This course is designed to provide network technicians and support staff with the foundation-level skills they need to install, operate, manage, maintain, and troubleshoot a corporate network. This course will help prepare students for the CompTIA Network+ 2009 certification exam. It should be noted that a course alone cannot prepare students for any CompTIA exam. It is important that students have the recommended work experience in IT networking prior to taking the exam. For the CompTIA Network+ 2009 certification, CompTIA recommends students have 9 to 12 months of experience in the IT support industry. ... Read more

Although this book has the information to help you pass, do not rely on it alone. IMO, this book isn't organized. As part of our job requirement, a third-party training company issued this book with the class. Those that took the test just by reading this book alone barely passed or failed. Personally, I had to purchase another book CompTIA Network+ Certification Study Guide, Fourth Edition (Certification Press) which was better organized and had some tips and techniques for learning the standards. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Ho-hum..
Very terse book, hard to read for any length of time, very dry. This book was one of several I purchased in prep for the Security+ exam - and I found it to be my least favorite.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
This was a waste of paper. Some topics in security + test were not covered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Private IP Addressing Prefix Numbers
Overall a good book, I gave it 4 stars becaise I'm not clear on one issue on page 298, Chapter 6, Network Security.

Here is outlined the range of addresses set aside as defined in RFC 1918 as private IP addresses:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix)
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix)
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix)

Wouldn't the range from 172.16 - 31 be a /16 prefix and 192.168 be a /24 prefix? Looks like there's some supernetting going on here. Please, someone who reads this review and is knowlegeable in networking explain this for me as to where they came up with these prefixes.

Thank you,

Chris

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked out fine for me
The book was thorough and well written, the tests worked far better than another vendor I was using at the same time and as I passed the Security + with over 90% I consider it a great source.

No single book should be all you use but this one was the best of the bunch.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
This book has many errors in the "Self Test" sections. Chapter 14's Self Test has at least 3 errors. The answer section has incorrect answers for at least two of the Self Test problems and problem 15 has choices A, C, C, or D (correct answer is B according to the answer section). After quickly reviewing other Self Test sections and finding what appears to be ambiguous choices for some problems, it is clear that this book lacks the correctness needed to study for the Security+ exam. I fear the information in this book may be incorrect and I'm forced to stop using it, which means I will be purchasing another book and the money I spent on this one was wasted. Also, I hunted for the errata and couldn't find it so I emailed Syngress but they never responded. Do yourself a favor... don't buy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Certification Prep
I am a software developer and admin with a BS in Computer Security. I have been using Ubuntu for 2 years and have been pleased overall with it. I thought after graduation that it would be valuable to have some extra padding on my resume and considered getting this and other certifications. While studying I took notes on what I read and tried to complete the labs. Some did not work out since I did not want to wipe out my PC and saw no reason to become familiar with the fdisk command. To study I re read my notes and took practice exams. When I earned a B on the book's exam I took the real test and passed. It turns out that I should have paid more attention to fdisk and formatting. It may have also helped to have reviewed how pcmcia cards are recognized by Linux and maybe taken additional practice exams. Overall though the book makes a nice desk reference despite its size and did prepare me for the exam. I recommend that if you have 2+ years of Linux experience and some server administration experience then get the book read it cover to cover taking notes along the way and then study until you can not stand it anymore. You will most likely pass but will need to treat it like a traditional course and be stay committed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!!!!!!!
Loved the book. I used this to form the basis to get my Linux+ certification. The biggest factor that I enjoyed out of reading this is its ability to appease to any level of user reading it. I knew absolutely nothing about Linux and was able to understand every aspect that was covered. It does suggest you know a little about A+ and Net+ prior to reading it (which I had), but I believe with the way it is delivered even those that don't know that much - yet are computer literate as a user - can still comprehend what is being covered.

This by far is my favorite computer book I have ever read and will suggest it to anyone looking to get into Linux.

2-0 out of 5 stars I am not getting a good feeling about this book after reading the first chapter
I have taken this book out of my library while waiting for a new Linux+ study guide, which is not the same person who wrote this one.

I read the first chapter and I have worked with Linux and Unix for many years and are familiar with both. It was interesting some of the topics that were mentioned but at issues were the chapter questions that I noticed had some errors and asked some information that was not discussed in the chapter. For example...

1) The first question asked which of the following are applications out of five choices (pick two). I noticed there was three choices and two for operating systems. There answer is that there are two OS and the rest of applications which was not the question asked.

2) There a command talked about listing processes called top. I have never used this command and the common way to do this is with the ps command with some flags. I tried the command top and it is hard to scroll down and look at of the processes running. I believe this is a not a standard command and do not know why he talked about this command.

3) There was a question asked what happens if during an install you need to download a driver or something and what can you do. The issue was that this was in very minor detailed talked in the chapter not as install but on using terminal. The answer was all of the above where one answer was not mentioned in this first chapeter.

After reading the first chapter, I was having bad feelings of this book and feel that it really needed a couple of more reviews to correct errors and missing information before releasing to the public. I also do not really like how the material is presented and that could be because of my experience with Linux...

I have read a few more chapters and some of the material is just review for me and some is also new. One thing I have been noticing is that he focuses on a few Linux versions and not the one I use (Ubuntu) and I am not sure if the test is based on the either SUSE or Fedora Linux or just general concepts since the Linux versions are different.

I have been noticing more errors in his questions and also asking questions about things he briefly mentioned in the chapter but the questions are more specific and were covered necessarily in the chapter. Some I reasoned out correctly since I have a Linux background and some is based on interpretation. In his treatment of the Vi editor, some of his statements are contrary to things that I have seen using Vi.

I think there are other books that this one which I do not recommend... I am just waiting for my Amazon order to be shipped since it is a new book. The other books that are already out there are not so good. I looked at the Passport edition and it was so small that it seemed like it only prepared you for the test without the basics (I believe this is a no no)...

