3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
I had to get this book for a computer graphics:imaging class I'm taking at university of baltimore. The book was to be used as a reference book for us and not necessarily a textbook. I find it very easy to use. It is especially helpful when at home doing an assignment. There's no teacher at home to ask a question so just go to the index and bam you can find what you generally in two chapters (one maybe indrotucing the tool or function and another demonstrating it in a more complex piece). It's a good book overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
its a great book, full color pages and easy to understand.the pictures are based off of MacOS.required textbook for the fashion institute of technology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprise
I like to order a Missing Manual and an easy visual start manual for each software product.I ordered this product because it said visual. I was disappointed when it care because it was not as visual as the visual brand that I usually order. However, upon glancing through the book, I found that the information is great.I probably will stick to the usual visual manuals that I order in the future, but I indeed will use this book in addition to the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an overhaul
I've purchased Adobe 3rd party books over the years and I'm not sure if this was the intention, but the Visual Quickstart Guide for CS5 appears to me as a complete overhaul. Beautifully laid out, easy to find stuff, and even the screen captures (which are a big part of the book) are extra large.

Just wonderful. I wonder if the other upcoming Visual Quickstart Guides are overhauls too?

Product Description

For courses in Introductory Statistics and Research Methods courses using SPSS.

Using SPSS guides students through the most basic of SPSS techniques using step-by-step descriptions, presents statistical techniques and instruction on how to conduct statistical analyses, and explains in detail how to avoid all the obstacles common in the study of statistics.

The development of easy-to-use statistical software like SPSS has changed the way statistics is being taught and learned. Students can make transformations of variables, create graphs of distributions of variables, and select among statistical analyses all at the click of a button. However, even with these advancements, students sometimes still find statistics to be an arduous task. They continue to be faced with many potential obstacles and they might feel overwhelmed and stressed rather than challenged and excited about the potential for mastering these important skills. Samuel Green and Neil Salkind have written a text to specifically address these issues.

2-0 out of 5 stars confusing
The basics of any word program is covered well. The problem occurs when the manual becomes more technical on the SPSS side. I'm taking an online class using this book and program and there are many discussions in class about how to use it. If you are using it, you'd better know computers and programs pretty well in order to decipher some of the lessons in this book.

Product Description
The amazing true story behind the siege of America's favorite beer company

How did InBev, a Belgian company controlled by Brazilians, take over one of America's most beloved brands after barely a whimper of a fight? Timing, and some unexpected help from powerful members of the Busch dynasty, the very family that had run the company for more than a century.

In Dethroning the King, the award-winning financial journalist who led coverage of the takeover for the Financial Times details how the drama that unfolded at Anheuser-Busch in 2008 went largely unreported as the world tumbled into a global economic crisis second only to the Great Depression. Today, as the dust settles, questions are being asked about how the "King of Beers" was so easily captured by a foreign corporation, and whether the company's fall mirrors America's dwindling financial and political dominance.

  • Discusses how the takeover of Anheuser-Busch will be seen as a defining moment in U.S. business history
  • Reveals the critical missteps taken by the Busch family and the Anheuser-Busch board
  • Argues that Anheuser-Busch had a chance to save itself from InBev's clutches, but strong forces behind the scenes forced it to capitulate

From the very heart of America's heartland to the European continent to Brazil, Dethroning the King is the ultimate corporate caper and a fascinating case study that's both wide-reaching and profound.

Amazon.com Exclusive: Q & A with Author Julie MacIntosh

Author Julie MacIntosh

What was the most startling piece of information you came across during your interviews and research for Dethroning the King?
Two things shocked me, actually. I had heard about the rough relationship between August Busch III and his son, August Busch IV, but the rumors hadn’t prepared me for the reality of the situation on the ground in St. Louis. They had a huge blowup over whether to buy a top-of-the-line private jet not long after August IV became CEO, when they should have been figuring out how to save Budweiser. The company’s board of directors got stuck trying to mediate their arguments, and I doubt that had been in their job descriptions. I was also surprised at how close Anheuser-Busch came to merging with Modelo to try to save itself, and at how that all ultimately fell apart. I had covered this deal as a journalist and had known the whole time that the two companies were talking, but I hadn’t known they were just inches from the finish line.

