Cisco Networking Academy Program CCNA 1 and 2 Lab Companion, Revised Third Edition, is the complete collection of labs created for version 3.1 of the Cisco Networking Academy Program CCNA 1 and CCNA 2 web-based courses.

A collection of more than 100 labs, including the Case Study labs from the CCNA course, provides you with hands-on experience to practice the skills needed for CCNA certification. The material begins to prepare you to take the CCNA certification exam (640-801, or 640-821 and 640-811).

Keep your completed labs on-hand in this book to use as a study guide later. These labs are also referenced in the Cisco Networking Academy Program CCNA 1 and 2 Companion Guide, Revised Third Edition.

Each lab helps facilitate your full understanding of the networking and routing topics covered with features like:

Objective-Identifies the goals that are to be accomplished in the lab.
  • Background/Preparation-Provides a list of the equipment needed to run the lab.
  • Reflection Questions-As appropriate, the labs include questions that elicit particular points of understanding. These questions help verify your comprehension of the technology being implemented.

As in the courses, the CCNA 1 section covers networking basics, including the basics of Ethernet technologies, TCP/IP, network media, IP addressing, and routing. The CCNA 2 section covers routers and routing basics, including the basics of configuring routers, routing protocols, more TCP/IP concepts, access control lists, and networking troubleshooting skills.

1-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Study Guide Rip Off!
There seems to be a lot of sales hype in the form of apparent 'customers' recommending this with testimonials, but I've found the materials are incomplete and loaded with errors; the testimonials are obviously bogus! Then comes the added insult of trying to communicate, but Mr. Lammle refuses to try to correct his materials, or even discuss this; no, he has 'banned' criticism!Beware!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good enough to be a school text
Which, for me, it was.I used this book as a text in a routing class, and wanting to get certified later, I decided to buy it.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for CCNA
Great for anyone looking to become CCNA certified. Todd is a proven author in the IT field.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great overview
This book has consistently been one of the most accessible overviews of the CCNA material. I have been using these books since the 3rd edition and I have yet to be disappointed. Although the book may not go into as much depth as some of the other books on the market, it presents the ideas in a very clear language. If you are looking to get a good idea of how IP networks are put together and a basic introduciton to configuring cisco routers, this book will be a huge help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Todd Lamle Rocks
I am preparing for my CCNA and I am so happy to have this book to prep me for my Exams.
Todd knows exactly how to dissect the difficult topics. I've beenputting off taking the exam for 4 years now. With this book I've got the confidence and knowledge I need to ace it!

    Thank you Todd

    Product Description

Written by networking veteran with 20 years of experience, Network Warrior provides a thorough and practical introduction to the entire network infrastructure, from cabling to the routers. What you need to learn to pass a Cisco certification exam such as CCNA and what you need to know to survive in the real world are two very different things. The strategies that this book offers weren 't on the exam, but they 're exactly what you need to do your job well.

Network Warrior takes you step by step through the world of hubs, switches, firewalls, and more, including ways to troubleshoot a congested network, and when to upgrade and why. Along the way, you 'll gain an historical perspective of various networking features, such as the way Ethernet evolved. Based on the author 's own experience as well as those he worked for and with, Network Warrior is a Cisco-centric book, focused primarily on the TCP/IP protocol and Ethernet networks -- the realm that Cisco Systems now dominates. The book covers:

The type of networks now in use, from LANs, WANs and MANs to CANs

    • The OSI Model and the layers involved in sending data
    • Hubs, repeaters, switches, and trunks in practice
    • Auto negotiation and why it 's a common problem in network slowdowns
    • Route maps, routing protocols, and switching algorithms in Cisco routers
    • The resilient Ethernet -- how to make things truly redundant
    • Cisco 6500 multi-layer switches and the Catalyst 3750 switch
    • Telecom nomenclature -- why it 's different from the data world
    • T1 and DS3
    • Firewall theory, designing access lists, authentication in Cisco devices
    • Server load balancing technology
    • Content switch module in action
    • Designing QOS and what QOS does not do
    • IP design and subnetting made easy

The book also explains how to sell your ideas to management, how networks become a mess as a company grows, and why change control is your friend. Network Warrior will help network administrators and engineers win the complex battles they face every day.

