Product Description

It’s the most creative how-to book to come along in years, and it’s now at a great price! These 100 great ideas will change the way do-it-yourselfers look at their local home improvement center—and revolutionize home décor. With a layout inspired by the store’s floor plan, this abundantly photographed guide tours all the different departments, from plumbing to hardware, electrical to lawn and garden, suggesting a host of imaginative ways to use what’s on the shelves. Many of the projects take advantage of the latest decorating trend, repurposing, where items conceived for one function are used in an entirely different, original way. With only basic techniques, craft curtain tiebacks from welded chain, transform glass or metal screens into coasters, turn copper plumbing pipe into candleholders, and much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I see how shallow I've been...
I've always thought that I'm pretty creative in the home improvement store. My husband usually has to drag me out because I stand there gazing at whatever it is for ages while envisioning other uses. But now I know that I've barely scratched the surface of the great realm of possibilities...I will have to hide this book from my husband, before he hides it from me!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun Ideas
I mistakenly picked this up thinking it would show samples of cabinet knobs for my new house.Instead it takes utilitarian objects like steel pipes or locknuts to make unique home decorations.
Some look arty while others look just makeshift. Some are easy while others require some handyman skills. This really will get you to thinking outside the usual decorating, store bought stuff.I particularly liked the back-to-back fence caps turned into candleholders. The towel bar plus "S" hooks makes a great mug rack, while the upright can light teamed with a radiator grill makes a dramatic light stand for an end table.
Give it a try, for some unique projects. ... Read more

Product Description
The new, second edition of this comprehensive book on the 68HC11 microcontroller from Motorola is unique in that it uses both the assembly language (for better hardware control and execution time) and the C language (for faster projection completion) to instruct readers in the basics of interface programming. Now featuring greater numbers of exercises in every chapter - plus new tutorials on the EVB and CMD11-A8 demo boards and use of the C compiler - this edition of MC68HC11-An Introduction utilizes a methodical, step-by-step approach to facilitate learning. Numerous examples are also featured throughout the book to ensure complete understanding of topics, such as: assembly language programming, I/O interface programming in C, memory interfacing, interrupt and rest processing, parallel I/O interfacing, serial communication port, SPI interfacing, and data acquisition. And an all-new chapter serves as a C programming refresher course, while the incorporation of flowcharts and/or algorithmic procedures for most programs aids in the reader in acquiring an overall understanding of program logic. Improved coverage of multi-precision division, updated LCD interfacing examples, discussion of the i8225 interfacing chip, plus detailed coverage of humidity and sensor signal processing is also featured in this edition. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars bloated
Considering the book is presented as an introduction to the HC11, one would think the author would cover the assembly language in more detail. Instead, there is only one chapter devoted to HC11 assembly. The author also includes a chapter on C programming. Given that most are going to program using assembly, the C programming chapter seems extraneous. To his credit, the author does include many examples, but proficiency in HC11 assembly is a must.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse Book Ever
Absolute waste of money. The Motorolla website has more information than does this book. The author has made many many mistakes on about 60% of his sample problems. DON'T BUY.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great code examples
This book has great examples of coding. The book will step through an example, then give more examples for you to try with solutions. The book's appendix is packed full of good references. It includes the assembly language op codes with details on the CCR changes, and ASCII table, review of binary and 2's compliment arithmetic operations, and more. This is a great reference or addition to any books you currently have. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars I passed
I passed the hardware exam on my first try. However, it did not have a great amount to do with this book.Although the book helped me feel confident about my knowledge it did not teach me anything new that I needed for the exam. The book seemed more geared to what Mike Meyers thinks a technician should know about PCs more than what CompTIA thinks a computer technician should know.

I am a little more uncomfortable about the operating systems test and will not rely only on the Mike Meyers book to prepare me for it.I will use the Meyers book in conjunction with A+ certification for dummies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just the Facts please
I would have appreciated this resource better if his ego was left out of the writing - too many opinions and too much humor. I don't care to learn about the personality of the author, I am more interested in the content, the raw knowledge for which I am paying, presented in a clean, professional and efficient manner.

This level of mediocrity will prepare you for the poorly written Comptia A+ Tests.

