1-0 out of 5 stars Skip this one...
I'm a skilled I.T. professional who finally decided to finally get off his !@#$%^! and get his MCSE. Out of all of the books I got to study with, this one supplied the least amount of help. I like the way the ExamCram books flow, however this one was seriously lacking in a lot of the information that was on the MCSE test. I failed the 70-284 test *twice* using this as my only study material.

Oh, and it helps if there weren't so many errors (spelling *and* content) in the book as well...

For 70-284? Stick with Microsoft Press. A PAINFUL read, but the content is solid...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Used this book and practice exam software to pass the test first time - the material is concise and well-ordered. It also helps if you can install the eval of Exchange 2003 version in a VM to step through the procedures outlined in the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Far Too Basic
Other Exam Cram books are pretty good, but this book is the exception. It is far too general and seems copied from help files. The index is limited, e.g. only one reference for global catalog, and the over author's knowledge seemed questionable when he documents requirements for a global catalog and a domain controller (page 17) and fails to realize a global catalog is a domain controller.

The quiz questions are far too generic and simplistic, e.g. what tool do you use to enable mailboxes? On the real MCSE exam, they delve into infrastructure design including routing groups vs. Active Directory site, and far reaching questions.

I couldn't really recommend this book, especially after being spoiled by official Microsoft material, such the one by Orin Thomas (ISBN 0-7356-2136-5).

4-0 out of 5 stars not bad if you want to simply pass the exam
This was the only book I read before taking Exam 70-284 to become MCSA: Messaging 2003 certified, and I scored an 850.The book covers the essentials that you _need_ to know, and it was helpful to go through the scenarios and actually play with the server in a Virtual PC session.

Beefs:
* not enough exam questions. This book comes with end of chapter, then end of text questions, which are at least as difficult as the exam will be -- so you better answer them correct most of the time. The CD only includes 60 questions, it would have been helpful to have more, however you can give PrepLogic money and they will give you more practice exams.
* Not enough emphasis on routing; the exam I wrote had 6 out of 30 questions on this topic.
* numerous factually incorrect situations in the text: sometimes as simple as the proof-readers missing the change from Windows 2000 -> 2003 (DOH).

All in all if you just want to pass the exam and buy just one book, get this one.If you really want to learn the software inside and out, don't count on this book as your sole source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice prep guide
ExamCram books have gotten a well-deserved reputation for being lightweight and insufficient as a primary study guide. This book is an exception to that rule, however; it is much thicker (almost 500 pages) than most in its series and more comprehensive. I attribute much of that to co-author Orin Thomas, who also co-authored the Microsoft 70-292/70-296 and 70-299 Training Kits, two of the best study guides I've used yet.

This book has well-defined chapters, ~10 practice questions at the end of each chapter, two 60-question practice exams at the back of the book and a third more-detailed practice exam on CD. All practice questions have detailed explanations of why the right answer is right and why the wrong answers are wrong.

I highly recommend this book for the 70-284 exam. Don't let the fact that it's an ExamCram book scare you away, as this is a big cut above the rest of the books in that series. ... Read more

This product was good and in great condition just as said. Came within time limit. Would buy from again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent.
Well written and flows well. The CD is just about worthless, and makes a very good frisbee. The questions are somewhat pathetic and the diagrams suck. But the book also has a coupla good practice exams at the end of thebook.Go over those, and you'll be fine.If you have networkingexperience already this is a good book to get.If you have little or noexperience, this is definetaly not the book to get because it goes too fastto learn the material. It's meant to be a review before the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars I ONCE WAS YOU!
I read this book from cover to cover and passed with an 800. I'm sure I would have done better if I had waited and took another Core test before hand but thought I'd go ahead and take a shot at it anyway and BAM! Therewere a few mistakes in this book but very few and not any critical ones(alot less than any other books I have read). I'm amused when I read thesereviews on how this book doesn't have all the materials in it. Remember, that's what it's designed for! This book gets to the point and if youfollow their system and studying recommendations and stick with it youcan't go wrong! I actually looked forward to reading this book. I HIGHLYRECOMMEND you BUY THIS BOOK! and definetely buy that other fat book withall the details too. Let me mention that IDG Books accidentally packagedthe wrong CD and when I e-mailed them about the situation they promptlyshipped me a new one ASAP. I also called Amazon and their customer servicewas Top Class (Amazon just sent me all the 4 Core books to make sure I hadeverything taken care of, WOW! Can't beat that folks! . Thanx for yourservice's!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but throw away the CD
Of the five "MCSE for Dummies" books I've purchased, this one has been the best.A couple minor obvious errors, but fewer than in the other books of the series.Between this and the "Core Exams in aNutshell" you'll do great.

The CD, on the other hand, is only goodfor target practice. The sample test questions on it were poorly wordedand the diagrams looked like they were drawn (badly) with some primitivelow-res monochrome editor.I was supposed to identify what kind ofconnector this thing was, but it looked more like a broken Fruit Loop thanany connector I've ever seen.I still don't know what the dang thingwas.

And the "QuickLearn" game to build test taking speed...well if you've got a week to develop the hand/eye coordination required tobecome competant at this Asteroids-like game then it might be just fine foryou.I, however, ran out of patience when it took me half an hour just toget the blasted space ship in the dock so I could get a shot at answeringone question.

4-0 out of 5 stars A helpful portion of the material needed for exam prep
The book is well-written and edited.Content seems a bit 'thin' in areas (as with a similar book for prep for this exam), but that is probably due to the nature of the exam and its material. The practice exam included with book may be helpful, but there are others that are much better.