5-0 out of 5 stars How tech books should be written
This is how technology books should be written.Lets be honest, switching and routing is a very dry subject but the author makes the subject matter easy to read, comprehend and enjoy (yes, I said enjoy).

The book is written from the view point of someone who has configured (and broken) networks so when you are reading you get "done that before" and "that makes sense now" moments from beginning to end.The command examples really help as a reference guide too.

I wish more books I need to read where written like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Network Warrior
Between this and the Cisco IOS Cookbook O'Riley, it was pretty much a one stop reference for implementing something new, or learning about something new i saw in a config.I found them to be helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
First of all, you can't go wrong with anything published by O'Reilly,I have a number of titles from them that have proven invaluable over the years.Network Warrior continues in that tradition and the author has done an outstanding job of covering all those things you've forgotten since you took your CCNA as well as provided an array of additional information that any Network Admin can use in his/her daily duties.I found the chapter on Multilayer Switches particularly useful and full of facts and pointers you won't find published anywhere else. From daily maintenance to architecting networks, this book has it all and has its place of distinction among my "must have" books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff....
I've had my CCNA for about 2 yrs now and am coming up on renewal time. I'm actually working on my CCNP which will also satisfy that needed renewal.

What I like about this book is that it goes into other details that the CCNA study guides don't. So the title(well, subtitle) does exactly what it states!

Great book! And this was actually a book I enjoyed reading on my leisure time just to get a better grasp of concepts and things I hadn't even thought about.

It has also cleared up a couple of things while on the job!Like i said, Good stuff.....:-)

Reviewers that have claimed that the title was deceptive in some way are being unfair IMO. I'm not sure how anyone could be mislead that this might be Cisco-centric with the title"Network Warrior:Everything you need to know that wasn't on the CCNA"(?). Plus the mention of EIGRP, CatOS vs. IOS, a snippet in the Preface that states "Cisco equipment is used for the examples within this book, ...." also leads one to believe that this will mostly, if not entirely, Cisco specific.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Network book I've read in a long time.Ever?
I'm keeping this short and sweet.I have the CCNA, CCNP, CCIP, and just passed the CCIE R&S written.Looking back; this book filled in so many gaps for me and this is a must read for anybody who wants to be successful in the Information Technology field.

The chapters regarding CSU/DSU alarms and what these indicate was such a big help.Stuff you can't learn from Cisco Press books or taking any of their courses. Also, the section where the author breaks down interface errors was massive for me.That section helped me so much in the ISP world when I was getting started in my supporting roles. It's just a wonderful book that answers so many questions and gives you the real picture of how things are implemented on the 'outside'.Not all of us are going to be Network Admins of an intranetwork. This book covers everything you don't see 'upstream' per say and describes the processes involved in a very easy way to learn.

Again, Don't think twice about this book. This is a must read and it's my favorite of all time.Yes, of all time.It doesn't get any better than this. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars What's the point?
Why would you buy a book like this if not to study for the test?

This book is not enough to study for the test.

    Therefore, what's the point.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is out of date
This book does NOT cover the current subject matter that's in the latest CCNA or CCENT exams. It is well written, and covers topics in a clearer language than many of the Cisco Press books. However,it is outdated, and covers topics no longer on the CCNA exam (Token ring, IPX).I'd encourage the Dummies people to get this otherwise useful book updated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Typical Dummies book
I am a fan of the Dummies books. When I want a quick summary or easy introduction to a technology/industry/genre, the dummies books are usually one of the first tools I reach for.

This is a good place to start preparing for the CCNA.It is obviously dated material and I would prefer a revised and refreshed version, but this got me back in the groove (been awhile since I played in the network realm) and prepared me for purchasing some of the Cisco Press books.

If you need to get your feet wet in the CCNA world and want to keep the reading fairly light, then this is a great place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Referance Guide
This book does a great job of reviewing what you should already know like the basics of networking and teaching you things you don't know like sub-netting. A great tool for any network professional.

