5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book, can help pass with ease.
I have this book and I really enjoy it. It is really easy to read and it helped me pass with ease. I got really close to a perfect score on the test by reading this book. I suggest anyone that wants to pass the test to buy this book so that they too can be Network+ 2009 certified like me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average at best....
This exam will be replaced by a newer exam in July. Regardless, I was hoping for a book with some in depth knowledge (right to the point) and maybe some practice questions or a CD...something.

The only questions are the end of chapter questions. Not really too helpful and narrow in scope.

What really annoys me is the useless information. I promise you that 25% of the material I've read has a disclaimer at the end of it that says "Oh,by the way, you really don't need to know this..." or "this isn't covered on the exam...". Unfortunately, the author tells you this at the end of the section you've already wasted your time reading. I'm wondering how much more will not be on the exam that I've wasted my life on.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be much more concise
The Authors are clearly experts. They are clearly enthusiastic about their topic.I have little doubt that mastering the material in this book would lead to a passing grade on your test.Just know that you are taking the long way around the mountain.

My goal was to PASS THE TEST in a reasonable amount of time, with actual comprehension of the material.I was not looking to know everything there is to know on the topic.I didn't care to wade through minutiae and exhaustive background info on every topic. The exam covers a great deal of information & I didn't want to add to it unnecessarily. So, eventually, I gave up on this book and read Network+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide, Third Edition (All-in-One) by Michael Meyers and Exam cram.I passed with a 750 out of 900.I will keep this book for reference and further research. But, I can't recommend it as a Network plus study guide as there are much more efficient ways to pass that test.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're looking for 1 book to cover it all, it's this!
I'll keep this short and simple: this book has more than enough information to pass the Network+ exam.I agree with a prior reviewer that it was designed for mid-level IT people, but if you're already consider Network+ as a stepping stone to other network certifications, you should be comfortable with the terminology and setup of this book.

I used this as my main resource in 2006 and passed it with ease, and I expect the same for others. The practice tests were enough to test your knowledge as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool
I am about half way through this book, and it is really easy to read and learn the material you need to pass the exam. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for both exam and real life
Using this book I was able to score a near perfect score (94%). I think I missed one question. It helped to prepare me for those unique questions that you just weren't expecting. But beyond that it gives you a lot of real life experience (if you do the exercises in the book/cd).I had never touched macromedia Flash before, and so that was a great tool to learn some of, and others in the book/cd.If you want a great tool to assist in not only the exam but beyond, then this is the book for you. Some people reported it was too much (filler) or some other blah, many people look for a "Cliff notes" way to their exam pass, and this is not that type of book. The "Bible" type books are meant to be very packed with lots of information.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for exam
Very thorough coverage of the program. Good reference tool. Not for the beginner.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much waffle and repetition
This book is rather a hard slog, mainly because there's too much waffle. It made me wince to have to wade through paragraphs like "Web Browsers are HTML interpreters that are designed to understand and render hypermedia. Not only can browsers read HTML files, but they can also read graphic files, sound files and other types of media formats".

Compared to the For Dummies "CIW Foundations", this book is a real chore to read.Much of the content simply rehashes what you must already know since you must have already passed CIW Foundations, and the key facts you need for the Site Designer exam are scattered sparsely like pearls in pigswill. Sadly, there are very few alternatives to this book right now.Come on Dummies, give us a better Site Designer prep.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost...
I wasn't quite as impressed with this book as with the CIW Foundations book, but it still got the job done because I passed today with a 95%.That being said...

I read the book from cover to cover and took all the practice tests and exams on the CD-ROM.However, I did go online and supplement some research in as well.In some sections of the book, (such as the individual products), it went into a lot of extraneous detail, while in others, (such as the different internet societies & organizations (IAB, IRTF, IETF)), I ended up going to each's website individually to do additional research.

A good point about the book, is the "exam tips" thrown in periodically throughout the chapters. They're great sources of info for the exam.Take a good look at each of these.

So, in all. This was my prime study guide, but I would suggest some supplemental materials if you want to be safe.Good luck.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent tool for the test and beyond.
First of all let me congratulate you for taking the time and the effort of getting certified, if you are reading this means that either you wish to get certified with the best tools available or you are a designer looking to improve yourself, great, let's start.
About this book, this book is extremely long, but extremely useful for your web site design career, you will be reading material that is not covered in the exam but you will use in real life. Also, is excellent if you want to improve yourself as a designer and wish to have a resource book in case you encounter a new technology or refresh your terminology, it gives you tips and statistics that will make you a better designer.
I recommend this book; just give yourself time to read it. Some people like to read only the summaries, others like me, like to read the book from cover to cover, after all, you are getting certified to prove you to know how to design a web site not to prove you can pass "a" test.
The best feature in this book is the CD. It comes with a test engine that so far is the best I've seen, the drawback is after a few times of taking these quizzes, you will know the questions and the answers by heart. One feature that I really liked on the test engine was that if you answer wrong it will show you the correct answer right away. Be sure to allow enough time to read all the chapters, a month and half should be enough if you are disciplined (Assuming you are doing this after work) and take all the quizzes on the test engine.
One last thing, be sure to visit all the web sites that you can that are related to the exam, questions might have changed and new subjects might have been introduced since the time this book was written. Support your training with braindumps, online free tests and other people's experience. I wish I can help you more. Best of luck! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend for anyone taking the CompTIA Security+ Exam
I purchased The Ultimate Security+ Certification Exam Cram 2 Study Kit (Exam SYO-101) because of the extra exam questions you get with it.It contained 800 exam questions instead of 300 like other exam programs. You didn't feel like you got the same questions over and over like the other programs.I also used the Mike Meyers' CompTIA Security+ Certification Passport. The exam cram package gave a different take on the subjects. The pullout exam objective in front of the book was very helpful.I studied that just before going in to take my exam and passed with a score of 92%.I am a terrible test taker and I believe the Measure-Ups from the exam cram books helped me feel more confident taking the test. The exam cram books will help you pass the test if you know the information.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last a way to study just what you need!
I found this book excellent, I had just completed the 70-291 Infrastructure exam prior to purchase of Security+. I used MS press and Test Kings type study, with Sybase book. Tough and loads of things you think you need to consider...

