5-0 out of 5 stars It's just it!
Actually I am not really fond of the microsoft study guides, to prepare for any exam, but this one just proves me wrong! Just like you can expect on the exam, they describe a case and drill down the do's, don'ts, why and the why not's or the best solution for the specific case.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good study aid for the 70-220 exam
If you have tried Microsoft Readiness Reviews in the past you probably didn't buy more than one.The difference between the level of difficulty of the practice questions and the actual test questions made previous Readiness Reviews a poor choice. While the level of difficulty is still not equal to the actual test, the questions in the 70-220 Readiness Review are challenging and the case studies give insight into what you will see on the 70-220 test.

The book is organized to follow the official Microsoft exam objectives. Each section contains a very short summary of the objective. My only criticism is that in many cases the summary was too brief, or simply did not contain useful summary information. On the plus side, the explanations for the answers (both the correct and incorrect choices) to the practice questions also gave useful insight into the actual exam.

I used the Microsoft 70-220 Training Kit(see my review) to learn the material and the Readiness Review to study for, and pass the test.I did not use any of the Readiness Reviews for the core exams, but I will certainly consider them for future tests. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars So close and with some work it goes over the top.
Network+ has a new exam and as such new material needs to be studied in order to pass the objectives and the exam. This 2 set reference manuals could be a great tool for that purpose.

Book 1 is a Test Yourself book with 250 plus questions going objective by objective and also at the end of the book is a practice exam. What this book needs is a cd with more practice questions to be a truly effective tool.

In Book 2, the Study Guide, you have a manual that covers every objective and gives you over 50 exercises. Along with that are tips, tricks and diagrams plus questions at the end of each chapter.

The cd included has audio study so you can learn while driving, an e-book making this whole thing portable, CertTrainer for the e-training and ExamSim for the practice test mode. Overall a nice package which can be used in the classroom as well as self learning.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money
The study guide is somewhat useful (but still contains inaccurate information not addressed in the errata that used to be found on the publisher's web site), but the book of sample test questions was a complete waste of money - see my review under the practice test book.

My attempts to contact the publisher to get an up to date listing of errata was not at all satisfying.

If you want books that more accurately represent the material that is actually on the CompTIA Network+ exam, I recommend the Network+ Exam Cram and Exam Prep books, and the Network+ Certification for Dummies book (in that order).

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is a very good book for the Network + Exam.It was the only study guide I used and I passed the test the first time. The test questions helped very much.It modeled the actual exam 100%.It is the only bookyou will need if you want to become Network + certified.I reccomend thisbook. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars CISSP prep
This book does a good job at summarizing and explaining ideas and concepts without going into too much detail or "fluff" as most of the later versions do.If you have a very good understanding on computer technologies and had no problems with A+ and Security+ and you have a short amount of time to study...then this book is for you. If you have more time on your hands, then the most recent print of the book (approx 1100+ pages) is better to review especially if you are going to teach it to others in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy Read and very useful!
This is a very easy book to follow and has a good approach to reviewing the material necessary for the CISSP exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book.
This is a tone down version of the All in One by Shon Harris. It's the bulk/meat of the bigger version. If you've read the AIO you probably didn't retain majority of the information in that book. But this book makes it fairly easy to retain all those information. For the CISSP exam I sugguest read the AIO and then read this book to get the high level material that will most likely be covered in the exam.I used this Passport book mainly for the exam and used the AIO plus other materials to reenforce the topics.I came back here to check, and found the price WAAYYY over priced!!Why is it $300+ when it was printed for $29.99??Even if it is out of print!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mike Meyers CISSP
The book is as great as I was told it was, it is an easy read and very informative. It should help me a lot as I pursue a CISSP certification. I bought it used but it looked new, the personsold it from will get my business anytime, I'm very happy with the whole deal!

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disapointment (and a ripoff)
First, the disappointment:
I must say, it is obvious to me that the writer is not only non-technical, but on occasion has trouble with composing coherent sentences. The book very much left me the impression that it was written in a major hurry, and that the writer just Googled each topic, and then slapped something together based on a quick read.Based on the apparent lack of technical knowledge and how concepts relating to software development, protocol stacks, networking, etc. were badly mangled in the book, I am really left wondering if I'll be able to pass the CISSP exam.