2-0 out of 5 stars Plentiful errors
Too many errors in the book, it can cause more frustration and confusion than it is worth. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Scaled down version of the full study guide
This book is basically the smaller, lean and edited version of the Full CCNA Study Guide (ISBN-13: 978-0470110089) also written by Todd Lammle. If you already have good working knowledge and an idea of the CCNA subject matter and need a quick review of the info - pick up this book.If you're new or need a complete end to end understanding - pick up the full study guide. This book is also good as reference material vs. the full study guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent service
I received this item on time and in a good condition. I am happy aubout the service.

    Serge

1-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete
This book is just a chopped down copy of the full version, multiple times you will be reading along and it will say "In the next section I will cover `this' topic", and you never heard mention of that topic again.I found myself questioning the text, and plan to research the errors I found to see if they are right or not.Not to mention, multiple grammatical errors.I don't claim to be an English buff, but this book was horrible...Waste of money; buy the real thing if you want to learn.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Poor Piece of Work
I would recommend you avoid this book at all costs, if you are honestly trying to get your CCNA.The book jumps around, without building a solid base and moving forward. There is no clear IP and Subnetting lessons, before jumping in to question, which do not match up with their diagrams.Spelling errors, and to many other mistakes.I'm contacting the publisher tomorrow to discuss my refund.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Information --- AWFUL Editing
Why only two stars? Because the editing is absolutely awful.

I really didn't want to give a bad review of this book. The writing style is good, Todd Lammle is an authority on Cisco topics, and the information in the book gets right to the point. In this regard, this book is a great secondary source for CCNA information. This book was never intended to be a primary study guide. It is a fast review of important topics. ... So far so good.

The editing is where this book falls off the rails. Entire sections of the book are duplicated throughout, word for word. I'm not talking about a sentence or two repeated in a summary section at the end of a chapter. I'm talking about whole chunks duplicated in separate chapters. At one point I thought I picked up my book and started reading at the wrong spot. Not so. The information on p54 is completely duplicated on p74.

Another example of very poor editing is at the bottom of p152. The information about the purpose of DHCP is duplicated one paragraph below in the broadcast / unicast data flow of DHCP section. It's worse than a simple mistake because it is misleading and confusing to anyone who doesn't fully understand the dhcp data flow.

There are also review questions that simply don't match the answers. An example is question #1 on p137. The format of the multiple choices is simply messed up.

Todd Lamle's full size study book on the CCNA test is an industry standard. I wouldn't hesitate to get that book.

This book, however, is a miserable hack. It's only redeeming quality is that it is concise and focuses on the things you really need to know to pass the CCNA test.

Todd, please edit this book! Three days in the hands of a good technical editor would turn this lump of coal into a diamond. ... Read more

Purchased this as a textbook for an Introduction to Networking course. Only negative is that CISCO is still using Windows XP on ALL their labs. If you are using Vista or Windows 7, you will need to adapt to different screen shots. As this is a thick text, I took it to FedEx Office [formerly Kinko's] and had it spiral bound into 3 sections: 1. Textbook, 2. Labs & 3. Answers, glossary & index. Good basic intro book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Matches curriculum plus extra info
The content goes along with the Academy Discovery course material. It contains extra content. Good student book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great study guide.
I found this guide to be a great addition to the textbook it is partnered with.If I needed extra practice at solidifying my newly learned skills, this was a great aid and help.

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA
Down and dirty information and I mean nuts and bolts, one should consider buying the workbook and Packet Tracer 5.0 (or later) to fully benefit from the text. A great prep tool for a portion of the CCNA exam.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly-Written, ConfusingBook
Obviously the book was written by someone(s) whose English writing ability is very questionable. At many places of the book, the explanation was so poor that I had to google to get a clearer explanation. Many times I felt that the author(s) wrote the book without knowing what they were writing.

Obviously my review may sound too harsh. But if you read the first 10 to 20 pages of chapter 5, you may at least understand why I got to have such a low view of the book. The book needs to thoroughly re-written.