If I had this book in 291 form, I am sure I would have aced this exam first time around, If this book is an indicator of other certification routes, then I know where my hard earned will be going in future... Que Certifications and their Exam Cram Publications!

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but confusing...
This book was good study material for the Security+ test but there were aspects of it that were confusing. Many of the answers to the practice tests directly contradicted information in the book and some questions were worded very ambiguously. The practice tests included actually made me doubt my ability to pass the exam but I still showed up to take the test anyway.I passed no problem.

Bottom line is....this book is decent study material for the test, it includes a pretty good overview of all of the objectives and covers all the important points, but the actually practice questions and tests are sub-par in my opinion.

PS:This book is for the earlier edition of Security+, not the 2007 edition. If you use this book to study for the 2007 edition (which I did) also be prepared to answer questions about WPA/WPA2 and anomaly-based IDS systems, which are not covered in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exam Cram 2 Security+ for the win!
I had a great experience with this bundle. The measure up test engine included with this package was fantastic. Iused this package exclusively for my studies (I recommend at least 2 sources normally for these types of test). I used this package for 8 days (yes, eight days) and passed my security+. I would just run 100 questions at a time then mark and review any questions I missed and take the test again with just the missed questions. I did this for the duration of the 8 days and would use the big book for reviewing areas I was consistently missing questions. Then rinse and repeat. For the price you just can't beat the value of this package.

4-0 out of 5 stars Security + Exam Cram
Overall the book was a good read and reference even though the exam is now at a 2007 level. The CD in the exam question book had some whopper wrong questions in it. There is 730+ questions in there and I found at least a dozen that the answer was wrong on. There is good study material here for the most part. It helped me pass the test on June 30th 2008. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product
I went to school for 2 semester to learn this subject. But when i read the book, i picked up all the little bits that were never taught in school but essential material for the test. Highly recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gets the Job Done
In working on my certification exams, I have used a variety of books from different providers: Wiley press, Thompson, Sybex and Microsoft Press. The official 'Approved Microsoft IT Academy' books in this series are great. I have used them for 2 of the Vista Exams and for 2 of the Win 2K3 Server exams. Greg Bott does a great job of introducing a lot of concepts and practices in a very short space. Botts' writing was a pleasure to read.

The key feathers that make this book great are: First, each chapter has a concise learning objectives at the beginning of the chapter. Second, the body of the chapters has practical exercises, and these exercises are further supplemented by Lab Manual. Bott writes in a clear concise manner. There are also three reader aids throughout the books that help you dive deeper. They are: Note - Real world examples, Important - Essentail information reinforced, and More Info - Cross reference material for additional resources. Then each chapter has short hands-on exercises, end of chapters review with a variety of exercises and case studies, and the chapter summaries that reinforce and confirm the key concepts of that chapter.

The Student CD has a plethora of extra resources to help you along. The eBook of the textbook. Practice software from MeasureUp with over 300 practice questions. PowerPoint slide for each chapter. And a second disk with the 180 day trial version of the Win 2K3 software so you can do all the exercises. This book will give you everything you need to prepare for and pass the 70-291 Exam.

Not only updated for latest CCNA exam (640-607), the CCNA Virtual Training Certification Kit offers added functionality by not just including a comprehensive training component, but adding a customized adaptive test engine and a powerful hands-on simulator. This three-in-one software product (Training, Testing, and Simulation) gives you all the tools you need to pass the CCNA exam with ease. The testing component lets you test your knowledge before you take the exam by letting you practice in a simulated test environment. 1-0 out of 5 stars Virtual Training does not work right
I have used cisco routers for years.
This simulator does not behave like a cisco router.

The simulator look like it was written using Macromedia products and does not even have appropriate context sensitive help.

Stear clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Todd Lammle's best effort for CCNA certification
Let's see, you are trying to get your CCNA certification. You have to take the 640-607 exam and you need the right study materials. Where are you going to find a training center? Where are you going to find a way to access router and switches? Most importantly where are you going to find a way to practice the exam before going live? Where can do all this and not go broke at the same time - well Sybex has put together my choice with this training kit.

This is by far the most complete software certification training kit on the market today bar none. With a virtual trainer that has you take a pre-assessment test to find out what you need to study. The Virtual trainer comes with over 900 questions and this trainer will adapt to your needs rather than just a run by the objective trainer.

From there you will work with the one of best Virtual labs, with over 20 labs and you can create your own if you want more. You practice with 3 routers 1 switch and 1 host; although I think more equipment could be added. I found that by having to configure 3 routers you practice the commands and configurations, and you can do the labs over and over again until you feel comfortable.

