Product Description
The MPEG standards are an evolving set of standards for video and audio compression. MPEG 7 technology covers the most recent developments in multimedia search and retreival, designed to standardise the description of multimedia content supporting a wide range of applications including DVD, CD and HDTV.
Multimedia content description, search and retrieval is a rapidly expanding research area due to the increasing amount of audiovisual (AV) data available. The wealth of practical applications available and currently under development (for example, large scale multimedia search engines and AV broadcast servers) has lead to the development of processing tools to create the description of AV material or to support the identification or retrieval of AV documents. Written by experts in the field, this book has been designed as a unique tutorial in the new MPEG 7 standard covering content creation, content distribution and content consumption. At present there are no books documenting the available technologies in such a comprehensive way.

  • Presents a comprehensive overview of the principles and concepts involved in the complete range of Audio Visual material indexing, metadata description, information retrieval and browsing
  • Details the major processing tools used for indexing and retrieval of images and video sequences
  • Individual chapters, written by experts who have contributed to the development of MPEG 7, provide clear explanations of the underlying tools and technologies contributing to the standard
  • Demostration software offering step-by-step guidance to the multi-media system components and eXperimentation model (XM) MPEG reference software
  • Coincides with the release of the ISO standard in late 2001.
A valuable reference resource for practising electronic and communications engineers designing and implementing MPEG 7 compliant systems, as well as for researchers and students working with multimedia database technology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive and practical treatment of the MPEG-7 standard
MPEG-1,2,and 4 make multimedia content available, while MPEG-7 makes content accessible, retrievable, and filterable. This book is all about the MPEG-7 standard, its implementation, and its applications. The book is divided into six sections which I describe as follows:
Section 1, the introduction, introduces the MPEG-7 standard, history, and its motivation.
Section 2, "Systems", covers system architecture, the description definition language (MPEG-7 is expressed in XML), and the binary format for MPEG-7.
Section 3, "Multimedia Description Schemes", describes the organization of multimedia features that can be described with MPEG-7. This section shows how search, retrieval, filtering, navigation, and browsing are supported by certain MPEG-7 tools. The next two sections are the most fascinating for people involved in multimedia description and retrieval.
Section 4, "Visual Descriptors", discusses how MPEG-7 can describe visual components of images and video for efficient retrieval. Color is described in multimedia via color histograms, dominant color, and color layout. There are also texture descriptors as well as shape descriptors and motion descriptors all present in MPEG-7 to "describe" visual information.
Section 5, "Audio Descriptors", likewise, describes how audio can be indexed via specific descriptors of its content that are far less obvious than those for vision. These include automatic speech recognition techniques, finding spectral similarities, and the use of hidden Markov models. The descriptors are both high and low level. Low level descriptors use the power and the spectrum of the audio signal for data matching and description. High-level tools include melody descriptions in the case of music, recognition of words spoken, log attack time, and even "query by humming".
Section 6, "Applications", shows applications for MPEG-7 that are broadly classified into search/browsing applications and mobile applications. The browsing applications mentioned include real time video retrieval, browsing TV news broadcasts, and audio music retrieval.
A DVD is included that contains technical reports, working demos, and the official MPEG-7 reference software. The DVD demos include using MPEG-7 for video browsing and also searching for images using texture as a descriptor.
The tone of the book is academic, but there are many examples in the book that really clarify the use and expression of the standard. I recommend it to anyone interested in MPEG-7. To get the most out of the book you should already be familiar with XML, information storage and retrieval techniques, and the field of computer vision. Due to the diverse background required to really understand the book, I wouldn't let the low Amazon sales rank scare you - it really is a five star book on the subject! Also, notice that used copies can be found on Amazon Marketplace for a fraction of what a new book costs.

Product Description

When it comes to communicating the gospel through new media and technologies, churches are often faced with one of two bad options. Either they can reject these new vehicles for sharing the faith as “not the way we’ve always done it”; or they can uncritically embrace them, failing to see that when not understood properly these media can obscure the gospel message just as much as they can communicate it. If they are going to reach the generations formed by electronic culture, churches must engage in a new evangelism, one that makes use of new technologies and cultural expressions. Sample explains how the electronic generations receive and process the information communicated by new media, and how the ways in which our consumerist culture makes use of those media are not good models for how the church can employ them to spread the message of Jesus Christ.

