... 1-0 out of 5 stars Experiencing MIS
I had to buy this book for my Information Technology for Business Majors class. It's written to a second grade level and is extremely boring. The first chapter has key terms like "people" "processes" and other simple concepts. Basically this book was written for morons. I hate that a 200 level course is reduced to such a simple level.

The videos that come with the professor edition are also boring, and repeat word-for-word what the book says.

If you are a student, brace yourself for a dumbed-down class that you will struggle to stay awake in.

If you are a professor, please don't use this book, and teach your class to a college level instead of reducing your standards to accompany simple-minded students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Bad Questions
The material of this book is pretty decent, but the wording of the questions can be relatively unclear at times, making you wonder, what exactly are they asking sometimes.

Product Description
Not since the heyday of Richard Nixon has there been a president more controversial and polarizing than George W. Bush. From his arrival in office through what many still regard as one of the most flagrant miscarriages of electoral justice in modern history to the long road to Iraq, Bush has been vilified by liberals as ardently as he has been embraced by the neoconservatives who have been the driving force of his administration. Both Eric Alterman and Mark Green are known for their doggedness in researching the media and political figures, and what they discover in the case of Bush is a consistent pattern of double standards, misrepresentation, and contradictions. The Book on Bush methodically critiques administration policy from the standpoint of its truthfulness as well as its merit, with the characteristic wit of both writers.Amazon.com Review
While other liberal-minded books, written by everyone from documentary filmmakers to political strategists to comedians, have been broadly critical of the entire early 21st-century conservative universe, Eric Alterman and Mark J. Green have narrowed their focus to the man living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. And unlike some of their contemporaries, they choose to largely eschew the clever metaphors and whimsical storytelling to get right at their pointed criticisms of George W. Bush, whom they accuse of being less than honest with the American people while serving the interests of large corporations, the religious right, and neoconservative ideologues. Such charges, by themselves, are so commonplace by this point as to be unremarkable but Alterman and Green provide voluminous, detailed research and come at the case with the vigor of prosecuting attorneys certain of a defendant's guilt or maybe a pair of exceptionally ambitious graduate students ready to present a final dissertation. They contrast sections of Bush's public statements, especially campaign rhetoric, that seem to strike a centrist, conciliatory tone with evidence of his actions that veer hard right and contradict the very things he had said. Some of Bush's words come off more as simple talking points on complex issues than outright deception, and the authors do stop short of calling Bush a liar, but even in these situations, the president still comes off as either out of touch or disingenuous. And though some of their supporting material comes from opinion pieces in publications like the New Republic, serving more to echo the authors' perspective than document it, there's plenty more from objective sources and raw factual data. Liberals will find plenty in The Book on Bush to arm them in arguments against conservatives and they'll have the evidence to make their case. --John Moe ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The left trying to lie about the best President in 5 decades...
This author should research the Clintons if he wants to find liars and numerous accounts of misleading the American public... All Bill ever did was lie, from day one to the very end, and he left the White House laughing in the faces of all Americans...
The loosing left should leave this man alone, he is the most incredible President that this country has seen in the last 50 years...
Liberals are the seeds of Socialists, and Socialists are the roots of Communists... If you do not like living in the RIGHT country... then leave...
Make the change today: THINK RIGHT, GO RIGHT and BE RIGHT...

4-0 out of 5 stars Our Son In White House is an Honor Student
This book is written by two progressive authors with a report card on different subjects for President Bush who advocated NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND.The subjects affect all Americans in economics, environment, civil liberty, healthcare and education.Despite his grades, he managed to have White House lease extended for four more years. That must be democracy and politics.

This book showed George came from the right wing with a prayer to serve the trinity of religious right, corporate business and neocons.George is a tough cowboy not to mess with.He shows America is no paper tiger to the Axis of evil. His top gun Mission Accomplished show was impressive after the shock and awe.

As Commander in Chief, George's policy affects rich & poor, faithful & secular, war & peace. This book helps you decide on the bumper sticker MY SON IN THE WHITE HOUSE DOES NOT DO HIS HOMEWORK IS AN HONOR STUDENT.

