5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Exam Guide
I used this book to study for the exam. The explanations on this book is very good. The only fault on this book is the level of the questions. The questions on this book are very weak compared with the real exam. So, keep in mind that to think to take the exam, you will need to have a score upper than90% on the test of the book, to have a chance to pass on the real exam. I bought the SelfTest too and there is the same problem with the questions. But, the key is: you need to understand the concepts behind the questions. If you understand that, you will not have problems to pass on the exam.

I had take the test last week and a I pass on the exam with 82% score. To study I use this book and the Self Test Software.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Exam Guide
I used this book to study for the Performance Tuning Exam. This book covers all the objectives of the exam in much more organized way. The chapters reflect the contents of the checklist designed by oracle. Study the chapters carefully before taking the practice exams. Concerning the practices exam itself, it has some mistakes. Some of the answers to the questions are wrong but if you understand the material you will notice those mistakes. Or if you want to clear any doubt you can also check the oracle online manual.
On the exam, expect a lot of questions concerning the views, latch contentions, and some initializations parameters.
My suggestion to you is if you want to maximize your chance you can buy the sybex study guide which is also good. Both books are good for the exam except that I found the Oracle press book more organized. I will definitely recommend them if you are planning to take the performance tuning exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book - Could have done better
Read this book - took the Beta exam failed by 6 wrong answers. Second attempt passed - thanks now an OCP Certified. The explanations are good. Need more explanation, the new feature and their effectiveness on the 9i with respect to performance tuning. This would have helped use this book for standard reference for performance tuning 9i.I don't like to keep lot of books around. Now I have to get rid of this and get a book for 9i tuning reference purposes.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good preparation tool
My purpose was to pass the exam and I have done it using this book but also the Sybex book by J. Johnson.
Both of them are very good books and are complementary.

Pros:
- very well structured and very clear
- the exam-based questions are representative
- the level ofdetail for package procedures is good

Cons:
- some answers to exam questions I had can't be found in the book
- there are typing mistakes in capital letters commands

My advice:
- have a good understanding of Oracle views. I had between 10 and 15 questions relating to views.
- use both books to be well prepared. This exam is quite difficult.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oracle Press better than Sybex for Performance Tuning
I bought the Sybex book. One of my colleagues bought this Oracle Press book. I read both and passed the test with plenty to spare. For the Oracle9i Performance Tuning Exam, I strongly recommend Oracle Press over Sybex. If you are buying just one, get the Oracle Press book. In particular, the Oracle Press sample tests and CD-ROM tests are much closer to the actual exam than Sybex. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not in-depth enough
The real exam questions were more difficult than what this book prepares you for.Buggy software on the CD Rom.Use this book only as a study outline.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Exam Guide
I used this book for my exam (1z0-032). It is a good book, well-organized and detailed. It is far better than the sybex book that I used as supplement. The contents of the oraclepressbook are very closed to the Exam questions. The practice exams on the CD were very helpfull especially those questions related to recovery scenarios. I would recommend this book to candidates taking the OCP. But my advice would be to use the oracle online documentation to clear some doubts you might have or get moreinformation. Very often, the oracle online documentation provides you the best expalanation. This exam is really challenging with a lot things to know. You will probably have different recovery scenarios questions.I will also advise you to spend time on the Oracle Networking part to master the concepts correctly before taking the exam.
I will finish by thanking Rama Velpuri for the great job he did putting this Exam Guide together. Other than a bug in the software the guide deserves 4 stars from me.
Thanks R. Velpuri

4-0 out of 5 stars One of a few needed books
Other than the typo's and minor errors, the book was a better than average aide to passing the associated exam. For those topics it covered on the OCP exam, it provided sufficient depth. However, there were certain nuances on the exam that weren't covered in any of the two books I used to prepare. The tests on the cd-rom were a good tool to prepare.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good preparation tool
I have just passed the exam using this book as the main reference.

On the 73 questions (63 were scored), the answers to 3-4 questions were not in the book.

I am not a network specialist but I found the first part of the book (Oracle Networking) unclear. I had to read quite a lot from other sources (books, Oracle online documentation) just to understand.

On the other hand, I found the Backup and Recovery part very clear. Just what you need to know to pass the exam.

1-0 out of 5 stars Has to be better
The text could be more thorough, it just seems to leave me needing to ask questions. Could be better if it had a glossary.
The organization is poor, as the topics are presenting in misleading ways where the context it applies is presented in an offhand way.