2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't cover the material to pass the test.
I failed the test by about a 100 points, I have taken other compTIA tests and never failed. I had used UNIX for about 20 years. I kind of knew this text might have problems when the server exercises never worked. I thought the first part of the book was a good starting point for learning Linux. I tried another text that used a lot GUI. There are no GUI questions on the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Linux + Book
This book is in great condition and I can't wait to learn more about Linux. ... Read more

The challenge of securing U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) information systems has grown significantly. A new approach to information assurance certification and accreditation (IA C&A) is needed to effectively extend the IA C&A process to aggregations of systems and improve their security. An examination of current policy shows that a number of changes could enable the IA C&A of aggregations of DoD information systems on a common platform. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars it should get a negative rating
This is the worst networking book I have ever read. There is nothingworthwhile in the book. In fact the authors best advice is to go and takethe Novell certified courses. If I had the time to do that I wouldn't havebought the book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money
I'm amazed at the glowing reviews I've read on this page. This book was a complete waste of my time. It offers no test preparation whatsoever, so prospective CNEs should shop elsewhere. The first 8 chapters of the bookare space-wasting drivel that have nothing to do with learning this OS orpreparing for these tests. The chapters that claim to cover specific testsinstead seem to cover the more obscure facets of NetWare.I have passed 4of the 6 tests needed to become a CNE and I have done so without anyassistance from this book. I suggest people read the CNE Study Guide forNetWare 5 by David James Clarke which is admittedly very corny and readslike an advertisement for Novell at times but is still packed with way moreusable information than this book has. This book was a big disappointment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now this is why I review books.
The only thing in computer that remains constant is the fact that nothing remains constant. Novell's latest NetWare 5 is the perfect example. The changes for this operating system show how everyone is getting smarter andpassing the certification exams get harder. Where do you turn forhelp?

John Paul Mueller has put together a book that is called All-In-Oneand the name says it all. This book covers the Netware 5 CNA and CNEobjectives with clarity, detail and subject knowledge like no other book onthe market today.

In over 850 pages you'll also get information onNetware 3 and Netware 4 test objectives. Mueller makes easy work of passingand you'll find more information packed into the pages, giving one of themost complete editions going today.

Included is a cd-rom with studyquestions and fun test that I really enjoyed. Also there is "jeopardy"style game without Alex, this makes the learning process easier and morebooks should be using this method of training. For those needing to passand those interested in the subject this is your book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for novices like me!
I picked this book up as a complete novice. All I knew was that the technicians in my deparatment were earning a lot more money than me and I wanted to get in on it.I had tried another book, but it was way too complex, so I picked up this book thinking it would be more of the same. Was I ever surprised. This one explains networking in terms that theaverage person can underderstand.

This is also the only book that talksto the CNA as well as the CNE.I have no desired to become a CNE rightnow, but I feel this book will be equally helpful if I decide to become aCNE later.

The first part of the book was the most helpful when I gotstarted because it provided useful tips on where to get funding and how tobuild a case for certification with my company.I also found the bookhelpful after I got my certification because it helped me figure out whatto do next.

The hand's on tutorials were the most useful part of thestudy section of the book for me.Once I got finished with the hands ontutorials, all I needed was a little practice to pass the exam (somethingthe author suggests that you do).The questions were helpful, but didn'treally reflect what Novell asked me on the test.I felt they helped meprepare for the exam, but I would have preferred questions that looked likethe questions on the exam. The games are fun, but not very useful.Thesections on what to do for further study were very good, but didn't go farenough.I got lost a few times.Hopefully the author will make thissection longer the next time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!
I don't like exam guides that pretend to give you all of the answers because they normally give me a false feeling of security that always disappoints on test day.I found this book didn't give me that false senseof security.Instead, it provided me with exercises that helped meactually learn the material that I needed to know in order to pass theexam. The result? Not only did I pass the exam with flying colors, but Ifeel that I really know the material now. That's what really counts.

Thehighlight of the book for me was the hands-on exercises.I showed them toa friend who said they were similar to those provided in the course. So, Ifigure that I saved a lot by buying this book.

The questions and fun testwere very helpful as well. However, as the author pointed out, theyweren't the same questions that I received during the test. All that theywere designed to do is help me think through the kinds of questions that Imight see on the exam.

The puzzles and games were a bit weak, but fun.Idon't feel I learned everything that I could have from them if the authorhad made them a little more focussed.Still, I learned something from themand in a different way from other parts of the book.

I also learned quitea bit from the first part of the book. For example, I used the informationto get a raise out of my boss after I completed my CNE.The raise alonewas worth the purchase price of the book.

John was also very helpful whenI contacted him via email. He has a great deal more knowledge than appearsin the book. The only dissappointment with author support was his Website, which is a joke right now.Still you can't judge the book by theauthor's Web site, which is why I gave this book five stars. ... Product Description
A preparation guide for the Cisco certification exam on bridges, routers, and switches and an on-the-job reference for switching and routing information. Topics covered include voice/data integration, configuring token ring switching, and Cisco's latest Quality of Service techniques and services. Previous edition: c1999. DLC: Routers (Computer networks)--Examinations.Amazon.com Review
As author Andrew Bruce Caslow so eloquently states, CiscoCertification: Bridges, Routers, and Switches for CCIEs is focusedsolely on providing a structured roadmap to Cisco CertifiedInternetworking Expert (CCIE) certification. At the very least, itwill help you master the portion of certification that pertains toconfiguring, monitoring, and troubleshooting the Cisco equipmentreferenced in the title. A massive volume--the table of contents aloneis 34 pages long--the coverage within ranges from general guidelinesfor port configuration to information on bridging nonroutable trafficto details on navigating the Cisco Internetworking Operating System(IOS).

