3-0 out of 5 stars Not the worst, not the best.
A general overview of VBScript.Definately not the best book.If you are used to books like Professional Active Server Pages (Wrox) or JavaScript for the World Wide Web (Peachpit Press), you will be sorely disappointed by this book. One good thing about it is that it gives review questions at the end of every chapter, which I liked, but as far as information goes, it is not the best. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but old
Good book easy to learn from and seems to be laid out in a reasonable manner. I can find the information I want, if it is in the book as this is a OLD book, and then I easily convert the example to re-life use. I am enjoying learning VbScript from this book and will soon be moving on to anewer book. Draw backs of the book are obvious to see, it is five years oldtherefore it is vary dated, it has little information on ASP, the sectionon Internet Explored Object model for Scripting is dated, Newly releasedVBScript functions are VERY DATED. It teaches about Internet Explorerversion 3 as being the NEW VERSION.

Still with all these draw backs Ithink it is a good book to learn VBScript from, it only cost me [the money] asit is outdated. Once I have learned VBScript then I can move on to aReference book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Having no Index is Really Lame
The book is pretty much okay except that it lacks an index. This makes using it as a reference sometimes difficult. If you know exactly what things are called you can look them up in the alphabetical listing. Otherwise, you are kind of screwed.

2-0 out of 5 stars You too, can be an author of a book.
I thought the above critic was being a bit too harsh on an author... untilI read it myself.Although in the "Who needs this Book?" sectionit mentions that "...this book can assist anyone from the beginner tothe accomplished professional programmer.", I have to disagree and saythat a new beginner may be confused by many of the inaccurate and datedstatements. For example, I love the one that says (paraphrasing) youshouldn't use the !DOCTYPE statement because only HTML 3.2 browsers canread it anyway. Why would you ever commit such a line to print??In manycases, this book was outdated before it went to press. It really became aproblem after reading completely inaccurate statements, then not knowingweather following statements were accurate or not.

On the plus side, Iliked the way it was indexed. It offered a good reference resource tothose that couldn't quite remember the exact syntax, but already knew whatthe functions did.I noticed that the "Comprehensive Guide toVBScript" might have been comprehensive THEN, but it's missing a lotTODAY.

I could have probably got the same info online somewhere though, but I always like to have a hard copy handy. This one, however, made mefeel like even I could be an author of a VBscript book. And that's notsaying much.

4-0 out of 5 stars the Comprehensive Guide to VBScript , an excellent reference
True some of the wording in the book is a little off, but the Syntax and the depth of explaination regaurding the tags is invalueable. I have yet to find another reference book that explains the syntaxes and how to use them more complete than in this book. I use it as a reference to HTML 3.2 and ActiveX controls constantly

1-0 out of 5 stars HTML is NOT a programming language!!!!!!!!!

*Could* make a pretty handy dictionary, *if* you can ignore the irritating, inaccurate, and uneducated claims and editorials (mostly found in the introduction/tutorial) all based on the premise that HTML is a programming language.
Examples:
page xxiii: "What in HTML is called a 'tag' is called a 'structure' or 'function' in other languages."--WRONG. HTML tags are simply *tokens* which the browser *parses* to determine the output.
page xxvii: "No other computer programming language comes close to HTML's forgiveness. Try submitting [a text document containing only the string] 'A Simple Page' to Basic, Pascal, C, or any other language. None of them will simply display the words. All of them will choke and throw out an error message."--WRONG!! First, there's no such thing as submitting anything to a language. You *can* 'submit' input to a *program* written in a programming language- such as an internet browser- and if that program is *designed* to handle that input, it *will* simply display the words. Otherwise, if the program is *not designed* to handle the input, it *will* choke and spit out an error message.