Test questions too easy.

I am going to need to find another book which covers the material before I dare take the test. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for a brush-up, kind
You're not going to get certified with this book, but the CD is pretty good at testing your Backup and Recovery knowledge. The CD also quizzes you on Recovery Manager (RMAN), parameter files, Import, Export, SQL Loader and Listener Control utility. Everyone here is accurate; that Oracle DBA II test is very difficult to pass with this book alone, but any practice test helps.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
If you use only this book, you will not pass the exam. The practice exams include topics that are not covered anywhere in the book. The level of detail provided by both the exams and the content is not sufficient to pass the real exam.I scored 95% - 100% consistently on all exams in this book including the 3 bonus exams on the cdrom and still did not pass the real exam.I found that the real exam covered several topics that either were not covered at all in this book or did not provide the level of detail or understanding necessary to pass the exam.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does not meet the Exam objectives
I used this book as supplement and the oracle press book (R. Velpuri) as main reference. This book published by sybex does not account for all the objectives covered in the exam (1z0-032). The books covers some of the topics but not into details. I read the whole book twice and gained some knowledge out of it but I believe it is not a complete study guide for preparing for the exam. I also used the practice exam questions on the CD.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lite on the subject matter
Having used the previous two study guides in the set for Oracle 9i DBA OCP, I found the third book (this one) to be missing the depth the first two had.I've been using Oracle's online documentation to supplement my study. This book gave me a good overview for starting, but the authors seem to pick a few examples for mostly illustrative purposes, and the questions just didn't do the subject material justice.I expect more from a study guide than just that.Organization could be better too.(Same goes for Oracle's docs.)There are so many convoluted ways to backup/restore/recover that a study guide needs to bring it all together in a concise summary.Of course that's a good exercise left to the student, along with the some hands-on stuff, which I need to get back to.I just wish I had a study guide that made better sense of it all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough to pass the exam
I passed the exam and used this book during my study but fortunately not only this book.

Pros
- The book is clear and quite pleasant to read
- You certainly need to know what's in this book to pass the exam

Cons
- All subjects in the test list are covered but not in depth
- During this Oracle certification exam, you will have basic questions about backup/recovery and Oracle networks concepts. You will certainly be able to answer these questions if you have a good understanding of the content of this book. On the other hand, you will also have "mastery" questions which required an in depth knowledge of the subject (mainly of commands). The answer to these questions is simply not in this book. Approximatively 1 question out of 3 are concerned which in my opinion is too much. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It does the magic
I decided to do my DBA certification on sep 1'st 2004 and I bought this book as my preparation material. The DBA certification track has 5 exams and as of now ( 6'th Nov 2004) I have passed 4 exams , the last one in due in a weeks time. The book is an excellent source for getting certified . I didn't score great in all my exams, but I wouldn't blame the book, its because I took 4 exams in about a month , if you prapare at a more genuine pace I am sure you can score well.

The only flaw I could find was the book on backup and recovery I felt lot of information was redundant and there were pages and pages of data showing the screen shots on executing the recovery and backup commands ( probably included for better understanding) didn't help me much though. Hey but I can't complain I got through the exam .

I am happy I bought the book, the authors did a great job. Do make it a point to do all sample tests on the cd, It really helps. If you are in a hurry to get certified this is the the best source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great study books for Oracle 8i OCP exams!
I used the Sybex books to study for the PL/SQL and Performance tuning exams.Like another reviewer, I found that the CD for Performance Tuning did not work - it only pointed to one exam, but with a little hacking effort, I was able to look at the code for the exam questions. However, not having a working CD was a pain when I was in exam cram mode! The subject matter for both PL/SQL and Performance Tuning is broken into logical units & the questions after each chapter are helpful study guides.I like this series much better than Couchman's book or the Exam Cram series.I took all my exams in a 2 month time frame & passed each exam the 1st time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Preparation Material
I have no hands on experience, however I try to take the test using this book. I decide to buy this book after I read all the reviewers comments. So these books by far are the most excellent reading material I have ever read. Forget Oracle Press, especially Jason S Couchman books... <- Good for further material but very bad for test.