Finally there is a Virtual Test center with another 400 plus questions. The best thing about this was the different type of testing setups you have, from the fixed to random testing. When you complete the report gives you an analysis of your score to help you better gauge what to study. With all 3 applications you cover each and every objective, couple with Sybex CCNA Study Guide and this is the unbeatable package.

Overall you would be hard pressed to find anything close to this on the market. Sybex should package this with the CCNA study guide and maybe in future releases we will see this. As for the installation of the software, I was able to run on Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP professional. Well Done to Sybex for the complete and total package. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable
Good insight into both CCENT and CCNA.

The book from my point of view is not for people that don't have a history in the field of Information Technology. The reason towards my opinion originates from the constructive introductions of the book. The books is self explanatory, and the author does a great job when introducing each chapter. However the book simply dips really deep into the concepts, which is really good for a person that understands the concepts naturally (Not by recently memorizing)...

At the end of the line the book is the best out because it gives great comparisons to the real world, and a thorough explanation of each concept. Plus it includes a video tutor, and PDF version of the book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me.
Passed my CCENT exam with an 890-something (need 804 out of 1000 to pass), using only this book, so it worked for me. My previous experience is limited to CompTIA Network+ certification and I have no background in Cisco products. Now, for the book - I would recommend it. Very easy to read and well-thought out and written. I did find it funny that some of the screenshots were from many, many years ago so it's obvious the author is re-using material from old versions (but why rewrite something if you don't have to?).There are two CDs included - one in the very front of the book, one in the very back. Don't ask me why they didn't put both together. The first CD was a lot of subnetting (which I didn't need since I previously learned it through Lammle's excellent Network+ teachings). The second CD contains the Boson sim/practice exam software. This software is actually great and I can now see why Boson sells extra study products separately for a much higher price. Included in the Boson CD is about 160 or so practice questions (including a few sims). The software provides you with answers/explanations to many problems and even has a link to that particular part of the book (in PDF form) so you can review what you got wrong. This kind of backfires in a few spots, though, because some of the Boson material isn't covered in the text. This is to be expected when the software is made by a third-party that uses its own materials to create the text. So, you'll get something wrong, open that part of the book to see why you don't remember seeing that particular thing at all, and still not be able to find it because it isn't in the text to begin with. That is a minor aside, and it doesn't detract from the quality of the material, but if you use the software as a practice exam when your studying is done you may get an artificially lower score because it covers some material you haven't studied. And, yes, I know, the real test will have things you haven't studied as well, but in my opinion the practice test should see how much you remember from studying the book, and sometimes it doesn't.The Boson software actually does an excellent job of mimic-ing the look & feel of the actual exam, so you get a good heads up that way.One note for purchasers of used copies - the Boson software includes an activation code that requires you to register with Boson to download the software. Fine for the first purchaser of the book, but the second purchaser may find that he can't activate the software & download his practice exam!In sum, I recommend the book and am using Odom's ICND2 book to study for completing my CCNA track.Ah - one other warning - as of writing this, Amazon sells this book for about $26.You can buy this book combined with the ICND2 book for about $38 from Amazon, so if you are planning on tackling both tests it would be in your financial interest to purchase the two books in the bundled option instead of separately. The link for the bundle is

[...]

**edit** forgot to mention that I didn't like the fact that the book only has about 10 or so practice/review questions for each chapter. Would it have really been that hard to come up with a few more?I also used CBT Nuggets in my studying and would recommend that as a supplement to this book. I listened to it in my car on my 1-hour commute (one way) to work each day.Good luck!

1-0 out of 5 stars A+ Cert.DOES NOT GET YOU READY FOR TEST
Good overview of overall concepts, but not as final prep for test.Does not emphasize the specifics needed for to past the test.

Great book to start for someone with little or no computer background. Not good for tech who is studing up for test.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for the hardware exam, weak on the OS exam
For the record, I did pass both of the A+ exams, using just this book, but looking back, this book did have a couple glaring problems that costed 1 star each.If you are taking the hardware exam, this book is actually quite useful, but for the OS exam, you must take it with a grain of salt.

The first problem with this book were the test questions. The types of questions asked by the A+ exam were quite different than the ones asked at the end of each chapter in this book, so while the questions can help you remember important information, don't expect the test to be like what you see in the book.

The second, and more glaring problem was the fact that the OS exam chapters were much lighter in content than the chapters devoted to the hardware exam.TO give you an idea, the hardware exam has 7 chapters in this book, but the OS exam has 4 chapters. After studying for both exams vigorously, I passed the hardware exam with flying colors, but I failed teh OS exam. There were questions on the exam dealing with content that was totally absent from the book (NT stuff, some troubleshooting stuff, and some networking stuff).I had to study for the exam even harder using this book, and even then I barely passed for the same reason: some stuff just wasn't covered in this book.

To the credit of the authors though, the hardware exam portion of this book is excellent. They cover quite a bit of useful content, and the CD that comes with the book really helps with this exam too.I think this book can be used as a good reference for PC hardware and troubleshooting even if you finished the A+ exam.