4-0 out of 5 stars No answer guide
While this book is very good at what it does, teach you about PC hardware to prepare you for the A+ exam, it gives self test exams after each chapter without providing the answers. If you don't mind thumbing through the chapter to verify your answers you will probably like this book. It's a pity rhis information wasn't included in the description of this book. I called McGraw Hill's customer service and they simply stated there is no answer guide to this book. You're on your own. The same holds true with Mike Meyer's A+ guide to Operating Systems. ... Product Description
Data security is an important requirement for almost all, if not all, information-oriented applications such as e-commerce, digital signature, secure Internet, etc. All these services use encrypted data. Cryptography is a milliner science that was the key to the secret of ancient Rome and a fundamental piece in the Second World War. Today, it is a star in the computation world. Several operating systems, data base systems or simple filling systems provide the user with cryptographic functions that allow controlled data scrambling. Modern cryptology, which is the basis of information security techniques, started in the late 1970's and developed in the 1980's. As communication networks were spreading deep into society, the need for secure communication greatly promoted cryptographic research. The need for fast but secure cryptographic systems is growing bigger. Therefore, dedicated hardware for cryptography is becoming a key issue for designers. With the spread of reconfigurable hardware such as FPGAs, hardware implementations of cryptographic algorithms became cost-effective. The focus of this book is on all aspects of cryptographic hardware and embedded systems. This includes design, implementation and security of such systems. The content of this book is divided into four main parts, each of which is organised in three chapters, with the exception of the last one. ... Read more

Product Description
William E. Aubuchon Sr. immigrated to the United States from Canada in 1900 at the age of 15, speaking no English and armed with only a fifth-grade education. Through hard work and perseverance, he established a hardware store in 1908 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. One hundred years later, there are over 130 Aubuchon Hardware stores located throughout Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont, employing about 1,100 people. This remarkable growth by Aubuchon Hardware can be attributed to the company treating its customers as friends and always making them number one. As William E. Aubuchon Sr. once said, "The business was founded on the principle of buying economically. We give our customers what they want--high-grade hardware at a price everyone can afford." Aubuchon Hardware never lost track of where it started, and today it still remains "all in the family" with over 20 family members currently employed, including the fourth generation. In Aubuchon Hardware, family members were an invaluable resource for photographs and historical information. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Aubuchon Hardware - A Slice of Americana
The "Images of America" series is a fantastic resource.I am very grateful that so many historic photos have been saved.
In a time, when Main Street America is struggling to survive, against giants like Home Depot and Lowes - it is wonderful to see a family owned business continue to thrive.
This was a fun-read and a nostalgic trip back in time.Nice to see that we still have a few places, where you can purchase a product that won't break within 5 minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars pictorial history
I happpen to work for this company and I know a lot of the Aubuchons and the Morans. They are a good company to work for and the owners are very easy to talk to and are very personable. This is a family run company and they truly treat their employees like family. The third generation is running the company (CEO) and the fourth generation is in charge of the internet while the 5th generation was just born. The book is very well done and the pictures reflect what they had to endure and how they lasted 100 years. That is quite an accomplishment in todays big box store environment. A fascinating look at what the stores were like for the past 100 years and how they have changed to keep up with modern retailing and how they have adapted to the 21st century. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My first purchase from Amazon but not the last one!
Excellent packaging, wonderful service.
I bought this book to supplement my reading and I am 100% satisfied.

4-0 out of 5 stars not a simple cookbook approach
The book is meant as a supplement or aid to IT Essentials: PC Hardware and Software Companion Guide (3rd Edition). I haven't looked at the latter, so I'm going to review this book based on that absence.

The book itself ultimately supplements the actual hands on labs offered for the Cisco Networking Academy, that cover the CompTIA A+ exam topics. This needs to be emphasised. If you aspire to be a credentialled technician, you really should already have actual lab experience. No doubt Cisco will say through their lab courses. Maybe there are independent labs that also train you for the exam.

So when an earlier reviewer remarked that the book disconnects from the other book, that may be true but misses the point. Just reading from books is not enough, even in principle, for an experimental credential.

Also, the reviewer said "how do you find the answers". She then said she used other A+ books and websites to do so. Inadvertently perhaps, while she meant that as a negative critique of this book, it forced her to do more than just trivially look up the answer in another book. The best way to answer the problems in this book is to already have used the various control panels, changed system registry values, tweaked the BIOS etc.

Plus, a lot of this book already has detailed steps for the above topics, with many screen captures of system control panels, where appropriate. While there are problems that deliberately have no single specific answer. Like page 209, where you are asked to "research a video adapter card". There are questions that then flow from this. The answers are a function of what you've picked.

Keep in mind what your ultimate objective should be. Not passing the exam and getting that credential. But being able to walk into a customer site and diagnose and fix a computer problem. Readers who want simple cookbook methodology of using this book and flipping back and forth between this and the other book are shortchanging their education.

1-0 out of 5 stars SET FOR FAILURE!
BOTH-BOOK AND LAB BOOK ARE SETUP FOR A+ FAILURE! THE BOOK DOES NOT FOLLOW THE A+ ESSENTIALS OBJECTIVES. SO MUCH INFORMATION THAT IS LISTED IN THE EXAM OBJECTIVES, THIS BOOK DOES NOT COVER! I HAD TO BUT SUPPLEMENTAL BOOKS FOR STUDYING. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless by itself
This lab manual may ask essenital questions, but how do you find the answers.I am presently using four other A+ certification books and various websites to answer the questions.I am not sure why Cisco had him to write the lab manual and two other authors two write the companion book. The authors of the book are David Anfison and Ken Quamme.I am assuming that they were unable to communicate - by mail, email or pigeons, so each just guessed what information the other would put into their portion of the writing project. What this boils down to is that neither item is useful to anyone. ... Product Description
Hardware and Computer Organization is a practical introduction to the architecture of modern microprocessors for students and professional alike. It is designed to take practicing professionals "under the hood" of a PC and provide them with an understanding of the basics of the complex machine that has become such a pervasive part of our everyday life. It clearly explains how hardware and software cooperatively interact to accomplish real-world tasks.

