Product Description

Pro Oracle Database 11g RAC on Linux provides full-life-cycle guidance on implementing Oracle Real Application Clusters in a Linux environment. Real Application Clusters, commonly abbreviated as RAC, is Oracle’s industry-leading architecture for scalable and fault-tolerant databases. RAC allows you to scale up and down by simply adding and subtracting inexpensive Linux servers. Redundancy provided by those multiple, inexpensive servers is the basis for the failover and other fault-tolerance features that RAC provides.

Written by authors well-known for their talent with RAC, Pro Oracle Database 11g RAC on Linux gives you a rock-solid and technically flawless foundation on which to build your RAC-management skills. Authors Julian Dyke and Steve Shaw share their hard-won experience in building RAC clusters, showing you how to build for success using the very latest Oracle technologies, such as Automatic Storage Management (ASM) and Oracle Clusterware. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best SQL text ever
I was dubious about another thick, high cost textbook. I have enough incomprehensible database and SQL books - this text is different - it's so well written, it's understandable, the examples are useful, and the author points out all the little idiosyncrasies that trip up newbies. Highly recommend this book for anyone starting to learn SQL or who had trouble with SQL with another text. The datafiles on the companion website are easy to work with and it's a very practical, hands on text. Well worth the high cost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good & Easy Oracle
This book is very easy to understand. It goes step by step on how to create a database. It has print screens about the topic that shows how to do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best SQL book I've read yet!
I typically do not have much enthusiasm for technical books published by the big "textbook publishers." Too many errors, too much "intro/overview," and bad information/advice. However, this book is a gem!

I will apologize straightaway for not writing a detailed review. I am too busy to do one. However, I think it's better that I review it now, than forget to review it at all.

Already I own several MySQL books (and some PHP/MySQL books), including Wrox and O'Reily books. Lately, however, I've only used them as a basic "reference" when building websites. Back when I tried to go through each book chapter-by-chapter, I was disappointed when I tried anything complicated for a "newbie," such as joins and virtual tables. Nothing ever worked the way the books said they would! But truly, the concepts behind joins were not explained clearly *at all* and so I was not capable of troubleshooting the problems myself.

"Oracle 11g: SQL" shines in this regard! The explanations of what happens "behind-the-scenes" when you create a join or query a virtual table are so exceptionally accurate and well-explained, that not only could I create complex joins, I was even able to find and correct errors in the online tests that were part of our "web-enhanced" college course!

Aside from the lucidity of the text, the chapter was filled with practical "cases" that at least begin to hint at some of the complex ERDs one would have to create in real life. Once in a while, the instructions for the case in one chapter did not exactly match up with what had been done to the case database in another chapter, but such errors were rather obvious and did not cause problems.

If you buy this text used, make sure you buy the online access, especially if you do not want to install Oracle on your computer. Access includes a sandbox where you can view sample databases (if your teacher has set them up), or run SQL scripts to install them (downloaded from the website or copied from the CD). This allows you to practice simple beginner-level queries or to create entire databases as you please. If you follow along with examples and cases, you will occasionally need to run scripts to alter the sample databases, anyway.

This book is *superb* both in its chapter content, exercises, examples, and cases.

    A few gripes:

    1) The tests (or rather the test system) often re-numbers answers so that whenever you have a choice of "both a & b" the correct answers are actually a & c or some other combination. Whenever 2 answers are correct, just always pick the one that says "a & b" and you'll be fine!

    2) One of the questions about joins, which I got during the "review" (which didn't count, thank goodness), was wrong in both the wording of the question and the answer.

    3) When you play *online* with "bind variables" (used to store user input from an HTML form, and submit it to the database), you must change your syntax for "Oracle Express"! The book says to precede the variable name with an ampersand ("&"); however, you must use a colon (":")!

Even though I use MySQL and this textbook covered Oracle's flavor of SQL, it is the most *enlightening* relational-database textbook I have EVER, EVER read!!! ... Read more

    Product Description
This book is about database security and auditing. You will learn many methods and techniques that will be helpful in securing, monitoring and auditing database environments. It covers diverse topics that include all aspects of database security and auditing - including network security for databases, authentication and authorization issues, links and replication, database Trojans, etc. You will also learn of vulnerabilities and attacks that exist within various database environments or that have been used to attack databases (and that have since been fixed). These will often be explained to an "internals" level. There are many sections which outline the "anatomy of an attack" - before delving into the details of how to combat such an attack. Equally important, you will learn about the database auditing landscape - both from a business and regulatory requirements perspective as well as from a technical implementation perspective.