1-0 out of 5 stars An Insult to Minorities that is chilling in many other ways
I read this in passing at the new San Jose Main Public Library the other day.
These coauthors' writing is as harsh as Ann Coulter's but of an opposite persuasion. However, their use of citations and supporting documentation is lacking. It is mostly up to the reader to guess which points are supported by which references in the bibliography. There are no footnotes, just mere page number references.A great number of references are simply for the sprinklings of quotations used. The fact, that Alterman and Green are employed by any journal, is chilling and an insult for that employer.
Alterman, intending to attack "neocons," uses an example of voter intimidation in places like Baltimore where the "Get out the Vote" advertisments also say "...and take care of your oustanding warrants, overdue rent, etc..."Another example is one that persuades people to show up at the polls days after election day.[Incidentally, the book's issues like this are debatably related to the topic of President Bush...]
So much for the idea of a "well-informed electorate!"
Such voter intimidation is not just sad but almost laughable.
First, does anyone want to admit depending on a voter base of individuals who fall for intimidation like this? This was an insult to liberal causes! To think this was a great book, you too would probably fall for voter intimidations like these examples given by Alterman and Green.
Second, are these guys trying to tell us that a qualification, to be considered a minority, consists of being duped by garbage like this? What an insult to minorities!
Third, if these guys are responsible journalists, can they report on anybody of their own polity that might be doing something about the state of the electorate's information?

While Alterman and Green make this point on their own voter base being so inadequate with any base of knowledge, they are trying to make a point, by begging the question from the first page, that President Bush himself has a very inadequate base of knowledge.Worse yet, Alterman and Green propose that a bad state of knowledge is further demonstrated by President Bush's tendency to ask "stupid" questions.Perhaps all readers should reflect on whether it is better to have stupid questions asked than to have stupid results occur when nobody has the courage to ask stupid questions. And back to the concept of a "well-informed electorate," real education begins with real questions. It is too bad that Alterman and Green have evidently been too proud to ask any questions, starting with "Why did so and so ask such and such question?" instead of jumping to their conclusions.

Another example of Alterman and Green's points is that President Bush's tendency to leave the "details" to others is a weakness. It would have been more useful to their point to expound on how this balances one's own core competencies with those of others. It's an effective corporate strategy.Maybe journalists know nothing about that.

Alterman and Green's publication is a strike out for journalism.
If you are a proponent of progressiveness or of the idea of a "well-informed electorate," this book does not help either of these causes.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this....
This was one of the books I have read to understand what my opinion is about Bush.I puts into print the concepts, ideas and realities of the dichotomy of Bush.Politics to the fullest. No wonder this nation is so full of apathy.I love books like this that make you look deeper into subjects....

5-0 out of 5 stars And (Mis)leads the world: a view from the UK
American audiences might be forgiven for wondering what benefit a UK citizen could obtain from reading such a thorough and exhaustive dissection of the failures of Bush's domestic and foreign policy. But the fact remains that citzens of the world are in many respects the disenfranchised electorate of the United States. For as this book makes abundantly clear, as the world's only hyperpower, the US is in a position to dictate terms to every single person alive on the planet today. What the President says and does will impact everybody, whether we like it or not - and mostly, we do not.

The exposing of foreign policy flaws in the Middle East comes as no surprise; indeed the situation in Iraq today is exactly that predicted by the authors and their sources, only worse. But the revelation for a foreign reader such as myself was the extent to which the Bush administration is systematically asset stripping the nation of its entitlement in terms of education, health care, social services and the environment, whilst annexing yet more wealth for the top tier of American society and a cadre of handpicked cronies. The meticulous examination of federal tax policy and who really benefits was very informative and shocking in its audacity.

In spite of the measured and forceful arguments proposed by the authors, George W Bush was re-elected in November 2004.As an outsider, I find this completely perplexing since in my own country, the overwhelming majority of voters (had we been able) would have chosen the other candidate. But if you are an American beginning to see through the cracks in the surface and wish to know more about the motives and intentions of your government, I strongly recommend this book.In spite of its failure to prevent the re-election of this President it may still have a powerful influence over who gets to be the next one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Old Secrets Revealed
The `Foreword' explains the origin of MI-9, the agency who trained armed forces how to behave if captured, and how to send secret messages from prison camps. Later they helped to create MIS-X for American forces. Their mission was to conceal maps, cameras, and radio sets in innocent objects for prisoners of war. Today no records of MIS-X exist (p.xiii); they were all destroyed after the end of WW II. But a few were able to recall details to recreate this history. Three years after WW II ended they could not locate this information for the impending Korean War (p.2). Fort Hunt was set up close to Washington as an interrogation camp for enemy prisoners. This operation had the highest secrecy possible (p.15), greater than the A-bomb project (p.20).