2-0 out of 5 stars Some good information, but lacked too much
I purchased this book because I had previously used Thomson Course Technology in the past and it went very well. However, this book was very limited in regards to the information that I seen on the actual exam. The coverage of OSPF was limited and very short of being reliable.Furthermore, the discussion of discovery and packets was briefly discussed, whereas very important on the exam.On the other hand, the book was very easy to read and it explained a few aspects of Cisco that wasn't covered in other exam preparation books. For this, I gave it two stars.I would highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to understand the very basics of Cisco, but not for the person seeking their CCNA certification. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to osi for technical students
When I say for technical students i mean that this course and the the book are not suitable for the average student who had little or no technical background in computer technology. For those who are use to reading highly technical books with the all so common abbreviations such RAM, CISC, RISC, ROM etc., than this book will go into detail of the layers of network communication. It does not however, go into detail of certain layers(which will be covered in the following books) osi model, but give just enough to wet your appetite and opens your mind to how complex network technology can become.
There are also, some wording issues and a few mistakes that aren't as unusual for any textbook out there though i have to say reading alone wont help you past the online examinations, for that you need to do labs and ask "what if..." and test it.While the text is more focused on understanding the concepts, the tests are more focused on troubleshooting, critical problemsolving/thinking, and analyzing scenarios.

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA 1 and 2 Companion Guide, Revised (Cisco Networking Academy Program) (3rd Edition) (Companion Guide)
Very good book for my University course in Networks and telecommunications, hard to find at bookstores

4-0 out of 5 stars Please with book
I am pleased with the CCNA 1 and 2 Companion Guide. Its a great supplement to the CCNA Study Guide 5th Edition.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor for beginners
Like the previous reviewer stated, this book isn't for everyone. The text is very hard to read due to a lot of jargon that is unnecessary. Most terms aren't even explained until after they are used chapters before being defined. This book also does not correspond well with the online tests very well.

You would think that with a little determination and this book, you'd be able to ace all the online tests. This is not true, however, as this book fails to explain a majority of the test questions. (I actually rely on my instructors notes over the reading the book when necessary)

Don't get it unless you have to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delivery system
I am satisfied with the cost of the book, however, the delivery period was a problem but thank God it finally came.

Michael Kang, CCNP, CCDP, CWSP, is a senior wireless network consultant with the Advanced Services Worldwide Wireless Practice group at Cisco Systems, Inc.

"There are a number of books available for Cisco's 640-721 exam, but by far Henry Chou and Michael Kang's CCNA Cisco Certified Network Associate Wireless Study Guide is in a league of its own. It divides the material into twelve chapters (five parts) and thoroughly covers the information. At the end of each chapter, you have a "Two-Minute Drill" and a test (followed by the answers to such). The minimum number of these end-of-the-chapter questions is ten, with one chapter holding 11 and another 18. There are practice exams on the accompanying CD (making the total set 250), and two appendices on hardware-related subject matter. This makes for one powerful book and the ideal prescription for passing a popular CCNA exam." CertCities, July 1, 2010

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to prepare for wireless exam
To start off let's consider the practical side to this book.In the last 30 days we have had 3 engineers pass their CCNA wireless certification using this book as their primary resource. All passed on their first attempt.Guess that pretty much shows that this book can get the job done.

This book is geared to the CCNA which is entry level and covers a wide range of topics but not in great depth. The depth of coverage is well suited to the level you need to attain for the exam. I found the book easy to read, well organized, clear, concise and accurate.

The book starts with basics of RF and wireless LAN topologies and technologies. The book covers 802.11 b/g/a/n standards, their modulation types, and the encoding methods. It spends a good amount of time on security, encryption, and authentication which is very useful. You will learn about the Cisco Unified Wireless Network Architecture and how the AP and controller perform their functions to provide connectivity for clients and allow them to roam. The section on implementing a Cisco wireless LAN does not go into much detail and just covers the basics of installing and configuring the Lightweight AP, Wireless LAN Controller, and WCS.The book is not intended to make you an expert in this area.It is certainly helpful if you can get some hands on time with the equipment to get more familiar with the menus and tabs so you will know what you find in each area. The book gives you the starting point but you will need to get some experience. Finally, the last section will take you through administrative and troubleshooting tasks. You will become familiar with some "Show" and "Debug" commands from the controller CLI.Again, it is very helpful to get some hands on time to really get comfortable with these topics.