As is common to this genre, the book is replete withconfiguration commands, diagrams, and tables. However, it maintains amore pragmatic tone than most as each chapter ends with some or all ofthe following elements: a summary, a professional developmentchecklist, references for further study, and a "Can You Spot theIssues?" section containing networking word problems. The answers tothese problems are found in one of the book's appendices. Alsoincluded is a section devoted to test preparation and test-takingtechniques that details the skills assessed during the CCIE exam aswell as commonly encountered testing landmines. An admirable effort, this granular but well-organized tome certainly appears to meet itsstated goal. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For it's time, this book was a 'Must-Have' for the CCIE R&S Lab
"Cisco Certification - Bridges, Routers and Switches for CCIEs" by Caslow and Pavlichenko was admittedly published a few years ago.For it's time, this book was the `must-have' book to learn advanced configurations for the CCIE Routing & Switching lab.The authors are excellent teachers, and are able to explain complex subjects in an easy to read style. To find out what Bruce and Val are up to nowadays - check out their website at NetMasterClass.net.They have foregone writing an updated copy of this book and have instead focused their efforts on preparing top-notch labs to test one's knowledge before walking into the CCIE R&S lab.Still, in spite of this book's age, if you can pick up a copy today, you will not be disappointed.

I give this book 5 pings out of 5:
!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good condition
I received this book within about 2 weeks after my order. It's in near new condition.I am satisfied.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Old
This book is too too old. It's a waste of money...

2-0 out of 5 stars That was then, this is now...
I started my CCIE lab studies with this book in 2000, it was an easy read and I really liked this book, specifically the Frame Relay section which still applies to today's lab. But, I had to put a hold on studies for a while.
I started my CCIE studies again in 2002 and passed the lab in 2003.During that time I glanced at this book for a total of 20 minutes. There are simply so many other books by CiscoPress that are better than this one, although, again, the Frame Relay section very well done. But certain sections, such as switching, token ring, and quite a few others simply don't apply anymore. Also, the Lab exam is so different now, with 3550's, QoS, Multicast galore, that this book falls of the required reading list.
I do think the author did a great job on this book initially, but it needs a facelift of major proportions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Aged, but still a classic.
Caslow and Pavlichenko have written quite possibly the definitive CCIE preparation book.Unlike most books in the field they focus not just on the relevant technologies, but also strategies for getting straight to the heart of the problems you will face both in the written and practical exams.

The second edition is dated now.The written exam has changed as of August '02, with the practical test due to change in November '02, but this does not render the book completely out of date.No CCIE study guide pretends that it can cover the subject completely without other references, and this is no exception. If you keep an eye on the Cisco CCIE blueprint and supplement your reading with more specific tomes on the recent additions to the exam you will find the methodologies in this book become the core of your exam strategy.

The 3rd edition of this book is currently being prepared and should be available by the end of 2002. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a worthwhile read!!
I just took the test yesterday and passed, first try. This book is well constructed in terms of keeping the user interested. Without saying technology has it's fun, sexy areas and the grueling, mind numbing areas that will bore you to tears no matter how much you love computers - this book balanced that out nicely so that you are not reading 400 pages of sure-fire insomnia cure. Likewise, with the accuracy - I have been working as an admin for a few years now and what I did know matched Mike's knowledge almost perfectly. All in all it is definitely worth your time whether or not you decide to take the test. However, it is sad this book will be out dated after the first quarter of 2005. (The new test comes out.) However, I would definitely buy another book buy Mike Meyers; I have no doubt that the 3rd edition will be just as good.

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of Date
I am very disappointed in this book.I used the A+ book to study for and pass the exam but the Network+ book was a grave disappointment.

The difference in the material on the test and what is stressed in the book and on the practice questions makes me believe that this book was written for an older exam.Even the format of the questions differed from the ones in the practice exam.

I bought the book on the basis of my experience with the A+ book and cannot recommend it for the Network+ exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars A well written, effective study guide.
Thank you, Mike!I just passed my Network+ exam with 860 out of 900, using this guide as my primary study source.I also bought his 600 practice questions bundled with a Prometric exam voucher for $157 from his website, www.totalsem.com.The practice tests were quite close to the actual exam.I recommend following up with the Network+ certification soon after completing the A+ certification because there is a large overlap in material.Together these certifications can be used to cover the elective exam requirement for Microsoft's MCSA certification.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a great certification book!
If you have read by past reviews of IT books you know that I'm pretty unforgiving toward sub-par certification books.

Thankfully, Mike Meyers, "Network+ Certification All-In-One Exam Guide" is a glowing example of how lots of experience, great writing and skillful editing can unite to form a beautiful book. This is rare in the days of, "can't wait to get it to press (profit)" publishing.

Meyers writes VERY clearly, gives detailed examples, plenty of illustrations (which really helps me to remember) and terrific, easy-to-understand analogies. It is actually a joy to read!

I haven't taken any practice tests yet, so I'm unsure how well Meyer's focus and depth are appropriate for the exam. However, it seems to me that Meyer's differs from other authors in that he provides a lot of detail, but then explains the details in such a way to make them understandable and thus EASY to remember!I really quite amazed because I haven't yet found an author who is as capable of doing this.

Meyer's tone is perfectly balanced between the two extremes of being too dry and too humorous.I can take the dry humorless tone of some authors but the intrusive- often stupid- humor of other authors have lead me to sometimes return books the same day I've purchased them.In short, I find Meyer's tone unobtrusive and actually refreshing- and I tend to be very picky about such things.

Great job Mike!

