1-0 out of 5 stars There has to be a better overview out there.
The 3rd. ed. was required text for my Data Communications Concepts (modems, routers, etc.) class. The class is over and now I can say: this book is poorly organized collection of facts, the Boy Guide Book of Everything About Data Communications. The index was poor and all the web tags in the margins went to the same place (the publisher's site). The pages were idiosyncratically renumbered from "1" for each chapter, making it difficult to judge the length of the book. It was also physically the most poorly bound paperback text I have seen. This was forced on our instructors by committee, but there must be a better summary of data communications out there for those of us who have to make a living at it.If you have to buy it, you won't die, but if you don't have to buy it... don't. ... Product Description

A must-have volume for every communication researcher’s library, The SAGE Sourcebook of Advanced Data Analysis Methods for Communication Research provides an introductory treatment of various advanced statistical methods applied to research in the field of communication. Written by authors who use these methods in their own research, each chapter gives a non-technical overview of what the method is and how it can be used to answer communication-related questions or aide the researcher dealing with difficult data problems. Students and faculty interested in diving into a new statistical topic-such as latent growth modeling, multilevel modeling, propensity scoring, or time series analysis-will find each chapter an excellent springboard for acquiring the background needed to jump into more advanced, technical readings.

5-0 out of 5 stars The simplest to understand
This is one of the all-time best books on computer networking and data communications. The diagrams make it perhaps the simplest to understand, of all books. The style is lucid, plenty of examples are given and there are exercises after every chapter. Apart from Tanenbaum and Comer, this is a must for every serious student of data communications.

This book provides frameworks and methodology for solving problems as technology continues to advance. A "top-down" approach is used, starting with the overall business problem, and then showing how technology can solve the problem. This book goes into depth in describing the technology and is very "hands-on" and current. It is designed for the IT employees who actually build networks and not the managers who merely oversee. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars New information taught well
This book conveys information technology aspects in a serious maner. How the information technology relates to business is elucidated very well.Case studies are provided at the end of each chapter and are applicable to real-life problems.

At the end of each chapter are discussion questions to help review important points presented in the chapter.

Answers to the chapter cases and the questions can be acquired from the publishing company.

I appreciate this book since it has taught me how business and information technology depend on each other to produce a profitable company. This book presents information technology aspects in a clear and concise manner, as compared to other IT books that delve into lingo and the like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Applied Data Communications - A Business Oriented Approach
Unlike many books, written on today's technology issues, Jim approaches this topic from the business perspective. This top-down approach allows one to understand how a set of technologies maps to the business drivers. This books looks at business impact from a business management perspective. Moreover, this book covers a range of topics that allow the reader to understand the complexity, and interrelationships, of today's distributed internetworking environment.

The reader will be exposed to layered architectures - understanding how they interrelate, yet remain separate. The topics range from an overview of Data Communications - including voice, through local area networking - protocols and OSs, WANs, internetworking and remote access. The book closes with coverage of the network development life cycle, network management and security.

What sets this book apart from many is the way Jim approaches technology solutions based upon business drivers and criteria.Technology, in and of itself, does not enhance a business' ability to deliver value. However, when one approaches technology solutions, or innovation, based upon business criteria they are more likely to add value to the bottom line.Jim encapsulates the concept of value added technology solutions in his presentation of data communications. This book is well written, concise, and understandable - a must read for individuals focused on technology and business!

5-0 out of 5 stars A deep grasp of algebraic coding theory
The book is well organized and mathematically rigorous. It depicts a full picture of conventional algebraic coding theory in a systematic fashion. As a specialist in coding theory, I give my highest rank.

4-0 out of 5 stars Channel Coding gone wild
I used this textbook for an introduction to Channel Coding class I took (graduate level). I think that the material is difficult, but this book is remarkably clear, considering that. I had no experience with Galois Fields or any of that kind of math before starting with this book, but I was able to grasp it. I think the main thing missing in this book are good summaries for each chapter, giving highlights of the important stuff. Sometimes it's hard to get an overall picture of the material, I got bogged down in math sometimes. Visually, the book is beautiful, good fonts, charts, etc...

1-0 out of 5 stars Students beware!
I am taking an error correcting code class as a graduate EE student where this text is assigned. The book is a reference manual for people who already know the material. It is not for those who are new to algebraic codes or galois field arithmetic.
The book is introduced as an introductory book, but it is nothing of the sort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers important topics
Anything by Doug de Maw is worth reading and does not date quickly. This book covers a number of topics that are poorly covered elsewhere and which are essential reading for anyone involved in radio design.Advanced hobbyists would benefit from this as much as engineers and students.

Chapter headings:
1. Ferromagnetic devices - toroids, beads, solenoids, pot-cores.Covers tuned circuits, chokes, broadband transformers, transmission line transformers, hybrid transformers and other applications.
2. Networks for semiconductor circuits - RLC networks for RF amplifiers, drivers, tank circuits, filters.Heavy emphasis on the neglected topic of impedance matching and optimisation.
3. Transmitter design basics - oscillators, amplifiers, stability, MOSpower FETs and some practical circuits.
4. Receiver design basics - mixers, IF, AGC, BFO, audio filters and some practical receiver circuits.
5. Communications antennas - looks at antennas that are never considered in standard texts: loops, helical whips, electrically short antennas and using towers as antennas.

The writing is clear and well-informed, diagrams are well-presented and informative.

4-0 out of 5 stars One Up From Technician's Hanbook!
This is a good book that goes beyone those intro to fiber optics books(that left out the equations and engineering technologies). It's basicallya non-equation book for engineers, rather than techs or curious fans offiber optics (it does get a wee bit complicated).

This book goes intomore detail on fiber optic components, applications (networks),manufacturing (packaging, semiconductor fab techniques etc) and touches oncurring edge devices (well, the book is 2 years old...).

I'd recommendit if you want to know what your engineers and boss are talking about. It'snot the book to grab if you're going to start designing routers orwaveguides (you'd probably know the stuff in the book if you're given thejob to do such things...)

It supplies technical personnel who have little or no background in data communications with the knowledge that they will need to face the challenge of understanding systems integration. The author presents information in a clear manner, and higher math is minimal. Emphasizing understanding, rather than design criteria, the author discusses terminology, standards, and protocols including EIA/TIA 232, 485, IEEE 488 and IEEE 802. Particular emphasis is placed on HART(tm) and ISA-50 Digital Fieldbus. 4-0 out of 5 stars A strange vision of an important subject
Privacy is very important for any data manipulation and data mining gives the feeling to the large public to have the power to discover very private things in data. And it's true.
The authors try to find some methods to do data mining in avoiding of having access to the private part (too much private part) of these data but in staying able to learn something about individuals behind. It's not easy and very interesting to learn.
Of course the applications are limited because very often data mining has for purpose to score a particular individual.