    * Useful to the database administrator and/or security administrator - regardless of the precise database vendor (or vendors) that you are using within your organization.
    * Has a large number of examples - examples that pertain to Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Sybase and even MySQL..
    * Many of the techniques you will see in this book will never be described in a manual or a book that is devoted to a certain database product.
    * Addressing complex issues must take into account more than just the database and focusing on capabilities that are provided only by the database vendor is not always enough. This book offers a broader view of the database environment - which is not dependent on the database platform - a view that is important to ensure good database security. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Resource Available on Database and Data Access Auditing
If compliance and auditing are on your agenda, then Ron Ben Natan's book on database security and auditing merits your attention. In this day-and-age of computer viruses, hacking, and governmental regulations, database security and auditing is a subject of paramount importance. And Implementing Database Security and Auditing attacks the subject with a vengenance.

In just over 400 pages the author manages to quite thoroughly cover a wide variety of database security topics. Whether you want to learn more about encryption, authentication and password control, or access control, this book provides help.

The book is useful for both DBAs and security administrators, giving each a better view of the world where the disciplines of database management and security management meet. Even better, the book offers many examples and guidelines for multiple environments. Whether you use DB2 on AIX, MySQL on Linux, Oracle on Unix, or SQL Server on Windows, Ben Natan's book provides useful guidance.

Are you curious to know more about SQL injection attacks? Learn what they are and why they are dangerous in this book. What about buffer overflows? Maybe you've read about them in the IT press, but those "newsy" pieces rarely delve into the depth required to understand and prevent attacks using these methods. This book offers that depth.

Chapter 7, "Using the Database to do Too Much," is particularly useful. In this chapter the author discusses some of the things not to do if you want to properly secure your database environment. You can save yourself a lot of trouble by reading and following these useful suggestions.

I think my favorite section of the book is the final three chapters. Here is where the author tackles the meaty topics of regulatory compliance and database auditing. New governmental rules and regulations are being introduced constantly and their impact on database administration is not clearly understood by many heads-down, techies. This book will give you a clearer understanding of laws such as GLB, Sarbanes-Oxley, and HIPAA -- and lend guidance on how to adapt your database environment in order to comply with these laws.

All-in-all Implementing Database Security and Auditing is a useful and timely publication that most DBAs would do well to read and embrace.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Well-Rounded Textbook for DBAs, Auditors and InfoSec
I'm rarely moved to write a review on a technical book, perhaps because I read so many of them. However, this text is truly outstanding, due to it's breadth of coverage, i.e., Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, UBD and Sybase AND well written descriptions of problems and solutions.

If you are seeking to secure your databases AND/OR audit them, this book contains both suggestions for scripting, triggers etc as well as where to look for vulnerabilities.

Bravo to the author, and THANKS, I'm using regularly, the best compliment of all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and timely book
The book is very practical and timely; it contains the complex of useful rules either dispersed in many different sources or not published at all.For example my colleague who is a DB Oracle administrator in Sony Computer Entertainment distinguished the following recommendations:
    · Hardening Oracle environment
    · Avoiding the use of mod_plsql
    · Not making a database a web server and not store HTML pages in the database

From my perspective the rules concerning Web services and cross-site scripting are the most valuable.Working on these applications I see how vulnerable is a database server due to some security holes; therefore avoiding the holes is important.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very good book
This is a very good book. It is very readable and very informative. It has a lot of useful stuff. I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Expiration Date for Useful, Accurate Information
I bought this book a couple weeks ago, after reading a couple reviews from different sources stating that while this book is a bit old, much of the information contained within is still useful. But, why spend the money buying a book that is eight years old, when the last database maintained in-house was moved to Oracle 10g R2 three years ago, and Oracle 11g R2 is likely set to be released in just a couple months? As fast as computer technology, and computer software for that matter, changes, is there much value in eight year old information?I was very pleased with the author's "Cost-Based Oracle Fundamentals" book, so I thought that it was wise to buy a copy of this book before it disappears from the retail market. Was it a waste of money? After all, there is no coverage of ASSM tablespaces, MEMORY_TARGET parameter, SGA_TARGET parameter, PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET parameter, AWR, Enterprise Manager Database Control, or any other feature introduced after Oracle 8.1.6.

If one ignores what likely amounted to ten pages of bug descriptions related to problems which must be avoided in Oracle 8.1.5 and 8.1.6, 95% of the book information is still relevant to people administering Oracle 9i through Oracle 11g.If one ignores this quote from page 28, "Of course the buyers may decide that they can get a really good deal by buying 4 35GB disks instead of the 16 9GB disks you requested... and maybe 4 600-MHz CPUs would be cheaper than the 12 220-MHz CPUs you wanted," the relevance and accuracy of the advice dispensed in the book does not diminish with time, and that cannot be said for many Oracle related books of the same vintage. It might even be an interesting mental exercise to read the book with a critical eye, attempting to identify limitations outlined within the text which no longer apply to more recent releases of Oracle - one would hope that the bug related limitations have long since been exterminated.