Chapter 4 explains the fictitious charity groups and the parcels sent to POWs. The Post Office cooperated (p.31); so did the Ration Board and manufacturers (p.32). Once a POW guard accepted a bribe, he could be blackmailed to provide information (p.49). Red Cross parcels prevented starvation (p.54). The dollar figures date this book. You could travel from Washington to Cincinnati overnight by rail (p.105). There are no details on the four items needed for a transmitter (p.104). Detailed maps were hidden in a pack of playing cards (p.110). Chapter 13 tells how pistols were smuggled into Oflag 64. The planned break-out and rescue by B-17s was canceled as too risky. There was a danger in buying more than one camera (p.132). Germany banned radios for Allied POWs; America gave radios to German POWs for their education (p.159). Fliers had to carry pistols now for protection against civilians (p.161).

Colonel Spivey asked for bombing missions so he could determine the reason for high losses. Gunners were ignoring their gunsights (p.190)! A smuggled German-lettered typewriter was used to forge passes and IDs (p.191). As Germany was losing the war there were threats to murder the POWs (p.193). Shipments stopped in Nov 1944 because they expected the war to end soon, the POW camps were well-stocked, and German transportation was ruined. In Aug 1945 they were ordered to destroy all records. Food items went to the Salvation Army, clothes and games to Walter Reed. [If this story skimps at times its because there were no written records.]

The `Afterword' explains the origins of this book. He found the current location of the MIS-X Pentagon papers. But they were destroyed by a fire (p.213). Little is known about MIS-X activities in the Pacific theater. Unlike Europe, a Caucasian could not hide among Asian people, he had to stay hidden. Japan mistreated POWs even after being warned (p.219).

4-0 out of 5 stars What happened at Ft Hunt?
This book is a must read for those of us touched by Ft Hunt in some way. Also WW II and history buffs.

I grew up very close to Ft Hunt, and spent literally hundreds and hundreds of childhood hours there, riding bikes, exploring the fortifications, building dams on the little creeks, hiking the bridle trail (back when you could rent horses at the stables at the end of what's now Elkins Rd) and discovering all of its secret areas.Originally all of the buildings and fortifications in the area were secure, firmly boarded up with very stout 2x6's or 2x8's.But the "big" kids would find ways to break into these areas, and then we would all discover the remnants of what had been left behind when the military had given Ft Hunt to the National Park Service for recreational use.

The scenario was typically, the big kids would manage to pry a couple of the boards from a doorway. We "little" kids would come upon the opened doorway usually not more than about a day later, and of course be very excited to explore new areas...this was like Dungeons and Dragons but for real, where the (mostly) underground rooms were very intriguing. There were rumors of crates of rifles and even a secret tunnel under the Potomac to Ft Washington that we searched for relentlessly.

At the time Ft Hunt still had its original road system, and several large two story frame houses that had been officers' quarters. And there were all of the other buildings to house the facilities of a small military outpost. But no area was sacred from tenacious and unsupervised youths in search of adventure.

I brought home all kinds of things, like alarm buzzers, gas masks, and old electrical fixtures.I even brought home a baby skunk whose family I found living behind the concrete steps that led up to a one-story frame building we used to call the "schoolhouse".The skunk is another story though. At some point boards were removed from the schoolhouse doorway and very soon thereafter we little kids found the breach.

The schoolhouse contained a treasure unbelievable to a 10 year old's eyes.Looting was in season! There were all manner of research books (a complete set of Britannica from 1893), neat equipment, like a full Fairchild stereoscope and air photos, 35mm films, etc.Much to my parents chagrin, I began carting home as much as I could. My excuse for stealing?Well, all this stuff was abandoned, and if I didn't take it, the next guy would. If only I knew what the real treasure was at the time! This was definitely some the stuff used in the MIS-X operation.

After the schoolhouse door was breached, it couldn't have been more than a couple of days, a bulldozer came, pushed the schoolhouse into a pile, and it was torched.(This happened in about 1960, which disputes the claims that all "evidence" was destroyed within the decade of the 1940's.)In all of our time having our great adventures, we had never seen any action taken over anything, but the schoolhouse was different. It happened fast.I can remember, because I wanted to retrieve some more loot, but we got to watch the bulldozer instead. And The Escape Factory explains why.It also explains why, when I was a child, I would hear stories about German soldiers who had been brought to Ft Hunt for interrogation.Apparently more than one had escaped and showed up wandering the area, looking for food.Reportedly one was employed at a nearby farm for several months.

For years I wondered about many of the things I had run across at Ft Hunt. Now the story has been told.