In summary, the book was lop-sided in coverage and the test questions could be formatted differently, but as far as the hardware exam goes, this book was great. For the OS exam, try looking at other resources.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good book
I read this book in preparation for the A+ exam. It is a waste of your time. Go pick up a copy of Mike Meyer's All-in-One A+ Certification, it's a much better book. If I would've taken the exam after reading only this book, I would've failed, without a doubt.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Information, Well Laid Out, Help Me Pass Exam
I would definately recommend this to anyone taking the A+ certification. It is well laid out, and easy to work through. My only issue is the fact that the practice tests and questions were quite different from what was onthe actual test.Other than that, I would recommend to anyone looking atan A+ certification.I will continue to use Syngress books for my Net+ andMCSE track.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another great study guide by Syngress!
I have been through more than 7 of this series and this A+ book keeps up with the positive reputation of Syngress.Very well written, to the point and comprehensive.Used it to pass my A+ exam with a 96.Even if your notheading for the A+ exam, this one will give you a good understanding ofcomputer hardware and troubleshooting. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Failed the test but because I rushed it.
Good book on the subject and great for reference at work.
Amazon was great though, the shipping was fast and at the door when promised which meant a lot because I was under pressure.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless book
This is an absolutely useless book to prepare for this exam. The topics do not cover troubleshooting for protocols like EIGRP, BGP, OSPF etc that appear in the exam. Most of the information is being repeated over and over again in various chapters. I am not sure how Cisco Press can release such a useless book. It is better to consult braindump websites rather than reading this book. If you prepare for the exam using this book, you are wasting time.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is way too light for this exam
The methodology of the troubleshooting process is the easy part. This book would have been much better if it had broken down the troubleshooting sections for each layer and given you some concrete ideas about the most common things you might see.Definitely, an extensive treatment of debug output with explanations of what to look for would have been good.Bottom line, read the book so you know the methodology, but get another source because this one won't do it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Almost no relation to actual exam
Cisco should be embarassed to call this book 'official self-study test preparation'.Perhaps it should say 'Some basic thoughts'...The relation to the exam I just took was nowhere to be found.I think this book prep'd me for 1 or 2 questions out of 64.I'm totally disgusted.CiscoPress has lost all credibility in my mind. This book is a discrace.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for passing CIT exam
To summarize, this book is focused on troubleshooting methodology. It goes over procedures, guidelines, and methods. It is not intended as a specific blow by blow review of troubleshooting technology - you are assumed to already have this information through studying and job experience. The author is straightforward in his writing and does a good job of boiling down the information, and physically it is considerably thinner than the other study guides.

Unlike every other Cisco Press book I've read for the CCNP exam, this book is not plagued with editing errors. Finally.

The included CDROM is adequate, but there are at least three very obvious errors I counted.

There really isn't anything wrong with this book, but I gave it four stars instead of five because sometimes it wasn't as clear as it could have been (solving a problem in the Gathering Symptoms stage? I thought that happened at the Correct the Problem stage). Another reviewer thought Chapter 13, which covers scenarios, was valuable but I didn't get much use from it as it was basically rote repetition of earlier chapters with no additional detail.

I am assuming that people are buying this book to pass an exam, so the rest of my review focuses on how the book relates to it.

Essentially it covers all the areas Cisco outlines for the exam. If you know the material in this book, you should be able to pass. There are certainly exam questions that were not in the book, but solidly being able to answer book covered questions will keep you from failing. As with every Cisco test, you will be asked a few questions that are not in the book. Cisco makes it a point to make their certifications more rigorous than simply memorizing a slew of chapters without having to think.

If you are seeking certification, take this test last as the author assumes you have taken the other certifications already. You will appreciate that the preparation length for this book is much shorter than the others. I read the entire book, took notes, and prepared for a Monday exam over the preceding Saturday and Sunday. Any other test would have taken me weeks of preparation.

I am now a CCNP! Warm wishes and good luck! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars needed in order to pass the test
The book is essential to pass the test 90% of the questions are based on the book. If you can do all the questions on the CD by memory and study the chapters you will pass the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars The titles of the book and exam match! What else do you need?
Read this book, pass this test.

As far as being a reference for this information without regard to the certification, I like it.

It is well written and makes sense.I have several other certifications (MCSE NTv3.51 '97 through CCIE '00 and CCVP '06) and this book works as well or better than the books I had for those certifications.

If you don't mind an electronic copy, the PDF of this book has been made available without cost on Juniper's web site.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent book for network engineers
It is very suitable book for JNCIS candidates. You need deep network knowledge before read it. JNCIA study guide is a good supplement. To pass an exam own hands-on experience with JN routers is very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good supplemental reference
I got this book after I had already passed my JNCIS, but I still find it very valuable.I used it to help strengthen my understanding of JUNOS and the networking topics I was weak in. This book is a great supplement to the JUNOS reference materials available online which so often tell you vaguely what a command does, but don't give you any context for why you might need to use it.It provides good examples and gives good descriptions of what is going on and shows how to verify behavior with the CLI.I like to carry the CD with my laptop for reference.

The book assumes that the reader has at least a JNCIA level of experience, so it skips most of the introductory topics such as CLI and hardware architecture covered in the JNCIA guide.Although I think that a person could pass the JNCIS if they just studied this book very well, it would be much easier if they have some basic knowledge and experience with Juniper M and T series routers (at least at the "JNCIA level").

5-0 out of 5 stars A good preparation guide
This book does a good job of explaining the different networking topics in a simple and clear manner. The topics covered in the book are comprehensive and more than sufficient to prepare the reader for the JNCIS test.