4-0 out of 5 stars teaches good teamwork skills
A high attraction of this book is the comprehensive support and data given in its accompanying website. Given the nature of the subject, the website lets the reader access a lot of material and exercises to practise on.

The text itself covers the various types of multimedia and the common tools for editing it. Like Photoshop for images, of course. You can regard the book as supplying good technical literacy. With especial emphasis on the team projects. These are a very practical way of understanding how real life commercial projects get done. The partitioning of tasks and the interactions with others are very instructive. ... Read more

Product Description
Completely revised and updated, Multimedia Environmental Models: The Fugacity Approach, Second Edition continues to provide simple techniques for calculating how chemicals behave in the environment, where they accumulate, how long they persist, and how this leads to human exposure. The book develops, describes, and illustrates the framework and procedures for calculating the behavior of chemicals in our multimedia environment of air, water, soil, and sediments, as well as the diversity of biota that reside in these media. While other books focus on specific compartments, such as the atmosphere, or specific substances, such as PCBs, this book presents the big picture of how organic chemicals behave in the total environment. It does this by providing examples of calculation methods based on the fugacity approach and explaining how to access up-to-date property databases and estimation methods as well as computer programs, which are available from the Internet. In addition, the models are Web based, instead of on a floppy disk as in the previous edition.Building on the work developed in the First Edition, the Second Edition includes: oA how-to modeling section, more worked examples and problems- most with solutions and answers oExpanded treatment of structure-activity relationships and modern estimation methodsoMore material illustrating applications to bioaccumulation is specific organisms and food websoEmphasis on current efforts to identify PBT chemicals and exposure analysis as a component of risk assessmentoExamples that provide each step of modeling calculations oWeb-based models, and references to property databases, estimation methods, and computer programs from the InternetWhen you need to make assessments of chemical behavior you need current, comprehensive. 3-0 out of 5 stars Avoid for Web Development
Had this book not included "multimedia" in the title, I would have rated it lower. I bought the book to broaden ideas for Web design and found little substance. The book is a bit "dated": reference tocommon browsers included "Netscape" and "Mosaic". Itwas also very slanted toward a print media background. Even though it wasabout multimedia? Yes. One section highlighted two primary focuses of aneffort: to inform; to teach. The Internet marries the print focus withautomated processes (applications). Interactivity is not about choosingwhat to be told or what to display, but about being heard and making adifference.

4-0 out of 5 stars MasterInternet Presentation
Writing for Multimedia by Timothy Garrand Focal Press To a certain extent, you bought this magazine because of its attractive cover picture, right? But you probably won't hesitate to trash it if its content lacked substance. Likewise, an attractive Web site is merely ornamental if it is aesthetically pleasing but its information is in shambles.Mastery of information presentation is a key factor as the Internet gives people access to more information. Although the Internet has been making vast improvements visually, the big glaring gap is still content. Many sites are just electronic novels with either boring or ill-presented plots. Multimedia demandsSight, sound and action - all of which we are familiar with, but the combination of which forms the environment that the multimedia writer must structure his or her writing to. Multimedia writing walks a fine line between entertainment and information. Garrand sees it as a continuum with information and entertainment at extremes, and a multimedia writer's most important task is deciding where to sit. Failing which, the work would end up as either an over-simplistic piece or, on the other extreme, a terribly boring article.Who should read this? I remember a comic play I watched entitled Sheer Madness in which the audience, by way of questions, determined the outcome of the 'who-dun-it' murder-mystery. You can bet that the playwright anticipated every question an audience member might ask and wrote a script for that outcome (a total of eight branch plots). Writing for Multimedia by Timothy Garrand explores the demands that multimedia writers are under to fuse information with entertainment. Whether you are a web page designer, a writer/designer, or an educator keen to incorporate multimedia into your lessons, you have to cultivate a new approach to writing for a very demanding medium. The multimedia writer needs to be a scriptwriter, a radio broadcaster, and a print journalist all in one. Using a very effective show-and-tell format that highlights examples of interactive medium at its best, Writing for Multimedia taps the brains of top scriptwriters, web page designers and advertising executives for insights into creating compelling text that inform and entertain the viewer. Complementing the text information is the CD-ROM included with the book that contains movie clips, script samples, and demos for software and multimedia programs. And, more than just a theoretical approach to multimedia writing, Writing for Multimedia delves into specific case studies of uncovering the 'secret sauce' or 'X-factor' of certain multimedia CD ROMs and web sites that have made them a success. Although Garrand has a tendency to get over-technical, he balances his information well with good examples from the CD-ROM and a simple writing style. Writing for Multimedia is a great how-to guide for anyone interested in spicing up their web site or adding life to a presentation. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Horrible book for beginner like me
If you are a beginner for any-edition Solidwork, please not buying this book until you are familiar through your graph class or youtube video. Beacause this book, following its steps to graph in Solidwork you will never be able to finish, alot setup they hide in the "Tips" of the end of each section. IF you are learning SW by yourself, please get away from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book coverage
As a CAD instructor for over five years at a large Community college; it's been a mission of mine for a few years to locate and procure a single affordable text for my students which provides a solid fundamental understanding in 2D and 3D visualization (Glass box) along with 2D and 3D Cartesian Coordinate system: Absolute, Relative, Polar, Cylindrical and Spherica, Alphabet of lines, Precedence of line types, ANSI dimensioning standards, Geometric relations, standard orthographic views, tolerance (in a form that most people can understand) etc. with straight forward step-by-step instructions in using SolidWorks.

