Product Description
The numbers are astonishing: of the 45 million Americans who invest in today's stock market, only 5 million realize they can invest commission-free through dividend reinvestment plans (DRIPs) and direct stock purchase plans (DSPs). But as more and more investors clamor to cut costs and take control of their own portfolio decisions, this number is destined to rise--dramatically!

All About DRIPs and DSPs tells investors everything they need to know about where to find direct investment opportunities, and how to profit from their affordable compounding benefits. Author George Fisher--a pioneer of more than 30 years investing in DRIPs and DSPs--discusses:

* Today's top 100 DRIP/DSP companies
* Advice for building a personalized, diversified mutual fund
* How to use PEG (price to earnings growth ratio) to identify superior long-term opportunities

4-0 out of 5 stars All About Drips and DSPs
This is a very good book about buying stocks directly from the company. In this market why pay broker fees. A bunch of drunken monkeys throwing darts at the Wall Street Journal can do just as well at picking good stock as a broker and there's no fees. This is a great nuts and bolts book on buying drips. This is a good book for the beginning investor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Investing for Joe Average
This book succeeds with its target audience on so many levels. It's written in a non-pretentious manner and covers all the bases very well. Due to the nature of this type of investing anyone can pick it up and be in the stock market in no time.

How much more timely could this book be? With the gut-wrenching gyrations in the stock market right now, the prudent, dollar-cost-averaging investor's style deserves a comprehensive illustration. This book provides that.

The company capsules are an excellent bonus. You don't see anything like that in the typical investing book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The investor's friend, George Fisher
A very readable primer for beginner as well as experienced investor. This book is sure to give a good case of heartburn to "financial planners" and "life retirement consultants" who make their living on portfolio maintenance charges. Chapter by chapter, George Fisher uncomplicates the world of dividend reinvestment and direct stock purchase plans, and shows the reader that it's just not as hard as it seems to become one's own self-reliant investor. Section "Best Of The Best" which profiles 16 top companies is alone worth the price of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a Book That DRIPs With Meat!
Dividend reinvestment planning is the dirty little secret your broker and mutual fund salespeople don't want you to know about. Why? Because DRIPpers pay all the commissions to themselves.
To date few books about DRIPs have gone much beyond the mechanics of starting a plan and listing a number of companies that offer DRIPs. Most books describe a "one size fits all" approach to DRIPping. Yet anyone who DRIPs will tell you it is more complex than that.
All About DRIPs and DSPs breaks the mold. It could be seen as the first text book and artistic approach to dividend reinvestment planning. There is the usual material about how to begin a plan but it also begins to consider individual approaches to the process. Although individuals are responsible for choosing their own investments Mr. Fisher helps the reader develop the skills to make wise choices. He teaches an investor how to research companies through simplified analysis, looking at management and reading an annual report. He sifts these to find what is important and does it with humour. I particularly noted the sections on how to read between the lines when management speaks or how Harley Davidson has the kind of brand loyalty that causes people to tatoo the company logo to their bodies.
There are also sections on portfolio planning with DRIPs, how bonds can be DRIPped and lists of DRIP offering companies with outstanding historical performances.
DRIPs are for take charge individuals, with only small amounts of money to invest, who are tired of paying exhorbitant fees for questionable service. This book has provided me other strategies to consider than my own and broadened my approach. All About DRIPs and DSPs is for the self motivated individuals who wants to invest effectively and successfully.
This is the kind of book DRIPpers have been waiting for. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Instant access: 100% agreed
Hi,

The "Instant Access" motto makes 100% sense for this book: all information that you need is provided there, very easy to find and digest. It is not a book on algorithm design or DSP implementation, but is certainly a good reference on terminology, concepts, and explanations of technical matters related to Digital Video. It is certainly a reference book for an engineer to find "Instant Access" information to any topic related to Video. Personally, I'd liked it had more "How-To" information, but overall is a nice-to-have reference.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not sure
The ideas are great, but not sure if they have practical application. I tried the Smoothed Adaptive Momentum Strategy and it really gives poor results, huge drawdowns for SPY, negative results with DIA, MDY, and SMH, even without transaction costs. If I optimize it for the training dataset, it performs badly on the test dataset. The Fisher Transform of normalized prices has definitely very sharp turning points, but backtesting shows the tendency to overtrade and has negative results for major indexes, without transaction costs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Indicators EVER!
Don't bother getting his two previous books--MESA and Trading Market Cycles & Rocket Science for Traders--this book rewrites them both!I've programmed the strategies into AmiBroker with ease and have made custom tweaks with great success.Ehlers is up there with the great Welles Wilder who developed RSI and ADX in the 1970s.

