4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent xhtml and css book
I purchase this book because I found it in the library.I have gone through four other books on css and xhtml before I found this one.I consider it more than a beginning book and it answered many of my questions. Unfortunately the book was missing a discussion on forms.Yet, otherwise it was a very good explanation of setting up all aspects of a page.

3-0 out of 5 stars get a bit of everything
This book came somewhat as a disappointment after I completed the excellent Sitepoint book on basic HTML & CSS called Build Your Own Website The Right Way Using HTML & CSS, by Ian Lloyd.

The back page of this book said it would be a tutorial book, so I expected that the majority of the book would consist of tutorials, but I was wrong.

This book doesn't seem to know which direction it wants to go:
a reference book, a theory book, or a tutorial book...so you get abit of everything.

1/3 of the book (7 chapters) covers theory: this section has no
exercises or tutorials at all, just examples to look at.

1/3 of the book covers the actual tutorials (3 chapters) where you
build a more advanced website.

1/3 of the book is a reference section.

If I wanted a reference book on CSS I would have bought an actual CSS reference book.
The same goes for theory.

Also, be aware of typos, I have found quite a few in the code.

On the plus side, the writing has the same casual touch as many other
Sitepoint books. If you want clear explanations without too much technical fuss, then you will enjoy this book.
If you have a done a basic course/book on (X)HTML and CSS, such as Ian Lloyd's book, then this book is a good continuation of your learning. It brings up more advanced stuff.

But, if you are looking for a hands-on book with lots of exercises, this is not the best book for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Few examples
Owners of the book can download a zip file. The zip file contains all the examples, which there are few. You only get 3 examples in the first 6 chapters. I don't really want to read and read and read, I want to practice. The examples in the remaining chapters mostly build on a site adding headers, columns, and footers. I'm not sure I'll get that far, I prefer to learn by doing, not by reading. Here is the breakdown:

Chapter 1 -- 1 example
Chapter 2 -- No examples
Chapter 3 -- No examples
Chapter 4 -- No examples
Chapter 5 -- 2 examples
Chapter 6 -- No examples
Chapter 7 -- 6 examples
Chapter 8 -- 8 examples
Chapter 9 -- 4 examples
Chapter 10 -- 7 examples

In all fairness, the reading chapters do teach a lot, and give the foundation for the practice parts that come later.

I don't know if I will keep the book. The price point is fair but I'm having trouble following along without seeing any examples..

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
An Excellent and very informative book. Not only does it have a complete list of CSS 2.1 compliant listings, property by property , but practical use and examples that make it easy to understand and apply. You can't beat Amazon's price. I purchased this and "The CSS Anthology" for the same price as one of the books at BN or Borders. AN Excellent Addition to the Web Programmers Library!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction and overall rounded lessons, but lacking in the advanced department
Its a great book, but doesn't push very far for creativity. Some books smash the information through to you in such a way like its picture book... extreme use of examples. I'm more of the "just give me the methods and information clearly, and lemme fiddle around with my own creativity." The entire book I was thinking to myself "how can I take these examples and convert them into actual web page designs I want to make?"

Despite that, there is still a lot of information crammed into it. It has abeefy index, but then again, I wish it had more CSS "tricks." Like methods and ideas for pushing css possibilities to the extreme, despite minimal browser compatibility. It didn't shoot for the sky.. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great textbook with several misprints.
Great textbook! Everything explained in an easy and understandable way. I found several misprints though. :(

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Exercises in each chapter
This book covers it all. I just wish, as I am a novice to web design, that there were more real life examples to explain the elements. It was very technical and sometimes I got lost in the jargon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helps learn HTML
I haven't got too far, it gives pleasant assignments and lab-projects to learn HTML. I am more interested in CSS and such, but haven't got too far into the book to see if this is covered. I bought this as a textbook for a class in HTML I am taking. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars HTML Primer
I needed this for a class. Don't believe the title. Each lesson is only 10 minutes if you are a speed reader AND a geek. Not me. This class is a prerequisite for CAD. It's a good book if that's your sort of thing.

4-0 out of 5 stars straightforward and easy to understand
I like the book as it is easy and covers most of my basic HTML needs.Of course the title is misleading, since any book can be read chapter by chapter dedicating ten minutes each, but I never expected to learn HTML in ten minutes anyway. AdventureImagery.com

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 stars
I love this book as an intro, but there were a few typos that tripped me up as I followed the examples: for instance, the linked styles tag on page 44 is missing the slash at the end, so it should read ".../css"/>" instead of ".../css">". Also, the screen shots are rather small and hard to read. Otherwise it's a great book, very lean and clear, with references to useful websites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for what it is meant for ...
This book does exactly what it says -- it gives you little 10 minute lessons into HTML, XHTML, and CSS.If you want to delve in deep, you'll have to get some more comprehensive books.

