3-0 out of 5 stars Oracle11g OCA & OCP
It does not have enough detail to pass the OCA or OCP by itself. You will need better testing software to do that.It does make a good building block and reference to get your certifications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
Its so didactic and very pleasant to read.

You save time reading the entire book and then doing the tests.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I am very happy. It is not another book. It's what i was looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not enough details despite large size
The book does not have enough details. It is ok if you just want to get introduced to features, otherwise I doubt if it will help people pass the exam. For most part it skims over topics without real information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great prep material
It's a good book for preparing for the OCP exams...It builds gradually as new material is introduced. With detailed and clearly presented material it's easy to get familiar with Oracle products and also pass the exams on which the book is based. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars good structure, bad contents
Buy this book. It's not good, but buy it anyway. If you want to pass the exam and not to loose too much time, it is worth the money.

Mister Alapati is already known from his book "10g New Feautres for Administrators" as someone who makes enormous number of errors. The number of errors in this book (11g) is gigantic. Not only in the text, but also in the example codes, that obviously never has run. Even in the answers of the Self test questions you see errors.

So, you don't buy this book for its contents. Without additional source of information you don't have a chance on the exam. You buy it for its structure. It covers the most of the exam topics (watch out the release 2 new features!), and it gives you an idea how you should plan your work.

And most of all... there isn't any other exam prep book on the market for 11g. Sybex doesn't publish exam preps any more, so Mr. Alapati can enjoy his monopole position.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst technical book ever.
So many have said it, but after using or trying to use this book myself, I have to concede, this is by far the worst technical book I have ever, ever read. It is absolutely loaded with mistakes. Unfortunately if you plan to upgrade then this is the only book out there to use at the moment, so if you decide to buy it you'll need to verify absolutely everything against the Oracle documentation and a 11gR1 database . This in itself might not be a bad thing, but if you're pressed for time it can be very frustrating... and who wants to pay top dollar for a book full of mistakes!

Further to this the author struggles to explain complicated subject matter and I had to refer to Oracle's documentation time and again to clarify concepts.

This proofed to be extremely frustrating. I will not buy a book from this author again.

Ps. The errata only covers a small set of mistakes and still has mistakes in it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Book
I had to read Sam Alapathi's earlier book to upgrade my Oracle Cert to 10g.This most recent book takes one to new levels of frustration. Not only is the book riddled with errors, he constantly repeats the same verbiage/points to fill up the pages to make it look like you are getting something for your money.Unfortunately not a lot of alternate books are available to cover the material so I am stuck. Can someone else write the 12g book next time who can actually compose sentences in English?

1-0 out of 5 stars What was the author thinking ?? !!!
I had read this authors (Sam Alapati) new features guide on Oracle 10g, and it had helped me a great deal with my OCP certification.
The 11g new features guide on the other hand falls short on expectations. As some previous reviewers have stated, the book can be best described as inaccurate. I was lucky to have taken the 11g new features class shortly after, where I was able to validate some of the inaccuracies in the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars This Book Did Serve Its Purpose
I found that this book did serve the purpose - Idid pass the test. There are a few typo's, but as a experienced DBA, I was able to spot them. The author did an adaquit job in covering all of the required subject matter for the test.As with any professional certification test, it is important to use many resources to prepare. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Books
Good books, well written and organized. I am preparing for my certification and hopefully will get it done soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent books. very good for oracle dba's as well as for developers.
the book is in very nice condition and very carefully delivered.

Thank you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average book for DBA certification
OCP certification from sybex book is good but it lacks the capability of highlighting important exam points. For DBA certification i would prefer oracle certification book by John Watson.
In the Sybex book all the topics are covered and the concepts are clearly explained. Since it lacks important tips and point, i am giving it 3 star rating. Oracle books by John watson has clear concepts and all the topcis are coverted with important tips and points highlighted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplemente perfecto

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is much better than the Oracle press book. Nothing more to say, and if you are already an oracle DBA, you know what I am talking. This book covers SQL in depth, and some of the commands that I wasn't even aware of. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars OCP Introduction to Oracle9i: SQL Exam Guide
Excelent OCP Introduction to Oracle9i: SQL Exam Guide for good price! I recommend you Book for OCP exams.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Oracle book ever
This is positively the worst Oracle book I have ever read, and one of the all time worst tech books I own (of over 300)
There is a *six page* Word document of known errata (I am guessing there is more)and three practice exams in the back of the book that are worthless. I would feel evil trying to re-sell this to someone on Amazon. Guess Ill hang onto it in case I ever get a bird, could use it to line the bottom of the cage with!

1-0 out of 5 stars worst oracle book
Dont buy this book. This book is full of errors. couchman contradicts himself at various places, whatever he explains could be totaly diffrent to the explainaton he gives undet test review section. If you are buying this book make sure you have another book as a reference. i am really very much surprized how come oracle has given his tag to this book. i doubt if anyone can pass oracle exam using this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Did not help me pass the certification test
I have been writing Oracle SQL for 5 years improving the efficiency of the web application our company maintains and decided to become officialy certified.I bought this book, learned some new terminology and Oracle skills.I aced the practice tests that came with the book. However, the official Oracle exam is much more difficult than the book's practice tests.I ended up buying some of Oracle's official practice tests.Of course, they may be scams as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Books
Good books, well written and organized. I am preparing for my certification and hopefully will get it done soon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Solidly mediocre
Overall, the book does a fair job of introducing you to the features, aspects and functionality of Oracle 10gR1.A word of warning: Don't take anything they say as completely true.Often the material is cut & pasted from previous incarnations of the book and, it would seem, they didn't have a third party give it a thorough reading before publication.

