La mostra veneziana (curata da Giovanna Nepi Sciré e da Rona Goffen) presenta 20 quadri dell'artista e offre un tour nelle calli veneziane per contemplare le immagini belliniane dipinte nelle chiese di San Giovanni Crisostomo, Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, San Zaccaria, San Giobbe e San Pietro Martire a Murano. Alla luce dei recenti restauri la retrospettiva focalizza l'interesse sul colore applicato da Bellini alla tavola/tela tramite le analisi stratigrafiche, le riflettografie computerizzate agli infrarossi, le radiografie e infine le fluorescenze all'ultravioletto. Ma soprattutto obiettivo primario è rivelare la Pittura colta di Giovanni, la sua interpretazione del paesaggio non come semplice quinta scenica ma come metafora religiosa di natura mariana. Un giusto riconoscimento per un pittore fondamentale per lo sviluppo dell'arte moderna per troppo tempo trascurato dalla critica ufficiale - fatta eccezione per studiosi come Eugenio Battisti, Augusto Gentili e Rona Goffen. Giovanni Bellini è noto per la serie di "Madonne con Bambino". "La Madonna con Bambino benedicente", già ai Camerlenghi (sede dei cassieri di Stato), e ora sita all'Accademia, è datata al 1470 ca. Il Bimbo poggia i piedini contro il margine lievemente aggettante di un cornicione che in realtà è un sarcofago: ricorda il prossimo sacrificio di Cristo, come gli stessi sguardi rassegnati di madre e figlio avallano. Sul fondo, il paesaggio: un colle alla destra di Maria; una città alla sinistra, entrambi simboli di Maria intesa come montagna irremovibile e come città fortificata, attributi ricorrenti nella Patristica come nel Cantico dei Cantici.

His early work, executed in tempera, reflected a confluence of Byzantine stiffness and the analytical precision of the Flemish. Soon Bellini trained himself to become one of the early masters in the techniques of oil painting. He was later influenced by Donatello (to whose works he was exposed while executing with his father and brother the Pala Gattamelata for the Church of Sant'Antonio da Padova) and by the work of his sister's husband, Andrea Mantegna By 1479 Bellini had succeeded his brother in executing a cycle of great historical scenes for the Chamber of the Grand Council [Maggior Consiglio] in the Doge's Palace. Giovanni Bellini's six or seven canvases in the series, acclaimed as among his masterpieces, were destroyed in the devastating Palace fire of 1577. GIOVANNI BELLINI Feast of the Gods By Giovanni Bellini INTRODUCTION Giovanni Bellini was the most important painter active in Venice in the late 15th Century. BACKGROUND Giovanni was born in Venice in 1430 where he was later raised by his mother and father, Jacopo Bellini and Anna Reversi. Giovanni's father, Jacopo, was also an Italian Renaissance artist. Jacopo was taught by Gentile du Fabriano. Jacopo later named his oldest son Gentile after his teacher, Gentile du Fabriano. Gentile Bellini later died on Febuary 23, 1507. Giovanni also had a sister Niccolsa who married Andrea Mantegain. Andrea was also a Renaissance painter. Before Giovanni became popular he was an apprentice in his father's workshop. Then later when Giovanni mastered painting he taught Giorgione and Titian who later outdid their own teacher. Then a little while later Giovanni died at the age of 86 in 1516. He was buried in Venice. A while after his death most of his greatest works were destroyed in a church fire in the year of 1577. ACCOMPLISHMENTS Giovanni had some very beautiful effects in the way he painted. His paintings have a hazy warm light. The colours are deep and glowing. Light and shade give the paintings a softening effect. He painted in oils.

But there is another great artist who is sometimes overlooked, even though he is officially considered the founder of the Venetian school of painting. P artly because he lived so long (circa 1430-1516), Giovanni Bellini was in many ways the protagonist of a profound change in Venetian art. When he was born, the Republic was in the throes of grafting a late Gothic style onto the city's existing layer of Byzantine splendor. Giovanni spent his childhood working as an apprentice in the very successful workshop of his father Jacopo, during the years when the decoration of St. Mark's Basilica was in full swing. T hen, in 1453, his elder sister married Andrea Mantegna, one of the most advanced students of perspective in all of northern Italy. Giovanni was deeply impressed by his brother-in-law's evolutionary work, just as he was later amazed by the ability of Piero della Francesca and Antonello da Messina to place groups of people within complex three-dimensional settings, something that had been virtually unknown just a few years before. A mong Venetian artists, Bellini led the way in fostering the style of "tonalism," which gave less importance to design and graphics while highlighting the tones of light and color. By the time Titian was starting his career, the elderly Bellini was breaking new ground again by adding mythological and allegorical scenes to the religious ones that had dominated the art of the fifteenth century.

Bellini, Giovanni Bellini, Giovanni (1430?-1516). The founder of the Venetian school of painting, Giovanni Bellini raised Venice to a center of Renaissance art that rivaled Florence and Rome. He brought to painting a new degree of realism, a new wealth of subject matter, and a new sensuousness in form and color. Giovanni Bellini was born in Venice, Italy, in about 1430. Little is known about his family. His father, a painter, was a pupil of one of the leading 15th-century Gothic revival artists. Giovanni and his brother probably began their careers as assistants in their father's workshop. In his early pictures, Bellini worked with tempera, combining a severe and rigid style with a depth of religious feeling and gentle humanity. From the beginning he was a painter of natural light. In his earliest pictures the sky is often reflected behind human figures in streaks of water that make horizontal lines in narrow strips of landscape. The Agony in the Garden was the first of a series of Venetian landscape scenes that continued to develop for the next century.
