2-0 out of 5 stars Try something else if you have XP
I was not impressed with the book. I did pick up a few small tips, however, it seemed that the author was a windows ME user and that is what most all of the book was written around. Very very little mention of windows XP. Wish the author and/or publisher had been more upfront and named the book "A little knowledge of Home Networking for Windows ME"...I would have known a bit more what to expect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ok, so I'm biased...
I can't imagine why anyone would not like this book. In the back of the book is an appendix to fixing networking problems. I wrote this appendix and was so confident it would resolve every peer-to-peer networking issue, I include my e-mail address for readers to contact me directly if, after following the appendix trouble-shooting guide, they still can not resolve their problem.

I know of no other book that offers such a 'free' and helpful service. If the book didn't answer a question you were seeking, the opportunity is made available to the reader to email me directly with that question.

What's not to like?

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing coverage of topics
Thought this book would be perfect A-Z reference for my home-networking needs, but alas, coverage of key topics was disappointing.Details and comparisons of networking protocols was scant.A common file sharing error, which i frequently experience was not covered at all (Windows File Error: 1026).Also this book recommends Norton AntiVirus, one of the most disappointing and buggy AV applications i have tried.

I found "Sams Teach Yourself Windows Networking in 24 Hours" to be much more informative for my needs (at a lower price).

3-0 out of 5 stars for home use only
THis book is only for home peer-to-peer networks that use a router or gateway type hub.If you are a SOHO or plan on using a server to do DHCP, NDS, etc.this book is NOT for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-use and bonehead simple route to home networking!
I always relied on the young, smart people in the office to deal with the networking challenges. I've read Dave Strom's columns for years now and when this book was available, ordered it the first week.I just went through the book's step-by-step guidelines for installing network cards, creating shared folders, sharing printers, etc. and when I finished, it all worked! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not a "How To" book
Falls short if you are looking for a step by step guide on how to implement a Home Network. Very little discussion about statis IP connections, using routers or printservers.

Primarily includes descriptions of various technologies as well as advantages and disavantages.

Troubleshooting section consists of recommendations to contact someone who knows networking and references to websites to go to for assistance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read: simple, yet informative
Mastering Home Networking, by Mark Henricks, is an informative and entertaining way to learn about how you can network your computers together.I must admit that I am not a big fan of technology books. But this one is a bit different. The author does not treat the reader like an idiot. But at the same time, the author does not treat the reader like a technological genius. The subject matter is treated in a way that both a beginner and a expert can enjoy. If you want to learn how to network your computers together, to enhance your business, make home life simpler, or just for entertainment, this is a great book that will take you through the necessary steps.

4-0 out of 5 stars very book book, but "networking by example"was better
I looked through this and about 5-10 other books on home networking at a bookstore. This book was my second choice, but I ultimately went for "Networking by Example" by Barry Press (which was especially helpful for people making networks with Linux and Windows in the same network).

The Henricks book was easy to follow, clearly explained, and had fairly good diagrams. But once again, I thought the Networking by Example was better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece
Truly the bible for novice and advanced home networkers.Takes a complex subject and breaks it down in a logical and orderly fashion for ease of understanding and implementation.

I have so many pages earmarked with paper clips for current and future reference, I am afraid to take it through airport security!

Cheap at twice the price! ... Read more

Product Description
The thought behind this publication is to continue to develop an active research community dedicated to explore how Smart Homes and Health Telematics can foster independent living and offer an enhanced quality of life for ageing and disabled people. As we begin to witness the effects of changing demographics on today's society we begin to appreciate that the increase in the number of elderly and in the prevalence of those suffering from chronic disease and disabilities are likely to further increase in the next two to three decades. To react to the needs of this cohort - to provide an environment in which the people can reside for as long as possible, whilst maintaining their quality of life and independence - is a widespread concern for all. As such, there is real benefit to further investigate the role of technologies to address these changes and subsequently offer practical solutions to support independent living. The editors feel that within the realms of Smart Homes and Health Telematics real, affordable and useful services can be developed which will have the necessary underlying technological and service delivery infrastructures to allow seamless integration into existing care delivery paradigms. The introduction of technology can provide a positive impact. However, it is necessary to avoid any detrimental effects if reliance upon technology within the home environment becomes so great that people will not leave their own home in fear of losing the support once outside of the home, or its close proximity. This publication focuses on promoting personal autonomy and extending the quality of life by considering including smart services inside and outside of the home.