Case in point: When discussing the init.ora parameter DB_BLOCK_CHECKING, the text states the default is "false" except for the SYSTEM tablespace with the implication you can even turn that off.(A question at the end of the chapter reinforces this implication.)In reality, the parameter is always in effect the SYSTEM tablespace and your only choice as a DBA is whether you wish to apply it to non-SYSTEM tablespaces.

If you're looking to get certified on 10g, these books will be an OK resource and it would be in your best interest to consult other references as Oracle's tests are on only on 10gR2 now.

4-0 out of 5 stars looks like a very comprehensive test prep
I am about 1/3 through this book.I am supplementing the book with an online OCA course. So far, the book seems to provide comprehensive assistance for the OCA test.Of course, the acid test, will be the test itself. At this point, my only criticism is that the many code examples provided in the book, are apparently not available on-disk.

2-0 out of 5 stars software is too troublesome
This is a good book in many ways, but I have to subtract a star for the unacceptable hoops you have to jump thru if you want the electronic version. And even if you do install it, there are serious limits as to how you may use the material you just paid for.

Sybex is one of these outfits that feel their customers are crooks, and they never let you forget it.

Too bad, because some of their material is good. It's really tough to justify this product as a new purchase. If you can find it used, maybe then.

1-0 out of 5 stars Installation of the EBOOK
I was unable to install the ebook from the cd rom to my computer due to the permission set on it. I tried all the installation guides that was provided to no avail. it's a pain because i can't read the ebook on my computer, for this reason i'm giving ZERO RATING! because this is part of the services that i paid for, it's not convenient reading text book in the office. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Where is my book?
I really wish I could review this order but it has been 24 days and counting since I have not received this book. I don't know why it takes that long to receive a book in a major city in the US but this book is AWOL.

4-0 out of 5 stars Generally, it is a good book, but there are some errors
Oracle 10g OCA requires 1Z0-007 test from 2009. I read this book and just passed the test with the score 92.5%. In general, this is the best book you can find in amazon to prepare the exam. However, it has couple of errors, and some descriptions make me so confused. For example, an updatable view should or should not have ORDER BY clause? Sometimes, this book says the clause is forbidden, and on the other page, it is allowed. My suggestion: please digest all the pages ,all the questions of each chapter, and all the bonus exams and flash cards in CD. Do not try to omit anything if you really want to pass the exam in one shot. Basically, you need not to purchase any other mock exams or flash cards.
Good luck to your exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars ottimo libro
è arrivato un pò oltre i tempi di stima della spedizione, ma nel complesso tutto bene

2-0 out of 5 stars You won't pass the 1Z0-007 exam with just this book.
I just passed 1Z0-007 a few hours ago making 90% (47 of 52) first try. Trust me, If I ONLY studied this book, I would have failed. This book has so many mistakes that it will make you go crazy. It's completely outdated. It doesn't have the current exam objectives. The wording and content placement of this book is terrible. I should have bought the oracle 9i OCP: sql studyguide by Oracle Press.

Get the Self Test Software. It will save you a retake.

I'm studying Oracle's 10g PL/SQL book and Self Test for the next test.

I can't wait to be an OCA!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for studying
I bought this book and i am still preparing for the certification. So can't really say how useful it will be for the exam. But while reading it, i think it has a great style and really pertinent information.
I am confident this book will help me successfully complete the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent Product for OCP Oracle

3-0 out of 5 stars Failed OCP test 1 (SQL)
I was too dependent on the books to pass my OCP test and I failed my first test. What I can say is that the book goes into areas not mentioned in the test and the predominant area the test focused on...actual interpretation of SQL code, the text lacked coverage in sufficient detail. Also, if you don't know what iSQL is before the test, I'd suggest you learn what it is and how/when to use it BEFORE taking the test.

Cheers,
Stephen

2-0 out of 5 stars Better Than Nothing...
I had already begun using Oracle 10g, but had not used many of the new features before buying this book.I found this book useful in learning some of these new features, but frequently found myself flipping back and forth when contradictions appeared. Most often, there were contradictions and inaccuracies right next to each other on the same page.Even the Self-Tests had questions written wrong with respect to answers.

I found that I had to consult the Oracle documentation over and over again to figure out what was correct, and occasionally never found the right answer anyway.I almost ran out of ink correcting the mistakes in the book in the margins (Which should be made larger in future editions.)

I have bought several other better-written exam guides in the past - the Osborne 9i New features exam guide, and Sybex 8i full certification set. This 10g guide seems incredibly sloppy compared to my past experience.I am currently looking for an 11g Exam guide, and See that Sam Alapati has written that one for Osborne again.I will try to find something else if possible because I don't trust the Author or Editors of this book.

The only reason I give this book 2 stars and not 1 is that I did pass the exam.I did not feel like this book prepared me as well as it should though.

