In these pictures the fascination lies more in the expression of the Mother and Child and in the look on the faces of the half-grown boy-angels than in the unaffected simplicity of the pose and composition. Two of these pictures, circular in form (called tondo , round) have become very famous. Both are in Florence; one is the "Magnificat". and in the other the Child is holding a pomegranate. A circular canvas at Berlin which depicts the Madonna enthroned and surrounded by angels carrying candles is characterized by deep religious feeling. A number of small pictures of the Madonna recall Fra Filippo; others more severe in tome seem to show the influence of Verrocchio. The Child's expression is always sweet and winning, yet thoughtful as well, and at times the look is one of intense earnestness. The Mother in holy awe restrains her tenderness and seems to have a presentiment of future sorrow. This feeling of melancholy foreboding is also expressed in the attendant angels and saints. A painting of this enthroned Madonna with the two Johns is at Berlin; two canvases at Florence depict the same Madonna surrounded by numerous saints. It is plain that the look of melancholy on the face of the Mother of God had a strange attraction for the painter. His portrait of himself in the "Destruction of Core, Dathan, and Abiron" shows his natural inclination to intense earnestness, and in the "Outcasts" he has depicted the profoundest depths of grief.

Botticelli was Florentine and extremely successful at the peak of his career, with a highly individual and graceful style founded on the rhythmic capabilities of outline. With the emergence of the High Renaissance style at the turn of the 16th century, he fell out of fashion, died in obscurity and was only returned to his position as one of the best-loved quattrocento painters through the interest of Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites. His nickname "Botticelli" means "little barrel" and was originally bestowed on his older brother. For some reason the name was passed on to, and adopted by, the younger painter brother. "Botticelli's early years are obscure, but he seems to have been trained in the studio of Filippo Lippi whose style informs his earliest dated work, the Fortitude panel (1470, Florence, Uffizi). This was commissioned to be one of a series of seven, the others having been executed by Piero Pollaiuolo. A stylistic affinity here also with Pollaiuolo is perhaps due to the patrons' requirements for unity within the series (certainly it is never evident again). He developed a highly personal style characterized by elegant execution, a sense of melancholy, and a strong emphasis on line; details appear as sumptuous still lifes. Botticelli was born in Florence, the son of a tanner. His nickname was derived from Botticello (“little barrel”), either the nickname of his elder brother or the name of the goldsmith to whom Sandro was first apprenticed. Later he served an apprenticeship with the painter Fra Filippo Lippi. He worked with the painter and engraver Antonio del Pollaiuolo, from whom he gained his sense of line; he was also influenced by Andrea del Verrocchio. Botticelli also painted religious subjects, especially panels of the Madonna, such as the Madonna of the Magnificat (1480s), Madonna of the Pomegranate (1480s), and Coronation of the Virgin (1490), all in the Uffizi, and Madonna and Child with Two Saints (1485, Staatliche Museen, Berlin). Other religious works include Saint Sebastian (1473-1474, Staatliche Museen) and a fresco, Saint Augustine (1480, Church of the Ognissanti, Florence). In 1481 Botticelli was one of several artists chosen to go to Rome to decorate the walls of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. There he executed The Youth of Moses, the Punishment of the Sons of Corah, and the Temptation of Christ.

SANDRO BOTTICELLI Son of a tanner, Alessandro Filipepi, known as Botticelli after the goldsmith with whom he began his apprenticeship, was born in Florence in 1445 and showed a talent for painting at a very early age. Luckily he came into a period of well-being, favoured by the Medicis, the noble family of Florence, who were rich and distinguished patrons and encouraged artists and writers. His first teacher in the art of panels was Filippo Lippi , who taught him to draw outlines, to create the effect of transparency, and to give his pictures a certain fluidity and harmony. The young Sandro was also influenced by the Pollaiolo brothers, and their emotive force, and by Verrocchio and his use of colour. His first paintings were of the Virgin and Child, which include the one at the Louvre. He later made a name for himself and in 1470 was given a public commission to paint "Fortitude" (here, in the Pollaiolo Room), which was to be hung in the Trade law court, along with the other theological and cardinal virtues, painted by Piero Pollaiolo "Allegory of Spring" was painted in 1477-78 for Lorenzo di Medici's Villa di Castello, and it shows the artist's close adhesion to the neo-Platonic style of Marsilio Ficino and Agnolo Poliziano. Primavera would appear to be the visual representation of the Ficinian concept: the three Graces are the Trinity, Flora the Virgin, and Mercury the character that draws together the Platonic and Christian elements. The painting, like a thaumaturgical amulet that captures beneficent astral energy and reflects it upon the beholder, could have been intended as an "amulet" for tempering the sanguine character of Lorenzino. In 1481 Sandro was summoned to the Fabbrica di San Pietro in Rome. In the Sistine Chapel he painted three large frescoes with a powerful, modern style and colour tones: (The Youth of Moses); La Punizione dei Figli di Corah (Punishment of the Sons of Corah) and La Tentazione di Cristo (The Temptation of Christ). Botticelli's painting gradually became bare and essential. He abandoned decorative motifs, details deriving from Flemish painting and sumptuous still lifes, and instead used vibrant colours and a mediaeval composition in which perspective is intentionally ignored or overturned. Botticelli hatte Kontakte zu einem Philosophenkreis sowie zu der Medici-Familie, was einen großen Einfluß auf seinen Werdegang hatte. Zu den berühmtesten Werken Botticellis zählen die Darstellung der "Primavera", die er im Jahre 1478 malte und die vier Jahre später entstandene "Geburt der Venus"; beide Gemälde fertigte er im Auftrag des Pier Francesco Medici an. Nach einer sehr ruhmvollen und schaffensreichen Zeit erlahmte die schöpferische Kraft Botticellis in seinen letzten zehn Lebensjahren; er verstarb im Jahre 1510 in Florenz. La linea flessuosa è una delle caratteristiche più evidenti dello stile botticelliano che diviene capolavoro nella Primavera (1478). Quest’opera famosissima, delle dimensioni di 203 x 314, nasce a Firenze nell’ambiente culturale di Lorenzo il Magnifico. L’artista ha espresso, nel soggetto mitologico, gli ideali estetici dell' Nel 1481 viene chiamato a Roma per realizzare tre grandi affreschi nella Cappella Sistina (Mosè e le figlie di Jetro, La punizione di Core e Le prove di Cristo) e alcune figure di Pontefici, lavoro compiuto entro l’estate del 1482. Nello stesso periodo realizza diverse opere, nelle quali raggiunge la piena maturità stilistica, come la Madonna del Magnificat. Negli anni che seguirono, Botticelli avrebbe dipinto altre composizioni allegoriche pagane per Lorenzo di PierFrancesco, cugino del Magnifico, come Pallade e il Centauro (1484 ca.) e la Nascita di Venere (1485). La prima era forse un’allegoria della politica equilibrata di Lorenzo il Magnifico (la ragione che domina l’istinto). La seconda, forse, una fecondazione dell’anima che genera la Bellezza (come il mare genera Afrodite).