Update July 11, 2004:

Ok, I've taken my Network+ exam and passed (846 out of 900).Meyers book was not the only preparation material I used though. The Exam Cram 2 Network+ review book is excellent. It goes into more detail than Meyer's book, but you really need to first read Meyer's book to understand the Exam Cram 2 fully. In addition, I used the Transcender practice exams which were right on the money- very similar to the actual exam.I also tried the 2nd Boson practice exam which was only ok.The practice exams in Meyer's book were much easier than the actual Network+ exam but is a good review before tackling the tougher Transcender exams.Best of luck to you!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad..but use a good exam practice cd
Mike Meyers is funny in his computer humor (probably meant for true computer geeks). He really needs to focus more on the facts of the exam instead of attempting to be the other Mike Meyers...which he isn't.I like the book it was really easy to read and he made a point to specify what pertained to the exam. I passed the exam on 4/16/2004 with a 740.I have to admit I used the transcender simulated exam test and it was fairly close.I think in the end that you need to know the OSI layers inside and out and focus on the ridiculous memorization of the PORTS for ftp, smtp...etc to pass. But if you read this and do some exam prep it should be a breeze.keep up the good work Mike. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Book in really good condition! and has the cd not opened.
I was really satisfied with the book I bought with the CD still in the back of the book not opened so that I can use it with the book itself.

I was really happy about the price I paid for the book also.

Thanks.

I'm relatively new to the Metal Gear fanbase.A friend of mine bought MGS2 and 3 a few months ago and I watched her play.I was immediately sucked into the storyline and soon enough I was playing them myself, even though FPS is not my usual genre.I got both MGS2:Substance and 3(original) used at GameStop for $[...].Since finishing them, I've wanted to play MGS1 but I wanted it cheap and in good condition.

I was hesitant to get the Essential collection because I already had Substance and the Subsistence in this set didn't have the extras I wanted (namely the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2).I managed to snag this set for $[...], which I consider to be a much better deal considering I already had part of the set.

I haven't played them yet, but the packaging is very attractive and I can display my MGS collection with pride (no used price stickers!!!).

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Textbook
I love these online books. They're cheaper then my bookstore books. Came in time for class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great study tool for the ICND
I purchased this book after failing the ICND when I studied with the Sybex CCNA guide. I highly recommend the Sybex book if you are a networking newcomer. It explains everything in easier terms and does a great job of prepping for the INTRO. I would follow up Sybex with this study guide. After hitting the highlights of this book and using the priorities it sets I passed the ICND.

Also, I wouldn't study ISDN as heavily. I wasn't asked a single ISDN question on either ICND exam. I might have been lucky or Cisco is phasing ISDN out of the exam because it is going out of date.

Overall, this is a good way to pass the ICND.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for CCNA students
If you are preparing for the CCNA Exam, this book is the best. I have taken some courses about it, and there were still gray areas of knowledge. the way this book explains them is great. I feel now prepared for the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book and Even Better Boson Engine CD
There are good books that are comparable or even better than these guides out there. However, the practice exam software that comes with the books is what differentiates them from other books. It uses the Boson engine (just as good as Trasncender) and although I would still recommend that you buy the ExSim-Max Exams from Boson to make sure you know everything you need to know, the practice exam that accompanies these 2 books is excellent. I found some errors in a couple of questions but Cisco released many updates that are loaded automatically when you start the engine and the errors were corrected.

I also bought McGraw Hill CCNA Exam 640-802 which also comes with the Boson engine, but the questions are poor compared to the ones that come with the CISCO Press CCNA Official Exam Certification Library. Just to make sure I was prepared, I bought the Boson ExSim Exams and was glad I did. It is loaded on the same engine, so you also have the ones that come with Cisco available together. I got a very good discount because I had the book from McGraw Hill too.

This library has all the topics that you need to study but make sure you know everything very well. If you're not sure, do yourself a favor and buy Transcender or Boson ExSim. It's not just because they help you be prepared for the test format. These tools will not only point out your weaknesses but they will also help you learn as they explain in detail why each answer is or is not correct. You actually learn. Memorizing for CCNA helps very little if it helps at all but Transcender and Boson work like great tutors. Although they are expensive, they are cheaper than taking the test again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent book
I am glad i choosed this book, although I havent finished reading it, I've learn a lot, remembered a lot and trained a lot using this Kit. It is a must to have for anyone pursuing CCNA AND further Cisco Certifications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best service ever!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great books, great author
Just passed the ICND1 640-822 with flying colors and I owe it to this book.Frankly I've got a couple years on the job experience behind me so that is a huge help but this book fills in all the blanks and theory you don't always get (basically the "why" it works not just the how to configure and make it work).

Great book, easy to read for a dry subject matter and highly recommended.Started reading on the ICND2 to upgrade my CCENT to a CCNA and I can tell its going to be a great book also. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars used for boson test engine
I used CCNA: Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide: Exam 640-802 to 60% prepare for the exam. I used this book for the boson test engine because for some reason the author's ability to get information to stick in my brain was tough. I used CCNA 640-802 Network Simulator to prepare for hands-on which was about 30% of my time. If you can use this to pass instead of Todd's book, that's great, but the more books the better in my mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cisco Book to BEGIN learning from
Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices, Part 1 (ICND1).

So I thought this book was a well laid out book for what I was trying to get out of it.I am trying to get my first Cisco Certification and wanted something from CiscoPress - as I feel that they have the best book to study from.

I liked how the book was organized and how it progress through the information.I thought the clarity on subjects was excellent.

I wanted the book to have current information for me to study from and I surely does. This is a book on Cisco routing and it reads as such.

I will continue to purchase CiscoPress books as I progress through my certifications - In my opinion they are just better books to learn from.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Content, Poor Editing
All in all a good book on networking. The book could be organized better, 6 chapters over 463 pages makes for a little rough reading, they could have broken it into more, less broad chapters.

