Product Description
This book is dedicated to explain CISCO CCNA/CCENT Internetworking routing and switching concepts in a completely new way and to guarantee the gaining of the certification to the reader, with a unique presentation in the field of Internetworking. It uses highly organized, consecutive questions and answers to present the required information like a usual textbook. With more than 820 pages, the book includes explanatory text and provides new types of test formats to simplify both the exam and the presenting of the information to the readers, including over two thousand challenging multiple-choices-single-answer, multiple-choices-multiple-answers, fill-in-the-blank, testlet, drag-and-drop, and simulation test formats. A variety of internetworking scenarios illustrate topics related to CISCO Internetworking fundamentals. In line with modern training and teaching methodology, the purpose of these questions is included to encourage the reader to stop and think, as well as to test his knowledge in preparation for a successful CCNA CCENT examination. CCENT is the essential certification for CISCO internetworking routing and switching track. Understanding CCENT topics and passing this exam successfully, are crucial for those who want to be an Internetworking professional, and it is an easy mission, just follow this book. The current track of CCNA routing and switching contains two exams and two certifications, the CCENT/ICND1 exam 640-822 and the ICND2 exam 640-816. However, it is possible to obtain the CCNA exam 640-802 by one exam and one certification. Now, CCENT and CCNA are the most popular entry-level networking and internetworking certification programs. CCENT certification proves that you have a firm foundation in the networking and internetworking field, and it proves that you have a solid understanding of IP protocol, IP routing, switching, and many of CISCO device's configurations. The book provides in-depth coverage of all official CCNA CCENT exam objectives and uses 2800 router, 1841 router, catalyst 2960 switch, and many other CISCO devices to clarify the required concepts for CCENT/CCNA exam. It also provides an up-to-date information for the newest catalyst 2960-S switch and 802.11n wireless technology. It provides objective-by-objective coverage of all the material the student needs to know for the exam, signaling out critical information, outlining necessary procedures, and identifying the exam essentials. The book is composed of ten chapters. Each chapter treats each internetworking entity with clear, easy-to-follow questions, answers with explanations, text boxes and numerous conceptual figures. The book contains more than 250 figures, and 150 tables. Several test formats are used to clarify the ideas behind each chapter. At the end of each chapter, a list of all commands, which are used in that chapter and answers to all questions, is given with complementary discussions. To make the reader/student more familiar with CISCO exam, which is not requiring explaining the answer, some of the answers are not provided with explanations. However, explanations for these answers can be obtained easily from their questions. This will preserve the reader time by eliminating all repeated information, and it will not waste his/her time by extra statements. To encourage the reader to stop and think as well as to test his knowledge, the answers are not given directly after the questions; instead, the answers are given at the end of each chapter. Even though, to help the reader quickly find the answer, the beginning of each chapter and the answers of the questions of each chapter are given a unique sticker at the right edge of the book. In contrast, an interactive e-book edition of this book is underdevelopment now, to provide a test engine, an online simulation engine access, and an easy way to find the answers for the reader by one book. Adding reader comments are also possible with this new edition. Moreover, this book uses mainly the passive voice way of writing to give the reader strong-straightforward information without confusing the reader by extra-not required statements. This way of writing is also used by, CISCO for device's configurations, and several computers technical books and operating systems; hence, the reader will be more familiar with CISCO device's configurations while he/she read this book. This book is a unique one that is designed to offer both CCNA/CCENT study guide and examination guide, and written using this new way. The book covers essential topics on the Internetworking and security that can be understood, even if the students do not have a technical background. The book is necessary for any CISCO Internetworking and security related certifications. It is designed and organized for absolute beginners as well as for professional in CISCO Internetworking. For beginners to be able to follow the train of thought and to ease the presenting of the technical information to them, the book gradually presents the information using several types of questions and answers by highly organized only ten chapters, and then each chapter is decomposed into a number of sections and subsections. The TRUE/FALSE and Correct/Incorrect types of questions are used to introduce the information easily to the beginners. For those who have a good technical background and ready for certification, the book can be used as a refresher for their information before taking the exam as well as a technological guide. While reading the book, the readers, and especially the beginners may find themselves with a process of trial and error, but this way of learning is important for presenting critical information, and it will prepare the reader directly to the exam, hence, it will ease the preparation for the exam. Moreover, Questions like "Try to decide which option gets in which blank" can be considered as a simulated "Drag-and-drop" type of questions in the exam. The book knowledge is what the student needs to embark on a successful career as a networking professional. It is also a valuable resource for those on the job with internetworking equipment long after they earn their certifications. By understanding perfectly the information presented by this book, Internetworking engineering basics and answering CCNA CCENT exam related questions would be guaranteed. The main questions herein are intended to reflect the type of questions presented on the CCNA and CCENT tests. The book gives the student the right foundation to overtake the CCNA/CCENT exam in a straightforward and easy way with high scores from the first time, by one week, with extreme confidence. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great CCENT Preparation
This book was very instrumental in preparing me for the CCENT exam. After going through every chapter and answering all the questions, I had a strong grasp of the objectives. It took me longer than a week, but persistence and perseverance paid off. I can't wait for his ICND 2 book to become available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read This Book
Thanks to this book and the CCENT boson simulation, I completely understand the CISCO CCENT by one week. This is the first book I have read that uses this way of writing. It simply describes all CCENT topics by more than 2000 questions and answers. Each section of the book is written in the form of questions and answers, which makes the preparation of the CCENT certification very easy. Also, I found it a complete guide and it helped me as a beginner in the CISCO networking.

