5-0 out of 5 stars Well done.. A classroom tool
When my technology director asked me to create a pre-engineering class, I didn't know where to start. After talking to some high tech parents, they introduced me to SolidWorks. The students love it.It was so easy to get started and now my students are better than me.But I wanted to do more so I bought a VEX robot kit.

This book is a great way to combine learning CAD and building actually robots. The book takes students through making parts and in less than a week, students are creating parts on their own. With the book, my students have instructions on how to model the parts and compare to the actual parts. Then they assemble the parts in different configurations.Combining this book with VEX robot kit has been an affordable way to introduce engineering into the classroom. On parent's night, students present their portfolios complete with drawings. My director is happy, my students are happy and next term I have a full enrollment. ... Read more

Excerpt: SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis) is a general-purpose open source analog electronic circuit simulator. It is a powerful program that is used in IC and board-level design to check the integrity of circuit designs and to predict circuit behavior. Integrated circuits, unlike board-level designs composed of discrete parts, are impossible to breadboard before manufacture. Further, the high costs of photolithographic masks and other manufacturing prerequisites make it essential to design the circuit to be as close to perfect as possible before the integrated circuit is first built. Simulating the circuit with SPICE is the industry-standard way to verify circuit operation at the transistor level before committing to manufacturing an integrated circuit. Board-level circuit designs can often be breadboarded for testing. Even with a breadboard, some circuit properties may not be accurate compared to the final printed wiring board, such as parasitic resistances and capacitances. These parasitic components can often be esti...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=180251 ... Read more

Product Description
The rapid evolution and explosive growth of integrated circuittechnology have impacted society more than any other technologicaldevelopment of the 20th century. Integrated circuits (ICs) are useduniversally and the expanding use of IC technology requires moreaccurate circuit analysis methods and tools, prompting theintroduction of computers into the design process. The goal of thisbook is to build a firm foundation in the use of computer-assistedtechniques for IC device and process design. Both practical andanalytical viewpoints are stressed to give the reader the backgroundnecessary to appreciate CAD tools and to feel comfortable with theiruse.
Technology CAD - Computer Simulation of IC Processes andDevices presents a unified discourse on process and device CAD asinterrelated subjects, building on a wide range of experiences andapplications of the SUPREM program. Chapter 1 focuses on themotivation for coupled process and device CAD. In Chapter 2 SUPREM IIIis introduced, and process CAD is discussed in terms ofion-implantation, impurity diffusion, and oxidation models. Chapter 3introduces the Stanford device analysis program SEDAN III(SEmiconductor Device ANalysis). The next three chapters move intogreater detail concerning device operating principles and analysistechniques. Chapter 4 reviews the classical formulation of pnjunction theory and uses device analysis (SEDAN) both to evaluate someof the classical assumptions and to investigate the difficult problemof high level injection. Chapter 5 returns to MOS devices, reviews thefirst-order MOS theory, and introduces some important second-ordereffects. Chapter 6 considers the bipolar transistor. Chapter 7considers the application of process simulation and device analysis totechnology design. The BiCMOS process is selected as a useful designvehicle for two reasons. First, it allows the reader to pull togetherconcepts from the entire book. Second, the inherent nature of BiCMOStechnology offers real constraints and hence trade-offs which must beunderstood and accounted for. ... Read more