Honestly, I've read the book four times and refer to it often.Since I have a degree in electrical engineering like Ehlers, the book was manageable. If you're not a EE, then it will take much more reading if you want to understand the math behind his indicators.I can't begin to explain how innovative these indicators are.The EasyLanguage code is the most understandable; ignore the EFS code unless you use that software.

Ehlers website ([...]) has several great papers that will lead you to rethink traditional indicators.

I've found the Instantaneous Trend, Adaptive Momentum and Super Smoother to be the best indicators explained in the book.I created three super smoother difference indicators (SS2 - SS3) with 8, 13 and 21 periods--these are awesome (page 246 last paragraph).I also created a super smoother MACD with 8 and 13 periods (third order) with is very good too.

Like any one indicator, there is no "holy grail" with Ehlers, but his indicators make superb inputs to neural networks, which are the holy grail in my opinion.Coupling Ehlers' indicators with cutting edge neural networks solutions like HyperNEAT will give you a "Matrix" moment.

This book, although highly technical, will give you space-age tools in a blacksmith marketplace.Good luck and trade well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Purchase and Delivery of Cybernetic Analysis ...
The purchase of the book was easy and its delivery was prompt, even with the Amazon offer of free but relatively delayed delivery.

This is the second book of John Ehlers, a well-established pioneer in cycles and trend analysis for the technical analysis of stock price behavior. It is for advanced analysis, and it is a sequel to his classic book of "Rocket Science for Traders".You do need a math aptitude and some programming experience to get the maximum benefit of both books.John also offers eratta and corrections for minor typos in the formulas as well at his Mesa website.

Those who find this book of interest might also check on John Bollinger's classic book "Bollinger on Bollinger Bands", Steve Achelis' book on "Technical Analysis from A to Z", Steve Nison's book on "Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques", and Martin Pring's "Technical Analysis Explained", Paul Murphy's "Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets", and "Technical Analysis of Stock Trends" by Edwards and MaGee.This is not a complete list, but a good start.

Remember that no single book offers the Holy Grail of investment.Stay objective to balancing your background, because investing mistakes can be the most expensive education you will ever have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellente product!
This is a book clear and very easy to read, for me as physics research, and to my development is very useful.
Strongly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brain Surgeons Can't Trade Stocks Like Ehlers Can
John Ehlers newest title is sure to make even the brightest of brain surgeons quiver for fear of closing the renal artery prior to completing the operation. Other reviewers may diss this author but his latest book truly reaches for the stars and makes it. The chapters while short, are to the point and exquisitely illustrate the concept being taught. If you are new to trading systems the shortness of the explanations may be too short but for experienced traders and developers of trading systems they are long enough.

Aspects of many indicators are reviewed with fresh insight added for several new systems not talked about in print before. Removing the lag is the traders dream. Many of the indicators shown do work although errata in the code does spoil some of the implementations given. Ehlers has provided for the keener updates on his website that corrects the mistakes, kudos here for doing the right thing.

Overall Ehlers has done it again and this book should be a staple in any traders library. As for the wannabees wanting all the answers and sure fire methods, choose brain surgery as your career option. No one said trading would be easy but Ehlers has given more toolsets that a successful trader can use in a concise to the point book.

The programme is written specifically for floating point DSP(texas instrument) so some adjustment is needed if we want to implement iton fixed point DSP or other DSP...

additional comments: A bit outdatedfor the choice of the processor, but the fundamental is still there.

Should include implementation on fixed point.