Now to the ripoff:
"Free online practice exam" is plastered all over this book (front, back, inside cover, entire section in the book, etc. But when you actually go the the specified web address to claim your free practice exam, they tell you it is no longer available for free, and now you have to pay $20 to get it!!! Haven't these people heard of a class action suit? This is outrageous.

So would I buy this book again? No sireee. And I'll stay away from McGraw-Hill/Osborne as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Must have for review
If you want to take the exam this is the book to study from.
Shorter than I expectd but has a CD included.
Samples show you the areas you are weak in.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good - Forget the software
The book itself is well thought out with the various parts (answers and explanation are provided which is nice). Much of the notes refer you to the "big book" Wireshark Network Analysis: The Official Wireshark Certified Network Analyst Study Guide for further reading.

In contrast to the book, which is good, the software is not up to anyone's standards for really studying. It is a flash application which can be run on any platform (Linux you need wine - it is an .exe - thanks Adobe). If you have gotten any test prep software from any other vendor you will notice the features that this is lacking. It is just a 100 question test - no preview mode or hints provided - no ability to concentrate on a particular area or areas to study - just the test of 100 questions.

Seeing that this is the first edition I am hoping that the software will improve when they get it redone (hopefully someone that is out of High School will take up the challenge).

For the most part the book is a 4 star effort and the software is about a -1 ... Read more

Product Description
A coursebook designed to teach the reader everything needed to select and implement the Cisco software needed to build scalable, routed networks. Focuses on routers for medium to large networks such as LANs and WANs. This text can serve as a training tool to help network professionals understand technologies and prepare for Cisco exams.Amazon.com Review
Designed to help a student prepare for the Routing exam (640-503) en route to Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification, Building Scalable Cisco Networks explains the three main routing protocols and provides exercises that will give readers practical experience on Cisco Systems equipment. This is an excellent, generally comprehensive guide to routed data networks that's as well suited to on-the-job reference as to test preparation. Authors Catherine Paquet and Diane Teare assume readers have somewhat less than CCNA-level knowledge of Cisco routing (probably a considerately conservative assumption), and explain Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) in terms tailored to people who configure Cisco routers for a living.

Routing, like object-oriented programming, is one of the topics everyone must think about and conceptualize individually. Paquet and Teare use conceptual drawings, feature-comparison tables, and Internetwork Operating System (IOS) input-and-output listings--as well as lucid writing--to explain complex protocols as simply as possible. They also make use of a case study in which a company must integrate several acquired companies, each with different internetworking and routing schemes, into an efficient whole. More obviously test-preppish material includes configuration exercises (assigned and then separately explained) and review questions at each chapter's conclusion. --David Wall

Topics covered:

  • Scalable routing protocols, as implemented on Cisco Systems routers
  • Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) in single and multiple areas
  • Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP)
  • Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
  • Techniques for optimizing routing-table updates

2-0 out of 5 stars Bound to leave you confused!
I would save yourself some time by looking for other books. I was also daunted by this book's size and determined to master the material solely based on earlier reviews. So I read this book several times and have the following comments:

The organization of OSPF material has the following drawbacks: a) lack of context, the commands are covered only after some theory is given in a dry definition form. This is great, you may say, but to me it was not easy to put the definitions into context. The material for OSPF is mostly from the Cisco OSPF Design Guide (read those skimpy pages to get the most understanding of OSPF). So it looks like from the OSPF design guide, they seperated the theory and interspersed it with some other text and moved the configuration towards the chapter end. The second OSPF chapter requires serious apology to the readers: inter area routing and external routing are impossible to describe and make students understand without introducing redistribution(this is introduced only at the end). However, this makes the material extremely difficult to understand.

EIGRP is OK.

BGP is another complex set of definitions, and several reads are needed before even trying to piece together the definition and understand how to put everything together.

