5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Reference
I found this training manual to be spot on.

With quiet a few years experience and a 3 years since my last MS Exam, I reviewed the material in this book for 2 days before my exam and nailed it.

A lot of reviews I read had people failing this exam first and second goes, but with this book absolutley no worries.

The only part I don't like are the questions with "The solution provides the required result and both optional results" or "The solution provides the required result and one of the optional results"

To me they are pointless as the MS Exams don't have questions stuctured like that.

Well done to Lee Scales on a fantastic write up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real winner of a series!
The first of a 4 book series leading to MCSA/MCSE certification, this is the best training guide I have ever seen.I have taken the Microsoft recommended course, 2274, as well as read several other books and training guides.I am a MCP, using several resources to reach MCDST certification in route to MCSE certification. This book is amazing! The reference section on how the exam is structured is exactly right. The chapters are well laid out, and track the sections of competency Microsoft tests in the 70-290 exam. That makes it very easy to focus your attention on areas where additional study is necessary. The glossary at the end of each section provides additional study opportunities. In addition, the exercises really give a grasp of the materials. Finally, the Fast Facts section at the end of the book is a great exam review tool. This book will stay on my bookshelf long after certification as a tool to help me be a better system administrator.

3-0 out of 5 stars disppointment
I used this publisher for other tests and did well. I really can't say the same for this book for the 70-290. I have taken the actual test twice and did worse the second time. The second time, the test was 200% harder and longer. Many of the questions were not from any of the material that I read and used. The book says to use their exercises and practice tests but that didn't really help with the second tests at all. I've made a formal complaint to the testing company and to Microsoft but honestly don't think Microsoft cares one way or the other. It's their Certification and they make the rules. Using the FAST FACTS at the end of the book an hour on two before the test will do you absolutely no good at all!!
It's really too much money for what you get and there isn't any assurance that the book and disc included will help you. I think that the book publishers should offer the money back if their material doesn't help you pass the real test. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More Background Information than an Exam Cram
There are some books that are oriented purely to getting you to pass the examination. There are other books that provide you with the real knowledge that you need to make a system perform the way it should in a real environment with no consideration being given to whatever the exam might ask. This book is somewhat in the middle, it has practice exams and things like that, but it also gives you the basic information you need with more depth and background than you get in an Exam Cram type of book.

This book is aimed at advanced end user, technicians, system administrators, and systems engineers. It's concern is to help you meet your certification goals by providing you with all the information you need. That includes a sample exam, and an invitation to do some on line testing as well.

There is another book 'MCSE 70-293 Exam Cram' - note Exam Cram instead of Exam Prep. It covers the same material, but in a shorter form. If I were serious about passing the test, I'd buy both books (they're cheap enough). Just the fact that two writers use different words to say the same things sometimes makes a point better understood. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars one of Exam Cram's finest
Ever since I failed my 70-291 test, I've supplemented all my certification studies with these shortened Exam Cram books. They always provide a great summary of what I've learned the 3 weeks or so I spend studying more detailed guides.

This one SEEMED a bit longer than the others, but there is alot of material for this test. Either way, I was able to read it in about a week (just 1 chapter each day, less than an hour), and it really explained things much clearer than MS books. The difficult concepts from the material fully sunk in, and I felt twice as confident for the test - which I aced with an 826.

I've also used the Exam Crams for the 70-291 and 70-293, but this just clearly has been the best so far. It reads very smooth - the author has a natural way with words, and turns simplicity into an art form.

I wish I could give a more detailed review of where it helped me most, but it's been a few weeks now and I'm on to my next test. On the positive, I don't remember any errors - spelling or technical. The study guide I'm reading now has already had a handful of errors in just 5 chapters!

After this book, I am giving much more consideration to using the full Exam Cram study guides for my tests! Bravo to Que - books of this quality should just boost their reputation into outer space.