3-0 out of 5 stars I failed the exam by reading this book
Not to blame the book as the reason I failed, I realized when I went to the testing room, there are alot of items that this book doesn't cover. I recommend you read some other books for your upgrade exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is the only guide you need to pass the exam. It may not have the depth, but it covered the objectives well.

Then again, what kind of depth does one require for ASM? I've not seen it in use yet here.

4-0 out of 5 stars 10g Certification
If you are planning on taking the Oracle 10g upgrade exam this is the book I used to take the test, and I passed.A few questions on the test on nowhere to be found in the book and that could be because they are new questions or something along those lines. The practice exams are ok and may be a bit easier than the questions on the exam.I looked at some other publishers for Oracle exams and I say Sybex are the ones I am most comfortable with.I purchased this book and scheduled the exam for 6 weeks out.If I would have failed I would have blamed the book :)

As a reference book you will need additional sources as this book focuses on the Oracle exam.Good luck with the exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Typos, contradictions and poorly worded questions.
I just finished passing the test. I admit this guide helped me study for the test. The guide was well organized and covered the topics in enough depth. The writing was good. However, the typos, mispellings, contradictions, poorly worded questions and just plain bad sample questions and examples were annoying. The sample tests provided by the book were okay, but had typos and problems too. The end of chapter tests had several problems: some questions were poorly phrased or the answers contradicted the main text of the book.

I marginally recommend the guide, but you need another reference. I used the Oracle online documentation constantly to double-check the facts. My advice is buy the guide because it is well organized, but you need to be careful and double-check syntax and the facts.

3-0 out of 5 stars WARNING: Oracle changed the exam
Just wanted to warn everyone that Oracle appears to have changed this test (in the last month), only requiring a 50% to pass (down from 68%).While this may seem like a good thing, the questions are ridiculous. Not sure if they were always this way and they lowered the required score to allow more people to pass, or if they changed the questions themselves, necessitating the lowered score, but either way the sample questions in this book are barely relevant to the actual exam, if they ever were.

That said, I did pass the exam on my first try with a 73% primarily using this book and Robert Freeman's, so it does still cover the topics well enough to pass the exam.Just don't expect to "ace" this exam.As an Oracle 8,8i,9i OCP, I can say this is easily the hardest (bordering on the unfair) I've seen, but since the required score is lower, I guess it's ok.Unfortunately, I didn't know about the change while I was in the exam room sweating bullets...

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful presentation. Lots of mistakes.
I hate reading this book - boring.
Lots of mistakes in the text and in the software.
Test software is awful - multiple choice questions often have single choice controls. Sometimes duplicates of answer. Once I spoted even missed text of a question - it was just "New Question" I would never ever recommend it - buy another one - there is plenty on the market.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks depth and language geared towards experienced DBAs
This is book is geared for Oracle DBAs as the title indicates and is therefore written accordingly. It does have a few mistakes that you should be able to spot. As far as the exam is concerned, it covers most of the material on the test but don't use it as your only preparation tool because this book lacks depth. If this is your only study guide, unless you're an experienced DBA and master all the content in this book you will not pass the exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for study guide
This book is good as a study guide, but you HAVE to go more deeper with the official documentation and exercise the topics with a real database. I just passed the test and it was only because I studied the topics in much further detail. It is also based on release 1 not on current release 2. It has several mistakes but easy to discover, you have to crosscheck with the documentation. But the book is a good guide, otherwise the scope of study would be too big.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but not enough for exam!!
Its not a bad book, easy reading, good structure.Has nice CD-rom testing software.

But let me tell you..its not nearly detailed enough.I just took the OCP 9i and you need to cover way more material than is covered in this book.I'd say 50% of the exam is in this book, so that is not very good coverage.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mark's review.
The book is good, but I haven't read it all. I mean, it wasn't ripped or anything, but I thought it was hardcover. I know the website said it was softcover, but I didn't see it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for preparation to OCP 10g
This book is very well written. I've used this book as main material for preparing to 1Z0-045 exam (upgrade to 10g from 8i). All 1Z0-040 objectives are explained in this book in very clear way and what is most important each topic is followed by good real examples. All you need behind this book is 10g database and oracle documentation for deeper details. Tests covered in this book are difficult and sometimes tricky so if you have about 70% correct answers after first try you pass exam. More good about this book is that it may be used not only for preparation to the exam but also as oracle 10g reference for your real DBA job. There are very few number of errors in this book so they are marginal and maybe they are result of changes in 10g releases made after book was written (i think that those few errors were good for my own discovering of 10g features). Please note that my result of 1Z0-045 was 99%

