Product Description
The 21st century promises no shortage of technological advances that will permit people to rethink how they used to go about tasks long a part of life, from doing laundry to desigining a typeface. Mark Batty Publisher proudly announces the first two titles in an ongoing series that will track, respond to and engage with the issues and possibilities of 21st century graphic design and typography, culling information from the sources that create, implement and make popular these innovations. These first two books, dot-font: talking about fonts and dot-font: talking about design, comprise essays written by John Berry on the respective topics.Whether discussing the work of Matthew Carter, Gerard Unger or Sumner Stone, or investigating the page layout of voter pamphlets or the use of letterpress in the digital age, Berry's understanding of the past provides the perfect context to take issues of design and typography into the future.John Berry is a graphic designer and the former editor of U&lc. He has written extensively on design and typography. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Font Book.
dot font is a good book if you like reading about typography and the history of letters and the people that make them. i think all of what is in this book has been culled from the internet, so you may even be able to find it all for free if you dont mind searching a little. it's a nice book, well written, well designed. there are other books in the series as well, and i will probably pick those up for casual reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Literally, Reading History
John D. Berry may be categorized as an editor, book designer, and expert on typography (and his credentials certainly substantiate that slot!), but to this reader Berry is a contemporary philosopher. He just happens to use as his tools for investigating human thought and idea extension the wide variety of fonts and their uses in the media as a means to explore human response and even human behavior.

The casual reader may not be attracted to a book about fonts (or, in older terms, typeface): the topic sounds dry and sterile and far too narrow to warrant buy his book to peruse with care. The book is most assuredly a 'Must' for graphic designers, artists who incorporate words or word fragments into their art, and for those who evaluate the final presentation of any book, whether a child's story, and adult novel, an art book, or newspapers and magazines. The surprise is the book's affinity for all readers fascinated with language and its development visually as a means of looking at the times!

What Berry achieves in this fascinating collection of essays culled form his website Creativepro.com is a history of the written word focused on the appearance of the constituents (read letter appearance) developed and used from as early as the 18th century to modern times. The old arguments, such as the long enduring one as to whether serif or sans serif (footed or non-footed) typeface/fonts produce faster and easier reading, are explored with both humor and scientific approach. But the essays all offer an entirely new ways of thinking about how the appearance of what we read plays on our retinas and hence our brain entries and the whys of that phenomenon.

Mark Batty Publisher continues its quest to offer alternative books that have to date not found a friendly home for promotion and their library of now published works is an impressive one. As one would expect from a publisher with this goal, the design and layout of each of the books is of the highest quality, allowing for visual examples to clearly add to the written word without crowding the succinct manner in which the essays are meant to be read: the converse is than when their books are about visuals (as in the excellent New Orleans Bicycles) the written word embroiders the photographs instead of submerging them in bloated commentary.Their books are works of art in and of themselves and this book 'dot-font: Talking about Fonts' is an excellent example.Fascinating reading!(...) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!
I bought this book initially to learn how to manually write letters for my son's scrapbook that I have started. I am a graphic designer so I'm always looking for interesting fonts, but they are always electronic. Long lost is the art of actual writing or drawing with a pencil or marker for me. When I saw this book, I picked it off the shelf at a local art store mainly because of the beautiful designed cover, not realizing what it was at first. Then as I flipped through the pages, I realized it could also serve for both my scrapbook needs, but also to be used for creative bulletin boards for my classroom. I recently started teaching high school graphic design and have been in need of creative things for my walls. I put the book down at the art store, opened up my iPhone and immediately ordered it online (due to cost). I've only practiced a few things so far, but I'm enjoying getting back to being artistic. I'd recommend this to anyone, the directions are simple and easy to understand and even give you pages to practice. From a design standpoint, it's well done. From a beginner artist, it's a must! Definitely worth every penny! Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and versatile book
This workbook is great for both scrapbookers and art journalers who wish to use handwriting in their work. It's imaginative, showing you multiple ways to use each suggested font, with lots of examples and suggestions. I'm very glad to have it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent content, but I wish the overall size was larger
This is a niggle based on my own aging requirements; while the book's content is excellent and as a historical reference to the development and usage of type it's very, VERY good, the overall size of the book make the type size used difficult for me to read even with glasses. It's not a lay-flat binding, either, so the occasional two-page spread is all but destroyed. I'm glad I bought it but I would have wished for better binding and a larger size overall.

