THE POWER OF INTRANETS was created for technical users who will want to get into the guts of how to maximize the new web functionality of Office 2000. This book gives the inside scoop-straight from the Microsoft Office team--on how to use Microsoft Office 2000 to create an intranet site; how to prototype an intranet site for other web users; how to set up a site on a server; and how to sell an IT department on hosting a site.Amazon.com Review
Microsoft Office 2000 introduces many new features thatintegrate the Office suite with intranets as never before. ThePower of Intranets places these exciting capabilities inperspective, showing how you can leverage them to improve workgroupcommunication. This title is unabashedly Microsoft propaganda, but itis nevertheless quite useful for deploying Office 2000.

Authored bya former Microsoft employee and current Access solution developer, this book is an easy read for technical types and management aswell. The book is packed with annotated screen shots that quicklypoint out key features.

The author explains various databasedeployment strategies in plain English with their respective pros andcons clearly spelled out. A companion CD-ROM includes the 60 MinuteIntranet Wizard--a utility that runs in FrontPage 2000 and speeds youthrough the construction of a base intranet, complete with databaseaccess. This is a nice launching point for diving into creating yourown workgroup Web site.

Whether you run a small business or arepart of a large enterprise, The Power of Intranets is a goodguide to have around. It's great for indoctrinating new personnel andallowing a smooth transition to Office 2000. --StephenW. Plain

Product Description
Getting an organization up and running on the Internet and the Web requires the appropriate foundation for the task - a server system with enough power, a well-developed operating system (OS), and an expandable architecture. This 212-page report from CTR describes recent advances and future prospects in server technology and their applicability for providing Internet and Web services.

Server Technology: An Overview

As the Internet and intranets continue to gain importance in today's organizations, selecting a server architecture and strategy is rapidly becoming a mission-critical decision. The server can determine the success or failure of an organization's computing architecture, including its Internet and Web services.

CTR's new Evaluating Server Technologies for Internet and Intranet Applications report provides in-depth analyses of the present and future prospects in server technology and their applicability to providing Internet and Web services. This information is crucial to evaluating and selecting an appropriate server technology that will provide your organization with maximum capabilities.

Advances in Server Technology

Recent advances in server technology have had a significant impact on the role of servers and their ability to be used as Internet and Web servers. The report explains, in detail, how these advances have affected server components such as UltraSPARC and Intel processors, multiprocessors, peripheral component interconnect (PCI) and other local buses, disk drives, and networks.

The report examines each server component in detail and discusses how all components will be affected by technological advances.

Operating Systems for Internet Servers

The selection of an operating system (OS) for an Internet server is as critical as choosing the hardware platform. Evaluating Server Technologies for Internet and Intranet Applications discusses the OS choices for Internet servers including Linux, Macintosh, UNIX, Windows NT, and Windows 95.

The report addresses the vital factors that must be considered when selecting an OS and discusses the pros and cons of each OS.

Choosing an Internet Server

The most popular Internet server platform today is Sun Microsystems' SPARC family. CTR's new report examines the system architectures of Sun, traces the company's accomplishments in the industry, and evaluates whether the company deserves this top position.

Other Internet server platforms discussed in the report include Intel's Pentium Pro Server, Hewlett-Packard's (HP's) PA-RISC, Digital's Alpha, and Silicon Graphic's MIPS. The possibility of using the mainframe as an Internet server is also explored.

The report includes a set of practical guidelines for choosing an Internet server platform, as well as valuable information on how to efficiently configure the platform with the essential software packages and tools.

Internet Server Security

Security has become a paramount concern on server systems due to the establishment of common interconnections between the Internet and corporate local area networks (LANs).

The Evaluating Server Technologies for Internet and Intranet Applications report examines the need for security on Internet server systems and reviews encryption technologies such as public key/private key encryption and the secure sockets layer (SSL) protocol. User authentication schemes for controlling user access to data are discussed, as well as the use of Internet server platforms as firewalls.

