Beardsley, Aubrey,
Letter : 1896 Aug. 16.
Manuscript Number: MS 0001 1 item (1 leaf) ; Agency History/Biographical note:

Aubrey (Vincent) Beardsley, an English artist, was born in 1872 in Brighton, England to Ellen Agnes Pitt and Vincent Paul Beardsley. After his schooling at Brighton, he worked in an architect's office. He then became a clerk in the office of the Guardian Insurance Company. His first important commision was the illustration of "Morte d'Arthur" written by Sir Thomas Malory, for which he produced over five hundred designs. In 1894, he became art editor of "Yellow Book" which produced and published many of his most original works. Many believe this periodical produced the purest literature of the 1890's. Shortly thereafter he joined the production of the "Savoy" to which he contributed poems and prose. Aubrey Beardsley died on March 16, 1898. Scope and Content:
A short letter with oblique reference to Beardsley's recent illness and his move to Boscombe. Published in: Letters from Aubrey Beardsley to Leonard Smithers. London: First Editions Club, 1937.

Aubrey Vincent Beardsley of 1
Born 1872, Died 1898
Author, Draftsman

"I seldom or never advise anyone to take up art as a profession, but in your case I can do nothing else," another artist told Aubrey Beardsley upon seeing his work in 1891. From a young age, Beardsley displayed a natural aptitude for drawing. Despite little formal training, he devoted his energies to art and produced drawings that revealed broad influences including Greek vase-painting, Japanese prints, French Rococo decoration, and the paintings of Andrea Mantegna. Embarking upon a brief yet brilliant career, Beardsley received a commission to illustrate a new edition of the King Arthur legend in 1893. The following year he became the art editor and illustrator of a new quarterly journal, The Yellow Book . Beardsley's illustrations for Oscar Wilde's celebrated play Salomé earned him his greatest professional acclaim, but his professional association with the flamboyant Wilde led to dismissal from the journal. Beardsley quickly rebounded, however, and became principal illustrator of another new magazine. During this period he also illustrated numerous books and composed poetry and prose. Aware that he was dying of tuberculosis, Beardsley pushed himself to explore new psychological and erotic realms. Ill from the age of seven, he died in Paris at twenty-five.

Biographical Sketch
Aubrey Vincent Beardsley was born in Brighton on 21 August 1872 and early showed artistic ability, acting and playing in concerts with his sister Mabel and producing drawings of recognized merit. The Beardsley family's means were modest, and by 1888 Aubrey had quit school to work as a clerk. At the age of nineteen Aubrey Beardsley embarked on a career as an illustrator, and with the encouragement of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes in France and Joseph Pennell in England he quickly made a name for himself. His fame was ensured with the publication of the Dent edition of Malory's LE MORTE DARTHUR in 1892, and by the following year the "Beardsley boom" was in full flower. During 1897 Aubrey Beardsley's health continued to decline as serious work became increasingly difficult and his creative output dwindled. His death occurred at Menton, France, on 16 March 1898. Adolphe Gladstone Millott Severn was a British physician as well as a student and collector of Beardsley.

beard in order. About this time the clergy began to break with the long tradition of smooth faces. A priest in 1531 is commanded to abstain from wearing a beard, and Cardinal Pole, coming from the court of a bearded pope, appears bearded like a Greek patriarch. The law too, the church’s kinswoman, begins to forbid, a sign of the change, and from 1542 the society of Lincoln’s Inn makes rules for fining and expelling those who appear bearded at their mess, rules which the example of exalted lawyers caused to be withdrawn in 1560. The footman, whose full-dress livery is the court dress of a hundred years ago, must show no more than the rudimentary whisker of the early eighteen-hundreds, and butler, coachman and groom come under the same rule. The jockey and the hunt whip are shaven likewise, but the courier has the whiskers and moustache that once marked him as a foreigner in the English milor’s service, and the chauffeur, a servant with no tradition behind him, is often moustached. Lastly, we may speak of the practice of the royal house since England came out of the beardless century. The regent took the new fashion, and sat “in whiskered state,” but his brother and successor shaved clean and disliked even the hussar’s moustache. The prince consort wore the moustache as a young man, adding whiskers in later years. King Edward VII. wore moustache and trimmed beard, and his heir apparent also followed the fashion of many fellow admirals. (0. BA.)

The Art of Aubrey Beardsley:
A Fin de Siecle Critique of Victorian Society by Erin Smith In the cultural sphere, many intellectuals feared that Victorian society had become static. Matthew Arnold, expressed this fear in Culture and Anarchy (1869), arguing that the point of culture is "not having a resting, but a growing and a becoming." < > In the 1880's, many avant-garde artists and writers challenged the mainstream Victorian art scene which they considered static and outmoded. This reaction became manifest in the so-called "Decadent" art movement which exhibited an extreme expression of Fin de Siecle pessimism. < During the period of the "Decadence" (1880-1900), artists and writers reacted against high Victorian values. < > The Decadents preferred pessimism to optimism, the decayed to the living, the abnormal to the normal, and the artificial to the natural. As avantgarde artists, they were constantly engaged in a search for the new. In society, they looked to the "New Woman" and the "new hedonism," and culturally, there was "new drama" and Art Nouveau. < > They were influenced by the aestheticism of the 1870's whose slogan was "art for art's sake," where art was appreciated solely for its intrinsic pleasure. <

Beardsley, Aubrey Vincent 1872-98, English illustrator and writer, b. Brighton. Beardsley exemplifies the aesthetic movement in English art of the 1890s (see decadents ). In his short working span of only six years, he developed a superbly artificial and graphic manner, expressed in flat, linear, black and white designs. His works were by turns erotic and cruel in emphasis. The art editor of the famous Yellow Book quarterly (1894-96), Beardsley also edited and contributed some of his best work to Leonard Smithers's periodical, The Savoy, and illustrated many books including Wilde's (1894), Pope's Rape of the Lock (1896), Aristophanes' Lysistrata (privately pub., 1896), and Jonson's Volpone (1898). His fiction, distinguished by an elaborate and erudite prose style, was collected and published in 1904 as Under the Hill. Criticized for the erotic character of his work and condemned for his association with Oscar Wilde, Beardsley fell from public favor. Ravaged by tuberculosis, he died at the age of 26.