Product Description
Dynamic power management is a design methodology aiming atcontrolling performance and power levels of digital circuits andsystems, with the goal of extending the autonomous operation time ofbattery-powered systems, providing graceful performance degradationwhen supply energy is limited, and adapting power dissipation tosatisfy environmental constraints. Dynamic Power Management: Design Techniques and CAD Toolsaddresses design techniques and computer-aided design solutions forpower management. Different approaches are presented and organized inan order related to their applicability to control-units,macro-blocks, digital circuits and electronic systems, respectively. All approaches are based on the principle of exploiting idleness ofcircuits, systems, or portions thereof. They involve both thedetection of idleness conditions and the freezing of power-consumingactivities in the idle components. The book also describes some approaches to system-level powermanagement, including Microsoft's OnNow architecture and the `AdvancedConfiguration and Power Management' standard proposed by Intel,Microsoft and Toshiba. These approaches migrate power management tothe software layer running on hardware platforms, thus providing aflexible and self-configurable solution to adapting thepower/performance tradeoff to the needs of mobile (and fixed)computing and communication. Dynamic Power Management: Design Techniques and CAD Tools is ofinterest to researchers and developers of computer-aided design toolsfor integrated circuits and systems, as well as to system designers. ... Product Description
Computer-aided-design (CAD) of semiconductor microtransducers is relatively new in contrast to their counterparts in the integrated circuit world. Integrated silicon microtransducers are realized using microfabrication techniques similar to those for standard integrated circuits (ICs). Unlike IC devices, however, microtransducers must interact with their environment, so their numerical simulation is considerably more complex. While the design of ICs aims at suppressing "parasitic" effects, microtransducers thrive on optimizing the one or the other such effect. The challenging quest for physical models and simulation tools enabling microtransducer CAD is the topic of this book. The book is intended as a text for graduate students in Electrical Engineering and Physics and as a reference for CAD engineers in the microsystems industry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Microtransducer CAD by A. Nathan
This is a much needed graduate level book/monograph on the physical principles of sensors and how sensors can be modeled.Although the physical principles are introduced and discussed using senior-levelmathematics (advanced calculus, vectors andmatrices)all the chaptersare easy to read and follow; and provide the reader with the necessaryprinciples and models for research and development in transducers. Thereare hardly any typographical errors. The book will be extremely useful inacademic and corporate research and development laboratories working onsensors/transducers. It is ideal for graduate courses on sensors inelectrical engineering, mechanical engineering and physics departments. Asa course textbook, the instructor will need to develop his own problem setas the book does not have questions or problems; though there are someexamples in the book. As a graduate level course book it would score 4/5due to a lack of end-of-chapter problems. There are numerous essentialreferences for graduate students and engineers in this field and I foundthese references to be very helpful. What I like most about the book isthat it has many tables of selected properties. For example, in Chapter 5on Electrical and Thermal Properties, the authors provide several tables ofproperties, such as the Seebeck coefficient in semiconductors, Seebeckcoefficient in metals, thermal conductivity of films etc. and they alsocarefully give the references from which the data were taken. I found thesetables to be very useful for quickly checking on various physicalproperties of materials used in sensors. As a monograph, it is most highlyrecommended and it scores 5/5. All university and corporate researchlibraries should have a copy. ... Read more

Product Description
Sibling have considerable influence on children's development, yet most human development research has neglected the investigation of sibling socialization in favor of a focus on parental socialization. This volume uses a family systems framework to examine the ways in which siblings contribute uniquely to one another's social and emotional development.

The groundbreaking lines of research in this volume address mechanisms by which children are influenced by their sisters and brothers, ways in which these processes of sibling socialization are similar to and different from those with parents, and conditions under which sibling socialization has postive versus negative impact on individual development. Throughout this volume, attention is devoted to contextual factors that moderate sibling influences, such as family structure, life course events, ethnicity and culture, gender, and demographic indicators.

This is the 126th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. The mission of this series is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in the field of child and adolescent development. Each volume focuses on a specific new direction or research topic, and is edited by an expert or experts on that topic. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book provides a framework within which existing or planned computer aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems and simultaneous engineering, can be integrated into an organization to achieve maximum efficiency, utilization and control. Companies are looking towards these new tools and approaches as a response to the pressures, such as decreasing production development cycle time (time based competition) and the increasing demands of customers, which they are now facing. It is not enough simply to adopt and install these approaches, managing integration and treating the implementation as an on-going exercise has been shown to be a key element of a companies' success. In promoting this process of continual review and appraisal, attention is directed towards developing appropriate managerial and organizational integration between departments, functions and operations. The workbook consists of four stages: "strategy" - understanding the strategies involved; "audit" - auditing the current situation of CAD, CAD/CAM and the organization and the potential for simultaneous engineering; "change" - developing the organization and mechanisms for change; and "people" - organizing for the analysis and establishing the infrastructure for the change process. Worksheets are included which cover the necessary elements of each section and provide a basis for discussion within the implementation team. This workbook is a practical guide for managers, providing examples and guidance; it is managerial, rather than technical, and accommodates a wide skill base. The book should be of most use to operations, production and IT managers, engineers, designers and those involved with product development management, but it should also be of interest to managers in accounting, corporate strategy and marketing. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This book is about the use of materials information in engineering design and manufacture, and how computerized CAD/CAM systems change the ways in which this information can be effectively used. It is estimated that the number of large materials databases will increase by a factor of at least ten during the 1990s, as companies computerize their data holdings to make them truly compatible with, and exploitable by, developing computerized engineering systems. Valid and accessible materials information is vital in terms not only of successful competition in industry but also of recent developments in product liability. The development of materials databases is a "new" subject and this is the first technical review of a fast developing area. Publically funded development programmes include the (international) Versailles Agreement on Materials and Standards as well as initiatives under the Commission of the European Communities and, in the USA, the National Institute for Standards and Technology and the Materials Property Data Network. This book tackles the challenge of producing appropriate, correct and useful databases, models, knowledge-based systems and integrated CAD/CAM concurrent engineering design environments. Dr. Sargent reviews techniques for integrating the fragmented body of materials information and making it available to design engineers. The discussion is firmly anchored to examples from the manufacturing, automotive and aerospace industries. ... Read more