The Future of Internet Servers

Changes in Web, Internet, and intranet technologies will have an enormous effect on server platforms and how they are used in the future. CTR's report makes an informed forecast of future directions of these technologies and is a critical guide for information systems (IS) managers responsible for planning and implementing Internet and intranet servers for their organizations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best
This book provides a great overview of some very complex technology.I think the author does a great job in putting this technology in terms that one can understand and apply in his or her own enterprise.

This book covers the entire scope of client/server including explaining the application of CASE technology and how to test a client/server system.

If client/server is in your future, this one has to be on your shelf.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money
An incoherent collection of superficial technical jargon.
If you are looking for guidance in client/server or intranet development there will be nothing of value in this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars This guide is lost.
I'm a programmer, and I bought this book hoping to learn something that I could use. After reading through this book, I realize that I'm no better off...

The author attempts to sound intelligent by using all the buzz-words he can muster, as if his intended audience is incompetent software managers who lust for the latest technical jargon.

I didn't actually read every word in this book.I read the first 7 chapters and was shocked to find that I was flipping pages faster and faster.I was reading the paragraph headers and maybe a paragraph here and there.Page after page I began to feel swindled. Its hard not to.Every topic that the author describes seems like an explanation of the obvious. And then he moves on to describe some other technology.I found myself thinking, ... Is there any *real* information in here?'

I was looking for detailed information about client/server application development, and I never found it.The author covers so many different technologies in the client/server world (database servers, client development tools, third generation client development tools, specialized development tools, multi-platform development tools, smalltalk tools, file-oriented DB tools, reporting tools, CASE tools) that I became lost in the sea (ocean) of sheer possibility. The discussion of the tools was shallow and cliche and lasted from chapter 8 through chapter 15.Thats over 150 pages - roughly 1/3 of the book.

That's not to say that the remaining 2/3 are particularly useful either. After a while, the chapters start looking the same.

For the programmers who actually have to implement client/server systems: this book is little more than a product/tool catalog.

For the managers: this book is a must have if you want to impress upper-management with your new client/server vocabulary.

...

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a real Must have Book
If you are going to implement a Client/Server Solution, this book realy can guide you. You will see from devolpent tools to aplication servers and will have a very good explanation about the right solution to your problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best overview of new client/server technologies I've seen.
Working in one shop for a long time makes developers and system administrators pretty dependant on one brand and strategy for performing client/server data access tasks. David Linthicum's overview helps you "step out of the box" and look at new strategies and directions in client/server technology. ... Read more

Product Description
1-0 out of 5 stars Where's the content?
The title is misleading. This book doesn't show you how to do anything. It is a very brief overview of what "can" be done. More of a marketing book for Domino than a technical book.

2-0 out of 5 stars A very disappointing book
I was expecting much more detailed information in this book, and was sadly disappointed. I'm afraid it's basically a marketing book that your boss would find useful to read to tell him the kind of things he can do with his Intranet, but it offers very little for the Intranet developer. Forget about the 'members only' web site it's a waste of time.

2-0 out of 5 stars out-dated info
First off, although I own this book, I never read it. I was ABOUT to read it, but flipping through it I noticed a table comparing Lotus Notes to 'traditional intranets' that was dated from 1996. Considering this book was published in 2000, that's completely unacceptable. That information is COMPLETELY irrelevant now. I noticed a few other references to information that seemed out-dated (e.g., 28.8 connection speeds, etc.) so I put the book down. I don't know how good the information is, but I'm assuming the date it was published has nothing to do with the date it was written.