The end of chapter quizzes are AWFUL.I scored about 70% on the first chapter, but some of their explanations we're glaringly wrong.I went to the Cisco press website and downloaded the errata for this book, and there are 8 MISTAKES IN THE FIRST CHAPTER'S QUIZ ALONE!There are only 50 questions, COME ON!5 more mistakes in the second chapter quiz...you get the picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Networking Book
I purchased this book towards preparation for the CCNA exam, and for my own learning purposes, to help me in
configuring my own network set-ups and installations.
I liked it so much, its clarity and detail, that I enrolled at SUNY Farmingdale, Cisco Networking Academy and
Computer Science Dept. to learn even more, and prepare myself for a new trade or occupation as a computer net-
working technician; with website programming, design and maintainence as a minor. I already am a hardware and
electronic technician, and this would round out my skill set and enable me to achieve my goals.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the nuts and bolts of computer networking, exam or not. It
will be money well-spent by you if you can apply the concepts in the real world, at home and/or elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars A CISCO CCENT Book
It is a great book, good organized but its not sufficient to complete the CCENT. To pass CCENT successfully, you most read it with books like
1. CCNA ICND1 640-822 CCENT Study Guide and Examination Guide Q&A, by thaar al_taiey.
2. CCENT/CCNA ICND1 Official Exam Certification Guide, 2nd Edition, by Wendell Odom.

Windows 2000's purpose in life is to facilitate networking, with its various Server machines hosting community resources and its Professional boxes collaborating securely. If you're aiming to become a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), especially a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), you need to understand the material in MCSE: Windows 2000 Network Administration Study Guide. It's designed to help you prepare for the Implementing and Administering a Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure exam (70-216), and it succeeds at that. Perhaps more importantly, the book teaches the practical aspects of network construction and management in a Microsoft environment.

A typical section has to do with security for remote access services, beginning with what purpose the technologies serve, and all of the relevant pieces of the system--this is where all the acronyms get decoded. With the groundwork laid, you learn how to do the relevant hands-on work: there are explicit instructions for configuring callback and setting the number of failed login attempts that causes account lockout, among other tasks. Some tips and a chapter outline conclude the coverage, and an exam-like quiz (with annotated answers on separate pages) concludes each chapter. --David Wall

Topics covered: The material Microsoft says you need to understand in order to pass the Implementing and Administering a Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure exam (70-216), including domain names and their resolution with the Domain Name Service (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) setup and operation, remote access, routing, and security. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good for ground up tutorial but should also look elsewhere
This book covers many of the most of the basics you need to know in the MCSE exam (DHCP, DNS, WINS).

However, topics on static routing, OSPF, RIP, multicast routing, certificate of authority are definetely not covered enough. You are not given the picture on how OSPF, RIP, multicast and unicast routing, actually works.

If you think you can pass the exam with this book alone, don't bet on it unless you have plenty of experience. My advise on anyone who wishes to take this exam should also purchase the 3 Win2k resource kits (TCP/IP, Internetwork, Distributed System) for a very complete coverage on all the topics covered in this book. With these 4 books, I passed the exam on first try and completed CCNA with ease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good beginning
I believe an excellent job was done of often troubling areasof infrastructure and DNS, and while solid studying is required in addition to simply using this book in order to pass 70-216, this book will get you started

2-0 out of 5 stars BIG Book, little information.
Lots of words, but little useful information.I want a book that gets to the meat, and this is not it.I have been working with Windows for a long time.I think this book was written for a beginner, but I think it would be too confusing. I found the material very wordy and hard to follow.I got this book because of the reviews, I just don't understand how other give it 4 stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars Be careful of other reviews...
Depending on who you ask, this book will help you pass the 70-216 exam. The author is very good at explaining most of the topics. The print is nice and big so you won't go blind reading it.For those who wish to pass the exam, this book will help.

However, the book does little more than give someone a very basic understanding of the major topics for the exam.Perhaps the biggest fault with this book is that it is very disorganized. Many topics which are related are spread out over several chapters which makes learning the material very confusing. Some of the major topics like RRAS (Routing and Remote Access Server) are very poorly written as well.Do you hate it when you read a book and the author makes reference to a later chapter without fully explaining the point that he/she is trying to teach? There are many such instances of this throughout the entire book.

The diagrams do very little to help show the reader what the author is trying to teach.Unfortunately, the CD is just as bad.The exam questions are good practice though and I like the fact that they are not similar to the real exam. However, many people will not like this fact since the exam is the main reason they would consider purchasing the book.If you're serious about buying a book that will help you learn and pass the 70-216 exam than look elsewhere. If you are a professional with experience who wishes to prepare for the exam, you will find this book lacks detail. If you don't care about long term learning and just wish to pass the exam this book may help you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book. Easy to read
Its the best book available now for this test. Easy to read and it covers all the oficial topics. If you're looking a good Study Guide for the 216 test, this is the best choice!

Unfortunatly, CD and Simulation Software that comes whitin is not so good. You can not review your mistakes after taken a test;CD sound's quality or audio is not the best either.

Studying well all this book's topics and also buying and reading Windows 2000 TCP/IP Troubleshooting too, of same authors, you can take the test without any problem or fear. ... Read more

In the certification craze of 1999-2001, tens of thousands of people earned their Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) ratings. Those certifications are expiring now, just as Microsoft is coming out with Windows Server 2003 to replace the Windows 2000 family of operating systems. There may be a real opportunity for those who earn the Windows Server 2003 certification--and that's where MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Core Requirements comes in. This four-book set (which comes with quiz software and a 180-day laboratory version of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, plus a coupon for 15 percent off the cost of each of the four exams), combined with some hands-on practical work, should be all you need to earn the new MCSE rating or the Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA) certification.

Each of the four books (each with a separate author) covers the published requirements of a single exam. Coverage tends to be text-heavy--even procedures rely mostly on text and use few screen shots. This goes to reinforce the fact that these are serious books for people with a pretty good idea of what they're doing already. Chapters typically begin with conceptual coverage of their subjects (using diagrams to illustrate the relationships among network entities in many cases) and move on to illustrative procedures to try. Chapters then conclude with carefully considered discussion questions. The answers to the questions appear in an appendix, complete with explanations of why the correct answers are what they are. --David Wall

Topics covered: The published exam requirements for the MCSE/MCSA core exams: "Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Environment" (70-290), "Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure" (70-294), "Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure" (70-291), and "Planning and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure" (70-293). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Craig Zacker is a fantastic technical writer. He presents his materials in a clear, concise and straightforward manner. He wrote two different text books for this course, this one and also the Microsoft Official Academic Course: Planning And Maintaining A Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure (70-293) (Academic Learning). I actually used both to prepare for this exam. I left my program at school early to take a job. This is the second course that I have completed in self-study. Zacker's books were a great asset.

