I have the two main American books on Bernini; the Scribner and the Wittkower, plus the Scala edition by Maurizio Fagiolo from their "Great Masters of Art" series. Each book has something to commend it. Scribner's prose is by far the most passionate, easiest to read, and most informative for the general reader. The Wittkower is a bit dry and academic while the English translation of the Fagiolo is poorly done and shorter on material than either of the other two (understandable, since it's a shorter book). Since it is impossible to properly study or appreciate Bernini without the availability of the close-ups that really magnify his skill and genius, I would recommend buying the Wittkower over the Scribner. The Fagiolo has a good mix of photographs and is cheapest of all, but may only be available in Italy.

Ellen Haverkate Giovanni Bernini was architect, schilder, tekenaar en beeldhouwer. Hij wordt gezien als de grootse beeldende kunstenaar van de Barok. Bernini was even veelzijdig en bijna even beroemd als Michelangelo. Zijn naam als architect was zelfs zo groot dat Lodewijk XIV hem naar Parijs liet komen om plannen te maken voor de uitbereiding van het Louvre.
Bernini - Zelfportret (1624) Giovanni Bernini werd in 1598 geboren in Napels. Hij kreeg les in de werkplaats van zijn vader, Pietro Bernini, die schilder en beeldhouwer was. Hij kreeg eerst les in schilderen en heeft dat ook tot zijn achtste gedaan, daarna ging hij zich bezighouden met de eeldhouwkunst. Als zestienjarige voerde hij al zelfstandig opdrachten uit. Bernini's eerste opdrachtgever was kardinaal Scipione Borghese. Hij maakte onder andere "Anchises en Ascanius" (1618-1619) "Pluto en Proserpina"(1621-1622) en "Apollo en Daphne" (1622-1625) voor hem. Zijn belangrijkste opdrachtgever was paus Urbanus VIII; voor hem maakte Bernini het eerste meesterwerk van Barokdecoratie: de bronzen baldakijn van de St. Pieter (1624-1633). Boven het graf van Petrus verheft zich het reusachtige kunstwerk. De rijkdom aan details, de gigantische zuilen en de gebogen vormen maken dit kunstwerk van Bernini tot het symbool van de ingrijpende verandering van stijl die zich in de kunst had voltrokken.

Gianlorenzo Bernini De Romeinse Barok is vooral verbonden met de naam van een man die als kind reeds in het atelier van zijn vader Pietro Bernini uit kleine blokken marmer verbluffende kunstwerken schiep: Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680). Zijn carrière nam op jonge leeftijd al een hoge vlucht en hij werkte tientallen jaren bijna uitsluitend in opdracht van de diverse pausen. Hij beschikte over een grote werkplaats met beeldhouwers, stukadoors en bronsgieters en zijn roem reikte tot ver over de landsgrenzen. In voortdurende competitie met zijn grote rivaal Francesco Borromini heeft hij als geen ander met zijn kerken en paleizen en zijn pleinen en fonteinen Rome het barokke aanzien gegeven dat nog steeds zo bepalend is voor het stadsbeeld. Zijn opdrachtgevers hoopten dat hij de 'Michelangelo van zijn eeuw' zou worden, en die hoop werd door de kunstenaar waargemaakt, want Bernini was meer dan alleen architect en beeldhouwer. Hij ontwierp complete interieurs, waarin hij de verschillende kunsten liet samenkomen in indrukwekkende en betekenisvolle 'Gesamt-kunstwerke'. Hij was een begenadigd schilder en tekenaar, met een voorliefde voor de karikatuur, een genre waarin hij zelfs zijn grote opdrachtgevers niet ontzag. Daarnaast hield hij zich bezig met stadsplanning, het ontwerpen van decorstukken, de aankleding van feesten en allerlei andere vormen van decoratie. Bernini, Gianlorenzo The single most important artistic talent of the Italian baroque. Although most significant as a sculptor, he was also highly gifted as an architect; painter; draftsman; designer of stage sets, fireworks displays, and funeral trappings; and playwright. His art is the quintessence of high baroque energy and robustness ( see Baroque Art and Architecture). His ability to suggest textures of skin or cloth as well as to capture emotion and movement in sculpture was uncanny. Bernini reformed a number of sculptural genres, including the portrait bust, the fountain, and the tomb. His influence was widespread throughout the 17th and 18th centuries and was felt by such European masters as Pierre Puget, Pietro Bracci, and Andreas Schlüter. Bernini's life was dominated by his work, and his biography can be traced through the immense number of projects he undertook. His career developed almost entirely in Rome, although he was born in Naples. His father, Pietro Bernini, a talented sculptor of the late Mannerist style, was his son's first teacher ( see Mannerism). Young Gianlorenzo soon surpassed his father in excellence, however, as is known from the principal sources of information on Bernini: the biography by Filippo Baldinucci in 1682 and the biography by the artist's son Domenico in 1713.