The book also has enough details to serve as a useful networking reference guide for readers who has already passed the JNCIS exam. ... Read more

Divided into six parts, the book begins with an overview of network security threats and helps you identify the causes of network security problems. Part I also contains information that teaches you how to establish network security policies and secure the network infrastructure. Part II describes methods for securing remote dial-in access using CiscoSecure ACS and Cisco IOS Software AAA security features. Part III focuses on protecting Internet access by identifying the basic components of a perimeter security system and configuring perimeter routers and the Cisco PIX(r) Firewall Feature set. 5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have for Cisco Security
As I am currently working on my Cisco Security Specialization (CSS) I have read all books related to CSS. Out of the four books this is definately one of the most valuable references when it comes to Cisco network security. This book is well-structured, referencing all the potential threats and countermeasures that exist to network security. I really praise the author for his clear explaination ofIPSec and PIX concepts. For those seeking to pass the MCNS 2.0 exam, this is a great reference and study guide. All necessary topics are covered, except the Cisco VPN Client, which has been added to the MCNS exam during version 2.0. Overall, a great book by a great author, a definite must-have for the future CSS1, CCIP/CCIE security specialists.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book but mistakes make it a difficult read
This book has good coverage of all cisco security technologies. PIXes are there with intense detail but no config examples with access-lists at all. All examples use conduit and static. I wont blame it as this book is published in Jan 2001 and pix access-lists became famous around the beginning of this year. The biggest problem is config mistakes, i wasted hours to figure them out and finally decided that they r definitely wrong. So read it but watch out for mistakes. 3 stars becoz of this

4-0 out of 5 stars I like!
Cisco Press is funny because some of their books series are error-few and others are error-some. I really liked the content of this book though. I reference it for specific subjects as much or more than any other good book I own. I wish that it would give better descriptions of more detail on some key commands and not just the cut and paste of the command in the description field. Other than that there is a broad range of decent security info.

3-0 out of 5 stars Most errors ever published in a book
They should contact Guinness on this one.Almost every page has some type of error.(Mislabeled IP addresses, mistyped configs, etc.)It's amazing!Seriously though, the content in the book is good. However, the number of errors is bad.If there weren't any errors, I would have given it a 5.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference but Kinda Wordy.
This is a must have book if your going for Certification. However,If you just want to learn how to work the different components I would recommend "Cisco Secure Internet Security Solutions"CSISS is not as wordy as this and gets into the nuts and bolts of the components.

MCNS is excellent for those who may normally tend to ask more questions in class, or may have a little trouble understanding the theory behind the components.

These two books go Hand-in-Hand to give you not only the certification but the know how to use the Cisco Secure Components. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A pretty good "thin" book
This book didn't quite measure up to earlier exam cram books I had been exposed to. It was very light in a lot of areas which are very heavily weighted in the 70-642 exam objectives. The practice questions were actually quite good and were, to an extent, a good measure of ones knowedge of the material.
Overall it's a good book to use while reviewing for the exam or as a second source. One good point the book has it that it does a very good job of explaining Print and file services.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's all there...If you can decipher it
The first reviewer was right on mentioning the many typos in this book.A majority of books I read have one or two here and there; a missing letter, a misspelled word, but these are mainly novels, not study guides.A misspelling or a wrong word here can make the difference between crasping a concept or completely misinterpreting the idea.

If you buy this book, you might as well throw out the "File Services" chapter. It's basically one big misprint.

If you know what you're doing, this book will work for you.If you're new to the field, I would recommend buying a more complete...a more Edited book like something from Microsoft.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slightly Worried
After using the Exam Cram book for 70-640 and passing the test I enthusiastically purchased the Exam Cram 70-642. I'm only a couple of chapters into the book right now but felt compelled to offer a comment. Did anyone proofread this book? There are typos everywhere! Sometimes, a typo will cause major confusion. "I'm sorry, did the writer just say it will ping or it won't ping?" Also, the second chapter's practice exam is MISSING AN ANSWER! No #8. I'll finish this book and do my best to fill in the details. I have 11 years of Windows networking so I'm not thrown, but if you're coming in green I would steer clear of this book for now. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelant Book
It is a very great book that helps in learning the .Net language through an easy way to practice as well

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but not "the only thing you will need"
I thought this book really helped me pass 70-305.However, it will probably not be sufficient if you are just beginning with the material or if you are using it as your sole resource.I used it with Self Test Software and I did not have any trouble with the exam. Also, as some of the other reviewers mentioned there are a few mistakes in the book especially with the chapter review questions. However, I still plan to use it to pass 306 and 310.Overall I would give this book a 7 out of 10.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment for beginners

First of all when I bought this book I was drowning in .Net books and E-Books, I was confused in where to start from, so when I found this book I told my self this is the end of the suffering..... but it seems to be is the beginning.

The book tries to cover the whole subjects required by Microsoft to pass and excel MCAD/MCSD so the book passes throw each of them but just like super sonic ...., it just like a cram no more no less, it try to cut that fat off but it cute much of the meet as well, so there is many subject that poorly covered and many other subject is covered in a way that left you in a state that you don't know what is this thing for, for example when covering ADO.Net it just pass throw it to tell you how to make connection and adapter, but it will not tell you how to add data, or even delete it, and it have not even show how to publish it in a datagrid, same thing happen in COM and assembly chapters.

Another thing it's not a wise choose for absolutely beginners, it have no concentrate on fundamentals of programming, so if you are fresh keep your hands off this book.

More over there is many typing errors, and even errors in tables and examples, so for fresh programmers that will turn the learning process into hell it self.

This book is only good to be quick reference for MCAD/MCSD, you can pass the test only with this book but take it word from me you will not excel it with it.