2-0 out of 5 stars FYI: Eileen Rudden works for Lotus and is in marketing
I have seen her name frequently in marketing briefings from Lotus, so as I suspected before reading the other reviews (I do not have the book), it is a marketing book, not a technical book. For some reason, even now in lateJune, there still are not any good R5 books out yet.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone preparing to implement Notes
This book is comprehensive, yet easy to read, with enough information at the layman's level to provide even a novice system architect or planner with a solid foundation for building their own communications network basedon Lotus Notes/Domino.The noteworthy characteristic of the book is thatit is based on real groupware environments set up in real companies.Theauthors have given readers the benefit of learning from others' successes(and mistakes) in a lighthearted and often humorous way. This book impartsa lot of knowledge without being dry or stuffed with technical arcania.Ithink it is a must-read for anyone who will be participating in LotusNotes/Domino system design or technical roll-out because it was written bysomeone who has "been there, done that." ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Useful
You would think that with five authors there would be something useful in this book. Unfortunately, this book is all about the politics of Intranets and not about actually building one. There is one page with an outline of possible Intranet topics, but other than that there is no help on Intranet content.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
It is way to basic, if you've been running an intranet in a largish size company then you don't need this book. If you just got thrown to the wolves though then this may (or may not help). I can't honestly recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars A good effort but outdated.
If this was still 1998, this would be an excellent read but unfortunately, as with most material in this category (Web Usability), it ages too quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good advice and very realistic.
This book has definately prepared me for the challenges that are ahead ofme.Creating an intranet is the easy part of the process. The bookdiscusses the politics that are involved and what obstacles you may need toovercome.Regardless of it not being a "technical" book, it gaveme a more clear understanding of exactly how the whole thing works, andpolitical steps I might need to take to prepare myself and my company.Iwould recommend this book to anyone who may be involved in the process -beginning or advanced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect! Recommended to anyone who looks beyond technology!
Already from the start I enjoyed this book. A book which shows that intranets are --indeed-- about people and not technology. Although my background is quite technical (UNIX admin...) I recognize that it is not technology in the first place which needs attention. Good structured, nice to read. The first 4 chapters were (for me) most valuable. The rest of the book is a very handy guide for implementing and learning the processes involved. So a big relief and I recommend this book to everybody who is able to look *beyond* the technology... ... Read more

Product Description
How do you secure your IP network without destroying it? The IPsec protocols are the only viable standard for secure, network-layer transmission on IP, yet they can wreak havoc on critical applications and other enhanced network services. Interoperability problems between vendors, as well as limitations in the basic technology, can cause problems that range from annoying to disastrous. This book tells you how IPsec works (or doesn't work) with other technologies, describes how to select products that will meet your needs, and discusses legal issues critical to IPsec deployment.

This hands-on guide will help you to:
* Analyze how and why IPsec may break existing networks
* Combine IPsec with other enhanced IP services and applications
* Determine the causes of IPsec performance problems and protocol conflicts
* Understand how existing laws and regulatory trends may impact your use of IPsec products
* Understand the basic technological components of IPsec
* Evaluate IPsec vendors and products

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother
I didn't find this book useful at all. This is not a technical book.In fact I'm not sure who the target audience is.I'm a system architect and implementor and didn't get anything from reading this book.

I did like the IPSEC - Securing VPNs by Davis. It steps through each aspect of IPSEC.It's a bit heavy on the math behind the encryption for my taste, but I found it easy to skip those parts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Title
The nature of security management is changing rapidly. Just as physical security is becoming more noticeable in the workplace so too is information security becoming an indispensable component, as companies are putting their corporate jewels on publicly available networks.

Security was not part of the blueprint when the Internet was designed in the 1960s and 1970s. As the need for security became a pressing demand in the 1990s, the Internet Engineering Task Force, the overseer of the Internet, created Internet Protocol Security, or IPsec.

IPsec is a developing Internet standard for network-level security and is one of the most important security protocols to be developed in the last five years. IPsec is able to provide the level of transaction processing security that was lacking in the previous version of Internet Protocol.

While the authors do a good job of showing how IPsec works in theory, readers may find that there is not enough real-world information to justify its price. In large part that's because roughly one-third of the book is a copy of the IPsec RFC. Nor does the book detail how IPsec is specifically configured on devices such as routers and servers.