Product Description
Synthesis and Optimization of DSP Algorithms describes approaches taken to synthesising structural hardware descriptions of digital circuits from high-level descriptions of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms. The book contains:

-A tutorial on the subjects of digital design and architectural synthesis, intended for DSP engineers,
-A tutorial on the subject of DSP, intended for digital designers,
-A discussion of techniques for estimating the peak values likely to occur in a DSP system, thus enabling an appropriate signal scaling. Analytic techniques, simulation techniques, and hybrids are discussed. The applicability of different analytic approaches to different types of DSP design is covered,
-The development of techniques to optimise the precision requirements of a DSP algorithm, aiming for efficient implementation in a custom parallel processor. The idea is to trade-off numerical accuracy for area or power-consumption advantages. Again, both analytic and simulation techniques for estimating numerical accuracy are described and contrasted. Optimum and heuristic approaches to precision optimisation are discussed,
-A discussion of the importance of the scheduling, allocation, and binding problems, and development of techniques to automate these processes with reference to a precision-optimized algorithm,
-Future perspectives for synthesis and optimization of DSP algorithms.

A wide body of literature exists covering separately the areas of DSP, hardware design, and design automation. This book brings together the fields, concentrating on those transformations, optimizations, and design techniques that would usually be considered to cross the domain boundaries between "pure DSP" and "pure digital implementation". As such, this book forms a valuable contribution to the existing literature.
Synthesis and Optimization of DSP Algorithms is of use both to researchers and students in the field of design automation for DSP systems, and to those wishing to implement state-of-the-art techniques within an Electronic Design Automation framework. ... Read more

A unique system focus that presents specific solutions for specific appliances

This publication presents state-of-the-art power management techniques for modern electronic appliances that rely on such very large-scale integration (VLSI) chips as CPUs and DSPs. The author thoroughly covers all aspects of the field, including semiconductor manufacturing processes, packages, circuits, functions, and systems. A unique and significant contribution to the field, the publication adopts a "system focus" by first presenting the appliance and then delving into the power management architecture and topologies that best serve each appliance.

In addition to specific techniques and applications, the publication discusses fundamental physical and socioeconomic issues. For example, the author examines Moore's law and its effect on power management and heat dissipation, which points to a future breakthrough needed to continue the fast pace of advancement in the high-tech industry.

The author provides a solid technical foundation and an analysis of popular electronic appliances, including:
* Overview of the semiconductor industry
* Plain-English discussion of semiconductor processes and packages
* Step-by-step guide to analog design building from the transistor to higher-level functions, leading to the implementation of a complete voltage regulator
* Popular DC-DC voltage regulation architectures
* AC-DC architectures for power conversion
* Ultra-portable devices, such as cellular phones, PDAs, and digital still cameras
* Desktop and notebook PCs

The publication concludes with a chapter on special power management topics and an expert forecast of future directions for the field. 1-0 out of 5 stars This book was a horrible idea.
This concept behind this book is to introduce students to one of the more difficult aspects of ECE before they have even started the curriculum. I'm not sure how it is implemented at other colleges but at my college it is very much like a line from the original Willy Wonka movie:

"I've just decided to switch our Friday schedule to Monday, which means that the test we take each Friday on what we learned during the week will now take place on Monday before we've learned it. But since today is Tuesday, it doesn't matter in the slightest. Pencils ready!"

In short, this book CANNOT, by itself, teach you what you need to know. It is far too truncated and assumes you already know things you might well not. Furthermore, if the book is implemented as it is intended, the student isn't ready for the material contained in the book. On top of that, a critical component of the book is the Matlab portion. Which presumably some college integrate into an actual lab portion of the class. My college does not, and if you were trying to learn it by yourself..well obviously you wouldn't have a TA helping you. So, without a lab, you are at a complete loss for doing a critical part of the book...unless of course you already know Matlab.

This book is terrible, its implementation (at least at my college) is beyond terrible, and I can't imagine anyone using it to self teach without SEVERAL other textbooks to assist.

B.T.W. I'm sure professors, grad students, and people who already have a firm grasp of the all the unstated prerequisites for this book absolutely love the book. It seems like an advanced Schaum's outline pretending to be an introductory text...absolutely amazingly horrid, I hate it! and you should too!

OH and, as another reviewer pointed out. This book is NOT the same as DSP First: A Multimedia Approach, which I have not used and can't say anything about.

5-0 out of 5 stars exellent condition
The product was quickly delivered in great condition. Had used sticker on it, but otherwise appeared new

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
I have been using this book for my master's course and this is the first time I have understood DSP. And it feels great to finally have grasped the fundamentals of the subject that has long evaded me. The treatment in this book is very unique and novel. And the mathematics is used as a tool to help understanding the concepts and not given in the form of pages of proofs in which the reader can get lost. I salute authors for coming out with such an original and easy-to-understand approach to the subject.
Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Book CD and supporting web page is first rate
My only complaint is that some of the algebra should be worked out with a few more intermediate steps. The worked out homework problems are fabulous and sooo plentiful.