The lessons are pretty straightforward and you'll be surprised (I was) on how the code can be slightly changed to meet your own specific needs.I now have a good basic understanding of HTML where before I had only a minimal understanding.

If nothing else, the book and appendices make a great quick reference guide. And the price is sure hard to beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide
This is a great guide, i personally learned a lot from this book. It was very sensible and made sense, organized in a great way so you can find things quickly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars For Sure!
This is really a great book. I had been studying HTML and CSS from some other books for about six months before launching into this one, but the difference in quality is like night and day. I do believe that studying an easier and more basic book has helped me to get a lot more out of this book, but whether this is your first HTML/CSS book or the one that soon follows, this is a superior book (I can't imagine there is a better one out there) and I highly recommend it.

HTML and CSS Web Standards Solutions is written in clear and easily understood language (easily understood for what it is, of course!). It is a step-by-step guide which will in the end give the aspirant a real foundation in how to design a website. The homework assignments are meaningful and in the end you produce a sample website whose principles are readily transferable to the kind of skills one needs to make his or her own personal website.

Having an extremely basic and limited knowledge of HTML/CSS before reading this book, I have had a series of "aha!" moments where I understand not only the dry theory (what was covered in other books), but the practical why you do things the way the author's suggest inn addition to the necessary nuts and bolts theory. This is an invaluable approach which takes the reader way beyond the usual "do as I say" format to understanding why you do certain things and why you don't do others. In the end you are able to think for yourself when you design a website and not just follow a formula or set of instructions.

I am making steady, and relatively painless progress thanks to the HTML and CSS Web Standards Solutions book. While the same topics are covered in many similar books, they are not, IMHO, covered as well, as clearly, or as comprehensively, as they are here.

Hats off to the authors for a five-star job!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners
I have always wanted to design web sites but never had the time to go on courses. Then I found this book. Not only is it written in everyday language, it is easy to follow, has excellent example and allows you to see your work as you progress, it also has excellent and easy to access on-line support every step of the way.I felt comfortable with the chapters, how they were organised and it was like having a tutor standing right there beside you.

It teaches XHTML emphasizing standards that will allow any website you build to be available to all browsers and includes information on how to make your website easy for those who use audio or other types of aides. You learn how to make clean, clear and well structured websites and all in XHTML with style sheets.

A chapter on how to look for an ISP to host your site as well as recommendations on software, either free or at a relatively low cost as extremely helpful.

I recommend this title for anyone who wants to build their own websites without the cost of purchasing expensive proprietary software.Become a Web Standardista today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the basics of HTML & CSS
This book is the best introduction to modern web site design I have yet come across. The authors are teachers and their focus is on understanding how HTML and CSS work together and why one should follow w3c standards when building a site. The result is a book that doesn't try to tell you everything you might want to know about web design, but will instead provide you with a solid foundation to build on.

If you are new to web design, or have only worked with WYSIWYG web software before, this won't be the only book you need on your shelf, but reading it first will make it much easier to understand all the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not without HTML and CSS Web Standards Solutions ...
First of all, I didn't just ordered this book blindly. I mean, I knew about its content, and how well written it were. Among many other books I could physically browse into and read, on the same subject, I found two books being outstanding, and this one being the best!

Here is how I went about about evaluating the content. As an engineer, I have got some expectations on how well done thing should be. I'm well-oriented on Networking, including HTML, and I needed some effort for my present project where HTML is part of the solution. I needed a comprehensive, structured and a content keeping some standard. This book offers the most in a very concise way.

I hope you don't need to have those "misty-engineer-eyes" to feel and get a similar perspective. And it's a book I definitely recommend for all kinds of reader regardless of background.

The reason that I ordered it from Amazon.com is the price. It costed half as much as it does at our local book-keeper here in Sweden, including shipping fee.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, practical, semantic, friendly and, of course, standards oriented
Where I'm coming from: I'm a backend developer who hasn't worked much with HTML and never got into front end design.I wanted to breach the barrier with a book that would provide me with what I needed to know to write semantically rich (x)html and style it without needing to become a guru.

This book does that and more.

The authors are professors but their tone is anything but dry. They're friendly but keep the content of each chapter rich with info, humor and advice on how to make use of it right away rather than wait to see some grand picture. The first half of the book introduces HTML but not as a grammar lesson.Rather it's always in the context of the kind of content you want to get out there and what the right tool (i.e.: tag) for the job is. The second half of the book explains how to style this content without any graphics intensive understanding. They show tableless one column and two column layouts and explain the various pitfalls beginners may have when attempting to set these up. There are also troubleshooting techniques explained (html and css validating, lurid palette to reveal what the divs in your document are actually doing...).