2-0 out of 5 stars Be careful using this book!
This book needs to go back to the editor for review!

The format is tough to follow.Every paragraph is a question and answer .... even if the author is attempting to inform the reader. In chapter two there is an "extra" question around #39 or 40 and throws the answer key off until question 72.The wording is awkward .... as if it was written in a language other than English and translated without review.

There are quite a few errors in the book.At this point, I do not trust the IP Subnetting chapter since it differes from the number of IP subnets available for use according to Cisco's site ([...]).

I would love to tell you about the remaining 500 pages but I figure the misinformation will kill me on the CISCO exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best CISCO CCNA/CCENT ICND1 exam 640-822 book
All books concerning technology should be written like this book.

This is the best book I have read in terms of technically and simplicity. All the concepts are clearly explained. The CCENT covers a lot of complex concepts, but this book makes them easy to understand by using a lot of examples, and more than 2000 questions and answers. This book is good for a quick learning process, and it is not only making you understand the CCENT concepts very well, it prepares you easily for the certification as well, by one week. Furthermore, I founded it a complete guide. It covers all the required subjects for the certification.

Technically there is no error but there are some editing errors. However, these errors are easy to recover. I would suggest obtaining a simulation software to use as well if you do not have a one year of experience.

Mr. Thaar explains the Cisco concepts, theory, and complex terms in a very easy way. His work is highly professional and great, and I think it is so difficult to write a book in this way. He wrote each section of the book in the form of questions and answers, which prepares you directly into the exam. The questions and answers highlighted all critical information for the exam, so it pays your attention to the information while you're reading this book. This way of writing is truly an enabler for smart understanding of the CCENT certification.

The book is a great one. I believe it is better than any book I have read before. The book enables you to overtake the certification with extreme confidence and surely than ever before.

I highly recommend this book for anyone starting their pursuit of Cisco Certifications or their career as a networking professional. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars used for boson test engine
I used CCNA: Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide: Exam 640-802 to 60% prepare for the exam. I used this book for the boson test engine because for some reason the author's ability to get information to stick in my brain was tough. I used CCNA 640-802 Network Simulator to prepare for hands-on which was about 30% of my time. If you can use this to pass instead of Todd's book, that's great, but the more books the better in my mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cisco Book to BEGIN learning from
Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices, Part 1 (ICND1).

So I thought this book was a well laid out book for what I was trying to get out of it.I am trying to get my first Cisco Certification and wanted something from CiscoPress - as I feel that they have the best book to study from.

I liked how the book was organized and how it progress through the information.I thought the clarity on subjects was excellent.

I wanted the book to have current information for me to study from and I surely does. This is a book on Cisco routing and it reads as such.

I will continue to purchase CiscoPress books as I progress through my certifications - In my opinion they are just better books to learn from.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Content, Poor Editing
All in all a good book on networking. The book could be organized better, 6 chapters over 463 pages makes for a little rough reading, they could have broken it into more, less broad chapters.

The end of chapter quizzes are AWFUL.I scored about 70% on the first chapter, but some of their explanations we're glaringly wrong.I went to the Cisco press website and downloaded the errata for this book, and there are 8 MISTAKES IN THE FIRST CHAPTER'S QUIZ ALONE!There are only 50 questions, COME ON!5 more mistakes in the second chapter quiz...you get the picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Networking Book
I purchased this book towards preparation for the CCNA exam, and for my own learning purposes, to help me in
configuring my own network set-ups and installations.
I liked it so much, its clarity and detail, that I enrolled at SUNY Farmingdale, Cisco Networking Academy and
Computer Science Dept. to learn even more, and prepare myself for a new trade or occupation as a computer net-
working technician; with website programming, design and maintainence as a minor. I already am a hardware and
electronic technician, and this would round out my skill set and enable me to achieve my goals.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the nuts and bolts of computer networking, exam or not. It
will be money well-spent by you if you can apply the concepts in the real world, at home and/or elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars A CISCO CCENT Book
It is a great book, good organized but its not sufficient to complete the CCENT. To pass CCENT successfully, you most read it with books like
1. CCNA ICND1 640-822 CCENT Study Guide and Examination Guide Q&A, by thaar al_taiey.
2. CCENT/CCNA ICND1 Official Exam Certification Guide, 2nd Edition, by Wendell Odom.

5-0 out of 5 stars After 3 books - this was the one.
This beats out any of the books (3) I've read about the subject. This book coupled with ICND from Cisco and some practice with a couple of real routers or simulated should definitely be enough. It was very easy reading - yet informative. Subnetting can be nasty but this guy makes it easy in my opinion. I passed the exam with flying colors as a result. I've lent the book out on three occasions and everyone was happy with it compared to other books out there. I think the secret is that it actually teaches you as opposed to memorizing what may be on the test. I hope this guy writes for advanced exams.
Good luck

4-0 out of 5 stars 924 need I say more?
Ok here is the skinny, I did notice the errors in the book, some of the explanations I had to read over and over as well as check online sources ...This is the recommended procedure for doing anything, I feel for those who read books and expect authoritative definitions.Anyways I picked up this book with no knowledge of Cisco Infrastructure----thats right zippo, I work at a Helpdesk position reccomending products including cisco. This book in a month helped me get a 924 on the CCNA exam.In fact I thought the exam was rather simple. The book was easy reading and I never fell asleep once, unlike tood lammelle's books. So this is the answer, if you want CCNA read this book.Has some errors but that shouldn't hinder your progress any.I WILL be purchasing the BCSN by Mr. Myhre.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENTBOOKFOR CCNA2
This is an EXCELLENT practical book for the CCNA 2 exams.

