French version G R E A T M A S T E R S february 2000 Barye Antoine-Louis Nationality: French Activity: sculptor Average price rate Between US $ 1,000 and 70,000 The son of a goldsmith Barye started to work at 13 as an apprentice to an engraver and then for Bicunais, a goldsmith. Such apprenticeship enabled him to discover the secrets of metals, notably foundry and chiselling methods. Barye then worked in 1816 with Bosio, a sculptor, and studied at the school of Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1818 until 1824. In 1820 he was awarded a second prize medal with a sculpture entitled “Cain cursed by God” and started to earn a living working for Fauconnier, a goldsmith for whom he produced small-size animals. Barye however found his main source of inspiration in the gardens of the Paris Natural Museum (Jardin des Plantes) where he studied captive animals and took a keen interest in anatomy.

Barbedienne, Fondeur A French green/reddish brown-patinated bronze grop entitled "La Force", signed Barye, F. Barbedienne, Fondeur Barye started to exhibit his works in 1827 at the Paris Salon and obtained a second prize in 1831 with his Tiger devouring a Gavial. Still art critics snubbed him and considered his representations of wild animals as mere paper-weights. As a result his Lion at Rest was refused at the 1836 Salon and Barye waited 14 years before being allowed to show his works there. He eventually met success with his Theseus fighting against the Centaur Bienor and took part in the 1855 Universal Exhibition where his Jaguar devouring a hare earned him a first prize. During his career this artist however benefited from the support of the Duke of Orleans in 1834 and produced some monumental pieces for the French State. Antoine Louis Barye (unknown source) Antoine Louis Barye (1796 - 1875) Born in Paris in 1796, Antoine Barye is a strange figure and starts exhibiting in the Parisian salons as soon as 1827 and untill 1831, but as fame is long to come, he will not go back to them before 1850. He is now recognized as one of the major animal sculptors in our country but his work as a painter and as a drawer is also remarkable. From the age of thirteen, he started his training with a master engraver, learned metal techniques but his real school was the Jardin des Plantes in Paris in which he passionately observed living animals, studied their anatomy and read treatises by Cuvier or Lacepede. August, 1999: Spotlight on Animals in Art Because art museums in general do not feel that animals and wildlife are a sufficiently serious subject to devote one's career to, only a handful of artists are well-represented in our database. John James Audubon Antoine-Louis Barye Sir Edwin Henry Landseer Rosa Bonheur , folk artist Edward Hicks Jean-Baptiste Oudry Jacques-Laurent Agasse , and George Stubbs are virtually the only artists who have broken through to become accepted as great artists in their own right. Not a single twentieth-century artist comes to mind. [Postscript: Visitors have pointed out that Deborah Butterfield and Franz Marc have both achieved this kind of critical acceptance. Yet no field has a higher standard for technical excellence. Sometimes it seems like all of the artists with great drafting skills have ended up here. It must be admitted that much of the work has a sentimental or nostalgic feel to it, but I can certainly enjoy sentiment and nostalgia in measured doses. And the underlying theme of all wildlife art today is the ongoing destruction of the natural world. That's a plenty serious subject for anyone to tackle.