1-0 out of 5 stars Does not cover everthing topic
I bought this book to prepare myself for the upgrade exam of OCP 9i to 10g. To my disappointment, it does not cover every topic from the exam point of view. Don't fall for the girth of the book, hoping you would find a whole lot of material in there. Its a total waste of ones money, i am pretty much sure that there would be better books available for the same upgrade exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite enough
I've used Sybex's study guides for my 9i OCP qual and found them to be ok.As a DBA working closely with 9i and 10g databases, I assumed this 10g New Features guide would round out my practical experience and help me pass this exam first time.Turns out that I was wrong. This book contains more errors than it should, is contradictory or ambiguous in places, and is not comprehensive enough to pass the exam - although you might get lucky I guess (I was short by 1 question, but luck shouldn't play a part in certification!).To be fair to the book, I also think that some of the questions in the exam itself are needlessly ambiguous and obfuscating, so I'm disappointed with Oracle too!I have copies of Sybex's DBA I and II guides, which will possibly be helpful on my resit.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book
I used it to pass my DBA OCP exam. There are a few errors in the book, but that is to be expected. You have to learn everything to be prepared for the exam. It is also wise to get a second book so you can track omissions in this books by answering all the questions and sample exams in the other book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Real OCP Test is 90% unrelated to this book
I studied this book from cover to cover with my eyes close (3 months 2-3 hours a day). I just failed the exam and I scored 60% out of 70% passing. Although the book covers all the materials you have to know, it does not cover in detail on each section to pass. The test questions are totally unrelated to the practice exam of this book. Almost all the questions are scenario questions. I suggest that you need additional references beside this book.

Furthermore, this book is hard to understand. I have re-read so many times. The wording is poor. There are about 20% mistakes on the practice exam questions of this book. The reason I did not add additional references is that if you study the book from cover to cover, there is no doubt you passthe exam---I WAS WRONG.

WARNING: The OCP exam had 2-4 long sentences each question with a multiple choice from A-F (2-3 answers). That's how it makes it hard. You have to think very very very deep and NOT ENOUGH TIME.

4-0 out of 5 stars better than admin I (OCA) book
i have passed my ocp 10g exam last month, thanks to this book and bersinic & watson book (ocp all in one exam guide). i have to say overall this book is better than the admin I book also by sybex. the thing i like about this book is it covers more than the exam needs, e.g. how to create the rman recovery catalog, which is not found in other ocp preparation materials (including oracle's student guide for admin II training). i also find the flashcards helpful (also available in sybex oca), and the two bonus exams. but just be very careful when assessing the answers to all the questions, there is a few misleading answers i found, although it is very rare. the best way to find the right answer is to test the question on a practice database, or find the exact answer from Oracle's documentation. i would still say it is a good and pretty complete reference for your OCP 10g exam.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough to pass the test
This book is jam-packed with info that the Oracle 10g DBA will need to know...unfortunately, its not enough to pass the exam. The book isn't necessarily at fault - the exam is full of so many trick questions and obscure references that cooincidentally are all spelled out in Oracle's training material (which you'll need to shell out three thousand dollars to attend the class and get the books).
In order to get OCP certified, you have to attend an Oracle class anyway, so skip this book and get the training from the source.

3-0 out of 5 stars Proof-reading needed
This book apparently underwent no proof-reading. Careless and obvious mistakes abound. The publisher's errata page is of little use although the book has been published for nearly two years. Considering that this is a book you rely on to pass an exam, this is close to irresponsible.

I've only read half of the book, I hope the remaining is better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very complete coverage
I just passed my Oracle 1Z0-043 test after using this book as my sole study source, in addition to an Oracle installation I set up at home. The book does a great job of covering all the material I encountered on the test. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars this book helps, but does not guarantee you to pass
Well, well, I just came back from the testing center. Fortunately, I passed, but the score is very tentative.
I am not a DBA. I have very little experience in administrating oracle database. The only purpose I learned OCA exam is because I think this is the best way to obtain the key skills.

During the past 3 months, I am sure I totally digested this book. But finally I found this book is far from enough to pass the test. I ordered the "self test" and found I can only pass 50% in the mock tests. Does the"self test" over kill?
After taking the real exam, I found the difficulty of the real test is between the self tests and the book. If you only read this book and you do not have so much practical experience, I am sure you can not pass. I have the feeling, the knowledge in the book is too out-of-date. However, I really had not any better books to read for the test.

Good luck guys.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text, Companion questions are so-so
Having passed the OCA, I can say that this book has excellent coverage of the OCA exam (and presumably the OCP too). I wouldn't bother buying any other study material for reading. The book is very comprehensive, and the topics are broken down into small digestible chapters. If you're wondering what book you should buy to read, buy THIS ONE.

My only complaints are that the question cd is not particularly helpful. The questions on it aren't particularly close to the actual exam. I would very much recommend that you buy a question set from a provider on the internet such as Ucertify (just be careful which provider you buy from, as some of them provide the *exact* test questions, which will invalidate your results. Ucertify is ok.)

Also be careful: The last chapter in section 1 (the section on languages and such) is in the OCP exam, not the OCA.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exams are swapped on the companion CD
This book will prepare you for the OCA/OCP exams, however, be aware before you start, the self-test software has the exams mismatched. The OCA exam is actually titled "OCP" and vice-versa, so if you cover the 1st half of the book, you'll need to take the "OCP" test on the software, the one with 75 questions.

1) Read each chapter
2) Take every quiz at the end of chapter
3) Score yourself and review each wrong answer

By the time you are done and are ready for the practice test, you will be prepared.

I do feel that there are a few too many errors, as other reviewers pointed out, but most of these will only hurt people who are just trying to "cram." For experienced DBAs, the errors will usually be obvious, and can be verified by doing the exercises. That said, errors are errors and should not be there if the book had been properly edited and reviewed.