If there were a LAB EXAM on the CCNA 2 test, this book would be in the same category as that by Andrew Bruce Caslow for the CCIE Lab.

It is the only CCNA book I have come across that TRULY gives you the hands-on experience that you need on the job whilst preparing you for the CCNA exams.

It adopts the same approach recommended by Andrew Bruce Caslow, the author of the best-selling CCIE lab book - "Cisco Certification - Bridges, Routers, and Switchees For CCIE's"(Prentice Hall),through a THOROUGH and SYSTEMATIC APPROACH to configuring and troubleshooting Cisco devices, thereby helping you to understand the practical aspects of what you are learning.

This book would definitely make you feel as though you are in the workplace in view of the many PRACTICAL LAB SCENARIOS introduced in Chapter 5 and gradually built up through to 14.It is also packed full of robust diagrams that help you the learning process.

In my view, this is the BEST CCNA 2 book out there.A SUPERB book for those willing to put their Cisco skills into practice without simply cramming to pass the exams.

Well done Mr Myhre.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wait until the next version
I'm the third person to post a review on this book. The first person said he hasn't read the book but the instructor was great in a classroom. And he posted a review on the book?

I have no doubt the author is a great instructor, however, the errors in this book may not be his fault at all.I understand mistakes will be made in printing, but there were mistakes in the PRACTICE TESTS ANSWERS!Mistakes IN the answers and then in spellings. There are many mistakes throughout the book that will hopefully be corrected when the next edition is published. I'm glad I understood some of these concepts before I read this book.Otherwise I'd be going into the CCNA Exam with the wrong knowledge.Again, I'm not taking digs at the author, but the book has too many mistakes printed in it in the wrong places! (un hem.....the practice test answers)

Also, I was hoping the CD was going to be an interactive test prep software.I was WRONG!It's only a Network Management Program. Why would anyone want one of these when they are PREPARING for a CCNA exam. The book would have been worth the money if it was a test prep CD.

Last thing, the Labs and Scenario's.....were we supposed to buy our own Routers to participate in these labs? How was one supposed to do the labs if we don't own routers, switches, cables, etc.....am I expecting too much from this book? For(this much)...I think not.If I'm not being fair...please someone...let me know. Give me another point of view! I don't think this edition is worth the money. If the included CD was something that would help for test preparations....then it might be worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great instructor
While I have not read this particular book, I took the Cisco BSCN course taught by Robert Myhre. He is easily one of the best technical instructors I have ever had. If he writes anywhere near as well as he teaches, you can't go wrong with his books. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars CCNA prep mistake
This is a good book, but not great, I am an IT professional and use Cisco all day ansd live in the IOS was looking for a book to help me get ready for the CCNA this isnt it.... Look into the sybex book by Lammle

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but lacking
This book is a good resource, however, I found that there were a number of problems with the practice questions. It would be helpful if the book included explanations on why particularanswers weren't right and more importantly that PH would publish errata to the book.It would also be helpful if people who didn't know that CCNA 2.0 is out that they should be buying the newer material. The original CCNA test expired in the summer of 2000.My test comes up in less than 7 days and I'm scrambling to find out what the differences are.Shame on you PH.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't miss the point!
I had taken ICRC and then took a class taught by Mr. Myhre based on thisbook. The 2 courses did not even compare. There were people that had beenthrough ACRC that did not have a good grasp of subnetting until thiscourse.I've seen some of the other reviews saying there are other outsidematerials needed to pass the CCNA exam.I think Mr. Myhre would agree. The point of this book is to enable you to understand the concepts and knowthe basics. It is up to the individual to apply them. And yes, I had acouple of questions on switching on my 640-507.The success rate for the15 person class taking the test and passing the first time was over 75%!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is essential to your success
I bought several books on Cisco and CCNA before taking and passing theexam with a score in the high 790's.With hindsight, I can say that Mr.Myhre's guide was by far the most instrumental in my success because it setthe foundation necessary to make other manuals more readable.

There aremany factors that make this guide essential to anyone preparing for theexam, but for the sake of time and space here are just a few: --All of theexam objectives are thoroughly covered. --I began my studies with only asuperficial knowledge of the subject matter, and found the material highlyreadable and very well thought out.Very rare for a technical manual.

Ihad no problem finding the page numbers, the reviewers who did should eatmore carrots. This book is ESSENTIAL to your success. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Workbook for CCNA Course 1
Networking Basics is the first course of four in the CCNA program. This course is more general than those that follow in that it is not as oriented to Cisco products.

As you might expect, this book starts off with an introduction to networking at its most basic level and continues through things like cabling, Ethernet fundamentals and switching, TCP/IP, routing and the like.

