The Transformation of Animals into Food
Competition to produce inexpensive meat, eggs, and dairy products has led animal agribusiness to treat animals as objects and commodities. The worldwide trend is to replace family farms with "factory" farms: warehouses where animals are kept in crowded pens or restrictive stalls. Large numbers of beef cattle, dairy cows, pigs, chickens, and turkeys are raised under such conditions.(

Many breeding sows spend their whole adult lives in gestation and farrowing stalls where they cannot turn around. Pigs in stalls. The federal Animal Welfare Act excludes farmed animals, and most state anticruelty laws exempt standard agricultural practices. These include branding, castrating, dehorning, debeaking, and tail-docking procedures often performed without anesthesia.( Most people who eat meat don't think too deeply about all the processes involved in converting a living animal to meat on their plate...For modern animal agriculture, the less the consumer knows about what's happening before the meat hits the plate, the better. If true, is this an ethical situation? Should we [animal agriculture] be reluctant to let people know what really goes on, because we're not really proud of it and concerned that it might turn them to vegetarianism?

PEST AND EXOTIC ANIMALS
  • Introduced birds and animals can cause problems to agriculture and the environment and there are already a number of them at large in the State causing damage. For other potential pests either already here in captivity or yet to enter the State, it will probably take a long time for their negative effects to become obvious. A number of pest animals that have a negative impact on agricultural production and the environment are either at large or in captivity in Western Australia. These animals are declared according to management categories. Here you will find them listed by common name or scientific name along with their categories and associated advisory information. Animals not included on this list are prohibited in Western Australia.
The impact of declared animals is managed using established procedures. Information on management procedures is provided in Farmnotes, which can be accessed from the common name or scientific name lists of animals, by looking through the

The following interesting discussion was sent to us by Joe Nasr of The Urban Ag. Network. joenasr@compuserve.com I am subscribed to H-Urban, the urban historians' main listserv. Recently, an interesting discussion took place that may be of interest to urban agriculturists - particularly those with a historical bent. A surprising number of historians took part in it over the course of one month. Some of the examples were contemporary. I cut and pasted below the most interesting messages from that discussion. RE: Restrictive covenants on animals
Posted by Clay McShane
While restrictive covenant have been a frequent topic on this list, the discussion has mostly turned on racial restrictions. I'm curious about restrictions on animals. Bob Fogelson at MIT tells me that the deeds for the Olmsted-planned subdivision of Palos Verdes banned chickens and rabbits. A posting here on Fri, 26 Jan 1996 from Susan M. Chase noted restrictive covenants on chickens and horses in Wilmington, Delaware. A local attorney tells me that most suburban subdivision deeds that she sees for post-1950 suburbs contain a ban on chicken-keeping. It's real easy to imagine why such restrictions came into being. Animals smell, may cause disease, their keepers are likely declasse etc., but documentation of this is hard to find. Does anyone know if these restrictions have ever been the subject of public policy debate or tested in the courts or been discussed in other forums?

Livestock Raising A variety of productive livestock reside on the farms in Switzerland: cattle pigs goats sheep ... horses , donkeys, mules, fallow-deer chicken , turkey, ducks, geese, rabbits and bees and for a couple of years now, even lamas ostrich bison and highland cattle . Swiss agriculture could hardly remain viable without the livestock industry. More than two-thirds of the turnover in agriculture is based on the production of milk meat eggs and other animals products.
Not all farms keep productive livestock. About one third of the farms specialise in crop farming, vegetable growing or fruit and vine production. Productive livestock such as horses, sheep and bees are not exclusively kept by farmers. In Switzerland industrial animal production is not possible for different reasons: the animal and water protection laws, maximum limits for animal stock and the fact that the construction of livestock buildings is subject to approval by the authorities. In view of a species appropriate animal husbandry, new methods of husbandry are constantly being tested and introduced. For this reason, one might see cows trudging in the snow, or pigs living in free-range enclosures, which igloos serving as shelters.

