1-0 out of 5 stars Errr...
I start reading the book as it arrives. In chapter 2, I faced with several problems.

The code to generate 2D recursive Triangle and 3D one does not produce the same result printed in the book.I look up online for source code for the book from Pearson, but they are all private (require login). I google for the source and come to several class website. Their code produce like what the book shows. I start to compare between the code, their vertex and orthographic view parameter are different. I go back to orthographic view => "detail in Chapter 5". Okay sure, no problem. Some material in chapter 1 can be skipped because they are just general knowledge (not even related to computer science).

Also, the text have many error in code. I don't want to list it out. Try the code out and you see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
This is an excellent textbook. I've just completed an undergraduate course in computer graphics using this text and it made the course much easier and more interesting. It clearly explains the content using appropriate examples. However, this book is for an upper level college course and is not suitable for beginners.

This is a very good book, it shows a lot of details of Computer

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for a class
This text is great for a class on graphics. The reader may find it challenging to do a self-study however as it assumes a lot of prior mathematics... some of which the reader would not have unless he/she has studied the field of graphics before. While the book does cover most of the math in it either directly or in an appendix in the back, the book's treatment of the material is decidedly utilitarian and lacks the depth or breadth that a true mathematical text would have on such material. It is for this reason that it receives only 4 out of 5 stars. As an aid to lectures in class, this book is very good, provided one's professor covers the requisite math needed in order to understand it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Crazy pricing
One day its $49, the next day its $70?
A new version is supposedly coming out next year anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars profound basics
For me as biologist, it is very important to have easy acces to information about R-functions and R-graphics. This is exactly what I found in this book, a very easy and profound introduction to R-graphics with all the functions needed for Traditional graphics and the more advanced Trellis/Grid graphics. As I do not need to create more complicated graphics then common histograms, boxplots and barplots with Traditional and Trellis graphics, I do not use the chapters on the Grid Graphics Model etc., but I guess that also this part is very easy to understand. Figures shown in the book are informative and can serve as examples how to present your data. Any R-functions needed are within can be found in the text.
Although you can find any R-functions for graphics on the web, this book, which goes through the whole process of creating graphics, is a very convenient tool to use. And this is also true for R-beginners, such as I was recently.

3-0 out of 5 stars Advanced grid coverage, thin lattice coverage
For the most part, I've stopped using traditional R graphics.I use lattice for most of my work, and I'm not writing new graphics functions.

By page count, this book devotes ~40% to traditional R graphics, 10% to lattice, and 40% to grid, in that order. The traditional graphics coverage is good, with interesting material on margins and other layout arcana. The grid coverage is quite technical, targeted largely at developers and power-users.The 10% lattice isn't especially illuminating. The grid material does inform the mechanisms behind lattice, and show how to mix grid and lattice. The traditional graphics material, does not apply to either grid or lattice.

If you're like me, this book isn't a good "first book".It covers the basics (which i'm comfortable with) and the complex (which i don't usually need), without a lot of middle ground, especially with respect to lattice. A good alternative might be "Lattice: Multivariate Data Visualization with R by Deepayan Sarkar" or ggplot2: Elegant Graphics for Data Analysis (Use R) by Hadley Wickham.

This book is well-written, and the grid coverage is thorough, but it could use a more descriptive title.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, not great
R is a free software system that runs under Windows, Linux, and the Mac OS. R comprises a programming language, considerable support for statistical computing, and a set of powerful graphics functions. Murrell's book is about graphics.

Graphics in R is done using various packages. One is "graphics", and its description occupies the first half of Murrell's book. But these days "graphics" is looking a little long in the tooth, and contains a number of infelicities that can't be changed because of all the old legacy code out there. Murrell himself wrote "grid" to fix this problem; "grid" is more general and better organized, but its functions are a toolkit for creating graphics; he's only built the tools, not assembled all the elements into simple and easy-to-use high-level plotting functions that "graphics" has. "Grid" occupies the second half of this book. Sandwiched in the middle is a chapter about "Lattice" (by Deepayan Sarkar); Murrell's chapter provides a brief overview, in part because lattice is built on grid, but lattice is better described by the online documentation, Sarkar's own book, and the books by William Cleveland, which introduced the whole idea of conditioned plotting of multivariate data. There's also an helpful (but brief) appendix describing how to get "graphics" and "grid" to work together, and an introduction to programming in R, which is too brief to be of much use of novices, and not detailed enough to help more advanced users.

What's good: Although R comes with on-line documentation, the style of documentation for R is to describe the inputs and outputs of individual functions, but not provide much in the way of a conceptual overview. Murrell provides such an overview. Especially useful are a set of diagrams showing the various coordinate systems, lists of the line types and plotting symbols, and tables of the graphics state parameters. You could probably puzzle this out for yourself with just the built-in documentation, but Murrell's book will save you time and headaches. Also, his website has all the code that produced the book's figures, which can be quite instructive.