Note that this is a workbook and intended for use along side of the Networking Basics CCNA 1 Companion Guide and of course with the Module 1 online curriculum. The format of this book is of exercises. These vary from 'select one from column A to match one from column B,' to define these terms, to descriptions of optional test equipment you may be using. It's sort of a sample test that is in the form of a whole book. The completion of this book will leave you in good shape to contine with the CCNA courses that follow. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Over priced and over zealous
The book is a great source for one of Cisco's hidden mysteries - the meaning of the individual fields of various show commands and debug command outputs.Other than that, using it to prepare for the CCNA exam the book is drastically over priced for its content. The Two book CCNA Exam Preparation series (CCNA ICND1 & ICND2) by Wendell Odom is a far better buy and closer to the CCNA exam objectives outlined by Cisco. In fact, both of the Odom books together are cheaper than this single book.

This book includes way too much trivia to be useful for the CCNA exam.Eventually you get lost in the detail of what is needed for the test and what the author threw in to show off his knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Do you have one to three years of internetworking experience, are familiar with basic internetworking concepts, and have basic experience with the TCP/IP protocol? If you do, then this book is for you. Author Stephen McQuerry, has done an outstanding job of writing the third edition of a self-study book for those who are pursuing the CCNA certification.

McQuerry, begins with a brief review of the command structure that is used throughout the other chapters of the book. Then, the author explores the operation and configuration of LANs. The author also describes routing operations. He continues by looking at how to configure OSPF to act as a routing protocol within a network. Then, the author discusses the EIGRP routing protocol. Next, he discusses how access control lists are used in Cisco IOS to identify and filter traffic. The author continues by discussing the limitations of IPv4 address space, specifically that these addresses are running out. Finally, he describes how different sites can be connected across a wide-area network or using the Internet.

This most excellent book is intended as a self-study resource that covers the subjects on the 640-816 (ICND2 test) exam as well as the ICND2 material of the 640-802 (CCNA test) exam. Perhaps more importantly, this book should help you become literate in the use of switches, routers, and the associated protocols and technologies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book in really good condition! and has the cd not opened.
I was really satisfied with the book I bought with the CD still in the back of the book not opened so that I can use it with the book itself.

I was really happy about the price I paid for the book also.

Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great!!
[...]

I'm relatively new to the Metal Gear fanbase.A friend of mine bought MGS2 and 3 a few months ago and I watched her play.I was immediately sucked into the storyline and soon enough I was playing them myself, even though FPS is not my usual genre.I got both MGS2:Substance and 3(original) used at GameStop for $[...].Since finishing them, I've wanted to play MGS1 but I wanted it cheap and in good condition.

I was hesitant to get the Essential collection because I already had Substance and the Subsistence in this set didn't have the extras I wanted (namely the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2).I managed to snag this set for $[...], which I consider to be a much better deal considering I already had part of the set.

I haven't played them yet, but the packaging is very attractive and I can display my MGS collection with pride (no used price stickers!!!).

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Textbook
I love these online books. They're cheaper then my bookstore books. Came in time for class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great study tool for the ICND
I purchased this book after failing the ICND when I studied with the Sybex CCNA guide. I highly recommend the Sybex book if you are a networking newcomer. It explains everything in easier terms and does a great job of prepping for the INTRO. I would follow up Sybex with this study guide. After hitting the highlights of this book and using the priorities it sets I passed the ICND.

Also, I wouldn't study ISDN as heavily. I wasn't asked a single ISDN question on either ICND exam. I might have been lucky or Cisco is phasing ISDN out of the exam because it is going out of date.

Overall, this is a good way to pass the ICND.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't But This Item
I have purchased dozens, or maybe hundreds of items from Amazon.com, but have never taken the time to write a review for anything I've purchased. However, I think this is such a terrible product I feel compelled to tell the world about it. I have always felt it is better to have no information than wrong information. If you rely on this product to simulate a real switch or router's capabilities or features, then you will be disappointed beyond believe and may fail your certification test because of it. You will be better served to go through whatever certification preparation book you have and memorize the commands and responses than to trust this product to give the correct responses to your commands. It absolutely, positively does not work correctly. Trust me, this is a certified piece of crap. Please, save your hard earned money. Buy anything else, but do not buy this product. This is a rip-off of the highest order.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Joke of a Router Simulation SW
The first time I used this product, I thought that I might be typing in something wrong. I then attempted to copy actual command line text into the router sim and found that half of the commands were not supported. I went online, and noticed that the majority of the most important commands were not supporte by this router sim software. I recommend that you do not purchase this software. Only purchase software that allows you to fully practice all commands. This is the only way to make sure you can obtain your CCNA and be able to apply it in the workforce. This software does not allow that at all. I am very disappointed in William Tedder's software.

The next issue was with the publisher of this software. I did not deactivate this software before attempting to reinstall it. I was told that I would need to pay $10 in order to receive a new serial number. I have already returned this product and am requesting a refund from Amazon. I am now going to carefully shop and make sure the next router sim I purchase does not have all these restrictions. It is ridiculous to pay $120, to have the majority of the commands not supported, and then to pay extra money to reactivate the product.

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Virtual Lab, Titanium Edition 2.0 Review
Great product. Will help you pass these grueling CCNA test(s). Be sure to use the wondeful documentation that comes with it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor customer service
While the software itself is ok the customer service & DRM is poor. The software had an error that made it difficult to troubleshoot or work with the CISCO 3650 and it took so long to resolve (and find out who was going to resolve the issue) that I passed my CCNA before the patch was issued.