The book also lives up to the "standardista" claim. There are constant explanations of standards when it comes to using lists, tables (for tabular data), vs. 's, vs. @import and a host of other confusing road forks are covered in plain english with an eye toward the practical but standard compliant approach.

The companion site is excellent. Practically every example is shown there, so one can always look and compare to see that he or she is getting to where the authors want him to get.

I feel very enriched by the material and less nervous about tackling more advanced books on the subject of web design and web content. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, Easy to Understand and Filled with Nice Extras
Virginia DeBolt is a Web teacher, and her background in explaining things to students comes through in this book. Her writing style is simple and clear. She manages to explain a tremendous amount of material in style that is not too verbose, but that is amazingly thorough. The book is also has a tons of links to great resources.

I find that most students learn best when they are using hands-on exercises, rather than just reading through chapters in a book. Therefore, I was really happy to see that exercise files are included on the CD. This allows the readers to work along with the chapters and to really see the results of each change in XHTML or CSS code.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic so far
I have been so impressed with this book so far, though I'm just through Chapter 2. I am a relative beginner, so Chapter 1 was very important and extremely useful background for me. I already feel in 2 Chapters that I have learned a great deal of useful things. DeBolt does such a wonderful job of leaving no questions unanswered. I've found myself reading a paragraph and beginning to develop questions, and by the next paragraph she has addressed these. At least so far, I have found her to be a master at explaining to someone who is not yet a master. So far, I haven't skipped anything in the book, and I'm looking forward to more. Excellent book. Very happy I purchased this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I already had some knowledge of (x)html + css, but it's great to have this book with everything explained so well from the ground up. So it also can be used as a good reference book.
Great examples too and the cd that comes along is also quite helpful.
If you want to get acquainted with (x)html+css you will get a good understanding of these subjects with this book. Thumbs up, all the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars simple to understand full of information
Clear and concise, this book has taken me from knowing nothing about web design to publishing a site of my own in 3 weeks. While there is much more to learn, my site is running smoothly and 100% W3C Strict compliant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice little book.Sent very fast and was in good shape!
Book had the basics in HTML and had cute illustrations in it.Was very usefull to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I'm never disappointed with Dummies books and this one is no exception. Great read, easy to learn.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a great reference at a very inexpensive price...
I love this book because it is a well-written concise reference to HTML.It is also spirally bound so it lays flat to boot. This book contains what you need to know without a lot of superfluous text.It is well-organized and collect important information into summary sections. If you are looking for a quick reference, look no further!Like most Dummies books, however, it is written on inexpensive paper. This isn't a huge drawback, however, since computer books are ancient history very quickly and only useful for starting fires after a few years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners!
I love this book! 7 years ago, when I was in high school, I knew nothing about HTML, so I picked up this book. And it really helped me learn fast!

Each of the book's lessons is hands-on, which makes it so much easier to pick up. It teaches you HTML by having you type the codes into the Notepad program, and saving the file as an .html instead of a .txt file. Then, when you open it up, it appears in webpage format, and you can quickly edit and play around with the codes in Notepad to see what kind of different results you get. Actually, even to this day, I still use a Notepad program instead of one of those fancy page-creator programs. I like keepin' it DIY, Old School, baby!

Some of the things the book covers:
- how to use different fonts
- how to put in images
- how to make an image map (so when you click on different parts of the image, you're sent to different links)
- how to create basic tables
- how to create numbered and bulleted lists
- how to make frames

Even though the book won't teach you some of the fancier stuff you see on webpages, like how to use non-bordered tables for layout design, or how to make text change when you roll your mouse cursor over it, it will teach you how to be able to learn those things. Since the book taught me how to view the source code of webpages and how to understand code in the first place, whenever I went to someone's website and saw something cool I liked, I just viewed their source code to see how they were able to do those things. This is all perfectly fine; just DON'T STEAL SOMEONE ELSE'S LAYOUT. Not cool, people. Just see how others do things, and use those techniques to make something of your own design.

