5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent hands-on tool
This is the best I've seen on setting up an intranet. My only concern is that it is becoming a bit dated -- if a new edition were to come out I would buy it in a second!

3-0 out of 5 stars Buen libro, pero no si trabaja on IIS
Es un excelente libro, y abarca todos los conceptos sobre internet e intranets. Pero no lo compre si trabaja con Internet Information Server, o productos Microsoft.

5-0 out of 5 stars How about a second edition!
Tim, this is a good piece of work, however, this is 1998. How about a second edition? Excellent book. It pulls itall together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-organized, clearly-written, in-depth look at subject.
For anyone interested in developing an internal network based on the World Wide Web model, this is the book to use. It covers all aspects of the topic from its "Introduction to the World Wide Web" to "New Intranet Possiblities." Each chapter starts with objectives, which are summarized at the end. In between, Evans covers each topic clearly with examples from real life. Evans steps the reader through the creation of a basic Intranet and then adds on all the bells and whistles. And he makes cogent analyses and criticisms of the software and techniques he discusses. Included is a CD-ROM with much of the Unix, Windows, and Mac software used to create Internet and Intranet sites. For anyone in an organization considering this technology, this book is well worth its price. ... Read more

Product Description
Foreword by Lars Knudsen Practical Intranet Security focuses on the various ways in whichan intranet can be violated and gives a thorough review of thetechnologies that can be used by an organization to secure itsintranet. This includes, for example, the new security architectureSESAME, which builds on the Kerberos authentication system, adding toit both public-key technology and a role-based access control service.Other technologies are also included such as a description of how toprogram with the GSS-API, and modern security technologies such asPGP, S/MIME, SSH, SSL IPSEC and CDSA. The book concludes with acomparison of the technologies. This book is different from other network security books in that itsaim is to identify how to secure an organization's intranet.Previously books have concentrated on the Internet, often neglectingissues relating to securing intranets. However the potential risk tobusiness and the ease by which intranets can be violated is often fargreater than via the Internet. The aim is that network administrators and managers can get theinformation that they require to make informed choices on strategy andsolutions for securing their own intranets. The book is an invaluable reference for network managers and networkadministrators whose responsibility it is to ensure the security of anorganization's intranet. The book also contains background reading onnetworking, network security and cryptography which makes it anexcellent research reference and undergraduate/postgraduate text book.Practical Intranet Security also includes a CD-ROM with theSESAME security architecture, and example SESAME secured applications. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Internet/New Media Job Seekers
The perfect guide for the technically clueless on how everything Internet works from the macro to the micro levels in easy to understand discriptions and pictures. As a career counselor, I suggest this book for every clientlooking to work in the Internet or for a dot com company as the appropriateintroduction to high tech for low tech types. It gives you the big andsmall pictures, literally, with accompanying technical jargon explained. Ihave not found a comparable book to use in this catagory that works aswell.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite a primer
This was a very helpful book for refamiliarizing myself with the concepts behind LANs and WANs. If you are truly just getting started with understanding intranets, you would be better served if you also got a copy of "How Networks Work" and read that book first.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent primer on how a LAN or WAN *really* works.
It's easy to understand a LAN ... when there's an administrator to explain. It's easy to understand a WAN ... when there's a network support desk to fix problems for you. It's easy to get onto the Internet ... when your ISP has a tech support line with plenty of patience. But how does it all happen? What's TCP/IP mean? How come I get a "Forbidden!" message when I browse certain pages? This book is an excellent primer for the computer neophyte, or someone who's boning up on networking in the 90s. Simple text and easy to follow illustrations take you by the hand and gently explain things like "how a web page gets back to you?" and "what's the OSI Network Model?" Think networking is only for geeky techie types? Think again. Preston Gralla makes it all as clear as mom's chicken broth. David Spalding ... Read more

Product Description
CTR's 265-page report addresses the issues surrounding the development of networked multimedia applications. It discusses the successful intranet implementations of early business adopters, providing specific examples of applications and associated benefits. The report also reviews the latest tools and products being developed by hardware and software vendors.

Benefits of Intranet Implementation

CTR's report, Multimedia Applications for Enterprise Intranets: A Guide to Planning and Implementation, examines the issues relevant to establishing multimedia intranets at the corporate level. Implementation of internal Web servers provides a single interface by which individuals, workgroups, and departments can actively communicate with each other.

The report discusses the advantages and drawbacks of multimedia intranets and shows how network managers can guide an organization toward becoming a virtual corporation. Many corporations are moving to intranets and putting less value on the Internet -- the report explains why.

The report also covers critical topics such as technical requirements, scalability of multimedia tools, integrating intranets with existing legacy systems, high-performance equipment, and management of multimedia content.