The DRM is awful - while trying to move the software to another PC and following the instructions to remove & re-install the license (getting all the correct messages - no errors) I still ended up being unable to use the software on any PC as the servers said I han't uninstalled the license even though my PC said I had. Customer service just stated that they had no logs of the license removal & basically forced me to buy extra licenses to get the software to work.

I understand and accept the need for DRM and licenses but expect it to work correctly especially when I've paid a lot of money for it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Textbooks for students ... the on cheap.
Product showed up quickly. In excellent condition. I've recommended this seller to all of my co-students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Companion to the Online Material
The online material is fine, but I am a little traditional and like toread from a paper page rather than a screen. I think it's just a matter of what you like.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than Just an Exam Cram
Although this book is centered on the preparation for the reader to take one ofthe CCNA examinations, it is more than that. In reality this book is an excellent introduction into the whole concept behind routing as conducted 'a la Cisco.' It covers routing in general and then gives an excellent introduction into the Cisco products that handle routing. Since Cisco is the largest provider of routing equipment this book serves as a source of information as to just which Cisco products are best suited for your particular application.

Beyond simple routing, which is complex enough, in today's world security is always a problem. This book goes into some considerable details in the descriptions of security aspects, including a full chapter on Access Control Lists to limit who has access to what data.

Of course the book is basically oriented to passing the test, and if that is your goal here is the information you need, including sample questions and more. The CD included with the book has more material, including interactive media explaining some 25 activities visually demonstrating key topics and a Flash-based simulation and visualization learning tool. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars 4th edition doesn't cut it
I ordered the 4th edition, because it was cheaper.I've never seen the 5th edition though. In the 4th edition, they spend too much time talking about 1900 series routers, Pre IOS Version 12 and Pre Y2K stuff. When I studied for the CCNA exam, this book was only 10% useful. It's an OK reference book if you don't have anything else though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is the 1 and only source I used to study for the exam and I passed it on my first attempt scoring just over 900. I found nothing in the book that ran counter to my experience and found it to be thorough and detailed. I did however have 2 years of working with Cisco Routers/Switches behind me before I began studying, so my learning curve was nowhere near that of someone trying to get a "Book Cert" with no hands on experience.

I just was looking through the books and noticed that this it the 4th edition. The 5th edition has the latest info, and Sybex finally has updates on the web site. Great concept for continually changing tests....

* Communications technologyAmazon.com Review
Todd Lammle strikes gold again with a new edition of CCNA: CiscoCertified Network Associate Study Guide which, in point of fact, isn't hugely different from earlier versions but nonetheless dominatesits competitors. This is the best book on the market for bottom-upCCNA preparation, due in equal part to Lammle's thorough coverage (theCCNA test covers many tiny details), his skill in explaining conceptsin prose and illustrations, and his care in designing exercises andpractice questions. All the exam-prep elements are handledcompetently, as well, with annotations supplementing answer keys andplenty of comments about what Cisco expects its test-takers to say, asopposed to what may actually be true.

What's special about theDeluxe Edition? Its companion CD-ROM is somewhat better thanbefore, since it now includes a browser-based tool that simulates aCisco router's administrative interface (it can be hard to set up,though). The practice exam software on the CD-ROM is okay, though itsquestions are identical to those in the book. It would also be nice ifthe software kept track of your performance on exams over time, allowing you to identify and practice weaker subject areas. The bookitself now features a larger and more detailed glossary, and a nicecommand reference. There's no need to upgrade if you have one of thisbook's predecessors, but count on a treat if this is the first LammleCCNA book you buy. --David Wall

5-0 out of 5 stars Network textbook
This is a great book for learning the CCNA material. It will teach you all of the major points that you need to study to pass the exam. Even if you are not taking the exam and just want information on how networks are designed, this is the book. I found it a good read and the practice CD was priceless in learning how to issue commands to the various Cisco routers. A great book and worth the money too!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearify something....5 stars not accurate...
Everyone here critizes<< typos here and there.. lacking this and lacking that... WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND if this book is so bad... remember that next time you write a negative review.. that will help us (the newbies) know where to get this right information....

Thanks~

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointingand frustrating
For the last 3 years I would have sworn by Todd Lammle's CCNA Study Guides; mainly do to his free-hearted writing style that seem to add an element of humor to complex reads. However, this book has far too many errors and lacked technical intensity. In the past, I used Todd's 607 Study Guide to pass the archived 607 exam on the first try.Two and half years later, I purchased the 801 Study Guide with the same enthusiasm. After reading this book twice, taking all 8 bonus exams repeatedly, and exhausting the capabilities of the simulation software, I took the comprehensive 801 exam this weekend and did not pass!My exam had multiple questions that were not covered in Lammle's book. Not to mention the lack of coverage of NAT, that seems to magically show up on my exam.None of which was covered with enough detail within this book. Moreover, the Virtual Lab was not exhaustive and far too basic (No OSPF, EIGRP or NAT simulation capabilities). In my opinion, this is not acceptable. Especially when I was faced with these topics through out my exam.I wish this book did a better job of pinpointing the areas that were and would be crucial on the exam.Although Todd Lammle attempted to do place emphasis on certain points, none of those points showed up on test day.Obviously, Cisco has made the exam harder to achieve by reading materials alone (even there own text). Therefore, accurate and thought-provoking supplemental materials are a must!!The bonus questions simply repeat themselves over-and-over again. The book as a whole lacked coverage on crucial technologies and is filled with confusing statements and answers that turn out to be mistakes- Go figure! All of which, led me to give this book 3 stars (maybe closer to 2 1/2).