My thoughts - HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to study for the test
As it says in the introduction, this book does not teach you everything you need to know about a topic, it is aimed strictly at test preparation and review. The authors have studied the test and put together a guide that if diligently worked will almost certainly enable you to pass the test. 70-294 is one of the core exams that everyone gaining an MCSE must pass.

This book contains a number of parts that are designed to provide information on the test. The first thing in the book is a Cram Sheet that provides key facts about the exam. This is a brief document, but covers the general areas with which you should be familiar. This is followed by the main part of the book, broken down into nine chapters. The chapters concentrate on a major area of the test and are followed by a short examination. Following this are the two complete practice examinations and their answers. [...] ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Cover Near Enough Material For The Exam
This was the first MS Press book I went through.I like how Microsoft gives you instructions on how to prepare your server for the labs to follow. The problem is that the labs, and more importantly the other material in the book, do not go into near enough detail in covering what you need to know for the actual exam. When I took my first practice test, there was so much information that wasn't covered in the book.I'm glad I borrowed this from the library instead of paying money for it.In my opinion, the Syngress book for the 70-293 is much more detailed. If you are not taking the exam and want a high-level overview of how to plan and maintain a Windows Server 2003 network, then this might be a good book to start with. However, if you are preparing for the exam and want a book that covers all of the exam topics in detail, look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most of planning and security feature discuss in this book...
As I complete this book, this book was focus on planning the network infrastructure and security feature. But you need to read additional book in order to cover most of security feature in windows 2003 such as the book of Windows Security and Windows 2003 PKI and Certificate infrastructure.

I feel this book has less practice thant the previous exam (70-291).

4-0 out of 5 stars I thought this book did ok for me....
I passed my test using it, but I am a "lab nut" so I tend to do all the labs and then some. I currently hold MCSA in Server 2003 as well and do have experience in it so maybe that's why it just seemed easier for me. My test did cover NLB and clusters quite heavily and this information imparted to me in this book paid off as I was ready. It could go more into GPO's and how to do all the little "ins and outs" of them, I had a couple GPO sims that I kind of winged my way through only because I had done some playing around on our home network in trying to get it all down. So yeah, you'll have your MS bashers on one hand and your MS praisers on the other, so read all the reviews; go look at it in person and see if you think it'll work for you before buying thru Amazon (like I do.... :-) ). Formulate your own opinion and don't neglect the end of chapter questions and scenarios and labs during the chapters.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not great by MS Press Standards
Hey all,

I've used MS Press books for all but one fo the exams I studied for.
I passed this exam OK, but found the material in this book of little or no relevance.
I am not trying to personally attack the authors by any means as the book was well enough written, unfortunatley it just had little to do with the exam objectives.
I would suggest looking elsewhere if you are looking to pass 70-293 up front.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fails to meet the standards of the other books in the exam series
I will agree with one of the previous reviewers: while I thought the Microsoft press books for 70-290 and 70-291 were very well done, I felt that this book has taken a step downward.I don't feel that the author does a good job of conveying his points. For instance, his section on subnetting is awful.I learned very little about subnetting, and had to go to other sources on the internet for better information. As I learned subnetting on my own and then came back to the study questions in this book, I was still getting some question wrong. As it turns out, sometimes the author follows the 2^N - 2 subnet rule, and sometimes he doesn't.It has no rhyme or reason. This is just one example of many similar cases that I've found.

You can read this book and it will be beneficial, but be prepared to look for more resources on specific subjects that this author doesn't convey well. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OK Book, don't use as only reference
I bought this book after failing the first time and also used PrepLogic software but failed. The book helps somewhy but doesn't really go far enough for the needs of the exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I thought the book did a good explaining all the technologies needed to pass the exam. This along with Transcender or some other practice test software you should be ready for the exam. One thing about the book that I found odd - the book ended the last chapter (chapter 10) with this... "In the next chapter, we are going to take a look at how you will implement an efficient IP addressing infrastructure."Huh?My book only had 10 chapters.Maybe Chapter 11 got axed at the last moment???Poor job of editing whatever the case.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good base
This is a good book, it will get you studying in the right direction. The contents do cover what you will expect in the 70-297 test however I strongly suggest that in addition to this book you use an online test preparation tool (I used Self Test). You will need the practice when facing the verbose (-vv) questions on the test.