The self-test software gets 2 stars. It feels like it was tossed together in 20 minutes from an import of a tab delimited list of questions and answers. The references for each question in the view section just refer you to the book, as a whole, no chapter number! Ridiculous. Scrolling the test review does not work, neither does the print function!

If I were the author of certification guides I would guarantee with the utmost certainty that the book was accurate and helpful, by having several non-certified DBAs as _well_ as OCP DBAs review and take the chapter tests.

Besides all that, I still give it 4 stars it is well presented, and if this book does not prepare you, then you are probably not doing the self-tests and exercises, and are looking for a cheat-sheet cliff-note format, and I don't want to hire any DBA that needs to be spoon fed to pass a certification.

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic info for 10g R1
This book has basic info for 10g R1 however exam questions based on knowledge of 10gR2 knowledge of ASM being one of them. Don't expect to pass using just this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book but look out for errors!
i've found book quite interesting and what the most important "thinking-oriented" and helpfull to PASS the OCP exam.
but i found a lot of errors in text, some that are just obsolete informations like env variable EMHOSTNAME, which may be fine in 10.1 but in 10.2 you have to use ORACLE_HOSTNAME instead,
some others are typographic errors like calling column resource_manager_group but it should be resource_consumer_group (p855), forgetting to list BYDAY in interval specifiers (p866).
But the other things are really unpleasent surprises:
"maximum number is limited by the JOB_QUEUE_PROCESSES instance parameter; this defaults to 0, but if that value is used, the Scheduler will not function" -- not true -- see art. no 413399.1 and own practice as well.
q7 in questions about scheduler: B)freq=hourly;interval=1/2 -- i got error ORA-27465: invalid value freq=hourly;interval=1/2 for attribute REPEAT_INTERVAL which was expected -- according to documentation so this is not proper anwser.
on page 574 "Image copies can be made of datafiles, the controlfile, and archive logs. Image copies cannot be made of the spfile"
-- but during copy of controlfile we have:

RMAN> backup as copy current controlfile;

Starting backup at 06-SEP-08
using target database control file instead of recovery catalog
allocated channel: ORA_DISK_1
channel ORA_DISK_1: sid=153 devtype=DISK
channel ORA_DISK_1: starting datafile copy
copying current control file
output filename=/u01/oracle/flash_recovery_area/ORCL/controlfile/o1_mf_TAG20080906T201002_4d5kvv6v_.ctl tag=TAG20080906T201002 recid=5 stamp=664747803
channel ORA_DISK_1: datafile copy complete, elapsed time: 00:00:01
Finished backup at 06-SEP-08

Starting Control File and SPFILE Autobackup at 06-SEP-08
piece handle=/u01/oracle/backup/cfc-1177494707-20080906-00 comment=NONE
Finished Control File and SPFILE Autobackup at 06-SEP-08

so it seems to be not true too.

And the information which was the most surprising to me:
tip on page 796 "The views V$ASM_DISK and V$ASM_DISKGROUP are only
populated in an ASM instance. They are always empty in an RDBMS instance".
but oracle doc says: "In a database instance, V$ASM_DISKGROUP displays one row for every Automatic Storage Management disk group mounted by the local Automatic Storage Management instance".
And talking about ASM one more important thing: there is no information about templates and aliases in ASM file names which one could get on exam test!
that's not the complete list of errors i'm afraid.
and it's worth to notice that from december '08 the contents of the book won't be enough to getOCA/OCP:
http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=231.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will help you pass, but it won't be easy....
Don't kid yourself. The 1Z0-031 is not an easy test, but reading this book helped me pass the test. If you are new to the profession, like me, then this book alone will not be enough.

I read this book once, understood MOST of what I read and then tried the test and failed. I then took an Oracle DBA class at a Community College and read two other books titled "Oracle 8i DBA Bible" and "Oracle 9i DBA Handbook". I also read Biju Thomas' book one more time, fully understood it and then I was able to pass the test.

I highly recommend this book. I feel that if you can read and understand 99-100% of what Biju Thomas writes in "OCA/OCP: Oracle 9i DBA Fundamentals I" then you can pass the Oracle Exam. I also would not attempt the Exam without reading this book at least once.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for certification and great for on the job Reference!
My objective in going to the exam was to learn the basics of database and passing the exam was secondary ( i have a fairly well settled job where certification does not matter much).Anyway, No review on certification books is complete without giving a background of your experiences on the subject :

MY DBA EXPERIENCE :
My experiences onOracle DBA fundamentals is practically and theoretically zero. I have already passed the Introduction to Oracle9i SQL exam which is a pre-requisite to get certified. You can be a master in SQL skills and still be a novice in DBA Fundamentals. Frankly I DID NOTknow the following :

1. Physical structure of database is composed of controlfiles, datafiles and log files
2. Never knew that most developers and DBA's spend the time on logical structures which aretables, tablespace etc and do not physically exist in the database
3. Had never heard of V$views
4. I was aware of tables, tablespaces ,DDL commands etc
5. I am an application developer and bulk of my interaction with oracle was select statements, update statements etc
6. Was aware of different types of indexes and that is an important topic in both SQL fundamentals exam and DBA fundamentals exam

If you can answer to all of the above criteria's with a confident 'yes', you are most likely a DBA already and just want to get urself a pay raise by getting certified..Yes, this book will help to breeze thro ( i read about someone who got the exam passed by studying the book for 40 hours). For newbies like me, it is not that easy..in fact it is doubly difficult over intro to sql exams because, i lacked the practical experience ( try inactivaing a tablespace from your company database).