I wish I had the time to really read the whole book.My ECE201 course will probably only cover around 6 chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I think this book is absolutely outstanding. I don't understand any of the negative comments. The cd that comes with the book is indispensble. It provides example after example. I actually bought schaum's outline of dsp as well, but because of all the examples on the cd (they are handwritten) I don't even have a need to refer to the outline.

In addition, I thought the content of the chapters to be very readable. The only downside is that because the book is dated 1998 the matlab code is out of date and some of the drills no longer work with the newer versions. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Why buy this book?
This book is basically just precisely what the TI lab manuals have in them.In fact, this book poorly explains most topics, and it does not provide proper explanation of the example code.Further, the labs are basically done for you! There is actually nothing to do except run the labs and complete a few mundane tasks. My professor and TA even said this book was poor as textbooks go.I've read other books on programming microcontrollers, CPUs, etc., and those have had full explanations of the given code examples.Much of the information in this book simply seems to assume you already know the material.

5-0 out of 5 stars response to the posted review
As the author of the book, I find it very annoying to see a comment posted stating the availability of the materials from the TI manuals without understanding what the objective of the book has been. As stated in the preface of the book, the processor material in this book is a restructured, modified, and condensed version of twenty or so TI manuals on the TMS320C6000 so that it can be used as a textbook for a real-time hands-on DSP lab course. Many schools have used this book as the text for their DSP lab courses. Although some figures have been redrawn with the permission of TI, the entire writing is done by the authors. The use of information stated in any manual should not be confused with its presentation within the context of a lab course. There are many similar DSP lab books which have used the information from TI manuals.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book has problems
Wiley really fell down hard publishing this book. It obviously was not peer-reviewed for accuracy. There are numerous errors in the book, gross errors due to improper generalizations in the math, and lack of proper derivations or descriptions/references on how the claimed equations were arived at. In one case, I could find no other literature that made a similar claim and could not derive the claimed result. Coding the example showed that it did not work. There is no C code in the book, so the title is a bit off. I did like the collection of information despite the front cover. There are other better books that cover this topic. The books web site is also lacking (what was Wiley thinking when the published this book???).

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written
The title of this book does not reflect its content. There are a few program segments in C and one segment in an unspecified assembler. But neither of them can be specifically attributed to numerical methods or DSP.The reader is also referred to a web site, which includes Mathematica andMathcad documents, which are not what the title suggests.

The subtitle, practical application in signal processing, graphics, video programming andscientific applications, leads the reader to believe that selected problemsin this areas would be presented and discussed. The reader will bedisappointed to find an incomplete collection of little related topics puttogether in an unrecognizable order.

Other annoyances include formulasand equations with mysterious letters and symbols; no examples are given tosupport the presented theories; and finally, the most relevant informationto numerical methods in the entire book can be found in the 3 appendixes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Error Ridden
Wide scope (too wide?), but uneven. E.g. Ohms law is introduced on p. 69. But the biggest problem is the large number of errors, at least in the early sections. I got up to p. 20, lost confidence in the book, and returned it. Too bad, could have been useful, but it's better to buy a couple of reliable books with reduced scope. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good DSP book for practical engineers
The book pays attention to real problems in DSP implementation with C and assembly code combined with hardware examples such as a data acquisition board including a schematic printing, which can help you to understand the integration of the whole system, and this is important for beginners.

Not like most of DSP books emphasizing on mathematical equation deductions such as FFT etc, which is easy to find in other DSP book such as Alan V. Oppenheim etc's "Discrete digital signal processing", the book emphasized on DSP implementations by using C and giving good explanations, and assembly subroutines such as key FFT core algorithm if necessary, which is quite common in DSP engineering practice.

As to the mathematical prerequisite, the author does claim that the knowledge of first-year calculus and understanding of microcomputer and programming are helpful. However, for any in depth understanding of such topics this is very normal and basic and by no means a picky requirement. You can not claim that the first-year calculus means advanced math in general!