The exam covers quite a bit of material and skills, so plan to include other study materials in addition to this book.

Even with its weaknesses the book is a good value.

I like the exam cram books I use these for any ms exam that I take and recommend it. It quick and easy to read not to much detail I like the summary sheet also.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just OK
After reading both this book and the 70-297 Sybex book, there is no comparison. This book does not cover anything that you don't already know if you are on the MCSE track. It seemed to be more written for someone that is just taking this exam... and hasn't studied anything for the other 6 exams in the MCSE track. My advice, spend the extra $ and get the Sybex book by Brad Price... it will be money well spent, and you may actually learn something you don't already know... 5-0 out of 5 stars Chalk another one up for Sybex!
No single book will enable you to pass any of the Microsoft exams, but I've had the best luck with Sybex. The key is really the CD - it has a copy of the book in PDF (you don't need the CD to run it, you can copy the pdf to a flash drive and carry it with you), and the electronic tests allow you to quickly review all of the chapter exams (200 questions total) plus 100 additional questions. Retaking the exams over and over is what allows you to pinpoint your strong and weak areas. You will need to supplement the text with online resources, but this will be the case for any book. One problem area - the book covers SUS but this is now obsolete so you need to study WSUS.I've used Sybex as my main study guide to obtain my Network+, MCP, MCDST, MCTS, and now I just passed the server exam on my way to MCSA. I also recommend the Microsoft Press book for this exam. I give a thumbs down for the Exam Cram one. Good luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars dont bother
Poor labs, skips vital information and not that well written. I would say this book is at best supporting reading. Skip this and go straight for the Microsoft press book which was 99% right on for the exam and MUCH more practical for the real world.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Thought it is the 2nd edition, but not.
Still a good book, good deal for the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Starter Book
Firstly, let me qualify why I gave this book 4 stars - especially since I don't think its enough to pass the exam by itself. To clarify, this book is missing some detail, and mostly covers the basics of the operations.

Despite this, it covers the core material VERY well. The book is well written, and the author does a good job keeping it an interesting read. Its clear, concise and gets straight to the point. There is little BS or filler information and, while a little repetitive, the lab exercises get the job done.

Now like I said, this book doesn't cover anything. If you only read this book alone, you will probably not pass. The Microsoft exam was very detail oriented, and it will require more reading and lab practice in addition to this book.

I also read the MS Press book, and while more detailed, it was a horrible read.I had trouble getting through the MS Press book and the information did not flow as easily from it.Nevertheless, I would recommend getting the MS Press book or another source to supplement this book.

Also, I'd highly recommend extensive lab training or computer based training.I used CBT Nuggets, and it was an exceptional resource.

About the exam:

The MS exams are less straightforward (more tricky) than other exams that I've taken.I hear people often complain that they narrow it down to "two possible answers", and have trouble choosing between the two.If you encounter this problem, you aren't reading the question carefully enough.Almost every question like this that I saw had a small detail that would eliminate all but one answer. Not one question had two "correct" answers.

The questions are also a bit more wordy than other exams, so if you aren't the most patient person you may have some trouble.Once again, its important that you look over the details.

While I can't violate the NDA, I can say that a good portion of the questions fell within the core of the objectives. Most were very routine questions that involve average day to day tasks for an Administrator. About 5%-10% of the questions, however, were only LOOSELY related to the core objectives. For instance, the disaster recovery objective could extend to any service in the active directory.Do you know how to backup/replicate/transfer data from ALL the services that are integrated into active directory?Probably not.I was very lucky to have seen these things before, but they were so obscure I doubt most people have even seen them (let alone know how they work).

Also, I have a feeling most people will be unprepared for the automation objections. No one really uses them.Just a wake up call to all of you, they are on the test (its in the objectives!).If you don't know exactly what these automation tools do, you are going to have a hard time.Do you know the format differences, and do you know the functionality differences of LFIDE vs CSVDE vs AD Users and Computers? These tools aren't very automated (too much manual labor for supposedly automated tools).. so no one really uses them (Much easier to use user data to produce dsadd or dsmod scripts).Either way, you should learn the details of all the automation tools.

I would definitely set up a lab, or use CBT training videos.Reading alone isn't going to be enough, especially for the simulations.

Finally, you NEED practice questions for this test. Its coverage is far too broad, and you need to make sure you have all areas of the objectives down pat.Its easy to have some wrong ideas about permissions, and/or group scopes and not realize it until you are tested. If you have a problem like this (especially in these areas), you aren't going to do well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good study guide if...
You combine it with other methods of study. DO THE LABS- if anything, do the labs in this book as well as the MS Press book. The labs aren't as technical as the MS Press book but nonetheless will definitely help you in remembering steps to take when working with permissions, RAID settings, and so on. I used 3 books for my studies, and felt I got an overall well rounded foundation for taking my exam. I'd suggest NOT using just one book, MS Press is pretty technical, this book lays it out in more easier to understand terms. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast Shipping
Good seller, very fast on shipping got it in about 4 days

1-0 out of 5 stars I would give this book less than 1 star if that was possible
I agree, this book is written like a dictionary that has been copied and adapted from other dictionaries! It is extremely dull and of very little value. The questions at the end of the chapter are ambiguous and obscure at best. This book has aided in putting me right off Windows 2000 server, in fact I think I'm going to go over to Linux ;-)