This book goes into much greater depth and has more exercises than the other book by Zacker for the same exam. This book is intended for use if you're already in IT and are preparing for the exam. One of the great advantages of this series is that the self study method is much cheaper and you can work at your own pace.

Zacker is an excellent writer and a clear communicator. His books are always a pleasure to read and a joy to use.

3-0 out of 5 stars Uhhh....
I'm still trying to get through the first book 2 years later. But what's the hurry?I can always start my training tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow...

Seriously, though, these books look a lot like the ones I used to study for my first MCSE, on NT4.Full of most of what you need to pass the exam, plus a lot of junk you don't.I think they're an attempt to trick/force you into learning enough to be more than a paper MCSE while soaking up enough info to pass the test.

The "knowledge" contained herein is no substitute for real world experience, but is daunting to tackle even for a seasoned professional. If you really know computers, and just want test info, I'd recommend something like the Transcender exams instead.

So with that said, I believe if you are going for tests, and you already own 70-291 and 70-298 there is no reason to go out and get the MSPress of 70-293 since the material would have already been covered...

One purchase. Expert training on limited hands-on experience. A near-guaranteed pass. Does it get any better? Not really.

Like your peanut butter in my chocolate, the combination of Sybex's bestselling CCNA Study Guide and the e-trainer network-simulation software mesh wonderfully. In fact, if truth be told, they always were intended to be sold as one unit; the book contains a lot of rote exercises that is a jumble of instructions if you're not sitting at a terminal, and the CD comes with practically no instructions at all. Put together in the CCNA Certification Kit, however, they create a force to be reckoned with.

But first, let's list for you what's in this little bundle of joy. The CCNA Study Guide is a densely written but comprehensive tome; the writing can be intimidating at times, but Lammle is to be commended for trying to show the reader the reasons that certain networking topics work, instead of merely providing you with lists of items to memorize. The concepts become particularly daunting during the chapters involving TCP/IP subnetting and VLAN trunking--but meticulous rereading will reward you not only with exam-passing knowledge, but with a deep understanding that will serve you well in the corporate world. There are only two slight disappointments: one is the chapter on WAN networking, which is a trifle light compared to the fact-packed density of the rest of the book; the other is that this book is not for absolute beginners, as it skips very quickly over such essential concepts as Ethernet networking and cabling types.

There is a third flaw here--fortunately, it's nonexistent in this bundle. A large portion of the Guide consists of simple exercises to be run on Cisco routers--which normally is a problem for the CCNA student. Most people don't have access to, and cannot afford, the roughly $2,500 in equipment that it takes to set up a sample lab. But that's where the CCNA Virtual Lab e-trainer comes in; it's a software package that emulates a network that consists of three Cisco routers, a Catalyst 1900 switch, and a couple of WAN links.

For what it does at the price, it does it well. It's not, by any means, a full-fledged simulation, but it does emulate most of the basic commands well enough for you to pass--and the amount of learning you'll get from the "hands-on" experience is exponentially better than any amount of book learning. Tinkering around with your own setup will help you remember the oft-cryptic Cisco commands and password levels better than anything else, and the exercises given to you in the study guide will suddenly become full-fledged workshops that expand your learning.

Now, there are those who have criticized the Virtual Lab for many, sometimes valid, reasons: not all the basic commands are adequately supported, the interface is clunky, there are known bugs, and it's useless beyond anything but the CCNA level. (If you go on to the next level of the Cisco exams, most of the advanced commands aren't supported.) But there is a saying in the industry that should be well taken here: "Close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades." Yes, there are better Cisco simulator programs. Yes, there are cheaper ones. No other offering, however, has the range of features and depth that you'll find at this price--more importantly, it's enough to pass. Must you have perfection when you can have a passing grade?

In short, the strengths of each item in this boxed set shore up the weaknesses of the other--and, as such, it's a vital tool in the arsenal of any CCNA aspirant. Highly recommended. --William Steinmetz ... Read more

Outer container got squished in transit but materials in great shape and cd new and sealed in sleaves.

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA latest book author Todd Lammle
I found this book to be excellent.
It gives in-depth explaination about Routing Protocols and everything else that has to do with networking.
I can compare this book with other books of Todd Lammle
and I find that this book is a great improvement over other books.

I definitely would recommend this book to every-one that wants to pass the CCNA exam.

It couldn't have written better!

Also the CCNA Router Simulator is a must. CLI Commands you better know inside out!

The FastPass Book is the topping of the cake. This is the latest fase just before doing the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Complete Material for CCNA
I think this is the most complete material for CCNA studies. The Study Guide covers all topics of the test and it's written in an easy understanding way. The Fast Pass is a really great book for review and we can focus on our weak points. The Virtual Lab is not the best simulator but is suitable for preparing for the test.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very displease with AMAZON and the package
Displeased with this entire transaction.First, the package was received with box seal labels already broken but NO SOFTWARE was opened. Second, package contains two study guides however, both books read exacly the same, almost word for word.ThirdI returned the package to AMAZON with a thorough explaination of the above and they would only refund $72 on a $144 purchase, 50%, even though no software had been opened. Upon finding this out, I promptly e-mailed them back with instruction to halt the refund and return my package, they ignored my request and did not respond back to my e-mail, they went ahead and processed the rediculous refund. I'll think twice before doing any more business with AMAZON.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not up to CCIE standard
Sorry Cisco I love your stuff but this book falls well below the standard I would expect from one of your publications. I'm a CCIE I passed my lab Jan 2001 and took my recertification 2 years ago in IP routing. My job has changed a little since then and I no longer have as much routing exposure as I used too I'm now all LAN at a large datacenter and some OSPF. Anyway I got this book to help me with my second recert, I wanted a quick read it once and pass it guide. Well with the CCIE its just not possible, sorry but its simply not that type of certification not even the written you need to know this stuff DEEP, no shortcuts IMHO.