Despite having read a couple books by Thomas Kyte a couple years ago, as well as several others written by various respected authors, I still managed to record eight pages of typewritten notes while reading the Practical Oracle 8i book.Topics of the notes seemed to fall into the categories of "I remember that, kind of", "*There* is the missing link that connects the facts of the seemingly unrelated events", "Wow, I never thought of that as a possibility", and "That fact, or a question related to that fact, was just mentioned on one of the Oracle forums, or on a technical Oracle blog".

Paraphrased sections of the book, the case against rebuilding indexes on a scheduled basis, circa 2001 (and probably just as accurate today): "When an index block becomes completely empty, it is placed in the index's freelist, but is not removed from the structure until the block is reused. The index block, when reused, may be used in a different part of the index structure."Formulas are floating about on the Internet purporting to indicate when an index should be rebuilt based on criteria which is only updated after analyzing an index."Analyzing an index will take out a mode 4 (shared) lock on a table, in the process preventing inserts, updates, and deletes within the index. An online rebuild of an index requires two periods in which the parent table is locked - once at the start of the rebuild and once at the end of the rebuild.Waits caused by the locks will not show in V$LOCK, and V$SESSION_WAIT will show waits on a NULL event. It is not possible to perform an online rebuild of bitmap indexes, reversed indexes, LOB indexes, secondary indexes on index organized tables, or on function based indexes.During an online index rebuild, space will be needed for the original index, the rebuilt index, and a logging segment named SYS.JOURNAL_nnnnn.Unlike the rebuild command, coalesce does not demand extra space to maintain two copies of the index, nor does it need to lock the table, but using coalesce does increase the chances of other sessions hitting a snapshot too old error."

Paraphrased from the book, the case against and for using the SYS user for an export (CONISTENT=Y cannot be used when the SYS user is performing an export, per the "Oracle Database Utilities 10g Release 2, Original Export and Import" documentation): "Oracle 8i introduces row level security, which uses a PL/SQL function to apply an additional WHERE clause predicate to a table - row level security does not apply to the SYS user.It is important to use CONSISTENT=Y when exporting partitioned tables. When CONSISTENT=N is specified, the export of each partition in a table is treated as a separate transaction, and may be exported at a different SCN number (incremented when any session commits). When tables are exported which contain nested tables, the two physical segments are exported in separate transactions, potentially resulting in inconsistent data during the import if the export was performed with the default CONSISTENT=N."So, what to do if the database is using partitioning, row level security, and nested tables? (Read the book to find the answer).

The book is written in a style which seems to mimic the type of conversation one might expect if an Oracle guru casually pulls up a chair in the library and starts telling the story of the little Oracle database engine that grew up to become the big database engine with occasional sharp teeth. The author's casual language in the text is not what one would expect from a technical computer book, but the writing style does flow well. When I reached the last page of the final appendix, I thought to myself "is that all there is to the book, what happened next?"Reviewing my notes, I think that I am able to answer that question.

Struggling to Find a Couple Negatives:
    * A couple scripts are missing obvious characters, such as a closing parenthesis.
    * Features requiring an Enterprise Edition license were not identified as such until Appendix A (an important section of the book which briefly describes various features mentioned in the book, along with associated benefits and negatives).
    * Appendix A failed to mention that analytic functions and function based indexes were not available to users on the Standard Edition of Oracle 8.1.x

In summary, even though this book is eight years old, it is not a waste of money.Much of the content is still relevant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece
This is not your average book of tips without proof. Highly technical stuff with lots of incredible insights.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent advance DBA/developer book for Oracle 8i
I work with many legacy 8i databases on Oracle and this book is excellent reference for more advanced topics. The author has an excellent way of teaching concepts and examples as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars New ideas for design
Before reading this book, I was getting tired of books that just repeated the manual, adding little information.

This resourceful book is for experienced DBAs / developers that want new ideas about Oracle database design.

5-0 out of 5 stars read from cover-to-cover immediately after certification
Once you pass your certification, get this book and read it from cover to cover, or at least the bulk of the chapters. It will go fast and enjoyable, and it will give an extra perspective over what you just learned.

    3-0 out of 5 stars 70% satisfied
The book contains interesting Oracle security topics, but it is old and not all the topics are still valid, I would suggest to buy the book just if you don't have much idea of Oracle DB security.

4-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for Breaking into Oracle Databases
I've been doing some Oracle research and of course this is the only book on the market that really covers breaking into Oracle with the exception of The Database Hacker's Handbook which came out in 2005.Justin Clark's (and others) SQL Injection Book published in 2009 also covers some Oracle material but not enough to make this book obsolete.