Did you run into any hurdles as you worked to uncover everything that happened behind the scenes?
I wasn’t worried about getting access to key people on Wall Street who were involved in the takeover. I’d known many of them for years. But I was nervous about the reception I’d get from insiders at Anheuser-Busch. I figured the relationship between August III and August IV would be the toughest thing to explore because people had been so closed-mouthed about it in the past, but that was one of the angles my sources were the most eager to talk about. Those two guys are fascinating characters, and I think the people who had witnessed some of their more outrageous moments felt they deserved to be brought to light as part of the story. I got the sense, in general, that this book was a chance for catharsis for some people. The way it all went down is just too fascinating to sweep under the rug with the rest of the mess from the economic crash.

Is this the story of The Busch family dynasty imploding? If so, in what way?
It depends on how you look at it. Adolphus Busch might roll over in his grave if he knew Budweiser was being brewed by Brazilians. But the Busch family hadn’t actually controlled Anheuser-Busch for years – many people just thought they still did. Some family members made hundreds of millions of dollars on this deal. They’re so rich now that it’s almost incomprehensible. That’s not a bad consolation prize.

Was the takeover inevitable? And what are the implications now that such a beloved American icon is being run by a foreign company?
If Anheuser-Busch hadn’t arrogantly ignored what was going on in the rest of the world, it wouldn’t have been inevitable. But the company focused far too heavily on America, as if this is the only place where people drink beer. Now, thousands of workers have lost their jobs, beer prices are higher, and you have a bunch of Brazilians running around in Missouri. The company has even started charging for Clydesdale appearances. That Bud Light you drank last weekend was brewed by a Brazilian number-cruncher. The big question is whether that actually matters in a globalized world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific character-driven book with drama and pathos
MacIntosh's book is a fascinating look behind the scenes of a story of an American business tragedy. When InBev started looking around for a target for its efforts at globalization, Annheuser Busch was ripe for the picking. The author details why with a reporter's detailed interviews and a novelist's approach to storytelling! It is a compelling book not to be missed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting story about both the takeover and the dysfunctional family
Julie MacIntosh's book was an inside view of both the hostile takeover and the dysfunctional Busch family.

The book reads like a novel and after the second chapter, I couldn't put it down.

Her character development and fascinating stories were terrific.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Page turner
Dethroning the King is well researched and well written. It is pretty unbelievable that a non-fiction book can be written in such a way that you can't put it down, but MacIntosh has managed to do just that.I enjoyed the depth the book goes into in describing the cast of characters which are, as you may expect, larger than life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, truthful writing that is also incredibly entertaining!
You won't put this book down. It may take several sittings, but this is a story so well told that you can't stop reading! The InBev transaction with AB is a fraction of what this book is really about...the characters are what drive this story. I highly recommend Dethroning the King!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book! If you like Michael Lewis you'll love Julie Macintosh.
This is an awesome book and should have lots of crossover appeal. It's written in a way that sucks in the diehard business types, but doesn't leave the average person confused. People here in St. Louis are buzzing about the potential that this could become a hit move (like the blind side for lewis). This is a drama full of interesting characters and fascinating stories...future best seller! ... Read more

Why Should I Upgrade to Office 2008 for Macintosh?

Author Jim Elferdink talks about what’s new in Office 2008 for Macintosh. If you’re still using Office 2004, you’ll find some great reasons to upgrade. Jim also fills you in on some cool features that Office for Windows can’t match, and why you may not need to invest in iWork!

What are the best new features that will make folks want to upgrade to Office 2008?
Publishing Layout view. If you use Word to create formatted documents like letters and brochures, you’ll find it so much easier to do now in the new Publishing Layout view than in the old Page Layout view. Publishing Layout view is actually quite similar to Pages; both are very usable. It’s a huge boon for Word people—if you haven’t bought Pages, now you won’t have to!
MyDay. I really enjoy Entourage’s MyDay feature. Assuming you’re not working on a laptop that doesn’t have screen space to spare, I recommend keeping MyDay open in the corner of your screen. That’s what I do! It helps me keep track of my appointments and schedule. If you’ve got appointments every 20 minutes or just a lot going on in your day, it’s great to have it all at a glance. It also helps you remember to go pick up the kids. (And you can feel superior to your Windows friends. There’s nothing resembling MyDay in Office for Windows.) Project Center. Entourage’s Project Center has been streamlined and beautified for 2008, but it’s still very underutilized. It takes a little extra effort to learn, but once you’ve got it up and running, if you’re doing any kind of a project that involves Office documents or even files from other programs, it’s a great timesaver. It lets you keep shortcuts to all these documents, plus email related to the project, in one window. The Project Center makes it easy to categorize email, contacts, notes, and documents. Things don’t get lost, and you don’t have to worry about Mac OS X labels and other ways to categorize things. (Office for Windows also has nothing like the Project Center.)
Formula Builder. In Excel, one of the greatest new features is the formula builder. If you use Excel much for formulas at all, especially more complicated ones, it’s really a timesaver. It helps you get those things created and working much faster than you could do before.
Elements Gallery. The Elements Gallery concept is really great because it carries over from one program to the other, gives the programs a consistent feel. If you’re using a lot of templates or AutoShapes, you’ll find it a quick way to get at all that stuff. You could do all these things before, but it was a lot harder to find what you were looking for.