What's bad: The description of the "graphics" package is incomplete, and the book's index is just terrible, which makes it hard to find things. Just as an example, if you want to see what the "mai" graphics parameter does, you should be able find it in the index under either "mai" or "par", a function which sets such parameters. There is a function index, but the functions are listed by package, not in a single, alphebetical list. If you know enough to find "par" under the graphics package in the index, then you get referred to a 30-page block of text. You won't find "mai" in the index at all. Nearly useless.

Overall: R has a very powerful programmable graphics system. This book will help you use it. This book could be more complete, and begs for a decent index. A good example of a well-written and thorough book about a computer language is Guy Steele's Common Lisp; the R community hasn't gotten quite to that level yet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for a Beginner
I am new to R and needed to create a particular style of heat map for a project. I spent 3 weeks studying this book's table of contents, sample chapter, examples on the author's website, etc. until the day came when I needed prepare my presentation. So I went ahead and bought the book. It was not what I needed and, in fact, I have not found it useful in the 2 months that I have owned it. Before the book even arrived I discovered the R Graph Gallery ([...]), which has a heat map that met my needs. My advice to those who are beginning to learn R is to be patient and use the many free, high-quality resources available on the internet for perhaps up to a year before starting to buy books. ... Product Description
Discover what you can do with R! Introducing the R system, covering standard regression methods, then tackling more advanced topics, this book guides users through the practical, powerful tools that the R system provides. The emphasis is on hands-on analysis, graphical display, and interpretation of data. The many worked examples, from real-world research, are accompanied by commentary on what is done and why. The companion website has code and datasets, allowing readers to reproduce all analyses, along with solutions to selected exercises and updates. Assuming basic statistical knowledge and some experience with data analysis (but not R), the book is ideal for research scientists, final-year undergraduate or graduate-level students of applied statistics, and practicing statisticians. It is both for learning and for reference. This third edition expands upon topics such as Bayesian inference for regression, errors in variables, generalized linear mixed models, and random forests. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Could be better
It seems that most introductory R books spend too much time with correlations and other modeling.I am still hoping to find an R book that deals primarily with data manipulation and descriptive graphics at an intro to intermediate level.Simply put, knowing something well and conveying it properly to your audience are often mutually exclusive.

2-0 out of 5 stars Should have bought "The R Book" Instead....
I got this book over Crawley's (The R Book) since the Amazon reviews said that this one was more organized than Crawley's.. however, even if that is true (maybe.. but Crawley's organization does not bother me), this book does not have half of what "The R Book" has, and their GLM chapter is a poor explanation of the function.

I highly recommend purchasing Crawley's book over this one. This one is not horrible, but was not sufficient for me. Lucky for me I have online access to Crawley's book for free, which has saved me in some spots, along w/ the online R-help websites and list serves.

This book definitely doesn't hurt to have though, but if you are looking to only buy one book, I would not rely solely on this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Statistics Course Materials
I purchased Data Analysis and Graphics Using R for an introductory course in applied statistics for the Biologcal Sciences. The book provides excellent discussion on the "how to" nature of applied statistics. The authors, John Maindonald and John Braun, address issues on valid use of statistical analysis and comprehensive examples on the use of "R" to solve problems. In order to get the most out of this book, it wold be useful to also obtain a good primer on "R", such as "The R Book" by Michael J. Crawley.

4-0 out of 5 stars data analysis presented through R
The authors have written a very good and somewhat unique book on statistical data analysis. The emphasis is on linear models. graphics and diagnostics for identifying violations of modeling assumprions. They build up from the basics starting with simple one variable linear regression and correlation and then moving to multiple regression.Special cases of linear models suchas polynomial regression are presened. They then move on to various generalizations. When the residuals are correlated they consider time series models for the correlation structure of the residuals.Other specialized and important problems such as repeated measures for longitudinal data are covered.

Logistic regression is also introduced and shown to be a member of a larger class of models called generalized linear models which differ from linear models in that the dependent variable is a transformation of the basic dependent variable. The transformation is called the link function. For logistic regression the transformation is called the logit function.Hierarchical (or multi-level)models are also considered.

There is also a chapter on classification and regression trees. The final methods chapter covers multvariate analysis including classifcation, principal components, and propensity scores. These are topics not commonly seen in a first course on regression or data analysis.

What makes the book unique is a thorough introduction to the R programming language and the presntation of every technique with examples in R that both motivate the need for the technique and the details of the implementation in R.There is a lot of R code given and references to a variety of sources for R that can be found on the internet. The book can serve both as an introduction to data analysis and a tutorial on the R programming language. This can be useful as a text for undergraduate and graduate students. It is also an excellent reference for researchers who want to use R and its application to practical problems. The book also has an appendix that shows the relationship between R and S and SPlus, highlighting the differences. The first chapter is a careful introduction to R and the last chapter covers advanced applications in R.

The graphics used throughout the book are excellently presented and there are even a few color graphs. This text has just had a second edition published but my review is based on the 2003 version which is the one I purchased.