It is irritating to have spent money on a developer's reference, written by someone who clearly does not have a grasp of programming *basics*. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Javascript, VBScript, and ASP Programming
In depth programming experience in Javascript, VBScript, ASP, and Access databases (and possibly SQL Server). I highly recommend this book. It is slightly out of date, but 99% of the newer adaptations of the software (i.e. ASP.NET) were found on Microsoft's web site. Many web sites are still using these versions of the software, which is why the book is so valuable. Thank you Kathleen Kalata.

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst books...
This is a terrible book to try to learn internet programming. It is loaded with typos and code errors.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly, Poorly Written
This book was a complete disaster in comparison to other books I've used from Thomsons Course Technology. The examples are extremely thin and you will have to use the internet as a resource because much of the tags and code the book leaves out and you have to fend for yourself.I had to buy this book for a class I am taking. Most of it is totally outdated and I can'tbelieve my school is still using it for the Internet Programming class. What a waste of my money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good educational book for learners
Very good educational book for learners. My only complain it does not include sample code CD-ROM; it would most likely catch all the mispelling. But for teaching material its an excellent book to have.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does not rate a STAR
Very bad examples in this book. Spelling errors, coding errors, you will need to buy other books to figure out what she is trying to teach. She should have read her book before printing it. This book should never have been printed in the first place. Not a good book at all. She provided only part of codes and you have to figure it out yourself. Why do we need her botch attempt at being an author or teacher. SAVE YOUR MONEY on this one. ... Read more

This is a clear, hands-on guide to adding interactivity to Web pages with Microsoft's ActiveX and VBScript. It includes coverage of the new Internet Studio--Microsoft's principal tool for managing ActiveX Controls and VBScript. The CD is designed to be an interactive workshop that the reader can use to follow the examples presented in the book.Amazon.com Review
The order in which ActiveX and VBScript appear in this titleshould be reversed: This book is a solid and detailed tutorial onVBScript and how to use it within an ActiveX browser environment. Theauthors ease you into the subject with simple projects that introduceVBScript, the ActiveX Control Pad (Microsoft's free visual tool foradding ActiveX controls to Web pages), and basic manipulation of HTMLand browser objects through VBScript. With these preliminariesmastered, you move on to a hefty middle section that offers a thoroughgrounding in VBScript. Detailed chapters cover datatypes, variables, operators, events, string manipulation, functions, loops, and single-and multi-dimensional arrays. The author illustrates the discussionwith examples covering many common uses for VBScript, including datavalidation and manipulation of HTML objects.

The final third of thebook concentrates on using VBScript with controls, including the HTMLLayout Control, and on working with image maps, browser objects, andcookies. Other topics include using third-party controls, convertingexisting Visual Basic applications to VBScript Web applications, andunderstanding basic interaction between VBScript and Java applets. Thebook is handsomely designed, clearly laid out, easy to read, andenriched with useful indexes, including a VBScript reference. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best VBScript book!
I like the way Ms. Lemay wrote the book, She makes it easy for a beginner like me in VBscript easier to understand the language. It is like one of her Teach Yourself books! I highly recommend this as a good reference!

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good Intro to ActiveX and VBScript, but ...
This book does a very good job of getting you right into ActiveX, and then slowly adds the VBScript. While the examples on the CD are well documented, I couldn't get a few of them to work (SelectedIndex) for one. However, Iwould recommend this book as both a good reference and usuable tool. Notethat you should have a pretty good understanding of HTML. If you don't,you'll have problems, but the CD has an HTML book on it that is easilyindexed. It helped me out greatly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have even in 1999!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for learning VBScript
I thought this was a pretty good introduction to VBScript. It had severalgood examples and explanations. It was a lot more practical and informativethan most of the other books I looked at.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only VB Script v1.0 covered, no features of v2.0+.
The book doesn't cover any of the added features of VBScript v2 and above. The book covers the VBScript that came out with Internet Explorer 3.0. Although the VBScript 1.0 features that are covered are covered well, themany added functions added in VBScript v2 are missing, such as constants, private and public variables, automatic string joining and splitting intoarrays, and much more. The features not covered work in Internet Explorerv4.0+ and Outlook 98 (which come with VBScript v3.0+)

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good book for leaning VBscript
I was looking for a book that would teach me VBscript. (I have some programming experience.) Though I learned quite a bit from this book, many explanations needed to be more complete and left me to figure them out by experimenting. Not a good reference - no index of commands (most, but not all, are covered in general index in back).