So, are there any disadvantages to upgrading to Office 2008?
Publishing Layout view can be frustratingly slow on G4 Macs, especially when you’re trying to move layout elements around onscreen. I would only use it on an Intel Mac. The same caveat holds true for PowerPoint; it’s hard to move things around. But the rest of the suite works great on faster G4 machines.
Office 2008 uses the same new, XML-based file format as Office 2007 for Windows. It’s great not to have to worry when someone with Office 2007 on a PC sends you something. Office 2008 can open those documents right up. But now when you send documents to Mac folks who haven’t upgraded, they won’t be able to open them! Once you upgrade to Office 2008, you’ve got to be aware that not everyone else has, and (unless you have a real need to use the XML format) set your Save options (in Preferences) to the older format so there won’t be problems with your attachments.
Then there’s the macro problem. Any macros you wrote in earlier versions of Office use the Visual Basic programming language (VBA), and they won’t work in Office 2008! If you’ve written a lot of macros for yourself, you’ll have to stick with Office 2004 until you have time to rewrite them in AppleScript.

What do you like best about "Office 2008 for Macintosh: The Missing Manual?"
I’m happy with the way this book turned out. I think it covers everything you need to use this really powerful suite of programs for all your work. One chapter I’m particularly fond of, and which I think is missing from every other PowerPoint book I’ve looked at, is Chapter 15—Planning Great Presentations. It helps you prepare for your presentation and shows you how to use PowerPoint for its true purpose. PowerPoint isn’t doing the presentation—you are. You’re the star of the show! Unfortunately, too many people think it’s the other way around. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty elementary -not sufficient for big projects
Office is a lot to cover in one volume, with the result that this is a pretty lowest common denominator book.If you want to learn the basics, it's fine.If you are trying to lay out a book using Word, this guide does not provide nearly enough detail.

For instance, it describes Word's automatic list/numbering functions without giving the caution, mentioned widely across the web, that these functions are very buggy, and should absolutely be avoided when producing large documents, such as books. They can result in file corruption.

So ... if you don't know anything about Office, you could learn a lot here. But if you are using Office to do important work, perhaps for your livelihood, look elsewhere.

(In my fifteen year experience using Office, Excel and PowerPoint are much more complicated than Word is, so if the Word section of the book is oversimplified, I can only assume the others are as well.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Help for a non-geek
Have not had a chance to review the entire book but have found answers to questions I have had.I know there are the "help" screens within the computer system, but I work better with something tangible that I can touch, yellow highlight, and place "post-its".

4-0 out of 5 stars Great manual, but hard to use on Kindle
I bought this on the Kindle because there was something I was trying to do that I wanted help with right away, but there seems not to be the full index that would be in the print version -- the search function is very cumbersome in a book this large. In addition, it's slow to magnify the illustrations, and even magnified they are not that easy to read compared with a printed copy.

This is a useful manual, but in my view the Kindle version is a lousy substitute for the printed text. I've since learned that there is an online version that can be used for free for a limited time -- if I had known that, I could have used it while waiting for the printed version to come; as it is, I'm going to grit my teeth and buy the printed version.

Even though I consider the Kindle version inadequate, though, I've read enough to be sure that this is a fine manual, just one that has enough in it that flipping through pages (and consulting a real index) will be preferable to reading on the Kindle (I love the Kindle for novels or ordinary nonfiction, but I don't find it acceptable for this sort of reference work).

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect companion for soft.
This books is a must-have one in hand if you use office 2008 for mac.