I bought this book immediately when it came out in 2007 (yeah I'm super late on the review) but frankly put it down because it was confusing and definitely not suited for anyone that didn't already have a basic exposure to Oracle.I picked it up again in late 2008 after doing the background research on Oracle security and administration. Armed with a better understanding of Oracle in general I attacked the book again, focusing on SQL Injection in the Oracle PL/SQL packages with the goal of going from locating an open TNS listener to getting a shell on the system.

The author is well known in the security industry and one of only a handful of Oracle Security "experts", so the skill level was definitely there.

    Breakdown of the Chapters:
    Introduction.
Chapter 1 Overview of the Oracle RDBMS.
Chapter 2 The Oracle Network Architecture.
Chapter 3 Attacking the TNS Listener and Dispatchers.
Chapter 4 Attacking the Authentication Process.
    Chapter 5 Oracle and PL/SQL.
    Chapter 6 Triggers.
    Chapter 7 Indirect Privilege Escalation.
Chapter 8 Defeating Virtual Private Databases.
Chapter 9 Attacking Oracle PL/SQL Web Applications.
Chapter 10 Running Operating System Commands.
Chapter 11 Accessing the File System.
    Chapter 12 Accessing the Network.
Appendix A Default Usernames and Passwords.

I think most of the background chapters are "adequate" and the exploitation chapters are very good. At the time of publishing the author released code for vulnerabilities that were brand new.I do have issues with Chapter 5 Oracle and PL/SQL.I think the coverage of PL/SQL is only adequate if you already know PL/SQL. It took me going and reading a lot of other material on the net about PL/SQL to understand things that are glossed over in the chapter. The chapter is good and covers tons of material but from an attackingOracle perspective more time should have been spent on teaching the reading how to use the "describe" package option in PL/SQL to describe the package to learn how to craft your queries correctly as well as how to research and write your own SQL Injection queries based on published vulnerabilities. More coverage on default privileges and roles would have been useful as well.Again, if you have been an Oracle DBA, you understand this already. If you are an Oracle security researchers you know this already. If you are a pentester trying to get some Oracle under your belt you'll have to go pick up another book or hit the internet to get the background material.

The other chapters are good and they cover their stated topics.More examples would have been nice of course.A couple of times we are told to check out the Oracle coverage in The Database Hacker's Handbook. That's just frustrating. While I'm not a huge fan of republishing materials, if information is needed to understand or better understand a topic then include it, its not like OHH was "running long" its very slim for a security book.

What knocked the book down to 4 stars was when I went and read the Oracle sections of The Database Hacker's Handbook and it had material that wasn't included in OHH.Given the "slimness" of the book, it wouldn't have hurt the book to reproduce the content from DHH as it is relevant and helps explain the concepts better than the coverage in OHH.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I found this book to be an excellent resource, and use it quite often at work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Reading
After reading it I thought "...well what were you expecting?, the keys to the house of Larry Ellison also?". It has interesting information for a non hacker like me, but much of the security problems are in the Oracle source code, and therefore there is not much I can do about it. Yes, now I know what not to do in the new code I program. You have to be a programmer to make sense of the code listings and have seen like dumps of snifers before. The language used by the author is clear for me.

    Hope this helps

More Oracle databases are deployed on UNIX systems than any other platform, yet most books on Oracle database administration largely ignore the UNIX platform. This book focuses exclusively on Oracle database administration in UNIX environments. This concise introduction to Oracle database administration on UNIX systems requires no prior database experience. It covers installation, migration, upgrades, networking, security, backup and recovery, performance tuning, capacity planning, Oracle GUI development tools, and SQL programming. This book is for all Oracle database administrators, especially those working in UNIX environments. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Very introductory and lacks consistency
This book tries to be ambitious and all it accomplishes is to convey scattered, imprecise and shallow information to the beginner. There may be a few handy topics, but it is all there is. It lacks consistency. TheCD-ROM contents are ridiculous. If the reader is interested in learningOracle and UNIX, I would suggest buying specific books on both products, oreven attending some courses.

1-0 out of 5 stars Reader from Phialdelphia is wrong
If you are running in archive mode, with a cold backup, you can recover up to the point of failure. It gets its information from the redo log files and archive redo log files. You only need to use a hot backup if thedatabase needs to be running 24hrs. The book gives the impression thatarchived log files are purely in relation to hot backups. Rolling forwardfrom cold backups is the commonest production scenario. I would recommendthe book Oracle 8Backup and Recovery Handbook by Rama Velpuri. for anaccurate description of backup and recovery.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book is not worth paper it's printed on!!
This book is completely worthless! The author is a typical educator, NO practical experience, he gives very little practical advice, if any. You would be better off with Oracle's documentation CD. Also, what's up with300+ pages? the trash only has 180+!

1-0 out of 5 stars Pitiful
I am a working UNIX admin and alreadyfamiliar with other databases. I read this book and the CDROM prior to installing Oracle 8 for Solaris.