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible.....
I received this book as a text for a class I am taking.I have been working with Windows operating systems for quite a long time and was surprized and amazed at the horrendous quality of this book.I have read quite a few books by this publisher that were clear, concise and valuable sources of information. After getting to chapter three in this book, I was very surprised with the quality of this product.MSPress and Sybex do a much better job with Windows 2000.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't begin to say how disappointed I was!!
Can I rate this book with "negative 0" stars. The publisher hires writers and not IT professionals to write their books. This book is so full of errors I could not even use it. This book will do nothing but confuse you. I judge a book by how accurate the content is inside. This author obviously knows absolutely nothing about Windows 2000. It seems to me that he copied from a bunch of notes that he compiled from the internet or someting. My sincere advice, stick to Sybex. They are the real IT book folks. Their books are accurate and won't let you down.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mrs.
While reading this book I got an impression that the author does not have any practical experience with the operating system but merely paraphrases what he has heard from others or read about it. Some of the elementary concepts are explained in a way that it makes them difficult to understand and remember for the test. An example is when the author explains the difference between SLIP and PPP. In other places, the author cuts his explanations short leaving the readers confused about the subject. For example, while talking about the VPN server the author points out that it is used for connections to the network through the Internet using PPTP or L2TP. Then he gives some screenshots and directions for installing this server, but he never explains why do you have to enter a range of IP addresses into the server setup wizard to be assigned to clients who will connect over the Internet. I would think that anyone who comes through the Internet will already have an IP address assigned to them and will not need another one from the VPN server. The author also misrepresents some concepts. For example, while describing service packs and their installation he defines slip streaming as "installing only a specific portion of a service pack instead of the entire update." Here is Microsoft's definition: " Windows 2000 supports service pack slipstreaming, which means that the service pack is added directly to the operating system's distribution share during installation." And "Service pack slipstreaming refers to a service pack being integrated with an updated version of Windows 2000 on a CD-ROM or on a network share."In fact the author does not even know how to apply slipstreaming since while describing switches for update.exe he never mentions the most important switch you should know - the /slip switch. The author says you have to reinstall a service pack after you add new components.Wrong. He has never installed one. Only a novice would write this since every time you install a new Windows service or component, Windows asks you for the service pack CD first and only then for the original server CD. Here is what Microsoft says: "Once the service pack has been applied, if the system state changes (for example, adding RAS after the service pack is applied), Windows 2000 installs the correct files, whether those files originate from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM or from the service pack. The eliminates the need to re-apply the service pack whenever the system state changes."I compared this bookto a similar study guide for Windows 2000 server published my Microsoft and see that while they have something in common, the author does not describe many or the concepts mentioned in the Microsoft's book. That makes me wonder if he can teach me all I need for this test or I have to read something else in addition. The bottom line. If you want to know the term, such as MPPE, CHAP, SAP, and others, then this is the book for you since the author will shoot them at you like from a machine gun. As far as practical knowledge is concerned, my opinion is that you had better look elsewhere. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good subject material, but poor test prep
I have to say, right off the bat, that there is a clear difference between studying for the test and learning the topics covered are two completely separate animals. In that regard, this book did a great job of teaching you the topics.A lot of it was explained in a simple clear concise manner, and the authors did a decent job to make the main concepts easy to understand. If you don't have experience with Windows DHCP, DNS, RRAS, etc.then this is is a great book to get started.

The real weak point of this book was the first chapter.I think the explanation of subnetting was far too confusing.I've been through several exams that cover subnetting, and I've seen it explained far better in other material. The concept of subnetting and network addressing is not complicated, but the first chapter's explanation turned it into a jumbled mess.Buy a good networking book if you don't understand these concepts, it will go much further for you.

As far as the test prep side, the book was a little weak.It was missing a lot of little details you weretested on, as it didn't scour through each and every single checkbox and option with the associated services. On the exam, it felt like the nuances were tested more than the core concepts... The book was also missing a bit of material on IIS and group policy that you may need to know for the exam.

I used this book in conjunction with CBT nuggets, which was very helpful.

ABOUT THE TEST:
I passed this test, but I think a lot of people will get the feeling that this test is just unfair. While a lot of the questions are just straight forward, some seem to mix material with other microsoft tests (encroaching possibly into the MCSE areas as well).Such items covered by the objectives that may be unexpected include (but are not limited) WSUS, GPOs, IIS, PKI, Active Directory replication, Active Directory User management, auditing/logging options and locations, etc.Do some extra reading into these materials to get a full understanding of them.Read into 70-293 and 70-294 material if you have it, specifically relating to the above areas.

I personally was expecting straight up networking questions, and the mix into other areas really caught me off guard. The material isn't explicitly covered in many resources (including those from Microsoft).

As far as the core materials go, you need to know them very well.Things like DNS and DHCP aren't very complicated concepts, so Microsoft tests you deeply on their implementation.Scour each option and make sure you know where and when to apply it.DNS and DHCP are major topics here, so be prepared.

Routing and Remote Access (RRAS) is hard for most people, since anyone in their right mind uses dedicated networking hardware for most of these purposes.People tend to not have much experience with this. The test will show you no mercy if you don't know RRAS down cold, Microsoft expects you to know it (even if no one will ever use it in a production environment).

The one thing you have going for you during the test is that the distractors (alternate choices) are borderline silly. You can almost always easily rule out two choices, some time three, simply because they make no sense whatsoever.Really, some times the answers (except one) do not even relate to the question.

