work. You expect it to work when it costs ~$100. I've contacted the tech support. Guess I get to find out how good their service is.

Update: Thought it might be due to Windows 7, so tried installing on a XP machine. Still the same problem. No reply from customer service. Too bad I can't give negative star rating.

Update2: Got a new copy from Amazon. It still won't run. When I try to register, I still get the same invalid code/isbn combo message. Tech support never replied to my e-mails.

1-0 out of 5 stars Will Not Install
I receive the error: SP Error[spnet_supplement_RegisterCiscoCode]:Procedure or function'spnet_supplement_RegisterCiscoCode'expects parameter'@installation_date',which was not supplied.

when I try register the product installed on my XP system with a valid Access Code.

5-0 out of 5 stars passed ICND1 and ICND2 on first try with help from this
I paired this simulator with CCNA: Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide: Exam 640-802, CCENT: Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician Study Guide: ICND1 (Exam 640-822) (Exam 640-822 With CD), CCENT/CCNA ICND1 Official Exam Certification Guide, 2nd Edition to pass both ICND1 and ICND2 on first try. 5-0 out of 5 stars this book its just great!!

i recieved thisbook like 4weeks ago and its just great, i got it right on time, exellent service!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Informational, but.....
For the ICND1 I read Todd Lammles exam prep, and found it to be both easy to read and very informational. I am about halfway through Odom's ICND 2 book and although it is very informational and I hope I can use it to pass the test, this book just doesn't flow like I hoped it would. Too bad Lammle doesn't write a book just for the ICND 2 exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for the sleep deprived
just crack this book and start reading and you'll be out in no time at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good learning tool
I've sat on this book over a year now.I'm including the ICND1 as well.Out of all of the materials I've used to study for the CCNA, this is by far the least effective.Don't even think about this book unless you already have a decent grasp on the topics discussed.

This book is hard to read, and difficult to understand. It doesn't flow well and isn't particularly well laid out.A specific example would be to look at some of the network diagrams in Chapter 2.It's too much, too fast. The diagrams are not documented.I found myself staring at one diagram in particular for over 10 minutes trying to figure it out. This is in chapter 2.It's not that I'm not capable, it's just that it does not make any sense!

This book just isn't very good. It's a painful, confusing read.I would have thought that a Cisco Press book would be a lot better.

I can safely say that after studying and passing the A+ and Network+ Certifications, being very close to passing the CCNA (no thanks to this book), and having studied and passed several other certifications, this is the worst study material I've paid for. There are better materials.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks critical CCNA material
The ICND1/ICND2 books lack critical information needed to pass the CCNA or ICND1/ICND2 exams. For example, the author states in the ICND2 chapter on OSPF that "DR (designated router) and BDR (backup designated router) election is covered in Cisco CCNP course material... however this material is *critical* to passing the CCNA exam.

While taking practice tests in from one of Todd Lammle's books, I found myself completely stumped by some of the questions - material that was never covered in Odom's book(s). I cannot in good conscience recommend these books to anyone that is looking to pass their CCNA exam, unless you buy at least another book or two as filler. ... Read more

One purchase. Expert training on limited hands-on experience. A near-guaranteed pass. Does it get any better? Not really.

Like your peanut butter in my chocolate, the combination of Sybex's bestselling CCNA Study Guide and the e-trainer network-simulation software mesh wonderfully. In fact, if truth be told, they always were intended to be sold as one unit; the book contains a lot of rote exercises that is a jumble of instructions if you're not sitting at a terminal, and the CD comes with practically no instructions at all. Put together in the CCNA Certification Kit, however, they create a force to be reckoned with.

But first, let's list for you what's in this little bundle of joy. The CCNA Study Guide is a densely written but comprehensive tome; the writing can be intimidating at times, but Lammle is to be commended for trying to show the reader the reasons that certain networking topics work, instead of merely providing you with lists of items to memorize. The concepts become particularly daunting during the chapters involving TCP/IP subnetting and VLAN trunking--but meticulous rereading will reward you not only with exam-passing knowledge, but with a deep understanding that will serve you well in the corporate world. There are only two slight disappointments: one is the chapter on WAN networking, which is a trifle light compared to the fact-packed density of the rest of the book; the other is that this book is not for absolute beginners, as it skips very quickly over such essential concepts as Ethernet networking and cabling types.

There is a third flaw here--fortunately, it's nonexistent in this bundle. A large portion of the Guide consists of simple exercises to be run on Cisco routers--which normally is a problem for the CCNA student. Most people don't have access to, and cannot afford, the roughly $2,500 in equipment that it takes to set up a sample lab. But that's where the CCNA Virtual Lab e-trainer comes in; it's a software package that emulates a network that consists of three Cisco routers, a Catalyst 1900 switch, and a couple of WAN links.