During the installation process `orainst` asked for information notcovered by this text.

In my opinion this book is lacking on the basicinformation needed to install Oracle from scratch on a running UNIXworkstation.

In fact I found more relavent (and free) information fromOracle's Web site.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste you money
Since I am only a novice to the Oracle Database administration, I don't suggest anyone to take this book. It just summarizes the concept of Oracledatabase very roughly, let alone the UNIX. To my regret, it seems there isno much choice to find another book dealing with UNIX AND Oracle at thesame time.Hope there will be such a great book that can really help. ... Read more

    Product Description

This special signature edition includes a CD that contains a searchable PDF version of the book and a sample chapter from the forthcoming 10g edition which will be released in fall 2005.

This remains the defining book on the older 8i Oracle database if you are a developer or DBA who works with Oracle-driven database applications. You will encounter wisdom on designing, developing, and administering these applications from one of the world's foremost Oracle experts, Thomas Kyte.

The book covers every important feature and function of the 8i version of Oracle, and it is unique in the technical depth and insight that it provides on each topic. This book will show you how to expertly program with the database and exploit its feature set effectively. The result: you will build fast, effective, scalable, and secure Oracle applications.

    Amazon.com Review
Tom Kyte is of a rare breed. To begin, he's technically expert in his subject (administration of and development of applications for Oracle database management systems). What's more (and what distinguishes him from the ranks of the super-competent), he is both able and willing to share his considerable store of wisdom with Oracle users via books like Expert One on One: Oracle. Perhaps the best book about Oracle products ever put out, this book is a model of all aspects of technical publishing: scope, level of detail, clarity of explanations, and quality of examples. It's pretty much certain that you will learn a great deal about Oracle from Kyte's work, and that you'll become more capable in your work as a result of studying this book.

Kyte--it's very tempting to call him an Oracle oracle--seems not to have had to struggle to fit his message into the Wrox Press form, which relies on a running commentary interspersed with code listings and conceptual diagrams. Kyte's commentary is eminently informed and packed with references to the differences between that which is ideal and that which often must be done to accommodate reality. He takes care to explain how little-known pieces of the Oracle environment--and alternative ways of looking at the more familiar ones--solve problems, an approach that leads to elegant, efficient solutions. Kyte boosts his readers across the chasm that separates people who can write applications for Oracle databases from people who understand Oracle databases. --David Wall

Topics covered: Deep wisdom on developing applications for Oracle database management systems, as well as plenty of advice on designing and administering them. There are sections on general design and implementation practices, application architecture, locking and concurrency, transactions and rollbacks, importing and exporting, and lots more of interest to developers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best $12 I ever spent!!!
I bought this book on cheap clearance after the original publisher went out of business -- the best $12 I ever invested.Remembering even 10% of this book makes you better than 90% of Oracle developers, modelers and architects.Mr. Kyte's real world experience and reliance on solid examples instead of folklore makes this light-years ahead of any other Oracle book; it's the only Oracle book I re-read regularly. If you can afford only one Oracle book, this is it.And you may not need any other.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantasic
A true masterpiece, and a great way to learn Oracle concepts. No more to say.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed and well explained
Thick Oracle book which is intended for developers who might need to understand the Oracle internals and administration parts besides writing SQL. It's useful for them working in other database also as the general database concept is simlar. Developers can now have more DBA knowledges after reading before on-going performing some DBA task.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Oracle DBAs supporting 10g
I have been an Oracle DBA for 15 years. So I know, no shop 'goes to the latest' release right away. And when they do move to it, they do it slowly.

Question - all of your production DBs on 11g (here in 1Q 2009)? Not likely, so I bet you have a lot of 10g in production. I bet its almost all still 10g. So, what book can help you with some features? This one.

Its a great book. I especially like the 'tone'. Its technical and not flowery. I like books that get to the point. I want to know how a feature works in real life - not a re-hash of the doc (read any of those types of books lately?).

It has 10gR2 stuff in it. I recommend you go to 10.2.0.4 ASAP.

The book has a nice flow, and fewer typos than most others. I hope other authors use this format/outline/flow/content as a model for new 11g books.

So, if you are supporting 10g, get this book. It is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best "How to" book on Oracle
This is the best "How to" book on Oracle. I have read around 20 books on Oracle (I reviewed most of them on Amazon) and this one is the most practical Oracle book for intermediate to advance Oracle DBAs.

The book skips most of the architecture and goes directly on how to configure and use some of the most salient features of Oracle 10g.

    Some of the examples are:

1)How to manually install RAC instance
2)How to migrate Non-ASM to ASM disks and vice versa.
3)How to collect AWR reports using builtin scripts.
    4)How to install CRS
5)How to Flashback Database and Flashback Table.
    6)How to Patch Dataguard Instances
7)How to use flashback in Dataguard Standby.
8)How to manually remove Oracle Instances.
    9)How to upgrade RMAN Catalog.
10)How to use Wait statistics to measure and improve performance.