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutly the Best book on VBScript and ActiveX out there!
I work for Microsoft, and use VBScript daily.I have a dozen or so books that I used to reference while doing web design. Now I have everything I need in one book. While most books try to cover it all, this book gives a brief overview and then gets right to the meat of the subject. If you are a complete beginner try another source. For everyone else, this is it! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This is hands down the worst book I have ever seen onVBScript.Let me rephrase that, this is hands down the worst excusefor a computer book in general!

First there is a lack of an actual explanation for anything the author does.He seems to ramble on without truly making sense. The "graphics", if you call equal signs, dashes, and pipes graphics, are inexcusable. If you attempt to "write" a book, at least use screen shots to illistrate your point. Finally, this book bills itself on it's back cover as a handbook for those who want to learn a language but "are stumped by the complexities of learning Java ...... or Perl can now develop web pages ... they've been dreaming about!" Two words for everyone, and I can't type them here. You'll be lucky if you can figure out a single thing if you buy this book.

Basically, don't waste your money on this pitiful excuse for a book unless you want to pay for lining your bird's cage. That is about all this book is good for.I recomend the o'riely book on ASP if you want a reference or a starter book.END ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutley Worthless
There is nothing real-world, quick or easy for web development in thisbook. The author assumes the reader to be already well versed in webdevelopment. There is only enough information given to allow the reader tomake the determination that there is "insufficient information".Although there are many examples, they are not "Real-World"examples and I found them lacking in clarity. There was very little butquite useless information on FTP and HTTP controls (which was what I wasinterested in most). There were too many references to incomplete codesnippits that left the reader hanging. I found more useful documentationfrom the M$ website.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
I was very disappointed with this book. The information about VBScript was not as extensive as I would have liked. The continuous reliance on ActiveX controls made most of the content worthless when doing cross-browserdevelopment. As an introductory book, it was only OK.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but out of date
I found this book useful in many aspects, but its dependance on theActiveX Layout Control really holds it back. (alx doesn't work proprely inIE4 and MS isn't going to fix it either) It is just faced with the sameproblem as most other internet technology publications, which is that itgoes out of date shortly after the ink dries.

At the time, there weren't many books on VBS.This was just about the best out there. Now, I would probably go with an O'Reilly book.Anyway, I thought it was concise and info was easy to find when using as a reference. If you already have experience with using VB, even for just MS Excel and Access (not the full blow language version), this book will benefit you.I just needed a lookup reference on how to do stuff with VBS for the web, and that's exactly what I got. This book helped me to create my first online order calculator for a site that I'm webmaster for. However, if you need more coverage of the VB language, then choose another, more comprehensive book.I think the books assumes that you know something about VB already. If so, then this book is probably enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for developers
I love this book for what it is: a great reference. Both the developer Imentor and myself love this book.It breaks down the IE DOM into easy toread entries. It clearly states syntax and variable ranges. It has onlywhat an experienced developer needs in syntax in an easy to findformat.

Not for learning how to program.

2-0 out of 5 stars very disappointing
The book is actually about how to program in VB for beginners, and the contents about the actual web development aspects are next to none. Examples do not work; online support is poor for that the author changedthe online examples without changing the downloadable codes. Not worthbuying at all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not useful at all
This book is more for reference to VBScript rather than learning VB script. I found the language extreemly difficult to read. It only deals with versions of IE less than 4.5. Not useful for learning or gettingexamples from, does not go into details in all the topics and explanationsare usually not too helpful.