For what it does at the price, it does it well. It's not, by any means, a full-fledged simulation, but it does emulate most of the basic commands well enough for you to pass--and the amount of learning you'll get from the "hands-on" experience is exponentially better than any amount of book learning. Tinkering around with your own setup will help you remember the oft-cryptic Cisco commands and password levels better than anything else, and the exercises given to you in the study guide will suddenly become full-fledged workshops that expand your learning.

Now, there are those who have criticized the Virtual Lab for many, sometimes valid, reasons: not all the basic commands are adequately supported, the interface is clunky, there are known bugs, and it's useless beyond anything but the CCNA level. (If you go on to the next level of the Cisco exams, most of the advanced commands aren't supported.) But there is a saying in the industry that should be well taken here: "Close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades." Yes, there are better Cisco simulator programs. Yes, there are cheaper ones. No other offering, however, has the range of features and depth that you'll find at this price--more importantly, it's enough to pass. Must you have perfection when you can have a passing grade?

In short, the strengths of each item in this boxed set shore up the weaknesses of the other--and, as such, it's a vital tool in the arsenal of any CCNA aspirant. Highly recommended. --William Steinmetz ... Read more

It gives in-depth explaination about Routing Protocols and everything else that has to do with networking.
I can compare this book with other books of Todd Lammle
and I find that this book is a great improvement over other books.

I definitely would recommend this book to every-one that wants to pass the CCNA exam.

It couldn't have written better!

Also the CCNA Router Simulator is a must. CLI Commands you better know inside out!

The FastPass Book is the topping of the cake. This is the latest fase just before doing the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Complete Material for CCNA
I think this is the most complete material for CCNA studies. The Study Guide covers all topics of the test and it's written in an easy understanding way. The Fast Pass is a really great book for review and we can focus on our weak points. The Virtual Lab is not the best simulator but is suitable for preparing for the test.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very displease with AMAZON and the package
Displeased with this entire transaction.First, the package was received with box seal labels already broken but NO SOFTWARE was opened. Second, package contains two study guides however, both books read exacly the same, almost word for word.ThirdI returned the package to AMAZON with a thorough explaination of the above and they would only refund $72 on a $144 purchase, 50%, even though no software had been opened. Upon finding this out, I promptly e-mailed them back with instruction to halt the refund and return my package, they ignored my request and did not respond back to my e-mail, they went ahead and processed the rediculous refund. I'll think twice before doing any more business with AMAZON.

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs To Better Described
I bought this video tutor to help me in pursuit of the CCNA certification.I am taking the one-exam Explorer series of courses to get the certificate. These videos seem more suited to the two part exam series since they make reference to the material in those textbooks.I would have like to have known that.I probably would have chosen something else as a study aid since I don't have the books referred to in the videos.I'm on a limited budget and this was a disappointment in terms of money spent and product received.

4-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Video Mentor
Hi Folks,

I found the CCNA Video Mentor very helpful in understanding the basic concepts of networking. It helped me to reforce what I had read elsewhere and better understand a networking through Ciscos eyes. It was worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource/Study Guide
This is another great book by Cisco Press. I work on and support wireless everyday and not only is this a good resource to have on my shelf to refer to when I have questions but it's an excellent study guide for the CCNA wireless exam. In my opinion Cisco Press is the only way to go when studying for one of their exams.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rushed to Press
I have read many reviews about the errata, typos, and general feel that this book was rushed to press, and I must agree. Many of the opening chapters seem merely to be a hodgepodge of tables pulled from Cisco documentation with no real description of the meaning of the material. Most of the figures within the book either have no bearing on what is being discussed, or are in organized in a way to make the example nearly impossible to follow.Though I understand this is a CCNA-level book, I found description of radio technologies are rushed and shallow and left me scratching my head, though I have worked with IP of radio systems of all sorts for a decade.

I admire what was attempted, from radio theory to basic deployment of a Cisco wireless network in less than 500 pages.Yet, even with the most experienced writer/engineer, this would be a Herculean effort.

4-0 out of 5 stars I wish I'd had a book like this back in 2005..
I received this book a couple of months ago, and couldn't devote much time to reading through it when I originally received it, but I sat down with it this evening & made some notes..

First off, I wish I'd had a book like this back in 2005 when I was first implementing Cisco's controller based unified wireless architecture.I had to read deployment guides and release notes and piece together the information that is neatly contained in this book.

Chapers 1- 9 [Wireless LAN Fundamentals]

This section covers everything from the basic WLAN concepts, principles of RF, antennas, 802.11 protocols, AP discovery methods, and how packets are delivered from the wireless to the wired networks
The graphics used to show influences on wireless transmissions are very helpful to visualize the affect that different sources of 'interference' have on the RF signals. The antenna types section is very thorough and gives good examples of common antennas chosen for wireless deployments, as well as all the extra antenna connectors and hardware that might be required for outdoor deployments. The diagrams of client communications [Fig 7-9 through Fig 7-18] are extremely helpful to visualize the flow of information from a client station through the WLAN and back again. The section covering other wireless technologies is also very thorough in describing how a ZigBee WPAN operates.ZigBee technology is often overlooked in discussions of wireless LANs, as are DECT phones and WiMAX, and it is good to see these technologies represented even if they are not a major part of the IUWNE exam.