So what to do? If you are beginner get some easy to learn book like Deitelseries, then get the huge MS-VB.Net, but you will need this book just to know what is exactly in the exam.

Finally, THERE IS BIG CHANCE THAT YOU CAN PASS THE EXAM WITHTHIS BOOK, SO TAKE IT IF YOU ARE THAT KIND OF GUYS WHO JUST WANT TO GET THE CERTIFICATION.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Idea ... bad execution
This book was a great idea in concept but it lacks in in execution. It suffers from poor editing. The examples often lack some critical piece that would make it very difficult for a beginner to complete the excercises and have working examples.

Either the technical editor was sloppy or the proof reader/editor was a non technical person and so could not properly evaluate the logic of what was being written.

There is a published errors page on the publishers web site however the sheet only covers the first few chapters.

Its very frustrating when you are trying to learn something and the samples don't work and since you are learning you dont' know why?
I would NOT depend on this book as the only study guide for the exams.

There is a cd ,which comes with test questions, which is helpful however I'm not sure having taken one of the exams in question that the test questions prepare you for the level of difficulty of the actual exams.

Good Luck!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have study guide.
While it may be not the only study guide and resource you should read to prepare for the MCAD/MCSD exams, it is certainly a must have for your study and as a reference. Excellent book. ... Read more

Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide is part of a recommended learning path from Cisco Systems that can include simulation and hands-on training from authorized Cisco Learning Partners and self-study products from Cisco Press.Amazon.com Review
It's almost a prerequisite for employment in the data networking industry (and, if you believe the voice-over-IP people, the voice networking industry as well): The Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) proves that you know your way up and down a protocol stack, can tell a bridge from a repeater, and can configure a packet filter. It has some emphasis on Cisco Systems products, naturally, but the CCNA's scope is so broad as to be relevant no matter whose gear you use. Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide is the definitive work on the CCNA subjects and is one of the two best values among the training aids available (the other is Todd Lammle's CCNA: Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide, Deluxe Edition). This book distinguishes itself with the quality of its practice questions and lab exercises, its knowledge-assessment quizzes that help you decide how to use your study time, and its clear and numerous conceptual diagrams.

Wendell Odom, both a Cisco Certified Internetwork Engineer (CCIE) and a Cisco-rated trainer, doesn't spend too much time on test-preparation gewgaws, as do many books with CCNA in their titles. This is a reference and tutorial book through and through, and you'll use it long after you've passed the test (and you will pass the test, if you study Odom's work hard enough). He's a master at combining explanatory text (and graphics) with reference materials (like tables of commands and their modifiers). Plus, there's a CD-ROM containing exam simulations in the newly revised format. --David Wall

Topics covered: Those topics Cisco Systems expects you to understand in order to become a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) by passing exam 640-607. These include network theory, devices, protocols, and other technologies. There's an emphasis on IP addressing, routing, and security, and plenty of coverage of how to do things at the Internetwork Operating System (IOS) command line. Frame Relay and Novell IPX get covered, too. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars More of the same from Cisco
I'm sorry but this book is not a comprehensive review for the CCNA exam. It offers some material that is not included in other cisco books but that's all. This seems to be the pattern for all cisco books. Info is spread out among many sources and not summarized in any one place. Combine that with poor indexes and incomplete glossaries and you get the picture. I suspect to get a complete high-points review for the CCNA exam you will have to seek a non-cisco publications to do it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Obsolete
Don't buy this book for the CCNA exam as the test has changed. Buy the Cisco CCNA Exam #640-801 Certification Guide instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars great book, cd is trash
this review won't matter anyway since cisco retired this exam, but i think the problem with this publication may be symptomatic with other similar titles. the book itself is great. the cd however has a lot of problems with it. i am refering to the test engine. the answers are wrong, the simulations crash a regular pc, and unless you take it with a huge grain of salt, the test with wrong answers seriously makes you doubt your knowledge and shakes your self-confidence. proceed with caution!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book for the 640-607
I have been studying for the CCNA for about 2 years and have read many good books in preparation for the test. However, specific content relevant to the 640-607 is simply not included in the older books.Of course, I don't think I could have passed without the wonderful books by Todd Lammle who seems to have a knack for making impossible concepts understandable.Heather Osterloh and Anthony Chiarella are other good authors who provide relevant, practical information. And many others. But, for me, this was the book with the current, relevant information needed to pass the test. The current test will be unavailable at the end of September, so it is impossible to determine how well this information will relate to the new exam.Nonetheless, the practical, understandable material will certainly overlap all of the objectives. Thanks Wendell Odom.

3-0 out of 5 stars just ok
This book is pretty complete, but its a bit overwrought. It makes things seem more complicated than they really are and at times goes beyond the scope of the CCNA exam.As a few other reviewers already stated, its a good reference book, but not the best study guide. The Todd Lammel study guide from Sybex is better suited to preparing you for the CCNA exam in my opinion. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Info you are looking for This book VS the M$ one.
I have only read 70-210, 215, and 218 books so far from M$. As I am sure you have taken those exams already (hence, you are looking at 218), they all read like a badly written tech menu.

This book by Rory McCaw however, reads more like responds you read from tech forums - right on the spot but sometimes long-winded. I believe it definitely has enough juice to get you thru the exam, but I must agree that this doesn't give you too much in-depth.