On the other hand, the book concludes with an excellent chapter about what to ask vendors. The questions provided in this book will help the prospective buyer differentiate between IPsec snake oil salesmen and those vendors whose products really do secure networks. Overall, however, the book is not required reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is no bible
This book does a fine job of filling you in on the hardware and softwareissues, leagal issues, and political issues surrounding IPSec.It toucheson just about every topic even remotely related to IPSec. It does a poorjob of telling you how to set up and implement any sort of IPSecnetworking. It was a well-written overview, but definitely not a book tobase your entire network on.Though well-written, I found the networkdiagrams used in this book to be poorly designed and confusing. If you arelooking for a basic intro to IPSec, then this one is great, otherwise, you'll probably want to read something else.

2-0 out of 5 stars A book on IPsec deployment, not implementation...
This book provides a grounding in various aspects of IPsec, but it more serves as a buyer's guide than an implementation manual. If you're looking for details on how to actually write an IPsec implementation, this is NOTthe book for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Glossly overview of IPsec
The book is more of an introduction to IPsec and covers it in a glossy form. You can learn more about IPsec by reading the RFC for it than the first 3 chapters of this book. The writers did not explain VPN very welland did only a very high level talk about intranets. I would recommend adifferent book if you want to understand IPsec well. This book is more formanagers to read or the marketing/sales department. ... Read more

Product Description
The potential of corporate intranets is only beginning to be realized. And this is the book that helps decision makers see it clearly. UNDERSTANDING INTRANETS is for managers and anyone else in the corporation who works closely with Information Services professionals. Now readers can understand challenges and opportunities, recognize solid proposals and pilot projects, and communicate comfortably with their Information Technology colleagues. In addition, intranet technology from Microsoft is thoroughly examined.Amazon.com Review
Tyson Greer's clear writing and engaging personality makeriding the intranet learning curve fun. She starts with a good-naturedrant about the confusion caused by the term "intranet."Greer then gives you an overview of intranet basics, a brief historyof how intranets evolved from "mainframe culture" and then alook at the considerations that should go into developing a corporateintranet. She examines the option to trade information with otherorganizations through extranets, publicizes the risks inherent inintranet systems, and discusses a variety of worthwhile uses forintranets, from corporate publishing to distance learning.

Greerthen goes into more of the nitty-gritty of intranet development, including planning, developing a business case for the system, implementing a system, and performing ongoing evaluation andmaintenance of an intranet. This book will not turn the average personinto a technical whiz, but it will help a marginally technicalbusinessperson understand what an intranet involves and what it canoffer to the organization.

Aside from being well written,Understanding Intranets is also so well constructed that youcan get all the key information within a half hour. Short summaries ofeach paragraph run down the book's wide margins, making it easy toskim for main ideas or quickly review a chapter. But don't just skimthe summary lines--that would be cheating yourself. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Intermediate Intranet How-To
Aimed at students, managers and consultants who want a thorough overviewof what an Intranet is about, `Understanding Intranets' covers in wellpresented chapters:

Intranet basics (definitions, applications, businesscase), from mainframe culture to Internet technologies (network topologies& management), the extranet option (security issues, applications),risks and mitigation strategies (security), using an intranet for quickpublishing, using an intranet for information management, knowledgeworking, distance learning on an intranet, planning, launching a pilotproject, building a business case, implementing your intranet, maintenanceand evaluation, and looking further ahead.

Strengths are: the effectiveuse of side-notes, side-bars, bulleted lists and illustrations; the broadconsistent coverage of timely content; the attractive readable style; andenough guidance to actually implement useful intranets. Improvements couldinclude reducing pagecount for the content; coverage of more advancedapplications (e.g. business intelligence); a greater indication of global& sector business context; and more pointers to supporting material andfurther reading.

Overall I liked this book a lot, but suspect a newcompanion `advanced' text could bring things up to date, and offer readersmore tools and insight to improve their corporate information systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
I have searched and searched for a good book on intranets. It explains everything and has wonderful diagrams.A must buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that makes a difficult ( dry) subject easy to read.
The margin notes make finding topics of interest much easier. Most middle managers like to skim read books of this nature looking for the topic they are interested in.This is a book that should be on the desk of management available for constant referral. ... Read more