Very good book for beginners and experienced users. Good presentation, hard cover, wide content...an outstanding book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Franco Zeffirelli Film as a Graphic Novel
Full text with drawings clearly based on the 1968 Zeffirelli film. It's engaging for reluctant readers, second language students, or those who simply enjoy graphic novels.Like the film, the graphic novel has R&J ON the balcony rather than Romeo on the ground and Juliet above him (as was Shakespeare's intent).Still, I wish I had a class set of these to help my students "get into" Shakespeare. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Loving it.
I am very happy with the book and am loving it. Got an earlier edition (I am thinking there shouldn't be many changes from the one I have) from the library and keep passing the due date! Lots to learn, especially very useful for me as I am a complete beginner in the Graphic Design field. Very informative and helpful for someone considering getting into the field. Great color and organization inside, and specially loved the interview pages. I definitely recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book rating
This book is very informative if you want to know about what successful graphic artists have done in the industry. This book is cover to cover interviews with successful graphic artists who have worked in the industry and have made their marks and become successful. It will not teach you how to do what they did and there is nothing technical in this book regarding graphics programs, however, if you are thinking of working in the graphic arts business as a full time career and you know nothing about it, this is a must read. Spend a couple of bucks on this book before you spend thousand learning to be a graphic artist and getting into a business that you know nothing about. This book is a must read for the aspiring professional graphic artist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arch graphic standards
Excellent book, price and sender. Book was as advertised and I would highly recommend buying from this seller.

4-0 out of 5 stars If the price is right, it's perfect for students.
Through 3 years I had this book while in school, it was an invaluable resource. As many of you know, the work done in arch. school is very design/idea based, and not necessarily rooted in a feasible final product. However, I strived to include as many true-to-life elements in my design, and this book got it done for me. Many standards and sizes, etc. that had my classmates scrambling around on the internet or looking through dozens of books to find were easily found in the index of this book. It eventually became a class resource for a couple semesters until people bought their own.

As a professional, many people's firms have a specialty or three. For instance, I work for a healthcare firm at the moment. However, as a student, you can run the whole gamut of different building types. Despite how far-out some of my designs were, the fact that they were rooted in current, workable building methods and systems that were detailed out helped me immensely when applying for jobs. Knowing the details and showing them in your design is not only good for your reputation, but good for ability as an architect.

I'd recommend this to many arch students if the price is right for you. I happened upon it at a time with the book (no CD) was around $80 or $90. Of the dozens of textbooks I still have, this is one resource book I know I'll be consulting for a while.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Informative Read I've Read
I bought this book on a recommendation from a friend, and let me tell you...I am not disappointed AT all.

It's very insightful into the process of how a graphic novel is made. I don't like to look at this book as a 'how to book' because they give you more than one way to do almost everything they go over in this book. (Writing a script, picking an artist or drawing it yourself, inking, coloring, text bubbles, etc.)

There are a few things I wish they would go more in depth on, such as ways to write a script and the speech bubbles, but that's a small thing that is DEFINITELY over weighed by all the good things about this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great overview of the process!
A good book presenting a general overview of several aspects of putting a graphic novel or comic together. Good for the beginner, but there are also insights to be gleaned by someone above that level. Several artists were profiled and had some quotes and I wish there was more from them. The layout of the book left plenty of room for more text, so why not include more from other authors/artists?
It's a solid look atthe total process. I found some of the comments about sequencing, angles, panels etc. especially helpful.
Common sense is not so common - as a former gallery owner I experienced this with people trying to present their work, and some advice Andy Schmidt gives to the would-be artist/writer is sure to help make those on his side of the table's lives easier!

5-0 out of 5 stars Graphic Grandsons
I have two grandsons with tremendous artistic talent. Both want to be cartoonists, and this book provides them with excellent advice. It challenges them and introduces them to methods they will need if their careers develop as planned.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
Andy's book is fun to read - but its most fun when he's dispensing advice about the craft and not the commerce. Although there is a killer tip on negotiating price that's about a para long and worth the price of the book alone :)

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY good book
This book is a welcome additiona to the other fine books on making comic art. I liked the artists bio and the sections on panel use/ pacing to make your story come alive.
Though NOT very technical the section on COLORING had alot of insights into using color wisely & effectively lends to the imapct of the story. ... Read more

Thank you to a fantastic seller - he actually met me at the library to give me the book, because my son needed it right away. Awesome service!

5-0 out of 5 stars book review
This is a bible for computer graphics. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn computer graphics knowledge base.

4-0 out of 5 stars suffers from bitrot
If you're a beginner looking for a book which has example code you can test out and try, either forget it or be prepared for some headache.

I can speak on my experience, I have a GNU/Linux system, the SRGP library which is used by this book only supports a display depth of 8bpp, which means you'll most likely need to reconfigure your X server to some extent - the examples/library will crash at higher display depths.