Well, as info goes, in-depth is good, but not good when you are trying to cram all the info in your heads in 3 weeks schedule to pass your exam before the next interview. (I once remember all the UDP ports # up to the hundreds; did that help me pass my exam?) I would definitely recommend this book and read thru it casually to pass the exam, THEN refer to TechNet and the M$ book on areas you are unclear on and for reference when you are stuck on a certain problem at work or during practice.

Before my closing, I only have 1 major complain about this book. M$ baby-step you via page 1 to 1300 on their exercises, this book however, sometime assumes too much or are out in order. For example, I remember somewhere around p.150, you where asked to join another server to your main in dynamic. Well, problem is that DHCP, DDNS, and scope has not even been discussed and setup yet! (Those topic comes AFTER this exercise)

In a way, I was glad that this exercise made me realize that I know what I was doing in solving those problem, but for the person who gets frustrated easily from bad instructions (don't we all??), this book could be pretty aggravating as times.

For the ones that already got A+ Net+ Server+ out of the way like me, I wish you luck on this exam, and your first title as MCSA. I got TONS of questions on DHCP, DNS, Protocol, and connectivity issues with replicating servers (remember broadcast doesn't go thru router - REALLY easy to overlook during those exhibit pictures.

Good Luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars Very good. Occasional errors...
At first, I was a bit disapointed at the minor editorial errors and typos that I encountered and it became apparent that things were not going to improve much as I moved through the book.
I like the author. He has a very 'english' approach and his occasional use of real-life examples make the book more valuable than it should be.
My main issue with this book are the errors that were encountered. These ranged from technical details to misspellings and grammar.Sheesh! The end-of-chapter exams (multiple choice) occasionally had typos in the answers where a character would make the difference between right and wrong.
I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone new at the material, but for an intermediate who can catch things that don't seem right, it might be worth it as the author is pretty good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview
While working on my MCSE certification, I happened to select this book for the "70-218 MCSA Managing a Windows 2000 Network Environment", and I'm sure glad I did. While not an in depth reference guide, this book was more than adequate as a guide to the exam, which is its intended function. I appreciated not rehashing binary conversion, and as it turned out, there was very little binary on my exam, which I passed. I found it to be an easy read, with good examples and thought provoking review questions. I especially liked the "2-Minute Drill" included at the end of each chapter.

The included practice test did a good job of instilling the exam topics, but with a total of just 70 questions, there could have been more. Also, the Examination Score report didn't actually give you a section analysis, which would have been good for review. While there are probably better practice exams available, the one included will certainly do the job. I did like the answer guide which explains the correct answers for questions you missed, and the reference section available during the "open book" test, which explains why each answer is right or wrong, helping you to understand the logic.

If you're looking for a study guide for the 70-218 exam, I would certainly recommend "MCSA Managing a Windows 2000 Network Environment Study Guide (Exam 70-218), by Alan Simpson, Rory McCaw".

3-0 out of 5 stars Another one to get you through the exam
The book covers all the exam topics in an organised manner. Reading the book from cover to cover should be sufficient to pass the MS 70-218 exam.
I would not recommend the book for anyone looking for thorough explanation of the items covered. Too often details are missing, incomplete or even incorrect. For me, this makes the book useless as a reference for the topics included.
Sometimes the book is even frustratingly disappointing. As an example I can quote the paragraph on transforming binary to decimal numbers and vice-versa, something that you should master for some of the network related questions in the exam. Basically all the book says about it is this: "use the windows calculator in scientific mode". Sure, it will do the job, even during the exam where the calculator is available for use in all questions, however, it does not provide you with any understanding of these numbering systems.
So again, for passing the exam the book will do, if you are looking for a good reference and thorough explanation of topics covered in a precise manner, this book will not suffice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book.
This book is great and I recommend it to anyone taking the 70-218 or 70-216 tests. Although this book says it's for the 70-218, it's also very good for the 70-216 (certainly better then the last ... book I bought for that test). I only wish I had this book from the start : (
It's a relief to see the topics explained in a clear and thorough manner, without the usual useless clutter... which seems to be pretty rare with these types of books.
Good luck. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Yet another Cisco letdown
Once again Cisco has produced a very poor quality book.I have now purchased all the CCNP books produced by Cisco and this book is no different to the rest of them.Poor quality, No proof reading, mistakes everywhere, repeated paragraphs/tables and in this book in particular a real lack of detail. This book can be likened to the old Sunday night homework, very little planning, very little content and insufficient detail, by far the worst book in the course.I know from the other books in the CCNP range that the book will cover all subjects in the exam, but is that really good enough ?I for one don't think so.

Luckily Cisco networking products are not of the same quality as there books otherwise there would be no Cisco!

5-0 out of 5 stars You will use this book after the exam
I bought this book to study for the CIT exam (which I passed), but I found it a great reference to have on the shelf by my desk.It is chock full of the output of router and switch "show" commands and fully explains each screen.

It also has one of the best explainations of route caching I have read.

Well worth the money.