ANIMALS IN SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
Betty Bolken, Valley Burkes, Chris Fenick and Mary Nacey
Animals are key players in the future of sustainable agriculture. On our page we are going to address the different ways in which animals can play a role in improving the sustainability of agricultural environments. We will focus on the potential role of animals in reducing chemical applications through their use in weed and pest control, in reducing machinery use through adoption of intensive grazing systems, and their role in increasing the economic value of the farm.
Back to the introduction.

Reduction of Chemical Applications
Back To Top One of the main concerns in todays farming involves the use of chemicals-whether it is insecticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. These chemicals, although they increase productivity, pose some serious side effects, such as environmental pollution, hazards to humans and animals, and also can be costly as well as time consuming to apply. Animals are being used to control these chemical applications by actually using themselves as "natures machines". Sheep and goats are being extensively used in controlling Leafy Spurge, a very noxious weed that has become a serious problem, since it is highly toxic to cattle. Leafy spurge has gotten out of control and has impacted vast areas of the North Central Plains, interfering with cattle ranching. Sheep become addicted to the taste of Leafy Spurge, especially right when it starts to flower out, therefore they have become a prime weapon against this weed. Other animals that definately need to be mentioned are the crawly critters, among which are parasitic wasps, lady bugs, damsel bugs, bore beetles and many others that feed on insects and weeds by either directly attacking the target pests or laying eggs inside for their larvae to feed on. These are all natural, biological ways that animals induce the reduction of chemical use.

, please navigate through our site to find out more information about the Selva Negra Estate. There are many different aspects to our estate, but it can be divided into three primary sections, the mountain resort, coffee plantation and flowers and agriculture. Our estate is self-sustainable, meaning the farm produces everything to maintain itself, from methane gas to various meats and vegetables. The weather in our region is tropical year-round and it allows the cattle to roam freely within the pasture. Vegetables and flowers are grown on the property year round. A trip to the Selva Negra Resort must include a tour of the cattle, horticulture and greenhouses. Read our write-up on farm tours Farm Animals - The animals growing at the farms are used for meat at the restaurant and at the workers kitchen. From the cattle we obtain meat, milk, cream and variety of cheeses. The pigs are used for ham, sausages, smoked pork chops, meat. Chickens provide broilers and eggs, as well as the turkeys, quails and geese. The animal by-products are used as fertilizer for the coffee industry. You may obtain more information on the sustainability page. Cattle The cattle ranching at Selva Negra is an original concept in the country of Nicaragua. http://www.minlnv.nl/international/policy/green/ppa/
Since 1950 nearly 500 of the more than 1 400 plant species in the Netherlands have decreased in number, and more than 40 died out. During the same period the number of species of breeding birds has fallen by a third. The total area of plant and animal habitat is diminishing and fragmentation and isolation as a result of urbanization and expanding infrastructure endanger the survival of wildlife and plants; the deterioration of soil, water and air quality only adds to this.
The government aims at the sustainable conservation, restoration and development of nature and landscape. Of paramount importance is the national ecological network, composed of core areas, nature development areas and ecological corridors. When fully developed, the network is to ensure the survival of plants and animals nationally and internationally.

TRANSPORT OF ANIMALS Transport of animals comprises the transporting of live animals by road, rail, sea, inland waters or air in Finland, between Finland and the other EU Member States as well as between Finland and third countries. The general principles for the transport of live animals are laid down in the Act on Animal Welfare and Decree on the Transport of Animals. According to the Act on Animal Welfare, transporting animals and renting or relinquishing a means of transport for financial gain is subject to a licence from the State Provincial Office of the province where the permanent residence of the applicant is located. More detailed provisions on the animal protection requirements for transport, e.g. means of transport and loading density, are laid down by Decision of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The Decision also contains recommendations, which are not binding. Further requirements for road transports taking more than 8 hours are laid down by Council Regulation F3b. The Department of Food and Health of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry prepares the animal welfare legislation as well as directs, guides and controls the compliance with this. The State Provincial Offices guide and control the compliance with the rules and regulations on animal protection in the provinces, as well as grant the licences for transporting animals for financial gain and registers the licences granted for this activity. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry keeps records of all licences concerning the transport of animals.
