Top of Page Home E-Mail Buchhandlungen ... Lieferbedingungen

Bosch, Hieronymus
Biography
Hieronymus, or Jerome, Bosch , b. c.1450, d. August 1516, spent his entire artistic career in the small Dutch town of Hertogenbosch, from which he derived his name. At the time of his death, Bosch was internationally celebrated as an eccentric painter of religious visions who dealt in particular with the torments of hell. During his lifetime Bosch's works were in the inventories of noble families of the Netherlands, Austria, and Spain, and they were imitated in a number of paintings and prints throughout the 16th century, especially in the works of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Bosch was a member of the religious Brotherhood of Our Lady, for whom he painted several altarpieces for the Cathedral of Saint John's, Hertogenbosch, all of which are now lost. The artist probably never went far from home, although records exist of a commission in 1504 from Philip the Handsome (later king of Castile), for a lost Last Judgment altarpiece. None of Bosch's pictures are dated, although the artist signed many of them. Contributors: Michael Shephard, Mark Harden and Carol Gerten-Jackson.

Death and the Miser
c. 1490 (210 Kb); Oil on wood, 93 x 31 cm (36 5/8 x 12 1/8 in); National Gallery of Art, Washington
A moral tale
Another of Bosch's panel paintings, Death and the Miser , serves as a warning to anyone who has grabbed at life's pleasures, without being sufficiently detached, and who is unprepared to die. Who can feel indifferent to this fable? In a long and concentrated Bosch sets out the whole painful scenario. The naked and dying man has been a man of power: at the bed's foot, but sundered now by a low wall, lies his armour. His riches have come through combat; the sick man has fought for his wealth and stored it close to him. He appears twice, the second time in full health, soberly dressed because he hoards his gold, dense with satisfaction as he adds another coin. Demons lurk all around, death puts a leering head around the door (notice the sick man's surprise: death is never expected), and the final battle begins. It is one he must wage without his armour. Behind him, even now proffering gold, lurks a demon. Above the bed, expectant and interested, peers yet another demon. The outcome of the story is left undecided. We hope desperately that the miser will relinquish empty possessiveness and accept the truth of death. © 31 Dec 1995, Nicolas Pioch

Bosch, Hieronymus b c. d bur 9 Aug 1516). Netherlandish painter and draughtsman. The most distinctive and idiosyncratic of 15th-century Netherlandish artists, he produced a body of work remarkable for its depiction of fantastic, often diabolic, creatures, generally moralizing representations of the consequences of sin and folly.

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Bosch, Hieronymus Early Dutch painter. His fantastic visions, often filled with bizarre and cruel images, depict a sinful world in which people are tormented by demons and weird creatures, as in Hell , a panel from the triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights c. 150510 Prado, Madrid). In their richness, complexity, and sheer strangeness, his pictures foreshadow surrealism. Bosch is named after his birthplace, 's-Hertogenbosch, in North Brabant, the Netherlands. His work, which strongly influenced Brueghel the Elder, may have been inspired by a local religious brotherhood. However, he seems to have been an orthodox Catholic and a prosperous painter, not a heretic, as was once believed. His work was collected by Philip II of Spain, who shared Bosch's dark vision of the world.