So after using this book, Self Test software and lots of studying I squeaked by on my first try!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough coverage of the exam material
I've always preferred the Sybex study guides for my certification studies, and this one continues the standard of excellence. The exam is a difficult one, covering a lot of subject matter, and this Sybex guide is good preparation (though hands-on practice is vital too). The authors make a good team -- their study guide for 70-210 (Windows 2000 Professional) is also excellent.Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok book, but don't expect to pass....
This book will help in studying some of the concepts for the 70-215, but will not help very much in passing. Almost all books do not cover what is really on the test( I took test in Dec2002 ). The subjects and wording of the test is different than just about anything that you will encounter in the MCSE/MCSA books.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is the vaste of paper...
... you will not find any usefull information here, for example there are lot of discriptions of how to install services and so on, but no information about what this service is for and how to use it. I ended up buying other book yo study.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not expect this book to help you pass the exam.
Vague. That is the word I use to describe this book. As a fan of Sybex materials, I say this with a heavy heart: RUN FROM THIS BOOK! Run like the wind. The only thing this publication will do is pump your ego to the point of you saying, "God has smiled on me today. I will pass the 70-215 test with little or no effort, for I have mastered much more than what can be found in this great and noble tome. Windows 2000 Server is my friend, and it will not let me down." There is NO detail at all, and the index is HORRIBLE. Maybe the Dummies book would do a better job.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice pics, not enough detail
I planned to use this book as a sole study guide for this exam, however I didn't think it went into enough detail and at times had to use the net to understand some of the features. After using the 70-210 book to pass that exam, I went into the exam feeling prepared after reading the book however quickly found out that the book didn't contain enough info to pass the exam. Its ok to get you started with W2K Server but left me 100 points short on the exam! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, easy to read, but does not cover everything for the exam.
I would seriously recommend this book to anyone who wants to pass the 70-284 exam. Unlike the other book by Microsoft Publishing, this book is very easy too read, and has lots of illustrations and good practice questions. The Microsoft book is way too focused on very small details, like menu items and shell commands, and it does not provide a comprehensive look at the subject as a whole. I spent a week reading the first 3 chapters with all the boring stuff about coexistence with Exchange 5.5 and all the theory, then closed the book put it back on the shelf for good. Besides, the lab practices on the MS book don't follow any specific order, so you'll end up re-imaging and setting up your Virtual Machines a dozen times.

This book, on the other hand, allows you to look at the Exchange infrastructure from above so you can grasp the whole idea of messaging systems, the role that Exchange plays in this market, and its installation and maintenance in the physical world. However, it is definitely not enough for the exam. Reading this book, watching TestOut videos, and using my previous experience with Exchange, I passed the exam with the score of 840/1000 (the minimum is 700), but unlike the other Microsoft exams, I had to use all the 3 hours given, and review all questions 3 times before I clicked Finish. Later when I checked the Microsoft book, I found out that most of the exam questions are covered.

So if you're studying alone and you want to be totally confident before giving the exam, this is what I recommend you to do: 1. Set up 2 VMs on your PC/Mac, or if you have more than one computer, create a small home network to play around with; 2. Read the Sybex book thoroughly and do all the tests, experiment with your network as you read; 3. Scan through the Microsoft book and review all the material that the Sybex book has missed, do the exercises; 4. If you can get hold of a video course, spend a day or two going through the videos as well; 5. Register for the exam and spend another 2 or 3 days doing the MeasureUp tests that are included on the CD inside the Microsoft book.