STUDY EFFORT : This book goes through every topic in detail, but sorely misses the visual explanation that would have made some topics easy ( example ...shutting down an instance and startup). This is the reason why i am not giving 5 stars to the book. Neverthless every topic was well described. some of the topics are little elaborate eating into our valuable study time. I studied the book totally 4 times , since after every reading ,tried doing the question paper and slowly removed the errors in understanding. It took a whopping 6 months for me ( and my friend) to learn as you earn. With little more effort, probably i could have got certified in 4 months

I used the book tests and Best of all, my friend who also passed the exams sent me a question paper ( that be purchased in ebay) based on Jason Couchman's bookTook that exam( about 150 questions)..and everytime went back to the book reading the chapters and sections where i got it wrong . As a matter of fact, the question paper from jason was very very closely aligned with the questions i got in the exam.

EXAM : Passed the exam .scored 49 correct ( required 44). there was not one question on syntaxes . i assume the oracle examiners have decided it is too easy to find syntaxes on the internet and were focusing on understanding of the subject ( ex : steps taken to multiplex a control file)
If passing the exam is primary for u..don't miss the simulation exams of Jason Couchman ( of course u need to study )..but if u want to learn every aspect ofDBA Fundamentals, use this book. On the job, this book is a great resource ( according to a junior DBA in our team). Well written book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good test preperation
To pass those Oracle Exams is hard for a newbie anyways because the hand on experience is missing. I am one of these candidates but I have to say that this book is very helpful to get ready for the test. 95% of the topics needed for the exam are completely in this book and explained in a good understandable way. For the other 5% I have used the original Oracle training documents. After you have passed the exam this book is an awesome reference because topics are divided in a very usefully way and all topics have examples of the SQL commands and dictionary views.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
I used this book and ILT Oracle's manual for my preparation.
Most of the objectives are covered in the book, I like the way in which information is being presented, the only problem I found is some chapters miss important information such as names of dictionary views, which are clever to exam.

NLS is barely covered and not all views are shown.
The tables chapter enforced too much about types of segments, I spent too much time looking into creating partioned tables which is not part of exam objectives.

The Undo chapter misses information on how to check for PENDING DELETE rollback segments.

Follow Exam Objectives when using this book, so you won't waste time memorizing stuff you don't need.
Good Luck

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful. Passed first time.
I purchased this book and downloaded Oracle 9i from the Oracle web site. I spent less than 40 hours reading the book, doing the practice questions and playing around with Oracle and I passed the exam with a 47/60. It's not the greatest of passing margins but considering I haven't had any prior experience or training with Oracle (I have had one year of experience with MS SQL Server 2000) and it took less than 40 hours of my time to prepare for it, I would say the book did its job well. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Very basic.
This book is an Introduction to SQL level book. If you know SQL a little bit, you will get very little out of this book. The chapters don't go into detail and the questions seem to be dumbed down - they don't look like realistic certification exam questions. Although it is not a certification book, if you would like to learn Oracle SQL I recommend Oracle SQL by Example (by Alice Rischert). This is one of the best book on Oracle SQL and you will learn a lot from it - not just superficial certification SQL.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair Study Guide for Exam, Lacking Depth
I purchased this book in preparation for the Oracle Database 11g SQL Fundamentals 1 Exam. While the breadth of the material is good as it covers every topic on the exam, the presented examples are extremely simplified and often present a concept in its most basic form.In addition, the exercise questions at the end of each chapter are much too simplified.I downloaded a practice exam from Transcender and was amazed at the difference in complexity between the questions and exams provided by the book and those from Transcender. If you are taking the exam, the questions in the book as well as the exams will not fully prepare you for the exam.I highly recommend purchasing additional practice exams from Transcender; they have the look and feel of actual Oracle exam questions.I did find the study text in this book extremely useful and would recommend it in conjunction with some other study aid.

1-0 out of 5 stars Riddled with errors, sample questionstoo simple
This book is almost useless. Namely, it is riddled with errors, doesn't cover all the exam topics, examples are way to easy in comparison with the actual test and the 2 sample tests are easy too.
I just took the online exam and passed. However:
- most of the questions were about complex SQL statements, mostly joins and subqueries
- the online test has a serious problem: namely, the question and the proposed answers are displayed in one tab
and the table structures and tabel data are displayed in a second tab. Now the catch: the tabs can't be viewed simultaneously. This is a major problem since you have to switch back and forth between the tabs and you forget either the exhibit or the question and the given answers.