    At the end of each chapter are four sections that are very useful;
    1. Inside the exam.Gives areas you need to review and focus on for the test.
    2. Certification Summary.Summarizes key topics and concepts in the chapter.
    3. Two minute Drill.Bullet points covering each main topic for review prior to the exam.
    4. Self Test.A quick check to verify your comprehension and give additional review of the topics.

What the book does not cover is basic switching and routing.Since the exam requires that you have a current CCNA certification there is no need to cover this material.

The book comes with a CD with practice exams.I will have to admit that I only ran the exam engine once to see how it worked.Seemed to function fine, was somewhat like the Cisco exam, and is a good method to check your knowledge of the material. The CD also has a .pdf with the contents of the book. This can be handy if you don't want to carry the book all the time.

Overall I give this book high marks and found it to be an excellent resource. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Security Exam Cram
I purchased this book to prepare for the CCNA Security Exam due to the ratings I saw at the Amazon store. The book is pretty concise and everything is really well explained. The only dissapointing thing is the fact that there is a chapter not fully covered in the book. That is the Securing Layer 2 devices chapter. To have a full read about that topic, I would recommend the CCNA Security Official Exam Certification Guide from Cisco written by Kevin Wallace. Anyway, the Exam Cram has result in a very good book to read for preparing the exam, which I hope pass in a few weeks.

Hope you find interesting this review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid review the week before the exam
This was the second book I studied from for the IINS exam.

It has good solid coverage of the exam, no complaints there.

I was glad to have this book just for a different style of writing to the official Cisco exam guide. Wouldn't say one or the other was better, just liked having two takes of the same material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide for the Exam
I primarily used this resource to prep for the exam and I passed. It covers the basic concepts necessary to understand Cisco's take on security, and then it incorporates how different Cisco technologies implement the different aspects of the security triad. As a background, I had Security+ and obviously my CCNA before I began studying for this exam.

1-0 out of 5 stars Missing 48 Pages
I started using this book for reading and studying when I noticed....Pages 369-416 were missing.Does this happen very often? It seems like a pretty large blunder.

Other than that, there are excellent overviews of exam topics, and the always handy cram sheet. Also, to the publisher's credit, a pdf of the book contains the missing pages. But you can't print the missing pages, ugh.Whenever I get a replacement book, I'll try and upgrade this review, but by then it will probably be too late.Anything above a single star would be unfair to folks reading this.I hope I pass my exam this week. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
This was just what I was looking for to get started in the basics of Networking.I am just starting to get involved of the tech side of my work area and have been asked to do more to help with our depleted IT dept. With any book though its what you take out of it that makes it worth while I am picking and choosing to cover what goes with my office needs.

2-0 out of 5 stars What?

Look im gonna be real. I bought this book in conjuction with a college course I was taking at the time it was listed as the book to buy for the course. The tests that we took were on-line (the Cisco site). This Book does not work together with the site AT ALL. Just so im not overly biased the book does go over the basics as promised, however unless you are already a CCNA you may find it to be very technical without much explaination. Let me clarify, It seems to go over all the info but when you finish the chapter and THEN take the test as it claims you can. the questions on the test are much more complex. Then lets say that you bomb a test(online) and want to go back over the information in the book. Impossible. you will spend so much time attempting to find the answers in the book until you have an awakening moment where everything is clear, you realize that you cant find the answers, because they were never there! The Biggest problem Is that the Book and the Online curriculum Do Not match up I promise! You can find the anwsers to test ?'s in the on-line chapters on the cisco site but it can b difficult to navigate which is why i wanted a book. 2/5

    AN OVERVIEW:
This book needs to be included in the bon-fire of vanities. it can only be used as a door stop or a drink coaster for Rosie O'donald. It does cover basic information. However, the test questions on the Cisco site are more complex you wont find this book very helpful in that regard. I recommend Todd Lammle CCNA study guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Condition; Great Buy!
Ok, so I know that network books would put most to sleep but, this book arrived in perfect condition and was exactly what I needed / was looking for! Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best networking book I ever read
I am 48 yo and I am studying IT to re-qualify myself to find a new job.
Years ago I studied networks basics but I really didn't grasp the subject.