This book promises a lot but simply does not live up to it, as a CCIE I used this book to take my recert and failed. So I hit the real books, the one's that got me through the exam and lab 6 years ago, TCP/IP Volume 1 and now Volume 2 by Jeff Doyle, Lan switching for CCIE's, and Internet routing architectures from Halibi (BGP is also covered in the Doyle V2 book now), and passed the written exam with a 93%. I would also add a Cisco specific QoS book to the reading list as well for the 350-001 exam as there was a lot of QoS in the exam and Doyle does not cover it.

The titles above brought a lot stuff flooding back to me, stuff I forgot and stuff that the certification guides like this one were not able to restore from my memory.

Believe me there are no shortcuts to getting this I should know it cost me over $300 for the exam and 160 bucks on 2 certification books to find that out, oh yeah this also applies to the flash card book for the CCIE written also available from Cisco.

Positives are that the book does have a good general coverage of the subjects for day to day referance but no where near deep enougth and links to websites with the rest of the info you need but with this book and the flashcard book alone your not going to pass this the written exam. Its way to deep an exam for that save your money and get the Doyle books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Way Under Expectation
    Hi,
I'm a CCNP and CCDA and I've always used CiscoPress Certifications books to prepare my exams.
I bought this book hoping that, as the others, it would give me all the elements to pass the test. Oh...if I was wrong.
Soon after starting reading it I realized that this book wasn't teaching anything. Each topic was just mentioned and not really unfold as the exam requires.
I wasted a week reading it and...you know what? At the end I studied on my CCNP books, integrating what was missing with documents on Cisco CCO. I passed the written test this morning at the first try.
Don't waste you money on this. Please

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete Material
I bought this book in hopes of having an all in one resource for the CCIE written exam. This book barely touches the surface of some very important concepts for the CCIE written exam and is not enough for any real world task.

Another issue I have, is the author uses all the acronyms, but doesn't write them out.I have a great deal of experience in working with many of these technologies, so it's not such a big deal for me, but others may find this frustrating.

The CCNP level books (Routing, Switching) cover the technologies in much greater detail. The exam certification guide is extremely weak, and maybe good for a quick refresher prior to takeing the exam, or perhaps recertifying.Otherwise, I'd look for better material.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Not a One-Stop Shop
I am reviewing the CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Certification Guide (ISBN 1587200538), which is the official preparation guide for the CCIE R&S exam from Cisco Press. The book weighs in at 688 pages, which is about right for a book of its type. The problem is that the type of book that it is doesn't really work for an exam like the CCIE.If we were talking about the CCNA or one of the single CCNP exams, I'd say "sure, you can get it all in one book", but not the CCIE.This book is a lot like reading a menu in that you get enough information to get you interested in a topic and decide if you need to learn more. The problem, however, is that in the case of the CCIE exam, you don't need a menu, you need a cookbook! The actual purpose of this book, as stated in the Foreword, is that it should act as a late-stage exam preparation tool to help you assess our strengths and weaknesses and focus your study.Basically, once you've gotten to that late stage, you've been reading for about six months and all this book does is breezes over all of the stuff that you've already learned.Occasionally, you might hit something you haven't read before and might take a moment to fill in that particular gap, but largely you feel like you're wasting your time.A book covering this wide a range of topics is easy to stall out on.If you feel like you're not getting anything out of your valuable reading time, you really have no motivation to keep going.I personally stopped this thing halfway through, read a book on poker and then came back to it.

I think a better approach to future editions of this book might be to rewrite it as a preliminary study tool for the CCIE.They could take each of the blueprint objectives and write a chapter which explains in detail what knowledge and experience you need to have in order to pass that objective.Readers could use the end-of-the-chapter assessments to make a judgment call on how much studying they need to do on that objective. Each chapter should also make suggestion of where the reader could go to get additional knowledge on the topics covered in that chapter.See, what I was missing early on in my CCIE studies was a "test prep quarterback" to point me in the right direction.I think this book would keep the reader's attention better if it was recommended as the first thing to do in the test prep process, not the last.

Okay, okay... I think I've dwelled on the negatives quite long enough. There are some things I really liked about this book.First off, since it's widely known that CCIE candidates can never get enough practice questions, it'll be no surprise that I liked having the practice exam on the CD.I also liked the Scenarios at the end of each chapter. They really made you think and try to apply what you've read.I'd like to see an entire book of them.I also found the authors style to be very readable.Anthony Bruno took the challenge of writing a book that covers the entire CCIE blueprint and got it all into 688 pages. That takes a very concise writing style, and he pulls it off.

In conclusion, I'd have to say that I'd recommend this book to others, but as a preliminary guide and not as a final exam prep tool.Someone coming in cold, or even coming off of the CCNP exams, would really benefit from this book as indoctrination into the level of study necessary to prepare for the CCIE.I'd warn them, however, that this book isn't meant to be used as a one-stop shop. You really must read other books and get a lot more information off of CCO in order to prepare properly for the CCIE.

I give this book a 3 on my 5 ping rating scale.
    !!..!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good resource for the test
I am really surprised that this book is even passed off as a resouce to use by Cisco to pass the test. It touches on alot of things but only at a surface level. If you do pass the written it will not be because you read this book. Take my advice and the advice of others: save your money and spend it on the book by Rob Payne et al.