Instead of simply demonstrating how to design a computer's hardware, it provides an understanding of the total machine, highlighting strengths and weaknesses, explaining how to deal with memory and how to write efficient assemble code that interacts with and takes best advantage of the underlying hardware.

Additionally, the book has a unique emphasis on facilitating the ability to make real engineering decisions in industry when working with anything from simple 8-bit microprocessors in embedded applications to PCs and workstations. It demystifies the link between the behaviour of the code and the operation of the machine, while helping engineers and students to better understand the limitations imposed by finite speed and resources.

This book is divided into three major sections:
· Part 1: Hardware Fundamentals and Digital Design
· Part 2: Assembly Language Programming
· Part 3: Computer Architecture

The DVD accompanying the text will contain the following:
* source code files for all the code examples used in the text
* working demo versions of two different processor simulators
* video lectures from industry notables covering several of the major topics dealt with in the text. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My first technical writing "how-to" manual
I took my first technical writing job in August, 1987 and I've been a technical writer ever since.I came across a copy of this book at a book store in Kansas City, Missouri, shortly after the book was first published.(The book store may have been a Barnes & Noble outlet.)I bought the book and read it through and through while we were on vacation in KC and I found the "style" information (Chapter 19) the most helpful.I purchased another copy of the book just a few weeks ago to refresh my memories and I find the content still useful primarily in renewing the fundamental concepts of the technical writing I want to accomplish in my daily work.I agree with other reviewers' stating the book is best suited for beginning tech writers while I add my own comment about refreshment of wonderful memories of projects past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book that launched my career
This is the book that took me from recent college graduate with an English degree to my first job as a technical writer in the software industry. It shaped my approach to task-based user documentation and helped me hone my skills and advance in my career. I now run a technical training and documentation department (15 years later) and I still love this book! I lost my copy and I'm now reordering it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Out-of-date book about writing a user's manual
This is a 1993 book about how to write a manual for a computer application. If you are writing a manual, it will give you some helpful ideas. However, it was written, and published with a different title, before the Internet. It does not truly help you with communicating tchnical information -- just how to write a manual.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outdated in format but very good
The reason for my post is this:it gave me a good viewpoint and methodology on how to budget, estimate, and quote hours s ell as the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).

This book will tell you what it takes to design information concerning all aspects of software and hardware documentation. What it does, and I believe sets itslef from other books, is how to budget and plan estimates for software and hardware technical writing.

It will tell you how to write procedures, install guides, indexes, nice-to-haves, and user manuals. It will tell you what the SDLC is and what needs to happen at each stage; very useful to a novice (me).Great book for that and a good reference manual for those looking for tips on how to write; it will take you through step-by-step on how to deliver proper documentation... invaluable.

For its time, it was formatted in a way that was acceptable. If you can see past that and take away tidbits and chunks of information, this book is for you additionalto what I have said above.

It served my purpose of learning SDLC nuances; it talks of how to write and interview SMEs (very valuable to a novice), and give a great way to figure out how to estimate and plan a project.

I give it a B+ in 2006 times.I wonder what these knowledgeable authors would write if it was updated -- and they are very knowledgeable.

Enjoy

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellententry- to mid-level
This book is clear, readable and interesting (more than I can say for my other reference books on this subject). It uses not just examples of good doc writing and formats, but also examples of first-cut not-so-good ones, and contrasts them. The layout of the book is easy to use, and the content complete.

I have several other reference books on this subject, and this is the one I love. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This is an excellent book. It provides a comprehensive overview of microcomputer architecture. I recommend it to anyone who wants an introduction to the microcontroller field. Enjoyed reading it. Very informative. Learned a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Beginners Only...
Microprocessors and Microcomputers by Ronld Tocci provides an good introduction to the microprocessor world. It does a very good job at explaing what the different components of a microprocessor based system does and how they fit together. This book is not for someone who is resonably knowledgable about the subject (i.e. you have already built and programed a simple microcontroller or microprocessor based system). The more experienced need to find a title targeting their specific processor of choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good!
We used this as a textbook at the Univ. of Mich. Overall this is a good introduction to microcontrollers/processors. Authors kept discussion at the 'logic gates' level with an introduction to the Motorolla HC11 programming. Pace is gentle and just enough detailed for introduction to the subject. ... Read more