Once you learn the basics of HTML, it's easy to pick up that fancy stuff. There's plenty of tutorial sites on the web and thick HTML reference books at the library that'll give you the codes for that. And this book definitely gives you the foundation for learning those things. ... Read more

Markup is the fabric that holds the web together, but most people only scratch the surface of what can be achieved using (X)HTML.That's where this unique book comes init's aimed at web designers and developers who have already mastered the basics of HTML and web design, but want to take their markup further, making it leaner and more semantically rich, for a more efficient, more usable/accessible web site. HTML Mastery does all that and more, showing all of the HTML tags available, including less commonly used ones, where and how to use them, and clever styling and scripting techniques that you can employ to take advantage of them on your web site. It is totally standards compliant, up to date with modern web design techniques. Forms and tables are looked in particular detail, as there is so much that can be done with them. In addition, the book also looks at some of the advanced semantic tools that look to further improve the usability and semantic value of your sitesan entire chapter is devoted to Microformats, and a nod is given to XHTML 2.0 and Web Applications 1.0web standards of the future.Summary of Contents:

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of HTML Mastery
I was looking for a complete yet concise text on HTML.I found it in HTML Mastery and I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful book
Very limited information. A serious lack of examples. I made a big mistake buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know about (x)html, in one handy book
I disagree with J. Frasier's review; even experienced web designers may learn something new from this book. For example, I'd never thought to use the abbr element to further explain an asterisk used to indicate a required form field. And I'd never even heard of the element. You can call me an amateur, but the fact is you can build successful websites without these details, but using them makes your code more meaningful and useful.
The author also provides a no-nonsense introduction to microformats, which you will NOT find on the microformats website.
Excellent book worth reading and referencing.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is not as good as you are lead to believe
I am a web developer, and I have to say that this was a waste of money. It definately doesn't fall under the HTML Mastery it advertises. If you are just starting out in HTML this would be fine, but if you have any real experience coding, it is really kind of worthless. And no, I did not learn 1 new thing as the above comment states.

Anyways, if you are just learning HTML, get the book. If you have even moderate knowledge, I wouldn't bother, and if you are advanced, just move on to bigger and better books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh just get it!You will learn something new
Get it, read it, and I guarantee you will learn something new.And it doesn't hurt to reinforce the stuff you already know. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand web page creating with html
This book has step-by-step web page creation with html.Great book for students studying html.

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of date
My kid swore he needed this edition for a project but discovered that it wasn't that useful for modern work. I suggest buying the newer edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great title in the Teach Yourself Visually series
I repeated my success: checked a copy out of the library, found that it was full of help, purchased my own copy. These books (this one and TYV HTML) are very easy to follow. I knew no HTML before I started. I'll never be an expert, but they've taught me enough to build three small, simple web sites and have prepared me to use more technically oriented user manuals. I'm grateful!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Just Perfect!
When you are browsing through books in a library or bookstore because you have decided to learn HTML, many of them can seem a bit intimidating. I am an 11-year-old kid who already builds websites in a program called Dreamweaver. I know all about creating websites with that program, but I didn't know the first thing about making a website in HTML, or code. I found the book, Simplified Creating Web Pages with HTML 3rd Edition, and I looked through it. It has the same mapping and structure of a baby book, so it's really easy to understand, and there are no expectations in it. My dad bought the book for me that same day. I didn't touch it for about 2 days, but then I picked it up, and within 2 hours, I was already more than half way through it. The book was so easy, that I memorized the entire thing in under 4 hours! If you are new to HTML, and you don't want a large, scary book that may take you days to complete and months to master, than Simplified Creating Web Pages with HTML 3rd Edition is the perfect pick for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars SIMPLE FUN BOOK!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another in the great Teach Yourself Visually series
I first got acquainted with this series by checking TYV HTML out of the library. Good move! Ended up buying the book and then bought this copy for my stepdaughter (she maintains their family business's web site). We're both fans now.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book makes it easy
My 14 year old son borrowed this book from the local library for his computer programming class. He liked it so much, we purchased it for him.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok but could be better-
Two weeks ago I decided to re-work my company web sit. I ordered this book
and "Creating Web Pages with HTML". Creating came first and with it I was able to create a seven page site with pictures in under twelve hours.

Then came this book. There are three or four things in it that were not covered in "Creating" but "Creating" was much easier and simpler to follow and excecute. Creating did a much better job of taking it one step at a time, from the basic to the more complex in a more logical order.

I am far from an expert and this will probably get the job done for you even with out any previous html experience, but I would recommend "Creating" for its simplicity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for!
I bought this book back in 2002 to learn HTML and it was exactly what I was looking for. Easy to follow VISUAL instruction. After years of webpaging I STILL referance this book for quick easy to find reminders and brushing up. I recommend it to anyone, but especially those who know absolutely nothing about HTML nor where to begin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent step-by-step learning format
I purchased this book despite the less-than-satisfactory reviews here. I am glad I did. I used the textbook to supplement my online learning experience for university and ended up relying on the book heavily to complete projects and to get insight the class text didn't offer. I was able to create my own web page using only HTML -- that is, strictly text script and nothing more, I defined backgrounds, chose fonts, selected font colors and sizes, imbeded pictures, and links to other pages. I am amazed with what I learned from this book. Without it, I would have struggled with the rest of the students in the class who had no prior experience in creating web pages. I got an A- for the class and my project because I was able to clarify so much of our class discussion and projects with the contents covered in this book. I consider it an absolute must have for learning the foundation skills of web page design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I learned alot from this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who was interested in web design and development.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed
I am VERY disappointed with this book.It was the required reading for a barnesandnoble.com online class, so I mistakenly figured it would be a good book.