1-0 out of 5 stars bad book design
They took Cisco's CIT course and formatted it in book format, in some cases not even bothering to put sections together in a logical fashion. Chapter 2, for example, is a mess. They took the PowerPoint slides that cover protocol behavior and put them at the beginning and then tacked on the appendix from the course, which is essentially Cisco's Internetworking Technologies Overview. The result is that topics are covered twice in different styles.
The descriptions of the figures are wrong. Take Figure 2.3, for example. The description says that it shows ARPs in addition to the 3-way handshake. It doesn't, at least not in the edition I'm reading (1st edition)
One other comment: this is an awfully boring way to study for the exam. The book is really dry with very little added to the course notes and PowerPoint slides from the CIT class. It's also only an exam study guide. It's not like other books which addsome material for actual network administrators, not just exam takers.
One final comment: the tests at the end of the chapters are too basic and don't resemble the questions on the actual Support test in any way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent service
Book came in extremely well condition. It was packed verycarefully for shipping and arrived next day. I would definetley buy future books and also recomend others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good coverage but could be boring sometimes
I'm finally a CCNP and this test was the last exam I had to take. I would also venture to say this might very well be the most confusing exam I've taken.

On to the book, the book pretty much covered everything that's on the CCNP exam. I normally buy two books when I study for a CCNP exam but I didn't need another one for this. The only gripes I have about this book is that it was laid out in a way where it gets boring after you go through several pages of "screenshots".

Most of the book is about using show commands, and debug commands. It does very well in presenting a problem and showing you what tools you should use under what circumstance and what to look for in a debug/log. The Novell and Appletalk portion of this is an integral part of the exam and the book does have a comprehensive coverage on them. The ISDN and Frame-relay troubleshooting portion of this book is really informative and I use most of the stuff listed about it on my day-to-day job as a network engineer.

This is one of my least favorite Cisco books that I have in my possession because of its readability but, nonetheless, I would have a harder time knowing the exam as much if it wasn't for the book.

Wanna pass the exam? get it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best ever CCNA book
The Author is a wise professional writer; there is neither redundancy in this book, nor it's over summarized. in other words, you cannot miss one page and you won't get bored.. it's very concise and the auther clarifies ideas and makes it to the point just to take you to the Exam overly confident if you have already read the whole book and worked out all written labs & review questions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as Good as the Ones Before...
First of all let me say that I have used Todd's books in the past. I held CCNP and CCDP but had allowed them to expire. So I'm starting back over and having experience with Todd's books in the past I thought I'd buy this one then go take the test. I have no doubt after reading it I can pass the test. To be honest I could most likely pass it right now. I've had the book a a little over a week and am about 1/3 of the way through it. After finding yet another error, I thought I'd come here to post a review. Parts of this book are just painful to read. The grammar is so bad it hurts. Then instead of than, possesive that shouldn't be, plural that should be singular and many others. Here is an example - "...by default, there's may or may not be a password set."There are two to three errors like that per chapter and it left me wondering if anybody proof reads his work. I am guilty of making typing mistakes myself. The better I get at typing my fingers seem to have a mind of their own and I'm not aware of some of the mistakes I make as my fingers fly over the keyboard. I'm not publishing a book though. The mistakes like that make Todd appear to be well... not extremely intelligent. The subject matter itself is just ok. I guess for CCNA and an introduction it will suffice but some of it is watered down and some of it it seems that he falls shy of stating what should be stated ( I have 12 years of experience with Cisco and working as a network engineer as well as an administrator for ISP's and ASP's which leads me to make that statement ).His style is also a just a hair too relaxed: "Hey dude, don't sweat it. We'll cover that neato stuff in later chapters." If you just want to pass the test, I have no doubt this book will get you there. If you want to pass the test and be competent on the job, read this and the Cisco Press book. I was very happy with my six previous books by Todd but this one is not up to par with his work in the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive CCNA REVIEW
The book is not only a sure thing as far as covering all the material on Cisco's CCNA, but my and my fellow Network Academy class mates plan on using it as a comprehensive desk reference.

I'm very satisfied with this book this is all you need to pass the CCNA

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect!
This version of Todd's CCNA study guide is almost perfect, I've used all five. But there are small copy editor errors throughout, including those in the Virtual Lab labs. And when he says in the Tip on page 712 that if you are cramming for the Composite 640-802 exam you can skip this next section, don't do it! There are answers to 3 exam questions on the next page. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect
My book was in perfect shape! I received it in the time frame specified and in better shape than I expected. It was what I was lloking for. I would do business with you again. Thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good info for people new to Linux
The book is pretty well written overall, although the travel theme was a bit much for me personally.A lot of the information appears to be somewhat dated but I haven't taken the test yet either.

If you are new to Linux and want certification this book is worthwhile.I don't mean read the book and try and take the test.I mean read the book, practice everything in the book for at least six months in as many different settings as you can manage. The more you have to actually think about how to approach the problem the more effective you will be, on the test, and in the real world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Linux+ (expiring Oct 2010)
I found this book to be a great resource for Linux+, the exam that CompTIA is expiring in October 2010 (to be replaced by LPI's Linux certification).Pay particular attention to the Exam Tips scattered throughout the book, as they're spot-on from the test. While I used this book plus O'Reilly's LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell, I believe that you can get a passing grade on the Linux+ with this book alone, and good practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Book
This book was to the point, covered much of the objectives clearly, and is great to use as a quick reference even after you pass the test.

I held back one star, because I encountered a few questions on the test which were not covered here. This is one book I will keep on my shelf indefinitely.

- A+, Security+, & now... Linux+ ;)

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide...

The book was well organized, and followed the CompTIA Linux+ domains. Each chapter provided clear examples, and ended with a 10 question quiz to assess your knowledge. The included CDROM had 2 practice exams, with an optional 3rd exam on the publishers website.

I have only been working with Linux for about 6 months, and the book helped me score 890/900 on the exam.

Hurry though, CompTIA will be changing the exam soon! ... Read more