Beyond that, the content is well worth the purchase price if you are a graphic designer or just obsessed with typography (and I am both); from hieroglyphs to Illustrator, the theory and history of type design and those who design them is well represented. If you enjoy type, this will find its way onto your bookshelf. I just wish the publisher had taken some of the principles to heart and printed the book larger :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
Honestly, I recommend this book to anyone who has a slight interest in Typography. Tells the whole history of typography and has great quality pictures, I loved the insights on different contemporary designers. Just stop wondering and buy it. This is one of my most treasured books in my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for all graphic designers
I'll admit it.I'm a font whore. As a graphic designer, it's our job to visually tell a story.Fonts and typesetting are our friends. We easily become obsessed with fonts.

//Font. The Sourcebook// details the origins of writing - from the early Greek scrolls to the first books produced on a Guttenberg press to modern-era computer programs, such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. The book highlights several printing techniques:the wooden press, the Stanhope Press, lithographic printing, linotype machines, and steam presses, which //The Times// was the first to use.The works of Ed Fella, Will Hill, Alexander W. White, David Pearson, Sam Winston, Peter Black, to name a few, are showcased in the book.I especially enjoyed the back of the book, which goes over the anatomy of type.

Every graphic designer should lay the foundation of their work by understanding the history of what they are about to visually create.A must-have...and one that will forever be within arm's reach on my desk. ... Read more

Product Description
Practical Font Design has been a surprisingly successful book--considering the small size of font design community. It this original book, David takes the reader through the process of actually producing a font in FontLab (currently using FontLab 5). The approach is deeply personal, but it is focused on sharing techniques learned through almost two decades of font design. Most font design books are all about character shapes and historical styles. This one is about actual font construction, going through the development of a font from concept to release.
In this second part, David continues the practical approach to font design shared in the original book by producing 13 fonts: nine styles of an oldstyle serif and four styles of a companion sans. This new set of font families is designed for book design, In fact, they are used as the fonts to format this book in its printed form. This is no academic work, but a chance to share a practical step-by-step process of font family production. You may not agree with the choices David makes, but you will be led deeply inside the process where you will find it simple to make your own choices. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like this book more, but the writing is dry.
I really did want to love this book - I liked a Medjugorje book written by the same author. However, this is very dry reading, IMO. As important as the content is, I had to push myself to read it and didn't finish the book. Also, having no information on the visions at Lourdes, I had hoped it would have been organized better. The prologue that details the author's trip with her husband confused me about Lourdes. I don't like to be thrown into a story without any information or context. You're better off skipping this section and coming back to it later.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book(s)!!
I highly recommend Elizabeth's books - Lourdes, Shower of Heavenly Roses and The Fruits of Medjugorje! They all grabbed my interest right from the beginning and held it till the end. I found them very interesting, inspirational and easy reads. Looking forward to future books by the author. EXCELLENT books and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lourdes: Font of Faith Hope and Charity
My wife and I will forever be grateful to Ms. Ficocelli for her excellent work on Lourdes. After having read Font of Faith Hope and Charity during our Church's Book Club, we were inspired to take a Pilgrimage to Lourdes and even worked with the North American Volunteers to host a Virtual Pilgrimage for our Parish. This quick, informative, andmoving book not only brought a couple from Los Angeles to Lourdes, it brought the Lourdes experience to more than 600 parishioners as well as hundreds ofschool children, elderly, sick and imprisoned people needing Our Blessed Mother's healing love and guidance to her Son. This is the very definition of a "good read"!

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last!
This is the best book I have ever read on Our Lady of Lourdes. First, the author corrects numerous factual inaccuracies that have been perpetuated over the many years concerning St. Bernadette's personal history as well as the origin of this miracle itself that took place so long ago. Second, the author refreshingly holds no bias in simply providing her own account in experiencing the still-ongoing miracles of Lourdes among the millions of pilgrims that journey there each year. Third, there is that wonderful catholic touch of mystery and mysticism in her writing - an intangible one might say that lends both credibility and substance to this definitive analysis of Lourdes. Last, and what I found most illuminating about this author's account is how she so poignantly and accurately connects the miracles/apparitions of Our Lady of La Salette, Our Lady of Lourdes, and the inevitable leap one needs to understand the ever-controversial apparition of Our Lady of Fatima: specifically, why is Our Lady often sad, weeping and warning us? A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to buy a book that is the real deal, so to speak, at a most affordable price. ... Read more

Product Description
'Name This Font, Volume I' covers 369 of the most popular and interesting uppercase, upright fonts in current use. It illustrates sans serif, serif, and condensed letterforms. The individual characters of the alphabet are shown in separate charts, and arranged in accordance with variations in their shape.