Now I read this book and I found clear explanations that led me to better understanding what's going on in LANs and WANs.

There are only two chapters that I found hard to follow, because they are heavily focused on the IEEE specifications (that sure are important but also very complex and full of confusing achronyms), but that apart, now I can say that my knowledge about LANs, NICs, MAC, LLC, Hub, Switches, Routers, ecc.. ecc.. is really clear.

It's well written and very useful if you works in IT fields or even if you are curious to understand the fundamentals of networking, that is a very complex subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
When I first saw the title of this book, I thought is sounded too simple. Not sure that I wanted a "basic" book on my professional bookshelf. Maybe "essentials" or "principles" would have been better. But, I took a look at it. When I saw the section on hexadecimal I thought that, again, it might be simple a book. But, it wasn't.

Yes, it covers the fundamentals, but that's what it is for. I would recommend watching the interactive lessons, first. You get a quick dose of information, some of which you might already know. That will probably help speed up the browsing process.

For the intro level material, I'll probably still keep it on my bookshelf at work. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Exam Cram CCNA Voice book good, tests on CD O.K.
The review title expresses my opinion of Exam Cram's CCNA Voice (IIUC/640-460) book. The content is good and includes information I did not see in other books. It may also be shorter or more concise than other books but has enhanced my CCNA-V studies.
The tests on the CD are O.K. but the study mode should include more detailed explanations and information. No labs or configuration exercises are included; these would be very helpful but would no doubt add considerably to the cost of the product.
Overall I feel it was a very good value and recommend it to anyone studying for the CCNA-V (IIUC) exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Results Can Be Achieved
Cisco has broken down the certification track into three more areas that will allow you to hone in on a specified area. They have covered Voice, Security and Wireless. Again CISCO is keeping track of the latest innovations and growing areas in technology. To begin with the CCNA Voice 640-460 Exam Cram is authored by greatly experienced and highly certified CISCO veterans. When opening the book you immediately get a secure feeling that you are about to embark on a journey that will increase your knowledge, experience and most importantly actually assist you in achieving your goal in passing your CCNA Voice certification. They have meticulously broken down the chapters of the books from starting with the basics and building up to the more difficult material.

Included in the beginning of the book is an Exam Cram Sheet which they recommend you review before taking the test.It covers some key factors of what will be on the exam. You get two practice exams designed to aid you in assessing your knowledge of the subject and provides answers and explanations. This is a tool that can be used to help you determine whether you need more hands on training by classroom or more reading up on the matter. While it is not designed to be the only book or means of study that you should use to pass the exam, if you have done your homework and along with your experience you should perform well on the exam.It is recommended that one should make an attempt to install and configuring Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express , Cisco Unity expressand UC500 Smart Business Communications System for the exam is based on this knowledge and skill set.The book starts off with a telephony overview that reviews the basic terminology along with alerting you to what you need to master. Each chapter ends with prep questions and answers for review as well as suggested reading and books that can be used for resources. Each chapter is about ten to twenty pages long covering information that is written in a very comprehensible manner. It is relatively an easy read and contains very useful diagrams to explain thepractically every area utilized in voice technology. The diagrams and tables are designed in a very detailed but simplistic manner explaining most of the components and how they operate.

There are clear cut examples of the prompts and commands that are most commonly used . It gives youtheory on various components, it walks you through details of the Cisco Unified CME and Unity Express software explaining what it is and what it does. You experience installing and configuring the software in graphic detail. The software application is described and each feature of it is explained as well as a step by step how to on configuring it so as to give you a small introduction to the hands on experience that is needed.Again, this is not the only book you will need to pass the exam, however, if you know everything in this book you greatly minimize your chance of failing the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great New Book

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lab Book to go Along with the Course
Switching Basics is the third course of four in the CCNA program. Specifically this book will concentrate on these main areas of CCNA 3:
. Advanced IP addressing techniques (VLSM)
    . Routing protocols,RIPv2, single-area OSPF and EIGRP
. Switching technologies and LAN design
. Switch configurations: security, STP, VLANs and VTP.