I easily scored over 95% on the practice tests (from this book and other sample tests) and barely got 75% on the real test. On a final note, I do have several years of hands-on SQL experience.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is nice book
This is nice book . I was looking for a book that specifically contained info on SQL*Plus syntax and a bit of SQL.
The books does cover some SQL and it does cover SQL*Plus, but it never goes into any real depth on either topics. I love real world examples that I can actually refer back to and use on the job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is an excellent book for passing 1Z0-051 exam. It covers all topics with good explanations and exercises to practice your understanding. It is also a good SQL reference. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Topic well-covered
Thanks to the author. I used this book for my last exam along with the oracle press book. The topic on the exam is completly covered but not according to checklist designed by oracle. But you can still find your way out. I have to admit that the book is really good I like it. It has sufficient details that help a lot. The practice exams questions are also really good. But there is one small mistake that I noticed is the answer to one question related to the alert log file in Unix environment (sometimes the answer is alert_sid.ora and sometimes it is alert_sid.log).
Finally to candidates for the exam, expect to see a lot of questions on the views (performance & data dictionary), latch contentions, initialization parameters, IOT, and Index...

4-0 out of 5 stars A good preparation tool
My purpose was to pass the exam and I have done it using this book but also the Osborne book by Ch. Pack.
Both of them are very good books and are complementary.

Pros:
- A lot of examples: extracts from statspack reports, screenshots of Oracle Enterprise Manager tools. It's very interesting to understand but it's no use for the exam.
- The exam-based questions are challenging.
- Nearly all you need to know can be found in this book

Cons:
- This book doesn't follow Oracle test content checklist. It's all mixed up but there is a good plan table.
- Some chapter are too much detailed, too many parametersfor Oracle utilities (eg TKPROF). It's sometime difficult to see what's important to know for the exam. I only had basic questions about those tools nothing about all the options described in the book.
- They are small mistakes: CREATE_STORED_OUTLINES, USE_PRIVATE_OUTLINES and USE_PRIVATE_OUTLINES are stated as initialization parameters but it's not the case (check otn.oracle.com).

My advice:
- have a good understanding of Oracle views. I had between 10 and 15 questions relating to views.
- use both books to be well prepared. This exam is quite difficult.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sybex not as good as Oracle Press book
I bought the Sybex Performance Tuning book. A colleague of mine bought the Oracle Press book. I read both and passed the OCP exam with plenty to spare. While the Sybex book is good, the Oracle Press book is better. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Mildly bad!!!!
I read this book cover to cover..twice!!! The authors did a terrible job explaining the Architectural Components in depth. For any novice or beginner, how would you expect to get a grasp on storage structures(tablespaces, indexes, blocks) if you're getting a half ass instruction on what the main key components are? Their explaination of the buffer cache was no more that 10 lines of text. Nothing mentioned about the different structures within that cache. And the same goes for the other components.

And as the other reviewer indicated, its terribly organized. The index in the book is a total joke.

I think this is a great book for beginners who want to have a "general" understanding of Oracle, but if you want to conceptually understand the material and not blow $125, don't purchase this book.
Get Sybex. Its does exactly opposite of what this book does. It Covers just about everthing you need to understand as a junior dba and test taker.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average book for OCP Fundamentals II
This book does not cover all the details for Fundamentals II. It is a good source for reference. The CD accompanied with the book has wrong answers for the questions. You may need to refer additional book(s), may be sybex one along with this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent OCP book
I used this book to prepare for my Exam 1z0-031 but not as main reference. I used it to supplement the Sybex Study guide. It has some errors but I would say it is a decent book to use as preparation tool. I liked the practice exam questions. I did not have to buy any sotware for my practice exam questions. Those already in this book helped me.
I give 3 stars and I will definitely recommend this book as supplement to the Sybex study guide if you are preparing for OCP exam Exam 1z0-031.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oracle should rewrite this book
I used this Oracle Press book, the Sybex book, and the Self Test Software prep questions to pass the Oracle Fundamentals I exam.

This book has received justifiable bad press.I bought it anyway, as I did not want to risk missing any material that might be presented in the "official" Oracle exam guide.I'm sure you'll buy it for the same reason.

The Oracle Press book was difficult to read. The issues go beyond spelling errors and the many "Oracle 8I" references that should say "Oracle 9i".I can correct these errors myself. This book has serious editing issues that will impact your ability to understand the concepts presented. The author knows his stuff but the editor really dropped the ball.Oracle should take pity on certified hopefuls and rewrite it.

However, not all is lost. You can avoid getting mired down in Oracle's presentation by printing the exam objectives from the Oracle web site and focus your studies around this outline.Consider buying the Sybex book as an added guide.Pull details from both books using your exam ojective outline. The only exam objective I found to be missing from the Oracle Press book was on NLS.NLS is covered in the Sybex book.

Good luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars Blows
This book blows.I read to book cover to cover and it misses alot of the key concepts covered on the exam.It dosen't go into enough detail in areas that need to be and goes into to much detail into subject such as utilities such as OEM.I don't even remember the book covering NLS topics.I suggest ordering a different prep book for this exam and buying STS software. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Guide
This book was very good and helped me pass the 1Z0-001 exam with a score of 54/57 (95%).All topics on the exam are covered by this book, and the CD comes with some good practice exams that are similar (although a little easier) to the actual exam questions.I would recommend this to anyone taking the 1Z0-001 exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I used this book for the 1Z0-007 Exam and I passed with a score of 48/52 !!. It includes almost all the chapters.
You just need to study the new oracle 9i features.
Great book !!