Name This Font - A Practical Encyclopedia of Letterforms' is intended for use by all who work with text and letters - graphic designers, computer artists, copywriters, printers, typesetters. 'Name This Font' is an invaluable new tool that eliminates the tiresome and frustrating search for a font name through hundreds of pages of font catalogs. This unique publication is extremely helpful in (a) identifying a font in any medium - book, advertisement, billboard, computer or TV screen, (b) finding a font substitute, and (c) selecting a font to use.

'Name This Font' is envisioned as a multi-volume publication whose aim is to illustrate the most popular and interesting fonts in current use. The first two volumes start with the uppercase letterforms; these letterforms are the easiest to identify, and, as the ones most often used in headlines, signs and logos, seem to be most important. Future volumes will bring lowercase and italic faces, numerals and symbols.

'Volume 1' displays sans serif, serif and condensed classes. 'Volume 2' deals with the decorative/design/display, script, and blackletter/uncial fonts. Each volume is designed to be used independently of the other.

Individual characters of the alphabet are arranged in separate charts, where just one letterform is shown, progressively, in all its variations. The letterforms in charts are large (72 points), making all details of their design easily noticeable. This original and highly-efficient arrangement allows the user to find the name of a given letterform in a matter of seconds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a delightful summer mystery for the young, and the young at heart
Patrick Doyle's "The Castle Tower Lighthouse" is a delightful summer mystery for young readers.Patrick Doyle presents the tale of Edgar Font's Hunt for a House to Haunt (making the full title of the book a real mouthful, but a fun one). The book is fun through and through, down to a puzzle at the end for the reader to solve on their own. It's cleverly illustrated, and its tale-within-a-tale is engaging.

Doyle uses the conceit that the story has been given to him by Edgar Font, as recorded by Edgar Font's two grandchildren, Audrey and Garrett.Edgar Font is a capricious adventurer, somehow past his prime yet ready to take on anything--including his two grandchildren, who are precocious but overall _unadventuresome_ children.Edgar's answer to that is to drive them into the waters of adventure by making them integral to his summer's quest.

Edgar introduces them to the world of ghosts, as he outlines their intended journey--while not dead yet (and it's hard to imagine such a formidable person "passing on"), he wants to find a singular place to live out his eternity. The grandchildren are appropriately skeptical to begin with, but by the end of the book they're reasonably well converted--all in the span of a day.

It's a quick read, much more fluid than "wandering around the house and picking up clues" might suggest. The characters are fleshed out, for the age range, and I expect we'll learn much more about them in further installments, as they learn more about themselves. We're not told where they'll adventure to next, but there's a photograph marked, "Exploring the site for Adventure Two" in the back, and an arrow showing that it's "just over yonder".(And a glimpse at Amazon tells us that Adventure Two takes us to The Fakersville Power Station; and that that will be available July 1st!)

I heartily recommend this for the young (it's marked ages 9 and up), and the young at heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Start Your Adventure Today
If I told you this story began with an old man pointing the way to a secret door in a dream, what would you say? Yet, that is exactly how Patrick H.T. Doyle discovered the leatherbound journal in the attic of his home. Inside he read the most wonderful stories, each describing the adventures of a trusted grandpa and two adoring grandchildren, Audrey and Garrett. Through his imagination and incredible storytelling abilities, Doyle has delivered a new kind of adventure book, that is destined to be a favorite for young and old alike.

The last time the kids had seen grandpa was three years earlier, at their Mother's funeral. Garrett remembered his bushy moustache and that he lived in a tree house on an island somewhere. Audrey recalled the fantastic stories he had shared during their visits. How he explored pyramids in Egypt, surfed waves in Australia and climbed Mount Everest, twice. Yes, Grandpa was a true explorer. Now everyone referred to him as eccentric. Which of course to the kids simply meant he was weird. Now they would be spending the entire summer with him at his apartment in The Sterling Oaks Retirement Village. Translated into kids english - "boring, boring, and boring." But, they could not have been more wrong. This would be a summer they would never forget.

Sir Edgar Font has lived an exciting life and certainly intends to continue his quirky ways after he passes from this world into the next. So begins his search for the perfect house to haunt. The Retirement Village was filled with lonely, bored ghosts and that was no place for him. As grandpa explained his plans to his wide eyed grandchildren he was met with skeptisim and questions.
Later that night after having seen a ghost at the dinner table, they exited down the emergency steps and made their way to the "Adventure Wagon." This wagon will take us anywhere we want to go and our first destination will be the Lighthouse, grandpa told them.