The format of this book is of exercises. These vary from 'select one from column A to match one from column B,' to define these terms, to descriptions of optional test equipment you may be using. It's sort of a sample test that is in the form of a whole book. The completion of this book will leave you in good shape to continue with the final CCNA course that follows. The pages are perforated so that they may be torn out and handed in if you are using this book as part of a course.

4-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Intro
good book easy to read..only thing is it is missing a CD...still waiting for it...

1-0 out of 5 stars Squandered effort
This author wastes a lot of time. A significant improvement in writing style is needed to provide emphasis about the subject matter. Some of the examples are very juvenile and child like. Also too many references about 'on the exam this, on the exam that'. This is an obsession with this author, we already know this material and exams are intimidating by nature and you really have to earn it, but this person does nothing to reinforce your confidence. This effort is horrible, I'm not impressed and will not purchase
another book by this author. He should consider writing books for children.

5-0 out of 5 stars GOOD BOOK, IT'S HELPING ME IN MY PROFESSION

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Cisco Basics
I read two Cisco preparation books prior to getting my hands on this one.Wendell Odom did a fantastic job of covering the basics of Cisco networking. If you plan on buying this book for the 640-801 exam, you should also consider his other book CCNA ICND (ISBN: 158720-083-X).Utilizing these two books really clarified any questions I had about Cisco switching and routing. This particular book is very basic and it describes much of the regular networking concepts in first few chapters. It then jumps into subnetting, VLANS and routing protocols. If you purchase the ICND book, these topics will be covered in much greater detail.Overall, the book is an excellent source in preparing for the CCNA exam. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Ok
This book seemed to have decent coverage of the CCNAS objectives. But overall I don't think its the best.I read through the Cisco Press and Exam Cram books for this exam. Then as a final study tool I just used the end of chapter reviews and practice questions from this book.I found a few practice questions that were worded very strangely and didn't make a lot of sense, in fact one question didn't even provide enough information to be able to answer it.I recall reading other things in the end of chapter review sections that were worded very strangely too and more difficult to understand compared to what I read in the Exam Cram or Cisco Press books. On the upside, There was a section in this book on Cisco Secure ACS that I don't recall was covered much in the other two books I read. That and I do like how this books chapters are smaller and focus on one thing at a time.Overall the book did help me perpare for the exam, it just wasn't my MAIN source of studying.
Don't take my entire word for it because I didn't read the entire book, only the end of chapter reviews and questions.
If your going to study for the CCNAS, this book may be fine, but you should buy another book so you have two sources to study from, and more practice questions to use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what the book was originally going to be.
When first advertised several months ago said it would have a IOS simulator. This book doesn't have the IOS simulator although McGraw-Hill in their description say it does. First it was to be out in May then June, July finally came out in August. The book by Richard Deal on McGraw-Hill for the CCNA did have a IOS simulator and was very helpful. Maybe they couldn't get a simulator from Boson. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good workbook if you know the answers
Studying for the CCNA myself I bought this book to help compliment my reading. My only complaint is the lack of an answer key. I would have loved to be able to complete a chapter and then grade myself appropriately to learn. Other than this flaw I feel the content is very good at forcing you to remember key concepts, terms and scenarios.

I have been in IT for over 10 years, trust me when I say that you need to know this stuff THOROUGHLY.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'Work Book' to go along with the course.
Although this book is billed as a 'Study Guide' is is more like what we used to call a 'work book.' It matches, on a paragraph by paragraph basis version 3.1.1 of the Cisco Networking Academp Program CCNA 2 course. But instead of just being descriptive in nature, it attempts to expand your hand-on knowledge of working with Cisco equipment. Here you actually configure a router, not just read about it. And as you go along you are asked questions that can be answered in the book itself. The pages are tear-outs, perferated near the center of the book so that they can be handed in as part of homework assignments.

In the lab section there are some 70 different labs, 55 of these match the ones recommended in the online course. The labs are broken down into three sections Curriculum, Comprehensive, and Challenge which are of increasing difficulty.

After completing the exercises and hands-on labs in this book, you will be well prepared to pass the test and to continue to the following Cisco courses. ... Read more
