Fruitdish and Glass
Sorgues, early September 1912 (160 Kb); Charcoal and pasted paper, 62 x 44.5 cm (24 3/8 x 17 1/2 in); Private collection; M.-F./C. 1 In Fruitdish and Glass , Braque used wood grain wallpaper in a literal manner, to represent the texture and color of wood. Two strips of wallpaper placed in the upper part of the papier colle denote the wood paneling (or perhaps faux bois wallpaper?) on the wall of the cafe, while a third strip placed horizontally at the lower edge signifies the cafe table or, more specifically, the drawer of the table. Yet the pieces of paper that suggest the paneling of the back wall refuse to remain in the distance, since they are plainly visible as flat elements lying on top of the paper support and on the same forward plane as the drawer. For Braque, the wood grain paper undermines spatial relations, can be both figure and ground at once, and is conceived as a sign for material substance independently of its location in space. © 18 Sep 1995

GEORGE BRAQUE
STILL LIFE WITH FRUIT
Artist: BRAQUE, GEORGE (Argenteuil, 1881 - Paris, 1964) Date: C. 1960 Medium: ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPH PRINTED IN COLOUR Note: Georges Braque: One of Europe’s leading figures of avant-garde art, Georges Braque’s influence upon Fauvism, Post-Impressionism and (most particularly) Cubism is paramount. Braque came to Paris in 1900, briefly studying at the Academie Humbert and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He joined the revolutionary Fauvist movement in 1906 but a much more crucial development occurred in 1908 when together with Picasso he created Cubism. As both a painter and original printmaker, Braque is regarded as the most analytical of all Cubist artists. George Braque first began experimenting with etching and lithography in 1921. These mediums came to take a major position during the following years of his career, both in individually published prints and in original graphics for commissioned, illustrated books. Created around 1960, Still Life with Fruit is typical of Braque’s mastery in the lithographic medium.

George Braque
French painter Georges Braque studied art in Paris at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts and then at the Academie Humbert. With Pablo Picasso, he developed the cubist art movement in the early years of the twentieth century. After 1907 he and Picasso worked together, continually experimenting with this new art form. Their brilliant collaboration was brought to an end with the onslaught of war in 1914. Braque went to fight and did not resume painting until 1917. He continued to grow as an artist (best known for his still-life studies), gaining the stature of a major figure in twentieth-century art. In addition to his paintings, Braque made woodcuts, etchings, and lithographs; the etchings and woodcuts were earlier works, the lithographs were published in Paris after World War II.

GEORGES BRAQUE :
A CUBISM PIONEER Georges Braque (1882-1963) was born in Argenteuil, near Paris and brought up in Le Havre. where he was apprenticed to his father's painting trade house and studied at the local Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1900 he went to Paris where he befriended Raoul Dufy A year later, Friesz who had adhered to the Fauvist movement notably formed by Vlaminck, Derain and Matisse invited him to adopt his style. Braque accompanied Friesz during the latter’s second sojourn in Antwerp in 1906 and the works he produced there were quite similar to those of his friend. A year later he went to work again with Friesz in Southern France, notably at La Ciotat and L'Estaque. Braque, however did not stick with the subjective and impulsive aspects of Fauvism and worked according to his feelings far away from the principles enacted by Gauguin and Symbolist painters. After being deeply impressed by the Cezanne Memorial Exhibition at the Salon d'Automne in 1907, he began painting in a more logical manner of geometrical analysis, which anticipated what was to become Cubism. After giving up Fauvism in 1907 he met Picasso through the dealer Daniel-H. Kahnweiler. The Spanish painter had started to paint

Links and References E-Mail me Georges Braque "Violin and Pitcher" Georges Braque was born on May 13 in 1882. He grew up near Paris, and in 1902 he settled there to study painting. He really liked pictures by the fauves who painted with bright colors and unstructured forms. He painted in those styles until 1908. In 1908 Braque began to paint in the cubist style. Between 1908 and 1913 he began to study light and perspective. He used his studies to use shading of a cube to make it look both flat and three-dimensional at the same time. Houses at L'Estaque In 1909, Braque began to work with Pablo Picasso . They both began to use neutral colors and complex geometric patterns. This style of art is now called analytic cubism. Between 1910 and 1912, Braque began to use a collage. Collage is when an artist take things from everyday life like newspapers, fabric, rope, etc... and uses them is his art. The Fruit dish In 1914 he enlisted in the French army and was injured. After the war, Braque used more bright colors and textured surfaces. He also painted more still lifes. He died on August 31, 1963.

march 2003 the world according to art Analytical Cubism 1907-1911 : Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque by cavan wee Question : With detailed reference to specific artworks, examine the breakdown of conventional illusionistic space in painting during the 'analytic' phases of Cubism c.1907-1911. Contributing factors such as the 'Cézannism' of Picasso and Braque should be taken into account. Contemporary ideas of simultaneity and the 4 th Taking a quick imaginary tour of the rich palette of 20th Century art, it is difficult to find a phase of greater representational revolution than that of Cubism. It is not only what drove Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque to the Cubist way, but also the visually complex and strikingly interesting solution found that sparks admiration from even the confused layman. For it cannot be ignored that even today many have difficulty understanding these paintings, let alone their significance to values of representation in painting. We cannot approach the understanding of the Cubist revolution from the outside for it was not a revolution based on aesthetics. Rather we must investigate the representational problems, influences and contemporary ideas circumventing it to gain a true understanding of the nature of Cubism. Cubism influenced many artists including Jean Metzinger, Albert Gleizes, Fernand Leger and Marcel Duchamp during the periods 1908-1921 and continued to wield a presence in later times, most notably in the works of Piet Modrian, Robert Delaunay and even the Australian Godfrey Miller. Yet it was almost certainly just two painters, Picasso and Braque, who developed the solution to what we now describe as the cubist picture. Working together during the 'analytic' phase of 1907-1911 they tackled the fundamental problem of three-dimensional representation on two dimensions. This of course was not a new problem; it had been tackled and 'solved' as early as the Renaissance using illusion through technique. But

39. Analytical Cubism : Pablo Picasso And George Braque. An Article From Cavant-gard
It seems that Picasso and braque drew on Cézanne's initial breakdown of theconventional illusion and took it one step further in their analyses.

march 2003 the world according to art article continued... Figure 2 Pablo Picasso Three Women 1908 oil on canvas 210 x 220cm Picasso's Three Women Three Women Both Three Women and Harbour exhibited the Cubist techniques of multiple perspectives and non-coherent lighting in order to stress the three-dimensionality of objects. This three-dimensionality in turn was the analytical Cubist solution to the representation of the essential truth in objects. This solution can be read as an extension of the Impressionists' solution, considering that it was they who originated the notion of the 'true' form. It is possible in early Cubist Braques and Picassos to trace a certain lineage to Cézanne, in particular reference to the use of multiple perspectives and the likening of forms to their most basic elements. It seems that Picasso and Braque drew on Cézanne's initial breakdown of the conventional illusion and took it one step further in their analyses. By examining Cézanne's Mont Ste-Victoire 1904 (Figure 3) we can begin to expose these linkages.