Chapters 10 - 16 [Cisco Wireless LANs]

This section covers Cisco WLAN Architecture, controller discovery and association methods, client roaming, SNMP, migrating aIOS {autonomous APs} to LWAPP, the Cisco Mobility Express line of APs/controllers and wireless clients. As Cisco's WLAN Architecture line is always evolving - the best place to read about Cisco's offerings is of course Cisco's website, but this section covers the basics of the access points and controllers that were available when this book was initially published (2009).Since then Cisco has released the 1140, 3500, and 1520 series access points, along with the 5500 series controllers. The step by step process (Ch. 11) of how an AP joins a controller is always helpful when trying to pinpoint where in the join process the communication is breaking down between an AP and a controller.
Layer 2/Layer 3 Roaming is described in detail in Chapter 12, along with helpful visual aides to further diagram the roaming characteristics of each type of client roam method.Migrating APs from IOS to LWAPP - this is something that we all do again and again - either the wrong AP SKU was ordered, you're performing a network migration - or are just testing/troubleshooting either IOS or LWAPP functionality - the upgrade process is defined in simple terms with visuals from the upgrade tools. The only time I've personally seen the Cisco Mobility Express line of hardware was when I was assisting with beta testing back in '07 - but they serve a purpose for business cases where the scalability of the other lines of Cisco hardware is not necessary. It is good to see this hardware covered in depth in this section, as most of us won't see this gear in person.Wireless Clients - great screen captures of configuring Windows, Mac and Linux wireless clients with common wireless NICs, including how to configure the Cisco ADU, ACAU, and the Secure Services Client.

Chapters 17 - 20 (WLAN Maintenance and Administration)

These chapters cover securing the WLAN, enterprise management, maintaining & troubleshooting WLANs
This first chapter (Ch 17) is a good primer on WLAN attacks, WLAN security methods, and has nice diagrams showing the authentication/authorization information flow between the client, authenticator and authentication servers.WCS is covered in depth in chapter 18, and this section is very helpful in describing the uses for WCS - management, reporting, auditing configurations, simulating wireless coverage and generating proposals based on RF simulations. The troubleshooting section will be a good reference section for any wireless engineer - the most common debug commands are listed along with descriptions of the data generated by each of them, as well as defining common client-side issues. Now although I have not used this book to study for or take the IUWNE exam 640-721, this book still serves as a reference guide for anyone just beginning to learn about the world of Cisco wireless LANs and Cisco wireless hardware (APs/controllers/WCS).The information is presented in clear terms along with helpful visuals to reinforce the topics covered.Brandon Carroll has done a wonderful job of covering a lot of very technical information without taking a deep-dive into the nuts and bolts of each of the topics covered. This book is a primer for the next stage of reading materials (yet to be published) for the CCNP wireless track. It is easier to begin to understand wireless networking through repeated layers of information.

This book is an excellent starting place for Cisco network engineers new to the line of Cisco wireless hardware, or the fundamentals behind the technology from Cisco's perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Wireless Official Certification Guide
As someone who is fairly new into the Cisco certifications, I choose this book based on my goal for a CCNA wireless certification.

If I am taking a Microsoft certification I buy Microsoft publishers - so for me buying Cisco Press books to take the Cisco exams is the only way to go.
I feel the Cisco Press books are written in such a way, that really help someone who is trying to grasp the concepts, and are articulated in a clear concise manner.

This book in particular I thought was well laid out from start to end, the chapters flowed and I was always able to understand the text. The breakdown of the Exam Topics really helped me hone in to particular areas of study and then test myself with the quizzes.

The CD was of great value as well - I use it to test my retention of the material which is great to really really sink the info into my head (Studying Cisco always hurts my head)

Overall this book has really helped me and I hope that my cost and effort will pay off when I pass the test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for someone starting up in the wireless networking field
I have been working in networking for a few years, but was never on the wireless side of things. I recently moved positions and now run everything network related, including wireless. Having a solid base in how a network runs, but no real world wireless knowledge, this book saved me a lot of time and headache. It gave me everything I needed to configure a network. Then I could go back and learn about the technology and how to troubleshoot it properly (should've done it the other way around, but didn't have time). I will be supplementing this book with some more in depth ones, but this was a great starter for someone like me (no wireless experience, but solid networking background). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The score tells the tale
This book and CD were my primary prep tools.

Took the 640-822 on Friday, needed 804 scored 862!

Prepping now for part II (640-816)

Note this book is primarily to take the 640-802 (the whole thing).