I can handle all the typos and grammatical errors, for example;
"...how to add dynamic content o your Web page..."
"To perform tasks in t his book,..."
"Changing the color and font enables you to emphasize important information or to make your Web pages more aesthetically pleasing or more readability."

However, in many instances, the code in the examples has errors too!I don't know how anyone who is trying to learn HTML, CSS, or XHTML without prior knowledge could learn from this book.

That being said, I do like the layout of the book and the numerous examples and pictures. If the editing department had done their job, this might actually be a good book.

2-0 out of 5 stars HTML: Your Visual Blueprint
This book has good information, but is poorly organized. The "lessons" are not organized in a logical way.
Plus, the text itself has grammatical errors and the illustrations show Web sites with laughably bad errors. For instance, "We takes the risk out of buying . . ." And "Directors Marketinging Book."

2-0 out of 5 stars Could have done so much better.
I bought this book because I wanted to learn CSS and, apart from this being the only book in my local store that covered CSS, I thought learning HTML and XHTML would be a bonus. The fact that the book covers the whole lot is a very good idea, the execution, however, leaves much to be desired.

I am currently up to page 88, so this is not a review of the entire book, but I felt so strongly about warning people I had to write now. I am already looking on Amazon for alternatives.

1. Errors: There are errors in the text and the images, some more serious than others, that can leave you confused and scrambling around various resources for answers.

2. The visual style is the only saving grace behind this book, because it's only through the pictures that I can understand what's going on. The copy itself is like reading a bad technical manual.

4. The approach seems utterly uncohesive and at no point do you actually feel you're progressing towards building anything. Each page reads as if they took their appendices and simply explained them, rather than building up a more profound understanding of what is essentially learning a new language.

This series of books has some very good consumer feedback, and I am sure other titles are very good, because the idea behind the format is essentially a sound one, but it really looks as if a minimum of thought and care went into producing this one and I cannot recommend it to anyone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars when learning, using, needing HTML this is the book
I was completely inexperienced and without HTML knowledge. I ordered this book from amazon.com and suddenly I have one of the best and prettiest websites ever. This book teaches you everything. I didn't even read it page by page. I just looked up what I was looking for or what I wanted to do on my website, used the codes and wa-la, instant beautiful results. This book saves you time and gives you precisely what you are looking for. Recommended 100%.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent author
I think this book was more advanced than I was able to handle, considering I was a beginner computer user.Nevertheless, when I
e-mailed the author 3-4 times, he was always professional, courteous, and willing to help. It's a great book and has an author who stands behind his product. If you are into web-page design, this book is definitely worth its money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book if you are new to HTML
Written for beginners, this book provides a solid foundation in how to write your own HTML (not how to use a WYSIWIG editor, such as FrontPage). Written in friendly, easy-to-understand language, the author progresses from chapter to chapter in a logical step-by-step fashion. What he doesn't cover in any given chapter is easily referenced in the Appendices, or in the many website links he provides. This book completely demystifies HTML.

However, what I found confusing when learning HTML is when and where to apply the all the different attributes (such as background color, font styles, text & image positioning and so forth). What I learned after having done a fair amount of web development is that cascading style sheets (CSS) are the way to go. This is explained in ch. 10. The reader of this book may wish to jump to this chapter at the beginning and be ahead of the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's simply too complete!
I took a course on HTML that lasted 4 months, and I thought I knew HTML after that. Two years after that I read this book, and in the month it took me to read it and summarize it, I learned more than what I did in that course. Not only does it teach you almost everything you need to know about HTML in an easy-to-follow way, but it also gets into other subjects like CSS, JavaScript and XML.Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Starter Book
"How to Do Everything in HTML" does exactly what it says.It simply takes a beginner (like me) and shows how to use basic programming to do what you want rather than what you can figure out.

This is THE book I would recommend to someone who wants to know what HTML is and does but lacks prior computer programming experience.Even those familiar with other computer languages such as C++ or java will find the user-friendly approach by Pence a joy over most technical books.