1. For PL/SQL, is very good indeed, I only got 3 wrong answers for the test
2. For Architecture & Administration, Wonderful I got 3 wrong answers for the test

3. For Performance Tuning, Best, wonderful, excellent... etc I have ZERO wrong answers for the test
4. Backup & Recover, u ummm... I use exam cram's book as some reviewers recommend (5 wrong answers)
5. Network Administration, I haven't take the test but I plan to use exam cram's book as some reviewers recommend

Together along with selftest preparation software, you should pass the tests along, believe me, I'm a living proof for 4 test at least hahahaha..... I'd also like to express my gratitude to SYBEX for these wonderful books. Also thanks for other good reviewers. So good luck every one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
There will atleast one dream to everyone in this world,i do have few,One of these is OCP.I should thank Author(s) and publisherse and all who behind this greatest books.I am suggesting each and every one to go for these books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lived up to my hopes
I have 4 years of programming and 2 years of DBA experience. Other than doing the DBAI course everything I know is from on the job or from books. I just finished the first OCP exam (SQL PL/SQL). I passed it with a lot of room to spare.

There were quite a few things that I learned from the book, since in the course of work one tends to focus on the job at hand, and not try to learn everything at once.

The exam was much easier than I expected. I felt very well prepared.

Although there are some mistakes in the book, they are easily discovered if you practice the examples while sitting at the computer.

I hope that the rest of the material is up to par and that I'll be as well prepared for the other OCP exams. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Corrections please!
I have found numerous incorrect statements, explanations and answers for the practice tests. This product was released in May 2001 and as of yet Sybex has no errata or corrections available for download on their website.

Since this is a test prep CD it's imperative the information it provides be 100% correct!Errors can be expected when something of this nature is first released but their failure to provide corrections is inexcusable!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best product
I used the cd only for the first exam so far, but I have to say that I'm not very pleased with it. Not many questions about PL/SQL and lots about group functions. Further on it would have been nice to get some question numbers, so you can see where you are concerning the timing.
Overall, not a success.

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
This product helped me passed the exams. It has 200 questions for each exam. I did the questions in the timed mode in the week before the real thing. The questions are a little bit harder than in the exams, which makes you feel comfortable during the real thing. And it helpes you to understand the concepts well and to realize what you are weak at. It also has some scenario questions, which is what Oracle is adding to its exams.
One thing about it is that the questions are not numbered. When you are doing the questios, especially in a timed mode, you may feel lost about how far you are from the end.
Overall, it is phenomenal. I recommend it to all who want to go to the exam confidently.

1-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating to use
The software contains 1000 test questions 500 per certification exam.I was thinking this would be great I can create the random tests with 20 or so questions each time. When you create a random test it gives you most of the same questions each time. Also, some of the syntax on the questions is questionable. I am severely disappointed with this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good practice tests
I bought Sybex study guides and the virtual test center...and I have no problem passing all five tests. I found these practice questions very helpful, they are a little more difficult than the actual tests (The questions come with the study guide are too easy). There are a few errors inside, but if you don't want to invest in other more expensive material like self test software, this one is a good choice. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent writing styles but worth it.
Oracle 9i has been out for some time now so I'm sure most folks starting their certification path will be going that route.
If you're still on the 8i path, as I am, this book is for you. I mentioned in a review of the SQL & PL/SQL Sybex book that it was flawed but still the best out there. This is probably about the same. There are two authors credited with this book so maybe that explains why there seem to be a couple of different writing styles. Sometimes everything is spelled out and easy to understand. Other times, it seems a bit rushed and an assumption seems to be made that I should know more than actually do.
All-in-all, for the most part it's a good read. I've learned a lot but not taken the test yet. That's the ultimate test of how good this book is.
I'd give it 3.5/5

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Oraganized Book
It is a good book , helped me to prepare for Archecture and Admin and as well for Backup & Recovery. I used this book + my work exp. which helped to succeed in the test. i recommend this book in additon to any of your existing resources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, a few comments
10/28/2002
First of all, I used this book as the only source and passed both the exams. Backup = 48/60 (3 weeks prep), Arch+Admin = 50/64 (3 weeks prep). Was disappointed (with myself) with both the scores, because I have good experience, and also had a 90% score on pl/sql exam, and I expected a similar score.

I think the main problem was that Oracle has updated their questions bank for 8i, and there are a few questions in there that this book does not cover. Personally, I think Oracle frames these questions to elicit bad responses. In some cases, I understood the questions well, but the answer choices were poorly phrased. In others, you had to select two answers, but more than two were clearly eligible.