Not all the topics are advanced. But it still helps to get down to the fundamentals, even for the advanced DBA with decade or more of experience.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to expand/improve their Oracle 10G skillset.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to have
This is a really good book to have by an Oracle DBA for Oracle 10g reference. This book will help the Oracle DBA to identify and implement Oracle 10g new features. It has good tips for performance and tuning and setting up ASM. I give this book 5 star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Presents Material in a great way
This book covers Release 2 of Oracle 10G. Concepts are presented in a clear manner. Each chapter can read in an hour or so. This is a great place to start for new DBAs. For experience DBAs, this a great book to get to know the New Features. Book is very easily read. Best book to learn Oracle 10g R2.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful learning tool
This book is remarkablefor the clear manner in which it explains the basics of relational databases in general and Oracle in particular. I am currently in training for Oracle Certified Professional and had been using study guides and class material to learn Oracle. These are fine for passing the OCP exam, but they leave many gaps in the finer points which lead to thoroughly understanding Oracle.

Since this book's goal is to explain Oracle's SQL Plus and PL/SQL languages instead of getting you through an examination with a passing grade it goes into details that my training missed. I especially like the way that database concepts, design and modeling are covered in the first chapter, and the step-by-step approach to teaching SQL and PL/SQL by actually performing useful tasks such as creating tables and working with tables.

In addition to the basics, this book covers advanced topics such as row locking, performance and joins and set operations.PL/SQL is given the same thorough treatment as SQL Plus and as you read through the book and actually perform the tasks on a real Oracle instance your understanding and skill level increases greatly.Since PL/SQL is rich in features and programming constructs the care with which the author explains the basics and how to apply them in a real environment made learning fun and builds your self confidence.

I also liked the attention given to database administration tasks in the final part of the book, and found the SQL Plus and PL/SQL quick reference in the back of the book useful on many occasions.

If you don't have the luxury of attending Oracle training this book is an excellent substitute, and even if you're going through OCP training this book will fill in the gaps that will surely arise since the course is fast paced.Note that this book uses Oracle 8i as the example environment, but the material works with the newer 9i version too. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Oracle DBA Architect
This book lacks a great deal of detail information given the cost of the book. This does not talk about how to create an Oracle Active Standby Database manually. It sticks to using other tools like RMAN.Not every environment uses Oracle RMAN. This book is way over priced!I should gone to the book store to review the whole book before puchasing it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very condescending
Half the book is an advertisement for Oracle.Sounds like I'm being lectured by Oracle sales consultants the whole time.I felt used afterwards, like I needed to take a shower.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oracle Data Guard 11G Handbook
We recently implemented Data Guard in our production environment and the advice and best practices provided in the book allowed us to make the transition without a hitch. One of the best Oracle books I have ever purchased. We will be switching over to a new data center next week and the knowledge I gained from reading this book makes me confident that transition will be successful as well. On a side note, I had a problem with downloading some of the scripts (due to broken links at the books website) and within an hour one of the authors had contacted me to let me know the issue had been resolved. Impressive book and even more impressive customer service from the authors.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the 10g book
The 10g version of this book was much more clear, crisp, and had great step by step directions, it was awesome. This one just breezes right over the 'how to' with very poor examples. If this is your first jump into Data Guard, then get this book, if not metalink or internet searches are better sources for in depth information on the new 11g features.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Data Guard book ever!!!
This is hands down the best Data Guard book I have ever read. Every other book I have had and read just does not compare to this. This book lays everything out to you in such a clear fashion that it is almost impossible not to have a successful DG environment. Using this book, I was able to for the first time get my DG environment setup and running in a very short time. Using this book, it was also the first time I was able to get both a Switchover and Failover to work as expected and to take the mystery out of what happens when you do one.
The book lays it all out for you, but more importantly it gives you the reasons for why you are making the settings and changes that you are.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to get their hands wet and becoming familiar with Data Guard. If you still have any doubts or questions you can see my Data Guard project on the Oracle Wiki by doing a search on 11gR2 Data Guard project using google. In there I go from start to finish everything I did to build my DG environment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy editing
Got the book a few days ago.I've been going through the examples. You can download all the source code from the Oracle Press web site, which is nice. But the examples in the book aren't given names or numbers, and the web site (although it does at least separate them by chapter) uses a cryptic and unexplained naming convention, so finding the code you want is confusing.