Lavishly illustrated with full-colorphotographs and pictures every step of the way, Home Networking VisualJumpStart will help you get your network up and running more quickly andpainlessly than you had ever imagined.Amazon.com Review
Home networking isn't just for nerds with spare time anymore. Unifying the computers in your home on a local area network (LAN) makes it easy to share resources, like a fast Internet connection or a high-quality printer. Home Networking Visual JumpStart shows you just how easy it is to put your home computers (at least those that run Windows 98) on a network. Better yet, author Erik Sherman shows how to do a classy job of home networking (if you want) by concealing cable inside walls and installing flush-mounted wall jacks. It's a pleasure to see this emphasis on quality work in a market that's full of books by people who evidently don't think twice about having Ethernet cables run all over the floor.

Sherman's diligence extends beyond wiring. He explains the hardware--network interface cards (NICs) and hubs--that you need to make your computers (and printers and modems) talk to one another, and details the steps that you need to follow. Readers probably would've appreciated more information on dedicated home firewall products--they're a really good idea for homes that have cable modems--and enough home networks include Macintosh machines that some coverage of cross-platform networking would make an appropriate addition. But the extras that do appear in this book--including excellent sections on setting up networked applications and diagnostic utilities like Winipcfg, which usually are neglected in books about home networking--distinguish it favorably from its competitors. --David Wall

Topics covered: Designing and building a small network of Windows 98 computers (appropriate for use in a home or small office); how to choose and install hardware; and how to configure Windows 98 to facilitate the sharing of files, printers, applications, and Internet connections. A troubleshooting section goes into lots of detail on Windows 98's network diagnostics. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Find a newer home networking book.
This book was once very good but because it was written in 1999 and published in 2000. I would look elsewhere for home networking info. Many changes have taken place since this book was published -- wireless networking standards have changed, cabling requirements have changed, and operating systems have improved. My recommendation is SOHO NETWORKING, an excellent book published in 2003.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for New Users
After reading this book for about 2 hours and sitting with my PCs and parts for about another hour and a half, I had a fully functional peer to peer network up and running, sharing resources (and my cable modem!). At this price, you can't afford not to have this book. I even got an email back from the author within 24 hours (I had to thank him). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice book.
It's a very technical book and has the essential to the learning about home digital technology integrate, congratulations to the author.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better then the rest?
I do not yet have this one however the one I am currently reading with a class has Much to be desired. I am however A+, Network+, and MCSE certified so I have had experience with such prep books for certification, however it has now been several years.

What I can say is that the complaints given above (misspelling, random cut and past, word processor errors, etc) that appears to be the norm in this "new age" technology, companies no longer have technically skilled people writing for them anymore - without giving names, I can tell you horror stories at one manufacture I once trained and certified field technicians for. These days they are all taking the cheapest and quickest way out, regardless of the rubbish it produces, save a dime anyway you can is the new age CEO motto....I fear what tomorrow's "certified technician" will be like. Sales departments have been raping the technical industry of quality technicians (and leaving product grossly mismatched to the customers in their wake).

Perhaps one day technical departments will rise up and take back their technical companies and bring Quality back to their industry, only then will All benefit; end-user customers alike.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could, and should, have been better
I was eagerly awaiting this book, I had it pre-ordered since September, and can't help by feeling a wee bit disappointed in some areas.

Firstly, for a book that had the release date delayed, I still can't help but feel that they rushed it to print. There are MANY spelling mistakes, but they should not throw an experienced integrator - who would really be the bulk of the people using this book. Some of the diagrams are pointless (the wiring diagram in the security section of the sensors in series is laughable - it doesn't back up the theory behind it at all) and the black-and-white product photo's are uninspiring (but this is endemic of the All-In-One series and no criticism on the authors behalf).

I have a huge beef with the emphasis on 110V AC electrical standards, along with all the other US-based committees and organisations which litter this book.I am based in New Zealand and these organisations have no jurisdiction here, nor is 100V AC used.CompTIA promote their certificates as "International Vendor-Neutral".So whilst this info is useful for integrators in the States, either CompTIA are including non-international questions in their international certification (bad idea), or it is being included by the authors themselves (poor decision and irrelevant).

The last negative... I can't help but think that Helen Heneveld has shares in X10.Maybe a quick Google search can confirm that, but it doesn't offend me, more bemuses me, that this product, which I have never seen in my 4-year career in AV, is name dropped almost every other page!

Now on to the positives.