Good Luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars A good second source
I read these book, worked every exercise and even supplemented this with training from the [...] and it wasn't enough to get to exam passing level. I ended up using the Microsoft Press book which was much more accutate to the actual exam, and provided more real world exercises that I run into now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reading book ..
This books covers 70-80% of the exam, i have not taken it, but i took the Te..Ou.. videos and those had more info on some topics.

It's a great book to read and learn exchange, the topics are well described, but some do need better in depth knowledge to really understand the backgroud of exchange.

I must support another reviewer saying that you must have a good understanding about windows 2003 core tech.. since i have read those, i had a pleasently great and simple reading this book.
But, i will also go with the cbt nugg.. videos and practice, before taking the exam.

This is my first exchange book and i'm confident that with the other 2 video courses and practice.. i will pass the exam. Just remember, this is the last exam you would take for a MCSA or MCSE certification.

Compared to the blue book, it's not a bible.. but the only book i need (with my practice).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, and not only for passing the exams!
The book is well structured and organized.Topics are introduced in a easy-to-understand fashion and they are explained and broken down step by step so the reader can easily understand.

The Q&A section after each chapter really test your knowledge on each chapter and not the mention the bonus exams questions and flash cards on the CD, which will put you in exam mode - you still need additional Q&A materials though.

Overall, I can't complain, this book will serve you well in preparing for the 70-284 exam.

Of course you should use other cross-ref materials (text, video etc.) for enhancement, clarification, etc. It's also good to have a primary 'video reference' (such as CB* N*gg*ts or T*stO*T to use side by side with this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty well written
Overall I think this book is well written. It will get you well prepared for the Exchange exam. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Item!!!
I have received this book in quick time and in great shape. I am so happy with the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn a few things on this book
This is a pretty good book. I purchase the pdf version to keep on my laptop for quick reading.

I went through the Active Directory chapter and picked up a few different setups, which I never seen in other books. You'll also picked up new things from other chapters as well.

I highly recommend this book, since it will teach you that next level of AD you'll only get from working in different environments or companies.

I also took the 70-297 exam and passed with a 940 score.

This book along with Q&A from testking or other sources should have you ready for the exam.

Recommended in your admin book shelf for sure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Condition Book
Book arrived on time.Tracking showed it was shipped from VA, instead of TN as was stated.Book was in stated condition though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This is a well written and well presented book. It helps the reader decide which options are most appropriate to his/her scenario and includes lots of new information relevant to Windows Server 2003.

The book goes beyond the bare minimum information needed to pass the exam and instead offers lots of additional tips and useful pieces of information which the authors have no doubt acquired through their years of experience in the world of designing Active Directory solutions.

Thoroughly recommended! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for review!
Great book even if outdated. An excellent reference source to fall back on to get more plain english explanations of what it's talking about. Quite unlike the Microsoft Press 70-270 book which is like eating a dictionary sideways! Although the Microsoft book is also highly recommended. I'd start with the Passport book first!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good exam prep but falls short for 70-270 mastery
It is not the text to learn everything you want to know for the 70-270 exam. There are other books that are much thicker and more comprehensive that will do that for you. As with the other Mike Meyers books, this is the "Reader's Digest" or "Cliff Notes" version of the material. I used the Mike Meyers Passport series for the A+ and Network+ exams and found them the best review available for the exams, but this Passport falls short of that. It lacked information in the "domain" areas and some of the newer capabilities of SP2. It was too focused on workgroups and fell short in the corporate domain areas. The CD practice exams didn't map very well with the questions I found on the real exam.