And it gets worse. The very first example in the book (and the downloaded code) won't compile; it calls a method that doesn't exist. I was able to work-around it.The second example wouldn't compile either; it has a typo. The fixes are easy enough so far, but it's frustrating.I guess they didn't have enough time to actually edit the book.Hopefully the online code will eventually be fixed.Disappointing so far. :(

2-0 out of 5 stars Typos
I guess I am rushing to judgement - but in the first 10 pages I read, there were about 8 typos - so I am giving this a 2 stars for now. Will update my review/rating as I go along.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does not start the job well
This book does not do a good job of getting the small experiments running. And w/o that, it is difficult to get any handle over the big picture. If you haven't done XML and Oracle integration before, this book definitely is not what you are looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-have book for XML developers

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is outdated
i bought this book to learn SQL two year ago. The SQL table that comes with the book was meant for Oracle 8 and when i started learning SQL the version was 9 , so this book did not serve any purpose to me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, But Commits One Cardinal Sin
Yes, this book is outdated. But, given its stated mission, that's really not a problem. From page xv in the Preface, under the Audience and Coverage section:

"Overall, although this book does not discuss advanced features such as performance tuning issues or advanced PL/SQL, it is ideal for a beginning Oracle user to get an overview of what SQL and Oracle entails. The book gives a very good "feel" for what Oracle is and the many ways Oracle can be used.It certainly can be considered a starting point for what Oracle has to offer."

I was very impressed with how the authors wrote to this goal. The book starts from the premise that the reader has barely heard the word "database" and works up from there. It was really designed to be used in conjunction with an actual database theory course. So, the assumed level of knowledge seems to creep up a bit as the book progresses. But, even so, anyone even vaguely familiar with database theory should have no problem reading this book. It's very well done.

But, you wonder, why do I only give it an OK rating of 3 stars out of 5?Because the authors do one unforgivable thing:they teach new material in the Exercises.Exercises are supposed to measure how well people have learned the material taught in the book. They're not for teaching new material. If it hadn't been for that, I'd have given the book a Very Good 4 stars out of 5 rating.Still, if you don't really need the theory behind a database and just need to get by with a bit of SQL under Oracle, I do recommend this book.

    2-0 out of 5 stars Not up-to-date!
I bought this book to refresh my knowledge of SQL, especially the new stuff that has been added in the past few years, such as GROUP BY ROLLUP.THIS BOOK DOES NOT COVER RECENT CHANGES TO SQL FOR ORACLE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for beginners!
This is a really good for a beginner to learn SQL using Oracle. The authors have very clearly explained the complicated terms and concepts, in a fashion we are used to learn in class rooms.

It can also be used as a reference book or as a quick refresher course for someone who have not used SQL in a few years or so.

I strongly recommend this book to everyone interested to learn SQL using Oracle. ... Read more

    Product Description
This pocket reference puts within easy reach the commands that Oracledatabase administrators need most when operating in a Unix environment. If you are an Oracle DBA moving to Unix from another environment such asWindows NT or IBM Mainframe, you know that these commands are fardifferent from those covered in most beginning Unix books. To jump startyour learning process, Don Burleson has gathered together in this handybook the Unix commands he most often uses when managing Oracledatabases. He begins by showing you how to combine simple commands to performcomplex tasks. The book also covers process management commands that youcan use to display and manage Oracle processes, as well as commandsrelated to memory, CPU, semaphore management, monitoring, and diskmanagement.Amazon.com Review
The Unix for Oracle DBAs Pocket Reference has a remarkably tight focus. It's about making Oracle database management systems run optimally under various Unix operating systems, including HP-UX, Sun Solaris, and IBM AIX (there's also some specialized coverage of IRIX and DEC Unix). Author Donald Burleson assumes readers know how to get around the Unix command shell, and that they're quite familiar with Oracle database administration. To put it simply, to get the most out of this book, you should already know what you want to do, and need only to be told concisely how to do it. This book is ideal for people moving from Oracle administration under Windows to the same job under Unix.

As a byproduct of its careful focus, the book is tiny. It almost fits in a shirt pocket, and is about as thick as a standard pencil. A typical entry documents a single command (there are separate entries for different operating systems when commands differ), and includes a bit of text followed by the relevant command and a listing of typical output. Utility scripts with Oracle relevance are listed with minimal comments. This isn't traditional man-page-style Unix documentation, but rather advice on how to accomplish various Oracle goals inside Unix. Most readers will likely turn first to the index to find the entries that they need. --David Wall

Topics covered: Making Oracle database management systems run well under HP-UX, Sun Solaris, IBM AIX, IRIX, and DEC Unix. Ways of examining and adjusting Oracle's use of processes, memory, processor cycles, files, disk resources, and other aspects of the Unix system. Information is presented in recipes, in type-this-to-do-that format. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Tips and Tricks
This booklet contains a collection of shell script code snippets and other UNIX tips for the DBA. Not everything will be useful for everyone, but only the most experienced UNIX geek will fail to find one trick or the other that he did not know before. And what else is UNIX expertise if not knowledge about such little tricks?