2-0 out of 5 stars big disapointment....
Mr. Lammle is still an excellent teacher/writer (the best), but the omission of some crucial material is a setup for test disaster. In particular there is little information on NAT, and zero configuration examples.4 months ago I recertified on the CCNA and one of the simulation questions was NAT configuration and at least 3 multiple choice were on NAT router commands.I am now tutoring 4 other engineers using this book and we've had to use Cisco Press books to cover NAT and other material that is missing. The Simulator in this book will not do OSPF and EIGRP (both crucial, so we bought Mr. Lammle's routersim from www.routersim.com, this does allow these routing protocols, but VTP doesn't work correctly with the simulator switches. In hindsight I would definitely use Cisco Press now, it doesn't appear that Sybex is keeping up.The Cisco books aren't as well written or real world, but they have everything you need to pass the test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written, Full coverage of all topics except NAT/PAT
The author has done a good job in writing the book, which provides detailed explanation of all the topics covered in the exam except for NAT/PAT, which is an important objective of the CCNA exam and you can hardly find one CCNA exam that doesn't test your knowledge in that area.

More enhancements on how OSPF works is needed, since it's not covered clearly in the book.

Other than that the book is enough to pass the test except for the points I discussed previously.

One more thing, the bounce exams found in the study tools CD are very workable, never skip them you may encounter the same questions in the exam. I did!

Understanding the concepts covered on the Cisco Certified Network Associate exam is no longer sufficient to succeed on the test. In order to be completely prepared to succeed on the exam, as well as in your daily job as a CCNA engineer, you must be able to apply conceptual knowledge effectively in a production environment. CCNA Practical Studies is the first book of its kind, providing you with a series of detailed lab scenarios that illustrate the application of key internetworking topics.

CCNA Practical Studies is a comprehensive reference that helps you gain essential hands-on experience in home-, work-, or remote access-based lab environments. An equally effective supplement to concept-based study guides or stand-alone reference for applying CCNA knowledge pre- or post-test, this book presents numerous examples that cover the entire range of CCNA topics. Starting at the physical layer of the OSI model, you use a layered approach to learn how to build a small network.

Each chapter tackles a major subject area such as router configuration, routing protocols, bridging and switching, ISDN, access lists, IPX, and more. Each subject presents a mini-lab, walking you through the lab scenario and explaining in detail the commands used, why the authors chose the specific commands, and the resulting configurations. Comprehensive configuration and troubleshooting labs are added to the end of the book, allowing you to understand how routing technologies interact. This step-by-step lab scenario approach is designed to teach you how to apply the knowledge acquired in the process of becoming a CCNA. Whether you are preparing for the CCNA exam, seeking to enhance your on the job skills, or looking to gain confidence before your next job interview, you will find the lessons laid out in this book invaluable.

This book is part of the Cisco Press Practical Studies Series, which offers readers a means to apply theoretical knowledge through hands-on lab scenarios for key networking technologies. This unique approach enables readers to practice and hone their internetworking skills while preparing for Cisco certification exams.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book. wish there was an updated version of it.
CCNA Practical Studies is an excellent technical guide for CCNA's and other higher level Cisco Professionals alike.

I'm very pleased with this book. I refer to it as a resource and recommend it still today (2008) to students and co-workers as an excellent source of material to get real hands-on experience that is "real-world".Some of the material is dated as of this year and this review.

I'm a CCNP and as such I modify to make up the difference.

I'd hope the author or the publisher would consider a current up to date version if this book.

Cisco students everywhere need this kind of book to become effective Network Administrators.

Good job Gary and Lynn.

Darby Weaver

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs an update, plus corrections of misconceptions
Bottom line: This book is only recommended for people who intend on going further than CCNA as a guid for building a serious home lab, or else those CCNA candidates who already own good router simulator software.

For everyone else, you can pretty much ignore this book until they update it to be fully conformed to the CCNA 640-801 exam.

Read why, below:

This is a decent lab guide on how to set up your Cisco home lab, detailing what sorts of gear you need, how to configure it, and some challenge problems that will not only prepare you for the CCNA, but for real-world work.

By the time you work through the book, you will get setup practice, switching and VLAN configuration practice, routing practice, and even some insight into network design. You will get hands-on experience that reinforces the conceptual learning from the Cisco Press CCNA books and the various CCNA study guides. This lab guide and the hardware will be invaluable in making the IOS commands "second nature" by the time you take your CCNA exam.

Measured against that standard, this book is nearly a 5-star book.It gets "points off" for using the menu based configuration for the 1924 switch instead of the IOS/CLI approach used by the 2950 series switch (the latter is what is on the CCNA 640-801 test).

But there are two very important flaws the potential purchaser of this book should be aware of:The book gets 1 star knocked off because it still has a lot of reference to Token Ring LAN technology, which is practically extinct. It loses another star for having a lot of the content on routing for Novell IPX/SPX, which is seldom seen anymore.

By basing so much material on these two obsolete (and non-exam) technologies, this book loses much of its value. These archaic technologies can be worked around and "converted" to TCP/IP, but this requires a depth that most CCNA candidates will not have - after all, that's why you are looking at this CCNA lab book!