If a beginner's book is what you want, here it is! ... Read more

Very fast shipment, the book arrived in excellent condition.
Thank you for the fast shipment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for hands on but poor for testing....
I am currently enrolled in college and had the opportunity to take a web design class and this book was given as part of the class. I have had some basic HTML and XHTML experience before so some things were a little new to me. After taking on a few chapters I found some of the examples and things very informative. But the tests on the other hand are a mess and very hard to understand in this book. I have to take a test based on tutorial 4 section and the things it wants you to do are not covered in any of the previous chapters. I often found myself using google or checking the W3C school for references and hardly using the book other than checking on what it wanted me to do next. The book is great when it actually gives examples and it is fairly detailed but why add tests and things about code that has not been covered? The glossary and definitions base in the back is utterly useless and yet again, covered nothing in the previous chapters. I recommend searching elsewhere if you are planning on getting into web design classes. ... Read more

Product Description
Are you tired of reading reference manuals? Get ready for "HTML with CSS and XHTML 100 Success Secrets". This is not your ordinary technical manual. It is interesting, VERY helpful---even for seasoned professionals, and great for beginners.

You'll be reading answers to questions you'd always wanted to ask but never knew who to ask them. A true beginner will need to study this book. A professional will be refreshed.

HTML with CSS and XHTML 100 Success Secrets is totally unlike any other HTML book. Most are basic references -- "if you want this, do this" type books. Very dry and dull, not something you're going to sit and read in one setting. Not helpful to someone who is not technologically inclined who wants to learn how to "do a website."

This book is written to teach. It's written so that you remember what you read. It's set up for both newbie and guru alike, crammed with tips and tricks, arranged in a way that you can just browse and pick, or use it kind of like a HTML cookbook, if you will.

And that's the point. If you're looking for another HTML reference book, keep looking. This is a book for people who want to learn.

Learn the real 100 secrets of creating Web pages. Buy this book....you won't be sorry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unreadable; couldn't return it fast enough
For $9.99, I made the ill-fated choice to purchase "...100 Success Secrets, Tips, Tricks..." without first sampling it. I just needed a CSS reference on my Kindle. After purchasing, I first began to get nervous when I saw that the table of contents didn't display well on my Kindle DX - as though there were no CRLF pairs.
But I'm more concerned with content, so I continued on.
"It is very advantageous for a person to gain enough knowledge about the correct placing of CSS position as this will vitally help him to direct the precise position of his HTML elements. Good thing, it is already possible these days to do the designs that require the use of HTML image maps or JavaScript previously through the use of CSS." (from "CSS Position: Marveling on Its Purpose").
What? Ok, perhaps my standards are too high. After all, good development guides don't need to define art, right? They just need to be correct...
"When a person specifies position: absolute, the elements is automatically being erased from the document and transferred exactly as to where he would want to place it." (from "CSS Position: Marveling on Its Purpose").
Ok I'm out. High standards or not, I rather need verb/noun agreement, even if it is "just" a development guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative.
I bought this book after reading all the good reviews about it.It is all true. This is a very good book to read, if you have the time, and it is a very good reference book, if you don't have the time to read cover to cover. It is a thick book and worth your every penny you spend on it.I suggest you get this book before you even consider getting any other HTML books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well used reference on my shelf
I am not an HTML professional, but there continue to be many opportunities for me to use this book to aid in setting up small documentation sites or page sets for the various projects I do. I have found this book to be very helpful when the IDE and my own abilities fall short when hard-coding the pages. It also saved the day for one of the HTML class assignments a year or so ago. It has proved to be worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference book with a thorough index!
This reference book is worth the price because of it's detailed examples and thorough index. I own other CSS and HTML books, but this is the one I grab when I can't think of the proper HTML tag or parameter I need. The index so comprehensive that it works like a thesaurus by enabling you to get to HTML or CSS references pages that you need even if you don't know the exact name of what you're looking for. This reference book was invaluable in my programming my collar stays micro-business website at http://collarstays.biz. Although this edition is dated, it covers the currently used XHTML and CSS standards thoroughly.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Stop Reference.
If you are looking to buy just one book on HTML and RELATED technologies book, then this is it. A COMPREHENSIVE book. Explains every thing in a very lucid way. Easily assimilate complex topics with this book. The future is in HTML/XHTML and Javascript. Get this book and get ready.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference But Not For Beginners
If you are starting out with HTML/XHTML, you might be advised to get a tutorial. This work appears to begin with basics, but even the early chapters provide much more information than a novice wants or needs. (The "Links" chapter--Chapter 4--for example, describes all types of links, many of which a beginning web page author probably won't need to know about until he or she has acquired quite a bit more experience.
That said, this book is a good reference with lots of helpful tips. It may not be as complete as other reviewers hoped, but I have found it quite handy for learning many advanced topics. And, although the edition I have (the 4th) has been out a couple of years, the material is still mostly uptodate. In short, it is a very good resource. ... Read more