Make no mistake, this book is FULL of information. The amount of information that encompasses this field is overwhelming - and the authors present it, I believe, as best they could and that is more than satisfactory. There are some great ideas for those of us in the field for documenting our work in the way of tables (although alarm bells ring as to how relevant this will be in the exam, but I certainly appreciate it!).Also, the troubleshooting sections at the end of chapters are fantastic.Very repetetive, but that is the pure essence of troubleshooting - formulaic and efficient.I really hope that CompTIA use a lot of trouble-shooting questions in their exam, as I believe this has been well covered here.

Overall, I would recommend this book for the pure fact is that someone had to attempt one that encompasses custom integration as a whole, and the fact that it is based around a certification adds value to it.However, I'm not sure how well someone with less than two years experience in addition to this will do in the exam.I will be sitting my exam in the next couple of weeks so I will update my review accordingly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Passed the exam with a 90%
Bottom Line: This book was my only prep material and I passed the exam with a 90% (the exam is 97 questions, 90 minutes long, and you need 680 out of 900 to pass [the possible score range is 100-900]).

The pros: Basically the only exam guide designed for the current version of the test.Long and full of information.Covers all competency areas that are on the exam.

The cons: The book has a lot of mistakes in it.I don't necessarily mean incorrect information--more like proofreading and word processing errors.I saw at least 4 paragraphs where the paragraph had been copied and pasted twice in a row (like I would read a paragraph and then that same paragraph appeared "pasted" into the next paragraph). Also there are some errors in the review questions at the end of chapters--but relatively few when you figure there are over 350 review questions. Also the software practice exam had a couple of errors (like one question asked 'which of the following is not commonly used in a surveillance system?'.I didn't see any incorrect answers and the computer said CCTV was the answer but explained itself by saying that 'CCTV *is* commonly used in surveillance systems').

Also, the exam was *much* harder than both the review questions and the software test prep.

But that's almost making the book sound like it wasn't an asset and that's just not true.Bottom line: I used this book and passed on my first attempt with a 90% the day after I finished reading it.

If you are serious about taking this exam then get this book! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very shallow coverage
I consider myself the average home computer user, so I can read technical material when there is need, but don't do this for living. I can understand 90% of help instructions, but won't get to the level of fixing Windows registry entries.

I wanted to build my home network, so I was expecting something to complement what I could find on Windows menus. I am also learning Linux and wanted to network all my home computers together. The book review said it was beginner to intermediate level, and it covered Linux as well, so it looked like the perfect fit.

I was able to get this book used, like new, for $5, so there was virtually nothing to lose. However, it was an 'almost' complete waste of time. This book just walks you through Windows menus, with some touch on Mac, and 'see your distro manuals' in Linux. I would say it is good for someone who is completely new to computers, but then I wouldn't want to create a network myself if I were that new. Besides, there is nothing in this book that you can't get either through the Internet, or regular help menus.

The only reason I am giving it 1 star is that it covers some network cabling principles, and some TCP/IP basics. Both areas are timeless, i.e.; would take some time to be as outdated as the rest of the book.

One good learning for me; good books will never sell at $5.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book
Everything you ever needed to know about networking. A must have book in hte field of networking.Highely reccomend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice presentation of basics
The bad news is that I bought this book to solve a specific problem. 600 pages of text and appendices later, my problem remains unsolved.Nevertheless, this is a good presentation of the basics of home networks.I use a Windows XP Home OS.There was a lot of information specific to my OS.There were also custom comments for those on Windows XP Pro, Windows 98, Mac's etc.The reader level is self-proclaimed as "Beginning to Advanced".It would be more accurate to say "Beginner to Intermediate."If you want to learn the basic concepts of home networking and some "walk me through the commands of setting things up," this is a good reference. It is not an "everything one needs for troubleshooting problems" reference, though.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Helpful
I was expecting more due to the title. This book tells you what to consider for your network but does little to prepare you for the technical issues you're going to encounter. Its an OK book; but certainly shouldn't be called a "Home Networking Bible" as it really doesn't cover very much in detail...its a wide book but also a shallow one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy understanding
Even in the years of the dot com crash, PC usage and upgrading has continued unabated, driven by a still relentless Moore's Law. One huge area of this usage has been the home, and Plumley devotes her book to aiding you. Unlike an office environment, you have no IT staff to delegate the gruntwork to. Just you. And her.

So she carefully goes over enough technical detail to be intelligible and useful to you. Covering the latest Microsoft operating systems, with accompanying details on the Macintosh and linux. As an aside, the fact that she chose to include linux in a book like this speaks eloquently to its rise in a mass consumer market; no longer confined to server side applications.