So the biggest cumulative deficiency is that the book is in dire need of an update the entire text from the old 607 exam to the current CCNA 640-801 test standard. This involves dropping all the Token Ring and IPX/SPX activities, and adding more on 802.3 Ethernet LANs, and 802.1q VLAN trunking with an additional switch via the CLI (not the menu!).

As mentioned by others, this book does require access to a lot of lab gear, which is cost prohibitive for someone just starting out in networking. But it's not nearly as expensive anymore. In a pinch, you can use a commercial router/network simulator to do almost all of the labs if you don't mind the limitations such software has.Search Amazon or EBay, there are plenty of software based CCNA/CCNP simulators available, just be aware of the limitations.

If you are just grabbing a book and equipment for long enough to pass the CCNA exams and intend to do no further Cisco certification work, then you probably do not need this book. The most use you could do would be to read it for the examples and solutions, and maybe set up all this in a simulator environment (like the Boson router sim). If instead of a simulator, you want actual hardware that's simply adequate to pass the CCNA exam, then go to Amazon [...], and grab a pair of cheap 2501 routers (with AUI adapters and back to back cables), and a cheap 1924-EN switch, and use them to create scenarios from your CCNA training books.

However, if you are in the networking business to stay, then this book and the gear involved will be the basis for your continuing professional education, providing you with a source for plenty of hands-on experience across a broad range of problems.

[...]I know because I bought one and use it myself in my lab; it connects a pair of 2503 routers, just as the lab says.

Another correction is that you can pick up almost all the 2500 series routers needed to build the home lag for well less than $100 each. The exceptions to this are the 2511-Access router (usually about $200-260) and the 2520-Frame router (about $150-200).

The main switch involved (a 1924-EN) frequently sells for less than $50.Search Amazon and EBay for "Cisco 2501" and similar routers or "Cisco 1924" for the switch.

Note that a Cisco 4500M (sells for about $40 typically) can replace the $200 Cisco 2520 as the frame router/switch, and a2509 (costs usually near $100) can replace the 2511 model for the purposes of this lab, providing the needed 8 serial console connections.

Just be sure to buy the Ethernet versions of the 2500 series routers, not the token ring versions. And remember you will need crossover cables to connect the WAN serial ports, and AUI transceivers to connectthe AUI ethernet ports to your RJ-45 Cat5 network cables.

So, yes, by the time all is said and done, you will have laid out some cash to build the lab.But the cost is not nearly as much as some have said. And remember, this lab will also support you quite well in achieving not only your CCNA, but is a solid basis for your CCNP with the addition of more switching equipment (for VLAN trunking exercises), and will be adequate for most tasks all the way up through the CCIE tests. And you can use it to set up and explore network scenarios as a job aid for your day to day work as a network engineer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Starting hands-on, just what the doctor ordered
I believe the Cisco Practical series, CCNA, CCNP, CCIE is perfect.I need lots of hands on, over and over again.

Yes I can understand from 2 earlier reviewers that in order to really get the maximum use out of these practicals you need access to Cisco equipment. So a great deal of $$ equipment commitment is required. But unlike MCSE, where you can put 2 PCs together and you are off to the races, that is a major decision, no doubt about that.

I have CCNA, CCNP, CCDP and looking at someday doing the CCIE :) :), tougue in cheek. I am not sure how REALLY serious I am but I have spent a fair amount of $$ on Cisco gear.So unless I get a lot of hands on at work, getting the necessary hands on, the amount of practice needed is GONNA be on my own time.So I have brought as many Cisco Practical books as I can afford, and SLOWLY will work my way thru the books/hands on labs.

So I am slowly working my way thru the labs/hands on, and it definitely helps me at work from CCNA PRactical thru CCNP Practicals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maamoun El-Khalil (CCNA)
This is a must if you really want to deepen your knowledge of
the CCNA equirements. It goes beyond the basics and presents you
with a real life lab environment where you can apply what you
have learned in theory and see it in practice.
The book deserves 5 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review - ICND
very practical book for anyone who wants to study cisco product and LAN technology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gets the job done, but be ready to work.....
The new split approach to the CCNA coursework, with the INTRO and ICND books, have provided better organization and a modular breakdown to the information. As a recertification candidate who just completed my exams, I can say that these books are a definite improvement over earlier versions such as 640-607.Odom (or other technical editors) have taken the time to present the information in a building block manner that is comprehensible.I won't repeat the longer descriptions of content that are already present in these reviews.

Two points worth noting:
1.Errata:Always exist with technical books (don't know why the editors can't check them thoroughly before going to print). Some mistakes are indeed frustrating and trivial, which undermine the learning process for future CCNA candidates learning this material for the first time, who do not have the experience to distinguish the wheat from the chaff.Be sure to go to the Cisco Press website to get latest updates for errata (which are still incomplete) as well as corrected/updated test engine modules. Some of the problems people have reported, especially with bad exam questions, are due to failure to update.
2.Whether or not candidates have tested before, all should be aware that Cisco, in an effort to foil "paper tigers", has stepped up the exam effort to represent real world problems.Without violating the non-disclosure agreement, I simply encourage exam candidates to go beyond using practice tests (Cisco or otherwise) with multiple choice questions. These are not enough to develop your analysis skills, and in the real world as well as on the exams, those are what count. If you can't work on a network for exam preparation, then use the sims and labs, and test yourself with the detailed word problem questions at the end of the chapters, not just the "Do I Already Know This?" questions at the beginning. The reviewer who claims in this column that these books are boring and of no use neither understands the nature of certification nor Cisco's intent. These books will prepare the candidate sufficiently if used to their fullest extent.Because Cisco advertises that test versions vary, for obvious security reasons regarding the protection of test content, there is no way to avoid a certain amount of exam overpreparation. But then, we are supposed to be preparing for real-world, are we not?

