Help Annual Sir Robert Birley Memorial Lecture This annual public lecture takes place in March, in memory of Sir Robert Birley, first head of the department of Social and Human Sciences at City University. The lectures cover subjects which were of interest to Sir Robert in his lifetime. The first lecture was given by former liberal leader, Jo Grimond in 1984. Other past speakers include Barones s Blackstone, Minister for State for Education and Employment Helmut Schmidt, the former German Chancellor and The Times columnist and author Lord Rees Mogg This year, the lecture was given by Francis Cairncross, Chair, Economic and Social Research Council , titled Social Sciences: What Future? The lecture was featured in Podium in the Independent on Friday 15 March 2002. Social Sciences: What Future? Francis Cairncross, Chair, ESRC 14 March 2002, City University, London I met Sir Robert Birley, in whose honour this lecture is named, only once, at the very end of his long life. He was a tall, gaunt figure, who looked like a cross between God and Ghandi. He must have been an awe-inspiring headmaster of Eton. Several of my colleagues on The Economist were there during his time, and one remembers how, as a young teenager, he would watch Birley’s enormous shoes stride up the aisle in chapel every day.

Windsor Collections and their connections! The First Lord Fairhaven (1869 -1966) was primarily responsible for all one sees today at Anglesey. He was actively collecting for; and improving the site, between 1930 and the time of his death in 1966. As a result the National Trust now cares for a site that is of great interest to many people on a variety of levels. The gardens for example are the site of one of the largest collections of statuary and sculpture in the country, comprising of 104 individual pieces. Lord Fairhavens' almost fanatical collecting habits are well represented inside the house as well. In fact as one traces some of the themes that run through what can only be described as an 'eclectic' collection, you can start to build up an image of the man himself . The contents of Anglesey span 9 Centuries of history. The earliest items being those form the original occupants of the site, the Augustinian monks of the 12 th Century, these include a 'quern' . This is a small hand operated grinding machine used for milling flour. Although being functional, it is decorated around the top in the form of a sleeping fox. The collection contains numerous examples of 20 th Century art. The above Painting of the 'First Lord Fairhaven in full military dress' by Sir Oswald Birley (1925) is a prime example. In additon, when the house was extensively re-furbished under Lord Fairhaven, the most up to date soft furnishings, fixtures and fittings were used. Pasadena's balmy climate nurtured its growth as a health resort and a retirement community. Like most Southern Californians of this period, Pasadenans vigorously nurtured the domestic ideal. Land of Sunshine, Influences on the Greenes were eclectic, but all influences led them in the direction of aesthetic functionalism. "I seek till I find what is truly useful," said Charles Sumner Greene, "and then I try to make it beautiful." From John Ruskin, William Morris, and the English Arts and Crafts Movement in general, the Greenes absorbed a sense of architecture as deliberate social statement. Their homes, like Pasadena, were metaphors of an America brought to liberality, simplicity, and taste. The vernacular traditions of Northern Europe, Switzerland and Norway especially, taught the Greenes how to use wood with bold simplicity and sculptured playfulness. At the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, they found themselves enchanted by the airy modernity of Japanese design. Something Japanese, some severity of line and abstraction of space, also pervaded their Pasadena creations. By the early 1900s their style had matured to the level evident in their acknowledged masterpiece, the house they designed and built in 1908 for David B. Gamble of Procter and Gamble (who retired to Pasadena in 1895) at 4 Westmoreland Place.