I have a shelf of Cisco books, and still found this very helpfull.

1-0 out of 5 stars False Advertising Plain and Simple
I'm not going to flat out accuse Boson and McGraw Hill of lying but it's pretty darn close. They clearly advertise 20 simulated lab exercises and the lads do indeed come with the book but there's a catch. When its time to do the lab in chapter 16 (5th lab) you have to pay more money to Boson.Yep, when it's time to get in to the real meat and potatoes of router configuration you have to pay extra money.Where I come from we call that the bait and switch. The one and only reason I chose this book was because it came with a virtual lab. Now, I find out that I have has to sift through inaccurate information and typos only to find out that the one thing that made it worth while is a con job. This book is a sub par teaching tool at best.If I had it to do over I would probably go with Sybex and then buy some used routers online. This is the worst training tool I have ever used.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good starting point for leaning CCNA material and test prep
Let me first start this off by saying that no 1 thing will prepare you for the CCNA exam (640-802). However, if you are just starting out this book is EXCELLENT for learning the core concepts and principles of netwroking and the things you need to know for the test.

The book does come with Boson simulator which does help, but to really get your feet wet you need Cisco's Packet Tracer or something equivalent that will allow you to actually interact with the hardware. And for test prep, you need to DEFINITELY invest in some proactice questions/dumps to prepare for the test.

But again, let me reitereate how much I have really enjoyed this book and MR. Deal has done a good job of explaianing the material and building your knowledge toward the more difficult concepts.

Many of the things mentioned here were completely new to me, but with his material I was able to figure it out. I would high recommend his book to those interested in getting their CCNA or a book that gives a good overview of networking topics.

PS: The CCNA exam is about to change so there may be some material that won't be on the new test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why are the reviews so old?
I do no understand why this book was published in 2008, but all of the reviews they have listed are for way before 2008. One of the main reviews was posted in 2003, five years before the book was even published. This does not make any sense to me. Does anyone have this book that can post an updated review? I would greatly appreciate it.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE!!!
Last year I finished my CCNA course and now I was looking forward to taking the certification. There are a lot of books for it out there, but personally I think that this is the best! It covers every possible angle for the exam and apart from it you have a hole CD with practice questions!

You could not ask for more!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a great book for the CCNA preparation
Morning,

Here is my review concerning this package that I had the chance and that helped me to pass the CCNA .

The package is very solid and very classy. I had the chance to read few years ago official exam cert guide for the CCNA and this book differs in some way. Here is what I think about it.

In the CCNA exam you can find a wide range of topic, the books here are focusing on each topic in a very good manner. I mean that the author Steve Mcquerry helps to describe each protocol in such a way that it "seems" easy.

The first book focuses on the ICND1 exam:
-Understand the principle on which basic networks operate
-Explore and configuration of LAN
-Extend the boundaries with WLAN
-Configure router to provide connectivity
-Learn about IP addressing
-Wan connections
-NAT
-Manage the router startup

this book provides all the foundations you need to have when you begin your Cisco career.

At the begining of each chapter you can find the objectives for that topic and you really need to stay on the line provided by the author. Questions and chapter summary are here to help you solidy your foundations :) If you make some mistakes just read the chapter again and try answering, the foundations are so important if you want to pursue with the CCNP later

As you progress into your reading you will find yourself amused by some "boring" stuff like subnetting etc etc.

I'd advice you to note and mark important stuff on the book. The author has explained each technical point in such a good way that you only need to read and write down it once . :)

The 2nd book is smaller (smaller but better ? :) ) .

The subjects are harder and more importants. I mean you ll learn about

-IOS structure
-L2 switching
-Routing protocols differences
-OSPF
-EIGRP
-ACL
-NAT/PAT
-WAN VPN SSL

This is where the hard stuff takes place. OSPF,EIGRP,RIP,ACL

All those topics were scaring me when I was studying for the CCNA but once again the author did a great job !!!

Now I'm close of getting my CCIE and I don't know what would be my skills if this foundation book was different !

The book can be consulted via Safari so don't hesitate to activate it and enjoy the pdf version on Ipad,Iphone while sitting in the bus etc etc :)

I give5 stars for sure !

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a complete guide + errors, Does not fully prep you for the test
I've been out of the business for 6 years haven't touched a Cisco device in as many.I was a CCNP and now need to re-cert. Do to my ignorance, as to how the test had changed, and my arrogance, as a former CCNP, I failed my 1st attempt.

I've always liked Cisco press. This book did give me an adequate review of the knowledge, but did nothing for the practical side. I would not recommend this for anyone who is relatively new to Cisco and networking. This book doe not at all go into enough depth of the technology, how to implement or truly trouble shoot. The level of the practice questions, while they helped with the study of the presented topics, in no way were at the same level as the test. Also, there were several errors in practice question answerers.