I would make sure you take a good quality practice test, and make sure you have the topic down cold before you take the exam. Also, don't forget to practice hands on, its the best way to remember things and learn all the caveats.

Good luck!

3-0 out of 5 stars too wordy
A ton of info, but the writing is hard to read.. They use six paragraphs to describe things that can be explained in two.. It's as if the author is trying to impress the reader with what they know rather than just discussing the material that needs to be learned..

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time on this book
I have not written the exam yet. Before deciding on which books to use, I read the reviews, and then checked them for validity.

I have:-
-Sybex 70-291 (was given it)
-MS Press 70-291
-Sybex Mastering Windows Server 2003 (Mark Minasi)
-Exam Cram 2 (so as not to get caught out by silly MS tricks!)

This Sybex 70-291 is horribly lacking. 40 pages on RRAS and 40 pages on DNS.
Are they for real????

You need to spend a load of time on studies for this exam... working your way through every aspect and click of this server before thinking of paying your exam fee cash. Understanding what you're doing is key to not looking like a plumb when the boss says, "Hey, set us up a secure VPN quick, Jack!"

There's no reason to fail it at all, so don't buy crap books like this one to assist in the failure stats. You have made it this far, so you have the ability to get this down, don't punish yourself by wasting time on something that is filled with verbose gibberish and repetition to fill up white space just so James Chellis and his merry bandits can sell a book. Cover to cover, it's 500 pages of waffle, but regurgitated and put through the machine backwards.

...whilst Mark Minasi's book is 1750 odd pages of "Forget what you've been told by Granny Sybex's late great grandpa, This is how it really works!"

Your choice though...

2-0 out of 5 stars Inadequate at best
I have about two years of hands-on experience managing a Windows Server 2003 domain in a small-business environment. Recently I decided to pursue MCSA Win2k3 certification in order to learn more about the technology and better fulfill my job responsibilities. I bought a 3-pack of Sybex books for exams 70-270, 70-290, and 70-291 (this one).

The book for 70-270 was awesome; I read it cover to cover in 6 days and took the exam on the 7th. I passed with flying colors (score 860 with only 700 needed to pass). The only objections I had with the book were its many terribly-worded sample test questions (both book and CD) that were too vague to answer. However, the content matched the actual exam very well and I had no complaints after passing.

The sample test questions for 70-290 didn't get any better, but this book was also well-written and matched the exam's content --- for the most part. While taking the exam, I noticed a few questions that I *knew* weren't covered in the book. However, I still passed the test with a score of 811 and I didn't make a big deal about the missing content.

Then came exam 70-291. I devoted a total of 16 days to studying this book because it was more technical than the last two (not more difficult, but more detailed). I earned roughly the same scores on the book's practice tests that I had on earlier books (about 87% - 91%), so I sat down at the testing center rather confident that I would pass without any difficulty. WAM. 20 questions out of my 55 were on subjects that were NEVER MENTIONED in this book (these include DNS Forwarding, Aging and Scavenging, ISA Server, and others). I failed this test with a score of about 640. Because the last two books were so great, I was absolutely shocked by this one's shortcomings and I resolved to reread the chapters on DNS and DCHP just to make sure that I hadn't forgotten about some of the details. Sure enough, the information just wasn't there. I purchased sample tests from Self Test Software and retook the exam to earn a score of 760 (not that great, but more than enough to pass).

I am willing to give Sybex the benefit of the doubt by conceding that it is possible -- or even likely -- that Microsoft changed their exam content after this book was published, or that my test questions were not necessarily representative of an average test. However, I still wouldn't recommend this book to anyone studying for exam 70-291, and I decided to purchase a Microsoft Press study guide for my last (elective) exam on Exchange Server 2003.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage.
I used this book in preparation for the upgrade exam (since I already have my Win2K cert.) I've used a lot of Sybex books, and now rely on them pretty-much for all of my studying. This one provided solid coverage in direct, straightforward style. I don't like books that beat around the bush, and so this one met my needs well in terms of updating my knowledge of Windows 2000 Server to Server 2003. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I purchased this book for under $1, the book was in great shape and it is very helpful and easy to understand. I would definitely recommend this item to others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get you started, need the blue beast still...
Ok,

So this book is GREAT to get you started. It's super easy to read from front to back.It really gives you the best scenarios to help you easily start to understand and comprehend what they are teaching. The practice tests are OK, but you will find the actual test's questions a lot harder.I definitely recommend this book, but at the same time, recommend the Microsoft "Blue Beast" book, which isn't as easy to read, but goes a bit further into the technical aspects of certain things, which will help.Plus the practice tests on the microsoft book are a lot more like what you will see on the actual exam.

I didn't use the blue book as much as I should have, used mainly this book, and the fast pass.I Passed with a 778.. not great, but it's a pass none the less.

Good luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good study guide!
I am a current MCSE NT 4.0 going for my MCSE 2003 with 10 years experience.

This book did well in covering most topics for the exam.I passed with a 905 after two weeks of studying. There were questions on the exam that I would not have known just from reading this book.Questions relating to bluetooth were not covered in this book.Overall it was a good study guide.

okay, now that thats over with, I must say, this book is awful. maybe its the way its presented in class, or something, but this book REALLY has no use to those who want to work at a home users FAQ thingy. why??? becuase 99% of the book is devoted to.. you guessed it, THE CORPORATION!!! 2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and DVD is a joke
The book is written in a good style with the ususal volume of screenshots.
But it is published in 2003 and in the mean time in the MS certification world things have changed dramatically.
Not only is SUS called WSUS today but also some fundamental changes are introduced with the release of SP1 for Windows Server 2003.
Also the exams have changed: The introduction of the simulator and the exam is more demanding.