The case studies in the book are running in an x86 microcontrollerbased system board, which is not popular today. However the corresponding C code is general, and still you can learn something from that assembly subroutine.

That DACQ board mentioned in the book might not be available right now considering that the book is written 8 years ago, in addition, the schematic printing is too small to view easily.

It might be good have some case studies in control applicatiions which are now more and more popular in DSP application in industry. However, this is a general problem for almost all published DSP books.

Anyway, I will recommend this book for practical DSP application person or embedded system programmer who want to know more on the practical side such as programming and system integrationother than only theory.Compared with most DSP books published, this one is still very unique and much better in introducing hands on techniques.

I really hope that the author can update this book for a new edition.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't live up to its press
Level of content is inconsistent; going from some basic paragraphs to advanced material, with no explanation/bridge in between. "Assuming no background in high level math" is less than accurate (unless you justwant to use the formulas and not understand what's going on). Lookelsewhere if you want a self-study book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars There is more to this book than just plug-ins
I purchased this book directly from the author at a seminar. I was not expecting the book to contain some of the information it leads off with - namely, the fundamentals of audio. When I got to the meat of the book, I found that his description of some of the plug-ins were not limited to the plug-ins themselves from the individual manufacturer, but there was also a very informative, detailed introduction to that *type* of plug - dynamics, modulation, reverb, etc. Also covered are real-world examples of different scenarios in which the plug-in would be used.

Mr. Shepherd has written a wonderfully readable text on the subject of plug-ins for modern digital audio recording that will not be instantly out-of-date. The subjects covered are far higher-level, even though individual plug-ins are detailed. I highly recommend this text to any budding or experienced audio engineer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lives up to it's Title
I've only had the book for about an hour, but after paging through its entirety and then forcing myself to put it down until after work, I can tell you that this is a fantastic and unique work. Mr. Shepherd has written a guide which lives up to the title. Not only does he describe the features of just about all of the most important plug-ins, both native and accelerated, he has also written the most comprehensive, usable, and up-to-date guide to the tools and techniques of Digital Audio Production which I have ever seen. He gives loads of extremely useful information which I've never seen collected in one place. For instance, there is a great introduction to the concept of sidechaining and its practical application ("Side-Chaining or Keying" p151) as well as sections addressing concepts like what type of equalization technique is best ("To Sweep or Not to Sweep" pg 131). This is in addition to excellent treatments of the more basic concepts (sampling, bit-depth, metering, etc) required when working with digital audio.

I haven't even gotten in to the chapters about Convolution or Surround Mixing, but they look great.

My only critique so far is that he neglected to mention ImageLine's FL Studio in his discussion of host applications. I mention this because I regard FL Studio to be the best thing going on the PC side of digital audio, and I'd like to see it recognized by a wider audience. He easily makes up for this by covering FX-Teleport (p36) which I regard to be the second coolest thing going.

In case you are wondering, I have no affiliation with the author, and my only affiliation with the creators of FL Studio and FX Teleport is that I have paid for their software. ... Read more

Product Description
Although programming in memory-restricted environments is never easy, this holds especially true for digital signal processing (DSP). The data-rich, computation-intensive nature of DSP makes memory management a chief and challenging concern for designers. Memory Management for Synthesis of DSP Software focuses on minimizing memory requirements during the synthesis of DSP software from dataflow representations.Dataflow representations are used in many popular DSP design tools, and the methods of this book can be applied in that context, as well as other contexts where dataflow is used.

This book systematically reviews research conducted by the authors on memory minimization techniques for compiling synchronous dataflow (SDF) specifications. Beginning with an overview of the foundations of software synthesis techniques from SDF descriptions, it examines aggressive buffer-sharing techniques that take advantage of specific and quantifiable tradeoffs between code size and buffer size to achieve high levels of buffer memory optimization.

The authors outline coarse-level strategies using lifetime analysis and dynamic storage allocation (DSA) for efficient buffer sharing as one approach and demonstrate the role of the CBP (consumed-before-produced) parameter at a finer level using a merging framework for buffer sharing. They present two powerful algorithms for combining these sharing techniques and then introduce techniques that are not restricted to the single appearance scheduling space of the other techniques.

Extensively illustrated to clarify the mathematical concepts, Memory Management for Synthesis of DSP Software presents a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art research in DSP software synthesis. ... Read more