I felt somewhat mislead by the Cisco learning site as this book set seems to be what they mirrored.Hence leading to my purchase decision.

This is a study guide(as it says), NOT an exam prep. Again my bad.

I intend to buy CCNA 640-802 Exam Certification Library, Simulator Edition, I'll let you know how it turns out.

Hope this helps.

UPDATE:Pass with lots of room to spare. Use the above. It was excellent.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for CCNA Test Preparation
I felt misled when I bought this text. I thought it is intended for those who don't plan to take the class, but plan to take the test. If you plan to take the CCNA test, get the official exam certification guide, definitely not this one. The materials covered in the self-study are inadequate to prepare one to take the test, though they are still useful. The author does a good job showing the structure of OSI layers, how they compare to TCP/IP structure, the packet, frame and segment format for the transport and network access (or data-link) layers, how the packets flow through switches and routers. The subnetting section, perhaps the most important skill one needs to understand when working with a network, describes a slow but more scientific way to analyze IP addressing schemes, while the exam certification guide adds the quick and dirty method to help test-takers answer the exam questions more efficiently. In addition, this self-study text has very limited practice problems while the official guide has extensive drills and summary sections to ensure students truly understand the subnetting and other networking concepts. In fact, the official guide also comes with the test software by Boson that covers all possible exam question types and the Network simulation tool.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is a fair book to study be.
I have already passed the CCNA exams but I let my certification slip and I purchased this book to use as a refresher.I might also add that I have been working in the IT industry for the past 15 years both as a LAN Administrator and as a Network designer/administrator.The book is barely adequate to teach someone the fundamentals of networking. It has numerous typographical errors.I would recommend this book only if your company pays for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good choice
I found this book good and useful especially the author provided section summaries in each chapter. This helped me to understand easily. There are chapter summaries at the end of each chapter too. Review questions are also provided for each chapter. This arrangement is good for readers.

For those who is preparing CCNA exam, this is a good choice to begin with. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great way to learn CCNA, but proofreading was horrible
This is my third CCNA book that I have read and by far the best in explaining the material. The only issue is that there's an overabundance of errors in the book. Some are minimal and some actually are detrimental to the learning of the student.I am shocked there are so many mistakes with examples, different points throughout the book and some portions are inconsistent with other portions. The parts of the book that are error free are great, but a way better effort could have been put in proofreading before releasing (esp. since this is a ver 2 of the book)

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Exam Prep Recommendation
This book is great for anyone who is studying for their CCNA.This book is very detailed and if there are any concepts that need any clarification, this book will clarify it for you.I have to say that I was never any good at subnetting and I am getting better at subnetting because of this book. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is studying for their CCNA.You will not be disappointed at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Cram Box, but CD test text too small
I loved Jeremy's CBT Nuggests presentations, best way to learn the nuts and bolts of the CCNA material I've seen. This book is also great for cramming for the exam. The only problem I have with it is the fonts on the practice test CD that comes with it. The text is so small you can hardly read it, and no way I can find to adjust it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best CCNA Book Out There.
I've been through ALL the CCNA books out there -- from Lammle's CCNA book to all the various CCNA study guides and so on -- and this one book by Jeremy Cioara is the absolute best available.

The cover of this book looks generic and nondescript, but Cioara has an ability to not only communicate in an amazingly down-to-earth, plain English way, that is incredible. Also, he not only is easy and engaging to read, but -- *gasp* -- he actually gets his facts straight!

If you've been through the official CCNA books, you probably think that you have no choice but just to memorize a lot of things without hope of ever getting a simple, commonsense explanation for them, but you would be wrong in that assumption, because Cioara actually explains the things you assumed no one could ever explain.

5-0 out of 5 stars If your not reading Todd Lammle, you are missing it!
This is the second book I have read cover to cover from Todd. If you are reading other books to study for the CCNA Wireless, be prepared to take it more than once. Do yourself a favor and buy this one instead, it will save you $150.00. Do yourself a bigger favor and attend his bootcamp. Four days in his bootcamp of hard reading and studying, and I scored a 956...tough to beat that. I would love to see a CCNP wireless book by Todd, but I'm not so sure that one is coming.

1-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Wireless Study Guide, Todd Lammle
Todd Lammle writes excellent books and this one is no exception. Most of those who buy this book are in need of some refresher material, valid test questions and clearly written content.Todd delivers on all three counts. He wrote the book for those who need to pass the CCNA 640-721 Wireless exam and he spells out all of the Cisco test objectives in the preface.
The book begins with an overview of Wireless technology, then progresses to more detailed review of the topics needed to pass the CCNA exam, all in orderly fashion.Todd uses numerous IOS examples to illustrate the "real world" scenarios. That approach nicely complements the official Cisco Press book which has more technical material but less of the "real world" material. He also includes a CD with a PDF study guide, flashcards and additional test questions.
I like the book.I anticipate taking the exam in late October and expect to see familiar content when I sit at the test table OR check over the new equipment that I have to set up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Written
This book is very well written. After attending Todd's boot camps, one can see that they style of his writing is the same as the way that he teaches his classes.I would highly recommend this book and any of the other books that he has written.A must for anyone that is looking to study for the CCNA exam. Thanks again Todd for a well written book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost Aced It!