Mainly based on this book I did the exam and failed. Not big time, but who cares.
So I ordered the 4 volume core requirements 2nd edition from Microsoft Press. There was a lot of detail I missed in this book. Still studying but feel confident the MS Press set will help me pass the exam.

Well and the DVD..... I said it all in the title. The female presentor (Certified MS instructor as well) is good looking, but it's not even enough material for a last minute recap.

Not a recommendation this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars So very dissapointed
Like most successful certification seekers, I'm on a schedule.A delay of even a week or two puts off that final test.I gladly ordered this brand new from Amazon with two-day shipping. When it arrived, it was without it's included DVD.

In all the time I've purchased products from Amazon I have never been burned, until now.

Shame on you Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, well written, and accurate
I was certified on NT, but never got my W2k certification. So, it had been a while since I sat for an MS exam. I was obviouly aware that both the exams and the OS are very different from the NT days, so when I began my studies I was really looking to use the most thorough books I could find. I'm also studying on a tight budget (who isn't these days?), so I also wanted to be sure that I could get just one book for each exam, instead of having to buy several to fill in the gaps. I spent a lof of time looking through all of the available books at a local book store before actually buying from Amazon. It didn't teke me long to realize just how much better this book is from the competition. There's just no comparison between the depth of coverage in this book vs. the others. The DVD is also really helpful as well. I found the best way was to read a chapter, try the practice questions, and then watch that chatper on DVD. I was completely confident going into the exam that I would pass based on my work experience and my preparation with this book, and I did. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst!
This is without a doubt the worst 70-291 preparation guide in the entire world! I know this sounds very absolute, but you are not getting any value from this book at all. Just don't waste your money and get something else altogether.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review material before test day.
I would recommend this book to anybody that is about to take 70-291. I would say a word of caution though about this book. It is truly intended to be a suppliment to actual training from either a interactive self-paced class like Test Out or Prep Logic. If you try to pass the 70-291 with this book alone you may run in to difficulty. Also, I would recommend exam insurance from Microsoft if your testing center allows it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just Plain Worhless
If your intention is to pass the 70-291 test, don't waste your money or time on this book. It is an embarassment to the Exam Cram 2 series. It covers perhaps 60% of the test objectives in a very mediocre fashion. (In the future, I will be reading Amazon reviews *before* I buy the book!)

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is not for the 70-291
Other reviewers seem to have chosen the wrong book to review for some reason. I find it hard to believe that they can write a competent review on any book given the fact that they can't perform a simple search and post more than a few sentences on how they dislike a book that if read for one exam is probably not going to have a great deal to do with the other. Seems rather silly to me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Covers the info if you can weed through the fluff, don't use the CD
The book covers the information but does not lay it out in a form that is clear and concise. I will give you an example. The FSMO roles that DC's host can be seized if absolutely necessary, causing you to reformat the server. However it does not go into these in any reasonable detail. It skims the surface and leaves much to the imagination on what can be seized without messing things up and what can't, like the PDC role that can be seized but does not require a reformat of the original server.

Also the software that came with this book is BAD. I would say 90% of the questions are accurite and should be believed 100% however there was a question on FSMO roles like the one above that blatenly stated that if a PDC role is seized that the server must be reformatted completely. That is completely WRONG and both the Exam cram book and the microsoft references acknowledge that as being incorrect. So don't trust the sample tests from the software that comes from this book! ... Amazon.com Review
The Networking Essentials exam is regarded as one of theeasiest in the MCSE battery, but it has its share of pitfalls andtricks. This book helps readers identify potential difficulties in theNetworking Essentials exam and prepare accordingly.

This book openswith a broad discussion of network topologies and standards. The OSIreference model is trotted out for explanation, as are all the IEEE802 standards. In the context of planning a network, the authorsdiscuss cabling (and wireless) options and network protocols. Indeference to the contents of the exam, Casad and Newland weight theirbook toward Microsoft standards. One large chapter explainspermissions, groups, security, and other administrative work onMicrosoft networks.

Throughout the book, line drawings illustratevarious concepts. Most of the illustrations are excellent, but someare just weird; for example, one illustration lists ASCII and EBCDICcharacters in tiny type, without even listing their numericequivalents. Each chapter concludes with exercises (to be performed onan actual machine or network) and quiz questions.

A companion CD-ROMcontains practice-quiz software from Productivity Point International,a training company. The software helps you prepare for the actualformat of the exam and keeps score for you as you progress through thequestions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for those starting their MCSE trek!
Those individuals who can not/or could not pass the test on the first try must not read very well. This is the only resource I used to prepare for the Networking Essentials Exam and passed with a 751.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well written, accurate but not enough to pass the exam
The book is a good place to start, the exposition is clear and simple andalso you can get many crucial concepts required to pass the exam, but isNOT enough, it doesn't have explanations applying the concepts to solvespecific real world problems. Besides the review questions at the end ofeach chapter and the questions in the TestPrep software (included in theCD) are too easy and can give a false sense of security. Remember, in thenew Adaptive Technology used in the Networking Essentials exam the score isnot based on the number of questions answered correctly, but instead it isderived from the level of difficulty of the questions answered correctly.Be sure to practice with scenario and exhibit questions (not included inthis book). Some of the questions of the real exam have the same philosophyof the case study you can find at the end of each unit of the MicrosoftNetworking Essentials book ISBN: 157231527X

