Respondents of the NVRCA Farm Survey overwhelmingly reported May 24, Victoria Day as the special day for garden planting! Fast Facts: Greenhouse production has been steadily increasing in the Nechako Valley. As of May 1996 12 farms reported 56,648 square feet of flowers and vegetable growing under glass or other protection. Field Crops These include wheat, oats, and barley and tame hay forage crops. Grains: A total of 18,952 acres were reported for grains with barley being predominant. Forage: The forage crops grown totaled 60,432 acres with 35,741 in Alfalfa and 24,691 in all other tame hay. Vegetables: Vegetables were reported in small acreages or as gardens. The following vegetables were listed as being grown in the Nechako in a variety of total acreages from small garden plots, up to a total of 8 acres for any one variety. A total of 13 farms reported 24 acres of vegetables in 1996.

Program Description: Trainees with field crop placements will be involved with every aspect of the crop-growing season. Some duties will include machinery maintenance, field preparation, planting, fertilizing, spraying, harvesting and fall tillage. Typical crops grown: corn, soybeans, sugar beets, wheat, alfalfa, oats, and barley. Farms size will vary greatly from about 2000 acres to 10,000 acres. Placements available March/April - November 15.