3-0 out of 5 stars fine book but it is not "comprehensive"

I used this book for CCNA Security certification. The book itself was fun to read and chapters on encryption and Digital Signatures were well written. However, this book fails to cover all the topics that Cisco has identified for this exam.

1. Zone-based Firewall in IOS was lightly mentioned in the book but there is no in-depth coverage.
2. Chapter 12 on IPsec VPN was the worst chapter. It seems it was put up together in a rush. I had to use other books for this specific topic. This chapter was a big disappointment.
3. SSL was not covered at all while asymmetrical encryption was discussed.

Overall, it'll be a great book if author can improve it with a new edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Security
This book is just what I needed after passing my CCNA. It is more than just an introduction to security. If you are looking to know more about locking down your Cisco routers and switches, and just know more about security in general then I recommend this book. It's actually a super short book which is nice. He doesn't extend the chapters more than they should be. Good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!
This book is a great and valuable resource full of a lot of technical information! One thing that comes to mind when I read this book is the fact that technical material is effectively communicated without being overwhelming. The electronic flashcards and PDF file are handy so you can literally study anywhere! If you are serious about learning Cisco IOS network security then you definitely need to read this book! The level of detail and focus is exceptional. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book and must have
Great book for studying for the CCNA Voice certification.I chose this one because it's the newest book available and I've used Sybex to get my my CCNA.The coverage of the CUCM Express and Unity Express is very thorough. You really don't need to bother buying hardware to practice on because it clearly steps through the setup process. The CD has a test engine and flash cards that are nice for final certification cramming.

4-0 out of 5 stars Doesnt get much better than this.
Excellent book for someone looking to get their CERT for VOIP.
Clearly details step by step instructions and subject material.
This could be called the Idiots guide to VOIP.
Have used other books and they were not as concise and hard to read.
Passed my test the 2nd time using this book to study!

Thanks for a great product! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars book depository, bad service
I put one order in with 2 books. If the workers for Book Depository smart enough put 2 books in one package, they are not very smart.
They seperate them into two and now I only receive one book. After a week, I have no idea where is the other one. When I sent email, they sent email back and blame the USPS. Depository is not a relieable company. My class already start but now I am still sitting here and don't know where is the book. they just sent the lab book but they left the text book somewhere. Who know where it is and I got no phone number to contact book depository directly

Product Description
The Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) is the firststep to the hottest certification in the internetworkingindustry. This CCNA study guide maps to Cisco's CCNA training path andprovides full coverage of crucial exam topics, including reviewsections and hundreds of practice questions. The CD containstest-preparation software and informational resources.Amazon.com Review
An impressive offering, CCNA: Cisco Certified NetworkAssociate Study Guide does a terrific job of making networkingbasics approachable. Though written for those already familiar withtechnology, it nonetheless manages to clearly explain what makesnetworks work without undercutting their inherent complexity. AuthorsLammle and Chellis set the stage by going through such fundamentals aslocal area network (LAN) devices, the Open Systems Interconnection(OSI) model, and various data transport protocols. From there, thebook delves into such topics as network congestion--what causes it andwhat to do about it--Internet protocol (IP) addressing and subnetting, interior routing protocols, and basic routing configuration.

As ischaracteristic of any quality study guide, each chapter ends with asummary followed by a mountain of review questions, which are goodpractice for the written CCNA exam. Answers are listed in one of thesix appendices, which also cover AppleTalk and related Request forComments (RFCs). In addition, this book contains a fantastic 116-pageglossary--again, a terrific feature for networking newcomers. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Chapter 1 terrible
I haven't gotten past chapter one yet, but I hope the rest of the book is better than this.A lot better. The book seems to contradict itself regularly, and uses terms that it hasn't previously defined, so I have to keep a bookmark in the glossary section and flip back to it frequently
(and I'm not a novice either). The questions at the end of the chapter are completely worthless. Many of them are so vague as to be unanswerable, and for many of the rest I can find quotes in the chapter that contradict the answers given.I like review questions, so I've bought another book that has better ones. But if the quality of the text doesn't improve in the coming chapters, I'll have to give up on this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cisco ccna Review
I will be sending this book back because it is from 2002 and does not contain updates to ccna content and the readable CD that came with the book can only be opened in adobe V5, I cannot downgrade to V5.
Thank you

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad primer, but....
Lammle does an excellent job of explaining complex networking concepts (particularly subnetting) in terms simple enough for someone with no previous exposure to networking to understand.