On your network, she gives extensive information about having a wired or wireless setup. The pros and cons of both. Like a wired net being more secure against evesdropping, and usually having higher bandwidth. But being much more labour intensive to install, and often greater capital costs, compared to having just some WiFi hub. Certainly though, WiFi has been and is one of the bright spots in hi-tech right now, and Plumley walks you through its acronym-filled thicket.

She also does not ignore various other devices that can live on your net. Like a PDA or Xbox. Here is a chance for you to test for yourself some of the fabled convergence of computing and entertainment, about which so much has been postulated and invested by others.

Product Description
Home automation (also called domotics) may designate an emerging practice of increased automation of household appliances and features in residential dwellings, particularly through electronic means that allow for things impracticable, overly expensive or simply not possible in recent past decades. The term may be used in contrast to the more mainstream "building automation," which refers to industrial settings and the automatic or semi-automatic control of lighting, climate doors and windows, and security and surveillance systems. The techniques employed in home automation include those in building automation as well as the control of home entertainment systems, houseplant watering, pet feeding, "scenes" for different events (such as dinners or parties), and the use of domestic robots. Typically, it is easier to more fully outfit a house during construction due to the accessibility of the walls, outlets, and storage rooms, and the ability to make design changes specifically to accommodate certain technologies. Wireless systems are commonly installed when outfitting a pre-existing house, as they obviate the need to make major structural changes. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of date
Want to have a TV on your Mac?...Buy an external Video Card!! How smart.Talks about the Ipod, but the 2nd and 3rd generation, no Ipod photo, video, nano, etc. This book is completely out of date.Would not recommend it to anyone. Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK
Frankly, I'm not too impressed by most of the Mac OS X-centric books out there, and when I bought this, I wasn't sure that my mindset would change. Was I ever wrong...Thanks to the knowledge acquired from this book, my Macs now do far more than what Windows could ever hope to do.Don't get me wrong, for I earn my living with Windows, but thanks to this book, the Macs prove how uniquely strong they are. This is a fantastic book.Keep 'em coming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes me want to buy a new Mac!
I am not a hard core Mac guy. I just have an old iMac I bought on eBay for fun, running Mac OS 9, so i didnt really know if any of these would work.I bought the PC Toys and Linux Toys books from this same series (yes, I know I have too many old machines laying around,) and really liked them so I thought I might see what I could do with my little Mac in the basement.

Turns out many of the projects will work out fine on my OS 9 machine, although those of you serious Mac users with OS X will be able to do do them all without any problems.

I went straight for the "Classic Video Game Mac" project and am busily assembling a makeshift cabinet for my new MacMAME machine.

Sure beats having that machine sit powered down on a desk in the basement, huh?

5-0 out of 5 stars A very differnent kind of computer boook
A friend gave me this book and I was surprised by how different it was.I had no idea my Mac could do such cool things. The directions are not that hard to follow. The best part is you can show it to your PC friends and they are jealous!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great practical advice for fun Mac projects
Not only does this book tell you a dozen different cool things you can do with your Mac (control appliances, broadcast Internet radio, emulate arcade games, etc.), it goes into detail explaining the nitty-gritty of _how_ to pull off these projects. Mac Toys is full of practical information with specific product recommendations and step-by-step software instructions anyone can follow. I also appreciate the handy references to useful freeware and shareware that might otherwise escape your notice, as well as the coverage of obscure hardware products that are off the radar of most Mac stores. The book is a little pricey, but worth every penny. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Get A Free Catalogue Instead of this book.
I had hoped for a guide to designing and setting up an Automated Home. Instead, what I got was a catalogue of outdated data sheets and installation instructions for various X10 gadgets. If you know absolutlynothing about X10 technology, it might serve as a primer, however virtuallyall of the information is available at the supplier's web sites for free. There has also been a lot of improvement in computer interfaces andsoftware since the book was last revised (1996). Virtually all of thesoftware and computer interface chapters is useless, being superceeded byActivehome and the advent of the CM11A interface. For not much more thanthe price of the book, you can by a starter kit ($39 on sale) and actuallyget some modules and read the accompanying documentation for the same (butup to date) information!

It is unfortunate that there is so little inprint on applying X10 technology, from an application viewpoint. The gizmosare cool, but setting up a whole house for security and appliance/lightingcontrol is a fairly complicated task. This book did not provide anything tomake that task simpler. ... Read more