But there is no doubt that the techniques and principles explained throughout can be applied using other toolkits, as the book explicitly says that the facilities contained in the example libraries are common to many other graphics libraries.

A quick note on the quality of the library code, it appears to be pre-ANSI C and contains a few modern no-nos, which can lead to crashes.

If you're looking for a book to merely use as a reference or for theory then this is what this book is, and as one other reviewer said, you could probably just borrow a copy of the book and xerox the bibliography to refer to the papers it sources information from.

2-0 out of 5 stars Get Subcription to Siggraph Instead
Except for the chapters on raster algorithms, this book is just an extended bibliography. It has no material on texturing, for example, just a reference to the original paper on it. The math isn't that mature either, and the chapter on Perspective Projections is a pedagogical atrocity. Instead of buying this book, just go to your local univ. library and xerox the bibliography; then, lookup the articles on topics you're interested in.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
This book is a great book for general knowledge but all of the chapters that deal with talking about hardware is badly outdated. I got this book mostly for algorithms. I got much more then what I expected but most of everything I needed was there. Its a very good book for learning about line drawing, and polygon rasteration algorithms. Don't expect anything up to date like shaders though. ... Read more

Product Description

Graphic novels, long stories told in comics format, have enjoyed the fastest-growing sales of any category of book in the U.S. over the last four years. This modern renaissance of comics has produced a library of substantial works, whose subjects are not confined to superheroes or fantasy but are as varied and sophisticated as the best films and literature.

Graphic Novels presents an accessible, entertaining, and highly illustrated guide to the diversity of contemporary comics in book form. Featuring striking graphics and explanatory extracts from a wide range of graphic novels, the book examines the specific language of the comics medium; the history and pioneers of the form; recent masterpieces from Art Spiegelman's Maus to Chris Ware's Jimmy Corrigan; the impact of Japanese manga and European albums translated into English; how artists have overcome prejudices towards the genre; and the ambitious range of themes and issues artists are addressing, including childhood, war and survival, politics, the future, sexuality, and the supernatural.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be better...
My favorite part about this book is the fact that it goes so in depth with every piece they take a look at. I've never even heard of some of these comics, and I consider myself a decent conisseur. I suppose the only thing that might improve it is a look at some more non-English graphic novels, but we can't have everything, apparently.
I did appreciate that they kept further away from comic books and really concentrated on a graphically told story with the same amount of depth as a novel, rather than the corny and awful dialogue and storytelling coming out of some of today's comics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Show and Tell
This is a great primer on how and why to read graphic literature (traditionally known as "comic books") as well as an excellent catalog of the best works of sequential art (for an enlightening exploration of just what sequential art is and how it works, read Scott McCloud's seminal Understanding Comics). This attractively designed book contains detailed two-page entries on 30 works considered classics by the author (with whom I concur--at least on the ones I've read), and slightly less detailed half page entries on 120 others (see images at the top of item description), all of which provide sample pages and analysis of the storytelling technique employed by the creator(s).(Unfortunately, the text on the half page reproductions is sometimes too small to read without the aid of a magnifying glass.) The book is divided into chapters arranged by subject matter, which begin with a background essay on the history of each genre and contain a sidebar with a brief list of additional recommendations (totaling another 100 in all). The genres covered are Childhood Stories, Life Stories, War, Superheroes (of course), Fantasy/Science Fiction, Horror, Mystery/Crime, Humor/Satire, Historical (fiction and non), and Erotica.

While I highly recommend this book for people trying to familiarize themselves with the realm of graphic novels, the subtitle, "Everything You Need to Know," is not entirely accurate. The focus here is on English language comics. For a sampling of graphic literature from around the globe, check out The Essential Guide to World Comics by Tim Pilcher and Brad Brooks.

However, my only real disappointment was with the lack of attention given to some creators, and the total absence of others. The most glaring of these is the cursory mention of Grant Morrison, one of the greatest comic book writers of the past 20 years.Although Animal Man and The Invisibles are mentioned in two of the book's auxiliary sidebar lists, neither these nor any of Morrison's other works--which include Arkham Asylum, Doom Patrol, JLA: Earth 2, and The Mystery Play--are featured in the more in-depth two page or half page formats. (I can excuse the absence of what I think is possibly Morrison's greatest work, WE3, because it came out in graphic novel form after Gravett's book went to press.)