Unfortunately, some subjects were oversimplified, to the point that I felt underprepared for the CCNA test.If you are an excellent student, or you retain 100% of what you read, this book will get you a passing score on the exam. For the rest of us, I recommend Wendell Odom's CCNA Self Study Certification Library (Cisco Press - ISBN 1-58720-095-3).There's more to read, but you'll enter the exam more confident and better prepared.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lamle does it right
The most challenging thing a certification test-prep book faces is the way it invariably will be misused. There is an old saw about using the right tool for the job, which in essence tells us to use the correct planning, strategy, and action to get the result we want. The majority of people purchasing a book like this are planning to take the CCNA exam and want some help preparing. This makes sense, and this is why I myself purchased Lamle's book. While it worked, and I passed with a 901, I couldn't help but wonder how much more difficult it would have been without hands-on experience with the devices, protocols and processes themselves at work. I have not yet met anyone who studied for, and passed, the CCNA test without any prior hands-on network experience.

It makes me very nervous to read someone's review suggesting, "This is the only preparation you need". To pass the test, you will likely need some experience as well, and to avoid the Catch-22 of requiring experience to get the job, yet also the job to gain the experience, I would recommend seeking first a junior position in the field, where you can not only get the experience, but also the mentoring of senior networking staff.

However, once you pass the test and have the cert, we face another challenge: "Does the cert verify your ability to apply what you know?" Not really, but that's why you cannot stop learning and developing your skills set there. You will likely need the CCNA to get the interview for the Networking job you seek, but you will need interview skills to get the job, and you will need to be able to APPLY your technical knowledge to keep it. Lamle's book is one of the best prep books out there for the CCNA. But if you plan to have a long-term career in Networking, do not think for a moment that you can stop there. And I'm not just talking about the next level of Cisco Certification.

Buy this book and study it, but make sure you maintain a long-term professional skills development plan, and if you don't already have it, start building your experience in the field. You'll need it.

Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Buy!
This book definitely helped me pass my CCNA.The material in this book will definitely provide you with the tools you need in order to configure Cisco equipment and pass the CCNA the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CCNA Guide
The CCNA Discovery Learning Guide is a great book for your CCNA Exam Preparation and also for learning about tasks you will be performing when you're working as a CCNA.It covers the routing and switching concepts that you are expected to know for the CCNA exam and it also teaches you how to implement certain tasks in the enterprise. This guide supplements the online Networking Academy curriculum, and does a great job implementing everything that was on the online curriculum in two books.Part I of the book is just theory and concepts, and Part II of the book has labs. You cannot succeed in the networking world if you just know the theory or just the labs -- you must have knowledge of both! The beginning of each chapter in Book 1 lists the objectives in a format of questions.I found that helpful because after I read each chapter I was able to go back and check if I really learned the objectives. At the end of the each chapter there were also review questions and challenge questions that made me think and find out what areas I was weak in.There were also packet tracer activities in the included CD, and that really helped because I didn't have the equipment to perform most of them.Book 2 had a lot of labs that helped you enforce the concepts that you learned from Book 1 and figure out how to perform certain tasks. There were challenge labs also that tested my knowledge from all the previous chapters. This CCNA Discovery Learning Guide definitely helped me prepare for my CCNA Exam and improve my hands on skills! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Breakdown of CCNA material
I used this book to prepare for my CCNA. It made my studies go a lot smoother than if I had used just the Cisco press books. I had used other books before, but the material tended to be very dry. This book is excellent. The labs solidify the concepts as well. There is also a helpful website to guide you through should you have any questions as you read through the book. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only CCNA resource you need.
This is exactly what I was looking for, I've gotten through the first eight chapters, no superfluous material. Just the facts, organized and presented intelligently and orderly. I'm putting my other CCNA books to bed. All the CCNA objectives are covered clearly and thoroughly. The book has large margins so that I am able to write legible notes. What really distinguishes this book from others I have or looked at is the number of labs included. I am unaware of any book that so thoroughly covers the CCNA lab objectives as well as this book. Each Lab exercise states a purpose, an objective and a walk through. If you are unable to configure routers and switches you are not going to pass the exam. These labs are excellent and I am becoming much more confident working from the CLI as I go through these labs. I do not hand out superlatives lightly but this is the only book you need to pass your CCNA exam. Note: I have not passed my exam yet but I have two friends that used this book exclusively and passed with scores in the mid 900's)Best bang for your buck, A must buy if you are serious about learning the theory behind the CCNA as well as learning to configure the CISCO IOS from the CLI.

5-0 out of 5 stars EZ. (period)
I have tried the confusing books from other authors, (they are in the Library now), IF you have a problem like me understanding how binary and/hex works, This is your book, to become a CCNA, this is the book you need to have, combine this to the website and the RACKS you need to do the Labs, there is no better offer, I was about to pay $600.00 for some Train - ing Videos NO NEED.. This book is awesome..