It's easy to use and depicts in detail every features of software.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only for people looking to do complex stuff
If you are new to Macs (as I am) or new to Office (there probably aren't many of those folks around these days), this book is not for you.The author assumes that a) you know OS X very well; and b) you know the Windows version of Office very well.I was looking for a book that would quickly get me up and running in Office 2008 for Mac after I recently bought my first iMac.This book was definitely not what I needed. He has no explanation of some of the simple stuff I need to know, such as how to create new folders.Apparently, it doesn't work the way is does with Office for Windows, where you can create a new folder as part of the process of saving a file.Or if it does work that way, it's not evident.A couple of the other reviews note other simple stuff that he doesn't bother to explain. His intended audience is apparently people who have fairly complex documents to create and who need to know how do that on a Mac after having already become familiar with OS X.If that describes you, this book may be useful. What's a bit misleading is that some of these Missing Manual books actually do lead you through the basics (I'm thinking here of the iPhone book in particular).I should probably have bought the For Dummies book, which is what I'm about to do. ... It is hard to believe this book is now over 20 years old. Guy Kawasaki does a marvelous job of conveying key traits of effective "Macintosh Way" companies and managers. The key, really, is to do the right thing, the right way. Seems common sense enough, but even 20 years later, it appears as elusive as ever.

The book is extremely well written, engaging, relevant and funny. The technology/product focus has shifted somewhat over time, and Guy holds to the "Field of Dreams" build it and they will come mentality that has led Apple to success over and over again, usually from the brink of disaster.

Well worth the read and very relevant even today.

The book is extremely well written, engaging, relevant and funny. The technology/product focus has shifted somewhat over time, and Guy holds to the "Field of Dreams" build it and they will come mentality that has led Apple to success over and over again, usually from the brink of disaster.

While the techniques and discussion are "pre-internet", the principles are timeless.

Well worth the read and very relevant even today.

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but not necesarily useful
I like GK. He is a colorful character with great wit. Being a huge Apple fan I decide to get this book. I'm contemplating starting a small service biz and bought this book for useful tips but I got very little out of it. Maybe it was ground breaking when it came out.

The book is really targeted for people that work in large consumer based hardware/software products. The book was written prior to the internet so they way companies sell and promote biz as well as the tips are somewhat outdated. Examples: Apple uses distributors to sell. Well in the US and most developed markets that ins't really true anymore. Apple goes direct and in some cases through retailers that are also distributors. If you want to get into a company get someone internally to champion your resume. This is already well known. Also most companies referenced in the book no longer exist (Ex: Compuserve)or stopped supporting the macintosh platform long time ago. Also the last chapter on "dating" in a tech world while amusing felt like a filler to complete the book.

There are a few good nuggets on presentations, demos, and maximizing your investment in trade shows. This was interesting but very technology oriented. There are also some interesting perspectives on Apple history and characters which Apple followers would enjoy.

So If you have a small biz that isn't technology based or you are not a fan of Apple there isn't much here for you. ... Read more

Why is a design book in black and white?? Other than that, it has a lot of good information and easy to follow directions.

This book is used in my class as a reference book and I find myself reading it at home! Great book, teaches a lot of valuable information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Indesign CS5 book
This book is great to get started with indesign. But sometimes you learn how to do something that has multiple shortcuts. Like making a brochure. Before you know it, this book made you like a professional with Indesign.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book
I have always relied on Visual Quickstart books to get me up to speed on new programs at work...again this book comes through when needed.I like the new format of these books with the color pics and illustrations. This solves a problem with the old style books I always found annoying; when things were color coded and the books were only in b&w.Now I wish the programs worked the way they were supposed too, but that is the fault of the software developers. ... Product Description
With tools for photography, moviemaking, music creation, and more, Apple's iLife software can enhance just about any educational experience. The real power comes when all of these programs are used together, and in this fully updated book, longtime digital media guru Jim Heid, along with education expert Ted Lai, provide teachers with both the technical detail they need to work with the software (including an interactive tour of the iLife '09 suite) and the lesson plans and projects they need to get students using the tools creatively and effectively.

Teachers learn by doing as the book steps them through projects that teach iLife basics. They can then choose from among full lessons or mini lessons (that can be taught in an afternoon or just over a day or two). The lessons include projects to share that knowledge with students, student tip sheets, and more. This book is beautifully illustrated with updated coverage that includes the latest products in iLife '09 (now available for US$79): iPhoto '09 (including the revolutionary new Faces and Places features that allows users to organize their photos based on who's in them); iMovie '09 (including new Animated Travel Maps that enhance vacation movies with eye-catching animations); GarageBand '09; iWeb '09; and more. These amazing applications bring out the creative spirit in everyone. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars teaching guide
This is a pretty good book and I like it along with Mac Genius and another book I have. The lesson plans were not as good as I had expected- I don't teach WITH multimedia, multimedia is WHAT I teach so finding more direct lessons is a challenge. However if you want to use it to enhance another subject I recommend using it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, creative, practical classroom guide!
This book is extremely useful and is full of ideas to make the best out of iLife 09.Jim Heid is my favorite Mac author.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sure Cat's MEOW!
Clear, detailed information. Notes on important steps to remember or to refer back to. It is still a bit on the pricey side; but the time it saves makes up for it and the shipping was free (I consider it included then I feel better about the overall price ;-)

A reference that is well worth having on my bookshelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars iLife 09 classroom book
Very well written, easy to follow, learning disk included to follow along with lessons.High recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars One For Every Classroom and Maybe Your Home
Peachpit Press has inserted a complete "The Macintosh iLife '09" by Jim Heid in the middle of book about using the Macintosh iLife '09 in the classroom by Ted Lai.