Several of the overlooked Morrison works listed above would have been much deserving additions to what I consider the weakest chapter in the book, "The Superhuman Condition." While I understand the author's desire to direct readers' attention to the wealth of non superhero graphic novels out there, this chapter--one of the shortest in the book--failed to mention several of the best examples of superheroic fiction. These would include tales featuring well-established characters, such as JSA: The Golden Age, by James Robinson and Paul Smith, as well as less traditional works like The Authority, a series created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch about an antiestablishment group of superhumans (although in my opinion, it was later writer Mark Millar who more fully developed the revolutionary elements of this series). In general, I think this chapter suffered from a too narrow definition of what defines a superhero story, depriving readers of the full potential of this genre. The addition of Paul Chadwick's Concrete, while not obviously a superhero series, would have shown how superhuman trappings can be used to tell very human stories that address real-world injustices. Similarly, I would have placed in this chapter graphic novels Gravett chose to include elsewhere in his book.Morrison's The Invisibles is mentioned under the heading of science fiction/fantasy; V for Vendetta, by Alan Moore and David Lloyd, is extensively covered in the chapter on mystery/crime, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, by Moore and and Kevin O'Neill, appears under horror. Chronicling the stories of 1) a counterculture cell of secret agents battling extradimensional forces of conformity (The Invisibles); 2) a masked superhuman freedom-fighter seeking to overthrow the fascist government of an Orwellian future (V); and 3) a band of characters from Victorian literature serving on Her Majesty's Secret Service in an alternative version of 19th Century Britain (The League); I believe these works should more fittingly be viewed as innovative takes--postmodern, dystopian, and revisionist, respectively--on the superhero genre.

Despite these shortcomings, I still think this book offers an attractive, well-organized, and exciting introduction to the world of graphic literature that is sure to hold many unexpected treasures for long time fans and newcomers alike.

[Note: Some of the best recent superhero stories were not included in this book because they were released in graphic novel form while it was already at press. DC: The New Frontier, by Darwyn Cooke, takes a new look at the Silver Age of comics (the 1950s and 60s) that is as retro as it is modern, and the critically-acclaimed Ex Machina, by Brian K. Vaughan and Tony Harris, is about a superhero who hangs up his costume after 9/11 to become the mayor of New York City.]

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome For ADHDers
I was looking for something to give me a firm history of this "new" genre of fiction and this proved very useful. The author seems to have a firm understanding of how the reader's eye moves about (especially comic book readers) and keeps his format as true to his subject matter as possible. He allows the reader to skip ahead, and around; dig deep in the subject matter, or theme; run rampant around the page. I couldn't recommend this book more for those who are unfamiliar with graphic novels, aspire to write one, or just plain enjoy the history. I loved the way that the author stuck to mature subject matter/ writers as well.

Fantastic!

4-0 out of 5 stars Only for those published in english
This book is a marvelous and very thorough reference book for graphic novels published in the US market.I am grateful since I needed a "taxonomy" of sorts for the newly available works, and the differently-themed chapters seem to group the various works into categories.

While the tradition of the graphic novel has been strong in europe in the sixties and seventies, many of those works have never been translated into english, and thus references to them are not included in this book.

I was pleased to see Hugo Pratt's "The ballad of the salted sea", a revered classic among european readers.I must conclude that the only reason it got included in this book is because it is now available in english.

I noticed Persepolis got included as well. That work as been "cinematized" recently, and shown at this year's Cannes Film Festival.[btw, the english set is half the price of the french set if you were to buy it in france, proof that the english-based publishing world dominates the world...]

Great book.Great resource.Great reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comic Lit Goes Legit!
Following his success of Manga: Sixty Years of Japanese Comics with another affirmative and considered guide to comics, Gravett now focuses on the phoenix-like return of the "Graphic Novel" that failed to live up to expectations in the early '90s. However, time has moved on and this book reveals how the medium has evolved dramatically over the past ten years. Gravett's masterstroke is to reproduce at least two full pages of sequential artwork, giving readers a real flavour of each title examined. Annotated notes alongside the artwork explain the material in a manner reminiscent of fine art books. Not only that but the excellent, if initially hard to follow, thematic cross indexing means there are endless ways of making connections between disparate titles such as Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (Dystopias) leads to Enkil Bilal's Nikopol Trilogy. Follow another link (Nature) and you get Jiro Taniguchi's The Walking Man. It's a close as the Internet on the page as you'll ever get. This book is perfect for librarians and educationalists looking to broaden their, and their students', knowledge and while many comics aficionados will be familiar with the titles, there are still a few surprises and the chapter openers contain many anecdotal nuggets. A perfect present to convert that literary die-hard who'd have to admit that comics haven't just grown up, but are now entering a self-assured and confident middle-age. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Call of the Wild (Man)
'The Call of the Wild' (1903) is generally considered London's best work. London himself was a wild man: drunk heavily, whored, jailed, tramped, poached, prospected - the bastard son of a wandering Irish astrologer. The novel is London's reconciliation with his own feral nature - he eventually killed himself in 1916 with an overdose of morphine - but not before he produced a prodigious amount of work becoming one of the most popular authors of his age. His work is at its best seen as the conflict between animal instinct and intellectual reason, what feels right vs what you know is right. ... Read more

Product Description

New in paperback, The Typography Workbook provides an at-a-glance reference book for designers on all aspects of type.

The book is part of Rockport's popular Workbook series of practical and inspirational workbooks that cover all the fundamental areas of the graphic design business. This book presents an abundance of information on type - the cornerstone of graphic design - succinctly and to the point, so that designers can get the information they need quickly and easily.

