BERNINI, Gian Lorenzo
(b. 1598, Napoli, d. 1680, Roma)
Biography
Italian artist who was perhaps the greatest sculptor of the 17th century and an outstanding architect as well. Bernini created the Baroque style of sculpture and developed it to such an extent that other artists are of only minor importance in a discussion of that style. Early years Bernini's career began under his father, Pietro Bernini, a Florentine sculptor of some talent who ultimately moved to Rome. The young prodigy worked so diligently that he earned the praise of the painter Annibale Carracci and the patronage of Pope Paul V and soon established himself as a wholly independent sculptor. He was strongly influenced by his close study of the antique Greek and Roman marbles in the Vatican, and he also had an intimate knowledge of High Renaissance painting of the early 16th century. His study of Michelangelo is revealed in the St Sebastian (c. 1617), carved for Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, who was later Pope Urban VIII and Bernini's greatest patron. Bernini's early works attracted the attention of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a member of the reigning papal family. Under his patronage, Bernini carved his first important life-size sculptural groups. The series shows Bernini's progression from the almost haphazard single view of

St. Peter's, Rome * the spear still does survive (relic)
* lifesize
* Bernini always introduces 'something new' * wasn't carved out of one block of marble, but multiple pieces, and then put together. This is taken from the classical style of sculpture. In this way he could open up sculpture. In this way he could help motion of the sculptures. Previous sculptures were limited by the space of marbels * he needed a statue that would be of the 'proper' proportion, and the grandeur that followed the scale of St. Peter's * Baroque thing: they begin to leave space, to include 'us' the viewer. * figure is looking up, looks across 'real' space towards the altar. * the 17th century begins to break down the barrier between our world and the space of the art * emptions of the figure, most difficult part to portray:

No one could make marble do what Bernini did: portrait bust , Bernini cranked out a masterpiece ... and then, discovering a hairline crack in the block of marble, carved a second bust, virtually identical, in only fifteen days performing a little discreet plastic surgery on his host, shrinking the tubby double chin, making the shocked-cow expression more philosophical. He could paint too, as in this self-portrait But he went Hollywood. Though he lived until the age of 82 65 years of actively practicing his art one pope after another recruited or dragooned him into the church's service. He designed St. Peter's, and having designed it, decorated it, with massive ecclesiastical statues toned down from the sensual, almost lascivious pagan mythic figures of his youth. St. Peter's is impressive, and amidst the Counter-reformation one could imagine Bernini believing there could be no higher cause than defense of the most Holy Catholic Church ... but examining his Vatican statues, or the enormous ugly baldacchino that is St. Peters' internal focal point, one can only regret that so much genius was directed to so much statist monument.

Each book has something to commend it. Scribner's prose is by far the most passionate, easiest to read, and most informative for the general reader. The Wittkower is a bit dry and academic while the English translation of the Fagiolo is poorly done and shorter on material than either of the other two (understandable, since it's a shorter book). Since it is impossible to properly study or appreciate Bernini without the availability of the close-ups that really magnify his skill and genius, I would recommend buying the Wittkower over the Scribner. The Fagiolo has a good mix of photographs and is cheapest of all, but may only be available in Italy.

one of the sculpturs that will be studied in the module. Objectives By the end of the course students should have acquired:
  • a sound knowledge of Bernini’s key works (c. 1615-1680) an understanding of the aesthetic principles of Italian baroque art an awareness of the political, religious and moral messages behind Bernini’s works
Organisation Teaching will be by seminars (4-6 hours per week) and there might be a field trip. Description Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) was by far the most influential artist of the Italian baroque. He started off as a child prodigy, soon conquered papal favour and was involved in every major project of several successive popes, thus giving the city of Rome its new baroque face. He excelled as a sculptor as well as an architect, striving for a “unity of the visual arts” that combined painting, sculpture and architecture in one overwhelming whole. The course focuses on Bernini’s great Roman masterworks: secular and religious sculptures, fountains, piazze, palaces, altars, churches and chapels. We will discuss Bernini’s aesthetics, uncover the hidden messages behind his works and explore the ways in which Bernini’s collaboration with the papacy brought about a new “image” of the papal city. ²z¡G "The Piazza of St Peter's was built by Bernini for Pope Alexander VII in 1656-67. It was conceived as a grand approach to the church but had to be planned so that the greatest number of people could see the Pope give his blessing, either from the middle of the facede of the church or from a window in the Vatican Palace." "Four rows of simple and majestic Doric columns 300 all together ? carved from Roman travertine form an oval 650 feet across the long axis marked by three monuments: laterally by fountains propelling tall jets of water and in the center by an Egyptian obelisk that had served as a turning post in the chariot races at the ancient Circus of Nero. As they enter the piazza, the faithful are embraced by "the motherly arms of the church," Bernini's own description of his Colonnade. The Colonnade becomes simultaneously a dramatic frame for the church, a nurturing enclosure for the crowds of faithful, and a stage for the processions and other sacred spectacles on which, at this particular period, the Catholic Church so strongly depended for its appeal."

Gian Lorenzo Bernini Nato a Napoli nel 1598, morto a Roma nel 1680.
Fu architetto, pittore, poeta, scenografo, scultore.

Bernini, Giovanni Lorenzo or Gianlorenzo , Italian sculptor and architect, b. Naples. He was the dominant figure of the Italian baroque David Rape of Proserpine (1622), and Apollo and Daphne (1625), were done for Scipione Cardinal Borghese, one of the most important patrons of the period. These are all in the Borghese Gallery, Rome. Popes Urban VIII, Innocent X, and Alexander VII gave him unparalleled opportunities to design churches, chapels, fountains, monuments, tombs, and statues. In 1629, Bernini was appointed architect of St. Peter's. He designed the ornate baldachin under the dome, the Cathedra Petri (the monument enshrining St. Peter's chair), and the exuberant marble decorations of the chapels and nave. During the 1640s he designed the Cornaro Chapel as well as that of Santa Maria della Vittoria. From 1656 onward he worked on the great elliptical piazza and the vast, embracing arms of the colonnades in front of the church. Much of Bernini's sculpture combines white and colored marbles with bronze and stucco, most effectively used in Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome, where he represented the