So: for OSPF start from OSPF design guide by Cisco. Not sure about where to go for EIGRP and BGP: I got a hang of those material by several reads of the Paquet and Teare material.

1-0 out of 5 stars Building Scalable Cisco Networks
Please note that this book is for a retired exam. The new exam replacing this one is Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (BSCI) 640-901
Don't waste your money!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for the material it presents.
There are, I believe, at least two benchmarks against which one could rate this book. They are:
1) Does the book provide good coverage of the topics presented in the book, and
2) Does the book provide good coverage for all the topics you'll be tested for in BSCI (640-901).

I also believe that it would be a mistake to judge this book against a benchmark it wasn't designed for, hence, I'll confine my comments and rating from perspective 1.

The authors have done a good job with the topics presented in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering studying for the CCNP/CCIP certification and doesn't know where to begin. That said, I would suggest you look below at the list of books and testing software I found useful and necessary to prepare for the BSCI test.

Base guide: This book
Supplement for IS-IS: Lammel's BSCI book
MUST REFERENCES: Jeff Doyle's Vol 1 and 2
Testing software: Companion CD with Lammel's book, and Boson BSCI exam #2.

A few words about the test itself and how I fared. The test was tougher than I had anticipated. I say tough because, I felt that the questions and the choices were loosely worded to leave me with some doubt of my choices. So far, I've always completed the tests in somewhere between half and two-thirds the time-limit, however, it took me almost the allotted duration to complete this exam. To be candid, I felt I got lucky to have scored 907.

Note: Perhaps this review might be put in a better perspective if I said, that I've been away from hands-on experience with networks for the last five months. Prior to the break, I had worked in the internetworking industry for about five years(effectively) out of six.

I wish the best of luck to other pursuers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good enough to pass...
This book is good enough to pass the test. However, it does not go deep enough into covering IP routing protocols. If you want to take it a step (or two) further, check out "Cisco IOS for IP Routing" by Andrew Colton. That book should give you a lot more information on dynamic IP routing (RIP, EIGRP, OSPF, IS-IS, and BGP).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!
Very good for the exam; you have to read this if you want to pass Cisco's Routing Exam. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated Text
This book covers the old Foundations exam, retired in 2005. The new exam has many topics not covered by this book, including XML, XHTML, IT job roles, and project management concepts. The test engine is similarly outdated. If you plan on getting certified, look for newer books based on the CIW v5 Foundations Exam 1D0-510.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helped me pass the exam
Just passed my exam today with a 93%.I used this book as my primary study material and supplimented it with other practice exams I found on the internet.

I probably did more studying than most, but I read the book cover to cover and did all the practice exams.I found they went into more detail than was necessary for the network portion of the exam. However, don't let that mislead you, because you are tested on a LOT of networking and TCP/IP concepts. It's just that they went into more detail than necessary, (however, it's nice to know, especially if you're not as familiar with networking as with the web aspects of the test). But again, if you don't know the networking aspect, you will *not* pass this test.

I think that this book could (and should) have covered more on encryption and line speeds.I had to go outside the book because they didn't go in to enough detail there.

I will also second the motion that there are errors in the book; however if you read the chapters carefully, you'll pick up the errors fairly easily.

In all, I'd recommend this book.I would not have passed the test without it.Good luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for passing CIW-F.
This book did the job, and I passed the first time with a 92%. After reading the book, I went back and focused on the chapter highlights and the chapter exams.Whenever I found myself guessing, I went back and re-read the section in question.By the time I got to the real exam, the exam questions seemed obvious.

Also, I didn't encounter much on the exam that wasn't in the book, with one exception-It may be helpful to know binary math to understand the IP Addressing section more easily, and the book doesn't cover this much.

I didn't find NUMEROUS mistakes as others have, but I did see one or two-usually editorial mistakes, though, and easy to spot.

This book was not my only source, though. For information on the TCP/IP stack and the OSI/RM (knowing these subjects in DETAIL is absolutely VITAL!) I used a CD-ROM from learntcpip.com.It only cost about ... but it helped alot.