4-0 out of 5 stars All the information is here
I disagree with some of the other reviews. All the information that youneed to pass the exam is in this book. The questions on the exam areworded in a way that you must have a good understanding and recall of thechapters. For example, the book gives you the specifications for Thicknet(cable thickness, length, how it's used), but the questions aren't assimple as "How thick is Thicknet cable?".So don't expect thosekinds of questions. But I didn't see one question on the exam (which Ipassed on 1st try) that wasn't based on information available in this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars An In-Between Study Book.
My friend and I used this book with a class on NT Essentials (communitycollege). I could follow most of it, with only a little trouble on the OSImodel. However my friend having no knowledge ofnetworks period, was lostthrough most of the book. I would say that you need a general knowledge ofnetworking before using this book. And you definately need to supplementthis book with another book before taking exam. For my friend he needs aBeginners Networking Book, this book, another comprehensive book on NTEssentials and a study guide or exam cram book just to have a chance onpassing this exam. Definately dont depend on this book alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Decent
YOU CANNOT PASS THE TEST ON THE BOOK ALONE.It doesn't matter what book you read, if you don't have the practical experience or at least some classroom hands-on work, you will not pass the test easily. The book was a great fill in the gaps for me. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Short but good
This Exam Notes was surprisingly good.I've had a few years on the hardware side of networking and over a decade on the operating system side so I'm relatively demanding of a network test prep manual. It presented the information very concisely and simply.I'm not going to run out and take the Network Design test just on the basis of this book, but I do have a better grasp of the basic subject matter as I approach more complex information offered in the full fledged manuals.Good prep for deeper study and would probably be an even better review. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good starting point for MCSE
I like all the Exam Cram books. But they all have the same weakness. They are crams and not comprehensive texts.

Still, I thought it was agood place to start. Most of the material is valid and a good foundationfor the other exams.

I would supplement it with other morecomprehensive books like the Microsoft Network Press book--those are theopposite and give you too much information that will bog you down and putyou to sleep.Use both and pass.

The exam crams do what they claim. Give it as much as possible in the quickest way.I recommend this book foranyone studying for this exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Networking Essentials- Adaptive Edition
Used this book, along with Testout demo as study guides. Very concise and to the point, although lacking in a few areas. This was my 5th test taken. Scored 933 yesterday. Make sure you take the other Core tests first.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the final read
Used this book as a last resource and it was worth it, very neat presentation of RAIDs and very clean illustrations. Lacking on a few items like troubleshooting tools how to read them. Read this a the last thing itwill be worth it Passed yesterday with 966.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Refresher
The book provides an excellent and, I feel, comprehensive, review of the meat needed to pass the Networking Essentials exam.It may not teach you enough about troubleshooting and logical thinking about networks, I didn'tconcentrate on that part of the book. But if you have a basicunderstanding of networking, this book will assist you in memorizing all ofthose specifications (cables, protocols, etc) you need to know inside andout for the exam. With 4 exams now down, I got my highest score yet onthis exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good study guide for Microsoft test
This is definitely a good study guide for the Microsoft implementation of TCP/IP.Don't accept it as a definitive reference on TCP/IP in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with this book!
There are a lot of TCP/IP books out there, but this is one of the most thorough and well written MCSE books I've read. (I've read a lot!). It takes you from TCP/IP fundamentals on up. STRONG NT Server knowledge adefinate pre-requisite for this book. Will make a great administrationreference after the test!

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite good
Before you read this book, I think you must have fundamental knowledge on TCP/IP, since this book does not provide basic information on TCP/IP in-depth. However, it still does a good job for helping you prepare the exam.It is a complete book, that contains many materials, enoughillustration, fast track etc. But the part of the fast track(summary of thewhole book) is not so good, the content is too superficial and also thereview questions are too easy that not match to the live exam. ... Microsoft is in the process of migrating its Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification to the Windows XP and .NET environment, which means you need to be prepared for the new material if you're coming up for renewal or want to earn your MCSE ab initio. Curt Simmons, the author of MCSE Windows XP Professional Study Guide, has applied his well-known tutorial skills--he wrote a couple of this book's predecessors--to the latest material (exam 70-270, specifically). As is typical of books in the Osborne-McGraw Hill Study Guide series, this one has headings that correspond to sections on the Microsoft outline of tested subjects. It'll be reassuring to test-preppers that the author has covered the complete set of requirements.

As for the coverage itself, it tends to go into more detail than do the actual exam questions. This is commendable, both because it makes the test go easier (unless you tend to "think too much" and interpret questions as more complicated than intended) and because it makes the book a useful reference after you've passed the test. Explanatory material combines conceptual prose with a lot of illustrations and quite a few procedures. Almost every page has at least one graphic, though they're almost exclusively screen shots. Conceptual diagrams would help clarify subjects like Active Directory. --David Wall

Topics covered: Everything Microsoft says you need to know in order to pass its Windows XP Professional exam (70-270) on your way to an MCSE or another company certification. This includes installation, hardware management, disk and file administration, networking (including remote networking and routing), and troubleshooting. There's also a CD-ROM containing exam-simulation software and some instructional video segments. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Professional Study Guide for Exam 70-270
A well written book, not over written in technical jargon to lose the novice and not boring for the more advanced reader.A CD come with the boof filled with electronic test and additional resources.Detailed and Specific a useful tool for a person reviewing for the exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Passed the Exam using it as guide, but some errors
All in all, with the information in this book plus some hands-on experience, I was able to pass 70-270 without much problem. However, there are several misprints and inaccuracies in the text that I didn't find covered in the "Errata" section on the book's website.