Jim Heid is the author of the top selling Macintosh iLife book. He also helped Apple develop their excellent tutorials which he refers to in the book.

The Macintosh iLife '09shows how to use and get more use out of the integratediPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand, and iWeb. applications. It has become the best selling iLife book because it is very good. After reviewing the book for our Macintosh user group, I bought it. I am currently enjoying using it to increase my use of my photos, and recommend it highly. You probably have read about"The Macintosh iLife '09" in other reviews or have seen earlier versions of this fine book.

Ted Lai is the Director of Technology and Media Services at the Fullerton School District and an Apple Distinguished Educator. He has been called the PodPiper because of his lectures in the use of the iPod in education.

"The Macintosh iLife '09 in the Classroom" begins with Ted Lai's thoughts about integrating technology in the classroom. He talks about using iLife to engage students in learning activities that do more than enhance learning, they transform it. He writes in language that teachers understand, telling them to begin with the end in mind and think about what they really want the students to learn. He advises teachers to start small and describes mini lessons that are easy ways for teachers to design digital projects and learn iLife applications.

iLife's integration and careful design makes it easy. The teacher should know what the menus do, and not be afraid when a student asks a technology question that the teacher cannot answer. The teacher can empower the students, saying "I am sure you or another student can figure it out and show us how to do it." Create success through publishing.

Ted Lai covers the software and hardware tools that can help you transform the learning process. He describes how to develop full lesson plans, create the project, refine the project, and publish it. He does all that in just 30 pages.

Next, the book contains a full complete copy of "The Macintosh iLife '09" by Jim Heid.

Then, Ted Lai completes his book providing 13 Mini-Lessons he calls Appetizers, and 5 Full Lessons called Entrees.

The Appetizers include descriptions, steps, and extras for creating engaging projects. One of the 13 Appetizers uses Text Edit or Pages, the built in iSight camera and Photo Booth, iPhoto, and a Color Printer for a project called The Monster in Me.

The Entrees are full lesson plans such as those teachers are familiar with but with iLife technology difference. One of the 5 Entrees uses Macintosh computers, a video camera, props and costumes as appropriate, a tripod and optional microphones, and iMovie to create a new 30 to 60 second commercial to sell a product or idea. Ted Lai provides advice to limit the amount of time required to complete the projects.

I believe every classroom should have Macintosh computers with iLife, iWork, and "The Macintosh iLife '09 in the Classroom." If you are interested in education or creating projects for your children, you might want to buy this book instead of "The Macintosh iLife '09." ... Read more

This Visual QuickStart Guide uses a combination of task-based instruction and strong visuals to teach beginning and intermediate users how to create great-looking images with Photoshop. Best-selling authors Elaine Weinmann and Peter Lourekas take readers step by step through all of today's Photoshop essentials: from importing digital photos through basic color manipulation and image correction to painting, masking, using filters, and more. Hot topics like working with Camera Raw, using the improved Photomerge command (that aligns and blends layers automatically) to stitch together images, making selections using the new Quick Selection tool and Refine Edge feature, and Smart Filters are all covered.

Both beginning users, who want a thorough introduction to the topic, and more advanced users, who are looking for a handy reference, will find what they need here. In this edition, using a fresh new design and now illustrated in full color, the authors have streamlined the text by focusing on the most efficient means of accomplishing a task, rather than explaining all possible methods. By the end of the book, users will have a solid foundation for working in Photoshop CS3. Additional intermediate topics can be found in the author's follow-on book: Photoshop CS3: Visual QuickPro Guide.