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best CCNA study manual
I've been on official Cisco courses and bought most of the Cisco Press manuals, the key difference to this manual is the simple and straight forward language used. The topics are laid out clearly with the right amount of theory versus example; this book removes all the "fluff" that makes most of the official Cisco manuals a very boring and dry read. The book is further enhanced with real world tips by the author. If you want to but a CCNA study guide and pass the exam then this is the best! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorest of the CCNA 4 companion guides
This Review is being written 8-18-2007 for WAN Technologies CCNA4 Companion Guide, by Allan Reid.

This textbook was the worst one of the four companion guides provided in the Cisco Academy courses for CCNA.The text does not adequately cover the topics that are in the CCNA ICND exam. There is not enough detail on the topics introduced.Neither does it cover the topics in the Cisco online Academy course. If you use this book, you can't answer the question in Cisco's own online chapter tests. For some reason, this book diverges from the online curriculum. My classmates, and the instructor, universally agreed that this book is poor.

Note: CCNA Academy courses Version 3.1 use this book. The entire curriculum is rewritten, making this book obsolete, EXCEPT for Academy use, as they may still take the old CCNA exams after the announced expiration date in November of this year. The version of the CCNA course being taught varies by Academy during this transition time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Even more Disappointing that CCNA 3
I have to say that although the first two books in the CCNA Companion Guide series were good (CCNA 1 Networking Basics and CCNA 2 Routers and Routing Basics), each being 400-500+ pages long with detailed information, the last two companion books (CCNA 3 Switching Basics and Intermediate Routing and CCNA 4 WAN Technologies) have been stripped down to 200+ pages each but still at the same price as the first two!

This is in stark contrast to the actual course material which can be seen in the CCNA ICND self study book is much more rigorous and detailed than the CCNA Intro self study book. This tells me that the 3,4 companion guides should also be much more detailed in order to prepare the candidate adequately.

I'm not certain if the above review used the first two books but they were much better.

Not worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Companion to the Online Course
This bookis the official supplemental textbook for version 3.1.1 of the CCNA 4 course in the Cisco Networking Academy Program. The book is a ready reference for the material covered in the online curriculum. As a book rather than being online it offers several advantages such as the ability to use it when an online connection is not available, and of course, the book format is more convenient for many people when compared to reading from a screen.

As this book was written by a different person than the online material, it provides a different but complementary perspective. It is often a help to have things worded from a different angle even though the basic information being conveyed is the same.

This book is recommended for anyone studing for the fourth CCNA course. Likewise it compatible with and you should also get the WAN Technologies CCNA 4 Labs and Study Guide by John Rullan (ISBN: 1-58713-173-0). The two books work together with this book suggesting that you perform certain experiments out of the lab book from time to time.

Using the material along with the online course is easily the best way to study for the test. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a really incredibly useful book
This book is so useful that my copy keeps getting stolen so I have to replace it.

It really is handy for anyone. You will always forget some step in configuring frame relay if you don't do it every day or maybe you need a refresher on switching your trunking protocol. But what this book is particularly good for is going over commands that will be relevant for a job interview just before going in.This book is an indispensable help for those last minute cram sessions for a job doing something that you know how to do, but haven't done in years.

Make sure you keep a close eye on it though as I swear these things grow legs and walk off on you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another good Cisco publication.
Although I haven't had to use this manual yet; as I haven't been out of Cisco school for very long; I'm sure it will be VERY handy down the road after I have forgot half of my command line parameters! Seems to be just as advertised, and it is a handy size to fit in my laptop carrier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great book to have. Small so it fits in my lap top carrier. Cisco has so many commands and when you don't use all of them everyday, sometimes it's hard to remember. Also if you are a CCNA student, this is great for CCNA-2 when you start working in the lab. You can find any command in this book that you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars great, for real life or to study for CCNA
Great product, either for real life or to study for the CCNA.I do wish they made a version w/ spiral binding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for the CCNA individual!!!
Must have handy quide and reference for those commands not used everyday and a refreasher on those you forgot! Maps perfectly the Cisco's CCNA network academey classes (CCNA 1,2,3, & $). I'd also recommend the "CCNA Portable Command Guide" too.

I looked around the book store and started with this book ONLY because theothers were to advanced for me to start with. I needed to get my feet wetfirst and this book did just fine. I now have another more advanced bookthat I am studing and I am happy I started out slow and easy. That is justmy kind of pace. Nice writing styles and down to earth.

3-0 out of 5 stars A class member from Charlottesville
This book is just o-kay. I took the first semester of two with this book (Kelly "cannonball" Cannon was the instructer ). You will still have to buy another book to learn what you will need to know for the test. The book covers tpoics that aren't CISCO objectives, and there are manytypos. I also bought the book the two books by Todd lammle. They were morein depth, and had there own faults. Good luck ... Read more