While I can't expect a book to be 100% error-free, there seemed to be more than just the "slipped through the editorial cracks" stuff.A non-technical editor possibly wouldn't have known that Remote Desktop runs on port 3389, instead of 3398, for example. The little "gotchas" in the book can be damaging on the exam if you don't thoroughly know the rest of the material well.

Hey, I'm not complaining.I passed the test. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Stuffs on CD-ROM, Easy to Read, but Not Deep Enuf
i am a cisco certified, and graduated and working in data communication field.
for certification exam, i mainly use sybex products and sometime cisco press, this is the first time i tried products from osbone and i foud out that not just sybex can produce good products in certification realm.

firstly, i have read this book cover to cover, but i haven't taken the exam yet, so i can't really credit this book as how well it serves its objective of preparing for Win XP (70-270) exam.

i have 2 winxp 70-270 books, one from microsoff press and MCSA Box Set from osbone. i can tell u that this book is a lot far better than microsoft press product (i am very disappointed and will never buy a book from micosoft press again...really), but not sure if compare to sybex products.

stuffs in this book:

PRO: (5 stars)
- book was well written, easy to read and very fun, the chapter's review question may seem to b too easy, but i think the purpose of it is to make sure u understand the important topics in that chapter b4 u move on and b able to apply it later. the real hard and tricky questions will b in the cd-rom and it is the questions that we should focus on (that's for exam), not the chapter review questions (that's for explaining concepts).
- the accompany cd-rom is damn cool, i love it
- especially the video scripts which show u how to perform most of the excercises in the book. it proved to b very useful for me in duing chapter's review bcoz i don't need to reread every steps in each excercise again, just sit and watch again and again which save a lot of time and also easier to remeber.
- the test engine is also very nice, very varity, u can du open and close book quiz, or exam sim, this is 100 times better than kid stuffs from microsoft press. but still, i am not sure if the content of the test engine really close to the real exam bcoz i haven't sit for the exam yet.
- the win xp sim is also nice, i think it won't really match exactly to simulation questions in the real exam, but at least i learn that the way to config or du some setting in the sim is not the same as duing it in the real OS, there are different roles, and the roles of duing it are provided here, and i am sure i won't du some stupid mistakes in the real exam such as "why can't i click this twice".

CON:(-1 star)
- after reading this book cover to cover, yes most of concepts are well presented, but still it is not deep enuf (at least for me as a network admin), and still leaves a lot of questions bhide, this may lead to not serving its objective well as exam preparation (just may)

as i mentioned ealier, i haven't sit for the exam yet, so i can't tell u guys if this book serve its objective of win xp 70-270 exam well means how good it will help u pass the exam.

i reviewed it as one of reader who finished reading it cover to cover and i like the book especialy the cd-rom.

i will come to give another review after i have a chance to sit for the exam.

thanks to other reviewers, especially the one who passed and recommend reading exam readinese from microsoft press b4 taking the exam, i shall du that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Makes a great door stop!
This is a very broad overview of the operating system, the test questions are ridiculously easy - how they managed to fill 700+ pages is beyond me!Find a REAL study guide before taking the test!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Does not meet criteria..
I bought this book to study for exam 70-270.I can not remember if there were reviews of other titles available, or if I bought this book on good faith, regardless. This book is one gleaming, steaming, dungpile of wasted time and money bound in a Hardback for you pleasure. The technical content presented, combined with the quiz method provided in the self tests will assure you waste hard earned money.I read this book cover to cover, and just happened to read a review before taking 70-270.Heaven looked down on me. You have a sense when performing the end of chapter self-test question that "This seems too easy. Or, the wrong answers are too easy to isolate."Dont waste your time or money.Oh, and btw, if you see one of these books in your local book store, and you happen to need to relieve yourself...Put it to good use and bring it in the bathroom with you..No silly, dont read it.. Wipe your arse with it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Easy? Confused?
OK! I know there are a lot of mistakes...especially for the beginner like me...I am really confused by this book because of its unnecessary mistakes...but, I really like the chapter 2...it's very easy to understandthe ARP...IP or ICMP..However,I got confused on the chapter 5 with thewrong route table...Man,I hope it would be better when it come to thesecond edition!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it.
Overall, it is easy book to read but you could really tell that each chapter was written by a different person. Some chapters are good but others are really poor. The end of the chapter tests were way too easycompared to the actual test. It has an incredible number of mistakes andtypos especially in the calculation of subnet masking. I went round incircles and wasted so much time trying to figure out why I could never geta question correct. I think this book has a second edition that I hope isbetter. Avoid this book and you will be a much happier person.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average content but too many errors.
I used the book with help from the CBT Systems computer based training and found the book quite useful for the holes that the CBT did not cover. But the book contained too many errors for a training book.I was alwayslooking at the error correction list from the web site to make sure what Iwas reading was correct. That should not happen on this kind of book. Clean up the errors and it would be a lot better at its job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Text and exercises are well organized, easy to understand.
Of the three study guides I used in preparation for my MCSE exam, I found Dulaney's guide to be the most thorough. Each chapter sets realistic goals and contains written text that is are easy to interpret. The exercises atthe beginning and end of each chapter are both challenging and meaningfulto taking the exam. The book gives constructive and useful informationabove and beyond what's needed for the exam; information that I'm able touse in my day-to-day challenges as a Network Engineer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors within too much text.
I have not been a big fan of the New Riders series for the MCSE exam, butthis book is by far the worst of them all. For TCP/IP exam, the MS coursematerial should be enough to pass the exam. ... Read more