Would be a waste of your money if you buythis book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for seeing an implementation of ASP, but otherwise...
The best reason to read "Building Professional Web Sites", I think, is to see a thorough example of how Active Server Pages can be used to make a web site "dynamic". But you'll need to know somethingof ASP before you begin.

In addition to ASP, the book explains all of theother steps in building the example web site (viewable atwww.theblowhole.com), but it overtreats the simpler material and glossesover the complex. For example, there are pages and pages of figuresshowing what are basically the same installation screens for each piece ofsoftware you'll be using; meanwhile, VBScript code, used in ASP, is oftenput forth as if its purpose and mechanism is obvious. "VisualInterdev" is one of the "tools" the book requires, yet itsfunction is far from obvious. The program is ostensibly for creating ASPpages, but ASP code is never presented in the context of using the Interdevsoftware. Finally, the preface, having almost nothing to do with the restof the book, goes on about programming nostalgia, and is tangential enoughto scare off an earnest beginner.

There is "something foreveryone" here, but that's not a good thing, because you're paying foreveryone else's portion :-). Who, then, is the target reader? This is, as awhole, _definitely_ not for beginners with no programming knowledge, andadvanced users will find much of the book extraneous (how to install yoursoftware, how to make graphic icons in a paint program).Intermediatereaders like me get the most benefit, in terms of the number of subjectswhich are at our level.

Rated "Three stars" since the book hasa fairly grand mission to live up to, and though I find the problems quiteglaring, it is not "poor" by any means.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this one!
Worst book on web development I've ever purchased! Don't waste your money on it.. I glanced through the book once and tossed it on the shelf and never picked it up agian. It jumps from subject to subject never throughlycovering anything. If you need a book on web development, select booksby Wrox Press or O'Reilly. nuf said.Well... AMAZON how do I give it ZEROSTARS?

1-0 out of 5 stars I am speechless.
I am on page 153, and I am speechless.I am angry at the publisher Prentice Hall for not upholding better technical standards and editing. My opinion of Prentice Hall has been severely damaged after reading this book. Finally, I rebuke the authors for their misleading self-promotion on thissite.Readers such as myself deserve to spend our money on qualitytechnical literature.Your work is an insult to your readers' intelligenceand common sense.

Yes, perhaps one should not get so frustrated oremotional over a book. But I am angry and here are my reasons:

(1)When I first read this book I was uneducated about web design and myconfusion over this book's points I attributed to my ignorance; however, Inow realize that this book is majorly flawed.Where to begin? It begins,"You can develop a Web site. You can do it! Yes, YOU! ...I'm going toshow you how..."So, here I am, prepared for the author to hold myhand through the process. Now, if you will, jump to page 114 and, he'stalking about "Normalizing a database."Not just talking aboutthis... on page 100 he's talking about ASP "scope."Ok, yourebut and that say I'm slow on the uptake.Ok, then why are you teachingFrontpage 98!And then jumping to ASP and Normalization! But it getsbetter... so I'm digging into Access database normalization... and then 14pages later, you are telling me the difference between Gif and JPEGS! andhow to optimize them!

Come on authors, whom are you addressing with thisbook! You imply this book is direct towards a general audience and thenyou frequently digress into the most esoteric illustrations of complextopics.

Lastly, to those would be readers of this book, consider page93."That ends our software installation. We also need the Javaclasses for our rotating banner ad.You'll find the code for that at ourWeb site (see Appendix A)."

I thought I was buying the book so thatI could read the code printed! And commented upon! And why are youeven making me go to an Appendix to find the name of your WebSite!

Boy, I can't wait for the second edition of this bookguys!Maybe you'll tell me about the wizards in Frontpage 97 in the year2001!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Learning Tool

2. the defference in the click event sub fora push buton for an AxtiveX command button and for an HTML form button. a.for ActiveX command button, name the sub Click; b. for HTML form button,name the sub OnClick;