4-0 out of 5 stars A first American view
One of the first American views of the MIS-X program.Previously the British have written about their experiences from the MI-9 and MI-19 perspective.Much of the work of this unit has been still kept classified. There was some unit activity in Southeast Asia and elsewhere in Japanesecontrolled POW camps. My grandfather was one of the unit's commanders andlater CO of Fort Hunt at the end of the war.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful but incomplete history of a Super Secret Activity
MIS-X was the branch of U.S. Army G-2 which was in charge of furnishingescape aids and aiding the active escape measures of U.S. service personnel captured by the enemy in aWW II and kept in POW camps. The"ratlines" or escape networks were often run in cooperation withthe British agency MIS-9 (cf M.R.D. Foote's book MIS-9). As in other casesthe British were the "big brothers" who taught our clandestineoperators. This was as much true of the brotherhood of the British SOE andthe United State's OSS as the brotherhood of MIS-9 and MIS-X.
Why theoperations of the E and E agencies required such highly kept secrecy, lasting in this country until the last ten years, was the necessity for theGermans not having even a hint of the special equipment smuggled in via RedCross relief packages, all unknowingly by the latter of course, nor couldthe Germans be allowed to penetrate the "ratlines". Of course, the latter did happen, with unfortunate results to our side but they neverknew of MIS-X.
After the war ended the headquarters of MIS-X which wascolocated with the POW interrogation facilities at Fort Hunt, Va, was razedto the ground and plowed under and the heavy non-destructible equipmentshipped to salvage yards and junked (presses, etc) and the soft goods suchas escape checkerboards and radios concealed in baseballs were all to bedestroyed.
Five years later when the Korean War broke out, theinstitutional memory was gone. A few heavily sanitized but still classifieddocuments held in outside files ended up in the Suitland facility of theFederal Records Office but few knew what they meant and they did not talk.Compared to the Manhattan Project or the breaking of codes this project wasa ten compared to their eight.
Although most of the WW II prisoners incontact with MIS E&E (both services) were air personnel the agency waspart of the Army Chief of Staff's G-2, Intelligence, not Army Air Corps intelligence. Thus the individualsassigned to MIS were from many branches of the Army.
Shoemaker himself spent mostof hisservice time at Fort Hunt in support and development. His book is mostlyfrom memory with the aid of some of the highly chopped up documents. Thestory in this account is excellent for the war againt Germany. It isincomplete and inaccurate for the war against Japan.
First, the Japanesewere not interested in taking care of prisoners except where they could bemade to work, second, there was no place to go if you did escape, except inthe Phillipines, and third, MIS-X did not operate in the SW Pacific orCentral Pacific theatres and most of the CBI Theatre was either Britishresponsibility or uncovered. In China the MIS-X operated independently. Foran account by the man in charge of that unit see the recent work byWichtrich, MIS-X: Top Secret. (also on this site)
Lastly, the "jungleliving" and other courses given to personnel shot down in the tropicalareaswere given by theatre personnel and were organizationally theresponsibility of the Army Air Force's Air Surgeon General and the flightsurgeons of the Naval Aviation forces. "Survival" in primitiveareas was not an MIS responsibility.

4-0 out of 5 stars A look into how we helped our men in German POW camps.
A differnt look at the POW situation suring the secondworld war. This is the story of a small but efficentoperation to smuggles supplies to American POW's inside camps in Germany. What was smuggled, how it was done, and how the prisoners communicated their wishes back home without German knowledge. This is really James Bond type stuff in World War II.A nice read with good information. ... Product Description
Young children become confused and hurt when their parents constantly argue, then decide to divorce. This sensitively written book—written in Spanish for Spanish-speaking boys and girls— assures children that they are in no way responsible for their parents’ inability to get along together. It lets kids know that although one parent chooses to move away from the home, both parents continue to love their little boy or girl. Both Mom and Dad will continue to spend happy times with them. Even very young children have concerns and anxieties, and Tell Somebody Books are written and illustrated especially for them. Parents are advised to read these books aloud while their preschooler listens and looks at illustrations of the boys and girls in each story. Many children in early grades will be able to read the stories for themselves. Tell Somebody Books encourage children to explore their feelings, and then to speak openly about things that trouble them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations and wonderful prose for my one year old
We received this book as a gift and adore it.The illustrations are absolutely precious. So beautiful with wonderful little details. The prose is simple and repetitive ("I learned to ___ from my friend the ___") and highlights many animals my 14-month-old is learning about. This is a book that he asks for several times a day.Oh, and I love the addition of the Spanish as well!