Product Description
HTML is the language of the web. If you need to build a web page, then you'll have to start with HTML. The most recent specification: HTML 4.01 defines several new features including expanded support for multimedia, style sheets (including aural style sheets, and the new CSS specifications), scripting, and new accessibility and internationalization standards. HTML 4.01 also includes updated support for familiar features such as text formatting, hyperlinking, forms, frames, and tables, and supports the very latest browser versions including Internet Explorer 6, Netscape 6 and Opera 5.

HTML Programmer's Reference (4.01 Edition) covers all these new and established features in detail and provides you with the knowledge and the skills to write great web pages that will be supported by all major browsers.Amazon.com Review
Suitable for almost anyone who develops Web applications, HTML 4.01 Programmer's Reference provides a thorough tour of HTML and related standards, covering every tag and attribute in the new 4.01 standard.

The strength of this book is that it serves as a guide to some of the best thinking in Web-page design using the latest in approved (and emerging) Internet standards. The authors explain HTML literally from the ground up and cover the structure of Web pages, starting with headers to body tags. Subsequent sections drill down into formatting text and common features like tables, links, and images. Throughout the book, the authors provide advice on the right way to do things for good cross-browser Web design. There's plenty on more advanced (and vendor-specific) features in both the Microsoft and Netscape browsers--for example, on frames and cascading style sheets.

The book consistently teaches best practices on what works and what doesn't. Later sections look at "deprecated" or obsolete tags. An appendix that lists every HTML tag and its level of support from HTML 2.0 through 4.01 and on browsers from Netscape and Microsoft from version 3 through version 6 more than justifies the cost of this reference.

Besides HTML 4.01 support, the book also offers a glimpse of new or emerging standards that every Web developer arguably should be aware of. From aural style sheets (which provide tags that work with sound and voice), to XHTML 1.0/1.1 and XHTML Basic (the designated heir to WAP/WML for wireless), HTML 4.01 Programmer's Reference provides a look into the future of Web content. Its cross-browser perspective on some best practices for designing Web content adds yet more value. --Richard Dragan

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands Down, Great Read
I was a seasoned HTML programmer a few years ago. Since then, I fell out of the craft and needed a book to start from the beginning so I wouldn't miss anything. This was that book. Examples, references, and meaningful information pertaining to the language. Recommended to anyone looking for a place to start on their own webspace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dog-eared already.
This is the only book for HTML 4.01 needed. Written and arranged so that information is easily found and understood. An excellent, comprehensive resource for both novice and experienced alike as it touches on everything one would need to know, forms-tables-style sheets-deprecated's, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am surprised no one has yet post a review for this one....
Honestly, I just got the book today. But guess what, I've been glued to my desk for 5 hours by now...First of all, if you know what it feels like to have ALL of your questions answered regarding the webpage you're working on then you know how I feel right now. This book is every bit competent as it was written to be - an html "reference."I am no newbie in html but still, I like how the book organize and explain the syntax and methodology of this language. My favorite section of the book was on style sheets, not only did I learn quite a few new tricks (or maybe they were simply not listed in my other reference) but I also found the cross-browser reference very useful. This is a fantastic reference that's full of examples and thoughtful materials.Just so you know, my other reference is the well-know "html 4 for the world wide web" by Elizabeth Castro. I must say it is well deserved the praise and hypes because nothing I've seen can topper this champ for for it's purpose -- it'll get you started in no time. But trust me, after you start programming in html for a while, you'll need a more in-depth reference. well, look no further, this is IT.At first I was hesitated to buy this book because there's no review on it......now I'm just a happy reader. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good information.
Tons of stuff covered in this book with a handy appendix for each major topic.Easy to follow and explanations keep things simple, allowing you to speed through many topics.

2-0 out of 5 stars Could of been much better
I new this book was not for beginners as I have done some html programming before. However I think this book is total waste if you never done any html programming before. The content sometimes can be confusing and just today I realised there was a bug in one of the examples. If there wasnt google or reference websites like [...] I think I would really srtuggle with this book. I am refering to most of the references from w3schools and trying to get some theory from this book. I think I should of done some more search before I baught this book because I definitely think there are much better books than this.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great beginners reference book for beginners!!
This is a great reference book for beginners... I myself am a seasoned systems analyst and already had books that covered most of the basic topics discussed in this book. There were no real world examples and nothing about the pitfalls of using web standards before they are even supported by popular browsers. Like I said at first, it is a really great reference book; and if you need one to get started, this is it! You will still need a book dealing with the methodology variations in coding.