Overall, I will recommend this book to anyone planning to take the Foundations exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Does the job depite shortcomings
If you are already comfortable with the material presented and are able to weed out the many mistakes and typos in the book, then you will certainly be able to pass the exam.I have never seen a book with so many mistakes in it. It makes me leary of buying any other books from Hungry Minds.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Lot Of Errors
Good book that covers all aspects. However, be cautious because there A LOT of errors in this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Review
I found this book to be well written, concise and to the point. The chapters are broken down in to easy to digest parts, which prepare you for end chapter tests which really tests what you've learned!I would recommend this book for anyone who is serious about passing the CCNA test, and if your really looking for a great resource, this book is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA FAST PASS
A must for a CCNA candidate. Great read 30 days prior to the examination.
Remember, this book will only help you to refresh your thoughts about the various topics covered in the CCNA exam. For one to pass the exam, extended reading is required/

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT WORTH IT
this book is an shortened offshoot of Todd's other book. It doesn't make you learn quicker either. Stay with the full version. And yes, alot of typos and errors................

2-0 out of 5 stars Not well edited
There is a lot of good information in this book, but the figures have missing data and the programming examples have missing commands. It looks like this book was thrown together from other texts and then not checked for consistency. In all, you probably won't pass the CCNA by using this book as a study guide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Passport Network Plus
I ordered this book for my husband.Item was as described and shipping was super fast! Thanks:)

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok for a supplemental source
So I just took the test yesterday and passed with an 818 out of a possible 900, 720 was passing. I will say this, this book helped alot with the exam however it did not completely cover all topics. There were protocols I had not even heard of on the test and this book did not mention them. If you are looking for a supplemental book to help prepare you for the test, than this is an OK choice but you will DEFINITELY not be able to rely on passing the test with just this book. I used a video study program with over 50 hours of video as my primary source of material.

4-0 out of 5 stars Passed via this book. Needs editing for accuracy.
I was able to use this book as a type of 'boot camp' for me. This book is easy to carry and sticks to what may be on the test so I do like that.Give yourself a month and you can read through it easily, if you want to read 6 hours a day (not fun) you can do that too in a week but dont do that on purpose and only if you already are familiar with the topics. This book has multiple inconstanties and incorrect answers on review questions and gives some conflicting information in different chapters on the same thing. Its a small amount of wrong data and would be found on a simple read through by an editor.Anyway, passing the test right, that's all we really care about. I saw those other thick books my coworkers were reading and since I do have experience in the industry I didn't want to start from scratch so.. if you have never picked up a computer book before then start with something else but if you have worked in a helpdesk or tech support you will already have the skillset to start with. This is an acronym and protocol heavy test and the book covers 80 -85% of what you may see on the test.In the end I passed and studied nothing else but this book but just barely made it... give yourself more study time.that is the answer. If you are serious about passing this test, give your self study time and a month.. This does have the information you will need.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the Network+ exam
It took me about a week to study with this book which was very easy to read. I then scheduled my CompTIA Network+ 2009 exam the following week, and passed. I believe this book covered about 80-90 percent of the exam. If you are looking for a good book to study with for the CompTIA Network+, then this is something you might want to consider getting. Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed the Security+
Studied with this book, used the two included tests and the one that I was given as a free download.Missed only one question on the Security+ test. What more can I say?The book did what I needed it to do, covered the parts of the topic where I was a bit hazy.Of course, I am not saying that you can pass with no experience, but if you have a weak spot, this will fortify you in that area.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
Very good Book.I read this and took some practice tests and passed the Security+ test without a problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent CompTIA book for only SOME of your studies
I took the Security+ test and made a 100% on it. It didn't take more than 30 min. This book, using it as a side to the standard CompTIA book (about 3 times as big) is more of a clarification to the bigger book rather than a complete course on it. I promise you that you will not pass the test if you read exclusively this. However, I also believe if you don't utilize this book then it will hurt your score. If you are not a computer savvy person and you want some explanation to some of the terms you don't understand, check this book out. It uses a lot of review questions, however some of the questions are not good examples. However, the book is organized into the sections the test is, so it makes it easier to keep you in order. I personally read this, the big CompTIA book, and a few other various materials and I made a 100%. You can too, if you give an effort to study!