My comments on B+R :-
1) Look up rman, from Oracle docs.
2) The questions list in the book is not sufficient.
I have heavy rman experience, and I scored perfect on all rman sections, which may have saved me.

Architecture + Administration: This part was more relevant to the exam. But again, I feel Oracle has updated their questions bank.

Overall, great book, but look up ora docs, for more info to feel secure.

3-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for A&A, 2 stars for B&R, Overall 3.5 stars
I completed my OCP exam last December 2001 and this book helped me passed A&A with a high mark.

Part I covers around 99% of the exam objectives. It was very well written and presented. The practice exams were really great and I personally feel it's a bit more challenging than STS.

Part II covers only around 40-50% of the exam objectives. It lacks a lot of detail especially on RMAN which covers 30% of the exam. It's a good overview on B&R but definitely not for the exam. Unless you are really experienced in B&R and RMAN, chances are you'll fail the exam using this book alone.

Overall, I find it to be a good study guide but you definitely need another book for the B&R exam. I strongly recommend this for book for the A&A exam but unfortunately I can't say the same for the B&R exam.

BTW, I still use this book today for reference =)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Arch. and Admin. Exam
I am a person with limited exposure to Oracle DBA stuff and this book was wonderful as far as the Part I is concerned. It is very well structured, easy to read and comes with a great CD full of practice exams.

I passed the exam with a 58/64 score and I found the real exam much easier after going thro' this book (chapters 1 thro 9).

I am not sure about the Backup and Recovery piece as I have just started my preparations.. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Once Good now dated!
I purchased this book recently (Feb 2009) because I thought it would help with getting the current 10 & 11 Oracle OCA & OCP certifications as a DBA.The book is written for Oracle versions 8 & 9.It does have a few good hints in it that I have not seen in other books.
My opinion - for current certification classes and this book is very dated. For the person who wants to find a nice non Oracle OCA - OCP study book this is not it.The author and editor really need to be on the third edition of this book now.For a DBA or an instructor, this book would be of little use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beginners and Experts Alike!
I'm new to Oracle and just completed reading this book.I found to be a very easy read with dozens of hints and tips I didn't find in other books. You can tell the author really wants to make sure you understand the points he is trying to make.

I like the chapters containing non-technical, but still important information (i.e. increasing the quality of change management and evaluating third party products).

All in all, I would rate this book a great buy! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book - Bad CD
I enjoyed reading this presentation of the Oracle software even though it contained many typographical errors. It was like sitting down with a senior software engineer and having him explain how the software works.

My only disappointment was with the included CD containing practice tests. I had to have the CD replaced because it was shipped before it was tested. The replacement CD would not install on my PC using the instructions in the readme file. It appears no one tested the instructions. I don't understand why the publisher is unwilling to test the product before shipping it. I was able to run the tests directly from the CD, however this was much noiser than running from disk.

This book is still better than what Oracle provides, even with the CD problems.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
You can pass your exams if you rely only on this book, but you won't have a comfortable margin. The performance tuning section is the stronger of the section, and would give it 5 stars.I didn't find errors, and did pass the performance tuning exam with 58 out of 59.

The network section is why I gave the book an overall rating of three stars. There are errors (like explaining how to use connection pooling with connection concentration), typos, wrong commands, obvious -if- you knew the material. If you didn't know the material, the errors were confusing. There were also errors in the test sections. One or two errors may not seem like a big deal unless it's the difference between passing the test or not. I got the impression that the person who wrote the networking section didn't really know the nuts and bolts of networking. For networking I'd recommend The Exam Cram Book; accurate, to the point, easy to understand, written by someone who knew her stuff. I passed the networking exam, 55 out of 59, but reading the Exam Cram and reviewing the Oracle documentation would have been sufficient.

4-0 out of 5 stars good preparation kit
I'd like to say this book is good but not excellent. Divided into 2 parts, Performance Tuning and Network Administration. You can rely on Network Administration part to make you pass the exam without using other preparation kit. But for the Performance Tuning part, I accept that it's not quite complete. Don't be surprised if you find some questions in the exam ask about something that never stated in this book. But may be you have no choice since I've never seen Performance Tuning material that cover all of the exam ( even from Oracle Press). Anyway, you still can pass it ( like me) but not so good score.Just read it carefully

4-0 out of 5 stars I recommend this book.
I scored 54 out of 57 on the 8i Performance and Tuning exam using this book. The explainations in that section are better than in any other book I've used. I also used the Self Test Software and some notes I found on-line to get fully prepared.