This is somewhat of a shock and disappointment because I used Bruno's CCDA book to prepare for that test and it was an excellent resource. ... Read more

    Folks,
Don't purchase this book. It doesn't contain any secrets for preparing for the CCNP exams. It's more a collection of disjointed ramblings, losely focused on Cisco's CCNP. It tells you rack rental is one way to get hands on experience but doesn't mention any rack rental companies. It suggests Boson NetSim is a good tool to have and that you could buy some books and study or attend courses or even a boot camp. It spends a lot of time telling you how great it will be when you have your CCNP.
I had to give it one star just to post this. ... Read more

It is very readable. A lot of good information and well paced out. Each chapter is marked with time, and ended with good questions for revision. Solutions are readily available to me at the end of the book. There is also an e-book so I can carry with me to my office. Between meetings, eating my lunch. I can maximize the use of my time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Appalling
I have not yet taken the exam, so I can only tell you about the material covered for it's own value.

The book's authors seem to know very little about UML and RUP, nor do they seem to care about the material. It's written in a sophmoric, disjointed style, somewhat akin to a kid copying sections of a report out of the dictionary. You will learn nothing about analysis and project management, at least nothing that will make much sense, except perhaps to use the made up Microsoft terms for everything instead of the common terms.

In as far as the test goes, I can only hope that the book is not as inadequate as people make it out to be.Since MS seems to be renaming everything in order to impose their branding, I hope at least to use it to pick up their lingo so I can have a chance to understand the questions and answers on the test.I give it two stars because it makes no pretense of being a primer for anything but the test, and for project's sake -- don't look at it as being a primer for anything else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Go get another book if you want to pass the exam
This book gets one star because it does not cover the material required to pass the exam.I would have almost failed the exam had I used just this book for my preparation.Luckiliy I have used online questions from one of the web-sited listed on Microsoft's web-site and that helped me to pass the exam.

The exam contains mainly case studies and this book gives only one of them from start to finish. The exam is mainly a comprehension sort of exam where you read the passage and answer the questions. So get a book that have those case-studies.

2-0 out of 5 stars confusing, vague, ambiguous, and difficult to read
This book uses words pretty loosely, and frequently confuses the readers. Explanations are not clear. Material is incoherent. Microsoft's proofreaders, reviewers, and/or editors did a poor job on this book. Buying it is a waste of money. Please look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pragmatic system construction guide
This guide describes MSF (Microsoft Solutions Framework) a methodology for building systems which Microsoft recommends. MSF includes mainly a process model, a team model, an application construction model and a deployment / supportability model.

MSF has similarities with other methodologies for software construction and includes things as use cases, object modeling, etc.

MSF is quite different from other methodologies; less formal than CMM; not object based as OOAD; not for extremely small teams like Crystal Clear.

The key value of MSF is its practical nature, it may however not be your best bet if the system you are developing has very heavy documentation requirements, depends on a sequential life cycle or you live in an organization at odds with the team model proposed. ... Read more

For those interested not just in passing a certification exambut in truly understanding what makes networks tick, Network+Certification Study System won't disappoint. Authored by one ofthe subject matter experts who helped create the Network+ exam, JosephJ. Byrne, this book is an excellent guide not only to the test but tothe underlying principles of computer networks.

This two-part bookincludes an excellent glossary with basic explanations ofnetworking-related items. Byrne's definition of a local area network(LAN) is a good example: "A LAN is a communications system much like atelephone system except that data, not voices, is usually shared. Inrecent years, the term network is often substituted when describing aLAN." Then there are sections that cover specific areas more fully, like the one on basic Ethernet concepts. It explains the data speedsat which Ethernet operates, explains that Ethernet breaks data intoframes, and then details how each frame must be between 72 and 1,518bytes and how you can tailor the size of the frame to improve networkperformance.

The book also discusses strategies for implementing abackup system, protecting the network from viruses, andtroubleshooting. Byrne encapsulates his approach here, "This entire[troubleshooting] process is really twofold. First you need to get atthe root of the problem, and second you need to fully document theprocess from problem to resolution." Each of the chapters ends with anexam preparation summary and a series of questions, the answers forwhich are provided in appendix 1. The chapters are also studded withexam prep pointers, which highlight those topics certain to be coveredin the Network+ test. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book's More of a Liability Than An Asset
I purchased this book as a secondary reference but it contains so many blatant errors that it's become more of a liability than a resource. I've searched for errata online but couldn't find any, suggesting that the publisher isn't willing to offer help to beleaguered users. What's especially disconcerting is that this volume was authored by "a member of the i-Net+ exam objectives team" which made it sound like an authoritative resource. Typos are expected in something as dry as an IT resource but explanations that build on obviously incorrect information make you question the author's long list of credentials.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Core Network + Exam Guide
I tested and passed the Network + exam yesterday and this book was my central study guide for the exam. The book contains a lot of information for 275 pages. The book provides step by step insight into networking which results in a mental framework of how various network types, topoligies and protocols work. The enclosed BeachFront Quizzer is a big help too! If you are inexperienced at networking you may also find it helpful to purchase The Encyclopedia of Networking by Osborne-McGraw Hill and TCP/IP Clearly Explained by Pete Loshin of Byte Magazine, and NT Server 4.0 by Osborne-McGraw Hill. These books will provide a greater level of comprehensive information, such as how individual routing protocols work, cable properites, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid foundation (but not the whole building)
Joseph Byrne's study guide is an excellent introduction to local area networking. The author writes with uncommon clarity and the material is comprehensive (if occasionally lacking in detail), focusing not only on technology but also on the "soft skills" and best practices of network technicians, the sorts of things that get and keep you employed. Any novice to the field should seriously consider this book as his or her starting point.

That said, I don't believe that this book alone will prepare anyone without significant experience to pass the Network+ exam (especially the 2001 objectives). It is Windows-centric and core concepts such as the OSI model, IP addressing, and name resolution demand more detail. And yes, as other reviewers have said, there are a few irritating typos. Despite these irritations, the book and bundled CD were very useful during my certification preparation, and they'll probably help you, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the price
This book is very well written and easy to understand. This is the only book I used to prepare myself for the exam. The exam pointers and practice questions were very helpful. The book covers just about all material onthe exam, I only encounterd one question on the exam that wasn't covered inthe book.Anyone that spends the time to read this book inside and outshould pass the exam.I passed with an 89%.