Thanks a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Exam Prep Tool
I used this book for the Exam 1z0-001. It is well-written and easy to understand. The book covers all the topics tested on the test. I even had some questions similar to some in the book. I took the exam on March 29, 2004 and I passed it. I will recommend this book to OCP candidates and even to someone new to oracle. Well! I already recommended that to some people who bought it. I also used as supplement the Oracle Press book written by Jason Couchman. The main goal is not to cram but understand the material.

I give 4 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for IZ-001
This seems to be the best book out there for IZ0-001.For the most part this book is great, however certain topics like LOCKS, PRIVILIGES and VIEWS are covered at a very high level of abstraction.I would recommend oracle manual for these topics.Aditionally the book does cover pair-wise comparison but does not explicitly use this term. Please be sure to familiarize urself with pair-wise comparison. From what i have been told IZ0-001almost always has a question on pair-wise comparison and i sure did have one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Study Guide
There are some small errors, but the book has good examples and covers most of the exam topics. It's easy to read and well organized. Since there aren't so many OCP study guides, you should give it a try.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy it for the CD
I felt this book had the best exams and chapter review questions.

Nonethless I recommend you read all the OCP books out there, and take all the sample exams you can get you hands on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent OCP 'starter'.
This book gives an excellent summary of the OCP-required knowledge base. I read it, and then read the Coriolis Exam Crams and Oracle Performance Tuning (Gurry, Corrigan). My only (minor) criticisms are the confusingPL/SQL section and the lightweight treatment of Tuning. Overall though, avery worthwhile purchase.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well written but out out sync with exam.
The book is well written and provides the student with good working knowledge of Oracle 7/8. But the materials seem to be slightly out of sync with the exams. Some subject areas are covered in greater detail thannecessary for the exam. A few of the exam question topics were not coveredin the Training Guide. The book's review questions do not properly preparethe student for the complex type of questions on the exam.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacking the meat
This book has good organization; yet lacks the delivery of the goods. Touches on the subjects briefly; sometimes confuses the issues completely and shrouds things in more mystery than necesarry. The test questions areriddled with mistakes. Obviously whoever wrote them did not read it or anyother reference materials. In short, need more and better meat than this topass. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars In this set 3 books out of 4 are good
It is worth buying this set to use for the Oracle 9i track OCP exams.

*OCA/OCP: Introduction to Oracle9i SQL Study Guide (1Z0-007)
Good book, it covers pretty much all the exam objectives. It is easy to read and easy to follow. But I prefer the sybex study for the exam (1Z0-001) which is an alternative to the exam (1Z0-007). Overall I give 5 stars for this book within the whole set.

* OCA/OCP: Oracle9i DBA Fundamentals I Study Guide (1Z0-031)
Very good! The content of the book is well-aligned with the exam objectives. It is easy to read and easy to follow. Can even be used as reference. I also give 5 stars for this book within the whole set.

* OCP: Oracle9i DBA Fundamentals II Study Guide (1Z0-032)
The only bad apple in the basket. This book does not account for all the exam objectvies outlined by the Oracle Certification Program. The book does covers some of the topics tested on the exam but not in depth to make you feel comfortable. I admit I gained some knowledge out of this. Overall it is not a complete guide. I rate 3 stars within the whole set.

* OCP: Oracle9i Performance Tuning Study Guide (1Z0-033)
Best book! Complete coverage of the exam objectives. The coverage is good and clear with many screenshots of codes. The only problem with this book is it does not follow the format of exam objectives. But you can still find your way out. Overall, I recommend it. I give 5 stars within the whole set.

Finally, my suggestion is this: to maximize your chance and master the topic, try to get also the Oracle Press books. If you couple the Oracle Press books and the Sybex Study guide, you don't need the expensive practice test software. You will have plenty of questions you will increase your chance of passing the first time.

4-0 out of 5 stars oracle9i review 01
The book is found very useful. The structure and scope is easily agreeable to the exam syllabus.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not good as a boxed set - checkout 007219524X instead
While the first two volumes covered the testing material fairly well, the last two volumes (Fundamentals II & Performance Tuning) compare very poorly to their counterparts published by Oracle Press.I have bought other Sybex study guides, and they have been nothing but good to me.This "kit" comes up a little short. If you must absolutely buy a boxed set for the cost savings, I would recommend Oracle Press's set ISBN 007219524X also available at Amazon.

In the book for Fundamentals II, the coverage of networking, Shared Server and imp/exp is VERY sparse. While the sections onBackups is better, the Oracle Press books were a little more on target in presenting concepts for the exam.

The Oracle Press book for Performance Tuning was a much better choice not only for the exam, but also works as a great reference at my desk.Again, the material and its presentation was more complete and representative of the concepts tested on the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best OCP
This is definitely the best oracle 9i book in the market.
However, you must use it with the Simulate Exam question.
Otherwise, I think is impossble to pass.

I thinkocpfree/ocpfree1/ocpfree2/ocpfreeX in yahoogroup.com has provide a valuable Exam Simulation all for free.
No need to buy the simulate test. This book + yahoogroups + Study will gurantee you pass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really good study guide
Hi,

The content and the style is really comprehensive and easy to understand. The best part is the closeness to the actual exam.

There are so many books to learn about Oracle but by using this book and exam sim from whizlabs, I could easily cracked the exam.

I'll highly recommed it.

Best wishes,