Mike Meyers XP Professional Passport still has value as a review to be used with other books. It is well organized, straight forward, and fairly well written. It is worth the price and the 15-20 hours it will take to master the material. I passed the 70-270 exam on the first try by a decent margin by using Mike Meyers along with two other texts and an on line class. This book, by itself, will not get you to the finish line.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is outdated, but will still help you pass.
The Mike Meyers Passport series is excellent for certification prep. This is my third certification I've passed using these books, the other two being A+ and Network+. I took the 70-270 two times before realizing there was a Passport book for the test. I failed the test both times. Then I discovered this book, bought it, read it, and passed it the third time around. Passing is what matters the most, however I didn't get as high of a score as I wanted. I received a score of 715, with a passing score of 700 for this test, which means I barely passed. I believe the reason this happened is because the book has not been updated to include anything about Service Pack 2, or Bluetooth technology (yes, the test asks about Bluetooth). Also, the book seems to center around Windows XP Pro in a workgroup environment. However, the actual test mostly centers around XP Pro in a corporate domain environment. This book will still help you understand XP Pro since most of what is covered is still valid, but the test has changed since the book was published. I recommend this book only if you combine it with sample test questions from Testking.com. The questions provided by them are word-for-word from the actual 70-270 exam for both the questions and the answers that are given (I question the legality of the study guides provided by them, but obviously they must be legal since they have not been shut down by Microsoft or any of the many other testing companies they provide study guides for). If you get the questions and answers memorized, you will speed through the test while passing it with flying colors. I used the Testking materials myself, but didn't read all of it because I decided I'd rely mostly on this Mike Meyers book like I did with the CompTIA tests, though I now wish I had read the Testking study guide all the way through. The Microsoft tests are much more difficult than anything by CompTIA. In all fairness, I still passed and could not have done it without this book, so I give it 3 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Similar to...
I read through this book in a fair amount of time. Most of the details were on the money. This book and exam is very similar to the MCDST certification offered for XP.This book gave me a few extra "hints" that I could have used when I took my MCDST.Overall, this is a good book for this exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can pass with this book!
I estimate that book covers 90% of the exam.I believe the only other resources cover the other 10% is experience and plenty of time on microsoft.com.I will also say that this is by far the toughest Microsoft exam that I have taken (12 of them and counting). If you know this book well and you are a good test taker, you will pass this exam. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This was the second book I used to prepare for this exam. I left my school program early to take a good job, and this is one of the courses I have done completely through self-study. This book was a great resource. It had a lot of exercises and practice material at the end of each section. Depending on your comfort level and experience, you can either rip through a chapter then skim the questions at the end, or as was the case with some sections for me, it was all new and I took my time and worked through every exercise.

Michael Aubert's writing style and the design of this training manual was extremely easy to use, and to read. The review questions, case studies and activities help to solidify new concepts in a real and concrete way. This book is an excellent certification manual.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book needs Proofreading and Labs need Validation!!!
In my opinion, the authors seem to assume that their audience should know a lot of what is going on.Most of the self-study certification books that I have read will tell you what is required to truly practice the labs as you read through the book.

This book does not tell you what and how many boxes you need, it does not tell you how to configure your volumes, it does not tell you that you should log onto the server over the network except when you are doing some administrative tasks.Because of this, many of the labs are not working according to how the authors said.

Another thing that I found is that the book has many mistakes. The labs seem to not be correct and do not match the explanations that the authors gave.

Recommendations:
(1)The authors should go back to the beginning and state what hardware is needed and also the configuration that should be used. Let the student know that they need to have Server 2K3 installed and Active Directory and DNS configure.

(2)Each exercise's introduction should inform the student whether they are to log on interactively or over the network.

(3)I believe that the book needs proofreading and the labs all to be done carefully documenting the results of each lab.

(4)The authors point to data files that are to be copied from the cdrom but there are no data files on cdrom.

Because the book lacks these and with the contradiction between the labs and the explanations, it leaves the student doubting what they have read.So taking the Microsoft certifications using this book alone as a study guide is not comforting but instead stressful.

Just my opinion for improving this product.

Thissystem gives you 100% coverage of the official Microsoft 70-290 exam objectives plus test preparation software for the edge you need to pass the exam on your first try.

