Son of a Parisian goldsmith, he followed his father's trade as a youth. In 1832 he exhibited at the Salon his Lion and Serpent (Tuileries), which won him recognition; but only late in life did he achieve fame and free himself from debt. His simple, romantic, and forceful studies of animals or groups of animals were often small and designed for commercial reproduction in bronze. They enjoyed an international popularity and are still highly prized. Well-known examples of his work are Tiger and Gavial, Jaguar and Hare, Theseus and the Minotaur (all: Louvre), and Centaur and Lapith (Tuileries). He is also represented in the Metropolitan Museum and in the Brooklyn Museum. See C. S. Smith

Antoine-Louis Barye was initially trained in goldsmithing, his father's occupation. After serving in Napoleon's army, he studied sculpture and painting and entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1818. Like the painters Théodore Géricault and Eugène Delacroix , with whom he studied the animals at the Paris zoo, Barye exemplified the Romantic predilection for exotic and violent subjects; many of his bronzes depict wild beasts in combat. At the Salon of 1831, he won a medal for Tiger Devouring a Gavail , a crocodile-like creature. This large-scale sculpture's subject was a radical choice, departing from the Académie's strict hierarchy, which ranked the human figure as art's noblest subject and animals as one of the lowliest. With the success of this work, Barye began working independently as a sculptor and painter. He continued submitting his animal bronzes to the Salons , where they competed on equal terms with sculptures of more traditional human subjects. About 1845 Barye established a foundry to produce small bronzes for France's growing middle class. He was appointed keeper of

Referred to as the "Michelangelo of the menagerie" by critic Théophile Gautier, Antoine-Louis Barye was about sixty when he posed for Nadar. The son of a Parisian jeweler, he studied animal anatomy thoroughly in books, in laboratories, and at the zoo. When a lion died, he and Eugène Delacroix dissected it. Here his stern visage reflects the notably taciturn man who, although he taught drawing, rarely spoke to his students, correcting their work simply by retouching. The overall effect of self-contained if melancholy dignity, of a man who has survived adversity and is beholden to no one, accords well with contemporary descriptions of Barye. His connection with Nadar was probably established through the painters who were friends of both. Barye was seldom photographed, and this image by Nadar, one of the few existing portraits, was later used as the basis for an etching. More About: Nadar / Warhol Home Explore Art Visitor Guide ... The above critical analyses -were attacked and rejected by Clemen (Stud. und Krit., 1898, 211 sqq.). He fails, however, in many cases to recognize the difficulties at issue, and those which cannot be ignored he sets down to the conflicting apocalyptic traditions, on which the author was obliged to draw for his subject-matter~ Though Ryssel (Kautzsch, A p0k. u. Pseud. des A. T. ii. 409) has followed Clemen, neither has given any seal explanation of the disorder ofthe book as it stands at present. Beer (op. cit.) agrees that xxxvi.—xl. and liii.—lxx. are of different authorship from the rest of the book and belong to the earlier date., Relation to 4 Ezra.—The affinities of this book and 4 Ezra are so numerous (see Charles, op. cit. 170-171) that Ewald and Ryle assumed identity of authorship. But their points of divergence are so weighty (see op. cii. pp. lxix.-lxxi.) that this view cannot be sustained. Three courses still remain open. If we assume that both works’ are composite, we shall perforce admit that some of the constituents of 4 Ezra are older than the latest of Baruch, and that other constituents of Baruch are decidedly older than the remaining ones of 4 Ezra. On the other hapd, if we assume unity of authorship, it seems impossible to arrive at finality on the chronological relations of these two works. Langen, Hilgenfeld, Wieseler, St ahelin, Renan, Hausrath, Drummond, Dillmann, Rosenthal, Gunkel, have maintained on various grounds the priority of 4 Ezra; and Schurer, Bissell, Thomson, Deane, Kabisch, De Faye, Welihausen, and Ryssel the priority of Baruch on grounds no less convincing.

Barye, Antoine Louis (1795-1875). - http://www.boj.org

Antoine Louis Barye (1796 - 1875) Born in Paris in 1796, Antoine Barye is a strange figureand starts exhibiting in the Parisian salons as soon as 1827 and untill 1831, but as fame is long to come, he will not go back to them before 1850. He is now recognized as one of the major animal sculptors in our country but his work as a painter and as a drawer is also remarkable "Antoine Barye" (gravue -B.N) From the age of thirteen, he started his training with a master engraver, learned metal techniques but his real school was the Jardin des Plantes in Paris in which he passionately observed living animals, studied their anatomy and read treatises by Cuvier or Lacepede.