3-0 out of 5 stars Usable ... barely
I was given this book to teach from in a bootcamp style course. It covers all objectives - objectively. However, the depth of information is lacking on many many topics. This is not just a critique of this book - I havn't yet found a tome that covers all areas of Security+ curriculum - each book I've seen appears to be lacking something. It's a good start, but I don't know if it's enough for someone with no prior knowledge to pass the exam. The insets and "exam guides" are useful, just wish it had a little more meat.If it were half again longer (with good material), I'd have no problem paying a little more for this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars PABLUM - PURE PABLUM - NOT USEFUL
I just took the "course exam" and finished it in about 10 minutes - with 100% score.

I am a trainer, certified in S+ 2008, and was searching for complementary material for my classes - this book, and the accompanying "practice test" are PURE PABLUM!!I found almost NOTHING that would be of any use on the live exam.

Rule-out Mike Meyers AND LearnKey!!!

Michael Kang, CCNP, CCDP, CWSP, is a senior wireless network consultant with the Advanced Services Worldwide Wireless Practice group at Cisco Systems, Inc.

"There are a number of books available for Cisco's 640-721 exam, but by far Henry Chou and Michael Kang's CCNA Cisco Certified Network Associate Wireless Study Guide is in a league of its own. It divides the material into twelve chapters (five parts) and thoroughly covers the information. At the end of each chapter, you have a "Two-Minute Drill" and a test (followed by the answers to such). The minimum number of these end-of-the-chapter questions is ten, with one chapter holding 11 and another 18. There are practice exams on the accompanying CD (making the total set 250), and two appendices on hardware-related subject matter. This makes for one powerful book and the ideal prescription for passing a popular CCNA exam." CertCities, July 1, 2010

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to prepare for wireless exam
To start off let's consider the practical side to this book.In the last 30 days we have had 3 engineers pass their CCNA wireless certification using this book as their primary resource. All passed on their first attempt.Guess that pretty much shows that this book can get the job done.

This book is geared to the CCNA which is entry level and covers a wide range of topics but not in great depth. The depth of coverage is well suited to the level you need to attain for the exam. I found the book easy to read, well organized, clear, concise and accurate.

The book starts with basics of RF and wireless LAN topologies and technologies. The book covers 802.11 b/g/a/n standards, their modulation types, and the encoding methods. It spends a good amount of time on security, encryption, and authentication which is very useful. You will learn about the Cisco Unified Wireless Network Architecture and how the AP and controller perform their functions to provide connectivity for clients and allow them to roam. The section on implementing a Cisco wireless LAN does not go into much detail and just covers the basics of installing and configuring the Lightweight AP, Wireless LAN Controller, and WCS.The book is not intended to make you an expert in this area.It is certainly helpful if you can get some hands on time with the equipment to get more familiar with the menus and tabs so you will know what you find in each area. The book gives you the starting point but you will need to get some experience. Finally, the last section will take you through administrative and troubleshooting tasks. You will become familiar with some "Show" and "Debug" commands from the controller CLI.Again, it is very helpful to get some hands on time to really get comfortable with these topics.

At the end of each chapter are four sections that are very useful;
1. Inside the exam.Gives areas you need to review and focus on for the test.
2. Certification Summary.Summarizes key topics and concepts in the chapter.
3. Two minute Drill.Bullet points covering each main topic for review prior to the exam.
4. Self Test.A quick check to verify your comprehension and give additional review of the topics.

What the book does not cover is basic switching and routing.Since the exam requires that you have a current CCNA certification there is no need to cover this material.

The book comes with a CD with practice exams.I will have to admit that I only ran the exam engine once to see how it worked.Seemed to function fine, was somewhat like the Cisco exam, and is a good method to check your knowledge of the material. The CD also has a .pdf with the contents of the book. This can be handy if you don't want to carry the book all the time.

Overall I give this book high marks and found it to be an excellent resource. ... Read more