The Network Admin portion of the book is good too, but there seems to be a lot more errors in that part. Also some of the examples confused me, but perhaps that was due to the errors, I don't know.Better supplement this book with another reference, just in case.

This book is heavy and bulky, so it isn't something I'd want to tote around.Wish they didn't bundle two books together. On the whole it is a great book; if not for the errors in it, I'd have given it 5 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Performance Tuning incomple but enough to pass
My Performance Tuning exam study was completely based on this book and I passed. However, I had a few surprises on the exam; there were certain things that were not even mentioned in the book. I did 80%. For my previous exams, I'd used books in this series but I had also studied Oracle lecture notes and I had made more than 90%.For Performance Tuning exam, don't forget to study the MTS chapter, which is in the Network Administration section of the book. There will be several questions on the subject. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me pass the exam
This book covered the exam syllabus very well. I very much relied on this book and passed the OCP exam.
The knowledge I gained from this book also enhanced my skills to administer our product's Oracle database.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading material
I've only read Chapter 1, but already I challenge Mr. Mortensen's misleading statements. "A flat-file database resembles a spreadsheet, because it is all contained in one 'page' or file." "dBASE, Access, and other personal computer databases are examples of flat-file databases." "Two of the most serious (disadvantages) involve redundant data and inconsistent data."
The fact that all data is stored in one file does not constitute a flat-file database. And, at least with Access, redundant data is not encouraged. In my experience flat-files refer to the storage of data that can be displayed with any text editor. Poor design techniques are the cause of redundant and inconsistent data, not flat-file databases.
My criticism is significant because this subject is included in the quiz at the end of the chapter.
The discussion on data warehouses is also misleading. In the discussion about OLAP and OLTP, Mr. Mortensen describes a data mart as transactional. This is news to me. Data marts are OLAP models, either derived from data sources or generated from a data warehouse.
With such a shaky foundation and if these issues are in the actual DBO exam, it is difficult to see how anyone could pass the exam by relying on the information in this book.
On the other hand, Mr. Mortensen appears to know the Oracle jargon pretty well. At least in the first chapter...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Guidelines, Great For First Time Oracle Installation.
This book gives a general overview of what was present on the 1z0-411 exam. It is also an excellent resource for those who have not yet used Oracle, and wish to learn how to install it using Oracle Universal Installer. I used this in combination with Self Test Software's Practice Exam for 1z0-411 and passed on the first try. I only rated this book with 4 stars due to having the majority of the book describing the Universal Installer, and giving a broad overview of what was actually on the exam without many details. Good general book to understanding the basics of the Oracle 8i Database, and understanding what the different screens actually look like.

1-0 out of 5 stars OCP: Oracle8i DBO Study Guide
I used this book to study for the exam.It was helpful when it came to installing Oracle, other than that, the book was hard to follow because there were so many errors.
Some of the screen shots from the exercises were incorrect.
I would suggest learning SQL, this book does not cover this subject adequately enough for you to pass the test; 16 of my test questions were related to SQL.
Overall, this is not a very good book, I'm surprised Sybex let this one leave the editing room!
If there was a 0 star rating, I would have used it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but enough
I passed iDBO exam using this book and Oracle DBO (not iDBO) study guide. Some experience with SQL queries is required. And also I did all examples and played a lot with Oracle for NT.
That book does not have deep coverage of Oracle architecture (DBO study guide do it better), Backup and recovery (you have to play with it a lot) and SQL/DDL/DML (I migrated my SQL Server database to Oracle and tested it). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great code depot
This is a great overview of Oracle internals but the best part is the code depot.

All of the scripts worked as is and it was a real joy to see the results for my Oracle database.I highly recommend this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Mike Ault winner!
I have all of Mr. Ault's books, and this one is one of his best works. It contains loads of working scripts and an Internet code download to get the working code.It also has excellent explainations of the concepts and internals from the output of the scripts.

This is definitely not a beginner book, and it is as complex as any of the other advanced Oracle books. If you want super-deep details, this book is for you! ... Read more