In June, 2003 Microsoft will launch beta exams for the Windows Server 2003 certification line. Exams will likely go live the following August and September. This launch is a comprehensive revamping of the MCSE (Microsoft Certified System Enginner) track with all new core exams and all new electives. In addition, the MCSA (Microsoft Certified System Administrator) certification will expand its program to include an additional upgrade exam for MCSAs wanting to become MCSEs.

The launch of this new certification track means that all current MCSEs, representing an installed base of approximately 200,000 (source: MCP Magazine) will need to recertify under Windows Server 2003. In addition, any MCP looking to become an MCSE--estimates are about 1.2 million (source: MCP Magazine)--will also have to continue their certifications under the new program.

Many industry experts expect the Windows 2003 certification, and product line as well, to be a more popular track since many organziations are still using NT and plan to skip 2000 and go directly to 2003.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good book
This is a very good book for the 70-290 test. The complaints about subjects being left out of the book are valid, but Microsoft is careful to tell all test takers that some material on the test will come from the Microsoft Knowledgebase and from TechNet articles. If you are concerned about the coverage of material, go to the Microsoft certification web site, print out the test objectives for the test you are studying for, and make sure that you study something on each of the test objectives. There is no one book that can or will cover the entire depth and breadth of this test, but this one comes close. It is written for someone that has little or no experience with Windows Server 2003, and covers each topic rather completely. Some more advanced users will object to that, saying that it is too basic or too wordy. They should use a "test prep" book (something from Exam Cram series, for example) rather than this book. If you are starting from near zero, this is a good book for you. The videos are helpful, but I wish they were podcasts so that I could listen to them while I am driving.

5-0 out of 5 stars First of Many I Will Purchase from This Seller
I received prompt communications and delivery and plan to purchase additional books in my quest for MCSE certification.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best book for the exam
I was really frustrated because there are no good books for this exam, which is really complicated.

No book will cover all the information required, but definitely the best book is this one.
What is interesting is a section with FAQ in each chapter.
Most of the questions are really nice.

What is missing in this book for the exam ?
- More information about SUS
- More information about AD
- More information about Group Policies
- More information about VB scripts for automation
- It would be nice if the questions were similar than the exam.

Anyway, this one was my favourite book for the exam.
I passed it with 887/1000 and I did not have to much experience on win2k3 servers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
Not even getting out of the second chapter I've run across more than a dozen typos and other errors. If I had known there were so many I would have marked them all and sent them to the publisher. Some topics are not even covered.I have thrown this book away and bought the Sybex 70-290 study guide instead...Sybex Study Guides are the best I've found.

If you want to learn this information correctly, do NOT use this book.Their technical editor should be fired.

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and Disappointing
I purchased this book based on the strength of its recommendations here. Now that I've taken the test, I'm disappointed.

The book appears to be out of date as several topics that were on the exam are NOT covered in the book.

Microsoft has added things on Software Update Services, Distributed File Sharing, and Scripting to the exam that are nowhere to be found in the pages of this 977 page tome.

In addition, I found several things that conflict with other study guides, Microsoft's published materials (MDSN, TechNet), and the Windows Server 2003 help files.

Although the book has a set of practice questions at the end of each chapter, in many cases their "correct" answer was wrong (based on additional research and conversations with other MCSA/MCSE's).

When I wrote Syngress asking for an explanation about the discrepancies (twice), I never received a response.

I'd recommend you look elsewhere if you hope to pass. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Great book!
I loved this book, it does prepare you for the exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars I could have used this to pass the exam.
In my quest to pass the 70-214 exam I had very little material to work with and even less to practice with. Sybex has released a book with over 80 exercises and 200 practice questions that will certainly making taking the 214 exam a little easier.

First let me say that the 70-214 exam is by far the toughest exam I have passed or taken, this book is written by 2 people who certainly have an in depth understanding of the world of Windows 2000 Security.