Whereas many other books on type are either very technical or showcase oriented, this book offers ideas and inspiration through hundreds of real-life projects showing successful, well-crafted usage of type. The book also offers a variety of other content, including choosing fonts, sizes, and colors; incorporating text and illustrations; avoiding common mistakes in text usage; and teaching rules by which to live (and work) by.

The book came within a week of ordering and in "Like New" condition just as it had been described. I would do business with Bookbyte again.

3-0 out of 5 stars bring a magnifying glass
Lots of information and examples. Unfortunately, the book is set in minute type- I'm guessing 10pt at best. You would think a book on typography would be a little more attentive to the "readability" of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good value and information
There is very valuable information in this book when it comes to website design.Graphics, of course, are a huge part of putting a website together and this book really helps us find ways to make the sites professional looking and user friendly.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing!
This is one of the prettiest books I own. It was also the most helpful book I purchased on typography and design. The examples and the book itself are gorgeous and the text explanations are thorough and easy to understand. Reading this book felt like taking an intro to typography course. This is as good as I could have expected it to be.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a workbook
I made the mistake of assumption. In light of trying to be helpful to those who are assuming the same, I should point out that:

The definition of a "workbook" (freedictionary.com):
work·book(wûrkbk)
n.
1. A booklet containing problems and exercises that a student may work directly on the pages.
2. A manual containing operating instructions, as for an appliance or machine.
3. A book in which a record is kept of work proposed or accomplished.

This was my assumption. This is not a workbook, nor is it a guide about how to accomplish anything. The book is a comprehensive and concise reference book inappropriate as a class text. I will say it is very interesting; and the examples are wonderful and entertaining for those who are interested in typography but not instructors.

...an unfortunate title for this book was chosen. ... Read more

Product Description
3D Math Primer for Graphics and Game Development covers fundamental 3D math concepts that are especially useful for computer game developers and programmers. The authors discuss the mathematical theory in detail and then provide the geometric interpretation necessary to make 3D math intuitive. Working C++ classes illustrate how to put the techniques into practice, and exercises at the end of each chapter help reinforce the concepts. This book explains basic concepts such as vectors, coordinate spaces, matrices, transformations, Euler angles, homogenous coordinates, geometric primitives, intersection tests, and triangle meshes; discusses orientation in 3D, including thorough coverage of quaternions and a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of different representation techniques; describes working C++ classes for mathematical and geometric entities and several different matrix classes, each tailored to specific geometric tasks; includes complete derivations for all the primitive transformation matrices. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great balance of theory and pragmatism
I was looking for a book that covered all of the 3-D vector math basics for game programmers, and came across this one. I mentioned it to a co-worker, and his response was "Great book!". After ordering and reading about half, I have to agree.

The book explains the concepts very well and takes you through the math required to derive some of the core concepts (like transformations). My favorite part thus far is that each vector or matrix concept includes the math behind the concept and also the geometric interpretation for each of the concepts. For example, I had never seen a geometric interpretation of matrix determinants and found that very interesting.

The diagrams overall are very helpful for the more visual person, although there could be even more of them. I liked the descriptions of mathematical properties that may not be immediately obvious and how they could be used, such as the table of dot product values and what they mean.

My negatives on the book are minor:
(a) The book could have used more practical examples explaining scenarios on WHY certain concepts are used. The text does a decent job of explaning usages, but more examples would have been nice.
(b) I was not too interested in the "C" code given the numerous libraries out there that already do the math. This was wasted space in the book, in my opinion, although may be interesting to some.
(c) There are no answers to the exercises in the book. Would have been nice to have included that in an appendix. The answers MAY be on the web site - I have not checked.

All in all, I strongly recommend this book for those wanting the basics of 3-D vector and matrix math with applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best intro to 3D math, hands down
The past week I've picked up about three different math books aimed for game programmers, which gloss over important math topics that a game programmer would most likely encounter programming games and graphics. The problem with the majority of these books is that they were too vague and/or just failed at explaining concepts clearly. It seems to be a common problem of trying to cover too much, and the authors quickly lose sight of the path and veer off-road.

3D Math Primer for Graphics and Game Development was my last hope. By reviewing the table of contents, it appeared to be aimed again towards those that were confident in the rudimentary concepts needed to understand and undertake 3D math. Yet, with nothing to lose, I downloaded the Kindle sample and was relieved that this was not the case. While there is only a short Appendix that reviews trig and related prerequisite concepts, the tone and approach the authors use to guide the reader is so incredibly friendly to those who may lack confidence in math. After completing the sample chapter, which covered the basics of the, 2D and 3D Cartesian system, I couldn't believe how easy it was to read and how well I was retaining the information, actually understanding every word that glowed off my iPad. Finally, it looks like I found a winner. The authors alone write with such confidence that just declares how well they understand the topic matter, and that they know, better than anyone, how to teach this material to virtually anyone of any skill level.