Product Description
Designed to help you prepare for Exam 70-058, Networking Essentials.Provides full coverage of every exam objective, practical information on applying networking concepts, and cutting edge exam prep software, including product simulations and electronic flashcards.CD-ROM included.Amazon.com Review
Networks, local and wide, are nothing new. What is new is theidea that the network can be many times greater than the sum of itsparts, and that organizations without networked machines are at asevere competitive disadvantage. Networks need administrators, andgood administrators need credentials. That's what the NetworkingEssentials piece of the MCSE puzzle is for.

The authors begin byexplaining what computer networks are and why they're useful--anexercise in the obvious, most likely for most of their readers. Theythen cover the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) network model andhop into real-work network implementations, including Ethernet, TokenRing, FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface), ATM (AsynchronousTransfer Mode), AppleTalk, and ARCnet.

After covering theorysolidly, the book rolls on through network architecture, includingissues of physical cabling distances, network protocols, and serverconfiguration (focusing, appropriately, on Windows NT and itsapplications). Day-to-day administration gets attention (thoughsecurity, which admittedly is covered in other MCSE pieces, gets shortshrift here). The authors explain WANs (wide area network) and remoteaccess (including RAS [Remote Access Service]) to the reader inexcellent detail.

Each chapter of this book includes scenario-basedproblems (actual exercises in setting up networks aren't practical)and quiz questions that mimic those on the exam. The CD-ROM includespractice exams, too. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not A Beginner's Guide
The major benefit of this book is that it is an easy read. It will not put you to sleep like most books on this topic. This text should be used as a reference for people that are already familiar with networking principles. It is very basic and will assume that you already understand certain principles. As a beginner I had a hard time with this book. After taking a networking class and actually doing some hands-on networking, I have no problem reading this book and understanding it. One other drawback is that it does have several errors. Overall: There are better books out there on the topic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!
If you want to pass the Networking Essentials exam then this is the bookto get!!! Easily worded allowing the reader to have a clear and preciseunderstanding of network topologies, cabling and protocols and otherimportant areas as well. Added with the Networking Essentials exam notesand you are bound to pass the exam.

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic Information
I was very disappointed with this book. The information covered in the book was not helpful in preparing for the Networking Essentials exam. The book covered basic terminology, concepts that can be found in other bookswith less errors.I would not recommend this book in preparing for theNetworking Essentials exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the mcp student's must have book.
hi students and friends who are preparing for mcp examinations, this is one of the three best materials i have used to pass this 70-058 mcp examination . this book has been written in plain english which can beunderstandable by all students and technicians and it also covers all theinformations needed to pass the examination . the two practice examsincluded in CD-ROM is very good but you should also practice withTranscender examination software which will give you an real life onlinefeelings of examination.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors
One thing which really annoys me about this book is the number of errors. This book has em all, incorrectly labeled diagrams, inconsistencies in units of measurements-half the time the author uses feet and the restmeters makes it a very frustrating experience trying to docomparisons.

For some reason, this module of the MCSE suffers from a lackof good books, there doesn't seem to be anything better out there! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Exam and Study Info but OUTDATED !
This book is worth $10 or less and is too outdated...it was written in late 1997!The book concentrates on the NT 4.0 part of the MCSE course, and those exams are slated for retirement this year. The book is filledwith fluff - It gives many locations for info found at Microsofts website.MS gives you this info for free if you just do some minor clicking aroundand reading on your own. Anyone who is considering MCSE should be veryfamiliar with MS's website and this info already! If your not, you probablyshouldn't be trying to get certified! You need more experience! This bookdoes offer good info for developing study methods and habits. It offers oneor two good strategies for taking the exam and does give some fair adviceabout the exam process from start to finish. That is it as far as valuableinfo goes! The majority of this book is spent telling you about the MCSEexam track, the free info at Microsoft.com, and other minro stuff. If thisbook was updated AND the price was lowered OR the writers drop the fluffand put in more heavy, detailed facts this would be a worthy purchase. Ireturned this book 7 days after I got it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Motivator!
Found this book to be just the shot in the arm I needed! Gaining an MCSE is a daunting task and this book has helped a lot in learning how to "eat the (MCSE) elephant, one bite at a time"

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful...
You've packed a lot of information in a small space. I found it very useful and the price quite reasonable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thanks for bringing it all together
I needed this book! Although it's a little slim on actual study tips (hence the 4 stars) you should still buy it because it brings it all together in a manageable form.Very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Neal
As an MCT, I'm recommending this book, as I'm recommending Mr. Neals' other books, to my MCSE classes.I have just received my copy and I'm already reading and noting information to pass along tostudents....specifically, buy this book! Students today need a goodrefresher in studying. The skills touched on in this book are oftenoverlooked in secondary education. The subjects can be so boring that it'shard to hold students' attention. As I discovered in his Windows 98 book,Patrick Neal can explain something so matter-of-factly, that it's almostenjoyable to read. Although I wish there was a little more depth andadditional topics, including some broader reviews of basic study habits,Mr. Neal has delivered a good first effort. ... Read more