5-0 out of 5 stars replaces 6 books [one for each language]
How the Web has grown! In doing so, and aiding its growth, has been the use and development of several languages. Naturally, Schafer starts with the language that birthed the Web - HTML. Actually this needs its dual ("twin") on a server, http. But Schafer discusses http in a later chapter devoted to CGI.

Hopefully, you should be able to appreciate that HTML is simple. In fact, of all that the book discusses, HTML is the simplest language. Several initial chapters walk you through HTML. It must be stressed that mastery of HTML is needed to make sense of the rest of the book.

The later languages either extend the scope of an HTML file, or they generate the file, roughly speaking. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) lets you easily factor out common definitions that are used across multiple web pages, where you can imagine that each web page corresponds to a file storing it. Schafer explains how to use CSS to simplify management of a set of HTML files. A centralised way to set common fonts and the like. More robust.

But HTML is a declarative language. Good, because laymen can more easily understand and write such languages. It's easier to say what should be done, than how to do it. But for the times when you need more expressive power on the browser, Schafer offers JavaScript. A procedural language that actually has nothing to do with Java. [The coincidence in names was a marketing ploy.]

Schafer does not ignore the server. CGI is given, as the first generation attempt at server side code. Its limitations spawned the use of Perl, PHP and Python for easier parsing of user input and generation of new dynamic pages.

Each of these languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Perl, PHP and Python) is often the subject of its own book. No surprise then that Schafer explaining all 6 gave us a book of this length! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars not very easy, learning HTML book
Learn HTML 4 In a Weekend, 4th Edition
I bought this book with all intentions of learning basic HTML.I've been using a computer for a long time, but I am not a very good techie. So, this book really promised to help me learn HTML, SIMPLY.It was not very good; it was overly complicated, when all I wanted to know how to do, was learn the language and post images and pictures whenever I posted online. However, it was way too confusing. It was way too complicated for a beginner.I did not think it was a good job for somebody who was beginning at all.Not with HTML.In fact, I was so confused, I went to the author's website, because he promised in the book that he would help people.Go to his website, e-mail him, ask for help.I did that; I never got any help.I e-mailed him several times, with specific questions, and he never answered any of my e-mails.So, if you are extremely good a good techie, and very clever, you might be able to do this. However, I do not think this is good for beginning HTML.It is very complicated, and it cannot be done in a weekend.Furthermore, the author says in the book that he promises to help you on his website, and that is not true.He ignores all e-mails for help.I suggest, get a good techie friend to help you learn HTML, or maybe a computer repair man, and get him to recommend a very simple way to learn it.Often, there are instructions online, for free, on how to learn HTML.Nobody tells you that! There's lots of instruction online, and HTML, simply, is one of them.I would do that, before I decided to buy this book.Yes, talk to a techie about HTML, ask him for some help, and also ask him what free website to go to, to help you learn HTML.I would not buy this book again.Thank you.Of course, this is just my opinion.

1-0 out of 5 stars Learn HTML 4 IN a Weekenr 4th edition
As a dislexic computer user I will not be able to use this publication.
I need instructions in colour and well spaced, laid out in an imaginative manor. What can I do, could I return this book as I found it impossible to understand how to begin to use it? It is not user friendly for thosewith this learning difficulty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginners learning tool
Most HTML instructional books I've seen are closer to reference manuals than learning tools. If you want to learn how to build web pages from scratch using native HTML this is the book you should be looking at.Years ago I used the 1998 "Revised Edition" of this book which came with a CD to learn most of what I know about HTML.What I liked the most about it was that it separated each major study area into standalone elements. When I finished a particular tutorial session I could actually start using what I learned in real life web pages. In addition, all the coding examples presented in the book were also on the CD I got with the book. On thing I especially liked was that I found nothing strange in any of Callihan's coding examples.Unlike a lot of authors of technical books he doesn't make any assumptions about his readers' prior technical knowledge. His coding example only used HTML commands that he had already thoroughly explained in his instructional text.

The "Revised Edition" version of the book I read began with teaching you the basic HTML commands, then it moved on to the intermediate commands, then advanced commands and finally it dealt with a few of the more esoteric subjects. The book would almost certainly bore most web savvy readers; however, if you're a novice and want to learn HTML from scratch I highly recommend buying this one.

One last thing, it's just a cute title.Don't expect to be whipping out web pages after just one weekend. It will take you at least two or three.I never did get around to reading "The Frames Tutorial" section of my book and since I don't use frames I probably never will.