It's probably best if you are confident in at least trigonometry and basic algebra before reading. If you need to go over these concepts quickly, go to [...] and view the trigonometry videos. After you have your trig refreshed, dive into this book and you'll be sure to be ready to tackle any game or graphics related programming problem with confidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great foundation for 3d game programming
I have been trying to learn game development and programming for almost a year as a hobby and can kind of get by knowing different concepts and properties. I thought this book would really help me understand concepts at a deeper level and allow me to use critical thinking to solve problems using these "basics".

Some parts of the book were really fast-reading, while others slowed me down to a halt with the math and programming. There were two parts in the book that it was getting hard and I had to skip to the next chapter where it wasn't quite as deep. the last chapters on matrices and quaternions were the two that stick out in my mind.

It is great that it gets into more detail with those areas, but a little frustrating if you haven't studied very much linear algebra. I will be re-reading those sections again after a little time has passed.

It covers matrices, vectors, and rotations in more details, while it skims over more advanced concepts such as binary space partition trees and inverse kinematics. It gives some good book references at the end if you are interested in books further.

It was a great foundational book in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Rush to Buy
This is a great book. It explains very complex 3d math problems in very simple terms with great illustrations. This is one of the few math books , that I could understand entirely including all the equations in one read. It is very rare.
I highly recommend this book, to any graphic programmer, cs major, ee major, hobby game programmer, iPhone developer. This should be the first book you should read. Anyone can call the functions in OpenGL or DirectX but to know what is actaully happening underneath or why it is happenening is very essential , otherwise you will be "Lost in Space", 3d space!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, great, great
I beg you: do not try to read *any* 3D Game Programming book without checking out this baby first! Really, unless you are a math major already graduating from college, or a very wise industry professional, this book will be useful. For example, I am a second year college student and I already passed ODE, Linear Algebra and Calculus courses, my university is one of the most wildly recognized in Latin America for being very strict on mathematics, physics, and chemistry, so I can say that I feel pretty content with my skills. Still, this book worked wonders for me. Yes, yes, yes, this IS very basic, no doubt, but It's not only about the brute knowledge on mathematics and geometry that's important for graphics programming, but also how to apply those concepts, and why these are important. We all know vectors, we all know linear algebra, but we really don't know how to do AABB vs. plane intersection tests with them do we?

I can't even begin to imagine how useful this text would be to high school students. I mean, to be exposed to this material before going to college can only be awesome. They have some basic knowledge of Linear Algebra before even dreaming to taking such a course? Nothing beats that! Well, maybe grabbing a real, fully fledged Lineal Algebra textbook like Grossman's, but nothing beats the fun of knowing you are reading a video game/3D graphics book!!!

Furthermore, I read Frank D. Luna's brilliant Introduction to 3D Game Programming in DirectX 9.0c: A Shader Approach, and had no problem what so ever. I even skipped the "Mathematical Prerequisites" part. THAT's how good this books is!!!

There's Dover Book for Ordinary Differential Equations, Grossman for Linear Algebra, Larson for Calculus, Sears-Zemansky for Physics, and there is Fletcher Dunn & Ian Parberry's for an introduction to 3D Math...

My only disappointment with this book is that it lacks the answers for one third of the exercises. Oh, and there are a few typo's here and there, buy honestly, what book really doesn't? (Most of the errata is published anyways in the book's site: [...]). I also want to leave this clear one more time: the book is basic in kwoledge, where it excells is in the very clear presentation of that knowledge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" Small Business Reference Book!
As an owner of a small business, this book is capitol!I have owned this book only 6 months have read it cover to cover. I am constantly using it as a reference guide. For 30 years I have been in the people service people service business.I am not nor ever have been a graphic designer of any fashion yet I do need to get many messages out to the public. I probably looked like a complete idiot before getting the basics through this guide. As a result of reading using this book, I have found that the media can go into logical structure that will be read more and understood better; less time is spent on doing the project and I have more time to be out in the public where I belong. The book is easy to read and understand. The ideas are can be implemented very easily and creatively.I would recommend this for any office that needs to reach client and customers with a message. It is a "must have" informative reference book."Hands off" to the authors ... for keeping it simple!

4-0 out of 5 stars Up-to-date graphic design process guide
Even though many books of The Complete Idiot's Guide series are how-to guides, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Graphic Design will not enable the reader to do their own graphic design upon finishing the book. This book is actually best suited to providing the background knowledge necessary to work with professionals in the field of graphic design, such as photographers, illustrators, printing companies, writers, and the graphic designers themselves. This would be an invaluable reference book for any small business owner or for an executive of a larger company that doesn't have an internal design department.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Graphic Design has a straightforward format that covers everything from basic artistic concepts to negotiating a direct mail package.Because the book covers such a large range of topics, the technical details are limited. There are two sidebar categories throughout the book that are especially interesting: Design on the Cheap, and Reverse Type (helping the reader avoid obvious amateurish design mistakes). As can be expected from a book about graphic design, there are many photographs of examples of beautiful graphic design. A good book for any small business library!