The Castle Tower Lighthouse holds many puzzles, secrets, and mysteries, each waiting to be discovered. Beyond all the games there are life lessons being taught through out this book. Dealing with the loss of someone you love, like the death of Audrey and Garrett's Mother and learning to look beyond that which seems obvious, are only two of the many wonderfully woven stories that both entertain and teach. As a companion and beautifully complimenting the adventures within the book, the website offers many hours of fun and puzzle solving.

Patrick H.T. Doyle has delivered a truly new and refreshing alternative to the books currently available. This could easily be a review filled with all the raving adjectives, because each and every one has been earned. Excellent, engaging, suspense filled, action packed, I could list them all. However, it is far more important to point out that this is not just a children's book or for young adults. For all the parents out there who have searched for a great story to read to your children before bed, this is it! I have no doubt, children everywhere will be asking, "is it bed-time yet"? For all the children looking for an affordable book that is entertaining and fun, here it is! And lastly for all the adults who enjoy discovering a new author that has truly created something different, look no further, you have found it! And with the second book in this adventure series available in July, this is the perfect time to get introduced to Sir Edgar Font.

Happy Reading!

An enchanting story that introduces Garrett and Audrey to some pretty wondrous adventures that delivers a positive message to children everywhere.Garret and Audrey are brother and sister, and as they head to China to join their father they have no clue of the great adventure that lies ahead. The children usually stay with their aunt while their father is off on his trips as an architect but this year the children's aunt is asked to join their father for the summer in China. The children end up spending most of their time with Edgar Font, their grandfather.Edgar is on a quest of finding the perfect place to haunt when he passes away, and their summer adventures begin, their adventures will be remembered a lifetime.Their first adventure begins at an abandoned lighthouse which is full of puzzles, ghosts and mystery. As their adventure continues through the lighthouse they must rely on everything they know and the lessons that they have learned along the way to ensure they will make it out without being harmed.

The Castle Tower Lighthouse is a children's book that everyone will fall in love with no matter your age.The author writes with such skill that lights an imaginitative spark in the reader. The illustrations are absolutely wonderful and the message the story delivers is of a positive one. This is sure to be a series you will want to keep and treasure for years to come.I intend to collect each in the series for my grandson to enjoy, which I am sure will ignite another book lover in our family.I cannot wait until Edgar Font's Hunt For a House To Haunt Adventure Two: The Fakersville Power Station comes out in July.I am ready to enjoy another great adventure with Edgar Font on his search for the perfect place to haunt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference
This book is an excellent reference for every font you could imagine. It has everything from serif and sans serif to blackletter, display and graphic fonts. Fonts are categorized according to style and along side the sample of the typeface is the designer, foundry, weights and other info. The categorization of the fonts is a lesson in itself with categories I didn't know existed. It also has some information on font in the front. A great reference for anyone.

2-0 out of 5 stars buy a magnifying glass
This book was very disappointing. I needed different fonts to use in art projects and it is very difficult to see the fonts in this book. The whole book is in miniature, not the size of a normal reference book.

2-0 out of 5 stars This is not a encyclopedia
The Encyclopedia of Fonts it's something like a catalog. I think It will be more informative and deep about fonts

3-0 out of 5 stars Font Book
This book is full of fonts. It truly has every font I have ever seen in it.However the font sizes are so incredibly small that they are hard to actually look at.I wish it were printed a little bigger, but it is overall helpful.

2-0 out of 5 stars THE TYPEIS WAY TOO small
Very nice book that's just WAY TOO SMALL!!!, it's MORONIC to publish an encyclopedia of "anything" that measures 7x7 inches, serifs and other details are negligible.....it cannot be considered a definitive font reference book at this size, THE PRINT IS TOO SMALL!!!!,which is frustrating because that's exactly why I did (or you would) purchase this book. If they make the letters bigger it's a classic, at this size it's almost garbage. ... Read more

Edgar Font's Hunt for a House to Haunt Adventure Three: The Flint Island Treehouse is the third in a series of chapter books for young readers ages nine and up. The Font family, consisting of Edgar and his two grandchildren, encounter a young ghost who needs their help; they must put together clues and break an ancient spell. Product Description
While Fernando Ortiz's contribution to our understanding of Cuba and Latin America more generally has been widely recognized since the 1940s, recently there has been renewed interest in this scholar and activist who made lasting contributions to a staggering array of fields. For the first time in English, this volume of essays demonstrates his impact on a staggering array of fields. Much of his most challenging and provocative thinking--which embraced simultaneity, conflict, inherent contradiction, and hybridity--has remarkable relevance for current debates about Latin America's complex and evolving societies. ...