I especially liked the sections about commands to collect performance statistics for the UNIX boxes your databases run on. You do not normally find these commands in general UNIX books (not even in the meatiest ones) and would have to turn to special UNIX admin books, which might be sort of an overkill for a mere DBA.

The book also introduces into some very basic UNIX concepts like piping commands and changing file permissions. This is superfluous as this booklet does by no means repalce a full-fledged UNIX introduction. But if you are a DBA who has already read his "UNIX for Beginners" or the like and who wants to delve a little bit deeper into HP-UX or AIX, than this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most useful for Oracle DBAs
This is a very helpful book which provides a basic overview of using Unix running Oracle. Perhaps the best feature of this book is that the author has spent lot of time providing only the most useful and salient Unix scripts for the Oracle DBA. You will not find any unnecessary or redundant information in this book. In fact, I highly recommend all Oracle DBAs to read this book and memorize all its ideas.

Here are some of the best tips:
1)Script to kill all Oracle processes.
2)Place a SQL * Plus script in a Unix Shell Wrapper
3)Ensure that only the Oracle user can run a Unix shell script
4)Execute a SQL*Plus Script on all the instances in the enterprise.
5)Automatically delete old trace and audit files
6)Copy TNSnames.ora to all the Unix servers in the enterprise
7)Detect when Oracle is not accepting connections and send alert

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book for Unix newbies
This booklet is full of usefull Unix commands, most of them at the junior level and just a few more are complex. I used this book maybe 10 times since I bought it a couple of years ago, so I am not sure that I have utilizied my purchase well.

Still, I would recommend the book to any DBA who is new to Unix.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for the UNIX Novice
Decent reference - at least pointing out some interesting options and some things to watch out for at the OS level. As mentioned in other reviews - its HP-UX oriented with nearly as much focus on AIX, but lacks detail on Solaris (and Linux).
Fairly well written - but mainly pretty simple content. Just keeps you from looking up the syntax in some cases. If you are new to UNIX its probably worth the purchase. If you are an experienced UNIX professional - find it used to make it a worth-while purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable book for Oracle dbas who are new in unix
This is a book that should be in the pocket of all Oracle dbas
beginners in unix, and specially those fighting with several
    flavors of unix.
If you are an experienced oracle dba working with Windows NT
or Open VMS and new in unix, thesebook can help you.
It's reading is easy ç, since the book contains the basics that an oracle dba need to know in order to begin working with unix as soon as possible. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
A great book written by a great author. If you really want to become a true professional in database systems, this is for sure one of the books you should read.
It's well organized and clear, and extremely heplful for your professional knowledge

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding read
While this book was written a few years ago the basic information in it is still outstanding.I was able to apply concepts taught in chapter 1 to my system with good results. Each chapter is packed with inside information on how the Oracle system really works.

I highly recommend this book to all Oracle developers and DBAs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't get any better....
I've been a Database guy for some 12 year now since graduating.I've worked on numerous large projects involving complex database problems. This book is THE most well read, THE most frequently referenced book in my collection. It's well written and is THE best learning + refresher guide out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous
the book will teach basic Oracle things and clear the misconcepts, myths and mis understanding prevailing amongst numerous Oracle users.
I am still to finish this book fully, but so far I am so enlightened by reading the first 3 topics of the book.
I recommend to all who are related to Oracle Database to go through this book, which would be very very helpful in understanding the Oracle Database. Also, it would make Oracle a fun to work with instead of huge and cumbersome tool which is the picture in majority of people's mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars If only all Oracle books were this good
This book delivers the clear insight before delving into intricate details on a good selection of topics that are critical to those concerned with deigning and implementating high performance database solutions.

My only wish is that this book covered more ground, especially on newer or perhaps peripheral topics such as RAC, ASM, XMLDB, OCI/OCCI, DataGuard and so on.. but maybe that's asking too much from one book.

Classic Tom Kyte. Get it on your bookshelf today if you implement or support Oracle database solutions for a living. ... Read more

In an effort to provide foresight as systems grow and resources are stressed, this guidebook explains how one of the major causes of unplanned database outages is the failure to anticipate the effects of growth. The benchmark method detailed enables users to spot areas of pending problems before they cripple the database. This real-world approach ensures the user will be prepared for whatever the future brings to mission-critical databases. Areas explored in this book include knowing the limits of the database, avoiding unplanned outages with capacity planning, and predicting the need for new hardware.

2-0 out of 5 stars 20% Good information, 80% infomercial
This book brings some good information and examples about Benchmarking andsome methods for capacity planning. It is shame that too much of it feels like an infomercial for the Quest Benchmarking (and others) Software. The book even comes with a CD with the Software (demo version).
Given price and the names of participants of this book I really expected more than a white-paper worth of information on it. ... Read more