One final note:My preference in future printings would be to have Odom drop some of the personal humor.Just my subjective observation, but to me, it detracts from the content.

1-0 out of 5 stars No WAY! This is not even close to the CCNA exam
The CCNA exam has very hard VLSM, EIGRP and OSFP questions, that are not even covered close to the depth needed to pass the ccna exam.

not to mention how hard the NAT questions are...

This book is hard to read, boring, and error filled.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers what you need to pass...
Great book for exam preparation.
The only drawback I found was in the VLAN Chapter.
The vlan configuration does not correspond to a 2950 switch.
The configuration will work on a 3500 switch, but the exam will
test your knowledge of a 2950.
Also there is no errata at ciscopress.com

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!!!
After reading the Second Edition I can honestly say that it will prepare you for the ICND test. I think the first edition was written for a different test and even though the information is there you have to really dig to get to it(sorry Mr Odom). It is well illustrated and the IOS screens are very clear and easy to read. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
I have to echo the previous reviewers. I made it about half way through this study guide and had noticed some occasional typos, but didn't think much of it. There were some end of chapter questions along the way that didn't make sense to me, but I assumed that I was just not thinking them through properly. When I got to the questions at the end of Chapter 8, it became evident that there were some big problems. As one of the other reviewers said, now I don't know what info is good and what is not. I've since bought another study guide and I suspect that my efforts with the exam cram book will still be beneficial, but I wish I had read these reviews before purchasing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes
I purchased this book in hopes of using it as the last bit of preparation material prior to sitting for the CCNA exam. However, like the previous two posts, I was shocked at the amount of mistakes and typos thoughout the book.Due to the amount of mistakes, I am not able to recommend this book. This is a real shame as I enjoyed the writing style and layout.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless
I will second the above opinion..this book is worthless. If you're someone who already knows the material, you don't need to re-read it..but if you're someone studying, trying to learn technical information that must be exact, what is the sense when you can't be confident the material you're studying is even correct. It's true, the Exam Crams used to be great, awesome, my only study guides and I always did well, but unfortunately I can't say that know. Not only are they filled with errors, but the books now totally miss the mark when it comes to teaching you what you need to know to pass exams. These books seem to say tell you "you'll need to know this" and "you'll want to study this," rather than actually include useful information.Well Cisco tells everybody what you will be tested on, you don't need an Exam Cram to tell you that. Buy the books from Cisco, assuming they're recent or Todd L's stuff instead, you'll pass with confidence. This Exam Cram is a waste of time, really.

1-0 out of 5 stars Loaded with mistakes....
Well its well written and the chapters flow quickly, but thats the only good thing.Otherwise the book is an absolute piece of s___, There were so many errors that I got the point where I doubted half the answers to the prep questions. The diagrams and command line examples were wrong and in some places mislabeled.I was originally highlighting and correcting the mistakes in the hope of sending them to the publisher, but there are so many its not even worth it.Oh and I could not find any sort of corrections or errata page at examcram.com or quepublishing.com.

Overall, there were so many mistakes I ended up buying Odom's and Lammle's book so that I could doublecheck all the information I was reading.Whats the point of buying a technical book if you only have to buy another book to confirm the information? It's sad because the examcram series used to be so good. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Source
This is a great book for someone who needs a comprehensive and well-written guide for the CCNA course. It is applicable to the new 604 exam as well.Best technical book I have read so far!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book.....
Horrible bookthat makes no sense. I recently bought a router and was looking for a book that could show me how to make some nice wood work. So I jumped on google.com and type in router books and sure enough this book came up. It got some good reviews so I purchased it.... When the book came in I read it just to discover this book didn't even touch the subject of using a router. Instead it talked about protocols and switching. Who in their right mind would want a book on that crap??? The use for this book is for someone trying to get their CCNA or something, which in that case I am sure it is a great book but I just want to drill holes. Do not buy this book......

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, detailed, must have reference
This book goes into details than all other CCNA books. There are some of the typos in the book but it's ok. It has detailed information than the Sybex CCNA Study Guide. The sybex book has enough information for you to pass the exam, too. I used both books for the study of the CCNA exam. This book has 22 chapters and the organization of the book is better than the Sybex one. Expecially the topic on switching, this book does a better job than Sybex. It has detailed explainations, router configuration examples, and some pictures on the demonstration of problems and solutions. One of the drawback is that this book is more expensive than other CCNA books, but you will probably find some places sell it cheaper. It's also a good reference for you too keep after you passed the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent writing!
This book was excellent! It was extremely helpful in taking large, abstract concepts and explaining them in "down-to-earth" language. Mr. Larson had the foreknowledge to refresh the reader on previous knowledge. When I took the CCNA, 95% of the book covered the topics on the exam. Excellent book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Timing is everything.
Robert Larson's CCNA book is well written and detailed far beyond the exam objectives of the CCNA exam. His knowledge of the subject matter is exceedingly evident with each page and each chapter. The drawback to the book is the timing, this book should have been released several months back.