The book was delivered ahead of time and it was in a good condition as described by the seller.......Keep it up!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars a good, visual guide
This book was a required textbook for a Photoshop class. I really appreciated the extensive screen shots, so I could see exactly what the author was talking about. It was a little confusing, however, that all the pictures are from a Mac version of Photoshop and I was on a PC. The locations appeared to be mostly the same, but the menu style is different. It's a good resource to teach yourself Photoshop or to supplement a course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginning
Instructor changed books but plan on referring to this one when I run into any problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop CS3 Book
Anyone who has even opened the Photoshop program understands why a guide book is alomst necessary. The depths of what this program can do would likely go unseen by anyone who has not had some form of formal training or instruction. A great book for anyone who wants to do some really cool or technical things with their photos.

Very useful contents for FileMaker Pro 8.
Hardly can expect the issuance of FileMaker Pro 9 for Windows & Macintosh.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only useful if you are an absolute beginner
the title says it all really, if you have never used Filemaker before you will find this useful to get started on very basic databases. If you've used versions of Filemaker prior to v7 you will get a couple of tips about the differences in creating relational databases BUT this is quite clearly described in the free guide that comes with FileMaker. If you have used fileMaker 7 or above and know how to create a relational database with it you won't get one single useful bit of information out of it.

It's really just an extended version of the Users Guide that comes with FileMaker - not worth buying. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It Is What It Is...
This is a good guide book for those who are ready to move into intermediate/expert level Flash skills. Its very brief, dry and straight forward. It isn't meant to be read as a fun way to learn. It's just one of those quick guide books for picking up skills in hurry. There's nothing fancy about it. It will probably be handy to have around for future reference I'm sure. Its a relatively thin book considering everything it covers. Its size is less intimidating than other books on this subject which makes it read a little easier and quicker. You'll be doing advanced design and programming right away with this whether you understand what you're doing or not. The Actionscript aspect of it feels a little too brief coming from someone without previous programming experience, but this did not surprise me. It introduces many basic programming functions a person needs to know but doesn't always go into depth on how it works or why. If understanding Actionscript 3.0 in depth is what you're after, I'd consider ActionScript 3.0: Visual QuickStart Guide. Stick with this with this book if you want to get a good, broad understanding of the general intermediate/expert aspects of Flash quickly and efficiently. For what it is, I think it's written better than most. It gets the job done but its not much fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flash CS4 Professional
There are a lot of Flash books on the market but this book seems to pack more into it than most. There is a lot of great information in each of the chapters.I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Start Here, Make Things Move!
This is another 4.5 star review - the Visual QuickPro Guides are a great series but I just cannot give technical book 5 stars. I also own Flash CS4 Professional for Windows and Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide by Katherine Ulrich.

Well written book - great visual design - quick for picking up the basics of Actionscript. If I could do it over again, I would start with this book to learn Actionscript. I know some rudimentary Java -- so Actionscript was familiar.

I don't read books cover to cover, especially technical books. I might have with this one (and might still) but didn't have time as I had a project to get done. I dipped in and out to get the key things that I thought I needed.

This book focuses on Frame Scripts for the most part, not creating Actionscript Classes -- I would look at Essential ActionScript 3.0 (Essential) or ActionScript 3.0 Bible if you need that. The most difficult thing I grappled with is understanding that some of the keywords for Frame Scripts are different than some of the keywords for Class based scripts. Got that now!

What I like about this book is that is focuses on the stuff that you are most likely to do with Flash. So I could get what I needed, try to apply it, and go back and forth. Without this book I would have never finished my project. It gave a great entry point into Actionscript and I fully intend to read it from cover to cover.

I've tried other books that make things move, such as ActionScript 3.0 Game Programming University -- but unlike those other books, Russel Chun's guide makes you understand what you are doing.

Again, great tip sections and further explanation guides. I'm still struggling with understanding some concepts -- but now I feel confident that I can -- there are very few books that make you feel that way.

Start here and Make Things Move! (and understand what you are doing!) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding. Fabulous, easy to read layout
What a great manual this is. Jim Heid uses a concise and precisely written double-page spread layout for each topic. Even better, he integrates the text with illustrations and screenshots to make it very easy to absorb. The book is a visual delight.

This simple and clear presentation does not mean there is no depth. He describes many important details and tricks that make the book a goldmine of information. He also provides excellent cross-references between pages to explore topics in detail. He suggests alternative approaches that can be taken (e.g. ways to publish, display, and archive photo collections) and discusses their pros and cons.

If only more manuals were written with this level of skill and care. Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Miss MacIntosh and The Accidental Tourist
This will be very short. As any devotee of Anne Tyler's The Accidental Tourist knows, MMMD finds its way into the main character's reading habits (and is even glimpsed, in faithful obeisance to the novel, as traveller William Hurt's reading matter in the movie adaptation of Anne Tyler's novel.) I personally plan to have it at my side on my journey through eternity when I am laid to rest in my casket. (I have been reading and re-reading it for the past 17 years.)