Product Description
The titles in our best-selling Design Brief series are highly praised by graphic design students, educators, and professionals worldwide as invaluable resources. Each beautifully designed, affordable volume offers a concise overview of a design fundamental the hows of design. But as most seasoned designers will tell you, a comprehensive education also requires an understanding of the whys of design practice. Graphic Design Theory presents groundbreaking, primary texts from the most important historical and contemporary design thinkers. From Aleksandr Rodchenko's "Who We Are: Manifesto of the Constructivist Group" to Kenya Hara's "Computer Technology and Design," this essential volume provides the necessary foundation for contemporary critical vocabulary and thought.

Graphic Design Theory is organized in three sections: "Creating the Field" traces the evolution of graphic design over the course of the early 1900s, including influential avant-garde ideas of futurism, constructivism, and the Bauhaus; "Building on Success" covers the mid- to late twentieth century and considers the International Style, modernism, and postmodernism; and "Mapping the Future" opens at the end of the last century and includes current discussions on legibility, social responsibility, and new media. Striking color images illustrate each of the movements discussed and demonstrate the ongoing relationship between theory and practice. A brief commentary prefaces each text, providing a cultural and historical framework through which the work can be evaluated. Authors include such influential designers as Herbert Bayer, L szl Moholy-Nagy, Karl Gerstner, Katherine McCoy, Michael Rock, Lev Manovich, Ellen Lupton, and Lorraine Wild. Additional features include a timeline, glossary, and bibliography for further reading. A must-have survey for graduate and undergraduate courses in design history, theory, and contemporary issues, Graphic Design Theory invites designers and interested readers of all levels to plunge into the world of design discourse. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars just what I always wanted
This book is perfect. I am using it as the required text for a senior-level course in theory. It's not too big, not too small, complete without redundancy and edited in such a way that discussions fairly jump from the text. Thank you, Helen Armstrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Graphic Design Theory
This book was purchase for use in a college course. It was is good shape, the correct book for the course, and arrive in the time the seller it would. All in all a solid purchase for the purpose of the purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Friendly, informative, well-designed

I heartily recommend this book for anyone seeking a friendly, concise overview of graphic design theory. The texts included are fresh and provocative. And the book design makes it a pleasure to read (particularly in comparison to the Looking Closer series). Each group of texts is followed by a section of vivid images called "Theory at Work" that explicates the ideas presented. I plan to reach for this book any time I need to stimulate my brain and/or my design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for catching up on design theory
This fresh collection provides design texts from a wide range of designers. Before I read this I felt a bit self-conscious about my lack of training in design history/thinking. Now I feel ready for any "design theory" conversation. ... Read more

Product Description
From its roots in the development of printing, graphic design has evolved as a means of identification, information, and promotion to become a profession and discipline in its own right. This authoritative documentary history begins with the poster and goes on to chart the development of word and image in brochures and magazines, advertising, corporate identity, television, and electronic media, and the impact of technical innovations such as photography and the computer. For the revised edition, a new final chapter covers all the recent international developments in graphic design, including the role of the computer and the Internet in design innovation and globalization. In the last years of the twentieth century, at a time when "designer products" and the use of logos grew in importance, the role of graphic designers became more complex, subversive, and sometimes more political—witness Oliviero Toscani's notorious advertisements for Benetton. Digital technology cleared the way for an astonishing proliferation of new typefaces, and words began to take second place to typography in a whole range of magazines and books as designers asserted the primacy of their medium. Designers and companies discussed here include Neville Brody, David Carson, Design Writing Research, Edward Fella, Tibor Kalman, Jeffery Keedy, LettError, Pierre di Sciullo, Tomato, Gerard Unger, Cornel Windlin, and a host of others. Over 800 illustrations, 30 in color. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother
Unless you are interested in the opinions of the author, the book is not worth the purchase price.Why?Illustrations.There are but a handful of color illustrations and the majority of all the illustrations are smaller than 1" x 1.5". Save the pennies and buy a history with illustrations that are in color and can be seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive book
First: it is great book full of a lot of examples and connections. And I love it and I can recomend it for everyone who wants to know something about graphic design.
But sometimes it lost connection between graphic and polictic, which is important in 1920s and 1930s.

2-0 out of 5 stars small book
The type (copy) and the book itself are really small and hard to read. It's more like a pocket size handbook.I should have done more research before I purchased; I made the inaccurate assumption that art/design books are usuallylarger in scale. I can't comment on the content of the book because the size of it was such an impediment I stopped reading after a few chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read...
for design students. The book gives a complete analysis of the graphic design's history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Variety!!
I purchased this for my girlfriend for her birthday because she's a graphic designer. There's very little description about each picture which is surprisingly nice. Your able to pick up on a lot of little details from the way the pictures are taken. It works great for her because she enjoys using a wide variety of things in her design work.