2-0 out of 5 stars Item misleading
The book title showed words in english and spanish, leading us to believe it was written in both languages. It was to be a present for a little Peruvian boy just learning english. We were disappointed to find it was only written in english.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely story and beautiful illustrations
My daughter and I read this book over and over. The illustrations are beautiful and many of the actions of the main character are fun to act out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning
This is a nice book for teaching/learning Spanish. My only surprise was the illustrations - they look Japanese in style, to me, and I would've thought it would make more sense of they were Hispanic. And the little girl barely smiles in any of the illustrations, which is a shame. A nice book overall, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars "My Friends" is a sweet treat...
This is a lovely book with the most wonderful illustrations. Since it was so highly recommended by our niece's 2-year-old daughter, Elle, I bought it for my 1-year-old grandson, Max. He was charmed. It does come as a board book, which is probably a smarter choice for a child this young.

3-0 out of 5 stars Whose Toys?
Emberley, R.(2002).My ToysMis Juguetes.Boston:Little, Brown and Company.

This dual language board book shows images of common toys and includes the name in both English and Spanish. As far as concept books go, it will be more amusing to the wee little ones than most. The majority of the toys are age appropriate and the illustrations colorful.

It is worth noting that on all of the pages, English is privileged over Spanish by appearing above the Spanish translation (although, the Spanish is in bold).

This is one book in a larger series of dual-language concept books.Other topics are animals, clothes, colors, food, etc.

Activities to Do with the Book:

This is a good book to help students with labeling and to help children with second language acquisition--not only with the toy vocabulary, but also with colors, shapes and shapes.

Also, for four or five-year-olds who feel bored, a teacher or parent could open to a random page to help children figure out an activity to do.

2-0 out of 5 stars Improper translation, many corrections needed
Another reviewer had commented on a myriad of errors in this series of board books. He did not comment on this one specifically, so I purchased it. I am disappointed in the quality of the translation, hence my rating, because it seems the editor/publisher did absolutely no checking on the correctness of the Spanish words and phrases.

For those people who would like to teach their children correct Spanish, here are the corrections. I used my knowledge as a native speaker, my father who has a PhD in linguistics and translated for 30 years, and the Spanish Royal Academy dictionary as resources.

Front Cover & Spine: In Spanish only the first word is capitalized in a title. Therefore, the correct title for the Spanish portion is "Mis jugetes". It is possible this is changing in practice because of the influence of English, but the guide on grammar and spelling still lists this as the rule.

Inside:
Jump rope is either "la comba" or "la cuica" depending on where you are from. I am familiar with and use the latter. The action to jump rope is "brincar cuica".It is true that just the word rope is "la cuerda", but you can't translate each word individually in order to get to "jump rope". "La comba" is also used to refer to the game of jumping rope, but since it also means the actual rope, it suffices to use that word alone. I have never seen jump rope translated anywhere else as "la cuerda de comba".

Tub toys should be "los juguetes para el ba?o" not "del ba?o".

Dress-up clothes is correctly translated as "la ropa para disfrazarse", literally "clothes to dress-up in" (dress-up as in a costume).

Paints: I have never heard the use of the plural "las pinturas" when referring to paints, as in liquids of many colors spread on a surface with a brush. "La pintura" is used in the both singular and plural meaning. "Las pinturas" really means "paintings", such as painted works of art on canvas, which is not what is pictured in the book.

Back Cover: "Colectar" in Spanish is used for the collection of money or debts. To collect, as in amass in a collection, is "coleccionar". The phrase, correcting the verb and the preposition, should be "?Coleccione todos los libros en la serie!"

You be the judge as to whether 6 corrections are too many.

Note on Crayons: Crayons can also be either "las crayolas" or "las ceras" again depending on where you are from. Until recently, no where could I find that "los crayones" was correct. But then I saw an episode of Plaza S?samo (Spanish Sesame Street) which is made in Mexico. One of the children used "los crayones" for crayons. It seems that this term is correctly used in Mexico. Language usage differs among Spanish-speaking countries. Usually the biggest differences are between Spain and the Americas, but there are also differences among the Latin American countries and the Caribbean. "Las ceras" is used in Spain and "las crayolas" is used in Puerto Rico and other Latin American countries.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to your Spanish library
This brightly colored book is great to use as an addition to a Spanish curriculum.

The sturdy pages continue to wow my classes of ages 3 all the way to 14 years old. If you'd like to introduce your child to Spanish, I might choose an animal, colors, or shapes book before this one, and you might want to get something they can WRITE on or color rather than just look at.

Overall, I think it's great to know ANY word (especially toys, which are everywhere!) when you're trying to introduce a second language to your child. It's a big endeavor, and this book helps!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Spanish for your child!
This series is a great way to introduce Spanish to your child. The board books are sturdy and colorful. Each is theme-based, with food, toys, clothes, numbers etc.Starting out with just words will give your youngster the impetus to move on to more words or even sentences next!