Taking you on a path that starts of with the basic of group policy configuration and works you all the way through the updating and management of the security system, including auditing, you have a very complete study guide to work with.

The coverage of the certain areas like the MBSA is great and the exercises make it easier to understand the use and purpose of the utility. I found the question to be very close to the actual exam, but I think more case study type of questions should be included as a separate test prep section.

The cd include also has a great number of questions and practice test. What I found missing was the MBSA utility, which means you have to find and download it from Microsoft's website. Also they could have included other security type of utilities for help in the real world, but that can be included in any updates.

Overall, having passed the exam in January, this book certainly does what it's designed for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have!
This is one of the best books about networking ever written. Filled out of ilustrations, charts and examples, it also comes with a usefull CD-ROM with animations (Avi files) of the examples given in the book. The language used is simple and goes straight to the point. Excellent to those who are studying to the MCSE certification, and also 100% useful to all people who wants to learn more about networking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Passed with 1000
This book provides a good overview. I used this book and the MCSE Core Exams in a Nutshell and passed the test the first time. The book is easy to read and understand, with good chapter questions for review. The textprovides the vast majority of the information to pass the test in astraight forward manner. I found the book to be quite accurate. The bookcould have used a few more Situation Scenarios. If you're looking for ahighly in depth book about networking this is a good start. However, ifyou're looking to pass the EXAM, buy the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars I found it confusing!
it is not a bad book, but first of all it is not enough for passing the test.Second the book is not really clear and the information sometimes contradicts other informaton on the same book. For a beginner like me itwasn't a good book, and hence I dont recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pulled it all together
I thought this book was a good overview.I used this book and the Transcenders and passed the Net Essetials test the first time. The book is relatively easy reading, and the chapter questions are a good reinforcementto the text. They definately let you know how much you absorbed while youwere reading.Overall, I found the text to be pretty accuate. I however, felt like the book was not very effective in teaching trouble shooting (ofcourse this is the area I fell down on during the test). I would recommendit for any beginner, but use something else too!

I've read the reviews on this book and understand why the MCSE certification ranks are filled with many idiots. There is no way you can rate this book lower than 4 stars and be credible.I searched for andpreviewed all available books and found this one to be the only one toprovide a truly "cliff note" style. It includes just enough infoto substitute for a text, yet you can easily skip right to a completesummary.Yes it does have an error on one question but, it's so obviousthat it does not overshadow the rest of the benefits.Anyway, it is a plusthat it does not have many practice questions! You should be taking thoseonline at CheckPoint MCSE anyway!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Read this the last few days before my Net Essentials exam and scored a 933. Breezed the test. It is an excellent last minute read to prepare for the exam. So much so, I am buying the series for each exam I take. Thewhole series rocks...

4-0 out of 5 stars This book helped me to pass the test 833
This book has great generic questions and great explanations. The test covers WANs and Protocols and troubleshooting and network emplimentations. This book explained the meaning behind many of the questions. However noneof the questions in the book were on the exam. The psychology behind thequestions was covered. This book is for test review you will need others. Iknow networking, but I passed the test because of this book! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A bit much
Unlike the others here, I have to say that I really can't stand this book.I've been using computers for over 10 years and know them fairly well.I recently took this book for a college course and to me, it was over the top.Too much about Vista's flash and flare, too much about features very few business actually would use, and it was overly technical. The labs are fine, but if you get the model with the Cert Prep CD it was just annoying.Maybe it's just me, but I find the majority of "Thomson Course" books to be really poor.I picked up some other books that were not done by Thomson and I think the information I took away from those books was much more satisfying.

I can't believe colleges are actually using this book. What business in their right minds would be using Vista as their main OS for computing...

So my opinion:Get yourself a better book. Maybe something from O'Reilly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for college use
I just finished up a semeseter using this book for managing a windows client. The book activities are pretty good and it does a good job explaining the Vista operating system. It's a good buy if you're planning to use it for a college class or any other reason.
