Jean-Michel Basquiat
was born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York. His father, Gerard Basquiat was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and his mother, Matilde was born in Brooklyn of Puerto Rican parents. Jean-Michel Basquiat's productive career spanned just one short decade, yet he is considered one of the best-known artists of his generation and one of only a small number of Hispanic-African-American artists to have achieved international recognition. Graduating from subway walls to canvas and from the streets of New York to the galleries of SoHo, the artist and his work will forever remain a mystery to those who seek explanation. Jean-Michel's early years were spent with his middle class Haitian father, Gerard, who was unable to fulfill his son's need for nurturing and recognition. To fill the void, Jean-Michel hit the streets of New York at a young age where art became an outlet for his anger and empty childhood. Also known by the tag "SAMO," Jean-Michel's unique brand of graffiti was found throughout Manhattan as early as 1976. "His work from the first consisted of conceptual, enigmatic combinations of words and symbols, executed with the curt simplicity of a late Roman inscription", according to Henry Geldzahler, longtime curator of twentieth-century art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Jean-Michel was 18 when he approached Geldzahler and Andy Warhol in a SoHo restaurant. He sold Andy a postcard for one dollar but was dismissed by Geldzahler as "too young." Less than three years later (1981) he was invited by artist and filmmaker, Diego Cortez, to participate in the P.S. 1 show, (Institute for Art and Urban Resources), alongside more than twenty artists including Keith Haring, Robert Mapplethorpe, Kenny Sharf and Andy Warhol.

Jean-Michel Basquiat
In early 1982 Jean-Michel took the art world by storm with his rampageous one-man show at Annina Nosei's gallery. This momentum propelled him to the forefront of the Neo-Expressionist movement. Jean-Michel, accustomed to pushing the envelope in all aspects of his life, had something special to offer the neo-expressionist admirer: "I cross out words so you will see them more - the fact that they are obscured makes you want to read them."

Sept 21 - Nov 23, 1996 When he died in 1988 at the age of twenty-seven, Jean-Michel Basquiat left an astonishing body of work, remarkable in its diversity of subject matter, materials and quality. His greatness lay in his ability to integrate African-American culture, the love of music, pop-culture, and the history of jazz into an extraordinary visual language. Basquiat truly raised his voice above the din of the hectic era that was the 1980's. His work exhibits a frenetic and driven need to express and define his role in the larger world, and within the urban multi-ethnic culture of New York. -text courtesy of the Tony Shafrazi Gallery

His career, both actual and posthumous, appealed to a cluster of toxic vulgarities. First, the racist idea of the black as naif or rhythmic innocent, and of the black artist as "instinctual," someone outside "mainstream" culture and therefore not to be rated in its terms: a wild pet for the recently cultivated collector. Second, a fetish about the freshness of youth, blooming among the discos of the East Side scene. Third, guilt and political correctness, which made curators and collectors nervous about judging the work of any black artist who could be presented as a "victim." Fourth, art-investment mania. And last, the audience's goggling appetite for self-destructive talent: Pollock , Montgomery Clift. All this gunk rolled into a sticky ball around Basquiat's tiny talent and produced a reputation.

Catharton Artists B Basquiat, Jean-Michel : My recollections of Jean Michel, 1983 Jean-Michel Basquiat Article: My recollections of Jean Michel, 1983 Author: John Seed from http://www.johnseed.com/basquiat.html (The following article does not represent the views of Catharton, but was submitted to it by an individual, and should only be taken as representing their views. Basically, we didn't write it, someone else did!)
When I met Jean-Michel Basquiat in 1983 he came to the door naked. I had been sent to the place he was living in Venice, California by an art dealer who was planning a show for him. It was going to be my job to make his stretcher bars and canvasses, and to do errands in general. He had probably just woken up ( it was early afternoon ), and led me into the gallery space he was living in and wrapped himself in a towel.
He was living in a room that had only two pieces of furniture that I remember: a mattress with no box spring and a small TV set set at the head of the mattress. As I later learned that he had once lived in a cardboard box in a New York park, the lack of furniture must have been a habit. However, the floor was covered with an amazing array of clutter: art history books, cassette tapes, art supplies, and clothing including lots of paint spattered Armani that I took to the dry cleaners in a plastic garbage bag. Then there was the more: lots of drawings on the floor, many having been walked on, art supplies including oilsticks, paintbrushes and rollers, and last, but not least, bags of marijuana, and wads of cash.

Basquiat became known as a graffiti artist in late 1970s New York, when black Hip Hop music and breakdancing were in their prime, and then as one of the star artists of the 1980s. Born to Puerto Rican parents, Basquiat struggled in the white man's art world, creating his own distinctive realm in a brief moment, but then died of drug overdose at the young age of 27, as if racing past the age. This work was created when Basquiat was 24. The graffiti-like symbols and letters, and the tangled images go beyond a simple single meaning, standing rather as a paean to the cacophony of New York's energetic, diversely bustling streets.