"Farewell to the dream of the past, for it should be laid bare like a corpse before my eyes, and I should see that there is nothing which does not bear the capacity to surprise and shock us with the absence of all those qualities and properties we had supposed - perhaps, too, with the presences of others."(MMMD)

Or as The Accidental Tourist might muse:

"My mother had always wanted to die while travelling - as then she would never completely die - for every traveller dies merely by passing through a city, and none will know that landscape which he passes through in the long night. Death is that which is caused by our partial knowledge."(MMMD)

5-0 out of 5 stars This is Volume Two of the Lush Novel by M. Young
Just want to let buyers know that ISBN 015660793x, Harvest/HBJ, is Volume Two of Marguerite Young's Miss MacIntosh, My Darling, the culmination of the work.

Anais Nin
"This is a search for reality through a maze of illusions and fantasy and dreams, ultimately asserting in the words of Calderon: 'Life is a dream.'"

Kurt Vonnegut
"Marguerite Young is unquestionably a genius."

William Goyen, New York Times Book Review, 9/12/65
"A work of stunning magnitude and beauty. . . . The book's mysterious readability is effected through enchantment and hypnosis. Its force is cumulative; its method is amassment, as in the great styles of Joyce or Hermann Broch or Melville or Faulkner. . . . One of the most arresting literary achievements in our last 20 years. . . . It is a masterwork."

Lillian Smith, Chicago Tribune
"An extraordinary book by a woman possessed of a breathtaking verbal virtuosity. She also has quality of heart. . . . There are times when her pages surge and beat on the heart and imagination like great music; other times when it shimmers motionless like an ancient Hindu painting."

Michael Dirda, Washington Post Book World, 3/21/93
"The prose is lyric, striking and memorable."

L.A. Reader, 2/93
This encyclopedic novel addresses the question of illusion, as Young--whose epic vision and exquisite prose are truly awesome--dissects the essence of reality and ruminates on where it can be found."

Belles Lettres, Winter 1993
"[A]n ambitious work of gorgeous fiction, written in waves of lush, imagistic, even humorous language. . . . This is a work of genius."

About the Author
A descendent of Brigham Young, Marguerite Young was born in Indiana in 1909 and moved to New York City in the 1940s. A respected literary figure and Greenwich Village eccentric, Young associated with writers from Richard Wright to Dylan Thomas to Truman Capote, Carson McCullers, Thornton Wilder and Gertrude Stein. Besides her legendary and lengthy novel Miss Macintosh, My Darling (originally published in 1965), Young published two works of poetry, Prismatic Ground (1937) and Moderate Fable (1944); a work of nonfiction, Angel in the Forest (1945); and a collection of stories, essays and reviews, Inviting the Muses (1944), before her death in 1995. Her monumental biography of Eugene Debs, on which she worked for 30years, was published posthumously.

1-0 out of 5 stars You have got to be kidding!
I started to read this 1200-page book on the recommendation of my psychoanalyst. I was lost by the middle of page 2, and gave up entirely at page 17. It's a wonder I made it that far. Reading this book was like swimming upside down in a vat of peanut oil. Everything seems like it's inverted and moving in slow motion. Most of the time I wasn't even sure who was talking. I really want to meet the person who has read this book all the way to the end. He/she probably also competes in "iron man" triathalons and peruses the tax code for pleasure. Not my cup of tea!

In fact, I didn't.It was impenetrable. There was almost no dialog and nothing much seemed to happen.Since I couldn't make any headway at the beginning, I tried starting at various places throughout the book.I couldn't get anywhere. My eyes glazed over.I suppose that means it is a great work beyond my comprehension.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cult Fiction
The admirers of this book form a cult, as I think even they would admit. Like any other cult, they hold certain beliefs that make perfect sense to them, yet strike the uninitiated as, shall we say, nuts.

The author, Marguerite Young, was the subject of an issue of the Review of Contemporary Fiction a good number of years ago. A respectful interviewer asked her why the character of Miss Macintosh was missing her hair, a limb, and several other useful things. Ms. Young replied, "Because everything is lost."