Multimedia Applications on Intranets

An intranet enables a variety of valuable business applications, such as online publishing of corporate newsletters, employee services, company policy manuals, internal advertising for assistance and skills, and corporate news and information. Careful consideration of intranet applications is critical to enhancing the competitiveness and productivity of an organization's internal operations.

CTR's report provides detailed descriptions of the most common intranet functions. Special attention is given to multimedia applications such as interactive audio and video training, E-mail, real-time videoconferencing, whiteboarding, and virtual reality (VR) simulations.

Intranet Networking Issues

CTR's Multimedia Applications for Enterprise Intranets: A Guide to Planning and Implementation report details information on current networking trends, with a special focus on the integration of intranets with legacy systems.

Management of multimedia objects across enterprise networks is becoming more and more critical. The report explains the impact of local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) expansion policies on the success of multimedia object management.

The report takes a close look at multimedia networking technology, addressing important issues such as bandwidth, massive storage, compression systems, real-time transmission protocols, and networking equipment.

Intranet Security Issues

Many organizations are establishing intranets and linking them to outside networks such as WANs and the Internet. Unauthorized access to company resources is a growing concern at a time when more and more mission-critical applications are being placed on intranets.

CTR's report offers valuable information that will help companies establish effective intranet security. The latest security techniques are discussed, such as implementation of firewalls and encryption technology. The report also explains the impact of these security measures on multimedia transmission.

Multimedia Servers and Browsers

CTR's report reviews the vendor offerings for Web server hardware and software, providing specific information about features and implementation issues. The report also addresses current trends in the development of multimedia superbrowsers. Due to the growing use of intranets, the leading Web browsers are being continually expanded and improved. The report examines what these enhancements will mean to the corporate intranet user.

Creating Intranet Web Sites

Multimedia Applications for Enterprise Intranets: A Guide to Planning and Implementation illustrates the steps necessary to create multimedia Web sites on an intranet. The report also lists the different tools available, such as multimedia authoring systems, editing and streaming tools, Java and Shockwave languages, search engines, and virtual reality modeling language (VRML). The report presents 40 invaluable case studies of corporate intranet implementation to help project managers identify the specific scenarios that are best suited for intranet applications.

Your Implementation Guide

This report will guide network managers through the entire intranet implementation process, including identifying the most valuable multimedia applications, integrating intranet technology into an existing network, and securing a corporate intranet. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This "glossary" only has 100 words!
With thousands of related terms, this is very limited. Every time I've picked up the book to look up a term, it wasn't available. This is a waste!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to internet technology....
The authors take a unique approach to help one understand the concepts of the internet and its confusing terminology. The introductory summary provides a clear perspective of how the internet and its related attributeshave quickly developed into a powerful tool in today's marketplace.Itthen provides a conceptual look into the future of how this new technologywill impact our daily lives. The business case examples (ie. BusinessInternet Vignettes) are a great reference point for all technical andnon-technical backgrounds- even those with an existing understanding of howpowerful the internet and e-commerce can be.These examples go beyond thebig Fortune 500 success stories and document how mid-size business' applythis new technology. A well documented glossary of internet terms hasalso been outlined by the authors. This is a great feature for all readerswho must grasp an understanding of this new technology and its relatedjargon.

3-0 out of 5 stars The book is encyclopedia-like.
I found this book not that useful to me. I am no beginner. This book is for beginners who wants to know about jargons and generally general stuff related to it. I bought this book because of the author Walid Mougayar whomhave impressed me. Helpful if you want to know something but not too deep.Useful for managers who wish to conduct conversations on technical stuff asice-breakers. Even the initial section which describe different companiesis too shallow. I get get better stuff elsewhere. Perhaps in-depth of a fewcompanies would have been much more useful. Reading the book remind me ofthe old days when I spent my time in the libaries browsing throughBritannica and researching on various subjects. As stated before what couldbe gained is just skin deep but could serve as a point for deeper reading. It could serve as s book on a serve for non-technical managers who may wishto do some initial reading before attending a technical meeting. I do notrecommend this book for people who wants more in-depth knowledge. Irecommend it to people who wants an overview.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book for learning scripting languages
Mr. Siyan's book is technical and intended, as advertised, for the intermediate/advanced reader. As a student, studying for Novell's 540 Web server exam, I found chs. 3,4,and 14 the most helpful. These deal the with installation and administration of the Web Server and FTP services respectively. This book really shines though in its coverage of the scripting languages: CGI, PERL and Java. On the downside, you'll wade through alot of material to study for your CNE elective. Those on the CIP track may find the book more helpful. The editors of IDG books should have insisted on keeping Mr. Siyan's Eastern religious beliefs out of the text. It shows up in the screen shots and several long scripting examples. Really, I felt like I was being proselytized at times. Surely the author could have found more neutral material!Aside from these few criticisms, the author has produced a good introduction to scripting which deserves a wide audience. ... Read more

Product Description