My students have a solid understanding of engineering graphics and are creating parts, assemblies and ANSI standard drawings within weeks of the semester. This is truly an amazing book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book of its kind - SolidWorks
Having started in engineering as a draftsman more than 32 years ago and now as a CAD instructor, I have seen them all and in my humble opinion this is the best book of its kind ever written. The book is great for those whom are trying to learn both basic drafting skills and SolidWorks in a single book.

The authors bypassed most of the fluff, how to sharpen your pencil, and goes directly to the heart of the matter. They have packed more pertinent, practical how-to drafting information along with how to use and apply SolidWorks in this book than you will find in any other two books of its size.

The authors give clear, easy to understand instructions. The book is easy to read, and to find specifically what you need. The step by step instructions for SolidWorks provides a strong learning base for this fascistic 3D CAD software program. This book is a rarity in the world of CAD.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is as it is.
The product came in a timely fashion (although... kind of slow with shipping part) and the condition is exactly as described.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction
I can't say that I'm sure why people would specifically recommend this book for "Photoshop" or even sculpture...perhaps they have a different (newer or older) version of this book.I got the one in this specific listing, version 6 (there's at least one newer version out there).I wanted to mention this because if a person were to get this book thinking (based on other reviews) that this book is going to help them with Photoshop, beyond basic principles of design, composition, color and such, there's not really anything in this book pertaining all that specifically to photography, let alone digital photography.I'm not saying that this book wouldn't perhaps be helpful to a photographer, it's just that there are better books out there in that specific regard (such as a John Hedgecoe book perhaps).Design Basics is really aimed at a person looking to become an "artist" in the most general sense of the term, who's just beginning their education.

That said, this is a pretty good book if for no other reason than it's an "easy read".It doesn't really go in to a great deal of detail on any one specific issue but it does provide the reader with a good over all explanation of most art related terms and concepts. It's also laid out very well in that it explains something and provides some pretty good visual examples (most of the time) to illustrate and help the reader understand the explanation.

Now one thing I feel I must say is that this book -is- aimed at "students"...it's intended as a art TEXT BOOK and as such, the price is outrageously high for new. -If- you're like me and are a college student and this book is required for one of your art classes (I needed it for 2D Design), then by all means grab it (make sure to grab the version your class requires though). If the book is listed as being optional for your course, contact the instructor and ask if it's really necessary. If you have all kinds of money dripping out of various holes in your body and really have no better way of spending it (like donating to a nice charity), then yea...sure...grab it.If on the other hand you're a struggling artist on a tight budget like many of us are, I can -NOT- recommend getting this book new!Virtually all of the information contained in this book can easily be found in other art books for a MUCH better price!Having been a freelance graphic artist for the past 14 years before getting the formal education, I already knew virtually everything that was in this book (from other used books and vids that collectively still cost less than this book does new).I got my copy here used for about $10 (plus s&h) so that was worth it but I can't honestly say I'd spend as much as $40-$70 for this book used and I certainly would ***NOT*** pay $120 for it new! My three star rating is based on the price alone. It's a decent book for the beginning art student but it's simply not -that- good to warrant the price...not by a long shot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to managing new media projects
These are an excellent and comprehensive set of books that any professional or lecturer involved in new media project management should have as their guide to successful projects. The transfer from one book (edition 2) to the two books has meant that a lot more in-depth information has been dealt with.