If this strikes you as a pearl of Zarathustrian wisdom, I suppose these 1,200 pages of "oceanic" prose, ebbing and flowing away with a charmingly feminine disregard for such stodgy concerns as structure and narrative momentum, just might be your meat. If it seems instead the self-caressing delusion of a profoundly second-rate word-spiller, you might want to pass by the brightly-clad strangers shaking their tambourines in your face and make your way to a church with a more substantial following. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars For advanced PS users
If you are new to Photoshop, be aware that this book is not for beginners. It does not give you step-by-step directions on how to use certain functions. The video tutorial is very helpful to close some of these gaps. I consider myself a rookie and I had to pull some guidance from the web. Nevertheless I do not regret to have purchased this book since one will get very quickly familiar with the basic functionality of PS and then the books becomes a valuable source for trying out more advanced features.

1-0 out of 5 stars rip off cost
Hi, I think it is a total rip off to give less than one US Dollar discount for the electronic version, considering the saving of production cost.
Now that is exciting the publishing industry. Profits from dummies.

5-0 out of 5 stars An accompanying DVD offers two hours of video tutorials and images from the book to work with alongside text
Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Photographers is a fine reference offering an extensive revision of photographer Martin Evening's celebrated Photoshop 'bible'. It's been fully updated for CS4 and is packed with tutorials, illustrations and screen shots, tips on how to use a digital camera and how to get a handle on CS4's new features. An accompanying DVD offers two hours of video tutorials and images from the book to work with alongside text, making this an especially important acquisition for classroom or supplemental textbook study.

3-0 out of 5 stars Packaging OK; Packing NOT
Book arrived today. About the first 20 pages from the inside front cover were severely bent over (dog-ear) and creased. The plastic heat shrink wrapping around the book and cardboard stiffener just reinforced the dog-ear pages and creases during packaging. I bought the book for personal use but the PACKING condition would have been reviewed as UNSATISFACTORY if I bought this book as a gift. Packaging protection and size were satisfactory but the PACKING of the book itself was not. I gave a three stars because the book itself is very useful and a great Photoshop CS4 reference.

2-0 out of 5 stars Book's condition
For every books that I purchased from Amazon, dented marks can be visible on at least one corner (if not two or more) of the book. Books that are shipped from Amazon do not provide sufficient padding to secure the book, leaving free space for it to move around during the delivery.

As for this book, the dented corners are more significant because of it's weight. Unfortunately, I cannot provide you any photos of the dent since it is already being wrapped. I take care of my books seriously and all of them are wrapped on received or purchased. To be honest, the reason for me to purchase from Amazon is merely because it is cheaper than those selling in major bookstores in Malaysia.

My confidence level on the way Amazon ship their good is very low. Therefore, I don't expect to receive a perfect condition of the books on arrival. And true enough, the book that I recently received has dented marks on it. If I were to purchase a Canon lens for my DSLR from Amazon, I am worried that I would have received a cracked or non-functional lens.

For price wise, I find the books/items that Amazon sell is much cheaper than similar books/items found in Malaysia. But, the way Amazon handle the goods is so bad that I will not even think of buying a more fragile or expensive items from Amazon. I am sure those items will not survived the journey!

2 stars was given for this item review:
1) Cheap
2) Books arrived on expected condition (I am expecting it to be dented)

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful but needs updating
A very useful reference book, especially if your Mac is earlier than September 1995. Of course a lot of the information about software and hardware in general is applicable to later machines as well. I would have given it a 10 when it was published first, but now I only give it an 8 because it has not been updated. I would hope that a new edition will be published that includes the many Macs and Mac clones brought out since August 1995.

4-0 out of 5 stars In depth coverage of the Mac makes this a valuable resource.
Having problems with your Mac? Need to add a video card, install RAM, or just wondering how all those components work together? MacWeek Upgrading and Repairing Your Mac has a wealth of useful information for the novice and pro alike.

Lisa Lee discusses everything from troubleshooting to choosing software to buying the right Mac. Her writing is generally accessible and easy to understand. She tackles difficult and "techie" subjects with aplomb. Most techniques for fixing the Mac are here, though I did notice a few curious omissions (for example, only one reference to zapping the PRAM and no details about how to accomplish it or when doing so might be helpful. There was also no mention of replacing a dead backup battery, which has become a common fix for aging Macs.) I found the index incomplete and occasionally incorrect, a problem for any reference tome. Still, the book serves well as a fix-it guide.

Mac books become quickly outdated with Apple's introduction of new models and System software, and this guide is no exception. If you have a newer machine, check that it is covered before you shell out for this volume. Minor caveats aside, I recommend it to anyone who needs hardware help with their Mac.

5-0 out of 5 stars ANYTHING I need to know is in this book.
This book has aided me greatly in configuring, installing and repairing every aspect of the Mac that I am at all familiar with from my experience during the past 15+ years. ... Read more