Book 1 'People & Processes' takes you through the various stages in a project: client requirements, understanding clients, contracts, team selection, copyright issues, multimedia elements, interface design, testing, localization and a very good new section on 'managing small, quick projects'.

Book 2 'Technical Issues' is not just lessons in file formats and authoring, but helps project managers to understand what is involved in producing and delivering the different media elements and current key technical terms.

Most Multimedia books I have used tend to talk about project lifecycles and processes in the strictest sense but miss out the actual reality - that these are not cut and dried processes. These books explain that the new media industry is still defining a standard for project processes. This will help professionals to understand that the industry consists of people with a myriad of skills, what these involve and their working methods. By doing so it gives advice on how to manage teams with these diverse backgrounds.

As a lecturer in Multimedia I use various sources for research information and have found that these books don't just give the theoretical facts of how things should be done, but how they should realistically be done. Having also used the 2nd edition, I have found these books to be an invaluable source that I will continue to buy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I found this CD-ROM excellent in helping me understand this difficult subject
Fluid mechanics is a notoriously difficult subject and unless you are blessed with a highly gifted teacher, then it is likely that you will have trouble visualising some of the concepts.Equations on the page are sometimes just not enough to convey the dynamics of what is going on with some concepts.

This CD-ROM does a superb job of making plain some of the core theorems and equations. For example the section on the stream function is alone worth the price of this CD-ROM, since it explains beautifully why the equation is defined in the way that it is, and shows a video of a flow which illustrates the concept.

Some of the comments in the other reviews have some validity - the content could have been 10 times greater, because Fluids is a *massive* subject, but then the price would have been 10 times greater (and I would pay for it! Now there's a gauntlet!)I don't find any of the animations dull - after all, this isn't entertainment, this is education of basic principles.Perhaps these people find algebra dull too?

Also I had no problems playing the animations. They were a little slow whilst loading but once loaded they were fine.

Also when people award one star, what are they comparing it against? It's not really fair to compare with source on the Internet, as some people don't have masses of time to search or the proper bandwidth for it - some people just need all of the information in one place. Now, to my knowledge, this CD-ROM is unique - there is nothing like it.Please correct me if I'm wrong!

I would give this five stars, if there were some lectures on this CD-ROM, whichI would have thought been trivial to include. There's nothing quite like a human talking in front of a blackboard to convey some kind of passion for a subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars i was disappointed
after attending some lectures in which movies and simple demonstrations of fluid motions were used creatively, i thought by owning this CDROM i would have in my collections some interesting pictures and movies of fluid dynamics. instead i found that the materials were unbelievably trivial and boring. don't believe me? buy it or loan it from a library and see for yourself.

you can find much much better fluid galleries on the web. unfortunately amazon doesn't let me insert links. try google 'physics of fluids andrews aopp' and 'GFD lab rhines university of washington' and find the links from there.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dull, text heavy, lightweight, and a real memory hog - not recommended
I purchased this CD-ROM to support my studies in an undergraduate upper division fluid dynamics class. What a disappointment and exercise in frustration.

The multimedia aspects are thin and overwhelmed by text.Picture a 2-D coordinate system with an animated particle moving along a simple curve....this animation repeats over and over.In the 60 mins. I spent going thru the CD-ROM I encountered no sound, no speech. The interface consists of tabbed or sequencial windows loaded with textbook type and simple illustrations or 6 second clips of fluid flow.

The disc covers only basic concepts.Granted, I didn't finish the CD-ROM but where's the Reynold's Transport Theorem, etc.?They present the Navier-Stokes equation but say much less than I've read in my textbook.

This multimedia disc is about 10% of what it could be.

On top of this, the disc is a real memoy hog and does not run smoothly. The readme file owns up to this and advises users to quit all other programs while running it.I use a Powerbook with a G4 processor and2 Gb of RAM, but the program still ran slow and jerky and the movie clips stuttered. The stated Mac requirements for this CD-ROM are a G3 and 64 MB of RAM.Huh?Good luck!

Don't believe the stellar reviews on the back cover. This disc is dull. ... Read more
